Knicks go all-in on Brunson, Pistons excited for Ivey & bring back the Sonics | Good Word with Goodwill
Episode 225
lundi 14 octobre 2024 • Duration 01:04:30
Vincent Goodwill is joined by James Edwards III, who writes for The Athletic about the New York Knicks and who previously worked the Detroit Pistons beat. The guys talk Knicks, Pistons, NBA Hall of Fame and Seattle's basketball future.
(06:55) - NBA inducts superfans into the Hall of Fame
(16:35) - Seattle shows why it's ready to bring back the Sonics
(20:15) - Knicks building around Jalen Brunson
(48:15) - Can Cade Cunningham make the leap?
On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by James Edwards III, who writes for The Athletic about the New York Knicks and who previously worked the Detroit Pistons beat.
The guys start by talking about the Detroit Lions (who beat the Cowboys yesterday) and the Detroit Tigers (who didn't make it to the ALCS) before wondering why the NBA is inducting Jack Nicholson, Spike Lee and Billy Crystal into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Los Angeles Clippers, at the behest of owner Steve Ballmer, once again played a preseason game in Seattle and showed how much support for the NBA exists in that city. James tells stories about his time in Seattle and Vinnie talks about how adding Seattle and Las Vegas to the NBA could reshape the conferences.
With James here, the guys deep-dive into the very interesting New York Knicks. James explains what he doesn't love about the trades for Karl Anthony-Towns and Mikal Bridges, why he considers Tom Thibodeau to be one of the three best coached in the NBA and the guys discuss whether building a championship team around a player as short as Jalen Brunson might not be a great idea.
Finally, James has left the Pistons beat behind but he still has plenty of thoughts on the organization and its young players, including making the case for Cade Cunningham to be an all-star this season.

Is OKC really the West favorite? Plus, Bronny’s struggles, the small ball Pelicans & the sad Clippers | The Kevin O'Connor Show
Episode 224
vendredi 11 octobre 2024 • Duration 01:10:21
Kevin O'Connor is joined by Dan Devine to talk through some preseason NBA narratives and news, including the incredible roster of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Bronny James' place on the Lakers.
(01:05) - Can the Pelicans play Herb Jones at center?
(10:00) - Is Bronny James ready for the NBA?
(15:15) - How long can the Knicks survive with KAT at center?
(25:30) - Are the Thunder the best team in the West?
(36:45) - Can James Harden carry the Clippers with Kawhi out?
(43:15) - How will DeMar DeRozan fit in with the Kings?
(48:30) - Embiid's knee getting evaluated
(54:40) - Early impressions of Zaccharie Risacher
(60:15) - What is the Bulls' identity?
On this episode of The Kevin O'Connor Show, Kevin is joined by Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine to bounce around the league as the NBA preseason continues.
The guys start in New Orleans, where the Pelicans are saying they will play Herb Jones at center in a small ball lineup. How far can that take them in the loaded Western Conference? Also, how long will Bronny James stay in the NBA before the Lakers have to send him to the G League?
The Knicks will be without Mitchell Robinson until 2025, leaving Karl Anthony-Towns as the team's only option at starting center. Will their offense be good enough to mitigate any issues with the defense?
The Oklahoma City Thunder have more tradeable draft picks than any team and seemingly no holes on their roster. Can anyone in the Western Conference keep them out of the #1 spot?
Kawhi Leonard is, once again, facing knee issues that are keeping him from practicing with the Los Angeles Clippers. Can James Harden recreate his Houston Rockets magic and carry them to the playoffs?
The guys talk about how DeMar DeRozan fits with the Sacramento Kings before diverting to the 76ers, who might need more from Tyrese Maxey if Joel Embiid's knee isn't ready for the season.
Before closing with a conversation about the Bulls being stuck in between good and bad, Kevin and Dan give their thoughts after seeing some preseason action from Hawks rookie #1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher.

Kerr out at Team USA, Zion slims down & our favorite under-the-radar offseason moves | No Cap Room
Episode 215
mercredi 21 août 2024 • Duration 55:41
Jake Fischer and Dan Devine talk their way through the late August NBA news cycle and list off their favorite under-the-radar moves from this NBA offseason.
(05:50) - Steve Kerr not returning as Team USA basketball coach
(08:40) - Zion’s weight loss makes waves on social media
(13:10) - Kevin Durant returns to University of Texas against the Spurs
(18:40) - Joe Harris retires from basketball
(27:05) - Who’s this guy: Guerschon Yabusele
(41:15) - Our favorite under-the-radar NBA offseason moves
On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine talk about all things NBA….and maybe a little bit about Charlie XCX and Love Island.
The guys kick off the show with the news that Steve Kerr is not expected to return as the head coach of Team USA men’s basketball after leading the team to a gold medal in France. All that’s left is deciding if Spoelstra or Tyronn Lue are going to take over.
Zion Williamson looks slimmed down in pictures on social media, which serves as a good reminder of just how great he played in the 2nd half of last season.
Kevin Durant, arguably the greatest player in the history of the University of Texas, will be returning to Austin to play against the San Antonio Spurs in February. Dan explains how good Durant was in his only year in college, while Jake explains why he preferred Greg Oden.
Joe Harris retired from basketball, leading to Jake telling stories about chatting with Joe in the Nets locker room and bumping into Joe around town in Brooklyn. Dan breaks down the numbers that argue that Joe was one of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history.
Guerschon Yabusele was one of the stars of the French team at the Olympics, and he’s been rewarded with a 1-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers could really use a player like Yabusele, which means he could end up closing games for them. Dan tries to come up with comps to explain “Yabu” to people that haven’t seen him play basketball before.
We end the show with our favorite under-the-radar moves of the offseason, bouncing all over the league to do so.

