See more at http://www.quietmind.yoga/resources Like anything, the more consistent your practice becomes, the more significant results you'll see: increased flexibility, strength, balance and equanimity of mind. Many of the advanced poses will come as a side effect of regular practice. Many of the day-to-day benefits of feeling less stressed and reactive will come as a side effect of regular practice. If we chase these goals directly it will likely lead to frustration and injury. Instead, we can focus on making it easy to have a consistent practice. Here are 5 things I've found to be helpful:

| 88: Instead of ‘How' To Do Poses, Consider This | 25 Oct 2022 | 00:21:27 | |
The Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training Mentorship & Certification is OPEN for a limited time now! Learn more and enroll at quietmind.yoga/ytt On the surface yoga is all about "how" to do things. Place your foot here, reach your arm there. Do this or that. This is all on the surface, the anamaya kosha, the physical body. What's really interesting about yoga is not just the how, but the when, where and why of the poses. Everything in yoga has an energetic effect, and real mastery of yoga practice is not just about knowing 'how' to do poses, but when, where and why. What are the effects of this pose and how does it relate to others. This is something we explore in the free Deepen Your Practice series, still available for a limited time with two bonus live sessions coming this week! | 87: Quantum Physics & Yoga | 17 Oct 2022 | 00:18:58
Click here to join the free live training: Deepen Your Yoga Practice One of my favorite topics to study outside of yoga is quantum physics. It's so fascinating and validates a lot of the ancient yoga philosophy with modern science about how the universe works. We know that everything in the universe (including us) is made up of atoms, but what are atoms made of? These are called subatomic particles, but the interesting thing is they only appear as particles (forms) when we observe them, otherwise they behave more like waves (potential energy). This is the like the relationship of parusha (spirit) and prakriti (form) in yoga philosophy. We are literally creating our reality based on what we put our attention on! This is why I say your intention is so important. Your intention determines your attention, and what you put your attention creates your feelings, your actions, your results and everything else in your life. More than time, money and energy, I believe your attention is your most valuable asset, because it is what leads to creating all three of those things, and everything else in our lives. This is why I started the free Deepen Your Yoga Practice series with setting an intention for the training. You can join the free training here. In this new episode of the Yoga Teacher Training podcast I share about all of the above and the fascinating ways quantum physics applies in yoga and in life. Enjoy! | 104: Rey Cardenas, Co-Founder of Practice Yoga in Austin, Texas | 04 Oct 2023 | 00:49:24
Whenever people ask me what studio to check out in Austin, Texas, I always recommend Practice Yoga on the East side. Rey Cardenas is the co-founder of Practice which recently celebrated it's 10 year anniversary. If you follow Rey or Practice on Instagram, you'll see he shares a lot about a unique take on philosophy from Rudolf Steiner, that I haven't seen from other yoga teachers. We talk about: - Rey's journey of co-founding a yoga studio in Austin, Texas, after facing challenges with his previous teaching position. Rey shared his experience of transitioning from being a professional poker player to becoming a yoga teacher and the process of finding a location for his studio. - The process of opening a yoga studio, including finding a vacant building, partnering with someone who had complementary skills, utilizing social media marketing, creating memes(!) and choosing a donation-based model. - Rey's process of finding a more balanced approach to yoga philosophy, moving away from an indulgent sort of philosophy towards a more grounded perspective that Rey found in Rudolf Steiner's work. - How to integrate different perspectives and practices into yoga teachings. They also explored the connection between Western and Eastern spirituality and the importance of awakening the chakras. - Rey gives a great introduction to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, including his embodiment system, and the importance of the thought realm in human freedom. They also discussed how these concepts can be integrated into yoga and are integrated into the teacher trainings at Practice Yoga in Austin. Join the FREE Live Workshop: Thrive Teaching Online at www.thriveteachingonline.com/workshop One of the most common questions I hear from yoga teachers is "how do i grow my classes?" Today I address the question of "what do you do when your class attendance is dropping." How do you show up when nobody shows up? I encourage you to think outside of the box of weekly drop in classes, so everything I share here will apply to classes, but also workshops, courses and other offers that I teach step by step inside of the Thrive Teaching Online coaching program. Topics Covered In This Episode 1 - Why this Bhagavad Gita quote is so relevant to your business and marketing: “You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of the work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward, nor should you long for inaction.” 2 - The common mistake of comparing your internal experience to someone else external results. Comparing your internal thought process and behind the scenes to their likes, comments, views and shares without knowing how they got to those results. 3 - Why so many teachers fall into the "Homer Simpson With A Shotgun" method of marketing 4 - Why you can't hide it if you start marketing from desperation.
