28 Aug 2023Streamy's 2023 Review: What it foreshadows about the creator space + Dillon Danis goes below the belt00:49:59

The Streamy's 2023 aired last night and featured nominees like H3 podcast, Alix Earle, Brittany Broski, Logan Paul and more. Here are my thoughts on what it foreshadows about the creator space and why I think the Streamy's will eventually hit a more prestigious level - once they have this one ingredient.

I also talk about the controversy surrounding Taylor Swift impersonator, Ashley Leechin (noitsashley13) who pulled a prank recently by pretending to be Taylor Swift and leading to a mob. Article here.

I also touch on the Dillon Danis controversy with Logan Paul. He has attempted to shame Paul's fiance, Nina Agdal, in a smear campaign ahead of their boxing match. Article here.

04 Feb 2023Netflix “Cheer” Drama: La'Darius Marshall exposes Gabi Butler & The Dark Side of the Cheer Industry00:40:02
How did a show, that was once on top of the world, crumble so fast? Netflix's hit show "Cheer" featured a competitive collegiate team out of Navarro, Texas. The cast won over millions of hearts. Jerry Harris was a rep for the "Ellen Degeneres Show" at red carpets and the cast had accumulated millions of followers online.

But did Netflix bite off more than they could chew when airing the show? And where do they go from here?

As of recently, La'Darius Marshall has called out Gabi Butler for black face and other things. And her response is a lesson in what *not* to do during a P.R. crisis. Where do they go from here? Will the lucrative "Cheer" franchise continue on Netflix or is the show officially cursed?

This is for educational purposes only! No being mean or dog-piling. When talking about the people and organizations involved in the story this week, it is all my opinions and alleged.

03 Apr 2023@JZEats: Why Selena Gomez & Paris Hilton have gotten involved with this specific niche of content creation (& why these creators are so lucrative compared to others)00:56:27

Today we sit down with a 10-year veteran creator, JZ Eats. I wanted to chat with her because she represents the one niche of creator that is one of the most lucrative niches on the internet - even the biggest celebrities, like Selena Gomez and Paris Hilton, have dipped their toes in.

And that would be food creators! Whether it is on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or Pinterest - they remain some of the highest paid and highest engaged niche out of all creator-types. We dissect why that is in this episode.

Hear her advice and story on the podcast today.

05 Jun 2023“The Idol”: Is Life Imitating Art with Lily Rose-Depp? (ft. @jasminedarya)00:52:56

“The Idol” recently premiered on HBO Max featuring Lily Rose-Depp, The Weeknd, Jennie Kim and more. It is created by Sam Levinson who also created “Euphoria” and has been hit hard by critics, at one point having 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I personally liked the first episode and I am interested to see more. Here is an article from Hollywood Reporter on Lily Rose-Depp's defense of the show.

I talk to Jasmine Darya in this episode about the intersection of celebrities and fashion. And how the use fashion as a tool to elevate their image. We compare the old money approach of Sofia Richie vs the new age, somewhat exploitative approach of Lily Rose Depp on ‘The Idol’.

15 Aug 2023Bethenny Frankel calls for reality star union and receives support from SAG-AFTRA (Marketing Expert Reacts)00:47:32

Bethenny Frankel has been speaking out against the treatment of reality stars recently and says she was inspired by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While there was some initial pushback, it seems that she is gaining momentum. SAG-AFTRA publicly expressed support to Bethenny and reality stars fight to unionize against networks like Netflix, NBC Bravo and more.

I recently talked about the treatment and exploitation of reality stars on an episode of #ShareYourScreen with Nicky Reardon. You can watch the slideshow, deep dive here. You can also listen to Share Your Screen wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

Momentum has been growing for reality stars and their fight for better treatment during and after filming. This comes after former 'Love is Blind' star, Nick Thompson, filed a lawsuit against Netflix last year and launched U.C.A.N. (Unscripted Cast Advocacy Network). There seem to be many parallels with how reality stars are treated across multiple networks - hinting at an institutional problem that needs change.

22 Mar 2023Will TikTok get banned? How it could change the social media landscape00:32:15
Hi guys, Coco Mocoe here. Today's episode is all about the potential TikTok ban in the U.S. and the different ways this scenario could play out if it comes to fruition.

For more context on the TikTok ban, read this CNBC article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tiktok-ban-whats-next-company-purchase/

Here is an up-to-date article about the TikTok CEO testifying before congress: https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/23/tech/tiktok-ceo-hearing/index.html

Some topics covered in this episode:

Why the TikTok ban might be xenophobic
Why the TikTok ban could officially mark the end of Instagram, Facebook and Meta, as well
Is history repeating itself like how Vine ended then we saw some creators jump to YouTube
What platform could replace TikTok in it's absense?
What creators will come out on top if the ban goes through? How can you best prepare and adapt?

Let me know your thoughts on the TikTok ban on my recent TikTok about the topic. My goal is to prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

10 Apr 2023Timm Chiusano: How a Marketing Exec Became TikTok's Favorite Vlogger00:57:35

Today's episode is with one of TikTok's favorite vloggers, Timm Chiusano (@timmchiusano). He has been compared to one of the greatest vloggers and storytellers of all time, Casey Neistat. We talk about his rise on the app, his background working in media and winning an Emmy while he was at ESPN, his process for creating his most viral vlogs, his thoughts on the future of influencer brand collabs and more.

