Snack 3: Build a Stronger Team with This Improv Move03 Mar 202500:07:44

It’s time for your Workday Playdate snack—just a quick bite of leadership wisdom before we go deeper on Wednesday. Today, we’re talking about empathy—the leadership skill that turns good teams into great ones.

Want a quick and easy way to help your team feel heard? Try this improv-inspired exercise:

“Last Word, First Word”

  1. One person starts with a simple sentence. Example: “Our team is growing fast.”
  2. The next person must start their sentence with the last word of the previous sentence. Example: “Fast changes require clear communication.”
  3. Keep going around, building off each other’s words.
  4. Notice how this forces people to really listen and build on what’s being said—just like in a strong, empathetic workplace.

Why does this work? Because it shifts conversations from waiting to speak to actively responding. And that’s where trust starts.

Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? What’s one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it down—and take action.

If you’re interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The Empathy Cheat Sheet here. Break out this 3-part list of helpful phrases before heading into any conversation or meeting, responding to an email, or hosting a one-on-one call.

273: Hey, Overthinkers! Let’s Simplify Your Intentions16 Jan 202500:35:12

Are you stuck in the endless loop of overthinking?

Maybe you’ve rewritten the same email five times, hesitated to act on a great idea, or turned your to-do list into a novel.

Overthinking doesn’t just waste time—it keeps you from living fully. In today’s episode, Erin tackles how to break free from the analysis paralysis and take intentional, meaningful steps forward.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. The Problem with Overthinking

Overthinking might feel like preparation, but it often paralyzes us instead. As Erin discusses in the episode, overthinking shows up as rehearsing perfect outcomes, hesitating to act, and losing momentum.

It’s like being in an improv scene where second-guessing kills the energy. For leaders, this habit can hold back both personal progress and team performance. Life, like improv, doesn’t follow a script, and trying to control every detail often leads to frustration rather than fulfillment.

2. Start with Your “Why”

The first step in simplifying your intentions is finding your purpose. Erin compares this to an improv game where you identify the core idea driving the scene.

By clarifying what truly matters to you, you can focus on meaningful goals. Try this exercise: If your life were a play, what would the main character (you!) want to accomplish in this act? By anchoring your goals in purpose, you’ll cut through distractions and stay aligned with what’s most important.

3. Focus on 1–3 Key Areas

One major takeaway from the episode is the power of focus. Just as too many ideas on stage can ruin an improv scene, too many goals can dilute your energy.

Erin recommends choosing 1–3 focus areas that align with your “why.” For example, you might prioritize improving relationships, advancing professionally, or nurturing self-care. By narrowing your focus, you’ll achieve clarity and make meaningful progress without feeling overwhelmed.

4. Break Goals into Micro-Actions

Big goals can feel daunting, but breaking them into micro-actions makes them manageable. In improv, scenes are built line by line—and your goals should work the same way.

If your intention is better self-care, start with small, actionable steps, like setting aside five minutes daily to stretch or meditate. Progress builds momentum, and every small win moves you closer to your larger vision.

5. Progress Over Perfection

Finally, embrace the improv mindset of progress over perfection. No one delivers the perfect scene every time, and no one achieves their goals without a few missteps.

Celebrate small wins along the way and view challenges as opportunities to pivot. In the episode, Erin shares an exercise to overcome mental blocks: shout out the first word that comes to mind to break the cycle of overthinking. It’s a simple, effective way to get unstuck and take action.

Final Thoughts

Overthinking keeps us in our heads, but action moves us forward. Simplifying your intentions is about doing what matters most. Today, take one intention you’ve been overthinking and break it into the simplest, smallest action you can take. Whether it’s sending an email, jotting down your goals, or taking a five-minute breather, start now. Remember, the magic happens when you leap.

What’s your first step? Share your intention with Erin by tagging her on Instagram (@itserindiehl) or sending an email (info@learntoimproveit.com). Let’s keep each other accountable as we make 2025 the year of progress over perfection. If you’re interested in a bank of free resources to set intentions and work towards your goals on a daily basis this year – you can check out our freebies here.

174: How to Be an Intrapreneur and Reclaim Ownership of Your Career with Anna Oakes09 May 202300:20:48

If you’re not taking all of the candy in the candy jar, you’re exactly where you need to be.

