| Episode 133: Challenges in coaching: The Uncoachables | 07 Nov 2025 | 00:23:02 | |
Is anyone really uncoachable?
You may recall Tom saying on a previous podcast that he could have a good coaching conversation with Barack Obama but that he would probably turn down the opportunity to coach the current American president, and that perhaps he is uncoachable.
In this episode we explore this topic more deeply, looking at what might get in the way of someone being coachable at the time that we come to coach them. We also explore whether coaching is right for everyone and whether we can possibly be the right coach for everyone. We also explore whether Tom has softened his stance on coaching the current president or whether he really is uncoachable.

| Episode 123: Coaching Approaches – Parts Work | 29 Aug 2025 | 00:12:43 | |
Having different internal parts of our psyche has been provoking interest in great thinkers for thousands of years. The Greeks and the Romans had the theory of us all having different humours
Freud had his id, ego and superego, and psychologists ever since have been playing with different theories about the different parts that we may possess and how best to integrate them into our overall identity.
In this episode we explore what Parts Work is, the journey that it has travelled over the last 50 years and the different ways in which we might approach the concept.
Tom has been working with his own version of Parts Work for a decade now, so has an interest in shedding some light on the topic.
Join Tom for this short solo episode of the podcast where he will be revealing his own thinking on the subject of parts in coaching,

| Episode 33: A Coaching Demo | 08 Dec 2023 | 00:24:51 | |
If you've ever looked for demonstrations of coaching online you may have noticed that there aren't many particularly good ones out there.
When looking for great examples of coaching, the two of us are always looking to see exquisite attention and lots of lovely space. We're hoping to hear crisp open questions, accurate summarising and reflecting back and the coach resisting being directive. We'd like to observe the coachee being supported in making sense of their own world and generating some new thinking.
Tired of searching for the holy grail we thought we'd create our own demonstration and so, in this episode, we engaged in a genuine coaching session.
During the coaching Helen gave some thought to a dilemma that had been on her mind for some time. The conversation resulted in Helen making a decision, which she has now taken action on, allowing her to move towards her desired objective.
During the coaching session Tom utilises the TOM'S CODE model to guide the coaching process. This is the model that we introduce everyone to at the beginning of our Transformational Coaching Diploma training.
TOM'S CODE provides a framework to hang the coaching on. It's not meant to be prescriptive and, at times, the coach will flex their use of the model in order to respond to the coachee.
We train coaches to work in a transformational way, looking to bring about awareness, empowerment and autonomy. TOM'S CODE focuses on bringing about the change that the coachee wants to see.

| Episode 32: Coaching Topics: Do Relationships Belong in the Coaching Room? | 01 Dec 2023 | 00:31:32 | |
Some coaches are more comfortable with addressing relationship issues with coachees than others, but the topic is bound to come up eventually in the coaching room.
Whether it's managing a tricky relationship at work, or navigating our communication with those around us, relationships will surface in the coaching room and it's useful to think about how we will handle them as a coach.
We are all social creatures and none of us live in isolation. Our coachee's relationships are an enduring feature of their life journey and they are going to hit some bumps in the road. As coaches it is important that we recognise that being able to hold the space for coachees as they discuss their relationships is an essential part of our role in working holistically.
In this episode we discuss what coaches might choose to do when relationships are at the centre of a coaching conversation.

| Episode 31: Coaching Tools – The Parent – Adult – Child Model | 24 Nov 2023 | 00:30:17 | |
Following on from our last episode on Transactional Analysis, this episode focuses on the key model from the Transactional Analysis approach to coaching; the Parent – Adult – Child Model. This is a model that will help us, as coaches, to understand the ego states that our coachee might be entering into at certain times during interactions with others. It may also help us to talk to coachees about whether they are responding in an adult way to the here and now or are drawing on old, learned, patterns of response. In addition, using the Parent - Adult – Child model might allow coachees to gain a different perspective on the behaviour of those that they interact with.
In this episode we look at the model in more detail and discuss how and when you might introduce it your clients.

| Episode 30: Coaching Approach - Transactional Analysis | 17 Nov 2023 | 00:36:29 | |
Transactional Analysis is a psychological theory that can help us to understand and explore human interactions and relationships.
In this episode we explore, what it is, where it comes from, and how it can be a useful approach to use in the coaching room. We also share two models, The Parent - Adult - Child model, and the Drama Triangle, that might prove useful in the coaching room. Both models can be introduced to coachees to encourage them to reflect on their relationships and to allow them to gain new perspectives around the ways that their interactions with others play out.

| Episode 28: Coaching Topic: Mindset | 03 Nov 2023 | 00:27:17 | |
Mindset is a term regularly used within coaching but what exactly is it? How might we encourage someone to reflect on their own mindset in the coaching room? How might we work with coachees to adapt fixed ways they have of thinking about certain areas of their life and allow them to develop and grow.
In this episode we explore the work of Carol Dweck and her Growth Mindset theory. Complete with a brief example of a coaching conversation around a mindset issue, we think you'll enjoy this episode and hope that it will provide you with some food for thought.

