293 - Intentional Communication and Connection on Social Media 04 Dec 202500:29:20

If you're a teacher or business owner and showing up on social media, this one's for you.

It can be really hard to create content and share ourselves on social media when cancellation is a real threat. How do we show up authentically? When we make stuff, who are we speaking to, and why? What are our responsibilities to ourselves and others?

We explore these questions, and more.

193 - From Yoga to Kettlebells, and Creating Space for Growth Along the Way with Serenity Messner17 Mar 202301:16:52

Serenity Messner never thought she’d find her way to strength training, much less own her own gym. Lifting weights feels like the direct opposite of Yoga, but the two practices compliment each other, and both exist to make your life outside of the classroom and outside of the gym better. In this conversation with Serenity, we talk about what it’s like to be a beginner at something, enjoying the lifelong journey of fitness, Serenity’s journey to finding kettlebells, dealing with impostor syndrome, building community through the gym, and how Serenity allows herself to be held and she leads and holds up so many people.

192 - Listening to What Your Pain Is Telling You11 Mar 202300:27:33

I’ve been thinking about wellness lately. As someone who works within the wellness “industry” there is so much to discuss around what it means to be well. You might know, I’ve been dealing with a lot of back pain in recent months, and it’s been a lesson in listening to my body, to what my pain is trying to tell me. If living Yoga Strong is all about the practice of paying attention, how have I been paying attention to my own body and self, the stress and the pain, and everything else wrapped up in that? How can we all find stillness listen to our pain, in order to find out what it is our bodies may want or need that we haven’t been giving voice to. How can we listen, so that we can live our most well lives?

191 - Trust Built Through Listening03 Mar 202300:25:52

I have an offer for you. What if you approached your students without an ask? In situations where someone is walking out during shavasana or following their own flow during your class, instead of looking for an explanation, you talked to your student and simply listened to their experience. When you make people feel seen without demanding anything from them, answers or otherwise, when you listen to their experience, watch how trust grows. We can create space for ourselves, for our students, for the people all around us in and outside of the yoga studio when we prioritize listening. You might be surprised what is built in that space.

190 - Finding Home Within Yourself with Kelly Smith06 Feb 202300:45:24

You’ve heard me say it a lot, we are so much more than just one thing. And on the journey we’re all on to uncover what it means to be human and to find home within ourselves, we have to slow down. We can’t find connection, with others or ourselves, going a million miles a minute. There is SO much contained in your “true” self, and in order to be seen you have to show up as the truest, most authentic version of you. When you do, you embody a power that is brave and beautiful, and give the people around you to do the same.

Kelly Smith and I talk about finding balance, breaking through self-doubt, building awareness, Yoga Nidra and the 5 koshas, becoming a caretaker, and conscious introspection.

189 - You Don't Need To Know Everything to Begin28 Jan 202300:27:32

There is no single definition of what yoga is, there is no “right” way to practice, and there is no “wrong” way to be a teacher. Yoga is a practice with real depth and breadth, one that we could truly study for our entire lives and still have more to learn. And if there’s one thing I know to be true in this life, it’s that there is more than one way to be right. So if you, as a teacher, or even as a student, are facing impostor syndrome or are afraid of showing up, I want you to know that you can. You do belong in the room, because your voice is important and the way you show up will impact lives more than you could possibly imagine. We need you. I hope to see you in the room.

188 - Bringing Your Passions to Life with Rachel Brooks19 Jan 202301:10:54

There’s something beautiful, especially as a business owner and entrepreneur myself, about watching another business owner out there owning it, finding success, and redefining who yoga and movement is for (and thats means everyone). Rachel Brooks was a bartender and worked in the service industry for 18 years. After finding yoga, she wanted to create a space for others with late-night and non-traditional schedules to find a place they could practice, too. There is an extraordinary amount of time, and effort, and passion it takes to bring your passions to fruition, and Rachel has worked her ass of to build what she has. What an accomplishment.

187 - Finding Freedom to Flow13 Jan 202300:22:46

I did something recently for the very first time—I walked out of a yoga class. And I remember the first time it happened in a class I was teaching, too. We might jump to conclusions and start telling ourselves stories of all the things we’re doing “wrong” or how we might be “failing,” but truly, it’s never about us. When I left, it was because of the low-back pain I’ve been dealing with, not how the class was being taught. And wherever, however our students arrive to class, it’s about them. As teachers, we are here to support and guide our students, in the ways that are best for them. It isn’t about us. It’s about them, and helping them find the freedom to flow.

