30 Oct 2019S2 Ep31: Can Indigenous Representation Save Canadian Tourism?00:55:04
Canada is known for its beautiful mountains, wild nature, cosmopolitan cities and more. But what’s lacking from our tourism is Indigenous representation.

The National Post published an article earlier this year arguing that Canada’s “branding” as a place to visit is completely void of Indigenous culture, and that incorporating Indigenous culture would boost tourism and support Indigenous communities.

We invited Ryan McMahon, host of Red Man Laughing and CANADALAND's Thunder Bay, on the podcast to help us delve into this discussion.

13 Nov 2019S2 Ep32: How Dangerous is Too Dangerous?00:44:42
When people talk about travel, they often bring up “danger.” When you share where you're traveling to next, how often are you asked, "But is that safe?".

In this episode, we break this down into three facets, perceptions of danger, political danger, and danger imposed on local communities (plus we threw a few extras in there because this topic a big one!).

Zach joins Erin on the podcast again and this time we're talking danger.
What makes a place dangerous? How dangerous is too dangerous? What does it say about you if you travel for the thrill of danger?

27 Nov 2019S2 Ep33: Traveling Trans, Experiencing a Gendered World 00:41:27
According to a US transgender survey from 2015, nearly half of those who flew in 2014 experienced problems relating to being transgender. In this episode, Erin is joined by the amazing Peppermint, a trans black woman to discuss further (you might also recognize her as the runner up from season 9 of RuPauls Drag Race!).

Peppermint, who joined us remotely from a cab in New York, talks about her experiences traveling and touring from a “identity-first” framework, and to share with us the challenges she faces.

From airport security around the world, to passing privilege and pretty privilege, Peppermint breaks down how her identity as not only a trans women, but also a black women, effects her experience of travel through a world that is still very gendered.

11 Dec 2019S2 Ep34: Should We Extreme Travel? 00:50:16
There is a small subset of travelers that take travel thrills to the extreme. Very extreme.

Andrew Drury joins us in this episode to discuss the ethics around extreme travel. To date, Andrew has ventured into insurgent Afghanistan, he’s been threatened at gun-point by the KKK, and he’s encountered ISIS in the Middle East. Andrew's adventures have been the subject of many news articles, and, you might recognize him from the Netflix show, Dark Tourist.

Erin questions the power imbalance between extreme tourists and local guides, and discusses the focus on truth-finding in conflict zones.  It is possible to learn the complexities of a country that is stereotyped by war? ...And should we travel there?

08 Jan 2020S2 Ep36: Travel "Back in the Day" and Exploring Soviet Russia00:48:47
The way that we travel is constantly changing.
Just 20 years ago, for example, travelers didn't have Google Maps to guide them, or social media to keep them connected to family and friends at home.

Join Erin as she chats with a fellow solo woman traveler, Valika Kunkel. Valika tells the story of how she boarded her first transatlantic flight in the early 60s at age 13 - completely alone. She shares her experiences from traveling by car through Soviet Russia to connecting with other travelers on trains, without the help of social media!

22 Jan 2020S2 Ep37: Surf Camps and Oppression Lasagna00:48:38
Around the world, from Nicaragua to Morocco, women’s surf camps are popping up. It seems clear that in countries with traditional views of gender, surfing has emerged as hobby for women. But it’s also an expression of freedom, and sometimes protest. Karam Masri joins Erin to discuss her experience at surf camps around the world, and how her identity as a plus-sized, brown woman has influenced her experiences traveling.

The story of surfing and empowerment extends beyond the surf retreats that have become popular for North American women - in other parts of the world, surfing has become an expression of opposition to patriarchy. Women are using surfing to prove that they are every bit as capable and badass as the men that have dominated the sport, and we see these examples in world class, female surfers like Sabah Adu Ghanim in Gaza, Meryem El Gardoum in Morocco, and Ishita Malaviya

04 Mar 2020S2 Ep40: Should We Feel #FLYSHAME? 00:42:00
Did you know that in Sweden, flying is NOT something to be proud of? The notion that you should feel guilty every time you board a plane is a feeling plaguing Scandinavia.

