05 Oct 202041. Navigating Today’s Political Climate and Reflecting on the Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg with Jon Shahar00:59:12
“We live in a different time. Today vs. Yesterday. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is probably the number one lesson I learned in law school and probably the number one piece of advice I can give to anybody who’s trying to delve into this nuance and who’s trying to learn more things and to really push the bounds of your own belief systems, and probably, what’s going to make this country and the world a little bit better.” - Jon Shahar Jon Shahar (@jonshahar2040) is a third-year law student at Temple University and a passionate political activist. As our country enters one of the most polarized political seasons of our lifetimes, we wanted to bring someone with a deep understanding of politics and discuss the importance of this election. (Please VOTE!) In this week’s episode, Jon shares his journey into politics and law, as well as the strategies that allow him to navigate the complexities of today’s political system. The interview took place just 12 hours after the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, so Jon courageously reflects on her legacy and speculates around the future implications of her passing. He also explains many powerful and potentially transformational ideas, such as the empathetic use of knowledge, the interconnectedness of political issues, and most importantly, the necessity for nuance and admitting when you’re wrong. This episode is packed with insight and entertainment for anyone looking to learn about politics and to have a good laugh. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Jon Shahar.
16 May 2022#95. Success Leaves Clues, Being Comfortable with the Unknown, and Building a Music Career — Benjamin Carter02:16:28

How do musicians derive inspiration from their pain? Is doing what you love and loving what you really possible in America? How?

The guest of honor this week is Benjamin Carter. Ben is a Caribbean-American singer-songwriter, artist, father, and fellow student of life.

He currently has over 51,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone, not to mention his music spans across all platforms. Ben’s music is groovy, thought-provoking, and uniquely vulnerable. He seeks to take everyone’s walls down, including his own. As he puts it, “Caribbean raised me, but DMV made me.”

This excerpt from his website at carterbenjamin.com best describes his music style-

“Benjamin uses music to tell stories of heartache, love, addiction, gentrification, and racism. he does so in hopes of developing artists of the next generation to do the same. he is a musician and entrepreneur fueled by a relentless enthusiasm and passion, with sights set on advocating for mental, physical, and spiritual health, through the undeniable power of music.”

Now, just to name a few of his mile-long recognitions. He has performed at the legendary venue 9:30 Club in DC and released his 2018 single “Cosmic” produced by a well-known producer Andy Seltzer through a collaboration with Warner Music Group and Distribution.

Ben’s 2020 single “Fragile” and 2021 single “Psycho,” which is my personal favorite, have both been featured on New Music Friday and NPR Radio Play.

Oh, did I also mention he’s a BEAST in the gym? You can find all things Benjamin Carter on his social media handle: @carterbenjamin and his website at carterbenjamin.com Altruistic Support:

24 Jul 2023#135. The Illusion of Choice - Aja Rose | Sacred Rest Retreat01:18:19

What is the illusion of choice? What are the water fasting benefits? What is the spiritual life?

Aja Rose is a sacred rest facilitator, restorative breathwork expert, natural medicine practitioner, and gifted musician.

Aja’s mission statement is to create a space for others to unlock their “Sacred Rest” by being attuned to their innate beings through nature, locally sourced food, and music-driven ceremonies.

Expect to learn how to stop seeking endlessly, about the spiritual life, water fasting benefits, illusion of choice, finding hope after lost hope, and more.

22 Nov 2021#87. Discovering Forgiveness & Life’s Lessons through The Healing Power of Curiosity — Bob Choat, Ph.D.00:47:41

"It’s really important that you have a meeting with the Self, the Undiscovered Self, that’s always been there. Come into that and embrace that person and, how can you two work together to propel yourselves in unleashing that part of you while relinquishing that weaker part of you that no longer serves you? Bring that out and you'll see yourself how much happier, much more fulfilled, in whatever you do." - Bob Choat, Ph.D.

This week, we continue our conversation with Dr. Bob Choat.

Dr. Choat is one of the most impressive & widely-experienced people we’ve ever met.

A former Marine Veteran, Bob has worked extensively in physical fitness and martial arts— earning him a 5th-degree black belt in Kenpo and senior instructor status in Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, and Kali-Silat.

He also holds a Ph.D. in neuropsychology, as well as certifications in NLP, executive coaching, and Peak Performance Mindset.

In last week’s episode, Bob shares a bit of his background, as well as some of his biggest tips towards effective learning & decision-making, so we recommend starting there.

This week, we discuss one of our favorite topics - the healing power of curiosity.

Bob tells a powerful story of his father’s upbringing & passing. Despite a violent upbringing & strained relationship, Bob leaned into curiosity to uncover his father's past and, ultimately, forgave his father just two days before his passing.

You’ll also hear about Bob’s childhood— living in Okenowa learning martial arts, and eventually, the US.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Bob Choat.

This episode shows that if your "why" is big enough, anything is possible. 11 Jul 2022#103. How a Pastor Views Church Hurt, Do We Have Free Will, and Is God Really Dead? — James Lee01:44:43

Why does God allow suffering? Is there free will? Do you know the difference between faith and trust? Are soulmates real?

This week’s guest is James Lee. James is a Christian philosopher, a college pastor at Youngnak LA, and a lecturer at Biola University. James has a graduate degree in pastoral care and counseling and a doctorate of ministry in integrative theology and philosophy.

James Lee and Benoit discuss faith, philosophy, religion and culture, especially in modern America, where Christianity has not had the best reputation for its historical wrongdoing.

This is a special episode because Benoit always wanted to uphold his Christian faith more openly on the show, but fear of the mob attack from the inter-web has stopped him until now.

Expect to learn about why most people leave the church, the trauma of church hurt, how James views 'God Is Dead,' and other philosophical discussions.