My favorite thing about Timm is his ability to remain curious. So often, people think they must have a video planned out or educate in every second in order to provide value. But Timm's videos act as a reminder that sometimes people just want companionship and don't go on social media to be lectured at. Usually, that is what they are escaping by opening their phones.

13 Feb 2023"Why going viral can be a type of trauma": From true crime victims to online harassment00:44:09

On todays episode, we take on a bit of a deeper topic than the usual pop culture and marketing. We talk about the potential trauma of going viral online. From the privacy that can be lost when you are the victim of a horrendous crime to the online harassment that people face when people see your videos. It seems no one is safe.

I still believe the internet is 90% good and can change your life for the better. But I also think it is my responsibility to warn others of the down side.

Some cases that seemed to have trickled into exploitation, when it comes to the harm of true crime, are the "Idaho Four" and Gabby Petito.  At what point does overconsumption of a case no longer help in raising awareness but rather becomes re-traumatizating for anyone close to the victims?

Another extension of the harm of the internet was the New Jersey teen who committed suicide after being bullied online for a video of her getting hurt by fellow classmates. Suicides in U.S. for people aged 13-24 increased by 7% in 2021 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). How much of the internet plays a role in that?

Thank you so much for listening!

30 Mar 2023Gwyneth Paltrow: How a Ski Trial Helped Her Re-Brand as Relatable (ft. FluentlyForward)00:45:05

Gwyneth Paltrow has become the most famous "almond mom" with her brand 'Goop' and her odd eating habits. But when it seemed like tides were turning against her, she began a trial for a ski accident in Utah. The trial has made her more relatable than ever, and seemingly by "accident". For more information on the trial, you can read this BuzzFeedNews article here.

Shannon (aka FluentlyForward) and I talk about the dichotomy of Gwyneth Paltrow. What we can learn from a celebrity who doesn't try to be 'relatable' but rather leans into how out of touch she is.

We also talk about this marketing approach in relation to other trending celebrities like Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres and more. Everything is our opinions and all alleged.

Tina Fey comes back to the big screen with a “Mean Girls” musical remake based on the Broadway play. The new movie features an all-star cast like Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cavalhro, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Angouri Rice, Christopher Brinley and Bebe Wood.

Lot’s of reviews are coming in about the movie. Here are my thoughts from a media perspective and how the public’s response to this movie will shape the industry in the next few years.

Today’s episode is with media & branding expert @culturework who I found after her coverage of the Tarte F1 trip debacle that took over the FYP recently. Here is an article by Refinery29 that summarizes what happened, for extra reference.

Her insights were super valuable and I wanted to dive deeper with her to highlight the often unfair treatment of POC creators - not just by algorithms but by brands, as well.

We also discuss the ‘Horses’ restaurant drama that started in West Hollywood and took over the internet. In this, we dive into the ethics of reporting on often gory crimes and where to draw the line when discussing true crime.

Everything in this podcast is our opinion based on the public videos shared by the discussed party. Everything is alleged.

You can find more about @CultureWork via her newsletter or TikTok.

26 Jan 2023Mikayla Nogueira Accused of Wearing False Lashes in Mascara Ad: What might happen next?00:29:42

Did Mikayla Nogueira use false lashes when promoting the new L'Oreal mascara? If so, it's not looking good and the beauty community is mad.

Here is what I think she should do next from a marketing and media standpoint. What do you think?

This is for educational purposes only! No being mean or dog-piling. When talking about Mikayla Nogueira, it is all my opinions and alleged.

09 Mar 2023Vanderpump Rules: Why Tom Sandoval & Raquel Leviss' Affair Stopped The World00:32:00
Hi guys! Today's episode is about two topics that are hitting close to home.

The Vanderpump Rules cast drama with Tom Sandoval, Ariana Madix and Raquel Leviss. I wanted to play hypothetical and give my advice on the few ways that they can save their reputations, even though it would be a tough one. Plus, my perspective on why this cheating scandal rocked the world in a way that we don't even see with professional musicians, athletes, etc... There is one common denominator with Tom Sandoval and Ned Fulmer from Try Guys.

Plus, I want to talk about the stray bullets I got on TikTok recently. A few TikTokers, who I have watched and enjoyed, decided to put me and a few others down to make a point about why views are so important on TikTok. I have worked on this app for years and I know that views come in hills and valleys -- and that's okay! But what is not okay is looking at your followers like currency and putting people down to sell a course. Putting down other creators who are open enough to put their ideas out there should never be a means to an end.

As a creator, I am vulnerable enough to put my thoughts and ideas out there -- even when they aren't getting millions of views. And that is okay! We have to give our favorite creators grace to try new things, to grow and to fail in the process -- or else their viral content will be stale in 6 months.