In this first part of our two part sustainable travel series, we're joined by Evelina Utterdahl, an environmentalist, climate activist, and sustainable traveler who publically pledged to stop flying entirely. We discuss what impact flying has on the environment and how we can reduce this impact. We also explore the nuance of #FlyShame: the privilege and accessibility that's needed to give up flying altogether.

18 Mar 2020S2 Ep42: Your Guide to Sustainable Travel00:51:52
We're looking at sustainable travel at ground level. We're back with Earth Wanderess, Evelina Utterdahl, and this time Greg Hill to discuss our earth-bound travel habits and how we can do better. We dissect what it really means to be a sustainable traveler.

For decades, nature has provided Greg the opportunity to adventure in the forest and mountains. But in recent years, he developed a sense of guilt about how he’s engaged with the nature that he loves. It's time for us to begin to look for new ways to adventure that don’t contribute as many emissions. What is the reality of traveling sustainably, and is it realistic for everyone?

P.S, We're looking for more info on what you like and dislike about the podcast, and how you found us! If you have one minute today, please fill out this quick question survey for us!

01 Apr 2020S2 Ep43: Extreme Travel: Is Travel to Conflict Zones Okay?00:52:28
In November 2019, The Guardian published a headline reading,“Concerns over rise in dark tourism in Syria as war enters ninth year.” The piece argued that there’s been a rise of western tourists heading to Syria, and that they’ve been met with criticism from locals. Tourists headed to Saudi Arabia and to Afghanistan have been met with similar criticism.

After our chat with Andrew Drury about extreme travel last year, he encouraged us to reach out to James Willcox, co-founder of Untamed Borders - so we did. Untamed Borders is an adventure travel company that guides tourists into regions that are difficult to access, including Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

So what does it mean to travel to regions that aren’t easily accessible because of conflict, or geopolitics? Is this “dark tourism"?
Are there benefits to this kind of tourism?

James Willcox, co-founder of the adventure travel company Untamed Borders.

29 Mar 2020A Quick Update!00:02:04
We wanted to quickly check in with you and let you know how things are going during these wild times - what's happening with production, and what you can expect in the future.

We'll give you a mental picture though of our current states in the meantime:
Erin has been binge watching Trailer Park Boys and going up and down her staircase every day for "excercise". She's been snuggling her cats 24/7 and is now realizing the value of animal therapy. She's wondering if now's the right time to adopt another cat?

Kattie has been googling "top sweatpants", anticipating her next meal and still making podcasts, but from home. She hasn't been able to bring herself to do any excersise despite the encouragement all over social media and the flexible schedule, so please reach out to her to make sure she hasn't officially become a couch.

15 Apr 2020S2 Ep44: No, Where Are You REALLY From?00:52:16
For most of us, “where we are from” in the geographical sense, is a big part of our identity. So how does a relationship to homeland impact “travel”?

Travel Blogger, Lily Wunders, joins us in this episode to tackle this complex theme of identity and belonging as an American Born Chinese (ABC) woman living in Hong Kong. She shares what it feels like to travel to a place that feels both familiar and foreign at the same time, and to try to reclaim a language that you’ve lost.

Guest: Lily Wunders, Travel Blogger and writer at www.lilywunders.com

"This blog is so many things all at once: a love letter to my family, an ode to my lifelong devotion to food, a chronicle of a photography student’s journey, an intensely personal diary – and a total labor of love.

I write about Asian diasporic identity, living in Hong Kong, and about my adventures while traipsing around the world. Stick around – you won’t regret it!"

