The Ups & Downs of Motherhood: It’s OK to Not Enjoy Every Moment05 Dec 202300:26:56

"Enjoy every moment!" We've all heard it before. And yet let's be real, not every moment of motherhood (or life for that matter) is enjoyable. And when we are led to believe that not enjoying it all means we are doing something wrong, the impact can be detrimental.

So this week, I am counteracting the narrative that we should enjoy every moment, and instead letting you know it's OK (and totally normal) to experience complex human feelings. My goal, is to help you feel more self-compassionate through it all.

Confession: I Never Wanted to be a Stay-At-Home Mom (and Still Don't)17 Oct 202300:24:54

This week I am getting into labels - "working mom," "stay-at-home mom," everything in between - not because these labels are inherently bad, but because we can inadvertedly make them mean something about our identity and self-worth. In fact, that is exactly what happened to me when I left my teaching job to run my business from home. There are all these narratives out there about what it means to be a working mom or stay-at-home mom, and with that it can be complicated to navigate what you actually want in life and motherhood.

Fear is a normal (and important) part of the human experience - but it can also hold us back from doing the things that we truly desire. This week I am joined by  Life and Empowerment Coach Lyndsay Hume for a conversation on how we can become our future self, without letting fear and excuses keep us stuck.

Should We Stop Talking About How Hard Motherhood Is?15 Aug 202300:28:18

There's a trend I've been seeing in the online space among mom influencers about how we should stop talking about how hard motherhood is because it makes it feel harder. As someone who has studied the sociological context of motherhood and built a platform based in part on conversations about the challenges of motherhood, I am responding with my own thoughts.

I'm sharing why we actually should continue to talk about how hard motherhood and parenting can be, as well as some of my own experiences of how openness about the challenges can be freeing. Plus, I'm giving a little behind the scenes about how bedtime & sleep is currently going at my house (and I'll give you a hint: it's not great).

What Is Matrescence? Why Having Language Matters with Chelsea Robinson01 Aug 202300:47:57

The transition into motherhood often feels disorienting and destabilizing - and when we don't have the language to adequately communicate our experiences, it can feel isolating and like there is something wrong. So in this episode, we are putting a name to the experience: Matrescence. I am joined by motherhood therapist & matrescence coach Chelsea Robinson, LCSW, for a conversation on the experience of becoming a mother, the continual transformation that comes with that role, and how an understanding of matresence can expand our views of motherhood for all.

In this episode, Chelsea and I talk about:

  • What matrescence is, as both the transition into motherhood and the entire motherhood experience
  • Why having adequate language to describe our experiences makes a difference
  • The societal, cultural, & generational factors that impact moms
  • How far we've come in increasing support for moms, and how far we still have to go
  • The importance of community & connection in motherhood
  • How spending time alone can help us embrace our motherhood experiences

A little about our guest:
Chelsea Robinson, LCSW, is a motherhood therapist, matrescence coach, village builder and founder of Mama’s Modern Village. With over 10 years of experience in the field of mental health, she supports women on their motherhood journey at the intersection of modern motherhood culture and a woman’s matrescence, her transition from woman to mother. Chelsea is not a parenting expert, rather an expert on the mama, whose work centers on bringing the mother back into focus. Chelsea has created "Becoming Mama", a 12-week program designed to support women all along their motherhood journey in decreasing their burnout, stress and overwhelm, while increasing their confidence, joy and understanding of their matrescence.