The long-awaited Vanderpump Rules finale to season 10 (episode 15) is here. This is bigger than a super bowl. Super bowls happen once a year. This 'Scandoval' was once-in-a-lifetime! 25 Feb 2023Selena Gomez & Hailey Bieber: How the TikTok algorithm blew their feud out of proportion00:31:35

Selena Gomez deletes social media after "feud" with Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber on TikTok. When does stan culture take drama and blow it out of proportion? 05 Mar 2024"Why trends go viral": What I learned from "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell00:26:07

Today's episode of #AheadOfTheCurve with Coco Mocoe is all about what makes content or trends go viral, and most importantly become memorable, according to "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. The book was written in 2000 but I apply his brilliant concepts to how to go viral on TikTok, YouTube and more in 2024 and beyond.

In this episode, we discuss 3 of my major takeaways after reading the book:

  1. The power of repetition or "The Blues Clues Effect"

  2. The power of reverse marketing or "The Barbara Streisand Effect:

  3. The power of ritual or "The Airwalk Effect"

Let me know in the reviews what book I should read next as part of our new marketing book club! I will dedicate a new episode of this podcast anytime I finish reading an interesting book that I think you will enjoy.

Summary of Episode:

The first Super Bowl was hosted in 1967 and the average cost of a commercial was between $35.000 and $40,000 according to Sportico.

This year more than ever, the NFL had their eyes set on a female audience. This came with the addition of player’s girlfriends in the stands like Alix Earle, Taylor Swift and Hailee Seinfield. Alix Earle was even a presenter at the NFL Honors ceremony in Vegas a few days ahead of the superbowl and her boyfriend is Miami Dolphin’s wide receiver Braxton Berrios.

While in Vegas this week, there was chatter that the NFL expected this to be the most watched Super Bowl in history. Thanks to the female fans tuning in for a look at Taylor Swift. And boy was there a show! She had Blake Lively, Ice Spice and Lana Del Rey in her box and there was even betting sites that had entire bets based around how many times the camera would pan to her during the game.

There was also a 49’ers wife who made headlines, Krysten You-Sh-Check. Wife of full back Kyle You-Sh-Check. She went viral online for creating custom pieces to wear to games in support of Kyle. In fact, she was propositioned by Brittany Mahomes to create a look for her and she sent Brittany a jacket for Taylor Swift, as well. Stressing that it was no pressure. If Taylor wanted to wear it then great.

Taylor showed up to one of the Kansas City play-off games in the jacket and the story went viral. Because of the exposure from this moment, she turned this into a licensing deal with the NFL (according to USA Today). She inked the first women-led licensing deal with the NFL which means she can sell merch using their team logos. She told Today that this has been in the works for years but the exposure of Taylor Swift wearing one of her creations catapulted her.

A puffer vest that she is auctioning for the National Breast Cancer Foundation currently has a bid of $52,000+.

This also leads us to the shift towards female-focused advertising at the super bowl this year. It typically caters to men or tows an even line. But this year, they knew the Swift fans were watching.

The first commercial to hit the screen was for the upcoming Wicked movie featuring Ariana Grande. I could be mistaken but you don’t often see movie trailers as commercials at the Superbowl. Especially one for a movie coming out almost a year later and one that is a musical adaptation with two female leads.

This was also the first year that two beauty brands went toe-to-toe. E.l.f.and NYX. Both very different commercials. I am fascinated at Elf’s aggressive approach to marketing the last year or so. They had a superbowl spot last year with Jennifer Coolidge. They built a world in Roblox and were all over the new Mean Girls movie. In a way that was off-putting, in my opinion. I love elf but it was the first time I felt an adverse reaction to them. Their commercial featured a Judge Judy bit.

The NYX commercial was simpler and featured Cardi B. It was to promote their duck lips plumper. At the end, it showed a QR code and the longer commercial was much more NSFW. I actually liked the ad. It felt like a secret treat for those who got to the QR code quick enough.

Another commercial that I loved was with Beyonce for Verizon. At the end of it, she hinted at new music. A few moments later, she dropped two new country singles, "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carraiges". There is a rise of “off-camera” experiences when it comes to the best superbowl ads. People know that other’s are watching the superbowl on their phones

20 Feb 2024Billie Eilish vs. TikTokers + “Who the F Did I Marry?” Series Changes TikTok Algorithm Forever00:36:48
Reesa Teesa has taken over the FYP with her storytime, "Who the F Did I Marry?" (@reesamteesa on TikTok). She grew from 100k followers to 600k overnight. Then jumped to 700k+ while I was at the gym! I have not seen growth this fast since Khaby Lame, Charli D'Amelio and Addison Rae. After writing the script and going to bed, I woke up to Reesa having over 1 million followers! It has been so long since a new creator has reminded me of the magic of this app. Reesa is not following trends or viral hooks. Instead she is using the 10-minute feature and with UMG pulling their music off the app, I wouldn't be surprised if the algorithm is seeking out longer storytellers, like Reesa, to push out instead of trending audios.

In this episode, I also discuss Billie Eilish vs. TikTokers at the "People's Choice Awards" and why I...kind of agreed with her?

