Big Night with Chris Bravender29 Jan 202601:10:29

Welcome to our debut episode. In this one, we discuss 90's food dramedy classic "Big Night" with my good friend Chris Bravender. We get into all sorts of fun stuff about themes and character, among other topics.

Follow the show on BlueSky or Instagram @yourfavoriteflick. We're on Letterboxd @favoriteflick. You can also email us at yourfavoriteflick@gmail.com. Be in touch with your ideas!

Next week we will be talking David Fincher's "Se7en" (or "Seven" if you don't want to be obnoxious) with teacher and D&D player extraordinaire Michael Young.

Se7en with Michael Young04 Feb 202601:01:57

Join us for a discussion of David Fincher's "Se7en" with my friend Michael Young. Michael came extra- prepared and gets deep into scenes, themes and characters. He made me think about a movie I've seen a bunch in some ways I never had before.

For those who want to view ahead of time, next week's episode will feature full-time professional film editor and part-time amateur brother Jeffrey Glaser talking with me about "Raising Arizona", a shared beloved film for the two of us.

Raising Arizona with Jeffrey Glaser11 Feb 202601:00:20

This week I'm joined by my brother, professional film editor Jeffrey Glaser for a discussion of a shared childhood favorite, Raising Arizona. It's not an overstatement to say that this is one of the movies that got Jeff and me into how and why movies work. We have a lot of fun and take advantage of his expertise to get a little technical too. I hope you enjoy!

Next week, we're going to talk Midnight Run with Brad Coffman. So, if you like 80's comedies, this is a good mini-run for you.

You can find The Hons, who have been kind enough to provide the music for our show, at https://thehons.bandcamp.com/album/to-skyward.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with Joe Shorter25 Feb 202600:45:40

Join us on the bridge of the Enterprise as we discuss my favorite Star Trek move, The Wrath of Khan. I'm joined by Joe Shorter, a friend, fellow nerd (he owns it), and supporter of the show right out of the gates. While we do get a little nerdy, the core of our conversation is about the themes and ideas presented in this low-budget, by big sci-fi standards, scrappy masterpiece. We have some fun along the way, as well, and we explore what the heck Scotty is up to when he's not on board. Prepare for warp speed!

Midnight Run with Brad Coffman18 Feb 202600:47:36

Join us for a fun cross-country ride with Brad Coffman as we discuss Martin Brest's 1988 buddy road comedy Midnight Run. We'll talk about performance, Robert de Niro's and Charles Grodin's leads of course, but also the incredible supporting cast. We hit on funny moments, but most importantly, we spend time talking about the relationships that drive this heartfelt film.

Our music is courtesy of The Hons. Find their fantastic album To Skyward on Bandcamp: https://thehons.bandcamp.com/album/to-skyward

Uncle Buck with Barrett Landen04 Mar 202600:47:15

Welcome back! Join Barrett Landen and I for a fun discussion of late-80's comedy classic Uncle Buck today. We talk about the lasting appeal of John Candy and John Hughes, the budding genius of Macaulay Culkin, and how this movie pulls at the heartstrings while making us laugh.

An American Werewolf in London with Paul Sparacello18 Mar 202600:40:14

Join Paul Sparacello, who has unwittingly been my friend for over a quarter century, for an exploration of An American Werewolf in London, a movie that we argue does about the best job possible of combining comedy and horror into one tasty package. (Tasty is a werewolf joke...because they bite people...you know. Fine, I'll stop.)

We're going up to two shows each week on a trial basis. This weekend, be on the lookout for Black Panther with my friend LaNija Redmond. She and I came to that movie from very different experiences and vantage points but both found something that we deeply treasure.

Inglorious Basterds with Julia Mott15 Mar 202600:46:06

Welcome to the long-awaited premiere of co-producer Julia Mott to whom I am lucky enough to be married.

We're digging into Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece in this one. (That's right. I called it his masterpiece. Come at me!) We have a lot of fun in this one focusing on our favorite sequences, a few of the many outstanding performances, as well as trying to figure out what the heck QT is up to, in the best possible ways.