16 Aug 2021#79. Our 40 Day Shadow Work Journey with “Claim Your Power” by Mastin Kipp00:35:32

“In my experience, I’ve always looked at the top level, being Behavior, as the first and foremost thing that we’re trying to change. And he (Mastin Kipp) argues that instead of focusing on behavior and trying to shift behavior, we should flip the script and then start with the Original Incident.” - Aidan Weinmann

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

In this week’s episode, we reflect on our experience completing Mastin Kipps’ book, “Claim Your Power”

“Claim Your Power” is a 40-day journey, that helps readers identify and dissolve hidden traumas and discover their life’s purpose.

The book is a unique blend of psychology and spirituality and combines captivating storytelling with insightful writing prompts.

We share some of the most impactful prompts from the book, as well as a few of our biggest takeaways.

One of our biggest ideas from the book is the “Anatomy of Transformation Ladder, a framework that explains that path to transformation.

When it comes to change, we all look at behaviors first… how to lose 10 pounds, wake up earlier, stick to a healthy diet, etc.

Kipp explains that for true change to occur, we must flip the model on its head and, instead of looking at behaviors first, we must look at our Original Incident, or trauma that informed the beliefs, emotions, stories, and behaviors in our life.

From bottom to top: Original Incident, Beliefs, Emotions, Stories, Behaviors.

We also share and reflect on our favorite quotes from the book.

This was one of the most impactful books that we’ve ever read, so we highly recommend picking up a copy if you feel called.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More with us.

"It's about really understanding what the issue is, and then from there figuring out the best way to try to attack that. I am somewhat successful at my job because I have this black piece of paper mentality. It's about finding a prescription that's not anywhere, but to talk to people and to dig deep to figure out what's happening. - Jorge Requena Jorge Requena is a Bolivian tech consultant who has a wide perspective about the world we live in. In this episode, Jorge shares about his upbringing and education in the Dominican Republic and Bolivia. His international experiences lead to a conversation around the importance of travel and exposure, as well as the education systems in America and abroad. We’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us, and Jorge Requena

21 Jun 2021#71. How to Create Balance in a World of Expectation?00:16:55

“By using the word 'find' we are tricking ourselves because there’s not a magic button… balance isn’t hidden somewhere in this room for us to discover. It’s not an Easter egg hunt. But rather, it’s a cultivated practice. Just like anything else in the world. Similarly, I think that’s the same ethos we want to convey about the difference between finding balance and creating balance. You must create it through continuous practice. Because if you can’t find balance in the little things in life, how can you possibly find balance when it really matters.” - Benoit Kim

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we’re kicking off a new series that we’re excited to share with you.

These mini-episodes will discuss one of the main topics that we discussed in last week’s interview.

One of the big ideas that came up in our last interview with Sashia Liriano was Balance.

In the episode, we discussed the balance of flavors within food, also known as “Umami”.

So, we wanted to take it a step further to unpack what balance means to us and how we strive towards it in everyday life.

We hope you enjoy this week's episode of Discover More with us.

"A lot of us gravitate really easily to that label. And it's interesting to observe you're describing who you are as a way that you show up for someone else. How do you show up for yourself? 11 Oct 2021#84. The Forever Athlete Mindset and How to Achieve Peak Performance & Flow State through Biofeedback — Cory Camp00:52:50

"One of the things that coach of mine actually helped me work through was creating a 'To Be List. So setting intentions first for the day, and then with those intentions, they run your to-do list. So what I mean by that is instead of on my to-do list today, being I need to record a podcast with you guys, I need to do whatever, it becomes: all right how do I want to be today? That's the first question that I'm asking when I wake up. So getting clear on those intentions I think goes a long way." - Cory Camp

This week's guest is Cory Camp.

Corey is a personal performance coach, podcast host, and the founder of the Forever Athlete brand and community.

As a former swimmer and record holder at the University of Delaware, Cory recognizes the hidden mental health challenges in athletics, and has committed himself to bring awareness to these issues and helping former athletes lead healthier lives.

He hosts the Athletic Mindset podcast, which is dedicated to taking a deeper look into the mental approach of elite athletes.

And his brand, Forever Athlete brings together athletes of all backgrounds to build community and grow together.

In this episode, Cory shares some powerful stories from his collegiate swimming career, as well as his expansive mission behind the Forever Athlete Brand.

He also explains some of the strategies he uses with coaching clients including, monitoring biofeedback, balancing internal & external motivators, and finding your flow.

Cory is an incredible human & coach, and we had so much fun talking with him.

27 Jan 202022. Discover More Books. Stillness is the Key.00:30:28
If you haven’t heard yet, stillness is the key to just about everything. Ryan Holiday’s best selling book, Stillness is the Key, is one of the most impactful books we’ve ever read and this episode is our effort to share our biggest takeaways and lessons learned. As Holiday explains, stillness is that moment where thoughts settle around you. It’s that ability to get quiet, step back, and truly reflect. It’s the thing that allows you to think clearly, make tough decisions, and handle high-pressure situations. It’s one of the most powerful forces in the world. Holiday masterfully draws on examples from a range of subjects and distills wisdom down into relatable, actionable four to six-page chapters. We cannot recommend this book more, and we hope you pick up a copy and/or discover more about it on this weeks’ episode.

22 Mar 202161. Engaged Buddhism Practices and Pursuit of Passion through Self-Advocacy — Jess Cadorette01:12:10

“Yeah, challenges suck, and life will come at you hard, and fast…. But if you are able to, in at least some corner of your mind, remember that actually, this hard time will help you grow. If you take on challenges as growth opportunities, that is one of the key pieces that I’ve seen in resilient people. If you can change your mindset to understanding that, I think your life will change within months. Almost within weeks… if you start looking at challenges as an opportunity, either to find a solution or to grow.” - Jess Cadorette

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we continue our conversation with Jess Cadorette.

Jess (@jesscadorette) is an environmental advocate who currently serves as the Field Director for the Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, the statewide political voice for the environment.

Last week, we discussed the environmental issues that we face as a society, as well as the ways that we can begin to make a difference through advocacy and sustainability.

