30 Jun 2022 | Gundam Style (with Nic Adenau) | 01:14:35
It’s the season one finale of Did I Do That? and we are not throwing away our shot on this one! Meme curator and design leader Nic Adenau (AKA Nic A of TikTok’s Lofi Art School) joins Sean to talk Sha Na Na, Jackass’ leadership lessons, and the sketchiest way to send a $30,000 chain when it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight. You can find Nic on TikTok @lofiartschool! You can also find Lofi Art School on the web, with links to some other services if you prefer! This is the first season’s finale, but don’t worry! We’re not going anywhere—at least in one sense! Sean is venturing out into the world to record a few new guests in parts unknown, and new episodes will return August 25. Until then, though, we’ll be taking a cue from summer prime-time TV and pivoting to reruns of “old” favorites—as the extraordinarily lazy 1998 ad campaign for NBC’s summer reruns once put it, “if you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you!” If you’re hoping to get a friend into the show, though, maybe now’s a great time? Follow the show on some of the things via our website, dididothat.design! 04 May 2023 | Feed Drop: AIGA Design Podcasts, "The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression, and Reflection" | 00:44:11
Spring break nears its end (just in time for spring in Portland to actually begin), but not without a feed drop from our friends at AIGA! This special episode of the AIGA Design Podcasts feed features past guest and Director of Design Content & Learning at AIGA Lee-Sean Huang in conversation with the incredible Anne H. Berry, Jennifer Rittner, and Kelly Walters about their book The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection as part of the the 2022 AIGA Design Conference in Seattle. The Black Experience in Design is an anthology centering a range of perspectives, spotlights teaching practices, research, stories, and conversations from a Black/African diasporic lens. Through the voices represented, this text exemplifies the inherently collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of design, providing access to ideas and topics for a variety of audiences, meeting people as they are and wherever they are in their knowledge about design. This panel, featuring some of the book's editors, reflects on the process of publishing the book, and highlights some of the themes contained within the perspectives and stories within. The panel is fantastic, and I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of the book from the Black Experience in Design website, directly from Skyhorse Publishing, or wherever you find books! Special thanks to AIGA and Lee-Sean Huang for this feed drop—go check out and subscribe to the AIGA Design Podcasts feed, and go check out some what'll be happening as part of the 2023 AIGA Design Conference to be held in NEW YORK CITY?! If you're listening to this on the day it comes out and you're in the Portland metro area, please come pay my students a visit at Be Honest, our humongous student portfolio showcase event at Wieden+Kennedy! It'll be a good time! This episode was recorded by AIGA as part of the 2022 AIGA Design Conference in Seattle, Washington, on October 22, 2022. Hosted on Acast. 07 Sep 2023 | Fontroversy #1: "Wingdings: Cheugy Emoji?" | 00:46:16
Good news, everyone! We just hit 25,000 listens—which is even more impressive considering that it's been less than a year since we hit 5,000! To celebrate (and not at all to cover a production gap caused by my having to move), I'm sharing the first episode of the limited series spin-off I made with my DES 399 class last term, Fontroversy! It's a really hilarious way to get anyone at all excited about fonts with a great mix of silly stuff and true history, and should be perfect for anyone who likes what we do here. Too, I'd love some feedback on what you might want out of a Did I Do That? Patreon could look like! If you have ideas or would just want to show your support, drop me a line at ss3@pdx.edu! If you want to show your support for DIDT, tell a friend about the show, either in meatspace or on MySpace, or consider a one-time "Buy Me A Coffee" tip—It'd mean a lot! 14 Dec 2023 | Making Mistakes Confessional | 00:57:21
As both Season 3 and 2023 draw to a close, the time to seek forgiveness is at hand! Earlier this year, Did I Do That? set up a confessional booth—with Sean playing the role as part priest, part Frasier Crane—to collect true stories of design disasters, missteps, failures, and more from anonymous guests who sought to clear their guilty consciences. How can you find peace when faced with cross crossworders, ghost(ed) cookbooks, and duck pornography? There’s only one way to find out! (To be clear: the way is listening; you must listen to find out.) WANT A DESIGN CONFESSIONAL AT YOUR EVENT? If you have a live event and want me to set up another design confessional for it, either in Portland or beyond, let’s talk! I’d love to do more events like this in the future. SPECIAL THANKS The clips used in this episode were collected as part of “Future Fonts and Friends,” a party held for TypeCon 2023 at Outlet in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, August 17, 2023. All guests were indeed anonymous, and so if you hear any familiar voices, I guess just ignore that? Come to think of it, what do real priests do about that problem?! Huge thanks to past guest Lizy Gershenzhon and Travis Kochel of Future Fonts for inviting me to be a part of the event, to the organizers of TypeCon for putting up with me, and to my 2023 MVP Orion Cortez for building the confessional booths based solely on two terrible sketches I made. Additional thanks to past guest Kate Bingaman-Burt of Outlet for her eternal support of / patience with me just in general, but especially the white-hot ball of stress that is me when faced with a live event. Thanks, too, to the kind folks at Jolby—who didn’t even have anything to do with the party and had no reason to help me!—for letting me steal power from them for a couple of hours just because I happened to set up next to their studio. YOU’VE MADE IT THIS FAR… I want to all of you listeners out there for keeping this show going and growing. This marks the end of both our third season and second year, and I don’t think I ever would have imagined there would be as many folks out there following it as there are around the world. If you’ve enjoyed the first two years of this show, please tell a friend! I want to keep this project growing, and the community around it growing as well.