2024 NBA Trade Deadline reactions | No Cap Room
Episode 124
jeudi 8 février 2024 • Duration 39:51
Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get together as the buzzer goes off to talk about everything that’s happened in the last 48 hours before the NBA trade deadline.
00:00 - Hello friends!
02:35 - Jake’s take on a quiet deadline
04:15 - Boston Celtics
07:33 - Minnesota Timberwolves
09:55 - Utah Jazz / Toronto Raptors
16:20 - 76ers / Pacers / Bucks
28:35 - Dallas Mavericks
31:25 - Suns / Nets / Hornets
33:10 - New York Knicks
On this very special episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get together as the buzzer goes off to talk about everything that’s happened in the last 48 hours before the NBA trade deadline.
It was a tame deadline, there were no superstars dealt this week, and Jake has a theory that the new CBA is to blame. It restricts what some of the contenders can do, and that showed with how many deals were made just to get teams off of that second apron.
The guys explain why Xavier Tillman (to the Celtics) and Monte Morris (to the Timberwolves) are great depth pieces, even if the fans of both of those teams maybe were hoping to get something bigger and more exciting.
The Jazz finally revealed themselves to be sellers, and not buyers, by dealing away Simone Fontecchio and Kelly Olynyk, but the Toronto Raptors confused everyone by trading for Olynyk, keeping bruce Brown, and waiving Spencer Dinwiddie after trading Dennis Schröder to get him.
The Pacers made some interesting moves, sending Buddy Hield to the 76ers and then immediately replacing him with Doug McDermott. Dan explains why that fits their roster better and Jake says their front office has quickly turned into one of the NBA’s smartest.
The 76ers seem ready to pair Buddy Field with Kyle Lowry on the buyout market, but they’ll still have to survive the next month with Mo Bamba and Paul Reed in place of the injured Joel Embiid.
Jake says the Bucks were inquiring all over the league to get some perimeter defense added to their roster, but Patrick Beverley wasn’t a name that he was expecting to hear headed to Milwaukee. He improves their perimeter defense, but does he offer anything else?
The Dallas Mavericks made two big deals, picking up center Daniel Gafford from the Wizards and power forward P.J. Washington from the Hornets. Jake would’ve preferred for them to get a big wing instead, like Andrew Wiggins, and says this doesn’t make them competitive with the top teams in the West.
The Suns picked up Royce O’Neale from the Brooklyn Nets, after Miles Bridges decided to stay with the Charlotte Hornets, and Gordon Hayward found a perfect destination in the Oklahoma City Thunder.
We finish the show with a conversation around the New York Knicks, who swung a deal to get Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks from the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks are dealing with a lot of injuries right now, so both guys will immediately help the team and will probably be in the starting lineup. However, when the Knicks get everyone healthy, this might be the most talented team they’ve had in 20 years.

Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill spends the day before the NBA trade deadline digging into stories that we haven’t talked about enough, including fatal flaws for the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.
00:00 - Introduction
01:00 - Jalen Brunson ankle injury
03:30 - Ben Simmons returns
13:25 - Scoot Henderson figuring it out
19:00 - Kawhi Leonard as playoff destroyer
30:30 - Damian Lillard on balancing life & basketball
35:40 - Fatal flaws for contenders in the East
36:05 - Boston Celtics
38:05 - Milwaukee Bucks
39:55 - Philadelphia 76ers
42:55 - New York Knicks
45:30 - LeBron James flirts with the Knicks
53:10 - NBA viewing guide
On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill talks about some of the stories that are going uncovered around the league. But first…
Jalen Brunson went down with an ankle injury last night, another in a long line of injuries to important players that the New York Knicks now have to deal with. Will this one, to their most important player, force them to make a deal at the trade deadline?
Vinnie and Producer John then try to find stories that are not being talked about enough, including the return of Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets and Scoot Henderson figuring out his offense with the Portland Trail Blazers after Shaedon Sharpe’s injury.
When the topic of “playoff destroyer we don’t see coming” comes out, Vinnie explains why Kawhi Leonard could challenge Nikola Jokic and Producer John says to watch out for Damian Lillard, who has never been on a team this talented before.
We speed run through the four contenders in the Eastern Conference, with Vinnie explaining the fatal flaw that could potentially sink each one of them. Can the Celtics win a ring on 3-point shooting? Can the Bucks win one without perimeter defense? Can the 76ers get Joel Embiid back and healthy? Can Tom Thibodeau keep from grinding his players into dust during the regular season?
Producer John tries his best to explain why he thinks LeBron James is flirting with the New York Knicks, which could spell the end of his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, before he and Vinnie reveal which games they’re most excited to watch this week.