13 May 2020S2 Ep46: The Black Travel Movement00:45:58
The travel community and industry is overwhelmingly white. It’s about time we talk about this, so we are chatting with black travel consultant, Martinique Lewis. Her work strives to change the existing narratives of travel by advocating for travelers that represent different demographics across multiple platforms. What is the Black Travel Movement? How important is representation in travel media? We break it down.

Guest: Martinique Lewis, Black Travel Consultant and Digital Disrupter at https://www.martysandiego.com/

"With factors like the Black travel movement and millennial travelers driving the industry it can only change for the better! Although numbers don't lie, travel brands and tourism boards still haven't caught the wave of diversity and it's immensely frustrating! Tired of not seeing ourselves reflected when we look at ads and promotions knowing our travel dollars matter makes us take action and affect change!"

27 May 2020What Is It Like to Travel Blind?00:50:50
Traveling blind means adapting and experiencing travel through touch, sound, smell, and human support. Erin chats with Sassy Wyatt from Blind Girl Adventures about what it is like to live with blindness, at home and while traveling. She explains the stereotypes that blind people face, and the ways that we can all do better in accommodating blind people at work, in public, and in tourism.

We’re diving into an important conversation around travel accessibility, stigmas around blindness, and we’ll learn about how able-bodied folks can help address ableism. Tune in to discover why you don't have to have sight to have vision.

We are some of the many podcasters who are uniting to condemn the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and many many others at the hands of police.

This is a continuation of the systemic racism pervasive in the United States, and Canada since their inceptions. We are committed to standing against racism in all its forms.

We believe that to be silent is to be complicit.

We believe that Black lives matter.

We believe that Black lives are more important than property.

We believe that we have a responsibility to use our platforms to speak out against this injustice whenever and wherever we are witness to it.

24 Jun 2020S2 Ep48: Cultural Appropriation: At Home and Abroad00:55:20
How do you know if something you’re doing, or wearing, is cultural appropriation? What is cultural appropriation? And is it bad? These seem like questions that would have straight-forward answers. But they don’t.

That’s because cultural appropriation is full of nuance, and it’s this nuance that we’re unpacking. In this episode, we're joined by Melissa Chan, discussing the history of C.A., its points of contention in pop culture, and how it comes up during travel.

What should we, as travelers, keep in mind to avoid participating in cultural appropriation?

08 Jul 2020S2 Ep49: Budget Travel 101: The Good, The Bad, The Balance00:50:49
Do you consider yourself to be a budget traveler? There’s an entire industry built around the idea of budget travel, and I get why - travel is expensive. In this episode, we're joined by Kate McCully and Danielle Desir in discussing all things budget travel.

How does mooching happen?
How can we travel cheaply and also give back to the communities we visit?
How can you make saving for travel realistic?

We discuss how budget travel is done, but also, what happens when budget travel goes too far. Because, spoiler alert, budget travel can sometimes do damage, but rest assured there are ways to get it right!

22 Jul 2020S2 Ep50: How Travel Influencing Works00:48:47
In the old days, around the year 2014, a "travel influencer" was usually a blogger, who earned a decent amount of hits on their website, and some social media followers. But since then, travel influencing has changed alot, and now, there are more travel influencers than ever before.

So what goes into being a "travel influencer", and why does the concept sometimes leave a sour taste in our mouths? Eulanda and Omo of Hey! Dip Your Toes In join Erin to discuss all the little details that go into creating a succesful brand and, their relationship with social media and travel after becoming influencers.

10 Sep 2020S3: Curious Tourism: Season 3 Trailer00:04:11
Back in March this year, Coronavirus halted travel as we know it. And while we might not be able to actually get out there and see the world, we can dream, we can reminisce, and well, we can talk about it!

Don’t worry -  this season of Curious Tourism won’t be all about Coronavirus, I promise.

What it will be about is the intersections of travel and identity and privilege. This season will explore the impact that travel has on our lives, and the communities we interact with as tourists.

I’m back, along with my producer Kattie, to dive deep into the world of responsible travel and tourism. How can we do it right and how we can make tourism more accessible for everyone.