28 Dec 2023 | Fontroversy #2: "Comic Sans: From Their Hate Came Love (And Money)" | 00:30:23
Graphic design may be our passion, but everybody needs a break too! While Did I Do That? is off for a few weeks between seasons, enjoy a few episodes of our sister podcast Fontroversy, produced by one of Sean's classes in Spring 2023. If you missed episode 1, no worries—unlike the glut of superhero cinematic universe movies out there, there's nothing there you need to know to enjoy to this one! If you want to revisit it, though, you can find it here! When a typeface ripped from the funny pages starts to get contentious, surprise guest expert Whitney McPhie (currently serving as Interim Creative Director at Willamette Week) intervenes to school Lena and Sean on what Comic Sans can really do. IMPORTANT EDITORIAL CORRECTION: Gentle Giants Dog Food does NOT, in fact, use Comic Sans on its packaging—it instead uses a DaFont-style Disney-inspired sans paired with, of all things, Bank Gothic Sean apologies for this truly shameful oversight, although in their defense, attempting to look at any one specific type block on the package without being immediately distracted is basically impossible. 08 Feb 2024 | Feed Drop: Two Designers Walk Into a Bar | 00:29:29
To close out our season break, I wanted to share one last feed drop! The creators of Two Designers Walk Into A Bar reached out a few weeks back to connect as fellow creators of media about design that doesn't take design too seriously. They make a really fun show, and this episode comes from the end of their third season covering a subject my students have heard me talk about many times: one of the most financially catastrophic packaging redesigns in history. It's a really wonderful show—give it a listen and then give them a follow! You can find them on whatever podcasting platform you like, as well as Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn! Two Designers Walk Into a Bar, Episode 50: The Pepsi (Logo) ChallengePepsi announced it’s moving forward by moving backwards (sort of), returning to more of a traditional look for their logo and cans. (Think black. It's a slimming color.) But as they kick their last logo to the curb, we go back in time to discuss how they became saddled with this burdensome brand look in the first place. We talk ovals, smiles, globes, magnetic fields and cosmic forces of the universe in this special breathtaking and scientifically-tangential episode. Images, articles and links mentioned in this episode can be found on their episode page: https://www.twodesignerswalkintoabar.com/episodes/episode-50-pepsi-logo-story This episode was originally published June 7, 2023. General Podcast Info:Two Designers Walk Into a Bar is a podcast about iconic design and popular culture. Hosted by graphic designers and collectors Todd Coats and Elliot Strunk, the podcast is constantly looking at pop culture and thinking about how it influences us and what we do for a living. Starting with a theme, we choose iconic work that we find meaningful and use humor and insight to break it down, turn it inside out and try to understand why it has stood the test of time. Two Designers Walk Into a Bar encourages listeners to dive into their libraries, mini storage units or memories with us. You can find Mel on the internet over at melerrez.com, where you can see some most of the work we talked about in this episode. Mel can also be found on the ‘gram at @melerrez as well. Too, if you want to see Mel’s awesome illustrated timeline, that can be found on the episode’s page at dididothat.design! This episode was recorded Friday, April 12, 2024 in the Rat’s Nest. Though I forgot to shout him out in the outro, this episode was also edited by the great Orion Cortez! Thanks, Orion! If you are hearing this as it comes out and are in the Portland area, please come out to Be Honest on Saturday May 4, 2023! Be Honest is PSUGD’s annual student portfolio showcase, which I help organize with Kate Bingaman-Burt! It’s a really exciting time, and we get to take over three floors of Wieden+Kennedy for design work, hijinks, and good times. You can find out more about it at psu.gd/behonest or @psugd_behonest on the ‘gram! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
16 May 2024 | Oh Crap, This Is What I Make It (with César Sierra) | 01:42:43
Feeling like your week is lacking a dash of Did I Do That? You could add something—it’s just a suggestion! Freelance brand and identity designer César Sierra joins Sean to talk about gamifying Jiffy Mix, getting lost with Matt, and Busytown careers. Will Sean get rabies before the season is over? There’s only one way to find out! You can find César’s work on their website, cesarsierra.net! If you’re looking to hire César, connect with them on Linked in at linkedin.com/in/cesarvsierra! This episode was recorded Sunday, April 14, 2024, in the Rat’s Nest. Though I (again) forgot to shout him out in the outro, this episode was edited by the great Orion Cortez! Thanks, Orion! 30 May 2024 | Jazz It Up and Make It Pop! (with David DaCosta) | 01:41:46
Wake your partner up at 2 in the morning, because it’s all been building to this—our season 4 finale! David DaCosta (designer, illustrator, and writer of both Jokey Jokes: A Collection of Illustrated Dad Jokes and the new Jokier Jokes: Another Illustrated Collection of Dad Jokes) joins Sean to talk rock and roll accounting, the circular file, and Too Much Good(?) Stuff.
