| Episode 71: Coaching Approaches: Somatic Coaching | 30 Aug 2024 | 00:29:05 | |
Our bodies provide the perfect vessel in which to hold our stress and we will feel all sorts of indications that this is happening for us when we're in struggle. But our bodies also offer us some insights into what else is going on for us. Somatic markers provide us with information that we will often ignore when it would be wise to be mindful of them. While we might not choose to act on a gut feeling, noticing what we notice about our physiological sensations can become an important part of our decision making process, and can be so too for our coachees.
In this episode we take a look at somatic coaching, or embodied coaching, in which coachees are encouraged to go within, to the wisdom held in their own body.
Somatic coaching can be practised on its own, or as part of an integrative approach, to great effect.
Listen in to this episode of the Your Coaching Journey podcast for some ideas on how you could use somatic coaching with your coachees and how that might improve their outcomes for them.

| Episode 70: Supervision | 23 Aug 2024 | 00:32:00 | |
What is coaching supervision and why would I want to engage with it as a coach?
Coaching is an unregulated industry and, as we have discussed on previous episodes, it is down to coaching bodies and individual coaches to take responsibility for the professionalism and self-regulation of coaching as a whole.
Coaching supervision is one way of helping you as a coach to reflect on the quality of your coaching, your own professional development and your progress in the world of coaching. Coaching supervision is a protected space for confidential and supportive conversations about your role as a coach and your interactions with coachees.
Join us in this episode to find out more about supervision, why you might want to engage with it, and what the practice of receiving supervision entails.

| Episode 60: Coaching Topics – Change | 14 Jun 2024 | 00:17:58 | |
On our podcast we regularly explore the topics that coachees might bring to a coaching conversation. One such topic is 'change'; a huge topic that encompasses many different potential areas of a coachee's life.
Sometimes, the coaching might be focused on a change that is happening around the coachee or it might be a change that the coachee wants to bring about for themself.
Either way, everyone responds to change differently and there is a broad spectrum of how impactful and challenging change can be.
In this episode we explore how we might help our coachees to navigate change in their personal or professional lives, whether it's change they want to see or change that they feel is being done to them. We touch on Kübler Ross's model of change and also the work of Swedish psychologist, Claes Janssen who developed the Change House model to describe the different rooms that someone might enter as they move through a period of change.
Join us for an interesting exploration of how we might start to talk about change with our coachees.

| Episode 59: Coaching Tools – Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs | 07 Jun 2024 | 00:27:54 | |
"It's like Maslow's 'Hierarchy of Needs', isn't it?" is a rhetorical question often posed in discussions around human needs. Maslow's model of behaviour is one of the most oft-cited models of human psychology. Images of the pyramid that is usually used to illustrate Maslow's hierarchy are peppered throughout social media channels.
Very few people ever delve into Maslow's hierarchy, beyond a cursory glance at the model and a sage nod of the head, before they scroll onto a kitten being frightened by a cucumber, but the notion is worth exploring further.
That's exactly what we do in this episode of the podcast, as well as exploring an entirely different model of human needs, which may be just as valid. We'll also talk about how you might approach the model from a coaching perspective.
As we also often say on the podcast, all models are wrong, but some are useful, so have a listen and decide for yourself how useful Maslow's hierarchy of needs is within a coaching conversation.

| Episode 58: Coaching Approaches: Time To Think | 31 May 2024 | 00:24:30 | |
For us, coaching is all about allowing our coachees to have time to think about their situation, their desired outcomes and their ideas for achieving those outcomes.
We know that being truly present with our coachees and holding that space for them while they think to the end of their thoughts is invaluable. This is where their new thinking is generated.
'Time To Think' is also the name of a particular coaching approach devised by Nancy Kline that has some unique characteristics and a very specific structure when coaching individuals.
In this episode we explore what the 'Time to Think' approach looks like, what we see as the benefits of the approach and also what we perceive to be its limitations