We will regularly be devoting a podcast episode to discussing some widely held coaching beliefs, common coaching practices and coaching challenges that are often pondered and debated.
Accountability is often something that is referred to by coachees as a reason for having coaching; so their coach can be their accountability partner and hold them to account. In this episode we will be exploring accountability and whether it is the role of a coach to hold their coachee to account, or whether they should be demonstrating their support in other ways.

| Episode 122: To interrupt or not to interrupt, that is the question. | 22 Aug 2025 | 00:25:01 | |
You may have heard us talk about interrupting coachees on previous podcasts, but we see and hear so much from other coaches talking about this topic online that we thought we'd set our stall out in a more thorough and robust way.
We have also noticed an increase in very visible coaches rebadging interrupting as interjecting, and saying that it's ok, even necessary. So, we thought we'd talk through what we see as the subtle differences between interrupting and interjecting and share our perspectives in this dedicated episode on the topic.
In this episode, not only do we discuss interruptions and interjections, and the difference between the two, you will also get to hear a couple of Tom's 'dad jokes', and bear witness to a couple of his incredible animal impersonations (although, actually, there are no bears).
We could apologise for the extensive presence of laughter in this episode, but we won't, because as we have said before, we take coaching seriously, and ourselves less so.

| Episode 23: Coaching Topic: Resilience | 29 Sep 2023 | 00:28:55 | |
Resilience is a favourite topic of Tom's. So much so, he has explored, researched, taught, and written about resilience for a number of years now. So, what better person to ask about how we might explore resilience, or a perceived lack of resilience, when our clients start discussing it in the coaching room? In this episode we explore the various forms that resilience might take; what it might look like; what the factors are that will be influencing the resilience of our coachees; and how we might help our coachees maintain or replenish their resilience through good times and bad. Tom will also be sharing his own TELEGRAM model of resilience with us.

| Episode 22: Coaching Tools: Conflict Style Matrix | 22 Sep 2023 | 00:25:00 | |
Whether we view tension within a work or social relationship as conflict, or just the other person being awkward, we will all have our own way of approaching these potentially difficult situations. In this episode we explore how you might help your coachees to understand their approach to difficult situations with others.
A great tool to use when discussing conflict styles with your coachees is the Conflict Styles Matrix, which stems from the work of Thomas and Kilmann.
We'll also look at how a coachee might flex their own conflict styles in different situations and how this might lead to them experiencing more positive outcomes. Resources: Find out more about the 5 conflict styles in our blogpost: https://www.yourcoachingjourney.com/understanding-conflict-styles/ Here's an illustration of where they sit in terms of cooperation and assertiveness:

| Episode 14: The Cognitive Behavioural Approach To Coaching | 28 Jul 2023 | 00:31:46 | |
In this episode we introduce Cognitive Behavioural Coaching or CBC. It's an approach that brings together the practice of coaching and the concepts and methods that underpin Cognitive Behavioural Psychology.
CBC offers a number of distinctive models and techniques that help coaches to understand the barriers that coachees may be placing in their own way.
Engaging with CBC allows coaches to support their coachees in increasing their awareness of their limiting beliefs and unhelpful thinking and looking at ways in which they can overcome and change them.

| Episode 121: Critical Thinking | 15 Aug 2025 | 00:23:24 | |
We believe that one of the most important aspects of coaching is the generation of new thinking on the part of the coachee. Before we get to focusing on the options that the coachee has, or how they might forward, we need to explore their situation with them and allow them to assess it in an objective and coherent way.
In order to do that we will probably need to challenge the client to engage in some some critical thinking around the thoughts they have already had, what the reality of their situation is, and the viability of all of the options they have available to them. Only then is it going to be useful for the coachee to decide on a way forward.
In this episode we explore the topic of Critical Thinking in the coaching room and give some thought as to how we might best facilitate the coachee engaging with this particular thought process.