This episode’s cold open included clips from our episodes with Kristin Rogers Brown and Emily Tate; you can hear the full conversations, which are chock full of more mascot chat, in our back catalog. That segment also featured the song “Action Strike,” written and performed by Rafael Krux and distributed under a CC0 license. This episode was recorded Saturday, April 27, 2024 in the Rat’s Nest, which I am beginning to think is less an office and more a locus at which the earth’s EM radiation is focused to a fine and impossible-to-filter point. Thanks, 1920s architects and 1950s electricians, for your fine work on this monument to buzzing. I only hope not too much of it made it to air, but if you can hear it, I apologize—I did my best! This episode was once again guest edited by the great Orion Cortez; I couldn’t have done this season without him! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
13 Jun 2024 | Summer Kick-Off! | 00:07:00
Season 4 has wrapped and season 5 is coming in September, so what's happening in the time between? We'll have a few fun "Whoopsies" in the form of experimental episodes to share, maybe hear from some past favorites, and even have some surprises on the horizon! It's going to be a treat, and hopefully this programming note can help tide us over until that schedule starts. Want to hear about the latest? Be sure you're subscribed to the feed on whatever platform you use to listen to podcasts (you can find links to all of them in the sidebar on the site), or follow us on Instagram @dididothat.design! Summer break continues, and we've got big news: we're launching a newsletter! You can hear the latest about Did I Do That?—including some stuff coming later this summer that's still under wraps—first by going to dididothat.design/newsletter to subscribe. We're also turning back the clock to season 2 for one of Sean's favorite episodes! Kate Carter (founder and creative director of Saint Friend) joined Sean way back in October 2022 to talk about the heated rivalries between niche dog enthusiast magazines, the parts of the phone that art directors DON’T want you to see, and how to visit a mausoleum on hard mode. You can find Kate’s work with Saint Friend on the studio’s website, saintfriend.co, or on Instagram @saint_friend. Kate, Nick, and the whole team at Saint Friend do some of the best, most joyful branding work out there, and that team brimming with some of PSUGD’s best and brightest alums to boot. Check them out! 11 Jul 2024 | It's Gotta Be Moo (with Lizy Gershenzon) [Rerun] | 01:00:08
Rerun summer continues! In this timely episode from way back in 2022, Future Fonts co-founder and all around rad person Lizy Gershenzon joined Sean to talk pieces of flair, the opposite of missed connections, and The Rainbow Passage. We’re going back to high school and making font magic in an episode that’s got milk—just not in an officially licensed form. Since this episode came out way back in early 2022, Lizy and Travis have launched the Vectro Type Foundry, home of favorites like the acclaimed Chartwell, Kicker, and Whoa, but also home to new fantastic faces like the incredible Kablammo—check them out and give them a download! Lizy and Travis, along with fellow co-founder James Edmundson of Ohno Type Co., co-founded Future Fonts, where you can get experimental typefaces while they're still in development and help support their creators through the process! It's one of the best places to find new and emerging type, and a great place to start for someone who's new to type and wanting to find out how fun it can be first hand. 25 Jul 2024 | Sometimes The Moment Needs Extra Mayo (with Kyle Letendre) [Rerun] | 00:58:07
Rerun summer continues with another past guest from way back in 2022—lettering designer extraordinaire and Portland flower fan Kyle Letendre joins Sean to talk Minnesota’s missing lakes, misguided entrepreneurial spirit, and rebrands that aren’t quite making the grade. We’re filling in the pixels in that JPEG manually in person while we get to the bottom of a question that’s been on everyone’s mind: what’s Sean’s favorite food color? Kyle most recently did artwork for TypeCon 2024's identity, which you can see on the TypeCon website. Not-so-coincidentally enough, the day this episode is re-released (Thursday, July 25, 2024) Fontroversy's Lena Hall and I will be appearing at TypeCon's Education Forum to present about the type education side of how Fontroversy came to be—it's going to be a real kick, and if you're going to be attending TypeCon, check out the EdForum schedule page on TypeCon's website for scheduling information. Stay tuned to the newsletter, too, Fontroversy friends, for more news on the show coming later this summer! Also the night this episode comes out, I'll be at Future Fonts & Friends holding our second ever Making Mistakes Confessional! That event is free, open to the public, packed with friends of the show, and is your chance to share any design foibles that have been haunting you with our design therapist-in-residence. Future Fonts & Friends is happening at Outlet (2500 NE Sandy Blvd. in Portland) from 6–9pm. Hope to hear you there! Stay tuned for more event news, including more information about our Seattle show, in the newsletter! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
