The natural explanation for this is simply that the month of Adar occurs more frequently than any other month, since there are often two Adars (i.e., in a leap year). On a deeper level, it may be that the month of Adar was ultimately considered meritorious for Klal Yisroel because it contains the yahrtzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu (see Medrash Esther Rabbah 7:11). So perhaps there is an especial divinely ordained merit to tzaddikim’s yahrtzeits occuring in Adar more than any other month. Nu nu, perhaps. Our utmost gratitude is extended to Reb Yaakov Shlita for his gracious and selfless dedication to the cause of spreading inspiration to the Jewish people!! זייט מצליח!! By a show of hands, how many of you are fans of chazzanus? (......Insert crickets here......) That’s what I thought. However, in spite of this, it behooves us to step outside of our normal comfort zones, and very briefly (- emphasis on neither very nor briefly -) cover the life and career of The King of Cantors - The Golden Voice of Jewish Music, Yossele Rosenblatt. I think you’ll find it’s worth the read. Standing at not much more than five feet tall, Rosenblatt was still an impressive figure with his heavy, dark beard and fastidious appearance. Until the early post–World War I years, Rosenblatt pretty much dominated the world of chazzanus in America. Reviewers sometimes described him as a man with two, even three voices: a warm baritone, a ringing tenor, and a shimmering falsetto. What's more, he could navigate between them with ease. Rosenblatt, almost completely self-trained, had perfect pitch and could read the most difficult musical score at sight. He had a pure voice of extraordinary sweetness and carrying ability. The placement of his voice was fantastic. It was facetiously said that he could hit a fly in the gallery with a high B Flat. The voice itself was not large in size or in volume, but so well was it placed that it carried to the furthest part of any auditorium with utmost ease, whether in a heavenly pianissimo or in a ringing forte. His range was phenomenal. To get a little more technical for the vocalists out there, he sang into bass clef with no effort whatsoever and was able - in falsetto - to reach a sustained E above high C, a male range extending some three octaves, about a third more than is customary for an average good operatic tenor. The singer's vocal control was something that had to be heard to be believed. His ability to sing runs, trills, sustain a legato, handle coloratura passages and to color his voice all came from a technique no longer taught and which has not been known for well over three-quarters of a century. ... He was a prolific writer and speaker. He loved the alps. Blah blah blah blah blah blah…. 😴😴😴. (sorry, I fell asleep) Rabboisai, I could spend the precious space I was allotted to describe the incredible accomplishments and impact of Oberrabbiner Hirsch zl, but I don’t see much benefit in doing so (other than to impress you with my casual offhand use of German terms like Verband der orthodoxen Rabbiner Deutschlands, and Freie Vereinigung für die Interessen des Orthodoxen Judentums. Anyways, it sounds much better in the audio than it looks on paper.) (In fact, Rav Hirsch himself seems to have considered the study of history and past events as pointless and a waste of precious time; refer to Collected Writings VII, p. 440: “One must examine whether the study of history and of past events is necessary or even useful for men and nations whose present life is completely taken up with vigorous and active devotion to their duty. Only generations in the state of decline feel they must look back to the past in order to be uplifted by the example of long departed heroes.....” In other words, he would have disapproved of the phenomenally popular Yahrtzeit Yomi broadcast. Oh boy, this is awkward.) 🥴🥴🥴 Instead, Rabboisai, let’s learn an absolutely stunning and timeless piece which Rav Hirsch writes in his comments at the very end of Parshas Shemos, which really sets the stage for the world-altering events of yetzias mitzrayim. The pesukim at the end of parshas shemos record a very cryptic conversation: וַיָּ֧שׇׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־ה׳ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר ה׳ לָמָ֤ה הֲרֵעֹ֙תָה֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה שְׁלַחְתָּֽנִי: וּמֵאָ֞ז בָּ֤אתִי אֶל־פַּרְעֹה֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר בִּשְׁמֶ֔ךָ הֵרַ֖ע לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה וְהַצֵּ֥ל לֹא־הִצַּ֖לְתָּ אֶת־עַמֶּֽךָ (שמות ה:כב,כג) Moshe Rabbeinu complains to Hashem that his presence in Egypt not only didn’t improve the situation, but actually made things far worse. Hashem replies: וַיֹּ֤אמֶר ה׳ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַתָּ֣ה תִרְאֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה לְפַרְעֹ֑ה וכו׳: “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh” etc. Anyone reading this exchange should be bothered by the simple question: How did Hashem answer Moshe’s question? All Hashem said was “OK, now you’ll see what I will do to Pharaoh”. But why, takeh, did Hashem send Moshe to Pharaoh, if his appearance accomplished nothing, and even made matters worse?? Why is this statement mentioned precisely at this point? Furthermore, this statement interrupts the narrative of the story of Miriam’s “slander”: it is sandwiched right between Miriam’s complaint about Moshe, and Hashem’s response!!? Rabboisai, what’s pshat?? Zukt the Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh, moiradik!! He brings from