186 - An Intention to Trust06 Jan 202300:25:28

It’s a brand new year, and everyone is talking about resolutions and intentions for 2023. I wanted to share a little bit about a word that has been coming up for me, one that I’m choosing to focus on this year: trust. To me, “trust” is a reminder to step into my joy. It’s the opposite of fear and anxiety. And even when the stress of being a business owner and a mother and a provider for my family threatens to overtake me, I remember to trust the process, and trust in myself. The world is so many things, and YOU are so many things. In each of lies both form and flow, the capability to feel stressed about everything, but to be just as stoked about it all. This year, I’m trusting that dichotomy, I’m trusting the universe, and I’m trusting myself.

185 - Embodying the Yoga Strong Spirit30 Dec 202200:51:49

This podcast is called Yoga Strong—but what does it mean to BE yoga strong, to fully embody what that means? If yoga is the practice of paying attention, what are we paying attention to?

Paying attention is all about presence, how we show up in the world and bringing all of us wherever we go. We carry the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of who we are in every room we walk into, and those aspects deserve to be seen. Showing up is a true practice, and one we’ll be working on for our entire lives. You can start here, now. We can go out into the world and be brave.

184 - Giving Yourself to the Experience with Nick Harris02 Dec 202201:31:23

Today’s guest is a pretty damn special person that I am lucky enough to have met through Instagram, and you need to know him, too. Nick Harris is here to bring positivity through the world. He doesn’t look like your traditional yoga teacher, and that’s what makes him so relatable and influential to the youth he mentors. Nick leads by example in everything he does, always showing up unapologetically, and always giving himself to the experience in front of him.

If you’ve ever felt that you weren’t enough, or that you’re too much, this episode is for you. There are times when I catch myself feeling one way or the other, but it has never helped my joy. Focusing on what doesn’t exist only takes away from my happiness and leaves me feeling stuck. Here is what I know is true: you are neither too little, nor too much. Focus on what IS, and what you ARE, and your joy will have the space to flourish and spread to everything and everyone around you. Your joy is so needed.

182 - A Detour From Traditional Yoga with Cecily Milne18 Nov 202201:24:48

Cecily Milne is a disruptor of movement within the yoga community. Becoming a teacher of yoga doesn’t begin at your 200 hour trainings, you begin when you show up in the room. And when you show up in the room, you’ll find it filled with different people who all experience different things; it’s a place full of in-betweens. Traditional asana practice can often become a rigid structure without any room for rest, asking questions, and creativity. It’s time we took a detour. That’s what Cecily is here to do. Yoga should be nourishment, not punishment.

This is for the yoga teachers: those already teaching, and those who feel the call, but may be too afraid to start. If you’re not sure if you belong, let me assure you right now, you do. You don’t have to know everything, and you certainly don’t have to be the best, you just have to start. You’re going to to the damn thing, even if you’re afraid. 179 - Treat Yourself Like a Holy Guest27 Oct 202200:20:41

In all experiences, good and “bad,” there is something to be learned. What if, even in those harder times, we treated the moment as if it was a Holy guest? And what if, especially in those times, we treated ourselves as a Holy guest? Holiness is something that takes your breath away, inspires awe, makes you pause… So what if that Holy thing was you? How would you treat yourself, and how would you view your circumstances?

And as much as making friends is difficult for you, it is just as hard for everyone else, so why not make the first move? 177 - Exploring our Human Design with Rocky Heron14 Oct 202201:51:13

Today I am joined by Rocky Heron to talk about something near and dear to him, and something I hope you’ll find a little curiosity for within yourself—Human Design. Rocky turned to Human Design as a sort of instruction manual on how to be, and it’s a tool we should all be using to better understand ourselves and how best to operate within our own designs. Human design is not just “woo,” but where science and the metaphysical overlap. I hope you love this episode as much as I did.

176 - Celebrate Your Wins07 Oct 202200:19:43

In so much of life, we could lean into the scarcity of things, the feelings of not enough-ness and lack… or we can choose abundance. We can find the good, find the wins, and celebrate that. Because I have, and I’m sure you have too, leaned into the “I’m not enough” feelings, and it’s just not productive. So what happens instead when we decide we are winners, right from the beginning? You are not an after thought in your story. You deserve to win. Why not choose to believe you already have?

