Christmas Special 202407 Dec 202400:29:07

We have snuck in an extra episode of our Spill The Tea podcast for Christmas and it’s full of sparkle, so settle in with a mince pie and a mug of tea.

This week we meet Big Lil and the Headscarf revolutionaries, four women who in 1968 changed the face of fishing in the UK proving that when women get together positive change can happen.

There is also a pitch perfect musical recital as we play Christmas carols on the kazoo (earplugs optional for that section!)

In the Book Collective we conclude our book for the series, Miranda July’s All Fours. Did it deliver? Listen in to find out.

Plus, we asked you, “What’s the best thing about life after menstruation?” Your insightful, positive answers didn’t disappoint!

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

Finally, we tackle the idea of the “Menopause Militia” with a frank and lively chat about us ‘women of a certain age’, and leave you with a thoughtful nugget to ponder over the holidays.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! There’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a thought for the week.

So, go and get the kettle on and settle in for our weekly collective chat while we spill the tea!

You can also watch the episode on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

Sea Swimming & Sewage with Campaigner Jo Bateman28 Sep 202400:41:44

In our new series we will be spilling the tea on topics that affect our health and well-being from the extra-ordinary women that are raising their voices for positive change. And what better way to kick-off our new look Series than with campaigner Jo Bateman.

Jo is campaigning for cleaner seas and is taking South West Water to court; the water company have repeatedly dumped sewage into the sea preventing Jo (and many others) from sea swimming. For Jo sea swimming has helped her both physically and mentally, but the red flag has been flying for most of the summer on Exmouth beach warning swimmers not to enter the water because you will quite literally be swimming in shit. An empty beach has also impacted massively on businesses that have suffered financially. Jo is not backing down; she is fighting for her right to swim in clean waters and to keep the environment safe for other water users and wildlife. She says, ‘it is simply unacceptable, in the 21st century you can land a spacecraft on Mars but we haven’t got a sewage system that disposes of our waste without polluting the rivers and oceans.’

We also launch our Book Collective with our new book for series 11, All Fours by Miranda July.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We chat about our week, there’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a quote.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, go and get the kettle on and settle in for our weekly collective chat while we sill the tea!

Feminism, Politics and Art with illustrator Rosie Johnson19 Feb 202201:23:51
This week we sort out all the worlds problems with our guest Rosie Johnson of Rosie Johnson Illustrates. We are very lucky that Rosie is based here in Devon but her creative talents are an international success, producing Prints, cards, fashion, Jewellery and pins. She also does design work, book illustration and as if that’s not enough she’s invented a great card game for children, Natter Matters. We get angry this week at topics in the news, especially footballers and their sponsors and how raising our voice can be very cathartic. There’s fashion news – are we ready to embrace the most uncomfortable item of clothing that’s making a come-back? Our #wheresmyclinic campaign for a Menopause Clinic in Devon has now launched a website with the petition and template letters to send to your MP and local CCG. https://menopauseclinicfordevon.co.uk In the Book Collective we are on our penultimate week of Bernadine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other. The Foodie continues with our theme this month, Chinese cuisine.   Rosie was a primary school teacher for 15 years, But has been illustrating for nearly 6 years. A self confessed bleeding heart lefty snowflake who loves marmite who invented a card game called Natter Matters to help children and adults talk through difficult emotional subjects. We created our own Natter Matters Womenkind Collective styl-ey and discussed all the important things in life in Rosie’s unique way. To find Rosie’s online shop click on the link. https://rosiejohnsonillustrates.com   The Book Collective continue with Bernadine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other, the grammatically different book is so beautiful how the characters are all entwined and we discuss how our opinions of the characters change from the start and end of their chapters. It’s raw and totally enthralling read that every woman should read.   It’s another cooking day for Jinty in the Foodie this week, and it’s a very tasty and nutritious salt and pepper tofu stir fry.   Our Wine Collective as we approach the end of the month is announced with Lou choosing Trivento Malbec a well-balanced velvety red from Argentina and priced in supermarkets around £9.  Our WI learning to dance Cameo’s Candy Dance routine, and it’s marginally better this week although there is still an issue with knowing our left foot from our right!   To sign our petition to get a Menopause Clinic here in Devon click on the link: https://www.change.org/p/wheresmyclinic   For further information about our campaign head over to our website: https://menopauseclinicfordevon.co.uk--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenkindcollectivepodcast/message

Turning the tables on Menopause with Ruby Walsh05 Feb 202201:28:41
In this week’s podcast Jinty and Lou get interviewed by their guest Ruby Walsh who is researching for her book. We speak openly and honestly about the menopause through the dark times to now being able to understand what are bodies were going through and how women are not considered valid in society once they can no longer produce children. We look at some of the more unusual menopausal symptoms in an A-Z of symptoms and  it’s not all about hot flushes and brain fog!We discuss the positives of friendship and how through the pandemic we might have unwittingly ‘pruned’ our friends and Jinty has some breaking fashion news, we also discuss Ricky Gervais’s Afterlife and the lasting legacy the series has given us. Do you know where ‘Pinch, Punch first of the month’ came from? Neither did we until Jinty investigated! There’s a new book for The Book Collective, Girl, Woman. Other by Bernadine Evaristo who we discovered after reading The Female Lead, we loved her story and are looking forward to reading up to page 150 for the next week.In the foodie we celebrate Chinese New-Year with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. And there’s a new WI from one of the Collective. Our guest this week is 24 year old Ruby Walsh who wants to find out more about peri menopause, she asked if she could interview us, well obviously we agreed - mainly because menopausal women are so often only written about in the very stereotypical way- hot flushes and being chaotic! And although both these things may happen it certainly does not represent most women. We thought it would be nice to chat with Ruby on the podcast so we can find out more about her and she can turn the tables and ask us some questions about our own menopause which we thought may resonate with some of you. It’s an open conversation and no topic is off limits. Ruby says, ‘as women, we experience a lot of pressure in our lives, from being “too this'', or “too that”, reminded of the time-restraints, that our fertile clock is ticking and that, if you are not fertile, your value as a woman is diminished. We go through stages in our lives, constantly changing and evolving, and yet one very important change, is not spoken about enough, especially not inter-generationally, and that is menopause.’ In the Book Collective we are looking forward to starting Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo, the Booker judges rated this book as ‘passionate, razor sharp, brimming with energy and humour, a must read about modern Britain and womanhood…dazzling.’  We are going to read up to page 150 for next week’s book discussion. For the Foodie as it was Chinese New-Year when we recorded the podcast, Jinty prepared a traditional Chinese tea ceremony  - we learn the correct way to drink the tea and how to appreciate the flavours. There’s a new WI and it’s from Elena one of the Collective and she has invited us to learn a dance routine…as we both have no coordination it’s going to be a fun month dancing! As our campaign for a Menopause Clinic in Devon begins to build momentum we have a new email address for anyone to send their testimonies into about menopause care in Devon: menopasueclinicdc@gmail.comWe also have new hashtag #wheresmyclinic A petition is coming soon along with a campaign Facebook group Stay in touch Jinty and Lou --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenkindcollectivepodcast/message