08 Aug 2024 | Quivering Filthy Jamboree (with Dan Rhatigan) [rerun] | 01:07:33
Summertime fun-time rerun-time continues, but before it does, some big news: I'm doing a live Did I Do That? in Seattle for Seattle Design Festival on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 4:15pm in Lake Union Park! I'll be joined on stage by the incredible Terry Marks! Terry Marks is an award-winning designer with laurels from the likes of HOW, Print, Communication Arts, Neenah, Potlatch and more. He had judged a number of national and local design competitions and is a published author, twice for Rockport Publishers and yet his favorite might be Mr. Crumbly Dreams a Tiger for O’Neil Printing + Rule29. Terry is a champion of collaboration, fan of the kind and good, Fellow of AIGA Seattle, and veteran of the Executive Board of the AIGA National Board of Directors. I hope you can make it out to the live show—it's going to be really special to bring this silly podcast to the SDF mainstage and bring it to friends new and old out in Seattle! This week in the feed, though: To close out 2022, we called in The Fixer! “Logotype surgeon” and type designer Dan Rhatigan (Director of Type Products at Type Network) sits down with Sean to talk about failing successfully, gifts from fast food heaven, and not quite getting to act with Gwyneth Paltrow in a high school musical. You can find Dan’s work all over the internet—his blog is at ultrasparky.org, and he can be found @ultrasparky on Twitter and @bijoutype on Instagram. Speaking of the latter, his foundry Bijou Type (bijoutype.com) should be up an d running soon with an update of Dan’s beautiful graduate school typeface project you can add to your own type collection. His fantastic Pink Mince zine series can be found and purchased at pinkmince.com and @pinkmince on Twitter. 22 Aug 2024 | The Surreal World (with Lee-Sean Huang) [rerun] | 00:55:48
THREE big pieces of news! #1: Season 5 is coming on Thursday, September 5! Now is a great time to get subscribed and ready—we've got a killer roster already lined up and you won't want to miss it! #2: If you weren't able to get out to our Seattle live show as part of Seattle Design Festival, not to worry! SDF has published a video of the whole show to their YouTube channel that you can watch, either on its own or paired with the other SDF Day 1 Mainstage presentations. It was so wonderful to get to connect with Seattle's design community and to share a stage with the great Terry Marks! Big thanks to the entire team at SDF for making the show happen! #3: There is still more summer news yet to be revealed, and as soon as I can do it, I plan to publish the announcement to the folks who read our newsletter first, so if you're not already signed up, what are you waiting for? Christmas? That's a long time away and you will know what the announcement is well in advance of December 25, unless you are very, very inattentive. Don't wait—subscribe to the newsletter and let it be your Christmas miracle! This week in the feed as our final rerun of summer: those tossed salads and scrambled eggs must have been calling again back at the midpoint of season 2, because Did I Do That? was in Seattle for the AIGA Design Conference 2022! Lee-Sean Huang (Creative Director of Foossa and Director of Design Content & Learning at AIGA) joins Sean to talk dialup conspiracies, leveraging the combined might of the Center for Academic Precocity and the Cronkite School of Journalism to make a reality show, and what business people think about. You can find more about Lee-Sean at his website, leesean.net, or follow him nearly anywhere social by searching for the handle @leesean. You can learn more about Foossa’s work in service design, futurecasting, and more at foossa.com. You can find the Lee-Sean's podcasting work with the AIGA on their site, or by searching for "AIGA Design Podcast" wherever you prefer your pod-based experiences are found; AIGA recently has been expanding their podcast and exploring the theme of "Margins" and it's been really great to listen to—go check it out! This episode was recorded at the 2022 AIGA Design Conference in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, October 22, 2022 and originally published on Thursday, November 17, 2022 as part of season 2. Is it profane? Is it irreverent? Why not both! Jen Wick (Creative Services Manager at the Port of Portland) joins Sean to talk about the gateway drug that is Sassy magazine, waxing your layouts, and the lessons life teaches us about futility and precarity. Get ready for a rude awakening! You can find Jen Wick’s work on her freelance studio website, fortwick.com. You can also see her team’s work across the Port of Portland’s properties, including the newly revamped Portland International Airport. ONE LAST REMINDER! Apologies for the occasional audio glitch in this episode—rest assured that I’m doing my best to find a way to fix this in future, up to and including possibly buying a new computer. Unrelatedly, now is a great time to remind folks that I do have a “Buy Me A Coffee” link to offer small donations to support the show if you can. Even a dollar or two helps! 31 Oct 2024 | Tales from the Making Mistakes Confessional, Volume II | 00:51:15
