Zwei Dorfbewohner finden einen Schatz - eine wertvolle römische Servierplatte aus reinem Silber. Zwar müssen sie sich die Belohnung mit dem Farmer und der Besitzerin des Landes, Lady Repton, teilen, aber es bleibt immer noch genug für alle. Der Archäologe Professor Cartwright bietet an, den Fund sicher in seinem Safe zu verstauen. Doch als am nächsten Tag der Experte des Britischen Museums eintrifft, um den Fund zu begutachten, ist dieser verschwunden! Die Polizei verdächtigt eine bekannte Gruppe von Kunstdieben. Und beinahe auch für ihn, wäre da nicht seine Assistentin Nina Brändle, eine raubeinige schwäbische Blondine, die nach einem schweren Motorradunfall nicht mehr im Außendienst arbeiten darf. Aber wozu eine Waffe, Krücken tun's doch auch! Die geschwätzige Nina Brändle ist als sympathische Nervensäge so etwas wie Finkbeiners unwillkommener Schutzengel, den er erst schätzen lernt, als es ihm ernsthaft an den Kragen geht.
