XVGM Radio is a VGM podcast, done in the style of a radio show. It was established in 2018 with one simple mission in mind: to bring an awesome & eclectic mix of Video Game Music to your ears! Each episode will bring you new music, new topics, and hopefully show you something you may not have heard, or might not have thought to listen to otherwise. With co-hosts Mike Levy, Justin Schneider, Ed Wilson, & NikoTengoku, you’ll hear from game music composers, fellow VGM lovers and podcasters as well as musicians within the scene. Join the guys (and their producer, a Metroid named Janine,) as they take game music podcasting to a whole new level (complete with caller requests from game characters mixed with ones from Patreon members plus….silly commercials!) XVGM Radio….Where the Bits Keep Comin’! We release shows (episodes) on a monthly basis – usually on the middle-most Wednesday.

Robots, based on the CGI family friendly flick, has a soundtrack sure to get your gears spinning. As an added bonus, the XVGM Radio guys interview the composer, Ian Stocker. Episode 104 – Shantae Tunes

Episode 104

mercredi 16 août 2023Duration 01:41:48

Wayforward’s Shantae on the Game Boy Color was the swansong release on the handheld and the beginning of a franchise in the making. Now, Shantae has not only blossomed into a 5 (soon to be 6) game series, but can be widely considered Queen of the indie game scene. One particular stand out in this game franchise is the stellar music by Jake Kaufman which will easily get you whipping your hair back and forth! Join the XVGM Radio guys (Mike and Justin) as they uncover some of the best Shantae tunes across the current 5 games, talk about the lack of Kaufman’s tunes in the newest entry as well as Kaufman’s wide range of musical genres. Move those hips to the sultry Arabian style tunes that Shantae has become famous for and believe in magic…or…well, you’ll hear for yourself. It’s SHANTAE TUNES!
Special thanks to TefiTafi for voicing Shantae in the commercial! Check out her art on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tefitafi/?igshid=ppj5cx90hiki

Episode 9 – In Memory & Celebration of Ryu Umemoto

Episode 9

mercredi 3 octobre 2018Duration 01:40:53

Though his life was short, Ryu Umemoto crafted some of the best music available on various Japanese computer system games. From Eroge visual novels to working with CAVE on their bullet hell shooters, Umemoto poured his heart and soul into creating music despite not being a classically trained musician. Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Justin uncover some of his best work full of techno, blues rock, and more ambient electronic pieces, all while taking you on a fantastic journey about his life and legacy.
Out of respect for Mr. Umemoto and his music, we have opted to not take any calls or create commercials for this episode, as it is a tribute to him.
All information about Mr. Umemoto’s life and times was paraphrased from the following interview/writeup by Audun Sorlie: https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/178187/memorial_composer_ryu_umemoto.php?print=1

Episode 8 – Dat Sunsoft Bass

Episode 10

mercredi 19 septembre 2018Duration 01:34:52

DAT SUNSOFT BASS! Sunsoft was arguably one of the best developers when it came to sound hardware on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and there’s no better example than Mr. Gimmick. Better known as Gimmick in its native land, this game (which remained exclusive to Japan and Scandinavian territories) showcased what happened when composer Masashi Kageyama took inspiration from his fellow employees’ taste in music, and injected it into this love letter to platform game fans. Despite never receiving this one in North America, the soundtrack and game have been praised as one of the most underrated on the console, with many people reproducing the game as best as they can with Sunsoft’s 5B chip. But the FME-7, the heart and soul of this soundtrack, remains exclusive to the Japanese Famicom console due to the system’s ability to read audio chips. Join Justin and Mike as they delve into the chip’s history, and share their thoughts on Gimmick’s incredible soundtrack, the game’s levels, and the little green protagonist, Umetaro!