The Simpsons switches formats to horror anthology series this time of year, so shall Did I Do That?—we’ve got a collection of some of the scariest design disasters, missteps, failures, and goofs that have haunted designers this past summer at Future Fonts & Friends 2024! How can our anonymous designer ghosts find peace when haunted by a trifecta of specters in the form of opening up your letters’ chakras, gingerbread power moves, and the challenges of Lidz franchising. Listen… IF YOU DARE! WANT A DESIGN CONFESSIONAL AT YOUR EVENT? If you have a live event and want me to set up another design confessional for it, either in Portland or beyond, let’s talk! I’d love to do more events like this in the future. SPECIAL THANKS The confessions used in this episode were collected as part of “Future Fonts and Friends,” a party held for TypeCon 2024 at Outlet in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, July 25, 2024. All guests were cloaked in the shadow of anonymity—the scariest thing of all in our personal brand building world! Take that, social media! Thank you to all who came out and participated! Huge thanks again to Lizy Gershenzhon and Travis Kochel of Future Fonts for inviting me to be a part of the event, to the organizers of TypeCon for putting up with me, and (once again) to MVP Orion Cortez for building the confessional booths way back in 2023 based solely on two terrible sketches I made, then coming back out in 2024 to help me set them up again. Additional thanks to past guest Kate Bingaman-Burt of Outlet for her eternal support of / patience with me just in general, but especially the white-hot ball of stress that is me when faced with a live event. This episode features a parody of Billie Eilish’s new song “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” and a parody of the character the Crypt Keeper, brought to death by John Kassir. Hosted on Acast. 14 Nov 2024 | “What Do You Mean, More Energy!?” (with Melissa Delzio) | 01:40:34

Melissa Delzio (freelance designer and founder of Portland Design History) to talk about the dangers of MTV Spring Break, robocalls, and the peacemaker. You can find Melissa all over the internet, starting at her website meldel.com! That’s where her annual reports live—they’re both lovely and a great way to see what it’s actually like to make a living as a freelancer. Melissa can be found on Instagram @meldelpdx. Melissa’s long-running project Portland Design History can be found at portlanddesignhistory.com. There are tons of great collections on the site, including some relating to what we talked about in the episode. Check it out, or give the project a follow on Instagram @portlandesignhistory. The penultimate episode of Season 5 is bringing the receipts! Multidisciplinary designer and artist Libby Landauer joins Sean to talk about Facebook Marketplace bargains, the pitches the Mad Men didn’t win, and the best place to get a polish in the Bay Area. Libby can be found all over the ‘net, including on Instagram @libland. You can also see some of their work, including Slutheby’s Live Auction, on their website, libbylandauer.com; keep an eye out there for future dates for the play! You can find more about the Community for Positive Aging on their website, communityfpa.org. As Libby says, it’s an intergenerational, space, and if you have some free time this holiday season and want to give back, it sounds like a great, fun place to volunteer some time! Music by Mykola Sosin from Pixabay. This episode was recorded Saturday, November 16, 2024 in the Rat’s Nest. Our next episode will be our last of the season, and the show’s three year anniversary. It’s the finale of Did I Do That? Season Five* and our third anniversary—this really must be the best of both worlds! Fellow Las Vegas ex-pat Ely Kim (Senior Creative at Wieden+Kennedy) joins Sean to talk about childhood limousine dreams, the weird science behind casino carpet, and memorable fast food mascots. Be sure to listen through to the very end—you won’t(?) regret it! You can find Ely and his email button on his website, welikehim.com! You can also give Ely a follow on Instagram @welikehim! 09 Jan 2025 | Live at Seattle Design Festival 2024 (with Terry Marks) | 01:01:04
