26 Mar 2019 | 336 - Sundance Revisited: Maiden | 00:17:27
We're taking you back to Sundance where we were so honored to speak with the crew and main subject of the documentary, Maiden. In 1989, Tracy Edwards formed the first all-women yacht sailing crew to sail one of the toughest races in the world- the Whitbread Round the World Race. We discuss the prejudice and chauvinism she faced, and how she accidentally became a symbol of feminism. We're so happy we get to highlight another badass woman for Women's History Month. 02 Feb 2018 | 249 - Pearls of Wisdom with Nancy | 00:56:14
San Francisco is a small city. 7 miles by 7 miles. So what are the odds that Captain Party and Erin would meet the same woman, in different situations, six years apart? The same woman who would give life lessons to both gals in transitioning times in their lives. I guess the odds were good but don't tell us at Bitch Talk it's also not part of some cosmic juju. In this episode we talk to Nancy (she wants to remain somewhat anonymous) who's lived in SF since the summer of love, worked with the Black Panthers, has traveled around the world, and says that kegels are very important. Enjoy episode 249 of the podcast and remember to talk with strangers....you never know who'll you'll meet! #listensharerepeat #bitchplease

21 Oct 2020 | 500th Episode Basic Bitch with Comedy Duo FRANGELA! | 00:51:35
Welcome to our 500th episode! We're thrilled to celebrate the occasion with Frances Callier and Angela V. Shelton, aka comedy duo FRANGELA. We get into the unsettling events of this year, the upcoming election, and our theories on the future of our country. We were dealing with heavy topics, but these ladies have a way of channeling our anger and anxiety into laughter, something we all can use a little more of these days. They're smart, thoughtful, unforgiving in their beliefs, and above all, best friends. For Bitch Talk, this interview was a match made in heaven. Seven years ago, we never could have imagined we'd find ourselves here, and we thank you (as always) for listening. Don't forget we're celebrating virtually tonight (10/21) at 8pm PDT with some of our favorite past guests! We're bringing you music, dance, and a special "Friends versus Friends" game with FRANGELA to see which set of friends knows each other best. It's donation based, and a portion of the proceeds will go towards the ACLU. You won't want to miss this! 17 Mar 2022 | SXSW 2022 - Pussy Mask, Really Good Rejects, and Horse Brothers | 00:42:11
Our first episode of the SXSW Film Festival features all return guests to the show! We love seeing familiar faces, and it's especially impressive that these filmmakers are all regulars on the film festival circuit. Pussy Mask is a music video for Peaches' new song (of the same name), directed by Leah Shore, who we had on at last year's SXSW for her short film Puss. We're sensing a trend in the titles of her projects...anyway, this is an animated music video that features dancing vaginas (of varying colors) wearing masks. It's glorious. And Leah shares how she first met Peaches, some of her favorite Peaches lyrics, and her plans for (hopefully) catching some strange while in Austin, Texas during the festival. Really Good Rejects is a documentary centered around Reuben Cox, who makes some of the most unique and sought after guitars for some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Jackson Browne, Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney) and Aaron Dessner (of The National). Director Alice Gu (who we had on last year for her documentary The Donut King), shares how she got connected with Reuben Cox, which musicians she was most excited about interviewing, and the unexpected vulnerability they shared with her. Horse Brothers is a short film co-directed and co-written by Fabian Velasco and Milos Mitrovic (who also stars in the film), both of which we had on at Slamdance 20 Thanks for listening and for your support! 25 Jul 2018 | 291 - Generation Wealth Director Lauren Greenfield | 00:30:00
For more than 25 years, director and photographer Lauren Greenfield has studied what wealth means to people in the U.S. through her lens. In her latest documentary, Generation Wealth, Laura captured the wealth of people like the Kardashians way back to when they weren't a commodity, just teens growing up in a wealthy bubble. It's a study in the affluence of the '90s to what has become the excessive riches of today. Let's get into it with our new friend of the podcast, Lauren Greenfield, and talk Generation Wealth. 09 Dec 2022 | Flashback Bonus: Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down | 00:20:22
Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! This week, we are flashing back to EP686, when we brought back a couple of our favorite filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West, as they discuss their latest documentary Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down . The film recently premiered on CNN, and can be found on demand on various cable channels and the CNN apps. Original Show Notes NotesIt's our fourth time speaking with a couple of our favorite documentarians (RBG, My Name is Pauli Murray, Julia) - Julie Cohen and Betsy West about they're latest film, Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down which does not disappoint. Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the face in 2011 at an in-person constituent event in a supermarket parking lot. She was severely injured and, at first, it was reported that she died from her injuries. The film Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down takes you on a journey of Gabby's life from her humble beginnings, through her incredibly painful and heartbreaking recovery (shout out to her husband, former astronaut, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for being the ultimate caregiver!) to her fighting for stricter gun laws through her non-profit Giffords. We spoke with Julie and Betsy about this incredibly timely film and about how they were able to land (spoiler!) President Barack Obama, Gabby Giffords gift of music knowledge, a special surprise that was found in the Kelly/Giffords freezer, how important music therapy was for Gabby's recovery, and so much more. A big thank you to Julie and Betsy for loving what we do and always saying yes to having a conversation with us. <3 Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down will be in theaters this Friday, July 15. 06 Jul 2020 | Directors Cristina Costantini & Kareem Tabsch from Mucho Mucho Amor | 00:14:55