| Episode 57: Challenging Coaching: How much should I charge for my coaching? | 24 May 2024 | 00:22:34 | |
"How much should I charge for my coaching?"
This is a common question that we hear from new coaches and sadly, there isn't a succinct answer. It can feel like a minefield when it comes to pricing, and we're all looking for that 'goldilocks' amount that feels right for us, and also is acceptable to the coachees that we are attracting to our coaching space.
We can't tell you what you should be charging for your coaching, but we can help you reach your own right answer? On this podcast we talk through the different elements involved, from overcoming a reluctance to charge anything, to getting to grips with the cost of providing a coaching service, and then gaining an understanding of the true value of your coaching.
Join us for an exploration of a coaching issue that we know many coaches find challenging.

| Episode 54: Coaching Tools – The Johari Window | 03 May 2024 | 00:22:06 | |
Coaching often revolves around helping someone to raise their self-awareness, and really start to understand their personality, their values, their patterns of behaviour, their emotional responses, their strengths, as well as their vulnerabilities and weaknesses.
Coaching is also commonly focused on the coachee's interactions with others, what they choose to share with those around them, how they are perceived by others, and how they navigate their relationships in an authentic way.
In this episode we explore a tool that might help us facilitate this exploration for our coachees. It is a model that supports coachees as they develop personal insight and become aware of how they are perceived.
Join us as we take a look through the Johari Window.

| Episode 53: Coaching Topics – Motivation | 26 Apr 2024 | 00:31:06 | |
On our podcast we regularly explore the topics that coachees might bring to a coaching conversation.
One such topic that shows up a lot in our coaching is motivation or, more specifically, a lack of it. Coachees are often asking how they can feel more motivated, or how we can motivate them.
What we often find is that those same coachees who are struggling with their motivation will provide us with evidence of actions that they do feel motivated to take.
Sometimes uncovering the motivation they say they're lacking is just a matter of increasing their awareness and developing their understanding of what's going on for them.
In this episode we journey through some of the psychological theories and frameworks around motivation and explore how they could be useful for our coachees, and also for us as coaches.

| Episode 52: Coaching Approaches: Using Metaphors In Coaching | 19 Apr 2024 | 00:30:01 | |
Metaphors are an aspect of language that most of us will happily use until the cows come home. However, because we are so used to building metaphor into our speech it passes us by, uncovered, and we are denied the lightbulb moments that might guide us if we were to wake up and smell the coffee.
In this episode, we serve up a way of plucking metaphors from a coachee's language and putting them under the microscope, thus adding colour to our coaching tapestry. This may allow our coachees to mine a rich vein of awareness that could have remained buried without this approach. Personal transformations will bloom, hurdles will turn to stepping stones, and new thinking will percolate as we shine a light on the metaphors within our coaching conversations.

| Episode 51: Challenging Coaching: The Kubler-Ross Change Curve | 12 Apr 2024 | 00:13:57 | |
We regularly see psychological and coaching models being shared on social media, in blogs and discussions, and sometimes the sharing sets our teeth on edge.
We've mentioned this before when we explored the myth of Ikigai, and in this episode, we'd like to air some thoughts on a model often shared on social media, Kübler-Ross Change Curve.
In this episode we would like to engage in a little mythbusting around where this model comes from, why it's unhelpful to call it the Kübler-Ross Change Curve, and under what circumstances talking about change in terms of curve may, or may not be useful.

| Episode 50: The Transformational Coaching Diploma | 05 Apr 2024 | 00:22:55 | |
We can't quite believe that we've arrived at the milestone of recording 50 episodes of the Your Coaching Journey podcast! We thought we might run out of things to say to one another after half a dozen, but here we are, still having great conversations about coaching almost a year on from recording our first episode.
We've loved every minute of it. More than that, we've loved hearing from you that you love it too.
As it's our 50th episode we thought we'd indulge in a little self-promotion, which we seldom do, so this week we're talking about how our Transformational Coaching Diploma programme came to exist, what makes it different to many coaching courses and what we love about running it.