| 80: Why Your Yoga Business Is Struggling To Survive | 19 Apr 2022 | 00:15:50 | |
Signup for the FREE workshop: Thrive Teaching Online at thriveteachingonline.com/workshop In 2016, after 5 years of yoga certifications, I realized something was missing. I had a ton of personal and spiritual growth, but almost no material or financial growth. I moved around Austin from one guest room to another until I found a place I wanted to live with awesome roommates. When I asked how much it cost to live there I said "oh wow, nevermind, I wont be able to afford that." The cost was $500 a month. With all bills and food included. I started to question the path I was on. How could I serve my students if I can't even pay my bills? So instead of taking another yoga training, I took a business training. For six years I studied with some of the best marketing, sales and business teachers in the world. This was not separate from my spiritual path at all. It was the best thing I could have done for my personal growth. The teachers I resonated with most lived yogic principles like ahimsa and aparigraha. They also happened to be the most successful ones. Since then, I've become more confident, focused, and more myself than ever before. As a reflection of my internal growth, my business has seen massive growth too. After 350k+ podcast downloads and creating a six figure business doing only work I love, I want to give back. If you want to grow your yoga business and see similar results, then I created something you'll love. It's a free workshop called Thrive Teaching Online on Tuesday April 26th at 2pm CST. I'm opening this workshop to the public, and offering 1-1 mentoring to a few dedicated teachers. This is for you if you want to increase your income, grow your audience and transition to only doing work you love. My goal is to help you achieve those results and save years of trial, error, overwhelm and frustration. | 79: Use Vedic Astrology To Overcome Doubt And Stand Out In Your Teaching | 13 Feb 2022 | 00:22:58
As yoga teachers we all experience doubts, fears, setbacks and obstacles. That is unavoidable, and the more you teach, the more you'll experience these challenges. The question is not how to prevent them, but how to navigate them when they arise. Today I'll share how to use Vedic Astrology, the ancient sister science of yoga to better understand your strengths, weaknesses and opportunities as a teacher. I'll share examples of how I've used this as well as teachers in the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training, so that you can better live in alignment and integrity with your unique gifts and purpose. | 76: The Most Important Thing To Focus On When Teaching | 19 Jan 2022 | 00:33:44
As teachers it can be overwhelming to know what to focus on. There are so many amazing aspects to yoga from the anatomy to philosophy to cueing that it can be easy to want to include it ALL in every class. Unfortunately, if you try to say everything in a class, you end up saying nothing. And if you never know what to focus on when teaching your classes and your own energy will become scattered, unfocused and you'll eventually get burned out and discouraged from teaching. You might even just decide to quit teaching all together. So what do you focus on instead? It's simpler and more obvious than you might think, but I've been to plenty of classes where the teacher forgets to do this, and you may have too. It's an easy mistake to make, but it's also a simple mistake to avoid. I'll share how in today's episode! Kate Lombardo's influence as a yoga instructor spans the globe, touching tens of thousands of students internationally. For almost a decade, Kate has been teaching and leading training programs through her award-winning yoga studios before expanding virtually through YogaRenew-- the world's leading online yoga teacher training program. She is an expert in vinyasa yoga sequencing and balances that with teaching yin classes, plus she can talk about the business of yoga all day long. She answers to many titles-- Yoga Director, CEO, CMO, Speak, Leader, Writer-- but most importantly... Mama. Kate primarily teaches online and in Hoboken, NJ where she lives with her husband and two children. 0:00 Kate and Jeremy had a conversation about Kate's role as the Yoga Director and CMO of Yoga Renew, an online Yoga Teacher training program. They discussed Kate's expertise in sequencing and helping yoga teachers with their business, as well as the opportunities and shifts in the yoga industry due to the pandemic. 5:03: Kate and Jeremy discussed the growth and reimagining of yoga teacher training and teaching, with Kate expressing her opinion that there is still room for more yoga teachers and trainings worldwide, especially in areas where yoga is not yet accessible. They also talked about the evolution of the path for new teachers, highlighting the importance of social media and online platforms in connecting with potential students and growing as a teacher. 9:46 Kate and Jeremy discuss the importance of using social media, specifically Instagram, to connect with people and build relationships in the yoga community. They emphasize the value of authenticity, serving others, and focusing on relationship building rather than solely on follower count or algorithm tricks. 14:21 Jeremy and Kate discussed the importance of authenticity and real connections on social media and in online courses. They also advised starting with organic marketing before investing in paid advertising to ensure that the audience is interested and engaged. 19:27 Kate and Jeremy discuss the effectiveness of running ads for free offerings rather than paid products. They emphasize the importance of building relationships through email marketing and learning about business in order to create a successful career as a yoga teacher. 