| Episode 11: Imposter Syndrome | 07 Jul 2023 | 00:32:29 | |
In this episode we are exploring a topic that we both notice showing up a lot in the coaching room. It's also a phenomenon that we have both found ourselves experiencing at various times. There's also a very good chance that you have some experience of it yourself. We're talking about Imposter Syndrome.
Research suggests that between 70 and 84% of people engaging a coach experience feeling like an imposter. It's therefore helpful to reflect on what is meant by the term 'imposter syndrome' and to consider what approaches you might adopt to support your clients when they bring it in to the coaching room.

| Episode 10: Coaching Tools: A new model | 30 Jun 2023 | 00:25:12 | |
In this episode we discuss a new coaching model that we have introduced in our training programme. Having used and taught the GROW model for many years we have long recognised that it has its limitations, especially when coachees don't come to the coaching room with specific goals.
We've created a model that flows with the natural rhythm of a coaching conversation and provides the coachee with the opportunity to reflect on the importance of the topic they have brought to the coaching room; the change that they would like to see; and the new thinking that they have generated during the session.

| Episode 8: The Solution-Focused Approach to Coaching | 16 Jun 2023 | 00:20:51 | |
In this episode we introduce solution-focused coaching. It's an approach that is particularly popular in organisations as it seeks to move the coachee quickly to a solution and a way forward. It's also a coaching approach that doctors tend to feel comfortable with as they are very used to taking a history, considering symptoms, diagnosing a condition, and offering advice on a way forward. Within a coaching conversation the challenges for doctors include refraining from offering advice, allowing the coachee to generate their own options and deciding for themselves how they might move forward.
You might recognise some of the elements of the solution-focused approach that we discuss and perhaps even use them in your own coaching without realising where they originated.

| Episode 120: Easy Change and Hard Change | 08 Aug 2025 | 00:29:54 | |
Not all change is created equal. Some change is easy and some is hard.
All qualified coaches should be well equipped to support coachees when they are contemplating easy change. When it comes to hard change, coaches adopting straightforward coaching approaches might not cope so well with facilitating this change for coaches who are finding change more of a struggle.
What makes the difference between easy change and hard change is going to depend from coachee to coachee and we have to be agile when approaching the coaching room and what the coachee brings.
Sometimes, we won't know in the first session that hard change is going to be hard. It may not become apparent until a few sessions down the line, so we have to be ready for that and curious about how we might support the coachee through their difficulty with the change.
In this episode, we explore the differences between easy change and hard change and the power of coaching in facilitating both. In our discussion you will find out why we believe that Transformational Coaching is such a powerful approach to helping coachees, whatever type of change they're facing.

| Episode 2: The Person Centred Approach To Coaching | 05 May 2023 | 00:14:52 | |
In this episode, produced by MonkeyPants Productions, we will be introducing the person-centred approach to coaching. It's an approach that, if you have had some coaching or any coach training, you will probably recognise, even if you didn't know what it was called.
The person-centred approach provides the basis for non-directive coaching, so it lies at the heart of most people's coaching. Today we will discuss where it stems from, what the key elements of it are, when it is best used, and when perhaps you will want to switch to a different approach.

| Episode 118: 4,000 Weeks is a Short Time in Which to Live Well. | 25 Jul 2025 | 00:28:48 | |
According to the author Oliver Burkeman we each have approximately 4,000 weeks to run around on our planet.
Some people will get a few more weeks and some will get a few less, but Burkeman's point is that our time to enjoy life is finite.
In this episode we dive into Burkeman's thought-provoking book 4,000 Weeks: Time and How to Use It. Join us as we explore its main themes and how they might assist us in the coaching room. The title of the book makes it sound like a time-management tomb, but in reality it is more of an existential reflection on our relationship with time and on how we might have a more realistic sense of what we have time for.
Join us for this podcast where we explore Oliver Burkeman's ideas and how they provide us with a way of exploring what is important for our coachee to focus on as they navigate their finite time on earth.

| Episode 117: Time to Say Goodbye | 18 Jul 2025 | 00:28:12 | |
We know that contracting at the beginning of a coaching relationship is vital and an integral part of our coaching. It sets the parameters within which we will work with our clients. Ending the coaching relationship should be seen as another vital and integral stage in a coaching journey. The ending may, however, raise some questions, cause some confusion and may even result in some discomfort.
How do we know when it's time to say goodbye to our coachee? How do we end the coaching ethically and with compassion? What if our coachees don't want to say goodbye?
In this episode we explore these questions, for the benefit of the coach and the coachee.