Don't forget to rate, review and follow the show. Find us @yourfavoriteflick on Instagram and BlueSky, @favoriteflick on Letterboxd, or email us at yourfavoriteflick@gmail.com.

Check out our house band, The Hons, on Bandcamp, as well. Trust me, you won't regret spending the $10 to buy their album To Skyward.

Ghostbusters with Brad Coffman25 Mar 202600:42:37
Hey YouFFers (we may need a contest to decide on a better name for you loyal fans), we're back for a Wednesday romp with returning guest Brad Coffman. The man lives a life highly informed by the 4-man army known as the Ghostbusters, so he's here to talk about the movie that started it all.I mention up top in this one that our very own musician-in-residence Richard Bates has a new album out: Bates and Sons and Daughters. Please check it out. If you're anything like me, and I hope for your sake that you are, you'll love it:https://richardbates.bandcamp.com/album/bates-and-sons-and-daughters
Black Panther with LaNija Redmond22 Mar 202600:46:42

We're talking MCU for the first time today, people. Knowing my friends, it won't be the last. But for my money, we're kicking off with the cream of the crop in Black Panther. Coming off the Oscar success of Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and the rest of the Sinners team, we thought it would be a great time to bring you our thoughts on this earlier collaboration.

This movie gets deep, and so does LaNija. We came to this movie with very different experiences and perspectives, and both fell in love with it immediately. I hope our conversation can add a little something to your appreciation of this classic.

Cool Hand Luke with Gene Gallerano01 Apr 202600:47:15

Gene Gallerano, co-director of the new "creature feature" The Yeti, joins us. It is showing at 150 AMC Theatres around the country this Saturday night, April 4th, as part of their Thrills and Chills series. Please check your local listings, as they say.

Today, Gene is here to discuss the Paul Newman classic Cool Hand Luke. Gene has a great eye for cinematic technique and, even more importantly to my mind, a storyteller's feel for character and theme. I was enlightened by a number of things Gene brought to the table, and I'm sure you will be too!

What Dreams May Come with Adrienne "Butsy" Keller29 Mar 202600:48:11

You know that feeling when you awake in a painting after an accident and find out and realize that a guy straight off an Oscar win for Best Supporting is your spirit guide? Well, if you do, have I got an episode for you! We're talking What Dreams May Come, the Robin-Williams-and-Annabella-Sciorra-starring afterlife drama from 1997. My Aunt Butsy joins me as we talk grief and death but also hope and redemption. Please join us.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Sahil Godiwala05 Apr 202600:54:15

Tinker Tailor Solder Sa? That's right, my old friend Sahil Godiwala, who barely knows how to listen to a podcast, joins us to talk about this masterpiece of a movie, based on a masterpiece of a novel by John le Carre. We can't shut up about Oldman's performance as George Smiley in this one. I will tell you that, even as two people who have discussed this movie with each other ad nauseam, we make some new discoveries as we hash it out on mic. Enjoy!

The Master with Jeff Elizardi22 Apr 202601:06:55

"Master, master, where's the dreams that I've been after? Master, master, you promised only lies!"

Wait, that's from something else entirely, though maybe it's not wholly inappropriate here. We've got Jeff Elizardi, longtime friend of mine and fan of the show, here to discuss The Master, a Paul Thomas Anderson film, led by Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It's an exploration into nothing less than the soul of humanity. We give it its just reverence, but we're also cutups by nature, so I promise there are some laughs throughout.

This Sunday, J.B. Raasch is coming at you to talk about The Brotherhood of the Wolf, a French action period piece that is also...well, it's something of genre grab bag to be honest, in the best possible sense.

Skyfall with Barrett Landen20 Apr 202600:46:47

Dum, di-di, dum-dum...Dum, di-di, dum-dum...Dum, di-di, dum-dum...Bwaaah... bwah-bwah bwaaah...Bwaaah... bwah-bwah bwaaah...Bwah, bwah, bwaaaaah!WAAAH... WAAAH... WAAAAAAH!Dah-dah-dah-dah-DAAAH!