Join me every other Wednesday starting October 7th for a new season of Curious Tourism (formerly known as Alpaca My Bags), as I tackle these questions and so many more. We’ll  learn about how we can be better travelers, and create a travel industry that is more equitable in representation.

Part of the pressures that women feel to have a “beach body”, especially during their travels, are due to a problematic standard of thin-ness - but also because of many stereotypes.

In this episode, Erin chats with the women behind the travel community, "Fat Girls Travel, Too!", who's goal is to empower plus-size women to explore the world, and crush stereotypes.

04 Nov 2020S3 Ep54: Exploring the Complexities of Adventure Travel 00:39:33
What do you consider to be an "adventure"?

In this episode we’re chatting with an incredible adventurer Mario Rigby who completed a two year long trek across the continent of Africa and more recently spent a month kayaking the full length of Lake Ontario... alone.

Mario’s adventuring involves tons of logistical planning, and training - both physical, and mental, and he takes on adventures and challenges that frankly, not everyone can pull off. But that doesn’t mean that not everyone can experience adventures.

So how can we adventure in a way that is right for us, and in a way that's sustainable and responsible?

Voluntourism, missionary work, and other forms of aid often carry colonial and racist undertones. Is there a way to volunteer time while traveling, that is ethical? Is the aid sector entirely bad?

Claire Travers joins us on the podcast to discuss. She has worked in humanitarian aid for the past 8 years, on deployment around South East Asia, Sub Saharan Africa and West Africa in response to natural disasters. She specialises in assessing the impact of aid projects.

13 Jan 2021S3 Ep59: LGBTQ+ Travel: Traveling as a Queer Couple00:47:08
The way that we travel and experience the world is in part shaped by our identities. Our experiences can be impacted by our ethnic, racial, gender, and sexual identities. And today, we’re learning what it’s like to travel as a LGBTQ+ couple.

Traveling as a queer couple can bring up a lot of questions, like:
Is the queer community safe where we want to travel?
Should we hold hands?
What countries are "gay-friendly" and which are just giving lip service?

In this episode, we discuss LGBTQ+ travel from the perspective of Alex and Chris - aka Burrito and Tortilla. We discuss safety concerns, misgendering, advocating for yourself, understanding your privilege as a queer traveler, and what resources are available to the traveling LGBTQ+ community!

10 Mar 2021S3 Ep63: COVID-19: Is it Safe to Travel Yet?01:00:55
It's been one full year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. To mark this anniversary, we brought Emily Scott, registered nurse, science educator, and travel blogger, back on Alpaca My Bags to discuss the COVID-19 measures, vaccines, and the future of travel.

For Emily, this was the year that she stopped traveling. Instead, she found herself treating the first COVID-19 patient in the USA, and many afterward. She explains what the coronavirus vaccines mean for the future of this pandemic and for travelers, whether it’s ok to travel internationally yet, how to travel safely right now, and her thoughts on the future of travel. Plus, we touch on some common questions about the vaccines!

24 Mar 2021S3 Ep64: Unpacking Travel Privilege in South East Asia00:43:27
South East Asia is extremely popular amongst backpackers, typically because it doesn’t cost much to get there, there is plenty of tourism infrastructure, there are lots of opportunities to party, and most of all - you can travel there on a small budget.

But there are tons of stories of tourists being arrested or deported for disrespectful behaviour, or even breaking laws. In this episode, Saphire and Crystal from the podcast Eff It, Go Travel join us to explore how and why this happens - and, spoiler alert - much of it has to with white, and western privilege.

07 Apr 2021S3 Ep65: "Nothing Prepares You For India" 00:50:42
The idea of India being tough for Western travelers to prepare for is a common narrative. It's known as a place where most travelers will face culture shock.
In this episode of Alpaca My Bags, we're exploring these perceptions with one of our listeners, Anuj!