Erin and fellow Festival Daily Buzz co-host John Wildman speak with Mucho Mucho Amor directors Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch. Back at this years Sundance Film Festival we got to speak with the directors of the Netflix film Mucho Mucho Amor which documents the life of legendary psychic Walter Mercado. Erin and fellow Festival Daily Buzz co-host John Wildman were delighted to talk with Cristina and Kareem about their love for Walter, the humor that permeates throughout the documentary, and how Walter loved everyone including himself. This film is a gem and we're so happy it's been given a large platform for a broader audience to see. It's week 5 of shelter-in-place, and there's a lot going on! We recorded this right after our interview with Daveed Diggs which comes out May 15th (spoiler alert: HE'S THE BEST). We discuss behind the scenes info on our interview with Daveed, the concept of time during a pandemic, the fun of driving on an empty highway (who knew a Prius can go 90mph?), and biological warfare. 25 Aug 2021 | The First Step with Brandon and Lance Kramer | 00:14:55
This is our first year covering the Bentonville Film Festival, and we're excited to bring you this conversation with filmmakers/brothers Brandon and Lance Kramer, of the documentary The First Step. This film follows tv host/author/political commentator Van Jones as he attempts to pass a criminal justice bill under the Trump administration. They discuss their connection to Van Jones, the divisive nature of politics, and the difficulties of gaining access to interviews in the White House. In a country where we like to label people as villains or heroes, this film shows how real life is not that simple. If you live in California, don't forget to vote NO ON THE RECALL of Governor Newsom! This is a Republican power play that will end up costing us millions of dollars. 08 Dec 2021 | San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin | 00:27:00
Over here at Bitch Talk, we were very happy to welcome San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin onto the podcast. If you're not familiar with him, here's the basics. In 2019, Chesa Boudin ran for the open seat of District Attorney of SF and won by a narrow margin. Chesa ran on a progressive platform talking about the elimination of cash bail, ending mass incarceration, and eliminating racial bias in the criminal justice system. While he was running for office as well as after he won, his very vocal (and heavily funded) opponents have turned to not one, but two recall attempts (the first failed to get enough signatures) to remove him from office for purely political reasons. In our opinion, he's been scapegoated on topics such as car break-ins, theft, and the increase in San Francisco's unhoused population. Hello! Remember that little ol' global pandemic that we all are living through? Anyway, if this recall succeeds, San Francisco Mayor London Breed would appoint a replacement DA. Does that seem like a democratic process? In this interview, we get to know who Chesa is and where he's from, what the District Attorney's job is and what it isn't, why SF crime stats don't lie (violent crimes are down, btw), his office's achievements, and what he looks forward to. We are thankful for the time Chesa had for us and we hope to have him back again closer to the recall election in June. Read up folks, there's a lot of dark money out there wanting to take away our voting power, even in San Francisco. Need more info about the recall? Here ya go: https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/the-dangerous-joke-of-the-chesa-boudin-recall/ https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-inquiry/the-trial-of-chesa-boudin https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/Here-s-what-the-people-behind-the-Chesa-Boudin-16616934.php https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/10/us/san-francisco-recall-chesa-boudin.html Thanks for listening and for your support! 28 Sep 2022 | 700th Episode Featuring Billy Eichner & Luke Macfarlane of Bros | 00:43:18
You are landing on our 700th episode y'all. Did you read that.....700 EPISODES. So, of course we brought fire - writer, comedian, actor Billy Eichner and actor Luke Macfarlane talking about their film Bros. We were lucky to be able to watch the U.S. premiere of the film a few weeks back at the beautiful Castro Theater in San Francisco and it was an experience. The movie is so good! Lots of laugh out loud moments (so many we missed some of the dialogue), sweet and loving moments, and some HOT love scenes cause they could. We had an absolute great time talking with Luke and Billy and we hope that after you listen to our convo, you'll head out this weekend and see Bros. It's such a triumphant first major studio LGBTQ rom-com (lead by an LGBTQ cast) and yeah, you can take your teens, parents, family, and friends to see it because it's that accessible. Plus there are some fantastic cameos in Bros - you will hoot and holler when you see them. On a personal note, we are so proud to hit this major milestone of our podcast and to have folks like Billy and Luke featured on this show. We want to thank you for listening, following, commenting, rating and reviewing us. If you haven't followed us on socials or written a review or rated us, we want to ask you to do that after you listen to this episode. 09 Feb 2022 | Sundance 2022 - Sirens, Midwives, and Long Line of Ladies | 00:49:46
Welcome to our "women are badass" episode from Sundance 2022! We've compiled a group of films that highlight the strength, resilience, and power that it takes to be a woman. In Sirens, we follow the rocky rise of Slave to Sirens, the Middle East's first all female thrash metal band. Director Rita Baghdadi explains how she fell in love with the band, and how she managed to complete the film despite the difficulties of filming abroad, including how she was saved from the Beirut explosion in 2020. The documentary Midwives introduces us to Hla, a Buddhist midwife, and her apprentice Nyo Nyo, a Muslim, who together run a clinic in the very divided Rhakine State in Myanmar. Director Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing and producer Mila Aung-Thwin describe how they were able to film during an ongoing Civil War, police checkpoints, and the unexpected changes in their main character's lives. With the documentary short Long Line of Ladies, we are introduced to the Ihuk ceremony, celebrated by the Karuk tribe after a young girl receives her first period. Directors Rayka Zehtabchi and Shaandiin Tome discuss the importance of being respectful during filming, the men's role in the ceremony, and why they chose to focus on the preparation, instead of the ceremony itself. 23 Mar 2022 | SXSW 2022 - Bad Axe, Mama Bears, and Not Even For A Moment Do Things Stand Still | 00:48:16