She also shared about her personal journey into environmentalism, so we recommend starting there as an introduction for this episode.

This week, Jess courageously reflects on her experience with Crohn’s Disease and shares the many important lessons it taught her about life and health.

We discuss the importance of caring for not only our physical and mental health but also our spiritual health.

This leads to a conversation around “engaged Buddhism”, mindfulness, self-advocacy, and making the most of every moment.

To close the episode, in honor of Woman’s History Month, Jess delivers some powerful advice for women in their early 20’s looking to make a difference in this world.

14 Jun 2021#70. America’s Gentrified Food Culture, the Beauty of Dominican Cuisine, and the Chef’s Journey — Sashia Gabrieli Liriano01:00:29

“But I think an important thing is making things inclusive. Before anything goes out to a customer, every single person in the kitchen and all of the servers try everything. We take input from everybody. Understanding that everyone knows what good food tastes like. Having an inclusive kitchen where everybody’s able to put their input in. I think that’s what builds a great menu.” - Sashia Liriano

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we continue our conversation with Sashia Liriano.

Sashia is a Dominican American chef who is the Chef de Cuisine at Friday, Saturday, Sunday, the #2 restaurant in the city according to Philly Magazine.

In part 1 of the interview, Sashia shares about her personal journey into the culinary world, so we recommend starting there for context around this week’s conversation.

In this episode, we bounce around to a wide range of food topics, ranging from recipes to recommendations to food insecurity.

Sashia explains what she looks for in a good restaurant and recommends some of her favorite places to eat and shop for groceries in Philadelphia.

She also shares about her experience growing up in the Bronx and how that informs her life today, both in and outside of the kitchen.

We also dive into an uncomfortable but important conversation around food insecurity. Not only is food inaccessibility damaging the health of disadvantaged populations, but it’s also disrupting the food systems and cultural traditions of many communities.

We both took so much away from this conversation and we encourage everyone to reflect on the topics discussed, especially around food inequality and our role in it.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Sashia Liriano.

20 Mar 2023#126. How Do We Organize Knowledge? - Sarah Abou Hadir01:18:32

Is philosophy useful? Can you read too much? How are science and spirituality related?

This week’s guest is Sarah Abou Hadir. Sarah is a professional editor, writer, book virtuoso, and TikTok influencer. She is a ferocious reader, as she has read about 20 books a month during the pandemic, not to mention her impressive memory recall and retention. Currently, Sarah is in the process of self-publishing the book that she wants to read the most.

Sarah studied physics, political science, and public administration at the American University of Beirut, and Journalism, Media & Communication in Madrid, Spain.

From philosophy, quantum physics, and mental health, to modern wisdom, it appears that Sarah dabbles in all these esoteric yet practical domains.

A little fun fact: Sarah and Benoit crossed paths during the pandemic on Clubhouse, an app that has died very hard since, but shoutout to Clubhouse nonetheless. In hindsight, CH should have accepted the $4 billion offer by Twitter back in 2021…

Expect to learn about why reading too much is harmful, the practical application of philosophy, why TikTok can be profound, timeless thought experiments to improve your life, how to fight death, and much more.

Let's get this started.

“And it was like this whole universe that was just hidden from me. Because I had never thought to explore it. And I think that idea haunts me all the time because I haven’t stopped, for a moment, from making the decisions or the assumptions that I’ve lived my life with. And if I challenge my own assumptions it can change everything. And it excites me. I love to go through my day thinking, 'Oh I wonder what I can find today.'” - Sheetal Bahirat How to Create a Health Drink from Recycled Avocado Seeds? 02 Mar 202027. Level Up Modern Dating with the 5 C’s00:45:27
In this week's episode, we synthesize our collective experiences in modern dating. We both have recognized the importance and profound impact that our relationships have served in our lives. We have compiled all the experiences into the 5 Cs, in respective order, to help simplify the complexity of modern dating- Chemistry, Compatibility, Comfortability, Commitment, and Communication. Chemistry is the initial spark between the two people or known as the first impression. Compatibility is the shared connection of beliefs, habits, and personalities between the two people. Comfortability is the ability to display one's authenticity and vulnerability. Commitment is the decision to choose each other through both highs and lows by becoming the best partner you can be. Communication is the bridge that connects all the C's and the force that could make or break a relationship. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More and thank you for listening.
09 Mar 202028. Babies on Netflix and Care through Music and Medicine with Allison Hare00:59:16
Allison Hare is a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, who has an immense passion for caring for and connecting with others. In this week’s episode, she tells the story of the identity crisis that occurred in high school, when she was told she wasn’t good enough to be a professional cellist. This crisis brought her to a pre-med track at the University of Wisconsin, where she majored in psychology, and worked in a research lab that was just featured in the Netflix documentary, “Babies.” 🏼 🏼 The lab studies the way infants acquire language through statistical learning, and her personal research shows the impact that music exposure can have on babies’ ability to acquire language. She shares the gratitude that she now has for this identity crisis, as it led her to medicine, a field that also allows her to connect and provide care, but on a larger scale than music. We also dive into the power of reflection, the necessity of creative outlets, and the importance of framing your self-talk around behavior rather than identity. This one touches on so many different topics and is quite insightful into the world that is medical school, so we really think you’ll enjoy it. “In that moment, I kind of realize that I don’t have to give up on the part of the music that allowed me to connect with other people when I go into medicine. I can still touch people in a way that’s deep, profound, meaningful, and real even if it is not through the cello. Just being a lending ear to someone that’s going through a difficult time or experience, or providing emotional support…Just showing someone that I care can have that same impact.” We’d really appreciate if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Allison Hare. Thank you.