the Sifri that Miriam and Aharon ACTUALLY APPROACHED Moshe Rabbeinu, and lodged their complaint directly to him!! (The Ohr HaChaim points out that it would have been pointless for Miriam and Aharon to have had this discussion without Moshe around; rather, Miriam & Aharon were giving Moshe words of Tochacha (rebuke), as follows: “Since we are prophets as well, why are you behaving differently?”) Now, there was a very simple response to Miriam’s complaint, of which Moshe was well aware: Moshe was on a much higher level of prophecy then Miriam and Aharon!! And that is exactly what Hashem’s response was: לא כן עבדי משה בכל ביתי נאמן הוא!! Ayyyyy, so now the question is, why didn’t Moshe explain this to Miriam? Why was it necessary for Hashem to come to his defense instead? Why couldn’t Moshe simply explain that he was on a much higher level?? Ahhhhhhh…!!! Zukt the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh…….noira shebenoira!! Do you know why Moshe could not respond? The possuk itself provides the answer: והאיש משה ענו מאד מכל האדם אשר על פני האדמה!! Because of his supreme humility, Moshe Rabbeinu could not come to express the answer to Miriam’s complaint; namely, that he was on the highest level of prophecy ever reached!! He could never utter anything that would even remotely indicate that he was any greater than anyone else!! So, says the Ohr HaChaim, the possuk’s description of Moshe’s humility is actually part of the Torah narrative!! It explains why Moshe could not respond to Miriam’s complaint!! So therefore, Hashem Himself had to intervene, and speak on Moshe‘s behalf!! AHHHHH!! RABBOISAI!! Yahrtzeit Yomi #1078!! ז סיון (Thursday) The Ger Tzedek of Vilna Count Valentin Potocki אברהם בן אברהם גר צדק (1700 - 1749) --------------------------------------------------- The inspiring story of אברהם בן אברהם, the גר צדק of Vilna, also known as Count Valentin Potocki, is told in the following audio clip, an excerpt from a shiur that was delivered by Rav Daniel Kalish Shlita, in honor of the occasion of the Ger Tzedek’s 273rd Yahrtzeit, 7 Sivan (2nd day of Shavuos). The “Ger Tzedek of Vilna”, as he came to be known, was initially a renowned Polish nobleman (szlachta) of the Potocki family. He ultimately converted to Judaism and was burned at the stake by the Roman Catholic Church because he had renounced Catholicism and had become an observant Jew. Avraham Potocki was executed in Vilna on the second day of Shavuos. (One Jew, Leiser Zhiskes, succeeded through bribery in securing some of the ashes of the martyr, which were later buried in the Vilna Jewish cemetery.) Avraham Potocki walked proudly to the execution site, singing a song that was later sung in the Volozhin yeshiva, and subsequently also sung by Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer on Motzei Yom Kippur. Rav Kalish Shlita masterfully shares the harrowing account of the last encounter between the Gaon of Vilna and the Ger Tzedek on that second day of Yom Tov, moments before the latter’s execution. The song - אנחנו בני בריתך - which Rav Kalish references in the shiur was preserved by the renowned Tzaddik, Rav Levi Yitzchok Shushan Shlita from Kiryat Sefer, who uses his musical talent to preserve old classical Yiddishe niggunim. Yahrtzeit Yomi #1059!! טו אייר Rav Avraham Eliyahu Kaplan רב אברהם אליהו ב״ר אברהם אליהו (1890 - 1924) ON HIS 100TH YAHRTZEIT!! ---------------------------------------------------- A little more than a century ago, 17-year-old Avrohom Eliyahu Kaplan composed an all-time classic poem titled Shakah Chamah, a ballad of mussar that speaks to the futility of life. For many years, the poor, lonely, and sick have found company in these meaningful lyrics. In truth, this young tzaddik faced personal challenges, beginning even before his birth: Avrohom Eliyahu was named after his father, who was known as the Rakover Iluy and who died a few months before he was born. Avrohom Eliyahu, a passionate and fiery young man, first attended the Talmud Torah of Kelm. After a short while, he moved on to the Slabodka Yeshiva, where he learned with great hasmadah, under the tutelage of the famed Alter of Slabodka, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel. Waging battle against the forces of secular Zionism and Haskalah from the time that he was a young bachur. Avrohom Eliyahu utilized his unique talents to write fearless essays and enthralling poems in the areas of Torah, Mussar, and Yiras Shamayim. A talented musician, he composed a number of mesmerizing songs, as well. One incredible story personifies his gadlus. Rav Avrohom Eliyahu was present at the Sheva Berachos of a Slabodka talmid, Rav Aharon Kotler, who married Chana Perel Meltzer, the daughter of the great Rav Isser Zalman. In honor of the celebration, Rav Aharon delivered a two-hour shtickel Torah. After he finished, Rav Avrohom Eliyahu stood up and promptly repeated the entire shtickel… in grammen form! When, years later, an incredulous talmid shared this story with Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman, rosh yeshivah of Ner Israel, he responded that it is certainly possible, as such was the brilliance of Rav Avrohom Eliyahu. Rebbetzin Ruderman, the daughter of Rav Sheftel Kramer and first cousin of Rebbetzin Kotler, overheard the conversation and shared a postscript. “Not only is it possible that it happened, but I was there! And Rav Isser Zalman’s son played the violin as Rav Avrohom Eliyahu sang the grammen.” Although Slabodka emphasized gadlus ha’adam, the greatness of man, Avrohom Eliyahu composed the words to Shakah Chamah with an altogether different mindset.