175 - The Symbiosis of Yoga and Strength Training 29 Sep 202200:38:08

This podcast is called Yoga Strong for a reason. Strength training is made better by incorporating yoga, just as yoga is made better when we work on building strength. All movement has inherent risk of injury, but when we combine flexibility and strength, we protect our bodies for years to come, whatever comes our way. It’s a perfect symbiotic relationship. Each is improved by incorporating the other. And the mental feeling, that feeling of power we experience when we are strong, competent, and body aware? That’s Yoga Strong.

174 - The 5 Things I Learned From Running A Studio With a Team22 Sep 202200:23:34

There are infinite opportunities to learn from the things we do in this life, but today I wanted to share just 5 things I have learned from running a studio with a team. I think about yoga and leadership a lot, about the intersection and interplay between the two. Because any time you put yourself at the front of a class to teach and to share, you are a leader. Whether you are a yoga teacher or not, you are a leader in some part of your life. And in that leadership, there is so much that to be learned.

Hey, you. Happy birthday! Maybe it isn’t the actual day you were born but here’s something wonderful: every day you wake up, you are a brand new person. 172 - Finding the Flow in Form While Sequencing01 Sep 202200:31:21

The waves of the ocean ebb and flow in a continual cycle, does your sequencing do the same? Look at the ratio of movement within your sequences. Are the arms always up, legs always bent, do things generally stay the same? I think you can do more. Yes, there is form, but do not forget about the flow. Find that push and pull, just like the ocean.

171 - In Defense of People Pleasing26 Aug 202200:27:13

I have a proposition for you: let’s take the victimhood out of people pleasing. Wanting to please someone isn’t a bad thing; it’s the reason we are all here today. Because someone wanted to please a lover. Because a mother wanted to please her baby. Because I want to please you, for you to feel pleasure when you listen to this podcast. Of course we shouldn’t please others at the expense of ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t aim to please. Life exists in the middle of two extremes. Let’s play there.

170 - Developing My Own Spirituality18 Aug 202200:28:34

The practice of paying attention can show up in the way we regard our bodies, but it is so much more than that. One of the reasons I felt so drawn to yoga was that yoga holds a lot of space for people with varying spiritualities, people who believe a lot of different things, and all are united by the practice.

Through the past 7 years as I have left the church I once belonged to, I have begun to develop my own, independent spirituality, a spirituality no longer bound by any one thing. Instead, it gives me freedom. I think having a spiritual practice is so important, and it’s even more important for us to develop it on our own. Here is a conversation on what mine looks like, and how it came to be.

169 - The Money Behind the Scenes of Business12 Aug 202200:23:44

Money is a lot like sex: no one talks about it, but it’s something we all experience and have a whole lot to gain by opening up about it. If I can talk about sex over on Sexy Sunday, then I can talk about money, too.

I wanted to share all of the important details you have to think about when dreaming and scheming about starting an online business. It doesn’t have to be scary. There are some easy, actionable steps you can take now to protect yourself as you begin your online business journey.

Money is more than just bank accounts and taxes, too. There’s a mindset piece that needs to be talked about. Love it or hate it, we live in a world where we need money to live, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, either.

168 - Cultivating Community and Honesty at the Studio with Jamie King28 Jul 202201:31:30

My guest today is Jamie King, founder and owner of Flex & Flow, whose leadership has been such a joy and inspiration to watch as the past few years of the pandemic have shifted things within the in-person yoga studio community.

There is so much to learn in failure, disappointment, and struggle. When we give ourselves permission not to be perfect or even permission to fail, we open up a way for ourselves to enjoy the process. Even when the process is messy or awkward or uncomfortable.

Once we start enjoying the process, then we begin to open up about it in an honest way. We can be imperfect and authentic, and that’s how real connection is made. That’s how we build a yoga community based on wellness and inclusion. That’s the future of yoga and in-person studios. Jamie is leading the way.