20 Jul 202034. Discover More Books: Top 10 Lessons from The Third Door by Alex Banayan00:38:10
“The Third Door” by Alex Banayan is one of the most entertaining and compelling books we have ever read. Filled with adventurous stories and profound pieces of wisdom, The Third Door illustrates the true power of passion, persistence, and having a mission greater than ourselves. In The Third Door, Alex tells the story of how, at 18-years old, he decided to let go of his pre-med track at USC, and instead, follow his heart towards his mission; to interview the world’s most extraordinary thinkers and discover their secrets to success. The Third Door takes readers on an incredible journey - from hacking the Price Is Right for start-up money, to chasing Larry King through a grocery story, to booking interviews with some of the world’s most impactful thinkers. Interviews with Bill Gates, Maya Angelou, and Steve Wozniak, as well as a collection of others revealed one thing they all have in common; they all took the Third Door. Now, “What is The Third Door?, you may ask. As Alex explains, Life, business, success… it’s just like a nightclub. There are always three ways in. There’s the First Door: the main entrance, where 99 percent of people wait in line, hoping to get in. The Second Door: the VIP entrance, where the billionaires and celebrities slip through. But what no one tells you is that there is always, always… the Third Door. It’s the entrance where you have to jump out of line, run down the alley, bang on the door a hundred times, crack open the window, sneak through the kitchen—there’s always a way.”

"For those of you listening, my TedX talk, the theme of it is this concept that created called the courage equation. The courage equation is courage = belief > fear. So I believe that in order to have courage, all we need is to raise our self-belief to a level that is greater than our fear. Once we do that, we will act. We will have the courage to take action. We will have the courage to put ourselves out there. To be vulnerable. To create the life that we want." - Jaclyn DiGregorio

This week, we continue our conversation with Jaclyn DiGregorio.

Jaclyn (@jaclyndigregorio) is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, podcast host, and life coach.

In part one of the interview, she shared about her personal journey and the mindset tools she uses with her clients.

This was released last week as episode 58, and we recommend you start there before listening to part two of the interview this week.

In this week’s episode, we discuss concepts around identity, such as how our identities are created and how they are transformed.

She also shares about the power of affirmations, the importance of an empowering money mindset, and the equation she crated for courage.

In 2020, she gave a TEDx talk about her courage equation, and we highly recommend checking it out.

And that was the first thing that showed me that there is a type of communication that you can experience with other people that is beyond words. That's a feeling. And it's in that resonance that there's this beautiful magic that happened because you're not trying to relate through the mind and the intellect but you're resonating on a certain feeling.” - Yoshua Greenfield

This week, we continue our conversation with Yoshua Greenfield.

Yoshua is a talented musician, author, home cook, nature-lover, and bare-foot advocate.

This week’s episode is part two of our interview, and we examine Yoshua’s philosophy around relationships. Whether living in a relationship with nature, self, or other humans, it’s important to look through the lens of resonance— that is, the felt sense of energetic connection; what feels right.

We go on to discuss music and Yoshua’s journey as a musician. His released album, You and The Everybody Band, aims to facilitate connection through shared musical experiences & improvisation.

He also teaches clients to sing through a unique vocal opening process. He shares several powerful stories which beautifully illustrate this voice-activation process, as well as the healing power of music and the importance of staying open to what life has to offer.

Stay tuned until the end to hear an incredible piece of music performed by Yoshua.

This week, we’ll be reviewing Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher @emilystellafletcher on Instagram. This book is a how-to meditation book for achievement minded individuals who believe they either don’t have the time to mediate or the ability to meditate consistently. Emily tells the story of how the stresses of a 10 year career on Broadway, led her to India to study the only thing that got her through those crazy years, meditation. She shares the wisdom she learned while studying Eastern meditation in India for 3 years. She then explains the Z-Technique, the meditation practice that she developed for the ordinary person and used to start her meditation company, Ziva. This book is packed with science-based studies around the neurological benefits of meditation that explains the transformative power of meditation. The compelling research and immutable results of meditation, paired with Emily’s remarkable story-telling, makes for an incredible page-turner that can make a profound impact on reader’s lives. In the first few chapters, Emily poses a powerful question, “Would you be willing to invest 2 precent of your day if you knew it would improve the other 98 percent?” We believe this is a no brainer. She explains, “Meditation is simply a tool to help you reach your goals; it’s never the goal itself. We Meditate to get good at life, not to get good at meditation.” Both Beniot and I have been meditating every morning for the past year, however this book transformed the way we look at and approach our practices. In this episode, we will discuss our biggest takeaways from Emily’s book, the many scientific benefits that she presents, as well as our significant experiences with and from meditation. We hope this episode brings you an effective toolkit that allows you to find a sense of calmness and composure amidst this challenging time.

"I think it helps me to be a better communicator because if I am with people and they say something out of the left-field, then really quickly I can in my brain think out how did it happen and then get there with them really fast. I think that's a really weird  accidental empathy tool that I built as a kid to learn to be a better communicator due to my suicidal ideation." - Paris Gramann

15 Nov 2021#86. How to Learn Effectively, Live a Life of Curiosity, and Pivot with Purpose — Bob Choat, Ph.D.01:08:59

"Each one of us, come into this world like that golden Buddha. You, me, we all have that golden self. The problem is that our society, our caregivers, wants to protect us. And then we protect ourselves in the same way, like the clay on the golden Buddha. And then we lose our innate curiosity. So transformation begins by uncovering that kind of stuff.” - Bob Choat, Ph.D.

This week’s guest is Dr. Bob Choat.

As a former recon special force marine, Bob recognized the importance of psychology and physiology early on and leaned into his innate curiosity to pursue 2 post-doctorates - one in clinical psychology and one in neuropsychology.

He is also the author of “Mind Your Own Fitness”, and the forthcoming books, “Unleash the Champion Within” and “Self-Mastery for the Home-Based Entrepreneur”.

Bob is also a grandmaster in martial arts, the highest honor given to senior instructors, with 5 black belts and several 5th degrees, including Kenpo and Jeet Kune Do. Not to mention, he’s also involved extensively in parktour, also known as free-running, and hypnosis.