In this episode, we talk about:

  1. The Kardashians potentially modeling their new season on Hulu after Succession

  2. The idea of class and wealth in the U.K vs. the U.S.

  3. The representation of class systems in the Succession characters

  4. The idea of nepo-babies vs influencers

  5. The TikTok algorithm and how they randomize your virality so it feels like gambling

  6. How the cast of Succession reflects different members of the Kardashians

  7. Gen Alpha being the first generation to not know their own handwriting

  8. The idea that visuals are a new form of language on the internet

  9. The commodification of growing old

27 Dec 2023Why audiences want quality over relatability in 2024 (ft. Koosha Nouri) Pt. 200:39:43

Is relatability over-rated? As Alix Earle faces some scrutiny over a vomit dress in the closet, it seems that audiences are starting to grow weary of the over-relatable. But what will come next? Creators like Jackie Aina and Monet McMichael have grown cult-like followings in the beauty space for creating high-quality content. Is this going to be one way the pendulum swings away from what was trendy the last few years? Let's discuss!

Welcome to the season finale of #AheadOfTheCurve with Coco Mocoe! Today's episode is part 2 with top beauty brand strategist and creator, Koosha Nouri.

What will be the next big trend on TikTok and beyond in 2024? High-def content. We see this growing on beauty tok with creators like Monet McMichael. But where does it go back to? One of the top creators in the beauty space -- Jackie Aina. Will beauty filter fatigue lead to the renaissance of high def, 4k videos on social media? And what will happen to celebrity brands like Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna as the beauty space becomes fatigued with so many celebrity brands popping up left and right?

Let's talk!

24 Jul 2023Barbie: How Mattel Rebranded "The Most Hated Doll" in America ("Tiny Shoulders" Documentary)00:40:25

Just a few years ago, Barbie was seen as a polarizing and sometimes hated figure - as documented in the 2018 documentary "Tiny Shoulder". Fast forward to 2023, Barbie could be argued as one of the most universally loved brands in the lead up to the release of the movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

But how did Mattel do it? To understand the branding of Barbie, we must first dive into her history. Did you know that the founder of Barbie, Ruth Handler, created the doll because she felt like only giving young girls baby dolls indoctrinated them into motherhood?

There is a great article about Ruth Handler, the mother of Barbie, on Tablet Magazine (read here)

You can watch "Tiny Shoulders" on Hulu.

This episode is a deep dive into Mattel and the polarizing history of Barbie in the lead up to the 2023 movie. The reason I do not spend much time discussing the Barbie movie is because I stand with the SAG-AFTRA & WGA strike. This is more about the brand behind the doll, Barbie, and is not to be mistaken as a promotional piece of content for the movie.

10 Jul 2023How Threads changed the social media landscape overnight (ft. Sara McCord)01:14:09

Mark Zuckerberg finally gets a win with Threads and Elon Musk does not appear to be happy. Plus, Threads seems to have changed the social media landscape over night. In a world where everyone is chasing short-form video, does this mark the move away from that?

Sara McCord is a marketing and communications professional who I found on TikTok. She brought great thoughts to this discussion.

21 Aug 2023The Danger of Fame: Taylor Swift fans show up outside wedding rehearsal + times fans killed celebrities00:42:20

UPDATE: A day after this episode went up, a video surfaced online of Drew Barrymore's lifelong stalker rushing the stage with her and Renee Rapp at an event. Read more about the story here.

Fame is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to a person.

You may have seen videos of fans swarming a small restaurant in New Jersey that Taylor Swift was spotted inside of. Here is why that normalizes the stalking behavior to those with the worst of intentions. Plus the shifts in culture and legislation that I hope happens to protect these people from the worst of the stalkers.

Plus we talk about celebrities who have tragically died because of fame; from John Lennon to Princess Diana to Selena and more.

Here is the TikTok that I referenced that sparked this discussion.

Here is an article about the fans who showed up to stalk Taylor Swift outside of Jack Antonoff's wedding rehearsal in New Jersey.

08 May 2023Shirah Benarde: How she made $40k from TikTok & had one of the fastest deals in Shark Tank history (NightCap)00:43:46

Have you ever watched Shark Tank and wondered about the behind-the-scene details or what happens to the contestants after they strike a deal with a shark? Today's episode is with Shirah Benarde (@shirahbenarde). She and her brother founded the anti-roofie scrunchie brand, NightCapIt (@nightcapit). They had one of the fastest deals in Shark Tank history with Lori Griener.

Here is the NightCap site if you want to purchase protection for your drinks!

Here is a viral clip from their episode of Shark Tank!

We talk about how she made $40k from TikTok alone in the 6 weeks leading up to their pitch on Shark Tank. We talk about her Gen-Z focused branding strategy (community over perfection) and how she grew her brand to almost 500k on TikTok at the time of posting this episode. And we talk about her plans to branch the company out in to the music and college space.

This was such a fun interview and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with Shirah!

23 Apr 2023Coachella 2023: Frank Ocean Makes History in the Worst Way Possible00:34:29

Coachella 2023 was one of the most dramatic years the festival has ever seen, in the worst way possible. And this time it wasn't the influencers who got the most hate; but surprisingly, one of the most anticipated headliners in Coachella history.

In this episode, we talk about Frank Ocean's disappointing performance (or lack thereof) as the Sunday headliner. What exactly went wrong and the advice I would give him on repairing his image from a marketing standpoint. Is Frank Ocean an example of the "rubber band" theory in marketing going too far?

Variety magazine wrote an in-depth article about what went wrong with Frank Ocean's Coachella performance, which you can find here.