Welcome to day 4 of our SXSW Film Festival coverage! We're excited to bring you a group of beautifully made, deeply impactful documentaries, and equally satisfying conversations. Bad Axe is a documentary shot in 2020 as an Asian-American family struggles to keep their restaurant alive in the midst of a pandemic, Neo-Nazis, and Trump's rural America. Director David Siev explains the complications of switching between being a member of the family versus the director of this film, and how this project taught him more about his family- especially his father- than he ever could have imagined. In the documentary Mama Bears, we're introduced to a group of evangelical Christians (aka Mama Bears) that love and support their LGBTQ+ children despite the the risk of losing friends, family, and their faith communities. Director Daresha Kyi and participant Tammi Terrell Morris explain power in community, one's ability to transform and grow, and the importance in showing an African American family in this film. The short documentary film Not Even For A Moment Do Things Stand Still highlights an art installation by Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, where she memorializes every American death from Covid-19 by planting a white flag in the National Mall. Shot in September of 2021, we get an intimate glimpse as family members and loved ones visit the site, and deal with mourning and closure in the midst of an unfolding tragedy. By the end of the installation's two week run, she had planted 701,133 flags. Director Jamie Meltzer and artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg describe how the film so beautifully captures the essence of Suzanne's vision, what it was like to film families during their most intimate moments of grief, and the importance of seeing the monumental scope of Covid-19 but still recognizing the personal significance in every life it's effected. 04 Nov 2020 | Sundance Rewind with Cast and Crew from Charm City Kings | 00:17:22
We hope you're all hanging in there. We are trying to stay hopeful and patient in the wake of the election, but if you'd like an escape from the anxiety, we suggest checking out Charm City Kings, streaming now on HBO Max. Not only is it co-written by one of our favorite past guests, Barry Jenkins, but it's an entertaining film that will bring you all the feels. It was a packed house as Ange sat down with Director Angel Manuel Soto, Producer Caleeb Pinkett, and the film's three young stars Jahi Di'Allo Winston, Donielle T. Hansley Jr., and Kezii Curtis. They discuss the struggle of disenfranchised communities, toxic masculinity, and the culture behind the motorbike community. We also get into the universality of this film- the story may be based in Baltimore, but there's a Baltimore in every state. Finally, they discuss our need for mentors, and how the people you choose to look up to can define the direction of your future. 25 Mar 2020 | Sundance Rewind with Actress Amy Ryan and Director Liz Garbus from the Netlix film Lost Girls | 00:19:27
We're taking you back to Sundance, where we interviewed director Liz Garbus and star Amy Ryan of the film Lost Girls. The film is based on the true story of a desperate mother searching for her missing daughter, which eventually leads the police to the unsolved cases of murdered sex workers. We discuss these real life cases (which are STILL unsolved to this day) and what it means to be a bad bitch. This is an important story, beautifully told, streaming now on Netflix! We'd just like to mention that Amy Ryan is a national treasure, and despite the urge, there was no mention of The Office, or Holly Flax. 11 Feb 2021 | Sundance 2021: The Best of the Bay! | 00:55:32
We're here at Sundance 2021 (virtually) joined by our honorary Bitch and Sundance partner-in-crime John Wildman ofFilmsGoneWild.com. In this episode, we're proud to bring you filmmakers and stories exclusively from the Bay! We're joined with the cast and crew from the films Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir, Homeroom, and Marvelous and the Black Hole. Producer Cassandra Jabola from Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir, discusses the cultural impact of Amy Tan, and the importance of representation in media. Homeroom follows the class of 2020 at Oakland High School as they work to make a change in the school to prison pipeline, and react to a global pandemic. We were honored to chat with one of the doc's main subjects, Denilson Garibo, about activism, persistence, and where we go from here. In Marvelous and the Black Hole, we were joined by director Kate Tsang, and the stars Miya Cech, and the one and only Rhea Perlman. We discuss the Bay vibes throughout the film, channeling your inner badass, becoming a magician, and the significance of stealing toilet paper. We love the Bay, and we LOVE these films! Thank you to Sundance for bringing these voices to light, and don't forget to support your local filmmakers! 17 Jun 2022 | Frameline Film Festival - Directors Bill Horner + Stacey Woelfel and featured subjects Pam Ling + Judd Winick of the documentary Keep the Cameras Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way | 00:17:21
It's a pivotal moment in Bitch Talk herstory. We were able to "sit down" with Real World San Francisco cast members (and storytellers) Pam Ling and Judd Winick as well as directors Stacey Woefel and Bill Horner from the documentary Keep the Cameras Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way. All of us at Bitch Talk were teenagers when this season of The Real World came out and it was a game changer. We were all affected by this season and knew deep down it was different. And, during San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival, you can see how an activist named Pedro Zamora changed the conversation about being a person who was living with HIV and then subsequently dies of AIDS. We spoke with Stacey, Bill, Pam, and Judd about why this film is coming out now, what they may have learned about Pedro that they didn't know while the doc was being made, landing a sit-down interview with President Bill Clinton, what it was like to know Pedro as a friend, how Pedro's family feels about the film, and so much more. It was and is an honor to have all of these folks on our show and to be able to talk about Pedro was healing. His presence was felt during this interview and we're moved to keep his memory and activism going -- even if it's just a small part. We walked away from the interview knowing we need more Pedros in this world. -- -- Follow Keep the Cameras Rolling on IG , Twitter , Facebook, and their website Follow Stacey Woelfel on IG, Twitter, and Facebook Follow Bill Horner on IG and Thanks for listening and for your support! 05 Aug 2022 | Easter Sunday Screenwriter Ken Cheng | 00:32:40