After selling his company, Bob leaned into his curiosity again and decided to dive into the executive coaching space through NLP, also known as Neurolinguistic Programing, and became a Master NLP Trainer after dedicating over 40 years to the coaching industry.

As someone who recently turned 70 years old, Bob’s exceptional level of curiosity and his ever-expanding knowledge, and almost fairy-tale-like lived experiences are so inspiring, and something we would love to continue to embody on our show.

We hope you enjoy this week's Discover More with us and Dr. Bob Choat.

26 Jul 2021#76. The Reflective Episode—Finding Worthiness, Balancing Idleness & Productivity, Enneagrams, Integration, and More00:57:28

"Because I think we live in the societal and social narratives that everyone's always saying, "I'm busy", "I'm always busy", "I'm working on this", "I'm working on that", but if you're always busy, when do we have time for ourselves? Our amazing guest, @weswoodson, once said: "how can you love yourself if you don't spend time with yourself?" I realized, "this is the first opportunity I've had to commit a month to nothing else, no one else, but to me. Just working on myself. - Benoit Kim

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

In this week's episode, hosts Aidan & Benoit sit down to reflect on Benoit’s first two months living in Los Angeles.

After leaving his job last May to pursue graduate school, Benoit felt like he had lost his purpose and was battling feelings of unworthiness.

Unworthiness is one of the most common and crippling issues that we’ve seen and experienced within the world, and it becomes a key topic of this week’s conversation.

We believe that you don’t need to be productive to be worthy. Just being human is enough.

Similarly, we believe that productivity is placed on a pedestal in America and idleness carries a negative stigma.

In this week’s episode, we dispel some of these ideas and explore the topics of achievement, worthiness, and recovery within our own lives.

Benoit shares about the personal struggles that he has recently faced, as well as the practices that have helped him heal in the past few months.

We also discuss a variety of topics including Enneagrams, motivation, and integration.

We hope you find this episode helpful, wherever you may be, and we thank you for listening.

"It just makes common sense at least in terms of the health aspect. And it really only clicked for me 5 months ago, because like I said, I stopped eating dairy and  gluten. The brain fog cleared up immediately. Within 12 days, all the lingering depression I had was gone. I was like a whole new person again. Within 30 days, I felt happy and I could have listed at least 10 differences in my life that were significantly better in terms of my health. Some people are going to react differently than other people, but food is medicine." - Ross Raddi

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we continue our conversation with Ross Raddi.

Ross (@rossraddi)is a talented arborist, podcast host, accountant, and YouTuber.

By applying functional medicine principles and eliminating gluten and dairy from his diet, Ross shares that he was able to move past the depression that plagued him for years growing up.

He also shares his most powerful tips for building a successful side business.

This occurs at the end of the episode, so be sure to stick around for these insights.

"That's why the ability to reframe your perspective matters so much. I think reality = perception + perspective because your perception is shaped by your experiences, but your perspective is what you take away from your perception  and how you apply that. People always say 'information is power', or 'knowledge is power', but I think 'appliance is power'. When you have too much information, too much going on, you're going to get distracted and that's when paralysis by analysis, or decision-making fatigue, happens. So it's all about what you can apply from that experience." - Benoit Kim

"For example, there are people asking me to hit up Jay for Post Malone's concert for $400K, but Jay said: 'No, either a little under $1M or more." Now, I know that's the decision for him,  it's not for me, because until I get to that level, all I can do is to work with my peers and do whatever I can to shoot certain shots. If it works, it works. If not, then I pivot. That's it because nothing is promised in this music game." - Anweezy

06 Dec 2021#88. Awakening through Detachment, Transcending Self-Doubt, and Living Barefoot Culture — Yoshua Greenfield01:19:08

"So I'm very symbolic in nature and I'm aware that I'm creating these ideas and these stories to navigate life in a way. But the more I tune in and listen, the more things become obvious. For me, I don't make choices anymore. Choices are illusions. Like we think we were choosing between two things, but once the thing that we're supposed to do becomes clear, the other thing wasn't even really an option. But if you're turning into what you really want and what you really need, well then there is no choice. The other thing is just like the illusion hiding." - Yoshua Greenfield

This week’s guest, Yoshua Greenfield, is one of the most fascinating people we’ve ever met.

A talented musician, author, home cook, nature-lover, and bare-foot advocate, Yoshua comes with a wide range of important stories and lessons.

He is well-known in the YouTube community for his prior role in the food show, “Brothers Green”, as well as his current project, “You Enjoy Life”, which examines what it truly means to be and feel alive through food, music, natural movement, and connection.

In this week’s episode, Yoshua recounts his journey of transitioning from a Brooklyn-based professional musician to a Colorado-living barefoot advocate. He reflects on his experience running his first barefoot marathon in the Colorado Mountains, as well as the many physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of living barefoot.

Yoshua also shares some powerful practices for overcoming self-doubt, developing self-awareness, and deepening in relationship with Mother Nature.

05 Jul 2021#73. The Impact of Sociolinguistics, Education as an Art, and Critical Race Theory — Jack Knipe, Ph.D.01:20:22

“In brief, dialogism says when you go to a text, and read a novel and they present different characters, every character should be viewed as having their own storyline. So dialogism plays out in the classroom in the same way. Recognizing theoretically that every student that I have has their own story. They all have their own narrative. Like you said, we can’t dismiss them. It’s very dehumanizing to pretend that all of these students can learn in the same way and they all have the same capacity and they all have the same background.” - Jack Knipe

11 Jan 202151. Reimagining the Mental Health Landscape through Innovative Entrepreneurship — Paris Gramann01:17:40

“My goal of 'Just Be Books' - and Rebecca would probably agree - is to open up the conversation about mental health to add gray area. So that things can get healed and talked about. So that kids like me who are dealing with a lot of things like depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, who didn’t need really strict consequences, just are able to talk about it." - Paris Gramann

This week’s guest is Paris Gramann (@parisgramann), who is quite the multi-potentialite.