Wow, is that the dumbest way I could have thought of to intro that we're covering our first, and my favorite, Bond Movie? It's Skyfall day, and we're joined by returning guest Barrett Landen, a Bond and car aficionado, to get into what makes this a great Bond flick, a great action flick and so much more. Buckle up and enjoy!

The Devil Wears Prada with Crystal Coffman15 Apr 202600:49:50

We're getting psyched for The Devil Wears Prada 2, so we're bringing you my fun conversation with Crystal Coffman on the original. We talked characters and themes and had a lot of laughs along the way on this one.

On Sunday, we're going to be coming at you with Skyfall with returning guest Barrett Landen. This one may be a little more intense than his Uncle Buck episode, but I think it's one that any Bond fan will enjoy. And if you're not a Bond fan, maybe we'll convince you to at least give this one a shot.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure with Van Hughes12 Apr 202600:47:06

Looking for Adventure? Van Hughes and I have a Big one for you today. We're talking Pee-wee! Van has a truly lifelong and abiding love for this movie, and he shares what makes it so special with eloquence and a laugh.

Van is an actor and musician, and his new single "Location" is now available wherever you get your music. It's bold, it's catchy, and it's terrific! You can follow Van: @vanhughesmusic on Instagram.

The Lost Boys with Andy Chrestman08 Apr 202600:50:19

It's The Lost Boys. It's Joel Schumaker going over the top Joel Schumacher-style. It's Kiefer Sutherland being cool AF. It's Diane Wiest coming off an Oscar win. It's the two Coreys first joint outing! All this and vampires! How did we get this lucky?

My pal Andy Chrestman is with us today to bite into it. (I apologize. That had to be done.) Andy is a writer, and he's watched this movie more times than he cares to count. We get into performances, aesthetics and how brilliantly this film fit into and represents the 80's.

Andy is working on a memoir, so he hasn't posted as much of his writing over the past few years, but here is his Medium archive: https://medium.com/@achrestman

If his pieces don't move you, we are very different people.

Join us on Sunday when friend and superfan (of the show; not of mine) Phil Murray will be discussing Dazed and Confused.

A note of apology: We had planned to put out Good Will Hunting with Chris Bravender today, but I messed something up with the recording/editing. Chris has graciously offered to re-record that one if it's not salvageable, so it will be headed your way soon.

In Bruges with Steve Kind03 May 202600:54:37

It's our long-awaited first episode set in Belgium. Is it Tintin? Is it Poirot? No, it's a couple of Irish hit men, by way of London, hiding out In Bruges.

Steve Kind joins me as we talk the hell, purgatory, and the thin chance at redemption in this great darkly comic crime flick.

Steve is a recovery advocate who has written a stirring memoir about his own recovery, Inspirational Dissatisfaction (https://www.amazon.com/Inspirational-Dissatisfaction-Steven-Kind/dp/B09KDSRYKN)

The Dark Knight with Daniel Sovich29 Apr 202600:51:07

"If you can be anybody, be yourself...unless you can be Batman. Then, be Batman."

Well, I'm not Batman, and neither is my guest Daniel Sovich, at least I don't think he is. He is, however, and actor/musician who's been on the Broadway stage and is now in Nashville writing and playing music, both under his own name and DiscoFox. His stuff is truly excellent. Links below. I suggest checking out "Keep It" first, which has an opening line that is spot on for this episode.

"All Night" - https://youtu.be/FQs7trIzN20?si=oCWOwFaCV4K3FOy-

DiscoFox Home - https://linktr.ee/discofox

This Sunday, we have my friend Steve Kind on the show to discuss his favorite, In Bruges, a dark comedy about hitmen "on vacation."

Brotherhood of the Wolf with J.B. Raasch26 Apr 202600:48:55

Hungry like the wolf? Then, please have a listen to J.B. Raasch and I biting into Brotherhood of the Wolf. I know what you're thinking, "Just how many 18th century French costume drama / creature flick / bang-up action flicks can I watch in a month?" Well, trust me, make this one of them.

We get into how these elements coalesce, the beauty of constraints, and the range of influences that this movie wears proudly.