Anna Oaks is a change agent focused on restoring humanity into both our work and workplaces. Raised by hippies, she’s always had a natural inclination to leave the world better than we found it. She brought this proclivity from her childhood into over two decades of work in small, mid-sized, and large companies focusing on strategy, growth, and culture.

She toggles between being both an intrapreneur, or working directly in companies, and also an entrepreneur, or working on solutions to make work better through her own company, Oaks Co.

In this episode, Erin and Anna discuss what it means to be an intrapreneur vs. an entrepreneur (and why you’re probably already doing both), why intention overrules your opinion, and how doing what is asked of you and nothing more is saving our workplace culture.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about your current role.  Maybe you're an intrapreneur listening to this show and you don't recognize that you are an intrapreneur. Or maybe you're an entrepreneur listening to this show and you lead a team of people and that team might include some intrapreneurs. How can you get more curious? Is this the season of your life that you are going to do that? Maybe it's not your season and you want to leave the candy on the table. But if this season feels like you can dream and you want to get curious, I want you to jot down a list of three ways that you're going to get more curious at your current role.

272: How Can You Eliminate Imposter Syndrome to Optimize Your Performance with Victoria Jenn Rodriguez08 Jan 202500:42:39

Imposter syndrome—two words that can stop even the most ambitious professionals in their tracks.

But what if we told you that it’s not a roadblock, but a signal of growth?

In today's episode, Erin sits down with the inspiring Victoria Jenn Rodriguez to flip the script on imposter syndrome. Victoria reveals why feeling like an imposter can actually be a good thing, and shares powerful strategies for overcoming self-doubt while leveling up in life and work.

Here are five standout lessons from Erin's convo with Victoria:

1. Imposter Syndrome is a Sign of Growth

Victoria Jenn reframes imposter syndrome as a cause for celebration rather than concern. Experiencing self-doubt often means you are stepping into spaces that challenge you, stretch you, and encourage growth.

She highlights how even high-profile figures like Michelle Obama and Jennifer Lopez have publicly acknowledged grappling with imposter syndrome, proving that these feelings are universal.

2. Recognizing the Signs

Victoria Jenn outlines key indicators of imposter syndrome, such as feeling like a fraud despite your accomplishments, attributing success to luck, or dismissing significant achievements as "no big deal."

These symptoms can manifest as constant anxiety about failing or feeling undeserving of your role. She encourages listeners to acknowledge these feelings as valid, but to challenge them by reflecting on the hard work and dedication that led to their success.

3. External Factors Amplify Imposter Syndrome

Erin and Victoria’s discussion touches on how societal pressures and unique challenges—especially for women and women of color—can intensify imposter syndrome.

Victoria Jenn emphasizes the added complexity of biological factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, postpartum, or perimenopause, which can exacerbate self-doubt. She reassures listeners that these feelings are not only normal, but also a testament to their ambition and resilience.

4. The Power of the "Don’t Panic Framework"

To combat imposter syndrome, Victoria Jenn introduces her Don’t Panic Framework, starting with self-awareness.

She encourages identifying situations that trigger self-doubt and addressing them head-on. A standout strategy is building a “Badassery Committee”—a trusted group of 5-7 supporters who remind you of your worth and accomplishments. She also emphasizes the importance of mirror self-talk to internalize confidence and view yourself as the person you aspire to become.

5. Consistency Breeds Confidence

163: A Case Study in Evolution with Pioneer & Keynote Speaker Gaby Natale - Part 212 Apr 202300:21:42

Inner voice > outer noise

This is the message 3-time EMMY award winning journalist, bestselling author, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur Gaby Natale shares on today’s episode.

The screen you're reading this on, the clothing you wear, the experiences that have shaped your life - these were all ideas in someone’s head before they became real.

They trusted these ideas enough to make them real, will you trust yours?

In part two of Erin's conversation with Gaby, you’ll hear the mindset shifts that ultimately led to Gaby’s success, going with what comes naturally in an age of over-the-top wellness, and how to be an instrument for what the people around you need at that point in their journey.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Get still this week and listen to what your inner voice is saying. Maybe it's telling you to go back to those things that brought you joy as a child. Maybe it's telling you to listen, refresh, change jobs. Maybe it's telling you to enhance where you're currently at and the role that you have. Get still this week and listen to your inner voice. Stop listening to the outside noise.