Do you stress about presents, family and cooking the perfect Christmas dinner? Well, you can worry no more, we have the top 25 tips to help you achieve a stress free Christmas. In the Book Collective we conclude Bella Mackie’s How To Kill Your Family and there’s a perfect twist to the ending of this magnificent book. In the Foodie Collective we continue this month’s theme of Easy Christmas Treats, and once again Jinty has been cooking up a storm. We talk about grief and the loss of a loved one coming up to the festive period and how to get through this difficult and challenging time. How did you get on with the WI? We ask Lou and the Collective how Jinty’s challenge from Mel Robbins is going. Grief is hard at any time throughout the year but can be especially difficult around Christmas time, Jinty discusses her grief from losing her dear dad this year and what she’s planning on doing to keep his memory firmly in the family this Christmas. Christmas can be the most stressful time of the year, so we decided to try and help you achieve a stress-free Christmas by going through the top 25 stresses most people encounter over the festive period, there’s some fun and swearing and also an underlying message of making sure you ease the pressure off yourself, we have tips from the Collective to help and they really resonate. And if all else fails you can do exactly what one of the Collective do and just drink Baileys! You can watch the Stress-Free Christmas Tips on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/channel/UCFgmHLcdx28eco-XlkWYwUA In the Book Collective we conclude Bella Mackie’s How To Kill Your Family, and there’s a great twist at the end, could this lead onto a sequel? Bella has written the perfect narcissistic protagonist with Grace, she is an insightful and page turning author. Our new book for January is The Female Lead, volume 2, We Rise By Lifting Others by Edwina Dunn. The Foodie this month gives us easy Christmas treats and Jinty has made Polish cake from her mum’s recipe, but it’s not quite the traditional Polish cake, it’s the most delicious tiffin based cake and it’s also no-bake and vegan! Anyone can make it! The WI challenge from Jinty to Lou and the Collective is working really well, even if sometimes Lou forgets she has now added a new addition to give herself a positive comment when she’s high-fiving in the mirror, please give it a go and tell yourself how beautiful and amazing you are…it really does work! Don’t forget to join us for our Christmas Party next Sunday where we will be rounding up the year, talking to some amazing guests and drinking and eating probably far too much! The Christmas In A Nutshell is available from @spacemasks on Instagram or: https://spacemasks.com  for £5 with all proceeds going to Whitstable RNLI. Living with Type 1 Diabetes with Daisy Hockings-Thompson05 Dec 202101:26:26
Growing up with Type 1 Diabetes In this week’s podcast we talk to a woman who has grown up with Type 1 Diabetes, Daisy Hockings-Thompson, Lou’s daughter. Daisy talks to us about her diagnosis, the teenage years and how even before getting out of bed in the morning it affects her every-day life.We look at how hormones affect insulin when menstruating and during menopause.  In the Book Collective we find out what’s happening in this instalment of Bella Mackie’s book How To Kill Your Family, has Grace the main character killed everyone yet? The Foodie is all about Easy Christmas treats and we taste some exceptionally tasty treats from Jinty, and finally there’s a new WI for Lou and the Collective from Jinty which is Free, but will we be able to do it? There’s some exciting news we have launched a YouTube Channel for the podcast, interviews and The 2 Deb’n Maids. Our guest this week is a very special one, Daisy Hockings-Thompson is Lou’s daughter and a type 1 diabetic. Type 1 diabetes affects 8% of the population of the UK, it is caused when the body’s own immune system destroys cells within the pancreas and the pancreas stops producing a hormone called insulin which we need to give us energy. Daisy talks about her diagnosis at 10 years old and the troubled teenage years and the constant monitoring she has to do every day just to be able to get out of bed. We learn about hypos and hypers and the fatal consequence of both if left untreated. We talk about how hormones affect insulin levels during menstruation and during the menopause and we also learn about the huge financial divide for people that can afford the latest technologies and how even in the USA type 1 diabetics are dying because they cannot afford insulin. You can watch Daisy’s full interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel, where you can also catch up with those 2Deb’n maids, Flotsam and Jetsom. In the Book Collective this week we are a little behind so we will catch-up with How To Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie next week, Lou didn’t want to put any spoilers out there for jinty! We also announce our new book for January 2022. The Foodie theme is easy Christmas treats and once again Jinty has cooked up some easy (vegan) gingerbread treats and they were yoga poses, they’ll make you sit down and eat them with a mug of tea, just what you need leading up to Christmas.See below for recipe There’s a new WI from Jinty to Lou and The Collective that she has been trialling for the past week, it’s all about self-love and positivity and we think you’re going to love it. Please do subscribe to our YouTube channel where you can see our 2 Deb’n maids and catch our latest interviews.YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFgmHLcdx28eco-XlkWYwUAIngredients•1tbsp ground chia seed•140g vegan block•100g dark muscovado sugar•3tbsp maple or golden syrup•350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting•1tsp bicarbonate of soda•1tbsp ground ginger•2tsp ground cinnamonMethod-•STEP 1Combine the chia seed with 2½ tbsp water, and leave to thicken for 5 mins. Line two baking sheets with baking parchment. Mix the vegan block, sugar, bicarb, spices and flour in a bowl with your hands and crumble until it resembles sand. Stir in the chia mix and syrup. Mix together until it comes together into a smooth dough. Who has time to chill it? I didn’t but you may, if so chill for 45 mins.
•STEP 2Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm thickness. Stamp out as many gingerbread people or Yogi’s, as you can, then re-roll the trimmings and continue until all the dough is used. Put on the sheets and bake for 12 mins until golden. Leave to cool on the sheets for 10 mins, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Will keep in an airtight container for two weeks.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenkindcollectivepodcast/message

Women and prison with Raina Dunne13 Jul 202401:15:16

We conclude series 10 with an incredible woman who’s story we were privileged to hear.

Earlier this year we attended the launch of the West Country Women Awards in Plymouth where we met todays guest, who blew us away with her determination to help others through sharing her own story of overcoming shame and finding purpose after being released from prison.

The inspirational Raina Dunne has been through unimaginable life experiences from a very early age, yet she bares no bitterness just an intense desire to speak up and raise awareness of a system that doesn’t work and how underprivileged and disenfranchised women are being completely let down.

But thanks to the charity Gifted Women, women like Raina are finding their way back into society, their aim is to see women thriving in employment or be enrolled in further education and this is achieved in the woman’s own time and at a pace that feels realistic and sustainable.

Raina tells us ‘I want to help those women, the women that have been hurt, or been damaged by society, they carry that pain, they just need a little extra help, someone to look at them and see them’.

You can watch the unedited chat on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

*TRIGGER WARNING*

Our conversation with Raina contains some difficult content, such as addiction, violence, exploitation and rape.

We also chat about our week, there’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a quote from Jinty to round off the series.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, settle in for this hour(ish) podcast full of meaningful chat.