A multi-potentialite is a person who has a wide-range of interests and creative pursuits, and Paris certainly fits the description.

She is the co-founder of Just Be Books, a book company created to teach mental health concepts to children, as well as the founder of Empower Creative Agency, which conducts project management for creative endeavors.

She is also a passionate entrepreneurship teacher and mental health advocate.

Both education and mental health are huge topics of this conversation. Specifically, mental health education.

Paris shares about her personal mental health struggles, and how that journey inspired her work with Just Be Books, which aims to create dialogues and awareness around mental health concepts.

We also discuss topics such as philosophy within entrepreneurship, using guilt as a motivator, and modernizing Stoicism to the present day.

Please note that we discuss some sensitive subjects in this episode, including suicidal ideations, so feel free to skip through accordingly.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Paris Gramann.

"There's so much interesting space to talk about who can tell a story, and who has the right to tell a story, and how we tell stories about ourselves and each other. I think that it's something to be handled with such intentionality and sensitivity." - Julie Knutson

This week’s guest is Julie Knutson.

Julie is an author and educator with a wide-ranging background in history, humanities, and the social sciences. She also serves as editorial director at ThinkCERCA.

A true multipotentialite, Julie holds an undergraduate degree in cultural studies from NYU, a master’s degree in Political Sociology from The London School of Economics, and additional post-grad degrees in education and art history from Rice University.

One of her recent books, “Global Citizenship: Engage in the Politics of a Changing World,” was awarded a Skipping Stones Honor for Multicultural books, and helps young readers examine what it means to be a global citizen.

19 Jul 2021#75. How to Use Language to be More Intentional in Daily Life00:22:11

“The words and the language are the main toolkits that we have. It is the main paintbrush that we have to describe not just external realities, to describe not just what we see, what we experience, our traumas, our stories, our experiences. But most importantly, it is, in a way, the only tool that we have to describe our internal realities onto the others.” - Benoit Kim

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we unpack one of the big topics from our interview with Professor Jack Knipe, Ph.D.—the power of language.

Jack explained the power of language through the lens of cognitive linguistics, which is the study of the relationships between language, the mind, and how we relate to the world.

Language is one of the most powerful tools we have in life.

As author Don Miguel Ruiz says, “The word is a force; it is the power you have to express and communicate, to think, and thereby to create the events in your life.”

We explore these relationships as well as some of the language reframes that we’ve used to create empowering narratives within our own lives.

This episode will help you explore the question, “how intentional are you being with the words that you’re bringing to life?”

Thank you for Discovering More with us this week.

17 May 202167. How to Find Courage Amidst Change through the Power of Solitude and Storytelling — Wes Woodson01:20:06

"A good story is one that is vulnerable and authentic. And not just crafted up. So let’s go back to the TED Talk. Yeah, I did come out there and I said I have social anxiety...I admitted my biggest fear. Storytelling is so powerful because it gives you the ability to knock down that wall and establish connections. So I personally think a good story is one that provokes emotion and that is extremely vulnerable and authentic." - Wes Woodson

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week’s guest is Wes Woodson.

Wes is the founder and chief-story teller of thehidden, a clothing brand that inspires young people to be their true selves.

He started a non-profit at 16, delivered a TED talk at 21, and is about to release his first book, titled, “I Have Anxiety (So What?)”

After suffering a panic attack that landed him in a mental health clinic, Wes thought, “Why do I have to go to the lowest point in my life to get this level of knowledge?”

This started his mission to share stories and toolkits that he learned in anxiety school to help others own their anxiety.

In this week’s conversation, he shares many of the book’s insights, but we highly recommend you to pick up a copy when it’s released this Thursday, May 20, 2021.

In addition to mental health and healing, storytelling is a huge topic of conversation.

Wes explains what makes a good story, and how stories are fundamental to human connection.

He’s is one of the most genuine and talented storytellers and humans we’ve ever met, and we’re so excited to share this episode with you.

We hope you enjoy this week's episode of Discover More, with us and Wes Woodson.

05 Apr 202163. Austin Chiang, MD MPH (Part 1) — Popularity vs. Credibility, Physician Expertise on Social Media & Health Literacy, and COVID-19 Vaccine Experienc...01:14:03

“Over time I think we’ve seen a shift of putting ourselves more into our social media presence rather than just simply being a professional on social media spewing facts. I think my motivation is because there’s so much distrust in our healthcare system and health professionals, we’ve seen that play out with the pandemic, and I think it’s important to show that we are human beings too. We have personalities, struggles, interests, and the same questions that everyone else has. We might have a different perspective because we have more context and we are able to interpret the signs more readily. That’s why it is important to put the two together, so that way people could relate and we can empathize with one another.” - Austin Chiang, MD MPH

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week’s guest is Dr. Austin Chiang (@austinchiangmd), an esteemed physician in interventional and weight loss endoscopy. Austin is one of the few doctors in the world that’s triple-board certified in internal medicine, GI, and obesity medicine.

He received his bachelor’s degree at Duke University and went on to complete his medical and MPH trainings at Columbia University and Harvard Medical School. You can find his press coverages on outlets such as New York Times, Men’s Health, BBC news, and more.

Austin uses the power of social media and comedy to not only educate the public with an evidence-based approach, but also in attempt to break down the multitude barriers of misinformation. To further impact his social media presence, he founded the Association for Healthcare Social Media, the first non-profit society for health professional social media use.

Currently, Dr. Chiang is the Assistant Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, and serves as the Director of the Endoscopic Weight Loss Program and Chief Medical Social Media Officer for the Jefferson health system.

In this episode, Austin shares his mission of using social media to dispel misinformation and educate the public on the complexities of the healthcare system.

Unlike many doctors, Austin didn’t always know that he wanted to study medicine. He always kept an open mind, studying a wide variety of subjects in college and now, evaluating opportunities in seemingly unrelated fields.