We’re kicking off the new year at Did I Do That? with something old, something new (to some of you), and something borrowed, so don’t be blue: it’s our live show from Seattle Design Festival 2024! Seattle’s own Terry Marks joined Sean on the mainstage in Lake Union Park to talk through Hey Reb!’s proportions, the curse of eternal life (via stock photo modeling), and InDesign’s spellcheck dictionary. If you want to find more about Terry’s work, the best place to visit is tmarksdesign.com! While I am happy to direct any calls back to Terry, feel free to reach out to him if you’re interested in the reprint edition of Mr. Crumbley Dreams a Tiger. While this is an audio-only version of the outdoor recording, you can watch the video version of this episode on SDF’s YouTube channel. Too, while I’ve done my best to clean up the ambient noise present on the day, you may hear the odd bit of wind noise as well as more than a few seagulls. May these soothing sounds of summer help warm you through a chilly January. Big thanks to Terry Marks for being a part, as well as to the whole crew at Seattle Design Festival! It was such a treat to be a part of it! Thanks to Annalee Shum for coordinating and programming us, to our volunteer Maxine to helping with the production, and to Adrian Pacheco who both worked the boards for the event and was kind enough to share these files! Thanks, and goodnight, Seattle! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
23 Jan 2025 | Did I Do That? presents Fontroversy: Arial, Live at AIGA Design Conference 2024 | 00:39:04
To kick off 2025, Did I Do That? is turning back the clock back to the waning days of Brat Summer for Fontroversy, live at the AIGA Design Conference! Host Lena Hall (freelance designer) and producer Sean Schumacher (Host of Did I Do That? and Ass’t Professor at PSUGD) talk through type’s best known knock-off(?), Arial. Is it a grotesque Frankensteining or merely a case of typeface carcinisation? Is Arial hate the design blogosphere’s first hot take? Is Lena the only person ever to have actually watched the Minecraft: Story Mode show? ABOUT THE SHOW: Fontroversy is a limited series podcast created by Portland State University Graphic Design students in 2023. You can learn more about PSU’s Schnitzer School of Art, Art History, and Design at pdx.edu/art-design. This edition was presented as part of the AIGA Design Conference in October 2024. Special thanks to Lee-Sean Huang and the team at AIGA for selecting us to be a part of the conference. We <3 AIGA! WANT TO HEAR MORE? 06 Feb 2025 | Feed Drop: The Snack Table | 00:25:32
We're closing out our inter-season break yet another thing that's new to you—and in this case, everybody else, too—the world premiere of a new video podcast! Ali Hart's new show The Snack Table takes some of the strangest snacks out there and gives them the taste test you frankly may have both wanted to see and feared in equal measure. It's easily one of the funniest things I've ever been involved with, and Ali has graciously allowed us to hear the premiere episode where she and I review gummies a day early—in audio only form. If you want to see what we're eating (and the horrible reactions we're having to it), the only way to watch is by subscribing to The Snack Table's channel. One secret tip for listeners of this show: even though the premiere is technically happening tomorrow, this episode will actually go up later today (February 6, 2025), so keep your eyes peeled for it! We'll be back in two weeks with our season 6 trailer for Did I Do That? so keep your ears peeled! I've been working hard to kick off our season with a slate of amazing guests and I'd love for you to share the show with a friend when that trailer drops. See you in two weeks! Hosted on Acast. 20 Feb 2025 | Reintroducing Did I Do That? | 00:01:00
Everybody who's ever tried to make something has done it: ball up a terrible idea and throw it in the trash before anyone else managed to get their eyes on it. When you do creative work for a living, though, mistakes just come with the territory. Did I Do That? gives designers a chance to get some fresh eyes on that ball of shame while showing it who's boss by laughing about it. Every other Thursday, Sean Schumacher (Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University) sits down and talks to a guest designer about how they got to where they're at, as well as all the good, bad, and weird things that happened along the way. Whether you do creative work or just want to see how the sausage gets made, it's a good time! Our 6th season premiere drops March 6, and Sean is venturing out of the studio in Portland to kick things off with some very special conversations. You won't want to miss it—tell a friend and see you there! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
06 Mar 2025 | Resting Smile Face (with Alyssa Walker) | 01:34:54
We’ve clawed our way here to San Francisco for the season 6 premiere of Did I Do That?! The incredible Alyssa Walker (Creative Director at WIRED) joins Sean to talk about where new toys come from, grind mode, and the Miyazaki of Rite Aid. The best way to see Alyssa’s work is to subscribe to WIRED, which comes in print and digital subscriptions and starts as low as $10 for the first year. Better still, your subscription gives you access to some of the best tech journalism (and journalism at the intersection of politics and tech) that you can find. You can also find Alyssa on the web at alyssawalker.me, or on Instagram @_alyssawalker. This episode was recorded January 30, 2025 in the offices of WIRED in downtown San Francisco. 20 Mar 2025 | This Is Supposed To Be Fun (with Bob Aufuldish) | 01:11:02