Howdy Bitch Talkers! We've got a fun conversation just in time for the release of the movie Easter Sunday starring comedian Jo Koy! Bay Area raised screenwriter Ken Cheng joined us on the podcast to talk about how Easter Sunday came together. It was one of those stories that could only happen in Hollywood but that was pushed by the need to have AAPI, particularly Filipino representation on the big screen. Ken talks about why Daly City had to be the backdrop of this story, his Steven Spielberg moment, what the must have's were to make this movie, and what's up with Santo Nino's anyway? As an added bonus, we've got Producer Char chiming in on the conversation talking about her experience at the Sacramento screening of Easter Sunday with us. 08 Sep 2021 | Our First Date with Joel McHale | 00:38:25
We've been fans of Joel McHale since way back in The Soup days, and this interview is a result of the connecting of the minds via Instagram (we've finally found a purpose for social media). This conversation ranges from how he entered this world (it had something to do with sperm and Rome), to the impact of him earning a Masters degree (or lack thereof). 04 Mar 2022 | SF IndieFest - Sammy & Quinn and Love Letter Templates | 00:32:25
Welcome to SF IndieFest! We’re happy to participate in this festival that celebrates stories told by people from the Bay, and shot in the Bay. We covered two films, one short, and one feature, that share an intimate look at two different sides of city life. In the short film Sammy & Quinn, we follow Sammy as he tries to convince his older brother, Quinn, who has been missing for five years and is suffering from mental illness, to join the family for Thanksgiving dinner. Director Christopher Coppola, and his son/actor, Bailey Coppola, discuss mental health, what it was like to film all over San Francisco during the heart of the quarantine, and the pros and cons of working with family. The narrative feature Love Letter Templates has a truly unique style that blends music, film, and animation to tell the story of loving and partying in San Francisco in the early 2000's. Director/writer/producer Joselito Sering explains how his first feature length film came to be, and the years of hard work and focus it took to get it done. Of course we have fun reminiscing about our “young” and carefree days in San Francisco, and we’re pretty sure we’ve crossed paths at a party or club on more than one occasion. 29 May 2020 | Quarantine Catch Up with Evelyn Obamos - Part 2 | 00:26:20
Welcome to part 2 of our conversation with the amazing Evelyn Obamos, Filmmaker & Creator Strategy Operations Manager at Pinterest. One of the upsides to recording from home is the potential for surprise guests! As a Bitch Talk Podcast first, Evelyn's boyfriend, Jeremiah, joins the conversation to discuss how they met at Pinterest, and what makes their relationship unique. Seriously folks, these two are made for each other, and their story is a hilarious and beautiful tale. We don't want to give anything away, but the term "risk assessment" was used multiple times at the start of their relationship. Ahh, to be young and in love... 15 Dec 2021 | Americanized with Writer/Director Erica Eng | 00:16:27
Sometimes the stars align and we interview someone we were meant to be friends with! Erica Eng was born and raised in Oakland, California, and sat down with us to talk about her short film, Americanized, a story about growing up in Oakland's hip-hop culture, playing basketball, and struggling with her Chinese-American identity. She shares what it was like to direct her real life aunt as one of the cutest characters in the film, and why it was so important to share her story. We also dive into the LA film scene versus the Oakland film scene, and our shared experiences growing up as Asian-Americans. And to cap it off, we discuss our collective love of Erykah Badu, and why her Lunar New Year Panda Express commercial made us cry. Enjoy! 22 Jul 2022 | The Boss Bitch Show Podcast Founders Rachel Green and Kirsten O'Brien | 00:44:36
Greetings bitches! We had a fuckin' blast talking with the comedy duo of the Boss Bitch Show outta New York - Rachel Green and Kirsten O'Brien. We learned so much during our convo from these two that it just proves you're never too old to learn new things! For instance, we were schooled in what slut throat is, that there are gang bang experts out there, that a tight 5 in stand-up is difficult, that the movie Showgirls is a must see, and that it's a right of passage for every New York actor to be on a Law & Order show in their career. Of course this isn't all we learned and we belly laughed throughout the entire conversation cause these gals are hilarious! Please support them in person at their comedy shows and listen to their new podcast show which just launched last week anywhere you get your podcasts! 15 May 2020 | Basic Bitch with Daveed Diggs | 00:43:12
This is our third time having Daveed Diggs on the show (first for Blindspotting, and then at an event in support of Moms 4 Housing at the Roxy theatre in SF), but our first time getting to really know him and just shoot the shit. To say this Basic Bitch was fun is the understatement of the year! He digs into his childhood, what it felt like to swim in his own pool for the first time, what it was like to meet and perform for the Obamas, why he could never work for Pixar, and the truth about his Tony Awards acceptance speech. And of course it wouldn't be a proper conversation with Daveed Diggs without discussing our collective love and affection for Oakland and the Bay Area. Aside from making us laugh, he taught us about a new cocktail that we're dubbing the "Diggs Delight". For that, we are eternally grateful. Enjoy the episode, and watch Daveed in Snowpiercer, premiering on Sunday, May 17th on TNT. Stay safe, and thank you for staying home. 12 Oct 2020 | Ramping up to 500 - Throwback to our 300th episode with W. Kamau Bell | 01:05:40