| Episode 116: Interview with Dr. Hannah Coysh | 11 Jul 2025 | 00:25:55 | |
Tom was delighted to have the opportunity to interview Dr Hannah Coysh, who completed our Doctors' Transformational Coaching Diploma a couple of years ago now.
Tom thoroughly enjoyed the conversation, and you'll understand why when you listen to the podcast and experience a taste of Hannah's infectious enthusiasm for life. Hannah is a Frailty GP, A Lifestyle Medic and Coach, a New to GP Coach and Mentor, a Medical Student Tutor, and also offers coaching to those experiencing pregnancy loss, holding a safe space for them and helping them to find a way to move forward. Hannah manages to incorporate coaching into all aspects of her professional life. Hannah is also the person who introduced us to the world of Lifestyle Medicine and suggested that we share our coaching offering with doctors operating within that arena. Tom caught up with Hannah to find out about her journey into the world of lifestyle medicine and coaching, and her current approach to coaching. Tom asked Hannah about her favourite coaching tools and questions and what learning to coach has given her. Hannah also talks about her passion for the outdoors and her enthusiasm for an activity that Tom was happy to leave her to enjoy without him.

| Episode 115: What do coaching doctors do after completing the Doctors' Transformational Coaching Diploma? | 04 Jul 2025 | 00:16:05 | |
We often get asked how doctors use their new coaching skills once they've completed our Transformational Coaching Diploma programme.
This is obviously a question that our coaching doctors have the opportunity to explore for themselves in advance, of completing the programme, as they receive coaching throughout the course. There is plenty of time for them to consider what the future holds for them and what direction they might go in.
With over 300 doctors having completed our diploma we have a good range of coaching doctors who have let us know what they are up to.
In this episode we explore how some of our alumni are using coaching in their professional lives. We hope that the episode may inspire you, encourage you and reaffirm your interest in learning to coach.

| Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law? | 27 Jun 2025 | 00:16:14 | |
Episode 114: Challenges in Coaching: When is a law not a law?
Is a certain amount of stress good for you? Definitely! Is there a point at which the amount of stress becomes detrimental? Most certainly! Is there a law, a model, or a formula that tells us how much stress is too much? Contrary to popular opinion, probably not!
In this episode Tom airs his frustrations about an often rolled out piece of research called the 'Yerkes-Dodson Law'. We discuss the law's origins, what Yerkes and Dodson were actually measuring and how the law has become a universal measure for all sorts of theories.
As we often say, all models are wrong but some are useful. When it comes to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, we may well be exploring a law that doesn't actually exist.

| Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2 | 20 Jun 2025 | 00:29:30 | |
Episode 113: Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 2
In our last episode we explored how leadership might show up in the coaching room, even if we're not formally engaged in leadership coaching and why, as Transformational Coaches, we might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.
In this episode we're putting an element of theory behind the concept of leadership and in doing so, explore a number of different leadership styles; ten in fact. We discuss the pros and cons of each leadership style and when it might be useful to engage in each. We also offer examples of coaching situations where we have each discussed leadership styles with our coachees.
Join us in this episode of the podcast, where we complete our conversation on leadership in the coaching room.

| Episode 112: Topic: Leadership Coaching Part 1 | 13 Jun 2025 | 00:20:19 | |
If you've coached an individual within the NHS there is a good chance that you have been called upon to have a conversation around leadership.
Not necessarily about the mechanics of the leadership role but perhaps around how the coachee shows up and how they interact with other people.
Leadership presents itself throughout organisations and often those without a defined leadership role are taking responsibility for heading up certain initiatives or leading on certain aspects of the culture.
Tom has been coaching leaders for 15 years and has found that the main topic of conversation in the coaching room for leaders is other people and the relationship dynamics that the coachee is experiencing and perhaps struggling with.
Beyond their people issues, leaders often use coaching as a safe space to explore their concerns, their worries and their insecurities. Being in a leadership role is often a lonely place and being able to have confidential conversations with someone you trust is invaluable.
Join us in this episode of the podcast, the first of two leadership episodes, where we explore why we, as Transformational Coaches, might choose to feel confident in coaching those in leadership positions.

| Episode 110: Coaching Topics: Difficult Conversations - Why do we avoid them? | 30 May 2025 | 00:33:29 | |
Your coachees may tell you about a sticky situation or problematic people that they have in their lives, and talk about the stress that this is causing them. Often, one of the options that the coachee has to help resolve the issue is to have a conversation with someone else involved, but they may be avoiding this option. Understanding why a coachee might be choosing not to have what they might perceive as a difficult conversation is useful and may help you to facilitate the coachee's thinking. This may well result in them deciding to have a crucial conversation with someone that improves their situation. So in this episode we start to explore the topic of difficult conversations, discussing why people might not be having them, and looking at what might help your coachee to see them from a new perspective.