12 Jun 2023The Renaissance of YouTube & Long-Form Digital Media (w. @MichaelAndMatt)01:03:01

Are people growing tired of short-form videos, like TikToks and Reels? That is a loaded question with no right or wrong answer. But I do predict that we are about to see a resurgence of YouTubers and long-form media, like podcasting, as people seek out more substance than 10 second videos.

Today I got to speak to Michael Lindsay and Matthew Schueller (@michaelandmatt) who grew their platform on YouTube and are now launching a podcast about their surrogacy and their fatherhood journey as a same-sex couple. You can listen to new episodes of 'Who's Your Daddy?' every Thursday!

Today is an honest book review and deep dive into the trending book, Glossy by Marisa Meltzer. It is a profile piece about Emily Weiss and Glossier. But who is she?

Emily Weiss is the founder of the popular beauty brand, Glossier. She was introduced to the world as a Teen Vogue intern on the MTV show, ‘The Hills’, starring Lauren Conrad. What can we learn from “trendy” beauty brands like Glossier and female founds like Emily Weiss? Let’s dive in.

My next book review will be the Britney Spears memoir, ‘The Women in Me’. Let me know what other trending topics and books you want me to cover from a marketing perspective!

07 Aug 2023BookTok Drama Leads to Harrassment of Real-Life Hockey Player, Kai Cenat Riot & Cardi B "Mic" on eBay (Marketing Expert Reacts)01:00:22

Thank you so much for listening to, rating and sharing the podcast! Send it to all your marketing friends.

In today's episode, we react to these topics from a marketing perspective. Everything is based on opinion.

1. BookTok Drama (5:05)

InTheKnow posted a great article recapping all of the booktok drama that went down this last week, if you want to read the full article. In short, a TikToker by the name of Kierra Lewis began fixating on hockey players after reading the smut novel 'Pucking Around' by Emily Rath.

She began posting videos of real-life hockey players, one of which was Alex Wennberg. The videos became increasingly sexual and the Seattle Kraken hockey team even flew her out to the Stanley Cup. There she posted vulgar videos of players which could be seen as sexual harassment, in my opinion. TikToker, @mynameismarines, posted now deleted videos from Kierra Lewis in which Lewis talked about players strokes, her holes, and filmed hockey players without their consent during stretches with sexual commentary over the videos.

Wennberg's wife eventually spoke out against the harassment that her husband and other players faced as a result of Lewis' videos. Seattle Kraken unfollowed Lewis and deleted all their booktok videos. Lewis claimed that the team used booktok for clout, insinuating that players should be okay with her sexually suggestive videos because it gave them 'fame'.

This is all based on my own opinion of the situation. Let me know what your thoughts are.

2. Kai Cenat Riot (33:00)

Twitch Streamer, Kai Cenat, tried to hold a PS5 giveaway in NYC last Friday and it quickly turned into a riot. The situation led to legal ramifications for Kai and his team. He was arrested and released Saturday morning but has to go to court. The charges are 'inciting a riot' among other things.

Here are my thoughts on why live-streamers hold a specific type of fame and can turn out an audience that is sometimes bigger than A-List, 'mainstream' stars.

The riot felt like Tanacon 2.0 but somehow even worse. Here is an article by AP recapping the event.

3. Cardi B Microphone (51:00)

Cardi B was recently performing in Vegas and threw her microphone at an audience member who splashed water on her. Where the story sparked my interest was TMZ reported that the microphone was being listed on eBay and is currently going for $99,900. The bids end tomorrow (Tuesday).

But in my opinion, the microphone has yet to be verified. There are no identifiable features on the eBay listing. There are other listings on eBay claiming to be the same exact microphone. How do we know it is legit?

Did you know that on TikTok (and almost all social platforms) there is a thing called “warming”? This is (allegedly) where employees at an app will find a creator or account that they like and they will “heat them up” in the algorithm. There is also an alleged button where they can “cool down” an account or have it slow down in the algorithm if they do something they deem unacceptable or they want a trend to die down on the platform. This has never been confirmed by TikTok but it was discussed in a Forbes article from 2023 titled, “TikTok has a secret button to make anything go viral”.

In the article, Forbes spoke to six current and former employees of TikTok and reviewed internal documents. The article states that some employees can hand pick creators or specific videos and “supercharge” their distribution on the FYP.

While this might sound unfair, and in some ways it is. One employee was thought to have violated company policy when they heated their spouses account on the FYP. But this is a common practice for large platforms. One reason for “heating” is when the platform wants users to begin using a particular feature on the app so they will hand pick and promote creators who are early adopters and leaning into the feature when everyone else is afraid to.

In today’s episode, I am going to talk about my theories about how the TikTok algorithm is shifting right now using the Brooke Schofield vs. Clinton Kane viral storytime as a great case study. Why did TikTok push out the story now vs when it was told on the Canceled Podcast with Tana Mongeau or the Zach Sang podcast multiple times? I have a few theories.

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve w Coco Mocoe”, we will be talking about what comes next for Alex Cooper and “Call Her Daddy” as her 3-year, $60 million deal with Spotify comes to a close. In 2023, she launched the “Unwell Network” and signed Alix Earle, Madeline Argy and Harry Jowsey to her new podcast network. Dave Portnoy, himself, has called her new network a “mini Barstool Sports”. Is Alex Cooper trying to create the sorority house of the internet?