23:52 Kate and Jeremy discussed the process of transitioning to full-time yoga teaching. They emphasized the importance of having a realistic understanding of financial needs, starting with a side job, gradually building up teaching opportunities, and acquiring business skills to eventually make the shift to teaching yoga full-time. 28:09 Kate and Jeremy discuss the importance of finding one's area of expertise as a yoga teacher and the value of deepening knowledge and experience in that specific area. They emphasize the need to teach what one has personally embodied and caution against teaching topics or poses that one has not fully experienced or understood. 36:26 Jeremy and Kate discussed the importance of being knowledgeable in certain areas as yoga teachers, while also acknowledging their limitations and being willing to seek help and resources when needed. They also expressed their interest in exploring new topics such as sequencing and sound healing, and the potential for collaboration and teamwork in their yoga businesses. - If you enjoy this podcast leave a review and share with a friend - Join the waitlist for the next Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt - Practice with me at http://www.quietmind.yoga - Follow me on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/quietmind.yoga - Follow my work in Vedic Astrology at http://www.quietmindastrology.com Keywords: spirituality, yoga philosophy, asana practice, meditation techniques, anatomy and physiology, pranayama (breathing techniques), teaching methodology, yoga history, adjustments and modifications, Sanskrit, chakras and energy centers
| 64: Why I Don't Recommend Teaching "Peak Poses" | 21 Jul 2021 | 00:18:16 | |
Today's episode comes from a discussion with a student in the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training about "Peak Poses." This is a common way of teaching that involves building up to an intermediate or advanced pose within a class. There are many pros and cons to consider with this and I'll share what I found after experimenting with this approach many times over the years and encourage you to build on my experience to find what works best for you. | 63 Asana: What Are We Doing When We Practice Postures? | 14 Jul 2021 | 00:31:37
Get the free guide of essential cues at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cues Modern life pulls our energy in a million directions. Overwhelm, burn out, feeling distracted and scattered are normal side effects of living our modern fast paced, mostly online lives. I believe yoga and particularly asana practice has become so popular in recent years not because of the common perception that people are focused on their outward appearance, but because asana is an invitation away from the noise into the clear, calm center underneath all the noise. In this episode I share a personal experience of realizing just how ungrounded I was and just how much asana could be the thing to help get me back 'down to earth' and grounded. I'll share three things that asana provides that is unlike nearly any other physical movement or practice and why it can be the perfect remedy to our modern lifestyles. I'll share about integrating the ancient source texts of yoga with modern neuroscience and understanding of trauma informed embodiment practices. This helps make asana far more than just a performance of flexibility, but an opportunity to be centered and embodied moment to moment. | 62: Use The Poses To Get Into Your Body, Rather Than Using Your Body To Get Into The Poses | 11 Jul 2021 | 00:21:50
Why do you practice postures? Today and over the next 3 episodes let's explore what it really is that we are doing when we do yoga. Is it to reach a goal of flexibility? Is it to be present in the body? Is it to tune out from life for an hour in a day? What if all perspectives can be valid and appropriate and the real aim is to develop your inner authority that knows which perspective is in alignment for you? I'll share insights from all the way back at my very first yoga class and how that continues to shape my practice and perspective today, as well as thoughts from my mentors, historical teachers, the source texts of yoga and modern science. | 59: 9 Types Of Cues To Include In Every Class | 15 May 2021 | 00:20:45
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence A little challenge I’ve had for myself over the years is to figure how to say as much as possible about a pose in as few words as possible - while also speaking to all levels of students and giving them options so the class feels personalized - while also integrating anatomy and philosophy lessons that are relevant - while giving lots of space for the student to have their own experience and listen to their body’s needs. There are infinite ways to cue a pose and I encourage you to find your own and I’ve found dozens of cues and really efficient phrases that do all of the above - distilling 10 years of trial and error as a teacher into 2 1/2 hr workshop I’m teaching in the Cue With Confidence Workshop. Today I’ll share how to frame this through 9 types of cues that great teachers include in every class. This is not something that is traditionally taught in teacher trainings, but something I have observered from 12 years of practice and 10 years of teaching. Listen in to hear about these cues and how they can significantly improve the quality of your classes and the experience of your students! We all know to cue with the breath. Inhale, do x. Exhale, do y. This is a great foundation but there are 8 other types of cues that you can easily include in every class to give students a much more well-rounded experience while integrating all aspects of yoga beyond just the poses. I'll teach you when, why and how to include all 9 types of cues, no matter what style of yoga you teach. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/quietmind.yoga Thanks for listening! | 58: Why Cueing Is The Most Important Skill of Teaching | 04 May 2021 | 00:17:13