Ayurveda, marmalade, and brain fog with Guest Sunita Passi28 Nov 202100:51:20
In this weeks Womenkind Collective podcast we talk to the fabulous Sunita Passi about her new book, The Dr Won’t See You Now, she explains why there was a need for a book about the Ayurvedic healing system now from the impact of Covid-19. There’s a great foodie for stir-it-up Sunday, but it does go a bit haywire! We find out the Cambridge dictionary’s word of the year is, and it’s a good one. We find out how Lou got on with her WI and Jinty has been to the cinema and has a movie review. There’s also a story about Frank Cooper’s marmalade and Lou’s not happy! Sunita Passi is an Ayurvedic practitioner who has written a book, The Dr Won’t See You Now, advocating now is the time to heal healthcare, it’s a wake-up call to the power of Ayurveda. Sunita was an investigative journalist prior to becoming an Ayurvedic practitioner, she has put her passion and knowledge into this book, which is accessible and a great entry level book, especially for those that are despondent with the health care system as it is at the moment. The book is interactive with standalone chapters it has wit and knowledge, there’s a dosha quiz at the end of the book to help determine your dosha. Sunita is a great guest who shares her passion and knowledge with the Collective. The Foodie that both Jinty and Lou bought all the ingredients for their Christmas puddings but hadn’t read the recipe properly, find out what they both did wrong and both are blaming the menopause…..so they’re going to sort their cock-up out and stir-it-up this coming Sunday. Jinty brings a jar of Frank Cooper’s marmalade in and we find out Sarah-Jane, Frank’s wife actually made the marmalade but was not recognised on the jar, is it time for change? There’s no Wine Collective this month as we are saving the best tipples for our Christmas party on December 19th. The Book Collective, get to grips with Grace and her narcissistic ways, will she get out of prison? Will she complete her final murder? It’s quite hilarious and is definitely a page turner. Jinty has been to the movies and watched the latest Marvel film, Eternals, it’s long but very much worth watching, Angelina Jolie stars and is a little forgetful in places, is this a nod to the menopause? Well worth watching with a fantastic story line. The WI about kindness makes Lou think about stereotyping especially where she drinks her coffee and when you do an act of kindness you should not have intention, it should be selfless, and should it just be for someone who cannot afford a coffee? Long Covid and Menopause with Lyn Curtis20 Nov 202101:09:58
There are over 2 million people suffering from Long Covid in the UK and 118 million people worldwide. We are still living within a pandemic, it is still claiming countless lives around the World, this week a report in the medical journal, The Lancet, states that Covid-19 has bought health inequalities into sharp focus on an international scale. In this week’s podcast we speak to a Covid survivor who is now suffering from long Covid, Lyn, she talks openly about the daily struggles she has living with this debilitating and still being researched condition, Lyn is also in peri menopause and is involved in research with Cambridge University. The Book Collective continue with How to Kill Your Family with Bella Mackie and the story is unfolding and taking on hilarious twists and turns from the protagonist, Grace. The Foodie get ready to stir-it-up this Sunday with a delicious Christmas pudding from the wonderful Nigella Lawson. And we find out what your lockdown purchases were with some fabulous comments from the Collective. Co-author of the Lancet report, Dr Louise Newson, GP and renowned menopause specialist, said: ‘For far too long women’s health has been a totally neglected area of research.’‘I would urge all healthcare professionals, particularly those working in dedicated Long COVID clinics, to ask “could these symptoms be due to the menopause or perimenopause”?But is it dangerous to be labelled with one or the other, what happens when there is a crossover ?We put this question to Lyn Curtis who is in peri-menopause and has been suffering from Long Covid for over 18 months. From the studies with Cambridge University and from the support groups she is part of for Long Covid we learn vulnerability to and mortality from acute Covid-19 infection is higher in men, whereas Long Covid disproportionately affects women, we start the conversation of trying to find out why? Lyn discusses the social and economic facts that surround Long Covid and why gender plays a part in symptoms that can be looked at as hormonal in men and women, but not in children? From Lyn’s interview we look at why we are at the tip of the iceberg for long term care and future conditions surrounding Long Covid. So what was your lockdown purchase? We find out some hilarious ones from the Collective, including what Lou and Jinty bought. Lou also recommends a great film, Freedom Writers and researches the story behind the film about gangs in Long Beach USA and a teacher that gives them tools and hope for a future. The Book Collective are in the middle of Bella Mackie’s How To Kill your Family, we read up to chapter 11 and find out why Grace is actually in prison, we also get an inside angle on the sex parties, and her plans for murder….it’s dark and so very funny. We are reading up to chapter 14 for the next Book Collective which takes a week off next week. Stir-it-up Sunday is on Sunday 21st November when this podcast lands and we go full on Christmas with a delicious Christmas Pudding recipe from Nigella Lawson, and Jinty plans to make a vegan version. Jinty sets a WI (weekly invite) to Lou and the rest of the Collective, as it was National Kindness Day last week, & Jinty gives us a challenge to put our kindness into practice. Alzheimer’s, more than a memory with Liz Ayre.07 Nov 202101:07:48
Liz Ayre & her two daughters are making sure that their loving Father & husband, Mike, is more than a memory by campaigning & raising awareness for the disease that took Mike from them at the young age of 51. This week we speak to Liz, a phenomenal women, who cared for her husband when he was diagnosed at 46 with young onset Alzheimer’s, whilst living abroad and bringing up two teenage daughters. She shares her story with the Collective, and we find out what little support is around for families caring for their loved ones with dementia. Our Book Collective begins Bella Mackie’s brilliant first novel, How to Kill Your Family and we announce our Stir it up November Foodie. There’s a new WI from one of the Collective which happily does not involve us taking our clothes off! Our guest Liz Ayre shares her story of caring for her loved ones with Dementia. Dementia is the umbrella term for over 200 forms of changes in, memory, thinking or reasoning, within that umbrella term sits Alzheimer’s. Liz nursed both her husband with young onset Alzheimer’s, and her mother with, Dementia with Lewy bodies, whilst bringing up a young teenage family. We learn how friends become a much needed support system. Liz highlights the lack of funding for carers and we learn that specialist dementia nurses are available in certain areas, Admiral nurses, but they are completely funded by donations. We look at the government cuts to social care funding in the budget, and the desperate need for support for families. Liz is using her knowledge from her personal experiences to help others in the same position and she signposts to where you can find help. The Book Collective will start reading How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie, her first novel and it’s already dark but very funny. We start to read to chapter 7 on page 96. Have you heard of Stir it up Sunday? Nope neither had Lou, but Jinty explains this tradition is in preparation for Christmas, so this month’s foodie is all about using up food and also cooking to traditional family recipes! There’s a new WI from one of the Collective and it’s all about self-care, Nicky has started a new Venture, vegan candles, and we can’t wait to support her. The Book Collective finish the last chapters of Tarana Burke’s Unbound and there are tears but a deeper understanding of why the Me Too movement is one of the most important movements of our time. Jinty and Lou discuss what gives them confidence in mid-life and there are some great comments from the Collective. As it’s the end of the month it’s Wine Collective and we reveal our alcoholic and non-alcoholic choices. Jinty went to Parliament Square on Friday October 29th for MP Carolyn Harris’s Menopause bill’s second reading, with some amazing results. Find out how she got on at the end of the podcast.Sophie Cleere is a life coach who aims to help women feel empowered in their life and bodies, she admits her journey through life has been a crazy mash-up of spiritual and personal growth and made a total fucking mess along the way! We talk about role models in our lives and the impact that has on us through the generations and as we grow-up the need for external validation. Sophie talks about her peri menopause and how it affected her life, recognising her symptoms earlier than most, and deciding to take body identical HRT. We discuss sea swimming and the benefits for women on immersing themselves in the cool waters, Sophie loves a naked swim and finds it totally liberating, Jinty and Lou consider this…Sophie is a true advocate for mid-life women and gives us 3 of her tips to help every person through their mid-life journey, we should learn to love our bodies and embrace the beautiful beings we are. The Book Collective complete Tarana Burke’s Unbound, a truly beautiful memoir, there were tears from both Jinty and Lou in the final chapters, when Tarana realises her growth from the 7 year old who was raped by an older boy, when she eventually sees him again with his own family, he does not recognise her and her mother says, ‘He didn’t recognise you because you turned out to be a smart, beautiful, accomplished women despite him trying to take that away from you.’We announce our new book for the next month, How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie, a funny, sharp, dark and twisted novel…..we can’t wait to get started! As it’s the end of the month we introduce our Wine Collective and this month’s non-alcoholic choice from Jinty is Jukes Cordialities No6. Lou opts for a Marks & Spencer’s classic red No38, Pinot Noir from New Zealand, it’s a vegan medium bodied fruity red and is a great compliment to your Sunday Roast. Priced at £10 a flavoursome Sunday treat! Jinty once again has been busy in the kitchen, this time chopping her nuts and seeds for a tasty bowl of goodness to compliment the wine Collective. We finds out how Lou’s WI is going with her sleep and the B complex she is now taking, will there finally be a good night’s sleep for Lou? And, more positive news as Jinty gives you a report from Parliament Square, where she attended the Menopause rally. Making Menopause Matter24 Oct 202101:01:54
As it was World Menopause Day on October 18th, we talk about how the generations of women before us had to suffer, the hideous medicines they were told to take and the Doctors believing that a clitoridectomy would solve the hysteria issues surrounding women of a certain age. One woman as we find out was not going to be silenced, she had a voice and through desperate times she continued to use it. Did you know that there are some animals that go through menopause too? In the Book Collective we get to learn more about Tarana Burke’s life in her superb memoir Unbound, the rape, sexual abuse and harassment she went through.Jinty has been in the kitchen again this week with a sweet delicious and menopause friendly treat. Jinty talks about bones and osteoporosis as we discuss world menopause day.The aging population of women are at risk of breaks from simple falls due to osteoporosis. We learn what we can do now to help improve our bones ready for old age. The Book Collective continue with Unbound by Tarana Burke – we discuss cultural and life differences and the struggle she had as she was growing up. This is a book that will definitely be re-visited throughout life, a courageous story that will change the world. We will conclude the final chapters next week. For World menopause day we wanted to make menopause matter and research how the generations of women before us were treated through their menopause. Jinty discovered a brilliant woman called Elizabeth Packard, the subject of Kate Moore’s book ‘The Woman who could not be silenced’ who was born in the 19thC and would not be silenced by her husband for having a voice and an opinion of her own. Did you know there are some animals that go through the menopause and live in a matriarchal society? Also, we learn that women in the 19thC were more likely to be put in an asylum during menopause and have to endure a hideous concoction of medicines including lead injections into their vulvas and cyanide and opium drinks? There are a lot of dark and truly mind blowing facts that we discuss this week and we thank the women who would not be silenced.A fascinating dive in to Women’s History and why now is the time to #makemenopausematter. Please sign the petition which is calling for 1. All GP’s to receive mandatory menopause training.2. Better Support for women in the workplace3. Menopause to be part of the school RSE curriculum (this has already been achieved).https://www.change.org/p/make-menopause-matter-in-healthcare-the-workplace-and-education-makemenopausematter This week saw the final amount for our WI for Women’s Aid finish with an absolutely amazing total which we reveal on the podcast, we cannot thank the Collective enough for their generosity for this amazing cause that will go a long way in helping women out of abusive situations.  Jinty gives Lou a new WI this week and she’s very grateful it doesn’t involve any exertion! Our wine for next weeks Wine collective will be on our Instagram pageWorlds best brownie recipe;https://mrshollingsworths.com/2017/01/11/chewy-gooey-walnut-brownies/--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenkindcollectivepodcast/message