We will also react to some of her best, and worst, interviews on “Call Her Daddy”. 3-years into her record-breaking contract with Spotify, has Alex Cooper gotten better at celebrity interviews or has she gotten worse?

And lastly, we will talk about what comes next for Alex Cooper and why I think she is going to position herself as the Tyra Banks or RuPaul of the podcasting world.

05 Aug 2024The "Love Island" Effect: Authenticity Vs. Contrived Drama00:31:27
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.com

Did you know that season 6 of “Love Island USA” had almost the same amount of minutes streamed as MAX’s “House of the Dragons” Season 2? How did a show with .025% of the budget as one of televisions favorite dramas compete in viewership?

We talk about that in today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”. What was the tipping point that made a dying show peak to the number 1 spot in it’s sixth, and potentially final, season? Was it the addition of host Ariana Madix from “Vanderpump Rules”? Was it the chemistry of the cast? Was it luck?

This episode is inspired by an article I read in Forbes by Jamie Gutfreund titled, “Thinking Like A Creator Can Help Brands Build Trust. Here’s Why”. In this article, the veteran marketing strategist and long-time talent manager breaks down the virality of being authentic vs forcing it. She uses Alix Earle and “Love Island USA” season 6 as two case studies on how to do “authenticity” correctly.

13 Aug 2024"It Ends With Us" P.R. Fiasco or Genius? + The End of the "Mr. Beast" Era on YouTube00:33:15
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.com

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be discussing two great examples of why I always say, “all press is NOT good press”. One of the biggest stories in pop culture right now is about the premiere of “It Ends With Us”. This was a book turned movie from author Colleen Hoover. Director and actor Justin Baldoni bought the rights to make the movie in 2019 and hired Blake Lively to play the lead, Lily Bloom. All seemed to be going well until fans noticed that a large portion of the cast unfollowed Baldoni on socials ahead of the premiere and there seems to be tension during the press tour. Despite this potential drama, the movie brought in $50 million dollars in it’s opening weekend at the box office – doubling it’s budget of $25 million.

Could the Ryan Reynolds “Deadpool” takeover of the “It Ends With Us” press run have been a smart move, despite fans claiming that it took away from the serious undertones of the movie? Let me know your thoughts.

And in the extended episode for paid subscribers, we discuss the developing stories around Mr. Beast from employees having inappropriate relations with minors (allegedly) to his Prime Video show “Beast Games” having issues surrounding the safety of contestants on set. Does this mark the end of the “Mr. Beast” era of YouTube which was all about extreme challenges and putting people in extreme situations for a chance at some money?

The Mr. Beast story is still developing so I might have to do a separate deep dive in a few weeks, if more information comes out.

26 Aug 2024"Why more choice is a bad thing": The Paradox of Choice in Marketing 00:23:57
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.com

Hi, coconuts! Today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” is all about what I like to call “The Paradox of Choice”. This is the idea that customers are more likely to make a purchase of a product when they are presented with less variations of said product.

This episode was inspired by the marketing podcast, “Nudge”, and their episode titiled: “Why too much choice is a bad thing”. Listen to that episode here and show them some love:

We will be discussing the power of repetition when it comes to brands like In-N-Out, Head & Shoulders, McDonalds and more. Then for the paid portion of the podcast, we will be applying these findings to the growth trajectory of some of the most viral creators on TikTok & one up-and-coming music artist.

Did you know Emma Chamberlain didn’t post her first video on YouTube until 10-years after it’s inception? And it took Mr. Beast 5 years to gain his first 100,000 subscribers? The biggest creators on social media are not always the first to break big but the ones who never gave up, no matter what the industry said.

Today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” is advice to anyone who wants to create online but is afraid they missed their window. * How to find your niche online

* How to find what makes you unique within your niche

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we are talking about the reason you should NOT be watching creators and brands most close to you in your niche. Even if you don’t mean to copy them, it could happen even subconsciously. Instead, here are some methods you can use to find your own lane when posting on oversaturated apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and podcasting.

At the end of the episode, I dive into my thoughts on two pop culture topics, which are below:

Today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve” is a combination of astrology and marketing as we dive into the rise of Chappell Roan. Her fame was a slow burn until February of this year when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo on the GUTS tour and momentum picked up. This was a few weeks after Pluto shifted into Aquarius.

Pluto went back into Capricorn in September of this year and will remain there until November 18th, 2024. It will leave Capricorn for the last time in our lifetimes and go back into Aquarius for the next 18 years.

What does Chappell Roan’s rise during the Pluto in Aquarius sneak peak earlier this year signify to us about how fame and celebrity culture might shift as the mysterious planet moves into the sign of community and innovation?

Today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” is all about the three stages of fame online: trial & error, repetition then social proof. Most creators never make it to the last stage of “social proof”. But what is it and how did Addison Rae, specifically, use the concept of “social proof” to break out of the social media algorithms and become the next music industry darling and collaborate with artists like Charli XCX?