| Episode 48: Coaching Topics – Finding Meaningful Purpose | 22 Mar 2024 | 00:24:33 | |
If you're a regular listener to our podcast you will have noticed that we regularly discuss how we might deal with different topics that show up in the coaching room. This week we discussed working with coachees around meaning and purpose.
Coachees may not always come to coaching asking for support on finding meaningful purpose, but often they'll talk about feeling stuck, feeling lost, or feeling as though they're in a bit of a rut. At these times a conversation around what their purpose is and what is meaningful to them can encourage them to generate some new thinking about what might add more meaningful purpose to their life.
You might well have had times in your own life when you've had similar feelings and struggled to find a way through that time. Coaching conversations provide the perfect opportunity to open up this deeper thinking for the coachee.
In this episode we explore the concepts of meaning, purpose, and meaningful purpose, and what elements might contribute to the notion of living a meaningful life.

| Episode 47: Coaching Tools – Journalling | 15 Mar 2024 | 00:25:26 | |
Whilst journalling isn't a tool that you would necessarily wish to use in the coaching room, it can still be a useful concept to introduce to your coachees. Well, Helen thinks so anyway. Tom isn't entirely convinced, but has his own ideas around when journalling might be useful. In this episode Helen shares some reflections on journaling and also describes her own experience of keeping a journal. She also introduces a journalling method that she would happily invite her coachees to try out.

| Episode 46: Coaching Approaches: Transformational Coaching | 08 Mar 2024 | 00:25:07 | |
In our journey through the different approaches to coaching, we'd like to introduce you to Transformational Coaching.
Transformational Coaching is a flexible and integrative approach that allows coaches to explore a variety of topics and concerns with their coachees and to be agile in the coaching room. This agility enables coaches to move smoothly between different ways of being with their coachees as required. The integrative nature of Transformational Coaching provides a variety of tools and techniques that have their roots in psychology, are often evidence backed and encourage coaches to create their own unique approach to coaching.
In this episode, we will share what Transformational Coaching means to us, what it involves, and why we offer this approach in our Doctors' Transformational Coaching Diploma.

| Episode 45: Challenging Coaching: Is Ikigai A Myth? | 01 Mar 2024 | 00:15:50 | |
We regularly see psychological and coaching models being shared on social media, in blogs and discussions, and sometimes the sharing sets our teeth on edge.
"What's the cause of this mild irritation?" you may ask.
Well we like to try to get our information sharing right and we carry out plenty of research around the subjects we talk about on our podcast. But we know that not everyone does the same. So when we know that information is being misrepresented or misinterpreted in some way, we have a slight reaction to it.
Ikigai is one of those models that has become a phenomenon online in a way that's not particularly helpful.
In this episode we would like to do a little mythbusting around Ikigai and help to ensure that you, as a coach, are sharing the right information with your clients. We will talk about the origins of the diagram, why it's not Ikigai, and what Ikigai actually is.

| Episode 43: Coaching Topics – The Inner Critic | 16 Feb 2024 | 00:32:57 | |
If you're a regular listener to our podcast you will have noticed that we regularly discuss how we might deal with different topics that show up in the coaching room.
We recognise that everyone will have experienced some negative thinking about themselves from time to time and that's just part of the human condition. For most people this can be a little annoying or frustrating, and doesn't cause too much of a problem for much of the time. But there are times when, for some coachees, the inner voice becomes louder and more persistent.
At times like these, this inner dialogue can become a barrier to a coachee's personal or professional growth and often has an adverse impact on their self esteem. This phenomenon is often termed the 'Inner Critic'.
In this episode we explore the concept of the Inner Critic; what it is, how we might spot it coming up for a coachee, and what tools and techniques might be useful in the coaching room to help to quieten this unhelpful voice and allow other parts of our coachees' inner dialogue to be show up more often and be more noticeable.