Pelvic floor health with Jane Simpson17 Oct 202101:21:37
This week’s guest is the wonderful Jane Simpson, author of The Pelvic Floor Bible.Jane is starting a pelvic floor revolution & we love it, she talks to us about Pelvic Floor dysfunction which can lead to varying types of incontinence, prolapse, constipation &more, particularly in menopause. Breaking news- You don’t have to put up with it!Jane Simpson is a continence nurse specialist and has had her own private practice for more than 20 years where she treats patients with all forms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Do you ever pee a little bit when you laugh, cough or sneeze? Are you getting up during the night to go to the toilet? All these things could be symptoms of your oestrogen beginning to deplete in peri menopause….and it won’t go away on its own!Jane answers questions from the Collective, we learn why pelvic floor exercises are so important but are you doing them correctly? We talk about the pelvic floor revolution that needs to happen in the UK, about pelvic floor care after pregnancy and why this will help you during the menopause. No Taboos are left unturned here - we also talk Bowels, Wind, Prolapse & Sex. Find out what you can do if you already have a pelvic floor dysfunction or how you may prevent one.Honestly ALL folks need to hear what Jane has to say.The Book Collective continue reading ‘Untamed’ by Tarana Burke, a beautiful and honest memoir from the founder of the MeToo movement. We talk about low histamine food in this Menopause month in the Foodie CollectiveThere’s a movie review for the Collective for No Time To Die, but does the movie pass the Bechdel test ? A new era for Bond? We discuss. As we come to the end of our WI, we ask the Collective if they have a new WI for us! We progress through the thought provoking ‘Untamed’ by Tarana Burke we learn about how she survived her teenage years in the Bronx and her first insight into being a leader and a woman with a voice. There’s a beautiful moment when Tarana finds her voice when the class talk about Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman a pivotal moment in her life. We went to the movies and watched the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die. We absolutely loved it! As two women bought up with Bond, the latest film shone out from the old misogyny of Bond, a cast of strong capable women that did not need a man to come to their rescue, let’s hope we are in a new era for this evocative character. The Foodie Collective discuss histamine intolerance, the symptoms are so similar to the Menopause and if you have a histamine intolerance Jinty goes through the food you can and cannot eat with an analogy from Dr Sarah Ball. (Recipe on our Instagram profile). As we come to the end of our WI 16 sea swims for Women’s Aid, we ask if there is weekly invite or challenge you would like to give us, although Jinty has flatly refused crocheting.Thank you to everyone who has donated to our challenge every penny will help women out of abusive relationships.Jane’s book - https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Jane-Simpson/The-Pelvic-Floor-Bible--Everything-You-Need-to-Know-to-Pr/23566588?wgu=10671_187205_16341334622279_81511549ef&wgexpiry=1641909462&utm_source=webgains&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_campaign=187205Histamine intolerance resource https://d2931px9t312xa.cloudfront.net/menopausedoctor/files/information/472/Histamine%20Intolerance%20addition.pdfDr Tina Peers https://www.drtinapeers.com/histamine-intoleranceEmma Ellice-Flints low histamine cookbook https://shop.emmasnutrition.com/collections/all/products/low-histamine-cookbook?variant=39663531425989Hollie Guard safety app for women https://hollieguard.com/Thank you for listening If you enjoyed it please leave a review and share. How safe are we? With Women’s Aid10 Oct 202101:13:38
In a week where the man who murdered Sarah Everard was sentenced and Sabina Nessa’s killer was arrested, we look at how safe women are, in all aspects of their lives. We speak to Kat from Women’s Aid about the work they are doing to ensure women have a safe place to live, how the money raised from the 1.6 Women’s Aid Challenge will go to help countless women and their children living with abuse. We also speak to a woman who is standing up to sexual harassment in a workplace with deep rooted misogyny, she is fighting for the right to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. We start reading ‘Unbound’ by Tarana Burke and begin to get to know the powerful woman she is today from her traumatic early years, and our Foodie Collective cooks up a dish high in phytoestrogens which is extremely tasty! And as we come to the end of our WI 1.6 sea swimming challenge for Women’s Aid, we reveal our total to date from the donations we have received from the amazing Collective. We have been appalled at what is coming out of the press in the last week about language used around rape, how police forces around the UK need to be accountable for the heinous actions of Sarah Everard’s killer. The total lack of understanding of women’s fear, they might as well have been talking from another planet, yes, we’re talking about the infamous Kit Malthouse and Phillip Allot both men In extremely powerful positions. Women’s Aid is a charity it is a grassroots federation working together to provide life-saving services in England and build a future where domestic abuse is not tolerated. Our guest, Kat, is a senior support worker with Women’s Aid and she joins Jinty for a talk about the work they do, the statistics for domestic abuse in England and Wales are shocking and we get to know what our fundraising is doing to help this charity. Sexual harassment in the workplace is sadly, nowhere near a thing of the past, we speak to a brave woman who is standing up and fighting against sexual abuse and harassment as she tries to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. Sam talks about the deep rooted misogyny she has had to deal with while working as a gas engineer in a company that allows women to be treated as objects rather than giving them space to learn and grow their careers. The Book Collective crack the spine of Tarana Burke’s ‘Unbound’ a powerful memoir from the founder and activist behind the Me Too movement. In the opening chapters we learn about Tarana’s life and the rape and abuse she suffered at the hands of older boys and how a woman’s words made sure she never told of her ordeal. It’s a painfully brilliant start to this book.Next week we will be reading from Breath Again to and including Indelible. The Foodie Collective are still in Menopause food month and Jinty, once again cooks a delicious dish this week of Sticky Tofu which is full of phytoestrogens! She explains about each ingredient and how you can cook this yourself. https://www.sixvegansisters.com/2020/03/19/sweet-sour-tofu/ We reveal the total for our Women’s Aid challenge and are so thankful and humbled by every donation. Her approach is holistic and as such she has a wide knowledge of therapies and medications that can help a headache. As it’s Suicide Prevention day on September 10th we talk to a phenomenal woman who turned tragedy into a charity to support families with suicide bereavement, Alison Jordan is the founder of Pete’s Dragons. After losing her little brother Pete to suicide in 2010, Alison realised there was no support for the bereaved families so, after much fundraising and talking to others going through the same, she changed that set up.Pete’s Dragons now help families across counties with counselling, therapeutic support, family days, holidays, practical advice and so very much more. As Alison explains they have grown exponentially and now also offer brilliant Suicide Prevention trading courses and get referrals from the NHS.We think Alison is a pretty amazing woman but she is very humble and gives full credit to her team at Pete’s Dragons along with the volunteer dragons. You will want to hear her story. We all feel so helpless when we hear of a death by Suicide but if you’ve ever wondered what you could do or could have done Alison has some advice that may very well save someone’s life. This is why we need to use the word Suicide, talk about it because it happens! We discuss our week and there’s a question that Jinty puts to the Collective that she needs your help with and there’s also a lot of rage in the Collective with Texas/Gilead and the patriarchy. The Book Collective get to know the language of the Fan, who knew it was a thing, but Fern Riddell departs her amazing knowledge in this month’s book, Sex Lessons From History. We find out what the word ‘frig’ means and also what fuck-wit Freud thought about masturbation! In the Foodie this week we goes through Sam Evans from Jo-Divines’ list of aphrodisiac foods and there’s some interesting ones. Who knew what an almond could do for you…? Womenkind Collective are this month raising funds for Women’s Aid 1.6 Challenge by facing their own fears and attempting to complete 16 sea swims. Lou only learned to swim last year and Jinty has a huge fear about the sea, but together they want to raise £160. How to breathe for better health with Johanna McWeeny05 Sep 202101:19:18