Addison Rae's new song “Aquamarine” even got a shout out from Ariana Grande on her Instagram stories this past weekend! Watch the music video below:

We will also be discussing other creators that have used social proof to their advantage; such as, Emma Chamberlain, Victoria Paris and more.

12 Nov 2024"Maybe social media doesn't matter": The Empty Marketing of the Kamala Harris Campaign 00:24:58
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.com

As someone who has dedicated their whole professional career to marketing and understanding the power of the internet, I had a huge reckoning last week when I watched one of the best run marketing campaigns, Kamala HQ, not end up moving the needle at all when it came to voting for a President.

Not only did Kamala Harris lose the electoral college, but for the first time in Donald Trump’s three elections, he won the popular vote, as well. Kamala Harris put tons of effort into her marketing and her “Kamala HQ” TikTok account gained over 5 million followers in less than 3 months. She broke the internet with phrases like “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” and Charli XCX tweeting that “kamala is brat”.

It seems maybe the lesson here is that Kamala Harris focused on short-form marketing while Donald Trump focused on long-form marketing. He appeared on dozens of podcasts, some that lasted over 3 hours, while Harris went viral using trending sounds on TikTok and posting YouTube Shorts with Jennifer Lopez.

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be talking about the brilliant marketing campaign ran by Kamala Harris that did not end up helping her win the election, at all.

I went to the TikTok Creativity Summit last week and left disappointed. As someone who championed the platform since you could only upload 15-second videos in 2019, I have seen it’s meteoric rise. I loved that TikTok was a disruptor and completely changed the way platforms source content and made it easy for anyone to become a creator.

But the magic of TikTok’s discoverability became it’s achilles heel, as well. The FYP does not prioritize showing users content from their favorite creators. But rather places emphasis on showing hundreds of new creators to users, every day. While this is great for initial exposure, it means that over time the platform’s creators are abandoning the platform because they know it is not meant for longevity.

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” podcast, I am going to be diving into my thoughts on the grim future of TikTok. Is it even worth it to try and be a TikToker anymore? With a looming TikTok ban and an algorithm that prioritizes off-putting TikTok Lives & concerning TikTok Shop items, has TikTok lost the plot? I wrote more about this in Friday’s trend report on Substack, which you can read here.

I was driving through Los Angeles the other day and noticed an uptick in WayMos. Those are the driverless cars that originated in San Francisco. As I realized this meant that Uber and Lyft drivers could eventually get replaced by robocars, it made me wonder:

What other jobs are at risk of being replaced by robots or CGI?

Then the fear donned on me: influencers. We could potentially see a world in the next 10-15 years where our comfort creators are not actual humans but rather made up of Sim-like avatars. These “generated influencers”, as I am calling it, have no racist Tweets to be unearthed, they won’t call out for sick days or face creative burn out. But most importantly, they won’t ask for any money.

We already saw the rise of CGI-creators the last 10-years with influencers like Lil Miquela growing to 2.5 million followers on IG. Spotify Wrapped launched an AI podcast episode that recaps listeners music habits through out the past year. Boston Dynamic robo-dogs walked the runway alongside models at a 2023 Coperni fashion show.

Does the rise of A.I. and robotics for art foreshadow the end of human influencers, models and podcasters?

Two weeks ago, I posted an episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” that was titled: “Stop trying to be a TikToker”. This episode was about my disenchantment with TikTok after attending their Creativity Summit in Los Angeles. It was so condescending and low-effort. You can listen to the episode on Substack here.

I had no idea when I posted that video that the ban was closer to a decision that ever before. A week later, a D.C. Appeals Court ruled against TikTok in delaying the ban that is set for January 19th, 2025.

You can read more about the ban here.

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be talking about why this is the worst possible news for TikTok. Even if the ban gets delayed, the magic of the FYP seems forever lost. Creators are jumping ship as it slowly sinks.

23 Dec 2024Blake Lively's Evidence Justin Baldoni Ruined Her Reputation00:59:01

Everything in this video and article is based on opinion and everything is alleged. I am not a journalist or lawyer. I always encourage you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

On December 21st, 2024 the New York Times published an expose article, detailing the online retaliation Blake Lively faced after raising concerns about on-set misconduct that she and others allegedly faced at the hands of co-star and producer, Justin Baldoni, along with his business partner and co-producer, Jamey Heath.

News broke that Lively was filing a 70-page complaint (a prerequisite to a lawsuit) which detailed her team’s findings of a sinister smear campaign at the hands of publicists and social contractors hired by Justin Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios.

I highlighted and annotated the 70-page court filing, which you can read for free on my Substack here.

Today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe” will be a complete breakdown of the court filing along with my own thoughts and theories as someone who works in marketing and PR.

Disclaimer: Everything in this episode is alleged and is based on my own opinion. I always encourage you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions. You can read the 52-page filing for free here.

After the Blake Lively filing broke major headlines last week, Justin Baldoni was hit with a second lawsuit, this time from his former publicist, Stephanie Jones.

Stephanie Jones, who owns Joneswork, claims that a junior employee, Jennifer Abel, went rogue and ran the alleged smear campaign against Blake Lively without her knowledge or consent. Not only that, but she claims to have evidence that Abel and Melissa Nathan planned to pin the smear campaign on Jones and use the bad press to poach more of her clients, including Baldoni, to their competing PR agencies.

