The news from a few days ago12 Feb 202400:39:36
Hoover: The worst sales promotion, ever22 Sep 202200:36:40

27 years ago, Hoover offered two free flights with any £100 purchase. Today, it’s possibly the worst sales promotion of all time.

In 1992, the UK branch of the vacuum manufacturer, Hoover, offered a sweet promotion: If a customer bought any product worth £100, he’d get two free round-trip flights to the United States!

For the 84-year-old electronics brand, it was meant to be an eye-catching way to boost dwindling sales, escape the gloom of a recession, and shrug off increased competition.

Instead, it led to the destruction of the company — a precipitous downfall that saw multimillion-dollar losses and customer revolts.

The History of Medicine08 Sep 202200:48:08

This is not a full scale history of medicine - more a look at some of the wild medical practices and old-timey treatments performed by our “doctor” forefathers.

How about: cocaine for hay fever, treating malaria with a magic word, using mercury on syphilis, using vinegar soaked rags to stop heart palpitations, curing a hangover with shit and owl eggs mixed together, or sticking smoke up your arse as a remedy for cholera.

Charlie Chaplin08 Aug 202200:41:22

Charlie Chaplin (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. KBE) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film.

Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, starred in, and composed the music for most of his films. He was a perfectionist, and his financial independence enabled him to spend years on the development and production of a picture. His films are characterised by slapstick combined with pathos, typified in the Tramp's struggles against adversity. Many contain social and political themes, as well as autobiographical elements. He received an Honorary Academy Award for "the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century" in 1972, as part of a renewed appreciation for his work.

Parasite: A Masterpiece Of Dark Humor And Social Commentary18 Jul 202201:22:50

In “Parasite,” South Korean director Bong Joon-ho presents a darkly humorous tale of two families – one wealthy and one struggling to make ends meet. The Kim family, our protagonists, are an example of the latter, living in a cramped basement apartment and hustling to make a living.

In stark contrast, the Parks are the epitome of wealth and privilege. Living in a luxurious mansion, they are entirely unaware of the struggles of those less fortunate. As the film progresses, the lives of the two families become intertwined in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Throughout “Parasite,” Bong Joon-ho expertly explores the complex dynamics of class struggles and the vast divide between the rich and poor. The film is a biting critique of a society that values wealth above all else, and a commentary on the lengths that people will go to in order to secure a better life for themselves and their families.

From start to finish, “Parasite” is a rollercoaster of emotions – a deft blend of comedy, tragedy, and suspense. Bong Joon-ho expertly balances these elements, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat one minute and doubled over with laughter the next.

In conclusion, “Parasite” is a masterpiece of dark humor and social commentary. With its talented cast, sharp writing, and insightful exploration of class struggles, it’s a film that is sure to leave a lasting impression long after the credits roll.

The Russian Revolution took place in 1917, during the final phase of World War I. It removed Russia from the war and brought about the transformation of the Russian Empire into the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), replacing Russia’s traditional monarchy with the world’s first Communist state. The revolution happened in stages through two separate coups, one in February and one in October. The new government, led by Vladimir Lenin, would solidify its power only after three years of civil war, which ended in 1920.

True Crime: Dennis Rader - The BTK Killer14 Apr 202200:49:18

If you are listening on Spotify, please leave a rating x

Our True Crime series continues and features Dennis Rader - The BTK Killer.

Jack and Colin will answer the question - what is the best true crime podcast? - with their sideways look at some of the world’s most notorious serial killers and deranged maniacs.

Dennis Lynn Rader (born March 9, 1945) is an American serial killer known as BTK (an abbreviation he gave himself, for "bind, torture, kill"), the BTK Strangler or the BTK Killer. Between 1974 and 1991, Rader killed ten people in Wichita and Park City, Kansas, and sent taunting letters to police and newspapers describing the details of his crimes. After a decade-long hiatus, Rader resumed sending letters in 2004, leading to his 2005 arrest and subsequent guilty plea. He is serving ten consecutive life sentences at El Dorado Correctional Facility in Prospect Township, Butler County, Kansas.

True Crime: H. H. Holmes - aka Dr. Henry Howard Holmes17 Jan 202200:47:53

Our True Crime series continues and this episode features H. H. Holmes - aka Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, born Herman Webster Mudgett.

Herman Webster Mudgett, better known as Dr. Henry Howard Holmes or H. H. Holmes, was an American serial killer active from December 1891 to November 1894. Despite his confession of 27 murders while awaiting execution, Holmes was convicted and sentenced to death for only one murder, that of accomplice and business partner Benjamin Pitezel.

Victims were killed in a mixed-use building which he owned in Chicago, located about three miles west of the 1893 World's Fair: Columbian Exposition, supposedly called the World's Fair Hotel, informally called "The Murder Castle") though evidence suggests the hotel portion was never truly open for business...

History: Military Deception29 Nov 202100:50:35

Full show notes - Military Deception Throughout the Ages

Military Deception (MD) has been used for centuries as a tool to defeat the enemy. 5th century Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu wrote in his now world-famous book The Art of War about the importance of deception and espionage to the war effort, and as a result of this military tacticians throughout the millennia have placed a heavy focus on deception as a key wartime tactic.

Despite this, there has been a somewhat understandable lack of development in the theory and study of MD, as demonstrated by the fact that NATO have not yet even developed a universal code of MD. Even within various militaries there is a lack of direct understanding about deception and how they may face or use it.