In this week’s podcast Jinty and Lou talk breathing. An involuntary action which we do without much consideration of how each breath we take can affect our bodies and our mental state. We talk to a breathing expert, Johanna McWeeney, a trained breathing instructor. Jinty gives us some breathing exercises to try that will aid sleep and calm anxiety.  The Book Collective hots up with this week’s 3 chapters from Sex Lessons From History by Fern Riddell, we also get a tasty lurve Foodie and there’s a WI challenge that take both Jinty and Lou completely out of their comfort zone. Johanna McWeeney is a talented classical musician and journalist , she is also a copywriter and ghost writer, specialising in health and wellness, she has written extensively about breathing for chronic health conditions. Johanna undertook the Oxygen Advantage Advanced Instructor Training this year and is now a breathing instructor. We welcome Johanna to the Collective and learn why we don’t just need oxygen when we breath but the benefits of the correct amount of carbon dioxide to help our organs and muscles. Our breathing changes at different times in our life and studies have shown correct breathing techniques can assist with hormonal changes in the body from menstruation through to menopause. One of the techniques we learn from Johanna is the importance of nasal breathing and the benefits this gives our bodies. We also talk mouth taping during sleep and it’s not what you might first think! There’s an array of benefits including curing snoring and helping with double chins! Johanna’s knowledge and her enthusiasm will have you running for the sleep tape. You will learn why conscious breathing is just as important as diet, exercise and sleep when we look at our overall well being or lifestyle, particularly in Menopause. The Book Collective talk through chapters , 3, 4 and 5 of Fern Riddell’s Sex Lesson s From History, there are some beautiful stories within these chapters including the first gender reassignment surgery that was carried out in 1906 by Magnus Hirschfeld a founding father of the field of sexology. Do you know what a Molly House is? We learn in chapter 3 why these establishments were a common part of life from the 18th century. Next week we read chapters, 6, 7 and 8, masturbation, flirtation and sex. This is definitely the book that keeps on giving! The Foodie Collective are still all about love food and things that can get you in the mood. Jinty makes a sharing board full of Mediterranean delights for you to make at home (they are also good for gut health). And do you know why we call them aphrodisiacs? And finally, our WI this week is a new one for the Collective we are raising money for Women’s Aid 1:6 challenge:https://www.womensaid.org.uk/get-involved/fundraise/challenge-events/ If you’ve enjoyed this podcast we would love it if you could buy us a Ko-Fi, you can also find extra content, photos, and updates. It helps us create quality content and sound. We really appreciate it. https://ko-fi.com/womenkindcollectivepodcastUp until March 2020 (pre-pandemic) 1.6 million women in England were subject to domestic violence, that’s 1.6 million too many. Lou has suggested that they both sea swim 16 times throughout September, something that takes both out of their comfort zone and will be a huge challenge to them both, did Jinty accept this challenge? There is now a Womenkind Collective Facebook page with a link on the events page for you to follow our progress, get involved or donate! Dr Fern Riddell discusses her book- Sex:Lessons from history22 Aug 202101:17:24
Jinty and Lou are back after a summer break for the second series of Womenkind Collective and they open with a very special guest, Fern Riddell, historian and author of the best-selling Sex Lessons From History. They have a wonderful conversation with Fern and not just about her new book! There’s plenty of Collective chat and we announce a new foodie, a new book and we conclude A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman. We find out what has happened during the summer break and discuss the battle of the cutlery drawers! And how we are now the Sandwich Generation. Dr Fern Riddell is a best-selling author and historian and is the main contributor on BBC’s Ripper Street. Fern is a wonderful, open and funny guest. For the entirety of human history, sex has never just been about reproduction. Statistically speaking, only one out of every thousand acts between a man and a woman will result in pregnancy. And as we know, sex does not solely take place between just men and women. So ; what is sex for?Come with Fern and Womenkind Collective as we uncover a bit about the sexual lives of our ancestors.Find out where the word fuck came from and what medieval writers used to describe sex in writings and poetry. Gender fluidity is not a modern concept, Fern explores LGBTQ+ communities through history and we meet amazing characters that are part of our sex history. She celebrates the naturalness and joy of sex, our bodies should be adored, not plastic or manipulated, she is honest and completely open and we learn so much from her.The conversation flowed into sex education for young people today and we talk about #everyonesinvited and how young people today are dealing with far more aggressive abuse from their peers and the stand they are taking against the abuse, we applaud the powerful girls of today. Thank-you Fern for a fabulous chat!Fern gives us her 3 sex lessons from history, she includes Victorian sex toys, and sex talk from the 15th and 16th Century. The Foodie Collective talk love and sex food, what turns you on in the kitchen? Oysters? Caviar? Champagne? Or does the sound of your partner eating make you want to scream? We ask what food gets the girls in the mood for lurve? There’s a new WI for Lou from Jinty, a poignant and important invite surrounded with gratitude. A letter of gratitude to someone in your life, who maybe changed it or helped you along the way. Who will Lou write to? The book Collective conclude A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman, Jinty has struggled with this book but it has come to her at a very emotional time in her life. The poetic prose and spirituality weaved beautifully right to the end of the book. The new book Sex Lessons From History by Fern Riddell starts next week for the Collective we will be reading this until the end of September. Menopause with Dr Sarah Ball04 Jul 202101:13:03
This week we have a special edition of the Womenkind Collective podcast it’s all about Menopause!Jinty and Lou talk to the amazing Dr Sarah Ball who answers all your questions on menopause, symptoms, HRT, and everything else we could fit into our hour with her. Do you know where your oestrogen receptors are in your body and why we need oestrogen? You will find all the answers in this podcast, Dr Sarah is fun and factual and we learned so much. There’s no book collective this week but Jinty let’s us know how she got on with her WI. Dr Sarah Ball is a GP with a special interest in menopause (both personal and professional), she works alongside Dr Louise Newson at Newson Health and has helped so many women understand their menopause journey & gain them access to treatment. We learn that in peri-menopause our ovaries are up and down like toilet seat, so blood tests do not show a true representation of what a women’s body is going through, we should instead look at our bodies especially our periods. We talk about risks and benefits of HRT, the different types, and who can take HRT.We find out that peri-menopause is actually the best time to replace our depleting hormones - there is a window of opportunity to take HRT that will massively help our bodies and brains. Dr Sarah kicks the myths out of the pitch with HRT and the study that caused the great debacle and caused so many women to walk away from treatment and suffer for years but the sex hormones we use today are the gold standard, body identical HRT made from wild yams. This really is a one-stop podcast for menopause! Jinty’s WI from one of the collective was to make sourdough with the starter, which she did, and it’s delicious! We learn some fabulous facts on sourdough and the benefits of eating this type of bread. The Book Collective is having a week off because we didn’t want you to miss anything Dr Sarah had to say, but we will continue with ‘A year of Marvellous Ways’ by Sarah Winman next week. Everyone’s Invited. Ofsted & Girls only Assemblies27 Jun 202101:17:00
In this weeks podcast Jinty and Lou discuss the Ofsted report about sexual harassment in primary and secondary schools that came from Everyone’s Invited, a website and Instagram page dedicated to reporting over 50,000 testimonies from survivors of the rape culture centered within schools. We speak to 3 women who learned first hand that sexualisation came directly from their schools. A new `book for the Book Collective this month, ‘A year of Marvellous Ways’ by Sarah Winman, We continue with Brain food with a delicious wholesome salad. Jinty and Lou discuss their WI’s and the Wine Collective pops open this month’s choices. From a comment made by Jinty’s daughter we uncover the girl only assemblies that they had to endure.Assemblies that put the responsibility squarely on the female for how boys and male teachers look at them.Wearing a coloured bra that might be seen through a white shirt and having a skirt a little too short, showing (as Nancy says) risqué knees, suddenly made them feel self aware and sexualised. We invite Millie, Nancy and Daisy into the Collective to talk about their experiences of the rape culture that is prevalent within schools. We talk about how wording such as frigid and Slut are commonly used by boys toward the girls. And how it is only now, a few years after leaving school, that they realise how it affected them.We ask the question why it took Ofsted 5 years to act on recommendations made by the governments Women’s and Equality Select Committee? The Book Collective talk about the new book, ‘A year of Marvellous Ways’ by Sarah Winman a beautiful story about an 89 year old woman called Marvellous, it’s set in Cornwall and is a poetic tale of love, loss and human spirit with a little magic. We prepare to read to the end of chapter 11. We continue with Brain Food for the Foodie Collective a tasty salad incorporating all that is good for the brain. The Wine Collective pops the cork and sip their way through this months choices, a white wine from France Picpoul Pinet and the non alcoholic alternative, Gimber a refreshing ginger drink, that has Jinty’s taste buds in a whirl. We report back on the WI’s with amazing results….except for Lou’s food diary! We have also entered a competition to win recording equipment and would love you to vote for us by clicking on this link…..https://www.myrodecast.com/Wine Collectivehttps://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/267931157Gimber non alcoholic on offer right now at https://www.planetorganic.com/products/gimber-500mlBook Collectivehttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Year-Marvellous-Ways-Richard-Bestseller/dp/0755390911Foodie Collectivehttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Plant-Power-Doctor-prescription-healthier/dp/1529107741 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womenkindcollectivepodcast/message