Let's head back to the summer of 2018 when we first met comedian, United Shades of America host, and Bay Area resident W. Kamau Bell. He said yes to an interview over Twitter and it was just in time for our 300th episode. It's one of our favorite interviews because after our 30 minutes was up with him, he asked us if we could go to 45 minutes. Why, yes of course we could, Mr. Bell! To celebrate our 300th we also decided to throw a brunch party at one of our favorite San Francisco businesses - Fleetwood. We had DJ Bitesize spinning our favorite songs and breakfast burritos by Chef Mandy Jay. It was a packed house with all of our friends, family, and listeners. We'll do it again one day! We sit down with director/writer Nefise Ozkal Lorentzen about why she felt compelled to share this story, some interesting challenges she had along the way, what a sexual revolution really means, and our ability to create change. 02 Apr 2021 | French Exit with Director Azazel Jacobs | 00:21:51
The first time we met director Azazel Jacobs was for his film, The Lovers, in 2017, and we bonded over our mutual love for dogs! We were excited to reconnect for his most recent film, French Exit, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges. We get into his process for building an incredible cast, working with cats, creating imaginary worlds, psychics and souls, and why making a film is a great excuse to travel to France. Azazel has created a world where the characters are just as colorful as the scenery, and we were happy to be along for the ride. French Exit is available in select theaters on April 2nd. 03 Jul 2020 | Flash Back Friday with Daveed Diggs & Rafael Casal from the film Blindspotting | 00:21:38
Flashing back to our July 2018 conversation with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal about their film Blindspotting. Thanks to the brilliant mind of our Producer Char, we're flashing back to our July 2018 conversation with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal when they were promoting their new film Blindspotting. This conversation is hella timely as we talk about police killings, trauma fatigue, and more. If you have HBO you can stream Blindspotting now. We highly suggest it. 2018 Show Notes: Oooooooooo weeeeee! The ladies of Bitch Talk had the chance to see Blindspotting a couple of months ago, and the minute it was over Erin and Ange knew they had to talk with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal immediately. The ladies had a great conversation with the East Bay natives and we truly hope this film soars at the box office. Sorry To Bother You and Blindspotting both honor the love, complexity, and complete vibe of an Oakland that is quickly turning into an unrecognizable place to all of these homegrown filmmakers. Head out to the movies this weekend and support Blindspotting´s opening weekend. It´s a big deal. -- Be well, stay safe, and thank you for wearing a mask . 29 Mar 2023 | SXSW Festival 2023 - Scotty's Vag & Vibrator Girl | 00:27:23
Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas! We're kicking off our coverage with two powerful short films, Scotty's Vag, and Vibrator Girl. Scotty's Vag explores a night of sorority hazing, and how far one girl is willing to go to fit in. Director Chaconne Martin-Berkowicz sat down with us to talk about her experience with sororities, her apprehensions with the film's title, and the difficulty of shooting a scene that involves jello wrestling. Vibrator Girl is a horror/fantasy that imagines what happens when a girl uses her vibrator compulsively to the point of no return. We were joined by screenwriter/star Zoe Mintz, and screenwriter/producer Morgan Ciot to discuss why this had to be a horror film, and the ongoing themes of femininity, body dysmorphia, and pleasure. 24 Feb 2023 | Sundance 2023 - AirHostess-737, The Family Circus, and When You Left Me On That Boulevard | 00:27:06
Welcome to Day Eleven of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Joined again by our Park City cohort & honorary bitch John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, this time we're highlighting three powerful Sundance short films that center around the family. In AirHostess-737, an air hostess struggles with the discomfort of her braces while working a flight that is also bringing her mother's dead body back to her hometown. Director Thanasis Neofotistos explains how grief is explored in his film, the process of finding an actress with braces, and how the idea for this story came to him in a dream. The Family Circus tells the story of a Vietnamese-American family that is trying to cover up a drunk driving accident. Director Andrew Fitzgerald and talent Elyse Dinh share how this film is based on actual events in Andrew's life, what it was like to work with the great Michael Ironside, and how emotional it was for Elyse to receive praise from Andrew's mother. When You Left Me On That Boulevard follows Ly and her cousins who get stoned before a Thanksgiving dinner at her aunt's house. Director and return guest Kayla Galang (who we interviewed for her short film Learning Tagalog With Kayla) and talent Kailyn Dulay get emotional when recounting similar family dinners, explain which details of a Filipino family party they had to include, and share how this short film is dedicated to Kailyn's aunt who recently passed away. 02 Feb 2024 | Slamdance 2024 - The Death Tour and Nina is an Athlete | 00:30:57
Welcome to the Slamdance Film Festival 2024! Today we're talking about two great documentaries that highlight the passion and determination that it takes to be an athlete. The Death Tour follows wrestling hopefuls in the most grueling tour in wrestling, as they cross northern Canada (in the heart of winter) in order to entertain remote indigenous communities. We sit down with Executive Producer and wrestling great Chris Jericho, and directors Sonya Ballantyne and Stephan Peterson, to discuss the deep significance of the Death Tour (as it celebrates its 50th year!), the difficult task of choosing which wrestlers to highlight, and how a certain director reacted to being mistaken for a wrestler. Nina is an Athlete follows an Israeli wheelchair badminton champion, Nina Gorodetsky, as she attempts to fulfill her dream of making it to the Paralympics, while being a full time mother who is pushing 40. Director Ravit Markus shares the pros and cons of making a film about family, how she accidentally made a nontraditional sports documentary, and the importance of being your biggest advocate as an independent filmmaker. 27 Jul 2022 | Basic Bitch - MTV's The Challenge, FX's The Bear, Studio Gatekeepers, + Hysterectomy Talk | 00:57:38