He credits this open-mindedness for much of his success and that is a big topic of this week’s conversation.

We also discuss the importance of sharing one’s voice on social media, the necessity of acknowledging nuance, and his initial perspectives around the COVID vaccination.

We hope you enjoy this week’s episode of Discover More, with us and Dr. Austin Chiang.

27 Sep 2021#83. Canada’s Mosaic Culture, How to Navigate Productivity vs. Creativity, and the Art of Radical Alignment — Casey Palmer00:57:49

"Because if you're not creating and doing things from a place of core central beliefs, it won't have an impact on you. If you do something today and you've completely forgotten it by tomorrow, was there a point of doing it, is kind of how I see things. I want everything I do to place its mark on my soul because it was important." - Casey Palmer

This week, we continue with part two of our conversation with Casey Palmer.

Casey is a blogger, father, project manager, podcaster, and owner of the brand Casey Palmer, Canadian Dad.

The brand aims to empower fathers around the world through storytelling and sharing his unique journey in fatherhood.

His blog has risen to become one of the most influential places to find fatherhood content in the Great White North.

In this week’s episode, Casey shares many engaging stories and some of his favorite “Dadisms,” such as “Life is the sum of your experiences, so make sure your experiences count.”

Casey was born & raised in Canada and currently resides in Toronto— one of the most diverse cities in the world. He describes Canadian culture as “Mosaic”, which leads to a unique conversation around learning through different perspectives.

He also explains his process for balancing creativity & productivity, as well as the importance of traveling and living in alignment with your values.

03 Feb 202023. The 5 Biggest Lessons Learned as a 25 Year Old with Aidan Weinmann00:31:32
On today’s episode of Discover More, we share Aidan’s biggest lessons learned as a 25 year old. Every day for the last two years, Aidan has written down three lessons and three wins from each day. This episode is our effort to distill down the 1000+ lessons learned into the 5 that we feel can create the most impact in your life. We are immensely grateful for this year’s wins, losses and lessons, and we cannot wait to share them with you. 1️⃣ All stress is self-created. You get to choose how to respond in each moment. 2️⃣ Extreme accountability and ownership means that you are the source of every result in your life, good or bad. 3️⃣ Seek the Lesson. Life always gives the cast of characters & circumstances you need to grow. 4️⃣ Know thyself - then perform action without attachment (to the result). 5️⃣ Sooner or later, health will be your #1 concern. These lessons emerged from a range of teachers and in a variety of forms, including podcasts, books, captions, and most importantly, life experience. We would like to sincerely thank all of the teachers that have shared their wisdom and continue to create positive change every day. @nick_boleto @aubreymarcus @lewishowes @emilystellafletcher @mindpumpmedia @jockowillink @paul.chek @jayshetty @tombilyeu @erickgodsey @petercroneofficial Let us know what lesson resonated with you the most!
21 Sep 202039. Discover More Books: The Impossible First by Colin O’Brady00:31:29
"The idea of impossibility and possibility is entirely self-determined. And, it is our personal responsibilities to identify the potential sticking points and reframe them as growth points. We have to commit the effort, the time, and the energy to venture into the unknown. That is the most effective way to conquer your own impossible first." Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.  This week, we have another episode of Discover More Books, where we’ll be reviewing and discussing the book, “The Impossible First” by Colin O'Brady. The Impossible First tells the story of how Colin O’Brady became the first person to cross the landmass of Antarctica, completely unassisted and unsupported. The expedition spanned 54 days, with absolutely zero companionship or supply drop offs. This required pulling a 375 pound sled for 932 miles through temperatures as low as -112 degrees Fahrenheit. While the journey itself is powerful & inspiring, we believe the true value of this book lies in the lessons, mindsets, and approaches to life that Colin shares throughout his journey. When he was visiting Thailand at age 22, he severely burned his legs during a flaming jump rope accident. He was told he would never walk again, shattering his identity as a high-level endurance athlete. However, instead of focusing on the negative, his optimistic mother challenged him to set a goal and take the first step during recovery. Colin set a goal of running a triathlon, a seemingly impossible goal for someone in his position. Through his patience, visualization, and hard work, Colin went on to not just complete, but win the Chicago triathlon, just two years later. This story illustrates the very ethos of the Impossible First, that anything is possible if we remove the limits we put on ourselves. He believes that we are the stories we tell ourselves, and by re-writing these narratives, everyone has the power to change what is possible. We highly recommend reading this book, not just for the entertaining story, but also for the profound and inspiring lessons that O’Brady shares. We’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More Books. Thank you.

23 May 2022#96. Technology, Neural Network & the Need for Systems Thinking in Modern America, and More — Alan Booker02:42:51

What are systems thinking? Why is the analogy of "nature is a machine" so wrong? what are neural networks?

The guest of honor this week is Alan Booker. Alan is the founder of the Institute of Integrated Regenerative Design, a cloud computing expert, herbal medicine, and integrated health practitioner.

Alan has deep knowledge of dynamic systems thinking, technology, neural network, and nature. He also has a holistic approach to making America sustainable again. He is the creator of the Integrated Regenerative Design framework and the Biocompatible Design standards.

We dive deep into critical thinking, the addiction science of technology, why we were all indigenous groups, the power of neural networks, and more.

With hundreds of nights spent in the field, Alan also teaches wilderness survival, tracking, bird language, primitive fire making, and wildcrafting. As a result of studying herbal medicine for nearly 20 years, Alan also emphasizes how the proper use of real food and nourishing herbs can help build a foundation for lasting health.

In short, I need Alan as my partner on any camping trip or wildness-related activities moving forward.

Some of his notable life experiences include 40 years of practicing and instructing various martial arts, being a trained classical pianist and composer, and also leading many other national cross-organizational training.

Alan Booker currently resides in Alabama, dedicating his life to reimagining the regenerative health and permaculture landscape in modern America.