271: Spark Joy, Set Goals: Intentional Leadership Tips that Work01 Jan 202500:37:39

What if the key to thriving under pressure was simpler than you thought?

In today’s episode, Erin tackles one of the toughest challenges leaders face: staying positive and intentional during high-pressure situations. Whether you're leading a team through tight deadlines or navigating unpredictable circumstances, this episode offers actionable insights to help you lead with clarity and joy.

Below are five key takeaways from the episode, giving you the tools to transform stress into an opportunity for intentional leadership:

1. Set the Stage: Define Your Leadership "Why"

Intentional leadership starts with purpose. Leaders who act with clarity instead of reacting impulsively create stronger, more engaged teams. Research by Gallup shows that 70% of employee engagement is directly tied to the quality of their manager. Setting a clear "why" can transform mundane tasks into meaningful contributions. During the launch of I See You!, the improve it! team dedicated time to align their purpose with their goals. This exercise not only reinforced the mission, but energized their efforts as well--proving that purpose-driven leadership fosters both morale and productivity.

Actionable Tip: Reflect on your "why" as a leader and how it aligns with your team’s objectives. Share this vision during team meetings to build a sense of collective purpose.

2. Spark Joy: Lead with Empathy and Creativity

Leadership isn’t just about getting things done—it’s about creating an environment where your team feels joyful and valued. Studies from Harvard Business Review reveal that joyful employees are 20% more productive. Simple actions, like celebrating small wins or infusing creativity into routines, can make a big difference. Erin’s team’s decision to hold a goal-setting session by the Charleston waterfront exemplifies how changing the environment and mindset can spark inspiration. A surprise visit from a ladybug became a symbolic moment, reminding them that joy leads to serendipitous success.

Actionable Tip: Incorporate small rituals of joy, such as sharing weekend highlights on Slack or starting meetings with a funny meme, to boost team morale.

3. Master Goal-Setting: Move from Vision to Action

Effective leaders bridge the gap between vision and execution through structured goal-setting. The SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) is a proven method, with a 42% higher success rate, according to a study by Dominican University of California. During the I See You! book launch, Erin and her team set an ambitious goal of reaching 10,000 readers—a target that was both measurable and aligned with our purpose. Naming their ladybug "OprahGabby2024" and creating a hashtag around it infused fun and focus into this vision.

Actionable Tip: Start your week by setting one SMART goal for yourself and your team. Break it down into smaller tasks and track progress.

4. Overcome Leadership Challenges with Intention

Leadership is not without hurdles, from burnout to team conflicts. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in staying intentional. Tools like mindfulness practices and feedback loops can keep leaders grounded and connected to their teams. At improve it!, Erin and her team regularly set monthly intentions and check in with team members to understand their needs. This consistent effort fosters psychological safety and reduces resistance to change.

Actionable Tip: Schedule a 10-minute reflection session at the end of each day to assess wins and areas for improvement. This practice helps maintain focus and adaptability.

5. Commit to a 30-Day Leadership Challenge

Small, intentional actions compound over time, creating significant impact. In the episode, Erin encourages listeners to commit to a 30-day leadership challenge—such as starting meetings with gratitude or setting weekly SMART goals—to build positive habits. These practices improve team morale, engagement, and productivity, one step at a time.

Actionable Tip: Choose one intentional leadership practice to implement over the next 30 days. Track your progress and share your experience with your team to inspire collective growth.

Final Thoughts

Intentional leadership is a journey, not a destination. By focusing on purpose, sparking joy, setting clear goals, and addressing challenges with intention, you can lead your team to thrive under pressure. As we learned from our community question, maintaining positivity starts with the small, deliberate choices we make every day.

In this episode, Erin is joined by Gaby Natale, 3-time EMMY award winning journalist, bestselling author, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur. Gaby is on a mission to awaken the pioneer spirit in each of us, no matter your gender, race, religion, or upbringing.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone lost in a world of accelerated change and looking to find clarity through discomfort.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think back to your younger self. Is there something in your younger life that pops up as a core memory and brings you joy? For Gabby, it was standing on stage at her kindergarten graduation, really not wanting to leave that stage. That moment for you might be working on a project with your hands. It might be helping in the garden with your grandmother. It might be playing Double Dare as the television host in your living room. Think back to younger you. We'll bring this forward in the next two episodes as we continue with our theme of evolution.