All of this happened in the days leading up to the “It Ends With Us” movie premiere in August of 2024 and Jones includes dozens of texts and emails to back up her claims.

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be diving into the second lawsuit filed against Baldoni and his PR team, we will discuss what this reveals about the underbelly of Hollywood P.R., what the accused might do next to fight back and the disturbing link between crisis comms manager, Melissa Nathan, and her journalist sister, Sara Nathan.

I recently asked the coconuts in the Substack chat about the art of controlled controversy. I was going to script out an episode about times celebrities were able to drum up controversy on purpose without getting too much backlash from their core audience. But after watching the explosion of the “It Ends With Us” legal drama between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, I decided to dedicate the episode to accidental controversy.

Why are some artists able to maneuver through controversy unscathed, like Sabrina Carpenter, while other artists seem to struggle to ever bounce back, like Katy Perry?

I promised you that I would post a follow-up on the Justin Baldoni vs. Blake Lively legal fiasco if he filed a lawsuit against her and not The New York Times. I promised I would give his lawsuit a fair shot and that is what I did. 179-pages later and here are my candid thoughts. This new lawsuit includes Ryan Reynolds and Lively’s longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane.

On January 16th, Justin Baldoni, Jamey Heath, Wayfarer, Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel sued Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds for $400-million dollars in damages. They claim that Blake Lively did not read the book and was flippant about filming but then switch tones and say that she cared so much about the book and story that she concocted an evil plan to steal the movie and franchise out from under him. So which one is it?

I encourage you to read the lawsuit yourself and come to your own conclusions. Everything is alleged and based on my opinion. I am not a lawyer or journalist, I am just nosy! Always do your own research. You might have differing opinions from me and that is okay but I encourage you to read all four of the lawsuits in full before coming to a conclusion.

What do Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams and Tate McRae all have in common? They all have rumors swirling that they are "industry plants" all over online forums, especially as their fame reaches new heights, like after the Grammy's.

But do "industry plants" even exist in the music industry? Or is their meteoric fame the by product of hard work, vision and good artist development?

18 Feb 2025The Internet Hates Female-Founded Brands: Poppi Vs. Olipop00:26:59
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit cocomocoe.substack.com

Commenting is only available on Substack!

When I began seeing the push back against Poppi on social media, I was confused. It seems that people were upset with them for sending out vending machines to influencers ahead of the 2025 Super Bowl.

I agree with the critique that they could have been more inclusive in their selection of influencers. Inclusion from brands is a topic I have talked about on my podcast before.

But what I don’t agree with is the anger over them seeming “out-of-touch”.

Why is it “out-of-touch” for Poppi to send out temporary vending machines to influencers but not “out-of-touch” for Dunkin Donuts to pay Ben Affleck $10-million dollars for 30-seconds?

My theory: the internet hates female-founded brands that market to a primarily female demographic. This is compounded by the fact that the influencer space is dominated by women.

Poppi is a brand with a front-facing, female founder. Her name is Allison Ellsworth. Even though it was co-founded with her partner, Stephen, she is the one who often appears on camera and was even the face of their video response on TikTok as the controversy kicked up.

Olipop, Poppi’s biggest founder, began leaving comments in TikTok videos claiming the vending machines were $25,000. Something that was debunked by AdWeek and something Ellsworth disputes, as well. But because Olipop is founded by two men, no one is calling them “catty”, “jealous” or “b****y” for spreading rumors about a competitor in TikTok comments. If a female-founded brand did that, there would be hell to pay.

As always, there is no right or wrong answer here. Keep it respectful in the discussions on Substack, as you always do.

And thank you for being a coconut! ❤️ 🥥

24 Feb 2025How Addison Rae Quit TikTok & Became a Pop Star00:18:56

Who else has used the rubber band method to create mystery and desire from their audience? You can let me know in the comments on the Substack at cocomocoe.substack.com/podcast/

You can read Rolling Stone’s cover story on Addison Rae here

In today’s episode of “Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe”, we will be talking about Addison Rae’s recent Rolling Stone cover story. In it, she gives some insight into her mysterious strategy. How was she able to break through the stiff, glass ceiling of influencers before her and become pop music’s newest darling? She has performed alongside Charli XCX, had co-signs from Grammy-winners like Finneas and most importantly, has Gen-Z on the edge of their seat. A generation that is known for not holding back their insults and honesty when it comes to how they feel about TikTok’s biggest creators.

I believe Addison Rae used what I call the “rubber band method” in marketing. But what exactly is that and how can you implement it as a creator, yourself?

In today’s episode of "Ahead of the Curve with Coco Mocoe", we will talk about some fun facts about the making of my favorite film of the year, "Anora", plus the marketing strategies behind the scenes. Then in the second half of the episode, exclusively for paying coconuts of the best-selling Substack, we are going to talk about my thoughts on the specific branding. My theory of this whole episode is that they created a popular movie by refusing to be popular. And we will talk about how you can do something similar whether you are an artist, creator or brand owner.

Sean Baker and Mikey Madison were a dream team together for this underdog film but their marketing team was the secret third man who helped push the movie across the finish line at the Oscar's.