Call up the Michaels and bust out as many classroom gimmicks as you can because Did I Do That? is wrapping up our trip to the Old Bay (aka San Francisco) by going back to school. The legendary Bob Aufuldish (partner at Aufuldish & Warriner and Professor of Design at CCA) joins Sean in Bob’s San Anselmo studio to talk about designer golfballs, the challenge of being taken seriously as a young professor, and typeface impulse buys. Bob’s long-time practice with his wife and partner Kathy Warinner, Aufuldish and Warinner, can be found online at aufwar.com. You can find the interview Bob did a few years back for AIGA SF with fellow CCA professor Eric Heiman on the AIGA SF website—that article expands on a few of the stories we talked through here and is a ton of fun! You can buy Bob’s type work as FontBoy on MyFonts, or just check out the (lovely but frozen in amber) FontBoy website at fontboy.com. This episode was recorded February 1, 2025 in Bob’s studio in the wilds of Marin, in beautiful San Anselmo, California. Thank you so much to Bob and Kathy for hosting me (and letting me scarf down so many of their Trader Joe’s cookies while I was out there)! Hosted on Acast. 03 Apr 2025 | What I Just Did Was MAGIC! (with Ben Barry) | 02:07:11
Feeling too arty for the nerds and too nerdy for the artists? Did I Do That? is the sweet spot for you! The great Ben Barry (co-founder of the Facebook Analog Research Laboratory and founder of Nonlinear) joins Sean to talk about edible arrangements for Spring, the secondary market for guillotines, and realizing that it’s time (for Frasier) to move on (from the hit NBC sitcom Frasier). You can find Ben’s work on his personal site, benbarry.com; that’s also where you can find links to his prints and book through particular.co. Ben brought me a copy of his book One Hundred Patterns and I can’t recommend it highly enough; it is more than 200 pages of gorgeous offset-printed patterns! Ben writes about all things tech on his blog, Active Matrix. Finally, you can find some of his more recent work on both Instagram and Threads as @benbarry. This episode was recorded March 8, 2025 in the Rat’s Nest. This episode was edited by the one and only Orion Cortez—one of the best there is and always a miracle worker! Hosted on Acast. 17 Apr 2025 | Tumbling Down That Hill (with Kel Lauren) | 01:48:10
Call in the pygmy goats and have Gunther pour you a hot cup of cereal, because a little indie show called Did I Do That? has hit the midpoint of season 6! Merchandise Designer and Design YouTube powerhouse Kel Lauren joins Sean to talk about anniversary cereals, the intersection of goth and twee, and what a rock star does with three grand. You can find Kel all over the internet, from their website to their YouTube channel to their Instagram. Kel and fellow design content creator Elliot Ulm create their own hilarious and joyful design show called kelliot!—if you want to watch them work, you can find their collaborative channel on YouTube, but you can also find them across the podcast player spectrum, including the big names like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Anyone who is a fan of this deeply non-serious design podcast is definitely going to enjoy theirs, so go give them a listen! Too, if you really like kelliot! and want even more, you can hear their Unmedikelliot! bonus show through the kelliot! Patreon. This episode was recorded March 14, 2025 in the Rat’s Nest. 01 May 2025 | Dude, I Could’ve Been A Doctor (with Peter Yue) | 01:16:27
We’re wreaking havoc but at least we’re not raging a-holes! Advertising idea guy and art dude Peter Yue joins Sean to talk about Jeff Bezos’ hedge fund, Las Vegas bartenders, and the most terrifying thing Gen Z found inside Pandora’s Box. You can find Peter online at peteryue.com, or very rarely on the ‘gram at @peteryue. This episode was recorded April 13, 2025 in the Rat’s Nest (well before The Incident took the iMac mentioned in this episode). Apologies to the folks at AdAge, who I incorrectly characterized in this episode as having selected Jake from State Farm over the M&Ms the winner in the final round of their March Madness Brand Mascot championship bracket. In actuality, it was M&Ms who narrowly defeated Jake, however it is frankly still bizarre that Jake beat—y’know—dozens more mascots that are ACTUAL MASCOTS. Ad industry, I know you don’t understand TikTok, but just because Jake has a TikTok doesn’t mean young people are going to buy his overpriced insurance when neither they nor I can afford cars. 15 May 2025 | Wingin’ It A Lot (with Lisa Congdon) | 00:59:32
