Market Pain as Economy Crashes with Michael Oliver21 Mar 202500:35:13

Interview recorded - 13th of March 2025

On this episode of the WTFinance podcast I had the pleasure of welcoming back Michael Oliver. Michael is the founder of Momentum Structural Analysis.

J. Michael Oliver entered the financial services industry in 1975 on the Futures side, joining E.F. Hutton’s International Commodity Division, headquartered in New York City's Battery Park.  He studied under David Johnston, head of Hutton’s Commodity Division and Chairman of the COMEX.

In the 1980s Mike began to develop his own momentum-based method of technical analysis.  He learned early on that orthodox price chart technical analysis left many unanswered questions and too often deceived those who trusted in price chart breakouts, support/resistance, and so forth.

In 1987 Mike technically anticipated and caught the Crash.  It was then that he decided to develop his structural momentum tools into a full analytic methodology.

In 1992 the Financial VP and head of Wachovia Bank's Trust  Department asked Mike to provide soft dollar research to Wachovia.  Within a year, Mike shifted from brokerage to full-time technical research.  He is also the author of The New Libertarianism: Anarcho-Capitalism.

Simon Hunt began his career in 1956 in Central Africa as a PA to the Chairman of Rhodesian Selection Trust, one of the two large copper companies in what was then Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia.

In 1961 he came back to London and joined Anglo American Corporation of South Africa as a PA to one of the Board Directors, followed by being part of a small sales and marketing team for copper. From there, he helped start up a new copper development organisation, CIDEC, financed by copper producers, which he then joined, focusing on conducting end-use studies of copper in Europe.

He then went into the City to gain financial experience and founded Brook Hunt in 1975. He was instrumental in setting up the company’s cost studies and end-use analyses. He appeared as material witness and consultant in two ITC anti-dumping cases in 1978 and 1984, winning both at the commission level.

He has spent 2-4 months every year in China since 1993 and until a few years ago would be visiting some 80 wire and cable and brass mill factories across the country every year. He now restricts these factory visits to a smaller number, all of which he has known for many years. He also spends many weeks each year traveling around Asia.

The focus of the company’s services is on the global economy, including the changing geopolitical and financial structures, China’s economy and its copper sector, and then the global copper industry as each part is interconnected.

Simon is the author of the “Frontline China Report Service,” which is marketed by the TIS Group. The Service provides regular reports on China’s economy, politics, and financial outlook.

Simon established this company in January 1996.

Bill Fleckenstein is president of Fleckenstein Capital, a money management firm based in Seattle. He writes a daily Market Rap column for his website, Fleckensteincapital.com, as well as the popular column Contrarian Chronicles for MSN Money.

Bill Fleckenstein began writing a daily column on the Internet in 1996. Initially, the Market Rap was a daily recap of market events, with an added "Yes, but..." emphasis. "I quickly learned that the contrarian viewpoint was often misrepresented and under-reported. Since then, my daily column has always called it like I see it. I've tried to write the column in a way that even the novice investor can understand. I believe it's better to teach someone how to fish, rather than just give them an occasional fish."

In summer of 2006, Mish called the top of the residential housing bubble, and the bottom in March of 2009.

In 2009, Mish’s Global Economic Trend Analysis was on the cover of online Time Magazine, Best 25 Financial Blogs.

In 2010, the New York Times cited Mish along with Barry Ritholtz and Calculated Risk in its #1 Idea of the year called: Do-It-Yourself Macroeconomics. The article was about people who called the global economy better than any formally trained economists.

Mish is a believer in free markets and small government. He writes from a Libertarian and Austrian economist point of view.

Discussion posts, typically multiple times a day, include interest rates, central bank policy, gold and precious metals, jobs, global politics, and economic reports from the BLS, BEA, and Commerce Department. On the first Friday of every month, Mish goes over the monthly job statistics in much greater detail than anything in mainstream media. The same applies to the monthly CPI, PPI, and housing reports from the BLS and commerce department.

After receiving his bachelor's degree from Duke University and studying Mandarin at Nanjing University, Louis joined the French Army where he served as a second lieutenant in a mountain infantry battalion. After a couple of years, Louis left the army and joined Paribas where he worked as a financial analyst—first in Paris, then in Hong Kong.

Louis left Paribas in 1998 to launch Gavekal with his father Charles and Anatole Kaletsky. The idea at the time was that Asia was set to become an ever more important factor in global growth, and that consequently Gavekal needed to offer its clients more information, and more ideas, relating to Asia.

Louis has written seven books, the latest being Avoiding the Punch: Investing in Uncertain Times which reviews how to build a portfolio at a time of rising geostrategic strife, and when very low interest rates and stretched valuations on most assets announce constrained returns on most assets over the next decade.

Louis speaks English and French. He spent many hours studying Mandarin and Spanish, which he once spoke decently. He is married with two sons and two daughters.

Jaspreet “ @MinorityMindset ” Singh is a serial entrepreneur and licensed attorney on a mission to spread financial education. His YouTube Channel has over one million subscribers.

Although he didn’t receive any formal financial education – he’s on a mission to make financial education fun and accessible.

Jaspreet is the Chief Executive Money Nerd at the Minority Mindset Companies and the host of the Minority Mindset YouTube Channel.

Jaspreet is self-taught. His parents are immigrants from the state of Punjab, India. Like many of his second generation Indians, Jaspreet grew up thinking that he needed to become a doctor. But he found a new path. He started his first business – an event planning company – when he was in college.

However, Jaspreet didn’t see a future with that company. After graduating college, Jaspreet pursued law school where he continued his entrepreneurial and financial ventures.

While in college, he started investing in real estate. But he quickly realized that if he wanted to continue investing in real estate, he’d need access to more capital. So, Jaspreet jumped back into entrepreneurship.

After a couple years of research, Jaspreet invented a water-resistant athletic sock.

During the launch of his sock company, he was scammed by a marketing company which cost him thousands of dollars. This scam pushed him to start an educational social media page, which he called Minority Mindset. The Minority Mindset implies thinking differently than the majority of people. It’s not a racial minority.

He started the Minority Mindset YouTube Channel as a hobby to teach others how to not make the same mistakes he made.

Around the time when his YouTube Channel hit 100,000 subscribers – his sock patent was denied. At this point, he was forced to make a decision…

Continue with the sock company, or pursue “Minority Mindset”?

The sock company was profitable while Minority Mindset was not. He decided to follow his passion and pursued Minority Mindset full time after graduating law school.

Now the Minority Mindset brand has grown into a number of companies including Briefs Media – a media company and Market Insiders – an investing education app. His brand has helped countless people get out of debt, start investing, and create a plan towards building wealth.