Per the usual, we went into a basic thinking we didn't have a ton to talk about but we did! Captain Party (Ange) had a serious question about a conversation she had with her doctor about having a hysterectomy and what that would mean for her body, Char and Ange talk A LOT!! about MTV's The Challenge, we finally talk about FX's The Bear (one of the best shows on TV in our honest opinion) and how, after 9 years of podcasting, we still can't get through to big movie studio gatekeepers. 06 Mar 2020 | Wendy Director Benh Zeitlin and Actress Devin France | 00:31:29
Ange, aka "Captain Party" sits down with Director/Co-Writer Benh Zeitlin and actress Devin France from the film Wendy, a re-imagining of Peter Pan like you've never seen before! This is the exciting follow up to Benh's Academy Award nominated film, Beasts of the Southern Wild. Some of the topics they hit on include Benh's casting process- comprised of kids and first time actors, the difficulties of shooting on location in the middle of a deserted island, and Devin's experience as the star of her first film. At 12 years old, Devin France is officially the youngest guest in Bitch Talk history! What she lacks in years, she makes up for in entertaining stories, and profound insight. The back and forth between Benh and Devin gives you a taste of what it must've been like on set - they're hilarious! 24 Sep 2021 | Blue Bayou Director Justin Chon | 00:15:10
We are grateful to welcome back to the show, director Justin Chon to talk about his latest film Blue Bayou. The last time we talked with Justin, was back at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 when he screened the sister/brother drama Ms. Purple. Blue Bayou takes on the conversations around immigration, adoption, police brutality, racism, facing death and interracial marriage - all set in the beautiful landscape of one of our favorite places, New Orleans. Justin and Erin talk about the heavy topics of this film as well as why he landed on using New Orleans as the backdrop to the story, adoption as a capitalistic transaction, why he prefers the Linda Ronstadt version of Blue Bayou , and more. Blue Bayou is out now in a theater near you. We hope that you will go out and support Korean American independent film and watch Justin's previous work - Gook and Ms. Purple. 22 Oct 2022 | Flashback Bonus - Descendant Documentary Director Margaret Brown | 00:17:25
Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! In this episode, along with Sundance co-hort John Wildman,we throw back to our conversation earlier this year with director Margaret Brown of the film Descendant. We were blown away by this documentary and are thrilled to see it finally make a wide release on Netflix starting today, October 21. Our original episode description is below: Descendant follows the descendants of Clotilda, the last known slave vessel illegally brought to America, before, during, and after finding the first remains of the ship. Director Margaret Brown shares not only the emotional, but also the environmental issues in historic Africatown (in Southern Alabama where this film takes place), and her own emotional journey in making this film. Descendant is the perfect pairing of the Netflix series High on the Hog as well as the Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America which we have covered on this podcast as well.

18 May 2022 | Bitch Talking with Writer/Comedian Ginny Hogan | 00:16:17
Comedian and author Ginny Hogan has written her first book I'm More Dateable Than a Plate of Refried Beans and Other Romantic Observations and we're here to give it the Bitch Talk bump. Ginny's book takes us on the ride of how silly online/modern dating has become and has some hilarious observations on how these apps could work a little better for all of us, like, wouldn't it be fun to have an away message option for your DM's? Fucking brilliant. We also chat with Ginny about her book tour, what sober sex is like (and should we give it try?), how online dating has become a job, will her book become a show, and more. Thanks to Ginny for her time and humor. She's a total treat. If you're looking for a fun summer read or as a gift you can find Ginny's book at Chronicle Books, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org (or head to your local book store and see if they have it on their shelves). 01 Sep 2021 | See You Then with Director Mari Walker | 00:17:42
We're celebrating the Bentonville Film Festival with director/writer Mari Walker of the intense and beautiful film, See You Then. Simply put, this film follows two exes who reunite ten years later after an abrupt breakup, but the topics it covers are so much more than this! We loved seeing an interesting Asian woman lead, and in depth conversations regarding trans issues. Honestly, some of the conversations in this film could have been recorded from a Bitch Talk happy hour (men, we suggest watching this film with a note pad). 01 Feb 2023 | Sundance Narrative Films - The Accidental Getaway Driver and Mamacruz | 00:29:49
Welcome to Day One of our Sundance and Slamdance Film Festival coverage! We've joined forces again with our dear friend and Honorary Bitch, John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, and we're excited to a share our interviews with two Sundance narrative films that we really loved... First we sit down with director Sing J. Lee to talk about his beautiful film The Accidental Getaway Driver (winner of the Sundance U.S. Dramatic Competition Director Award). The film follows a Vietnamese driver in Southern California as he unknowingly picks up escaped convicts and becomes their hostage. Sing shares how he was able to infuse both action and thoughtfulness with both the writing and directing of the film, and how he adapted the film that was based on a true story. Next we discuss the film Mamacruz with director Patricia Ortega. This hilarious and touching film follows a religious grandmother who accidentally stumbles across porn on the internet, and goes through a sexual awakening. Patricia shares how growing up under the sexual repression of Catholicism, as well as finding an interesting picture of her mother, led to her need to make this film. Follow director Sing J. 18 Feb 2021 | Slamdance 2021 - Bleeding Audio Director Chelsea Christer and The Matches Justin San Souci | 00:20:05