Bowel & Pelvic Floor Health with Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Julie Cornish29 Jun 202401:10:02

As you all know we at Womenkind Collective are all about shedding light on taboo subjects and one of the biggest taboos is poo! So, we thought it was about time we started to break the stigma about something that we all do.

This week our guest is Julie Cornish, not only is she a colorectal surgeon, a senior lecturer but she is also the founder of the superb Every Woman festival.

Julie is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with a specialist interest in colorectal cancer and pelvic floor surgery. She has an active research interest in cancer and pelvic floor health.

As if this is not enough Julie is also a chief investigator for POLARiS, a study looking into treatment for bowel problems after cancer surgery, she is a trustee of Masic, a charity that supports women who have suffered injuries during childbirth.

Julie says that some aspects of women's pelvic health conditions today are a ‘taboo within a taboo’. Bowel incontinence is not a sexy subject and it so often goes unreported and takes on average 7 years for someone to actually go and see their GP.

You can watch the interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

The Book Collective: Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, this week we read Chapters, 17 & 18, women are beginning to raise their voices about gender inequality in healthcare, the medical gaslighting of black women and the AIDS pandemic. In chapter 18 Elinor tells her story, all the medical gaslighting that she endured until she finally received her diagnosis.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We chat about our week, there’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a quote.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, settle in for this hour(ish) podcast full of meaningful chat.