Episode 122
mardi 6 février 2024 • Duration 01:13:38
Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by former NBA assistant coach Steve Jones Jr. to talk about which contending teams need to add another player before Thursday’s trade deadline?
00:00 - Count me in!
06:55 - What Embiid’s knee surgery means for the 76ers
14:55 - NBA trade deadline teams
23:20 - Dallas Mavericks
29:20 - Milwaukee Bucks
36:45 - Chicago Bulls
41:40 - New York Knicks
48:50 - Brooklyn Nets
50:05 - Los Angeles Clippers
53:15 - The Closing Five / Weekly recs
On this episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by former NBA assistant coach Steve Jones Jr. and they kick off the show by talking about the things around the league that bring Steve joy, such as Kawhi Leonard emoting, Rudy Gobert’s face when he tries to do too much, Giannis learning things in real-time, and the Orlando Magic’s booming coaching staff.
The guys then move on to Joel Embiid, who had a successful surgery on his knee and will be reevaluated in four weeks. Dan points out that the Philadelphia 76ers have been terrible without Embiid this season and Steve says Philadelphia doesn’t have to rush to make a move.
Dan and Steve then go team-by-team and talk through the teams that they think need one more piece, and then discuss which piece fits each team on the trade market.
Can the Mavericks find a 3-and-D big? Do the Bucks have enough to get Bruce Brown? Should the Bulls sell off the pieces they have? What kind of player should the Knicks target? Can the Nets have one less wing? Should the Clippers do something or should they protect the good vibes? The guys hit all of those questions and more before diving into The Closing Five and weekly recommendations.

NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers, Knicks, Suns & Bucks searching for help
Episode 121
lundi 5 février 2024 • Duration 55:36
Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporters Vincent Goodwill and Jake Fischer talk about what they’ve heard on the NBA trade market as the trade deadline nears.
00:00 - Welcome to the Good Word
01:50 - Embiid knee surgery / 76ers future
09:35 - LaVine foot surgery / Bulls future
18:15 - The Phoenix Suns are hot!
22:25 - Trade Deadline Rumors
22:25 - Miles Bridges
28:55 - Dejounte Murray
33:30 - Mikal Bridges / Brooklyn Nets
39:15 - Golden State Warriors
45:50 - Milwaukee Bucks
50:15 - Orlando Magic
50:50 - New York Knicks
52:10 - Dallas Mavericks
52:45 - Los Angeles Lakers
On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporters Vincent Goodwill and Jake Fischer go through the big news of the day and discuss what rumors they have heard as the NBA trade deadline nears.
Vince and Jake kick off the show by talking about Joel Embiid’s knee “procedure” and if it should prevent the Philadelphia 76ers from pushing in their chips and trying to contend for a championship this season.
The Chicago Bulls are in a very different position, having failed to trade away Zach LaVine and now seeing LaVine get surgery on his foot that will keep him out 4-6 months. Jake says don’t be surprised if they never find a way to move off of LaVine’s contract.
The Phoenix Suns finally look like the team we expected them to be. They finally have all of their big 3 (Durant, Booker, Beal) healthy and they’re playing some of the best basketball in the West. Jake points out that they still have depth issues and Vince wonders if Phoenix can do anything at the trade deadline.
We kick off trade rumors by talking about Miles Bridges, who is in a complicated situation that gives him a no-trade clause. He missed last season due to domestic violence charges filed against him, so any team trading for him has to know that it’s not as simple as adding a player to their roster.
After that, the guys unload their notebooks and share the rumors that they’ve heard with the NBA trading deadline just a couple days away.