167 - Give Yourself Permission 22 Jul 202200:10:54

I’m going to get a little hippie for a moment, so bear with me. Today I’m sharing with you a practice that changes my life, the practice of giving myself permission. I give myself permission—to do, to be, to feel whatever it is I need in that moment. I say it out loud, because when I slow down and think those things out loud, it allows me to arrive into these moments of anxiety, or heart ache, or stress, or even joy with clear understanding. What do you need to allow yourself that moment to slow down? What do you need to do to take care of you? Give yourself permission for it.

166 - Why I Teach Yoga15 Jul 202200:10:46

Strength looks like so many different things, and it’s different every day. When I found yoga, I found my own power, that combination between strength and grace. That’s why I show up. I hope you take a moment to reflect on why you choose to show up in the places you are showing up, whether it’s what you do for work, or for play, or for love.

165 - How I Found My Superpower07 Jul 202200:09:22

I wanted to tell a story about the feeling I used to get when I felt under-appreciated and unacknowledged. I knew I had a simple choice: to stay feeling hurt, or to be the person who always catches others in the moments they’re at their best. I made it my superpower.

If you’re feeling it, chances are that someone else is too. And what if, instead of waiting around for someone to give something to you, you go out there and give it to everyone else? Just wait and see what you get in return. Fill the lack that you feel, and change someone’s day for the better.

164 - My Secret to Making Progress02 Jul 202200:08:51

Progress is often made in small, continual steps, rather than large overnight transformations. Maybe that makes doing the thing fee; daunting, but I think it’s perfectly designed. Because—like in yoga—the magic is in the transition. The magic is contained in the path forward, how we leap, how we keep on moving.

So have the big vision. Have the amazing, powerful dreams for yourself, but don’t let it burn you out. Find that magic. Revel in it.

280 - How to Start Teaching Yoga12 Jun 202500:37:54

Finding your audience, your confidence, and your voice as a yoga teacher is a process. It means a whole lot of learning--how to lead a room, how to sequence well, how to trust the practice and ourselves, and so much more. And it means doing a lot of stuff wrong so we can learn to do stuff right.

Today we're gonna talk about how to begin.

163 - The Synthesis of Yoga and Strength Training with Jenni Rawlings23 Jun 202201:20:06

As a yoga teacher (or maybe more accurately, a yoga suggester) how do we decide between teaching what our students need versus what we want to share? Jenni’s answer is everything: there is room for both. Find what resonates, and hold space for the fact there is no “right” way to do anything.

And what resonates with Jenni? The synthesis of yoga and strength training. Yoga is expansive; it is so many things wrapped into one, constantly evolving. There is a true mind-body connection and we can deepen that connection and find empowerment within by focusing on our strength. Yes, the health benefits of strength training are myriad, but getting stronger can deepen your personal yoga practice and open new doors. You can redefine yoga, and you can be more that one thing, too.

162 - Be Where Your Feet Are16 Jun 202200:15:46

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase, “Be where your feet are,” but what does that mean, and how do we do it? Yes, it’s easy to say these pretty words, but when we actually FEEL them… everything changes. And if we are so small in this world and infinite universe, then why the hell not? Why not do all the things we’ve dreamed of because there is truly no rush, because there is room for all of us.

So let’s talk about how to be where our feet are. Let’s talk about how to have that softening and presence found in the small moments. Because thats where life is truly lived: the small moments.

161 - Welcome to Sexy Sunday09 Jun 202200:12:55

If you’ve been a listener to this podcast for some time, you’ll know about the Let’s Talk About Sex episodes I sometimes publish with my friend, Taylor. I put a pause on that segment because something very special has been in the works, and I am thrilled to finally share it with all of you.

I want to introduce you to my new podcast, Sexy Sunday with Bonnie. Sexy Sunday (named after my weekly poetry prompts) was born out of my own bravery to do the thing, to approach sex with curiosity and joy. It exists to show you—and me—that we are not alone, that when we talk about sex, we normalize our own experiences and share a little more of what it means to be human.

I am so excited to embark on this journey with you.

160 - Learn to Love the Process02 Jun 202200:09:20

My oldest recently asked me, in regards to his running, “If I’m not going to be the best, why do it?” I’m sure that’s something we’ve all felt at one point or other. If you feel the same way now, there are a few questions I think you should ask yourself:

What is the story you are telling yourself?

Can you learn to love the process?

Can you allow yourself to be surprised at the places the journey takes you?