161: Ready to Evolve in Your Career and Your Life? TRY THIS06 Apr 202300:15:44

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes that it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” -Maya Angelou

Maybe it was hitting a PR in the gym (because we see you working on your fitness). Maybe it was noticing something you taught your child in action, without you needing to say anything.

Whatever your win was, did you celebrate just the win or did you celebrate everything you did to achieve the win? For most of us, it’s the former. We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but don’t admit the changes it’s gone through to achieve that beauty.

In this episode, Erin gives you a simple activity to set goals, achieve them, and celebrate everything you put into achieve them throughout your entire process. Not to mention, this episode will change how you think about goal-setting entirely. Press play for the twist!

The way you spend your days is the way you spend your life.

It sounds overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. When you think about the way you spend your day - are you a “yes” for the actions that take up a small amount of time? A large amount of time?

Do you incorporate something into your routine that someone else wouldn’t understand but it makes sense for you?

Do you incorporate something into your routine that doesn’t make sense for you but does for someone else?

In this episode, Erin gives you a simple improv-based activity to determine what actions you’re saying “yes” to that serve you, and also the flipside: what you’re saying “yes” to that really isn’t for you.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Send Erin a message telling her what you’re a “yes” for on LinkedIn or Instagram linked below. When you put what you’re a “yes” for out in the world, you're holding yourself accountable. If you’d prefer to spread your yeses in another way, tell a friend or post about it. Create a social post and share it with your network. When you start to put these yeses into the world, you'll be amazed at what comes into your life and what you can creatively bring to fruition.

159: The Missing Piece of Your Business Culture: Improv Comedy with Adi Clerman30 Mar 202300:24:29

When you tell your team they have a professional development day next Friday, what would come to their minds?

If it’s “sitting through another training,” you might want to reconsider your approach.

Think about it like this: Everyone you work with is smart. Everyone knows strategies to be more productive, to stay focused, and to do the things a hypothetical Employee of the Month would do.

As a result, your team doesn’t need to “sit through another training.” Your team needs something different. Something that’s a challenge, not a bore. Something that’ll make them laugh, allow them to be themselves, and not explicitly be about work.

Erin and Adi conclude their three-part series with a conversation about why Adi decided to make improv comedy workshops a focal point of the professional development calendar for 480 professionals she leads.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about your biggest failure moment or when one of your worst fears came true. Think about how you got through it, because you're still here listening to this show. Allow this to serve as a reminder to you to keep getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Let it infiltrate into your culture. It will make a difference in how you show up, not only for the people around you, but more importantly for the most important person in your life – you.

158: Five Reasons Why Humor is Key to Success at Work with Adi Clerman29 Mar 202300:18:03

Humor styles are just like personality styles - everyone has something a little different.

Instead of shutting out humor entirely in your professional life, how can you use it to show up more authentically?

In this episode, Adi describes her newest hobby: stand-up comedy. As a corporate professional by day, Adi explains why she included stand-up into her jam-packed schedule, how it’s impacted her work life, and what it’s taught her over the past 10 months.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Jot down your own five reasons about why humor is important to you. Not just how humor can help you show up to be a better person at work, but why humor is key to success. Why is it key to your success? Keep these five reasons somewhere that you can view them. It could be on the note section of your phone or on a Post-It next to your computer. Try to use it as a sign to bring more laughter, levity, and positivity into your workday, to add a little bit more fun to that spreadsheet, or to add a little bit more smiling to that Zoom meeting.

157: Outside of the Box Professional Development for Emerging Leaders with Adi Clerman28 Mar 202300:21:50

Are you a leader or emerging leader wondering how to solve the professional development dilemma?

On one hand, you can choose professional development that’s rigid, vigorous, but unenjoyable. Think lots of Powerpoint slides, note taking, and a quiz at the end.

On the other hand, you can choose a professional development opportunity that your team will actually like. Think experiential learning, no right or wrong answers, and a slight bit of discomfort to propel you forward.