30 Nov 202047. Radical Acceptance, Army Deployment, and Suicide Prevention — SFC Monica Anderson01:19:57

"You need to learn your identity. Really look in and find out if that’s an identity that you like. Even if you don’t like it, you have to accept it to start. And you have to learn your values. You do not realize those things until they’re tested. So it really is a lot of trial and error. It took me up until this point to be comfortable in my own skin, to understand the things that matter, the things that are worth fighting for.” - Monica Anderson

Our guest this week, Monica Anderson, is a Commanding Sergeant First Class in the US Army, who comes with a wealth of experiential knowledge and wisdom.

She courageously shares the story that placed her in the army - a family disownment due to her sexual identity - as well as her experiences deployed in Iraq.

Mental health is a huge theme of this episode, and she reveals how she navigated the challenges of deployment and supported her struggling friends & battle buddies.

We also dive into her experience as an athletic trainer, and how that has complimented her life as a mother and a commanding officer.

If you or someone you know has been struggling with mental health recently, give this one a listen and share it with a friend.

We get vulnerable and go deep in conversations with SFC Anderson.

We’d really appreciate it if you could leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, as it really helps the podcast grow.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us, and SFC Monica Anderson.

14 Feb 2022#92. The Unknown History of Filipino Food, Hidden Cost of Cultural Assimilation, and Power of Your Voice — Rachel Lucero01:02:10

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week’s guest is Rachel Lucero. She is the host and creator of The Sago Show—a Filipino food show that seeks to examine the intricate intersectionality of culture, history, and education through creative & authentic Filipino food recipes.

Rachel is a Filipino-American and, as a former Teach For America corps member, she shares a strong passion and commitment for education and social justice, especially for those who are marginalized and underserved.

With her bachelor's in bioengineering and M.S. in education from John Hopkins University, Rachel found her unique calling on Youtube by combining her interest in cultural competency, technology, and pop culture—all through creating snack-size videos and reels on Instagram. The perfect cross-section between entertainment and education.

You can find her latest featured interview article: “Filipino Food Has a New Spokesperson” in Eater Magazine.

Rachel’s increased exposure through her brand also allowed her to give numerous public speeches this past year at USC and to the Association of Filipino Scientists in America, which helped her realize the power of her voice.

Through this realization, Rachel became more mindful and intentional with her brand and the ways she could also help elevate the voices of those who need elevated.

We believe Rachel beautifully embodies the Discover More ethos of the curious mindset, and we are beyond excited to have this conversation with her.

Thank you for listening to this week's Discover More with us and Rachel Lucero.

24 May 202168. Disrupting the Mental Health Stigma by Building Support Systems, Redefining Success, and Embracing Entrepreneurship as a Practice — Wes Woodson01:13:00

"I automatically disqualified myself from even trying because I was told that I have a learning disability. And that person wasn’t even in the room...Their voice became my voice and I limited myself and convinced myself that I wasn’t enough. And I’m thankful for my parents reminding me that I’m enough, smart enough, to be in that room. So in that book, I would write ‘You are more than enough. And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise." - Wes Woodson

Welcome back to another episode of Discover More.

This week, we continue our conversation with Wes Woodson.

Wes is the founder and chief-storyteller of thehidden, a clothing brand that inspires young people to be their true selves.

He is also a public speaker and the author of the book “I Have Anxiety (So What?)”, which will be released in the coming weeks.

In part 1 of the interview, Wes opens up about his mental health challenges that ultimately sparked his passion for helping others through storytelling. This portion was released last week as episode 67, and we recommend listening to it first as a starting point for this week’s episode.

This week, our conversation goes a bit deeper, and Wes shares a vulnerable story from his childhood.

At a young age, Wes was told that he had a learning disability, just because he learned differently then his peers. He explains that he was not only teased for this label, but also severely limited by it. The narrative he was given by the system became his self-narrative.

Luckily, his parents were incredibly supportive through these years and helped him navigate these challenges and develop self-belief.

He has gone on to deliver a TedTalk, start a company, and most recently, write a book.

Wes also describes how he views the relationship between success and happiness, as well as the attributes that he believes make a great entrepreneur.

Towards the end of the episode, Wes tells an incredible story about meeting Tommy Hilfiger in a bathroom. This story serves as a reminder to always take your shot when given an opportunity.

We hope you enjoy this wide-ranging conversation, with us, and Wes Woodson.

10 Feb 202024. Embracing Conflicts, Managing the Ego, and Exercising the Mind with Christian Buttrick00:57:22
This week’s guest is Christian Buttrick, a good friend and one of the most interesting guys we know. Christian is a high-level athlete. He played college basketball at Penn State Altoona and now, holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also has thousands of hours of meditation and Kundalini Yoga under his belt, which is extremely evident in his calm presence and humility. After graduating from college and a couple of near-death experiences, Christian realized that life is too fragile to not take the risks you know you should be taking. He then took his leap; moving to Chicago to pursue a career in IT and develop his passion for Jiu-Jitsu. In this episode, he shares his strategies for dealing with conflict, managing the ego, and approaching the biggest battle that we all face; the battle within our minds. He also shares his unique perspective on competitiveness, that is, competing only against yourself while using the standards of others as inspiration and support. We also discuss the idea that the body is the subconscious mind, and how self-care practices such as yoga and meditation, are actually for the benefit of others, not just for yourself. This interview is one of our favorites to date and we think you will take a lot out of it. We hope you enjoy this episode of Discover More, with us and Christian Buttrick. "And of course we’re going to affect ecosystems, but there will not be an ecosystem untouched by human action. Unfortunately, we’re warming the planet, and, yes, of course, the climate has changed before, but we are doing it at such a rate that no species on earth will be able to adapt. The planet has certainly changed, but over the course of thousands of years, giving species time to adapt and adjust their mechanisms, the processes they need to stay alive.” - Jess Cadorette