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence Nearly all yoga teaching is happening online right now. Teaching online creates a lot of unique challenges: Cueing is the most important skill for yoga teachers to develop, especially if you're teaching online, and this workshop will address all of these needs. With these skills you can build a thriving online yoga community and livelihood. In the book "The One Thing" they ask the question "What's the One Thing I can do / such that by doing it / everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" - in teaching yoga I believe the one thing you can focus on that makes everything significantly better is cueing. A new student coming to your class can know within minutes wether you they would come back or not. They know because of your cues. An experienced student will keep coming back because your cues add insight and depth to their practice. As a teacher, nearly every word you say from the beginning to the end of class is a cue that is either clear or unclear. Clarifying or confusing. So how do we define what a cue is? Have you noticed there are different types of cues? What are some examples of effective vs ineffective cues? I'll share in today's episode. | 56: 6 Cueing Mistakes That New Teachers Make | 22 Apr 2021 | 00:22:25
What you say matters. Especailly as a yoga teacher, every word counts. Sometimes just the smallest variation of how you say something can completely change your student’s experience of what you said. A phrase that you feel is helpful could come accross as unclear, confusing or potentially even triggering of past trauma. Sometimes we say too much or too little. With experience and practice we can learn to say just the right thing at just the right time. Today I’ll share some of the most common mistakes that new teachers make, including:
I’ll share my suggestions of what to do instead on the next episode. For now, take some time to just sit with these topics and notice them in classes you teach and attend. What woudl you do differently and why? This is a great way to practice svadyaya (self study), part of the 8 Limbs of Yoga. Come to your own conclusions, then I’ll share mine on the next episode. | 101: Yoga Therapist Kristine Weber Responds to Dr. Andrew Huberman | 20 Aug 2023 | 00:39:15
Kristine Weber, MA, C-IAYT, eRYT500 is a leading world authority on the neuroscientific benefits of slow, mindful movement and an advocate for the use of these practices as a solution to the healthcare crisis. She is leading the charge to get slow, mindful practices to people who desperately need them through her Subtle® Yoga Revolution series of online courses and trainings for yoga teachers – which have been praised by thousands all over the world. She recently wrote a great article in response to Dr Andrew Huberman and his Huberman Labs podcast. I invited her on to chat about it. Here's how her blog starts: “Dr. Huberman I’d love to talk to you about this [breathing] as a yoga therapist and armchair neuroscience geek who has spent more than a decade curating the research. I love your work and I realize scientific inquiry is by its very nature reductive. But you have taken an intricate and sophisticated ancient system that confers self-regulation – ethics + asana + pranayama + meditation – and reduced it to “box breathing” here. This is deeply problematic for a number of reasons. Self-regulation via yoga practices is basically achieved in four steps..." Read her blog here: https://subtleyoga.com/dear-dr-huberman/ We discuss this in depth in this episode. 7:30 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the reductive default of defining yoga as solely physical postures (asana) and emphasized the importance of incorporating the ethical principles (yamas and niyamas) of yoga for self-regulation and moral cognition. They expressed interest in exploring the intersection of neuroscience and these ethical concepts in future conversations 16:08 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the importance of practicing the principles of yoga in a progressive manner, even though they don't have to be followed strictly in order. They also touched on the benefits of memorizing and teaching the yamas and niyamas, as well as the potential energetic and physiological effects of yoga postures beyond just stretching and strengthening. 26:30 Kristine and Jeremy discussed the emerging scientific understanding of the biofield and its connection to the subtle body in yoga. They explored research on the morphogenic field, physical correlates of the chakras, and the potential for deeper understanding of the mind-body connection through studying the biofield. 35:18 Kristine and Jeremy discuss the potential intersection of science, quantum physics, and the biofield in relation to yoga and meditation. They emphasize the importance of respecting the rich tradition of yoga and its vastness, while cautioning against oversimplifying practices like pranayama. 43:18 Jeremy and Kristine discussed the importance of understanding that not every breathing practice is suitable for everyone, as our breath is influenced by our personal history and survival patterns. They also emphasized the need for repetition over time to bring about lasting changes in traits and the importance of exploring and studying Pranayama for a deeper understanding of breathwork. What makes a YTT stand out? Why would you pick one over another? With 17+ years in wellness I have learned what makes an exceptional Teacher Training and that is why I initially created the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training in 2019. Today I share some of my absolute favorite and most essential insights from the whole 200 hour program - from anatomy, to philosophy to ayurveda to trauma informed teaching and everything in between. I cover a lot of ground and share how I weave it into classes and why it is so essential that we as teachers include all of these core competencies in our teachers so we can best serve each student we work with. I share about my lineage of teachers from Krishnamacharya to the source texts of 1750s BCE to modern exercise science and kinesiology. It all weaves together in the beautiful space of practicing yoga and meditation. I share a quote from a QYTT Grad Patricia about why there can never be “too many yoga teachers” and why there has never been a better time to become a teacher than right now. I also touch on the business of teaching as I've learned from the lead sales training for Tony Robbins and other great teachers outside of the yoga realm. The QYTT starts next week!
