SamSam Graves Really Loves Piping Plovers10 Oct 202400:36:26

SamSam Graves is a NYC-based artist, zine maker, and birder. In our conversation we touched on these aspects of her life. SamSam spoke passionately about Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) conservation.

You might be surprised to learn that Piping Plovers nest annually on Rockaway Beach in NYC!! However, subspecies C. m. melodus are listed an endangered species in New York State and classified as threatened by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service.

SamSam also shares her stance on birding ethics and a fascination with mousebirds.

Information about New York City’s Piping Plovers is available at NYC Plover Project, NYC.gov, NYC Parks, NYS DEC, and U.S. FWS.

The Queen Kingfisher with Marina Richie14 Dec 202300:47:44

Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher by Marina Richie was published in 2022. Earlier this year Georgia read the book and knew she had to speak with the author. Halcyon Journey is the best of nature writing. Each ingredient in the book is wonderful on its own but together make an awe-some read. The Belted Kingfisher, the female Belted Kingfisher, the kingfisher in Indigenous cultures, kingfishers around the world, friendship, community science, scientific contributions, Western watersheds, family ties and memory, urban streams, and a woman naturalist and her adventures. And the illustrations by Ram Papish are outstanding. Richie answers a listener's question during our conversation--thanks to Michelle S. We are sure you will discover other elements in Halcyon Journey.

Rodney Stotts, Caring for People and Birds through Falconry09 Aug 202300:37:13

Don't call Rodney Stotts a master falconer. He told me other people gave him the label. He focuses on relationships between birds and people. During our conversation, Rodney refused to choose a favorite bird. Every species and individual bird has special characteristics. He honors people in his life by naming birds after them. "Whenever I am missing one of them, I can take that bird and fly that bird, and it's just like we're together." Dippy's Dream, Rodney's sanctuary, is named for his mother. I'm grateful for the time Rodney took to share his path to urban wildlife conservation from "I need a check" to protecting and making places for wildlife.

Dr. Leo Douglas, Bird Ties that Connect Jamaica and West Africa11 May 202300:35:51

How do you disrupt the "great forgetting machine" that is colonialism? Biologist and zoologist Dr. Leo Douglas offers this observation among many: "The more we can encourage people to think about this history, it's the more we can bring a broader cross section of society into the conservation fold, and give them a wider variety of reasons why they should be concerned or interested or value the natural world." Dr. Douglas drops many insights in our conversation about the history of the bird-people connection in Jamaica and its roots in the West Africa via the transatlantic slave trade. Please listen and contribute to the discussion in the comments.

Leo Douglas is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Liberal Studies. He received his Ph.D., a Masters of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology, and an Advanced Environmental Policy Certificate from Columbia University. He also holds a Masters of Philosophy degree in Zoology from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica (source). You can follow him on Twitter @ leo_r_douglas.

Katie Leung Loves Raptors08 Dec 202200:25:23

Katie Leung's childhood interest in charismatic megafauna and predatory mammals and fish has evolved to include raptors like the Eastern Screech-Owl and the Osprey. Katie describes her previous work with raptors in New York City. She is effusive about her new job working on the Hudson River, a "beautiful, vast estuary".  I appreciate Katie's willingness to talk about balancing vigilance in light of anti-Asian hate and enjoying and working in the outdoors.

We are back with Season 2 of Your Bird Story, made possible with a Puffin Foundation grant!

Our guests in this episode, Adam Martinek (Inwood Hill Park Conservancy), Leslie Davol (Street Lab), and Heather Wolf have created ways and places for people in NYC to learn about birds through specifically developed bird programs. You don't have to be an "expert" to create high-quality bird programming. Knowing and loving a space, a desire to collaborate with others, and the drive to create a safe and welcoming community are recipes for wonderful bird education programs.

We dedicate this episode to a NYC-resident Barred Owl who people called “Barry.” The young owl was recently killed in Central Park when she was struck by a maintenance vehicle. Yard Birding, Part 108 Apr 202100:50:05

During the spring migration season of 2020, many more people were home to observe the sudden filling up of greenspaces with birds. Talk about a room with a view. From their bay window, Arindam and Atasi watched many species of migrants and residents using their yard. We appreciate Arindam's and Atasi's generosity with their time and stories.

A Black Forester Comes to Birding11 Feb 202100:42:00

You might be familiar with the saying, "you cannot see the forest for the trees." You are so focused on the details (the trees) that you lose sight of the big picture (the forest). In this two-part episode, we speak with Dr. Thomas Easley, a forester, who in community with Black birders and through the practice of birding slowly, came to see the smaller aspects of the forests (the birds) in which he works and the landscapes in which he lives.

Raptor14 Jan 202100:27:32

2021 has not begun auspiciously. However, we can take some comfort in the awe that birds bring to our lives. Coincidentally, one of our stories is about the majestic Bald Eagle, which is the national bird of the U.S. Charlie Bates spotted the eagle on a cross country trip. The first story in this episode is from Shawn King about the red-tailed hawk and other birds in the Tompkins Square Park - East River Park neighborhoods of NYC.

Jazz Odes to NYC Birds with Elijah Shiffer14 Mar 202400:36:59

Birds sing to "defend and impress" (All About Birds). Bird songs are good for soul, though this depends on the person listening, the species of bird, and the type of sound they are making (Dr. Eleanor Ratcliffe via Natural History Museum UK). New Yorker Elijah Shiffer composes jazz pieces to celebrate the birds he observes in the city. Shiffer is a saxophonist, a composer, a music critic, and a bird guide. Excerpts from several of the songs on Shiffer's new album, City Of Birds, Volume I, are included in this episode.

Window Strike Taxidermy with Emmett White08 Feb 202400:33:04

One way to communicate the violence of window strikes is through art. Emmett White entered Wunderkammer 2023, a taxidermy competition, with a sculpture of seven pigeons colliding with windows. In this episode, we talk with Emmett about the piece, his other less woeful taxidermy projects, and a healthy dose of live birds.

Pigeon Gyotaku with Molly Tenzer11 Jan 202400:23:44

How do we recognize and commemorate the life and death of wild creatures among us? Gyotaku is a Japanese ink printing method conventional used by fishermen to print their fish to verify species and size. NYC-based artist Molly Tenzer uses gyotaku to print the dead bodies of birds and mammals she encounters in the city. Tenzer expresses gratitude to Tape Hernandez for introducing her to the art of gyotaku. We saw Tenzer's work first hand at the 2023 Wunderkammer taxidermy competition.

Melissa Hafting Gives Back to the Birds12 Dec 202400:22:31

In this episode, I talk with Melissa Hafting about her birding routines and rituals. Hafting’s life is about “giving back to the birds for all they have done for us.” She is the keeper of the BC Rare Bird Alert and founder of the BC Young Birders Program. Entering birding, Hafting—a Black woman—experienced gatekeeping. This challenging experience motivated her to establish the BC Young Birders Program, a welcoming space in nature for BIPOC and the LGBTQ community. She is a biologist and has worked with the City of Richmond to install nest boxes for Tree Swallows and Purple Martins. She is also the author of Dare to Bird which she dedicated to her parents both of whom passed away before the publication of the book.