Infertility Treatment and the postcode lottery with Lou Thomalla-Davey06 Jun 202101:13:07
In this weeks podcast Jinty and Lou chat to Lou Thomalla-Davey about her personal journey through infertility. We discover the great imbalance of the NHS postcode lottery when you are a stepparent. The Book Collective is well underway with Three Women. Jinty is so frustrated with what guest Lou tells us she has researched with some shocking results. We start our new foodie month with the topic of Brain Food to help keep our brains healthy and Brain fog at bay. When Lou Thomalla-Davey, stepparent to 3 children, put a video on her social media page she didn’t expect the out pouring of emotion and support from people not realising the injustice of the NHS fertility program in the UK. Our guest talks openly about the lack of funding on the NHS for fertility treatment, the injustice of the NHS postcode lottery for both men and women is quite shocking, it is so definite that just living on the wrong street in a town can change your opportunity to be considered for fertility treatment, it’s not just whether you have step children, but there is so much other criteria that women have to meet to be able to be considered for IVF, weight and age! Lou T-D started a petition to sign to help raise awareness and force the conversation in Parliament, details of how to sign in the show notes. Jinty feels frustrated with what guest Lou has gone through and does her own research which unravels a whole plethora of short sightedness within CCG’s for IVF. 1:6 couples in the UK are living with fertility issues and are struggling to get help with their fertility. The Book Collective continues with Three Women by Lisa Taddeo and we get to know the characters, the injustice with Maggie and her teacher, the gang rape of Lina and why we can’t wait for Sloane’s back-story to unravel. The Foodie Collective this month is Brain Food, how the importance of a good diet can help brain function not only in the present but may help us prevent Alzheimer’s or Dementia. This month the Collective delve into The 30-day Alzheimer’s Solution cookbook for recipes and start with a butternut squash and chickpea curry (where they go off pisté yet again) Lou confesses her WI fail this week…much to Jinty’s disappointment and shaking of heads but promises to try harder next week…And we are given a new Weekly Invitation from a lovely Womenkind Collective listener, what will it be??? We have also entered a competition to win recording equipment and would love you to vote for us by clicking on this link…..https://anchor.fm/jinty-sheerin/episodes/Womenkind-Collective-e10gcts/a-a5gik19 #Scream4IVF for greater funding of free IVF treatment & equality across the UK & all CCGsSign herehttps://www.change.org/p/scream4ivf-to-support-greater-funding-of-free-ivf-treatment-and-equality-across-the-uk-and-all-ccgsFind LouT-D at https://instagram.com/travel.ltd?utm_medium=copy_linkOr go to Change.org and look for Stop denying women fertility treatment because their partner already has a childBrain food recipe and book detailshttps://www.amazon.co.uk/30-Day-Alzheimers-Solution-Definitive-Preventing/dp/0062996959. Menopause symptoms and interesting words!30 May 202101:10:29
In this weeks podcast Jinty and Lou explore some of the symptoms that we don’t necessarily associate with the menopause. Jinty has researched the word ‘berk’ with some curious results, which led her down a rabbit hole (pardon the pun) of Greek and Roman words & attitudes for lady parts. The Book Collective get into the first week of Three Women by Lisa Taddeo and the Foodie Collective, Lou gets stuck in before she should because it’s a delicious humus recipe that goes well with the Wine Collective. Not everyone will develop symptoms of menopause and no two people will have the same menopause, but there are some lesser-known symptoms everyone should be aware of to understand what is happening to their body. The hot flushes and lack of libido are only the tip of the iceberg.Jinty and Lou talk honestly about the symptoms of the menopause. Many women are misdiagnosed and treated by their GP’s for other illnesses when actually their symptoms are caused by their reduced sex hormones. Jinty finds out where the word ‘berk’ comes from, shall we just say that it’s Cockney rhyming for Berkshire Hunt…. this then leads on to where the word vagina comes from and it opens up a whole can of worms! The Book Collective begin the first few chapters of Three Women by Lisa Taddeo there are tears from the Collective as the stories of the 3 women unravel. The Wine Collective get stuck into this months wine, Primivito a vegan organic wine from Tesco’s and Jinty sips a Seedlip 108, both are delicious and go very well with this weeks Foodie Collective. The Food Collective are still on their no cook month with a gorgeous easy hummus recipe that goes a little too well with the Primivito! Our 3 tips for life come from a beautiful woman from the Collective who has some thoughtful tips that we can live by. And Lou reports back on her WI from Emma Ellice-Flint. If you’ve enjoyed this podcast we would love it if you could buy us a Ko-Fi, you can also find extra content, photos, and updates. It helps us create quality content and sound. We really appreciate it. https://ko-fi.com/womenkindcollectivepodcastWe hope that you enjoy and please keep in touch, send us any book ideas, tips, advice, WI’s, Wine ideas or any stories email us at womenkindcollective@gmail.com  We have also entered a competition to win recording equipment and would love you to vote for us by going to this link…..https://www.myrodecast.com/No bake Foodie Collective - HummusIngredients•400g can chickpeas, drained•80ml extra virgin olive oil•1-2 fat garlic cloves, peeled and crushed•1 lemon, juiced then ½ zested•3 tbsp tahini•mixed crudités and toasted pitta bread, to serve (optional)Method•STEP 1Thoroughly rinse the chickpeas in a colander under cold running water. Alcohol and the Menopause09 May 202101:05:01
Welcome to this weeks Womenkind Collective where Jinty and Lou talk all things women. On this weeks podcast we find out why we can’t drink as much alcohol as we used to, especially during menopause. There is a new foodie Collective, a recipe for ‘No bake flapjacks’. As it’s national pet month we hear from some of the Collective about how pets have helped, mentally and physically, during the pandemic and we catch up with the book Collective Untamed by Glennon Doyle. The main topic of this weeks podcast is Alcohol and the Menopause, Jinty and Lou find out that gender plays a big part in alcohol tolerances and why a woman’s alcohol intake might want to be less than a man’s, especially in menopause when oestrogen levels deplete, women have more fat and less water in their bodies causing blood alcohol levels to rise. The question is why is this information not readily available so women can make informed choices? The book Collective is on the penultimate read of Glennon Doyle’s Untamed, the book is resonating with so many of the Collective and has raised some interesting topics about parenting and being your true vulnerable self and why being more of a flight attendant as a parent will help through turbulent situations. We learn what pets have done for us mentally and physically during lockdown and not just the dogs! We have some global comments from the Collective and we meet Sammy the guinea pig!The foodie Collective is a ‘no bake’ month & both Jinty and Lou have made the no bake flapjacks from Emma Hollingsworth recipe and have a taste off, this is a simple recipe that is full of good gut ingredients and learn how some of the ingredients can be swapped for cheaper options. The WI’s from both Jinty and Lou have some positive results from Jinty’s gratitude’s (grateful not to be crocheting) from Lou’s invite to the shampoo bar that Jinty invited Lou to try. The 3 tips from life are from a lovely member of the Collective, Laura; she imparts her words of wisdom to the Collective about life. If you’ve enjoyed this podcast we would love it if you could buy us a Ko-Fi, you can also find extra content, photos, and updates. It helps us create quality content and sound. We really appreciate it. https://ko-fi.com/womenkindcollectivepodcastNo bake Flapjacks; IngredientsFor the flapjacks* 2 cups oats* 1/3 cup raisins* 4 tbsp maple syrup* 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted* 1/3 cup cashew butter (or any other nut or seed butter)For the chocolate fudge* 1/2 cup cacao powder* 1/2 cup maple syrup* 1/4 cup cashew butter (or any other nut or seed butter)* 1/2 cup coconut oil, meltedTo make the flapjacks, just combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir well. Spoon into a lined baking tin or mould and press down evenly to make sure the mixture is all compact, otherwise it won’t stick together nicely. Pop it in the fridge while you make the fudge. For the fudge, again just add the ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir until you have a thick chocolatey mixture (don’t worry if it seems quite liquid as this will set in the fridge). Pour it on top of the flapjacks and put them back in the fridge for an hour or so to allow them to set. Alternatively if you’re impatient like me you can always put them in the freezer and they will set quicker. Cut them into squares! In this weeks podcast Jinty and Lou welcome Nutritionist, author, chef, and all round fantastic woman, Emma Ellice-Flint to the Womenkind Collective. Emma is a clinical nutritional therapist, specialising in Women’s health. Her book, The Happy Hormone Cook book, combines nutritional facts and information to help balance our hormones as well as great practical tips and recipes.Emma works with Dr Louise Newson at the Menopause and Wellbeing Centre, helping women with the menopause transition, energy levels, weight issues, mood and mental health, sleep problems, IBS and histamine intolerance. Our Foodie Collective theme this month has been Gut health and this is a subject Emma is passionate about, running regular fermentation workshops (online) which Jinty has attended and says ‘they are fun, informative & demonstrate how easy it is to begin your fermented foods journey, which not only will your gut thank you for, but your body and mind too!’You will learn a lot in this episode, (get a pen & paper) Emma answers your questions such asMy body has changed shape, all around my middle is expanding yet I’ve changed nothing, is there an explanation for this & what can I do?Why do I crave beige sugary foods ?Do women become more intolerant to certain foods during menopause?I’m suffering terribly with indigestion, I have constant trapped wind - the menopause seems to have changed me completely, what do I do?Is looking after my gut going to be expensive and a big faff? How will pro and pre biopics benefit me in menopause?Emma talks us through how food effects our mood, sleep and physical well-being. Why our hormones in peri and menopause make our gut and food choices change. We learn that we have oestrogen receptors throughout our body, including our gut.We discuss intermittent fasting and breaking our bad food habits and creating new ones, and how this will benefit our gut, and consequently will improve our wellbeing.Emma tells us how we might begin to go about changing our diets and lifestyles, some of which will surprise you!The book Collective this week starts with part 1 and 2 of Glennon Doyle’s Untamed and this book is already resonating with Jinty & Lou.Jinty talks about how we hide our real self and expectation. As women we can lose ourselves and be who we think we should be rather than who we really are. It's Not Hysteria with Dr Karen Tang22 Jun 202401:18:19

Throughout this series we have been on a journey through the history of women’s health from wandering wombs, witch craft and our uterus’s being held responsible by the patriarchy for all of life’s miseries.

In this weeks fun and educational Episode we meet the fabulous Dr Karen Tang. Her incredible book It's not Hysteria,The Truth About Pelvic Pain, Period Problems, and Your Gynaecological Health, is out now in the UK.

Absolutely no subject regarding reproductive health is off limits, we learned so much from this interview, we talk ,Roe Vs Wade and how it’s affecting maternal mortality in the US, gender diversity, systemic racial biases and the differences in US and UK gynaecological services and so much more.

Dr Karen Tang is a gynaecologist and minimally invasive gynaecological surgeon who is an internationally recognised leader in reproductive health.

The Book Collective: Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, this week we read Chapters, 15 & 16, we learn about the diabolical treatment of women suffering from lupus, why lobotomies were a definite course of treatment for women who suffered pain and also why it was so much easier to use tranquillisers on a woman to quieten her.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We chat about our week, and find out our Bridgerton names. There’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a quote.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual shenanigans! So, settle in for this hour(ish) podcast full of meaningful chat.

You can also watch the interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

Autism in Women & Girls with Lyn & Libby Curtis11 Apr 202101:21:45
You’ll need a whole flask of tea for this weeks podcast as well as tissues, so settle in for a slightly longer episode with some beautiful stories from some amazing women. It’s autism awareness month and we have 2 very special guests mother and daughter, Lyn and Libby Curtis. Lou gets to the bottom of one of the collectives pube loss and chin hair gain. It’s the last 6 chapters of Caitlin Moran’s More Than A Woman and we discuss how truthful the book is for every woman including those of us at a certain age not packing the suspenders for a sexy weekend away but packing the M & S menopause pants! For our foodie collective Jinty talks probiotics and why we need them for good gut health and how to get probiotics into your body. During our interview with Lyn and Libby we learn that only 1:3 girls are diagnosed to boys, and diagnosis for girls can take much, much longer. Lyn was diagnosed when she was 40 years old and 3 of Lyn’s 5 children have autism, Libby is her youngest daughter and was diagnosed at 6 years old, but this was off the back of her brothers diagnosis. Lyn talks openly and honestly about parenting her children with autism, the struggles and reality, as well as trying to regulate her own symptoms, this fiercely loving family is full of love but can be perceived as cold by those who do not understand the gifts they have. There was a huge difference between her daughter and her son’s diagnosis - the internalization of Libby’s emotions and how it can manifest in girls as self-harm and eating disorders in an obsessive way. Lyn is also suffering from long COVID and she discusses how this as well as the menopause has massively impacted on her life. This episode is an emotional rollercoaster finishing with a beautiful letter from Jinty’s daughter who is waiting for a formal autism assessment. With much love and gratitude to the women of this week’s podcast for opening their hearts to us. We make this podcast ourselves so please share, subscribe, follow and review, it means a lot to us. Leave us a message or email us, we would love to hear your stories, suggestions and thoughts womenkindcollective@gmail.com. Disclaimer- These are stories told by real women with autism but everyone is different and there are many different traits or gifts in the spectrum. For advice on Autism https://www.autism.org.uk/. Learning to Live Again with Molly Fenton08 Jun 202401:09:14

Very occasionally in life, if you are lucky, you meet people that are so wise that you have to stop in your tracks and listen to them speak, and after listening you come away with your eyes more open and the world looks a little brighter than it did before. Today’s guest is one of those people, Molly Fenton, she is only 22 yet she is changing lives, she is the award winning founder of the campaign Love your Period, a UN Women UK Delegate and a Young Ambassador for the Brain Tumour Charity.