Let a new Did I Do That? light a fire under your ass! Legendary illustrator Lisa Congdon joins Sean to talk about what’s in teachers’ dreams, poetry awards, and hamster wheels. You can find Lisa’s work all over the internet, but why not visit her website at lisacongdon.com first! There, you can find her work, classes, and more. Lisa is on Instagram as the one and only @lisacongdon. If you happen to be in Portland, you can also find Lisa’s shop at Cargo Emporium—it’s a massive space full of work from Lisa and a few other past guests, and is just cool to explore! This episode was recorded March 25, 2025 in the Rat’s Nest. One programming note: This is our last recording that was banked before the big break-in. As such, there may be some delay in publishing the next episode. While I’ll do my best to keep that from happening, please keep an eye on the Instagram, Bluesky, or Substack for the latest, whatever the case may be (and hey, if you want to kick a couple bucks my way to help out while things are getting figured out, too, I won’t say no to that). Thank you for listening and sorry for any potential upcoming interruption! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
09 Dec 2021 | Introducing Did I Do That? | 00:01:20
Graphic design may be my passion, but danged if it isn't awfully weird to do too. Did I Do That? is all about that! It's a new podcast what it's like to really make design and make mistakes, because you can't do one without the other. Every other week, Sean Schumacher (Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University) is joined by a guest from the world of design with a special story about their own mistakes starting out, how they ended up where they did, and other traditional topics pertinent to podcast listeners like "what was the weather like on the day they recorded this?" and "is this really the name of the show? Like, for sure?" Sound good? Did I Do That? comes out every other Thursday starting December 16. Subscribe now, won't you? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
27 Jan 2022 | A Michael Bay Film in App Form (with Jordan Rosenblum) | 00:52:29
Jordan Rosenblum (visual designer/educator/socially engaged artist) joins Sean to talk blobby blue friends, a whole lot of chrome, and The Egg Space. Sean, meanwhile, spends a solid five minutes talking about a plastic skeleton in an apron at a business he never goes to! It’s the episode that finally diagrams it out for everybody who’s been dying to know: culture is where the RAM slot is and psycholinguistics is the foot. The more attention you draw to it, the more tomblike it feels!Learn more about Jordan’s work at https://jordanrosenblum.com!Follow "Did I Do That?" on some of the things via our website, https://dididothat.design!If you enjoyed this episode, why not tell a friend (please ignore the many obvious reasons why not)? Please also rate us highly on your podcast platform of choice, even in spite of the note that will follow this paragraph!Editor’s note: much like an actual Michael Bay film not in app form, this episode suffers from a bit of overzealous editing. 10 Feb 2022 | Gnomes: True Secrets Revealed (with Briar Levit) | 00:50:24
Text ahoy! Designer, design historian, and filmmaker Briar Levit joins Sean to talk about the history of rude t-shirts, the secret to eternal life (for magazines), and the great shame of (a) PDA. Sean makes a guest say “ew,” which frankly is mostly surprising in that it took five whole episodes for it to happen. Remember: if you want to buy technology, don’t buy it at the mall! Lettering artist extraordinaire and Portland foliage fan Kyle Letendre joins Sean to talk Minnesota’s missing lakes, misguided entrepreneurial spirit, and rebrands that aren’t quite making the grade. 24 Feb 2022 | Undercover Blankets (with Brendan Mulligan) | 00:48:45
It’s nearly March 2022, which means it’s time for the last episode recorded in 2021, and it’s one that starts pretty real and raw before pivoting into cookie shoptalk and the usual nonsense. Brendan Mulligan (Nike Tees Graphics and @coolkidbrendan) joins Sean to talk about what they want on their Tombstones, sneeze guards, and the nightmarish realm that is the McDonald's Play Place. What even is design? We’re just talking about specific pastry vendors at the Portland State University Saturday farmers market. Serenity now! You can find Brendan at @coolkidbrendan on many platforms! You can find more about his work at coolkidbrendan.com! 13 Jan 2022 | Very Dramatic Trash Can (with Kate Bingaman-Burt) | 00:53:31
Illustrator-entrepreneur-educator-multi-hyphenate-powerhouse Kate Bingaman Burt joins Sean to talk cheerleading, kiln-based graphic design, and the always enticing vegetable medley. Sean, meanwhile, forgets that it is his job to talk on the show he hosts and unintentionally continues our student publication double-header by editing pre-taped episodes in the wrong order! We’re breaking all the rules on this one—it’s not going to look like what your grandma’s making! Follow Kate at @katebingburt on all the things!