In today’s episode Erin and Adi Clerman discuss what it means to choose professional development opportunities that help each team member feel included in a unique way.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think of one outside-the-box thing you have done recently. What's one thing that you have done in your day-to-day that's outside the norm? Write that thing down. Then challenge yourself to do one thing that is outside of the box this week.

156: Starting a Gratitude Practice with Heather Vickery23 Mar 202300:16:18

If today all you have to give is 15% and you give 15%, then that’s 100%. Math isn’t our strong suit but we’re pretty sure that tracks.

Be honest with yourself on the days you can give 15% and the days you can give 100%. Only you know, and only you can show up based off of what you can give. No one else can make those calls besides you.

The point here is this: You can’t do incredible, badass things unless you can build from what’s already working and what’s already good.

What’s already working? The percentage you can give today. The habits you’ve implemented to fill up your cup before you try to fill anyone else’s. Your unique “IT” factor only you can give.

What’s already good? The pockets of joy tucked into everyday that you notice and celebrate. The way that your best friend would describe you to a stranger. Everything you’ve achieved but never really let sink in.

Listen as Erin and Heather conclude this three-part series on bravery, exploring what it means to build from what’s already working and what’s already good.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think of 10 things right now that you are grateful for. 10 things that you can see, touch, feel, hear, see, I said see, but you know what I'm talking about. Find 10 things, say them out loud right now. Feel the energy in your body shift and commit to a practice of gratitude in your life.

155: How Self-Love Will Make You a Better Leader with Heather Vickery22 Mar 202300:17:02

What happens when you don’t treat yourself with kindness before trying to be kind to others?

You’re hurt. You stay small. You allow yourself to be hurt more often by others because you don’t value yourself. You lack a sense of worthiness.

You are not as kind as you’d like to be or maybe as you think you are towards other people around you, because when you cannot be kind to yourself, you don’t have the foundation to be kind to other people.

You burnout. You don’t have the energy resources to give to other people you may really, deeply want to because your cup is empty.

Kindness is an inside job that eventually overflows into how you show up for others. Listen as Erin and Heather give you the how-to on living a kinder, braver life starting with the small things (that really aren’t small).

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about the percentage that you are going to give to yourself today. How are you going to show up for you in this moment? Is it 10%? Is it 50%? Are you going to give one hundred percent today? Make that decision. And then I want you to actually give that percentage to yourself at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, reflect: did I give myself what I promised myself? And if you did, find some way to celebrate. Maybe it's a bubble bath. Maybe it's one of those masks that you put on your face that make you look like Jason from those Halloween movies that are actually doing great things for your pores. I don't know. Do something that makes you feel good because you deserve it.

154: Making the Brave Leap with Heather Vickery21 Mar 202300:23:43

Today we’re busting bravery myths, starting with the idea that we can like and trust ourselves when we get “there.” “There” meaning that dream job, selling X number of copies of your book, or moving into your dream home.

The truth is, the future isn’t real. We can’t touch it, hear it, see it, smell it, or feel it. We can access it only through our imagination, which is a dangerous water to tread. And because the future isn’t real, telling ourselves that we’re going to like and trust ourselves in the future is, to the truest meaning of the word, pointless.

On the contrary, when we practice liking and trusting ourselves right now, we start showing up in new ways. We take our “IT” factors to the highest power. We form lifetime connections. We take intentional creative risks. We propel ourselves to our next best thing.

Your future self doesn’t need your bravery, your right now self does. Listen to Erin and guest Heather Vickery discuss what it means to make the brave leap in your everyday life.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about your own story with bravery. What is a time that you have shown up for yourself? You felt strong, you felt empowered, and you did something that you did not think that you could do. You got comfortable with the uncomfortable. Think about that story today. Then give yourself a big high five or a hug because my friends, bravery is boss. Bravery is leading the way for our teams, our families, our friends. Bravery is showing up for you.

Minisode 23: The FailFluencer Files with Nicole Entzeroth16 Mar 202300:16:05

Absolutely post your vacay pics, your girls night outings, and your latest promotions. You never needed anyone’s permission to share your wins.

At the same time, think about this: when you view someone else’s wins on social media, you may share in their joy, send them congratulations or well wishes. You may be jealous. You may compare yourself. And the most important question to ask yourself…

Did you learn anything from seeing their win?