| Episode 42: Coaching Tools – The SCARF Model | 09 Feb 2024 | 00:32:06 | |
Following on from our episode about neuroscience in coaching in this episode we focus on the SCARF model, which has its origins in social neuroscience.
SCARF was developed as a model by leadership expert David Rock and helps us to focus our attention on an organising principle in the brain; to minimise threat and maximise reward. Rock's assertion is that this principle leads us to move away from threat and move towards reward. Furthermore Rock identifies five domains that produce either a threat or reward response in individuals within any social group,
Assisting a coachee in exploring their situation through this model can help them to gain new perspectives, understand themselves and their reactions better, modify their own thinking and behaviours, and understand the responses of others.

| Episode 68: Interview – Dr. Liz Donovan | 09 Aug 2024 | 00:32:39 | |
In this episode we are joined by the delightful Dr Liz Donovan who has had a stellar career as a paediatric consultant and neonatologist, as well as being the Director of Medical Education at University Hospital Southampton. Liz came out of retirement to return to Southampton to work on a very special project, supporting medics through a coaching programme.
The Doctors' Development Unit offers support to senior clinicians within the trust. A pool of consultants have been trained as coaches by us here at Your Coaching Journey and are making good use of their coaching skills in their work with their consultant colleagues.
Liz has been heading up the coaching consultant team at Southampton, and has been delighted with the results of the coaching that has been conducted there. An independent evaluation of the effectiveness of the coaching within the trust has recently been carried out. The evaluation revealed some remarkable findings in terms of the social return on the investment that has been made and the efficacy of the coaching.
Liz will be sharing some of the report's findings with us, along with her own reflections on the art of coaching.

| Episode 41: Coaching Approaches: Neuroscience in Coaching | 02 Feb 2024 | 00:25:53 | |
Firstly, just to be clear, we are not neuroscientists! However, we do know that having some awareness of key elements of neuroscience can help us to support our clients well.
In this episode we explore our understanding of the disciplines that underpin neuroscience and the complex nature of the interactions of a number of different elements of our physiological neural make-up. We take a look at how we might use some awareness of the brain and body's reactions to events and how we might conduct a little neuro-education with our coachee around the topic.
In this very brief overview of neuroscience, we provide a taster on the subject to whet your appetite so that you are inspired to explore the subject further.
We also share our thoughts on the very limited number of neuroscience research studies available to us involving coaches and what they might be telling us.

| Episode 40: Challenging Coaching: Do we have to have goals in coaching? | 26 Jan 2024 | 00:19:18 | |
Coaching is so often seen as an intervention that supports the achievement of goals, and in this podcast we would like to challenge this belief. We will explore the idea that, whilst coaching is often concerned with goals, there is some much richer territory available to us in the coaching room.
A great deal of coaching training tends to start with goals and helping move coachees towards them and organisations tend to have a focus on goal achievement when commissioning coaching. In the coaching room, the coachee may bring a goal to coaching and may want to be coached around creating a plan to achieve the goal, but we have an opportunity as coaches to explore the 'WHY?' that sits behind the goal .
Beyond this the coaching space will hopefully evolve into a transformative space where new thinking can happen about deeper aspects of the coachee's world.
If you think you need a goal to come to coaching you could be missing out on some powerful personal work. And if you're a coach who would like to help people make bigger changes in their life, listen in as we explore this topic and discuss where we think the power of coaching truly sits.

| Episode 38: Coaching Topics: Introversion | 12 Jan 2024 | 00:34:58 | |
It's not often that people come to coaching because they're an introvert, but it is an aspect of personality that can surface in a number of different ways, or sit behind some of the issues that coachees might want to tackle with you.
In this episode we explore what introversion is, how you might recognise an introverted client and what some of the challenges might be for your introverted coachees. We talk about how you might work with someone who has an introversion preference and even have some strategies for thriving as an introvert in the workplace.
Also, if you're an introvert, we will explain some of the reasons why you might have a headstart in becoming an excellent coach.