Because loving the process brings us joy, and that joy is contagious. It is a force powerful enough to move mountains. It is a joy I hope you all get the pleasure of experiencing.

159 - Building Community by Making 526 May 202200:11:28

I have a quick but immediately useful tip for you today.

If you are building community, take (or rather, make) 5.

Yes, there is a time to get shit done. But there is also a time for connection, a time to talk to someone and care about them beyond what they can do for you. When you show up for others and allow them to just be, connection and community grow. And that’s what this is all about, isn’t it? Connection.

158 - Celebrating "No"13 May 202200:15:11

“No” isn’t something we celebrate very much. But who says we can’t? Every No I’ve ever gotten has created the space needed for bigger, better, amazing Fuck-Yeses. And even when it hurts like hell, when it’s painful and hard to work through, there has always been space created on the back end to usher in new opportunities.

We’re all just trying to figure this life thing out. So what if instead of dreading No, we celebrated it? What if we loved and thanked No because it means that a much bigger Yes is right around the corner?

157 - Trust the Yoga 06 May 202200:13:09

I’ve spoken on the podcast about story-telling and intention setting in teaching yoga, but there’s something else I feel  the need to share with you: Trust the yoga. Our words are powerful, yes, but it doesn’t always have to be complex. You can let the physical process speak for itself.

When you experience something through your body, everything changes. It’s a way in to the internal experience—the emotional, spiritual, mental side of yoga. Our movement changes our experience with the world.

So yes, the physical practice may not be at the center of your teaching, but do not leave it behind. The physical practice reminds us that if we can do hard things with our bodies, maybe we can do hard things with the rest of ourselves, too.

This episode is for the dreamers. For those of you who have a lot of creative ideas, dreams about the way things can be done. This is for people who have big goals, the kind of goals that carry a lot of emotion behind them.

When you find yourself with this type of an idea, dream, or goal, stop and ask yourself, “why?” Keep asking yourself why, “Why is this important?” “What does this look like?” “What would it feel like if I did this?”

I’m not sure what you will find, but I hope that it will lead you in the direction that is most worth your attention. I hope that it will help you create structure and form in your life so that you can find the flow within.

155 - Where Storytelling and Movement Meet21 Apr 202200:20:53

How do you create dynamic, diverse movement that honors tradition? Where do we, as yoga teachers, put in the moments of deeper concentration during flow?

Our storytelling. Focus on the body while you thread together language and the words we speak. Let the movement be the vehicle with which we embody ideas—ideas like spirituality, freedom, experiment.

Because that’s where our humanness lies: in our stories. And our humanness is makes us approachable and trustworthy teachers. We reach it through our words. Storytelling can let movement can reach even farther and even deeper.

154 - Love Is A Clay Heart15 Apr 202200:11:34

We cover a lot of interesting topics for a podcast about yoga, but yoga is so much more than what we do with our bodies. So much of my own yoga practice is how I interact with others, how I open up my heart to them.

I want my heat to be a piece of clay. I want to be able to take pieces from my heart and give it to others, and to have others give me pieces of clay from their hearts. I want my heart to be so open to others that the clay is misshapen and lumpy and full of love.

That is love to me: a lumpy heart, with people at the center.

How do you feel about your voice? Do you love the tone of it, how you can hear the sound of your joy, how it makes others feel? What don’t you like about it? How could you speak that would convey to others a sense of comfort, peace, or playfulness?

I want to talk to you all about our voices, and how important our voice is as yoga teachers and how we lead others. We have the power to shift the energy in the rooms we are in. If we are playful with our voice, in turn we are encouraging others to play as well, to feel comfortable experimenting and trying new things. Voice is a big part of how we hold space in a room.

How do you express your unique voice?

152 - Teaching the Biomechanics of Yoga with Jules Mitchell31 Mar 202200:55:42

Jules Mitchell is a teacher of teachers. She leans into science, where others might turn away, and makes us all the better for it. Jules is leading the way to the conversations that we need to be having.

It’s important that we pay attention to the language we use as teachers. What do we truly understand (rather than just regurgitating) and how do we communicate that? How can we clearly express what something as simple— yet as complex—as “stretching”? How can we facilitate those conversations?

How can we celebrate the feedback we receive from our students, rather than feel discouraged by it so we can better serve them, and the practice of yoga itself? We can start with the biomechanics.