Sometimes a little bit. Maybe you now understand what it takes to earn that type of promotion or where you want to schedule your next flight.

Now ask yourself this: when you read about someone’s demotion, embarrassing moment, or W.T.F. (Worst Terrifying Fail), what did you learn?

Most of the time it’s A TON. You learned perhaps what not to do, what actions to take instead, or simply how to move on from that occurrence.

The point? Folks learn more when we share our fails than when we share our wins. Hence, why we started The Failfluencer Files on The improve it! Podcast. Listen as Erin and improve it!’s very own Client Experience Associate Nicole Entzeroth discuss the failure of a mystery call-in guest.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think of your own failure story. What is a story that has happened to you and given you a lesson in life that you want to share? Use the link here to send us a voice message with your Failfluencer File story. We'll use this audio clip in a future episode to talk through it through the lens of failure in order to teach all of the improve it! Peeps a lesson that wouldn’t exist without you.

153: The Full Proof Business Improv Activity that Will Help You Be More Present16 Mar 202300:16:39

Often times when we think about presence or being present, we think it’s a matter of determination.

Ehhh (wrong noise beep). Presence exists more like a battery percentage. We can use it as much as we like, but when we’re on low, we’re on low. When we’re out, we’re out. It’s not a matter of determination, but availability.

If we’ve used up our presence for the day, we’ll have to recharge before we can expect ourselves to give more.

In this episode, Erin gives you an improv activity that will help train your mind to be present throughout the day. It’s kind of like taking a cold shower to train your mind to tolerate stress. Let the gift-giving begin!

151: How to Become a Recovering Perfectionist Turned Failfluencer with Jess Joswick09 Mar 202300:19:20

Imagine waking up and making your to-do list as usual, but then there’s a twist: you tell yourself that each item on your to-do list only needs to be done in an average way.

The project doesn’t have to be flawlessly worded. The kitchen only needs to be clean enough to make dinner tonight. The workout can be 20 minutes instead of an hour.

If you start C+ing your life, as Jess Joswick and her clients say, you start working against a perfectionist mindset. What would happen if you did? How does this change your relationship with productivity? With failure?

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: For one whole day, track what brings you energy and what doesn't. Make a simple list with zero judgement and full honesty. How can you include more tasks that energize you in your day-to-day? Make an action plan that doesn’t have to be anything extreme. It could be as simple as going outside first thing in the morning or calling a friend during your lunch break.

150: How to Identify Perfectionism in Yourself and Your Team with Jess Joswick08 Mar 202300:19:13

Perfectionism is a word and an idea that we throw around frequently, but has anyone taught us how to actually identify its signs within ourselves? Within our team?

If we can’t identify perfectionism within ourselves and in our team, we can’t begin to dismantle it and develop more sustainable personal and professional habits. Awareness is the first step to becoming, as we like to say, a Recovering Perfectionist.

This is part two of a three-part series where Erin is joined by business and leadership coach Jess Joswick to discuss perfectionism in all its forms, especially the ones we don’t want to confront.

With a special emphasis on the habits and mindsets that seem “normal” but are actually perfectionism in disguise, this episode helps you to discover what your particular perfectionistic tendencies are and begin brainstorming their sustainable replacements.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework:

Ask yourself two questions, marinate on your responses, and journal specific actions steps you’ll take as a result:

1) Do I identify with perfectionism? (Have I been in tinkering mode on any project? Have I been thinking and thinking about a specific project or tasks that need to get off my plate?)

2) Is anyone on my team dealing with perfectionism? (Are they working a lot of long hours? Are they experiencing black and white thinking? Are they truly working more than anybody else on your team, but the results just aren't there?)

149: Why Perfectionism is Harmful for Leaders with Jess Joswick07 Mar 202300:22:26

You know when the project you’re working on is acceptable, maybe even good - but you can’t stop trying to repair it, more so to buy time rather than to actually improve it?

In this three-part episode, Erin is joined by business and leadership coach Jess Joswick to discuss perfectionism in all its forms, especially the ones we don’t want to confront.

Not only will you hear about the origins of perfectionism and how it impacts you personally, but how perfectionism trickles down into your team, the organization you lead, or the presence you have.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Get serious and still with these questions: Are you suffering from perfectionism? Have you been negatively impacted by a leader who led (or still leads) with perfectionism? How did that impact you/how does it still impact you today? Spend some time with no music, no podcasts, and really sit with these questions. Journal or meditate about it.

