Creating Opportunity for Everyone

Episode 517

mercredi 22 mai 2024Duration 39:18

Did you know women represent only 33% of employees in the Tech industry?

And according to Accenture half of women who go into the tech industry drop out by the age of 35.

Knowing those stats, it’s great when you hear of a company that is beating those odds. I wanted to know what is making the difference, so I’ve invited Laura Baldwin, the President of O’Reilly Media to share what they are doing at O’Reilly with all of us.

Meet Laura Baldwin

Laura Baldwin began working with O’Reilly Media in October 2001 as Chief Financial Officer and added Chief Operating Officer to her responsibilities before becoming O’Reilly’s first President in March 2011. Prior to O’Reilly, she consulted for the publishing industry with BMR Associates, managing diverse large projects. Her media career started at Chronicle Books, where she was CFO for ten years, contributing to its successful distribution and gift business launch. Laura’s diverse experience in banking, corporate governance, and media fuels her passion for the industry. She credits her leadership ethos to her all-girls high school, where she was taught that leadership is available to anyone who demonstrates initiative and drive regardless of their gender. At O’Reilly, she helped to create a diversity scholarship program and continues to advocate for an inclusive and open workforce.

In this episode Laura and I discuss:

·         O'Reilly's executive team stat (45% women) and companywide stat of 43% women

·         When O’Reilly realized there was a discrepancy in their company, and something needed to change.

·         What they are doing differently, which has allowed them to sustainably achieve these numbers.

·         O’Reilly’s current focus to help their people continue to have flexibility and manageable workloads.

Analiza Quiroz Wolf on Beliefs That Block You

Episode 508

mercredi 28 février 2024Duration 41:52

There are a lot of myths out there about what you need to do to be successful at work.

You may already be at a point in your career where you’ve realized this and had to shift gears.

And you may still feel like you are walking a tight rope of, for instance, needing to be more decisive but not too decisive because that can work against you as a woman. Or, advocating for yourself more but not too much because that also has consequences.

On this episode of Women Taking the Lead I’m joined by Analiza Quiroz Wolf to talk about the strategies and practices that will actually lead you to success in the workplace.

In this episode Analiza and I discussed:

·         How her own story influenced the need to debunk the myths of success and the research and experiences that went into it.

·         How our strategies for success often come from those who want the best for us but those strategies don’t always translate into success at work.

·         The notion that you will be seen, acknowledged and rewarded by focusing on your responsibilities and working hard.

·         How growing your influence is about developing relationships with others and again doesn’t involve a lot of hard work.

·         Letting go of leadership stereotypes so your own strengths as a leader can emerge.

100% Jodi: Are You Afraid of Success or Are You Afraid of More Responsibility?

lundi 15 février 2021Duration 11:23

Are you afraid of success or are you afraid of more responsibility?

In this episode we’re going to explore why success can be so elusive and why self-sabotage rears its ugly head in moments when success is within reach.

I don’t remember when I first heard the expression “Fear of Success”, but I do remember being baffled hearing it.

Why would anyone fear success?

At that time, to me, success meant a great job with a fancy title, more money than I needed, being fit, being in a great relationship, etc.

That’s a pretty fantastic list. Most people want these things or some variation of them.

Where is the fear coming from?

As I started getting closer to actually having some of those things a light bulb went off.

That list of great things I wanted, they in and of themselves weren’t the problem. It was the thought of all the things that come with them that had me start pumping the break.

In a nutshell, it’s the added responsibility that causes us to cringe and hold back.

When you think about the life you want to be living, what new responsibilities will you need to take on if you were to achieve that life? Is there anything that causes you to hesitate?

If you are torn between the life and lifestyle you want to be living and an aversion to taking on even more responsibility, I invite you to do a Responsibility Remodel Session with me.

This is a life-changing opportunity to restructure your commitments and obligations, and get you closer to where you want to be.

In this 30-minute strategy session you will:

  • get to the heart of the work you want to be doing, or only you can do, and identify the work someone else could be doing.
  • know how to empower your team, clients, colleagues, etc., so you can work less (or refocus your energy) and still deliver.
  • have language to communicate new expectations and gain buy-in so everyone is onboard.
  • have the strategies to keep your to do list clear of non-essential time-wasters, allowing you to give your priority items your all.

This is a special session offered to help you get past those mental and physical hurdles so you can make progress on the things that are the most vital to you, and open up opportunity for you to say yes to the things that will allow for the life you want to be living.

You don’t have to work more or work harder to have that life. By restructuring what it is you do and do not do, you will actually be able to take on more responsibility and have the time and energy to enjoy the life you are living.

For that reason, this session is being offered for $97. That’s 30 minutes with me focused on the things that are most important to you. I would love and be honored to support you to set up your work and your life in a way that feels good to you. A way that honors your core values, allows you to express your gifts and talents, and allows you to enjoy life as well.

Go to https://womentakingthelead.com/remodel to find out more and sign up for your session. I cannot wait to chat with you.

You deserve to have a life that works for you.

As always, I hope this was of value to you, and here’s to your success!

100% Jodi: The Inconvenience of Happiness

lundi 18 janvier 2021Duration 15:36

Do you prefer convenience or happiness?

You may be thinking, “Both!” But the reality is our long-term happiness and satisfaction usually requires a long series of inconveniences. In this episode I’m making a case for why you actually want to be inconvenienced a lot more.

Hello, I’m Jodi Flynn and welcome to the Women Taking the Lead podcast. I’m an executive leadership coach, author, speaker, workshop facilitator and I have the joy to work with women leaders who want to hone the skills that will allow them to thrive in Senior Leadership. I know I’ve met a woman I would love to work with when we start having a few laughs about our tendencies toward perfectionism and people pleasing.

I had been living in Maine for the past 18 years, but I am currently in Massachusetts staying with family while I prepare to make my final move to Virginia. Thanks to the beauty of technology, I’ve been able to continue to work with women all over the world even in the midst of so much movement and transition.

I do individual coaching as well as workshops and team retreats, and I am the current President of the board for The Maine Women's Conference.

I spend the free time I have catching up with friends and family, coordinating my move to Virginia, and finding calm by watching the Great British Baking Show.

Applied knowledge is power

If you spend any time with teenagers and young adults you’ve probably witnessed many occasions where they choose the short-term pleasure or convenience over the long-term gain.

Currently living in a home with a 9-year-old, 13-year-old, and 19-year-old, I am treated to many conversations and behaviors around this very topic. I’ve also had a very direct conversation with my 21-year-old nephew about this.

We’re always faced with things, great and small, that we’d rather not have to do. But if we want to reach our goals and find satisfaction and fulfillment – the things that truly make us happy – we have to make some sacrifices.

You might be thinking, “Jodi, why are you taking a podcast episode to talk about this? I already know this.”

I absolutely know that you know this. What I would ask you is, how closely are you living this?

When working with my clients we make the distinction between what we know and what we believe.

Sometimes we hear an idea or theory and think, “That sounds about right. That makes sense to me.”

And if there is some science to back it up, we then consider ourselves to “know it.”

There’s the saying, knowledge is power, but that’s not exactly true.

Knowledge is potential power. Applied knowledge is power.

If you are making the sacrifices necessary to achieve satisfaction and fulfillment in your life, great!

If not, use this episode as a gentle reminder. Though we may “know” something it’s often helpful to have reminders to live what we know.

In this episode are some examples of the short-term sacrifices or inconveniences I invite you to make so you can live a life that brings you satisfaction and fulfillment.

I'm also sharing suggestion for how to make it easier to make those sacrifices.

I hope this is of value to you and here’s to your success!