This Wednesday, we have actor/musician Daniel Sovich, Disco Dan himself, coming on the show to breakdown The Dark Knight. That's gonna be a fun one too.

The Big Lebowski with Jacob Eben13 May 202600:48:01

We're off to see Lebowski, the wonderful hippie of Oz! Jacob Eben, post-production pro and essayist, joins us to talk about his love of the Coen Brothers, the importance of sound in the mediums of movies and television and, of course, his take on The Big Lebowski, which has a lot to do with a certain 1939 technicolor marvel.

Jacob has worked on shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Black Bird and Perry Mason, so he knows what he's talking about, and he brings his experience to the discussion in an approachable way.

Dazed and Confused with Phil Murray10 May 202600:46:07

A couple of 90's teens talk about their favorite 70's-set high school flick as Phil Murray and I dig into Dazed and Confused. One of the great hangout movies, this one is stacked with then-future stars. We talk cliques, party, and one rather creepy character who has somehow become a cultural icon.

Alien with Laura Alcoriza06 May 202600:55:08

On a podcast, no one can hear you scream. Or at least they can't until weeks later, when it's probably too late to do anything about it.

That's right: it's Alien, the Ridley Scott 1979 original that kicked off a franchise that is still with us today. This one finds the balance of sci-fi, horror and suspense in a way that I don't think has ever been matched.

Our guest Laura Alcoriza brings heat on this one. I won't lie: I struggled to keep up. Hopefully, I didn't make a total fool of myself, at least not any more than usual.

Obsession with Daniel Sovich07 Jun 202600:48:57

It's our first new (well newish) release episode! Past guest Daniel Sovich texted me earlier this week to let me know that he was obsessed with Obsession and that we had to record on it ASAP. I dutifully got my ticket, and we sat down just this past Thursday to break it down.

Daniel is a heckuva songwriter and musician, based in Nashville. Check him out!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall04 Jun 202600:47:38

We're heading to Hawaii!!! Well, at least the characters are heading to Hawaii. We just get to jealously gawk at them in paradise. It's the incomparable (because who would we compare to him to) Jeff Elizardi returning to the show to talk Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

We have a lot of fun with this movie, highlighting what makes the comedy and the characters tick. There also is an important message partway through about certain people who are no longer allowed to listen to the show. You better check to see whether you've made the cut.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Graham Skipper31 May 202600:49:04

Director/Writer/Actor/Friend Graham Skipper joins me to talk The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, his hands-down favorite film. Saying that Graham knows his stuff on this one is the understatement of the year. He not only eloquently describes what he loves about this gritty 70's indie horror but also fills us in on its production history and its place in the world of horror.

Christine with ScottLucius Wilder27 May 202600:55:16

It's ScottLucius Wilder, filmmaker and chef, joining me today to talk about 80's horror classic Christine.

Scotty goes deep on knowledge of 80's movies, John Carpenter, techniques, and well, pretty much everything. We also had a blast making this one. I hope it's half as fun to listen to.

Check out Scotty's incredible shorts on his his Instragram @scottluciuswilderredux

Top Gun with Jeffrey Glaser20 May 202600:50:10

My brother and fan favorite (seriously, people seem to love his previous episode though I can't imagine why) Jeffrey Glaser joins us again on an EMERGENCY episode to talk Top Gun's 40th Anniversary Re-release. Jeff has some thoughts about how ruthlessly the Oscars treated the best popcorn flick ever made, and he shares many of them. He wanted to share all of them, but I didn't have 57 hours of recording time to spare. Strap up for this ride into the Glaser Zone!

The Third Man with Wes McNeely17 May 202600:48:58

The setting? Post-war occupied Vienna. The story? A racketeer, his friend, his woman, penicillin, and death. The actors? Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles. The director? Oscar winner Carol Reed.

It's The Third Man: suspense, anxiety and a shocking amount of great comedy. Join us.

Being John Malkovich with Scott Gold10 Jun 202600:56:54

Join writer and critic Scott Gold and I as we discuss the postmodern Spike Jonze flick Being John Malkovich. Scott goes deep on this one, on both the film itself and the tradition behind it. We have a ton of fun with it, as well.