We discuss the stereotyped perceptions of India that are held by foreigners, and we explore the diversity of India - from it's languages to it's food and culture. Plus, we dig into the legacy of colonialism in India, class differences, and the ethics of slum tours.

21 Apr 2021S3 Ep66: Travel on the Spectrum00:58:24
Traveling often means changes in our routines, unpredictable moments, new sights, new languages, and new sounds. While all of us are likely familiar with these challenges on some level, for autistic people, they can be especially tough.

In this episode, we’re exploring how the Autism spectrum impacts travel. We're joined by Jenni, a California based photographer who was formally diagnosed with Autism in adulthood, and Nicole, who owns a travel agency that specializes in travel for neurodiverse people.

PSA: You'll notice that in parts of this episode person-first language is used. Jenni explained that she, and many others in the autistic community, feel that identify-first language is more inclusive. Please listen critically. Being able to identify person-first language is super important if we’re going to get better at correcting it.

05 May 2021S3 Ep67: How Travel Can Help to Heal Grief00:46:10
Grief is something that all of us will experience in life. Erin, host of Alpaca My Bags, has experienced grief several times in her life. Two of those times, the loss happened right before she was meant to travel. And somehow, traveling really helped her to heal.

In this episode we're joined by Andrew Steven, the host of the new podcast Trail Weight. The show chronicles Andrew’s adventure of self-discovery as he hiked the John Muir Trail while grappling with the death of his mom. We discuss how travel impacts the experience of grief, travel guilt, and how immersing yourself in nature and new experiences can support your mental health.

15 Sep 2021Curious Tourism: Season 4 Trailer00:02:51
It’s been feeling like the travel industry is slowly but surely coming back to life. But we can’t help but feel a little cynical about this return to travel.

The pandemic is still raging around the world, we're facing the growing consequences of a climate crisis, and we're continuing to grapple with inequity in our communities. It seems more important than ever to make sure that when we travel, we do it right.

So where do we start? On this season of the podcast, I’m digging even deeper into what it really means to be a responsible traveler. With the help of my producer Kattie, we’ll chat with thought leaders, activists, and passionate travelers -  exploring questions like:

  • How important is it to decenter yourself as a traveller?
  • How will climate change impact tourism, and travel as we know it?
  • And, is the era of Space Tourism here? And if so, is that something we even need?
I am itching to book my next adventure, and I’m sure you are too. So, there’s no better time to be having these conversations. Throughout the season, I’ll share some of my own travel stories - and mishaps - with you. And along the way, we’ll all learn how we can return to travel in a way that’s better for us, and for the planet.

06 Oct 2021S4 Ep71: How to De-Center Yourself in Travel00:58:25
The decisions we make as travelers impact more than just us. Our travels impact the communities we visit, in different ways, from economic, to even political. And nowadays, health is a major factor, too.

Erin is joined by JoAnna Haugen, a solutions-oriented writer, editor, and public speaker who works at the intersection of sustainable travel, environmental conservation, and community-based advocacy efforts. We discuss what it means to de-center ourselves as travelers, the role of the travel industry in doing so, consequences of a traveler-focused mindset and how to get the "casual traveler" to care about responsible travel.

20 Oct 2021S4 Ep72: Is Conservation Tourism Responsible?00:49:07
There are just two northern white rhinos left in the world. Staggering rates of illegal hunting for its horn have led to its (almost certain) extinction in the wild.

The rise of conservation tourism, or, safaris, is one way that tourists can support species that are going extinct. But how effective is conservation tourism?

James Mwenda joins the podcast to tell us about conservation and our role as tourists in protecting endangered species and our planet. James was a caretaker for the last northern white rhinos at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and now he has started his own expedition company, Jemu Expeditions, to show travellers to Kenya what he loves most about his country.

03 Nov 2021S4 Ep73: Traveling by Vespa from Singapore to Europe00:39:36
Women are often told that they shouldn’t travel alone. We’re warned that it’s dangerous, and we need to be careful. But this doesn’t mean that women shouldn’t travel. And in fact, by traveling, women can challenge the status quo.