| Episode 37: Coaching Tools: The Gestalt Cycle of Experience | 05 Jan 2024 | 00:32:37 | |
Following on from our exploration of Gestalt coaching in our previous episode, in this podcast we explore one of the models that originates in Gestalt, the Cycle of Experience (CoE), in greater detail.
The CoE is a Gestalt model that illustrates how individuals move through their experience of a situation. The model incorporates different stages that people might move through in order to complete the cycle and move on to a different experience.
On this podcast we explore the CoE model and identify each of the different stages that someone could be at when they arrive in the coaching room. Having an awareness of the CoE helps coaches to meet coachees where they are and work with them at that stage of the cycle.
Increasing a coachee's own awareness of where they are in the CoE and inviting them to really take notice of what they are experiencing in the here and now of a coaching session can be really powerful.
The CoE is also useful in helping coachee's to understand why they might be 'stuck' at one of the stages of the cycle and struggling to move forward.
If you're interested in helping coachees to understand their situation better and to increase their awareness of how they are connecting with their world, the CoE model could be really useful. It will also help you to support your coachees in gaining an acceptance of who they are in the current moment and exploring how they might move forward towards completing the cycle of experience.

| Episode 36: Coaching Approaches: Gestalt Coaching | 29 Dec 2023 | 00:32:25 | |
On our transformational coaching diploma we explore many different approaches to coaching and the Gestalt approach is one of them. It is an approach that lends itself to working in a transformational way with the coachee and is very much about helping them to become more who they are. In being more who they are, the coachee can start to bring about the change they wish to see more easily. And if they bring about the change they would like to see in a way that is aligned with who they are, the coachee is likely to find that their life makes a lot more sense to them.
In this episode we explore what Gestalt Coaching is and when it is useful to use a Gestalt approach. We will also be taking a look at some of the Gestalt techniques that are used within the coaching room.

| Episode 33: A Coaching Demo | 08 Dec 2023 | 00:24:51 | |
If you've ever looked for demonstrations of coaching online you may have noticed that there aren't many particularly good ones out there.
When looking for great examples of coaching, the two of us are always looking to see exquisite attention and lots of lovely space. We're hoping to hear crisp open questions, accurate summarising and reflecting back and the coach resisting being directive. We'd like to observe the coachee being supported in making sense of their own world and generating some new thinking.
Tired of searching for the holy grail we thought we'd create our own demonstration and so, in this episode, we engaged in a genuine coaching session.
During the coaching Helen gave some thought to a dilemma that had been on her mind for some time. The conversation resulted in Helen making a decision, which she has now taken action on, allowing her to move towards her desired objective.
During the coaching session Tom utilises the TOM'S CODE model to guide the coaching process. This is the model that we introduce everyone to at the beginning of our Transformational Coaching Diploma training.
TOM'S CODE provides a framework to hang the coaching on. It's not meant to be prescriptive and, at times, the coach will flex their use of the model in order to respond to the coachee.
We train coaches to work in a transformational way, looking to bring about awareness, empowerment and autonomy. TOM'S CODE focuses on bringing about the change that the coachee wants to see.

| Episode 32: Coaching Topics: Do Relationships Belong in the Coaching Room? | 01 Dec 2023 | 00:31:32 | |
Some coaches are more comfortable with addressing relationship issues with coachees than others, but the topic is bound to come up eventually in the coaching room.
Whether it's managing a tricky relationship at work, or navigating our communication with those around us, relationships will surface in the coaching room and it's useful to think about how we will handle them as a coach.
We are all social creatures and none of us live in isolation. Our coachee's relationships are an enduring feature of their life journey and they are going to hit some bumps in the road. As coaches it is important that we recognise that being able to hold the space for coachees as they discuss their relationships is an essential part of our role in working holistically.
In this episode we discuss what coaches might choose to do when relationships are at the centre of a coaching conversation.