Molly founded Love your period whilst still at school, frustrated by the stigma and lack of education around menstruation, she wanted to act as the big sister that other young people might not have, stimulating conversations around periods and sexual health. Incredibly she has built a volunteer base to 75 people, alongside her own younger sister,Tilly.

At 16 Molly was told she had an inoperable brain tumour. Although benign, she describes how her life became ‘watch and wait’. Failing GCSE’s, and having to attend her schools behavioural unit and then being told to leave post sixteen, yet she continued helping the community, fighting for girls rights within the health care system.

Six years on and Molly lives with many debilitating chronic health conditions, yet she is a keynote speaker, giving talks around the country about her philosophy on life since her brain tumour diagnosis, speaking in Parliament about period stigma and poverty, she is passionate about helping others and is also an ambassador for them Every Woman Festival coming up soon. You can watch the full unedited interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

The Book Collective: We continue reading, Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, this week we read Chapters, 11 & 12, and find out why menopausal women have guinea pigs to thank for early treatment, again we meet some ground breaking women.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

Bloody Negligence, The Movementwith Kate Duffy & Gayle Stevens-White01 Jun 202401:16:37

We have two fierce and fun guests on the podcast today, Kate Duffy and Gayle Stevens-White, they are grassroot campaigners who have collaborated and founded, Bloody Negligence, a movement that is exposing neglect in women’s healthcare from menstruation to menopause and everything in-between, they want to empower women to have their say and ‘get shit done’!

We have met these incredible women many times before on the campaign trail and it is always an absolute treat to chat to them, we leave no stone unturned, we talk menopause and get absolutely furious at the bias in women’s health care.

Get the kettle on and get ready for this lively chat.

In the Book Collective we continue reading, Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, this week we read Chapters, 9 & 10, we meet the extraordinary suffragettes and learn about the hideous suffering they went through and the extraordinary women that fought for women’s freedom. We also find out about ‘silent births’ and why the patriarchy didn’t think this was such a good idea.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We learn some new acronyms that might get you in a wordy spin and Jinty finds out how many swimming pools are closing in England and how it’s affecting women, she also talks avocados…. You may never look at one in the same way again!

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, settle in for this hour(ish) podcast full of meaningful chat.

Autism, Girl Unmasked with Emily Katy25 May 202401:17:31
Our guest this week is the wonderful Author and Autism advocate Emily Katy.

Emily’s book, Girl Unmasked: How Uncovering My Autism Saved My Life, is a powerful memoir where she shares her personal experiences with autism and mental health.

In this chat Emily highlights the challenges she faced in childhood and adulthood, emphasising the importance of understanding and acceptance.

We discuss the need for more resources and support for individuals with autism and mental health conditions. We also discuss the challenges of fitting in and masking autistic traits, and the misunderstanding of empathy in autistic individuals.

We learn the importance of recognising and understanding autistic traits in children, and how much better it would be if we could recognise Autism in people before they reach crisis point.

We chat about how autistic people have unique needs and experiences that should be acknowledged and respected.

In her book Emily has a list of Autism Myths, and Emily debunks a few of these for us, such as Autism is a condition that mainly affects boys.

We loved this conversation with the incredible Emily Katy (and loved the book too), an essential listen for everyone.

Circadian Rhythm & Sleep with Sleep & body clock scientist Dr Kat Lederle 11 May 202401:09:20

Now, most people have heard of the body’s Circadian Rhythm but do you know what it means and how it affects our wellbeing and sleep? Well, someone who does is our guest today Dr Kat Lederle, who is a sleep and body clock scientist, a sleep coach and also the author of Sleep Sense.

Dr Kat is passionate about helping individuals sleep well and feel good. She sees sleep as an act of self-care, and her focus is on providing one-to-one therapeutic sleep coaching to women who experience insomnia and sleep problems. Her work combines sleep science with and learnings from Mindfulness, Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy. We chat about why women sleep differently to men.

You can watch the full unedited interview on our Womenkind Collective YouTube channel.

The Book Collective this week seems to be getting all of us furious as we continue reading Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, we realise it’s no wonder women’s health is as dire as it is today with male medics taking charge of birthing and a really heinous man called Dr Isaac Baker Brown who insisted clitoridectomy was a way to cure women of pleasuring themselves.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We catch up on your comments Jinty asks a deep question from Gina Martin’s new book and Lou finds out about casting clouts! It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, settle in for this hour(ish) podcast full of meaningful chat.

Surviving and thriving an Empty Nest23 Nov 202400:42:38

This series, we are spilling the tea on topics that affect our health and well-being from the extra-ordinary women that are raising their voices for positive change.

Today we are thrilled to be spilling the tea with our guest and Womenkind Collective co-founder Lou Hockings-Thompson.

When a child moves out of home, parents often experience a mix of emotions, ranging from pride and fulfilment to feelings of grief, sadness, and anxiety. These emotions can feel even more intense if other life changes, are happening simultaneously such as menopause. Lou and her husband, Steve, are Empty Nesters and have been for a little while now and she offers us some wise words for those who may be navigating life as an empty nester.

In the Book Collective we discuss chapters 19-25 of our book for this series, All Fours by Miranda July. The narrators relationship is spiralling, her emotions are running high and we find out who the tele-photographer is! We will read to the end of the book for our Book club week.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book or ideas for a new book for Season 12.

It’s another episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! There’s comments, a WI (weekly invitation) and a thought for the week.

So, go and get the kettle on and settle in for our weekly collective chat while we spill the tea!

Intimacy & Menopause with Sam Evans co-founder of Jo Divine04 May 202401:23:09

This week we welcome back a friend of ours who was one of our very first guests back in 2021, sexual health and pleasure expert Sam Evans, who is the co-founder of Jo Divine, an online sex toy company which she set up with husband Paul in 2007.

We have been looking forward to chatting to Sam again and as usual Sam was full of practical and useful information about all things sex, intimacy, and pleasure.

Sam has a background in nursing, and has written hundreds of practical articles about sexual health and pleasure for Jo Divine and for leading websites, she has also featured in Radio fours women's Hour and the Channel 4 Documentary 'Sex, myths and menopause'

A fellow Menopause activist and campaigner, Sam works hard to ensure anyone going through the perimenopause, menopause and beyond can continue to enjoy good sexual intimacy and pleasure if they wish to. She says 'No one has to give up on enjoying pleasurable sex when there is practical advice, skin safe products and irritant free sexual lubricants and moisturisers that can transform your intimate health and sexual pleasure'

Sam has given our listeners a 10% discount code at Jo Divine: www.jodivine.com valid from 5.5.2024 - 9.6.2024

using the code: WKC2024

The book Sam talks about is Mind the Gap by Dr Karen Gurney.

In the Book Collective we continue reading Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, we met two incredible women, in chapters 3 and 4, one who quite literally defied death twice.

You can join in with our Book Club, send us a DM or voice note with your thoughts on the book.

We catch up on your comments and Lou asks why clothes models look so glum, and also do you have a noisy eating partner? Jinty ponders the question of why we name inanimate objects. It's another episode brimming with chat and all the usual shenanigans! So, settle in for this hourish) podcast full of meaningful chat.