Embiid’s knee injury, All-Star snubs, Brunson’s moment, plus LeBron & the Lakers | No Cap Room
Episode 120
vendredi 2 février 2024 • Duration 01:09:16
Yahoo Sports NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports NBA writer Dan Devine break down the news of Joel Embiid’s knee injury, look for some NBA All-Star snubs, react to a minor trade and talk about Jalen Brunson’s big moment.
00:00 - Hello friends!
01:30 - Joel Embiid tears meniscus
16:35 - NBA All-Star reserves - surprises & snubs
25:00 - REACTION: Grizzlies and Rockets trade
35:50 - LeBron James & the Lakers
46:25 - Jalen Brunson, ascendent superstar
55:45 - Tony Snell’s attempt to return to the NBA
On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports NBA writer Dan Devine talk about Joel Embiid’s latest knee injury and what it means for the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets.
The NBA announced its All-Star reserves last night, and Dan agrees with Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown about who got snubbed in the Western Conference.
The Memphis Grizzlies sent Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Victor Oladipo and three 2nd round draft picks. Jake and Dan explain why the deal makes sense for both teams, even if it came a little earlier than expected.
There are rumors of LeBron James perhaps being traded off the Los Angeles Lakers, but those rumors were shut down by his agent while we recorded the show. Jake tells us who else the Lakers have been pursuing and Dan talks about how bad they’ve been since winning the NBA In-Season Tournament.
Jalen Brunson was named an NBA All-Star for the first time yesterday and then put on a fantastic performance in front of the New York Knicks home crowd. The guys talk about his rapid ascent into superstardom and how nobody saw it coming.
Finally, Jake’s story about NBA veteran Tony Snell, who is looking to sign with a team so that he can get insurance benefits for his two young, autistic children, went viral after being published. We talk a little bit about how much the NBA community has supported Tony the last few days and the challenges that make a happy ending difficult in this circumstance.

Embiid & Haliburton try to stay eligible for year-end awards, new rule proposals & NBA viewing guide | Good Word with Goodwill
Episode 119
mercredi 31 janvier 2024 • Duration 51:05
Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill discusses the new eligibility rules for year-end awards and how much money they’re about to cost Joel Embiid & Tyrese Haliburton, and then Vince and Producer John try to fix the record-breaking scoring numbers with NBA rule proposals.
00:00 - Welcome to the Good Word!
00:44 - Mike Breen roasts Collin Sexton
04:20 - NBA stars nearing ineligibility for year-end awards
25:20 - NBA scoring is out of control
44:00 - NBA viewing guide
On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill kicks off the show by playing a clip of Mike Breen roasting Collin Sexton in a game where the New York Knicks stayed hot and beat up on the Utah Jazz.
Joel Embiid left last night’s game with what appears to be a new knee injury, to go along with the knee injury he’s already been battling through, and he’s getting close to hitting the number of missed games that would put him out of the running for year-end awards (like MVP). Tyrese Haliburton, who was injured slipping on a wet floor, would lose out on $40 million if he doesn’t play in at least 65 games this season because he would be ineligible for All-NBA.
Vincent talks about why the players got a raw deal in the latest CBA and why the owners aren’t necessarily happy about it playing out this way either.
Now, since we’re fixing problems, Vince and Producer John decided to see if they could fix the record-breaking scoring the NBA is seeing this season with a rule change. Producer John submits his idea (eliminate corner 3s) and Vinnie submits his own (bring back hand-checking) and they discuss them for a while to explain how each would help slow down offenses and give defenses a fighting chance.
Finally, Vince and Producer John tell you which three games they’ll be keeping an eye on this week and explain why you should be watching them too.

Can the Cavaliers sustain their red hot play? | Devine Intervention
Episode 118
mardi 30 janvier 2024 • Duration 01:06:52
Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Justin Rowan from The Chase Down to talk about the resurgent Cleveland Cavaliers and their place in the hierarchy of the Eastern Conference.
00:00 - Count me in!
05:35 - Cavs stay hot, beat the Clippers
11:15 - Jarrett Allen
17:00 - Isaac Okoro & Dean Wade
21:50 - Sam Merrill
26:45 - Are the Cavs better than last year?
35:00 - Darius Garland
43:25 - The Eastern Conference
46:25 - Emoni Bates
48:45 - The Closing Five
58:10 - Weekly recommendations
On this episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Justin Rowan from The Chase Down to talk about the resurgent Cleveland Cavaliers, who beat the streaking Los Angeles Clippers by 10 points last night.
Dan and Justin talk about how the team has changed since mid-December injuries took out Evan Mobley and Darius Garland, how it has lead to them being the hottest team in the NBA, and what it means for the return of Mobley (last night) and Garland (tomorrow).
Donovan Mitchell has been fantastic as the main force of the Cavs offense, but Jarrett Allen’s growth as a passer and a scorer has also been a revelation for Cleveland and probably something that will change the long term plans of their front office.
Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade were promoted into the starting lineup when Mobley and Garland went out, and those opportunities helped those players to grow into bigger parts of what the Cavs are trying to do. Sam Merrill has turned into one of the best high-volume 3-point shooters in the league out of necessity.
Do all of these changes make the Cavs better prepared for the playoffs than they were last season? And where do they rank among the elite teams at the top of the Eastern Conference?