| Episode 67: Coaching Topics – Burnout | 02 Aug 2024 | 00:29:19 | |
On our podcast we regularly explore topics that coachees might bring to a coaching conversation.
One such topic is 'burnout' and as with many topics that arrive at the door of the transformational coach, this is an important topic that affects many members of the medical community.
Burnout is a complex phenomenon, and we might well be coaching individuals who are at different stages in the burnout journey. They may be feeling stressed and concerned about ending up burnt out; they may be at the point of almost burning out; or they may have already burnt out.
There is a place for coaching in all of these situations and in this podcast we begin to explore the concept of burnout, how it is defined and measured, and how we might go about supporting someone around their relationship with burnout.
Join us for a fascinating conversation about burnout and how coaching might provide a useful intervention for those who are experiencing the symptoms that arise at the different stages of burnout.

| Episode 31: Coaching Tools – The Parent – Adult – Child Model | 24 Nov 2023 | 00:30:17 | |
Following on from our last episode on Transactional Analysis, this episode focuses on the key model from the Transactional Analysis approach to coaching; the Parent – Adult – Child Model. This is a model that will help us, as coaches, to understand the ego states that our coachee might be entering into at certain times during interactions with others. It may also help us to talk to coachees about whether they are responding in an adult way to the here and now or are drawing on old, learned, patterns of response. In addition, using the Parent - Adult – Child model might allow coachees to gain a different perspective on the behaviour of those that they interact with.
In this episode we look at the model in more detail and discuss how and when you might introduce it your clients.

| Episode 30: Coaching Approach - Transactional Analysis | 17 Nov 2023 | 00:36:29 | |
Transactional Analysis is a psychological theory that can help us to understand and explore human interactions and relationships.
In this episode we explore, what it is, where it comes from, and how it can be a useful approach to use in the coaching room. We also share two models, The Parent - Adult - Child model, and the Drama Triangle, that might prove useful in the coaching room. Both models can be introduced to coachees to encourage them to reflect on their relationships and to allow them to gain new perspectives around the ways that their interactions with others play out.

Resilience is a favourite topic of Tom's. So much so, he has explored, researched, taught, and written about resilience for a number of years now. So, what better person to ask about how we might explore resilience, or a perceived lack of resilience, when our clients start discussing it in the coaching room? In this episode we explore the various forms that resilience might take; what it might look like; what the factors are that will be influencing the resilience of our coachees; and how we might help our coachees maintain or replenish their resilience through good times and bad. Tom will also be sharing his own TELEGRAM model of resilience with us.

| Episode 22: Coaching Tools: Conflict Style Matrix | 22 Sep 2023 | 00:25:00 | |
Whether we view tension within a work or social relationship as conflict, or just the other person being awkward, we will all have our own way of approaching these potentially difficult situations. In this episode we explore how you might help your coachees to understand their approach to difficult situations with others.
A great tool to use when discussing conflict styles with your coachees is the Conflict Styles Matrix, which stems from the work of Thomas and Kilmann.
We'll also look at how a coachee might flex their own conflict styles in different situations and how this might lead to them experiencing more positive outcomes. Resources: Find out more about the 5 conflict styles in our blogpost: https://www.yourcoachingjourney.com/understanding-conflict-styles/ Here's an illustration of where they sit in terms of cooperation and assertiveness:

| Episode 66: Coaching Tools – How do we use them in the coaching room without being directive? | 26 Jul 2024 | 00:23:22 | |
Here at Your Coaching Journey we believe that the primary role of a coach is to facilitate the coachee's own thinking around their situation, allowing them to gain new perspectives and consider their options for moving towards their desired outcome.
Coaching is about encouraging the coachee to find their own answers, rather than the coach providing them with them.
So how do we square the non-directive approach with the concept of the coach introducing coaching tools, models and exercises.
In this episode we explore the idea of being directive about the coaching process without being directive about the way that the coachee is thinking. We have no wish to advise the coachee about their situation, the options they have, the decision they might make, or the options they might take.
What we are interested in is deepening the pool of meaning for the coachee, widening their perspective and offering models and exercises that generate new thinking.
In this episode we discuss how we might go about achieving this fine balance of managing the coaching conversation, introducing the coachee to new concepts and remaining non-directive with regard to the content of the coaching conversation.