148: 14 Things That I'm Loving and Make My Life Better01 Mar 202300:45:44

Self-care isn’t just about the shiny new facial brush or heated spin class that’s all over Instagram.

Self-care is about the Yeti coffee mug that helps you enter into the WFH mood each morning because it serves you and makes a difference in your morning mindset.

You deserve to invest in the self-care products that make you feel good, give you something to look forward to, and give you a physical reminder that you have your own back.

In today’s episode, Erin shares her favorite physical, mental, and spiritual self-care products that help fill her cup so she can give to others. These aren’t the woo woo, Instagram-worthy, aesthetically-pleasing products. These are the products that vary from flashy to old-school that work for Erin and her lifestyle and will get you thinking about what self-care products will work for yours.

ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Take today's list from the episode and consider one or two products that inspired you. Incorporate them into your routine in a way that works for you, or use them as launchpads for different products that will help you frame your day with self-care. If you decide your self-care routine doesn’t need any new products, know that the most important takeaway from this episode is that you matter and you deserve self-care in all of its forms.

Dr. Kataria is a medical doctor from Mumbai, India. Popularly known as the Guru of Giggling, Dr. Kataria is the founder of Laughter Yoga Clubs - a movement that started in 1995 with just five people in a public park in Mumbai.  Amazed by the number of studies showing profound physiological and psychological benefits of laughter, Dr. Kataria decided to find a way to deliver these benefits to his patients and the rest of the world. The result is Laughter Yoga, a unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing, which allows anyone to laugh without using humor, reduce stress, and increase productivity.

Laughter Yoga has grown into a worldwide movement of more than 6,000 laughter yoga clubs in over 60 countries. It's spread rapidly in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, Middle East, Southeast Asia, China, and Africa. This new concept has been widely covered by prestigious publications like Time Magazine, National Geographic, and the Wall Street Journal. Laughter Yoga has been featured on CNN, BBC US Networks, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Now Dr. Kataria is a keynote, motivational, and inspirational speaker for companies, corporations, and organizations all over the world. He's also a corporate consultant for holistic health stress management, team building leadership, peak performance, and communication skills.

269: What Are the Most Effective Ways to Navigate Difficult Conversations at Work? A Conversation with Justin Jones-Fosu18 Dec 202400:39:27

What if the seeds you plant today could transform the world tomorrow?

In today's episode, Justin Jones-Fosu challenges leaders to leave their "home base," embrace curiosity, and cultivate inclusion to create real impact—at work and beyond.

Justin Jones-Fosu, founder of Work. Meaningful., joins Erin to share powerful lessons about leadership, communication, and humanity.

Drawing from his personal story and years of experience, Justin teaches leaders how to navigate challenging conversations while fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.

Whether you’re a seasoned leader or someone looking to improve team dynamics, this episode is packed with actionable insights and strategies to create more meaningful, inclusive workplaces.

Here are the 5 main takeaways from Erin’s conversation with Justin:

1. Leave Your Home Base

Justin's mother taught him the importance of experiencing diverse perspectives. Leaders must step outside their comfort zones to understand and connect with others.

2. Plant Seeds That Last

Leadership is a long-term investment. The actions you take and values you demonstrate today will impact people’s lives, even years down the road.

3. Embrace the Power of Three

Instead of surface-level conversations, ask three probing questions to deepen understanding and help others feel truly heard and valued.

4. Challenge Your Perspective

Justin introduced the "Circles of Grace Challenge," encouraging leaders to intentionally engage with ideas and people they might not align with to build empathy and broaden their worldview.

5. Lead with Curiosity, Not Conclusions

Avoid assumptions during difficult conversations. Approach with curiosity by asking questions and truly listening to uncover different perspectives.

Conclusion

Justin's insights remind us that meaningful leadership goes beyond results—it’s about cultivating relationships, broadening perspectives, and creating a lasting impact. By stepping outside our comfort zones and practicing deep listening, leaders can foster teams where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to contribute their best.

If this episode spoke to you, we’d love for you to share it with someone who may benefit from its insights. Send the link to this episode in a text/email while you’re thinking about it. :)