Next stop, Slamdance y'all! Our first interview during the film festival for filmmakers by filmmakers is with director Chelsea Christer and band member of The Matches, Justin San Souci. In this interview, they talk about their documentary Bleeding Audio, which follows the journey of a band out of Oakland, Ca. called The Matches. The incredible footage they have of the band as they grow up in the music industry sets the stage for the journey they take as the industry turns to digital platforms almost overnight. The toll the digital age takes on a band coupled by having bad management is an interesting true story that Chelsea captures and tells so well through the lens of the band members, their parents, and their community. This was a fun interview and this doc. makes us yearn for live music shows - which can't come fast enough - after everyone gets the vaccine of course. Thanks for listening! 08 May 2020 | Spaceship Earth's Matt Wolf, Kathleen Grey & Mark Nelson | 00:17:43
Being confined in an enclosed space with the same people and no physical contact with the outside world. Sound familiar? It's also the premise of the Hulu Documentary Spaceship Earth, which explores the controversial Biosphere 2, an experiment started in 1991 to create a self-sustaining ecosystem to both advance space exploration, and to support life in the event that the earth becomes uninhabitable. Listen as Ange and our Daily Buzz co-host John Wildman sit down with director Matt Wolf and subjects of the film Kathleen Grey and Mark Nelson. They discuss the challenge of sifting through incredible amounts of archival footage, the controversy and challenges of this experiment, and how the effects of this study are more relevant today than ever. Side note: we first found out about the Coronavirus while in Park City, Utah, for Sundance. Since then, articles have come out considering the fact that Sundance may have been the perfect storm for the spreading of the disease. We wish all those in attendance well, especially those we had the honor of meeting and interviewing. There seems to be an increasing amount of things to #BasicBitch about these days, but we're focusing a major part of this episode on our outrage over the passing of SB8 in Texas. We're excited to be joined by businesswoman, political fundraiser, activist and friend of the show Stephanie Dominguez Walton, who is planning a fundraiser called Fund the Fight to benefit Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte. The virtual event is on Wednesday, September 29th, and will feature a couple of Bitch Talk's favorite guests (Alanna Brown and Rafael Casal of Blindspotting). We get into the broad scope of help that Planned Parenthood provides, the importance of stepping up in this moment, why California needs to set the example for the rest of the country, and share our own personal stories with how Planned Parenthood has saved our lives. We urge you to stay vocal and help in any way possible! (click here for tickets to Fund The Fight!). 23 Sep 2020 | Director Merawi Gerima of the film Residue | 00:23:07
Much like its title, this is a movie that stays with you. On its surface, it's a film about a man coming home to his childhood neighborhood that he no longer recognizes. But in the context of a social uprising in support of black lives, this film is a cautionary tale. Director/producer/writer Merawi Gerima is here to make sure his community in DC not only has a voice, but does not get erased. We sit down with him to discuss why he felt a sense of urgency to tell this story, and how he hopes this film can become part of a larger conversation that leads towards real systematic change. We get into his stylistic choices, and how casting locals from the neighborhood (including his mother, filmmaker Shirikiana Aina) added authenticity to the story. We also give a shout out to Ava DuVernay's production company, Array, for opening important doors for marginalized voices to be heard. We hope you enjoy our interview, support this film, and remain part of the conversation. Residue is streaming on Netflix now! Check out Merawi's powerful Director's Intro to the film. 11 Sep 2020 | Flash Back Friday - Satan & Adam - Director Scott Balcerek and Musician Adam Gussow | 00:13:23
We're flashing back to 2018 and the 38th annual San Francisco Jewish Film Festival with the director of the documentary Satan & Adam V. Scott Balcerek and one of the subjects Adam Gussow. (If it sounds like Erin interviewed them alone, your ears are right. Captain Party and Producer Char were out there living their best lives travelling around California for a bit.) Satan and Adam is the story of an unlikely friendship, the blues, and social commentary that spans 20 years. It's a timely story that we are happy to capture and share with you. 07 Feb 2022 | Sundance 2022 - The Panola Project, Hallelujah, and Fck Em Right Back | 00:56:13
We're continuing our (virtual) Sundance 2022 coverage with the cast and crew from the short films The Panola Project, Hallelujah, and Fck Em Right Back. This is a particularly fun group of conversations that bring inspiration, heart, and the strength to say "Fuck You"! Rachael DeCruz and Jeremy S. Levine (who wrote, directed, and produced The Panola Project) share the story of local hero Dorothy Oliver, who sets out to vaccinate her small town of Panola, Alabama (pop. 350) in a state where less than half of the population is vaccinated. They discuss meeting Dorothy, how shooting this film helped them deal with the stress of the pandemic, and filling the score with music from the great Jermaine "Mainframe" Fletcher. In the film Hallelujah, we meet two siblings who are stuck with having to take care of their nephew and niece after the death of their brother. The writer/director Victor Gabriel and producer Duran Jones explain their own real life connection to the story, and finally settle the great Cornflakes debate (they're serious about their cereal). With Fck Em Right Back, we're introduced to the fabulous DDm, a queer Black Baltimore rapper who has to outsmart his horrible boss to avoid getting fired after accidentally eating an edible. We were joined by director Harris Doran, producer Doris Casap, and our star, DDm, to discuss how DDm's real life inspired the film, and why it was important to make a fun story with a greater message. 28 Oct 2020 | Sundance Flashback - Director Justin Simien and Actress Elle Lorraine of Bad Hair | 00:18:53
Bad Hair may be one of the best horror films of our time. Like, seriously. Erin got to see the film at Bitch Talk's first night at the Sundance Film Festival. It was the first public screening of the film and it was packed with folks like Lena Waithe. It was bonkers. Why is this one of our new favorite horror films?