We chat with Juvena Huang, who wanders the world by scooter. As a young woman, she rode 44,000 kilometres across 25 countries, from Singapore to Europe, on her trusty Vespa. Juvena joins us to share stories from her travels, what it's like to travel by scooter, and her thoughts on women traveling solo.

17 Nov 2021S4 Ep74: Is India Syndrome Real? 00:47:55
When Westerners travel to India, they occasionally experience culture shock that can feel overwhelming. In some cases, the experience of being immersed in a new place becomes too much. “India Syndrome,” a psychosis said to effect Westerners seeking spiritual enlightenment in India, has been cited as the cause behind the disappearance and deaths of travellers in India... but is "India Syndrome" real?

We unpack "India syndrome" with Caroline Slaughter. Caroline is a filmmaker and podcaster, and her recent podcast Astray investigates the phenomenon of India syndrome in depth.

26 Jan 2022S4 Ep78: Back in Time to the Hippie Trail 00:40:21
In the 1960s and 1970s young people from the UK, Europe, America and elsewhere, hopped on bus services or into their own converted vehicles, to travel from Europe to South Asia. This epic overland trip often lasted from several weeks to several months long. Along the overland route, travelers would gather in popular spots like Istanbul, Kathmandu, and Goa. In those days, the route was known as the “overland trail.” But today, many know it as the Hippie Trail.

Today, we're exploring the history of the Hippie Trail. We discuss the rise of this popular overland route, whether it really was all "hippie" travelers, and, we talk with two people who were on the trail themselves: Kathryn (Katie) Lang Slattery and John de Figueiredo.

09 Feb 2022S4 Ep79: Why Climate Change is Changing Tourism01:03:16
In 2021, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report that outlined how climate change is now widespread, rapid, and intensifying. So at this point, is travel is an unnecessary privilege that is worsening our climate situation?
Or, is there a way to strike a balance between travel and sustainability?
Erin is joined by Dr. Daniel Scott to unpack these difficult questions.

Dr. Daniel Scott, University Research Chair in Climate and Society in the Geography and Environmental Management as well as the Director of the Interdisciplinary Center on Climate Change at the University of Waterloo (Canada).

31 Aug 2022S5 Ep81: Is the Era of Space Tourism Here?00:57:15
In 2021, the internet reacted as the world’s wealthiest men blew millions of dollars to spend just a few minutes traveling to the edge of space. Right now, space tourism is for the rich and famous, but in the coming years, it may become more accessible to regular travelers.

We chat with space tourism journalist Valerie Stimac about what it's like to travel to space, the future of the space tourism industry, equity and representation in space, sustainability concerns, how much space travel will cost, and how to enjoy space from earth.

GUEST:
Valerie Stimac has lived across the globe but spent her formative years in Alaska admiring the northern lights each winter. After living in cities including Seattle, London, and the San Francisco Bay Area, Valerie re-discovered a childhood passion for space and combined it with her professional career as a travel writer. 14 Sep 2022S5 Ep82: The Truth About Digital Nomad Life00:59:14
Digital nomads are on the rise, as more and more people embrace working remotely as a way to make seeing the world more accessible.

According to data from MBO Partners, in 2019 there were 7.3 million Americans who identified as digital nomads. But in 2021, the number of American digital nomads surged up to 15.5 million.

We're talking about all things digital nomadism with travel couple and writers, Michael Jensen and Brent Hartinger. They have been digital nomads for years, and write the fantastic newsletter called Brent and Michael are Going Places.

We explore what the growing embrace of digital nomadism means for responsible tourism. We highlight the benefits of this travel style, and the potential negative impacts, too.

GUESTS:
Brent and Michael are a gay couple who decided in 2017 to sell their house in Seattle and travel the world as “digital nomads.” That means they move to a new country every few months, supporting ourselves by working remotely.