And those are just some of the highlights from the movie. Enjoy Erin's convo. with director/writer Justin Simien and actress Elle Lorrain and head to Hulu to watch the film! 22 Sep 2023 | Basic Bitching - LIVE from Old Skool Cafe | 00:22:44
This #BasicBitch was recorded live from one of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco, the Old Skool Cafe, a youth run jazz-themed supper club. The food is delicious, the service is wonderful, the ambiance is transporting, and the live music- you'll hear for yourself. We dive into our IMAX experience watching the newly restored Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (out in theaters now! Click here for showtimes), and the pros and cons of the 415 Club at Oracle Park. Then we share out outrage over the recent article attacking Martin Short, Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher being scabs (even though they've both backtracked as of the posting of this episode #neverforget), and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher doing too much. -- Thanks for listening and for your support! 27 Jan 2021 | Erika Cohn - Belly of the Beast | 00:21:24
Erin and Ange sit down with Erika Cohn, director of the documentary Belly of the Beast, a film that follows the fight against the illegal sterilization of women in prison. While this documentary has been 10 years in the making, it all started when she became a volunteer at the Oakland based organization Justice Now, which fights to provide social justice for women in prison. We get into the back stories of film's main subjects, Kelli Dillon, and Cynthia Chandler, and the dark history of eugenics in California. This is a powerful documentary that further proves our need for MAJOR transparency in our prisons, and to rethink the money spent on a system that is completely inept. And while we're at it, when the hell will the decisions made about a woman's body be her own? The fight is not over, reparations have not been made, and the people at the helm of these atrocities (that are still happening to this day) have not yet been held accountable. We first spoke with director Sandi Tan back in 2018 when she was in town to promote her documentary Shirkers. We had a very memorable (and boozy) time with Sandi and thought, in this time of shelter-in-place, we'd take a chance and invite her back on to the show. We're taking you back to Sundance 2020 where we chatted with Michael Almereyda, director of the biographical drama, Tesla. This film chronicles the life of a young Nikola Tesla, through the eyes of Anne Morgan (the daughter of J.P. Morgan). He gets into how the screenplay evolved through the years, why now is the perfect time for this film to come out, what it was like working with powerhouse actors like Ethan Hawke, and why he chose to write it from the perspective of Anne Morgan. Not only was he hilarious, he gives a shout out to Drunk History for helping with his historical research...same. Tesla is streaming Friday, August 21st. Click here for more information. 30 Jul 2021 | Flash Back Friday - Director Melissa Haizlip of the film Mr. Soul | 00:57:06
Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 500+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners). This week we're flashing back to January of this year when we interviewed director Melissa Haizlip from the film, Mr. Soul. This documentary features her uncle, Ellis Haizlip - a queer, Black, television producer and host of the first known Black variety show called Soul! out of New York City in the 60s. We talk with Melissa in depth about the importance of the show, James Baldwin, Black culture, Lenny Kravitz, poetry, the magic of Robert Glasper, and more. The show Soul is an extremely important part of American culture and we hope that Melissa's film will spark a new interest in Ellis Haizlip and his Black culture movement. We hope you find this film as informative and revolutionary as we did! Mr. Soul is streaming right now on HBOMax! It's opening night for the 38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and we're on location at the Castro Theatre to interview Lisa D'Apolito, director of Love, Gilda. It's an intimate look at the life of Gilda Radner, one of the funniest women in comedy, and an original cast member of Saturday Night Live. Lisa discusses her access to Gilda's personal audiotapes and journal entries, and how she hopes Gilda's life will remind people that the most important thing in life is love. 08 Jul 2020 | Basic Bitching w/ Bill & Turner Ross - Directors of Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets | 00:41:06
We've been wanting Bill and Turner Ross, directors of Bloody Nose Empty Pockets, back on the show since we met them at Sundance earlier this year. It was 100% worth the wait! If you're missing your favorite watering hole, this film is the cure for you. We "dive" into what makes dive bars so special, how they came up with the title, and why they decided to open the film with the first line of the Declaration of Independence. We discuss their unique ability to make the viewer feel like part of the story, and why Hollywood was NOT the place for them. They speak openly about their documentary on the making of Ben Zeitlin's Wendy, Second Star to the Right and Straight on 'Til Morning, and why the studio rejected it (If you're interested in watching it, you can send them a DM and they'll share the link with you!). As residents of one of our favorite places in the world, New Orleans, they get into the current vibe of the city, and how they're getting through this moment. We thank them for making a film that on its surface is about a dive bar, but is really a study on how we deal with being human in difficult times. We can all relate to that right about now. CLICK HERE to stream Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets on July 8th for National Dive Bar Day (10% of all rentals will benefit US Bar Guild Foundation and their Covid-19 Bartender Emergency Relief Fund), and starting 7/10 for a virtual roll out.
