Jackie Schuld: Art therapy for late-diagnosed ADHD & autism05 Aug 202400:56:29

Episode 189 with Jackie Schuld.

“We need more time for things to work through our brains. Art helps with that and gives an outlet for all the intense emotions and thoughts we have.”

Jackie is an expressive arts therapist who runs a private practice specializing in late-identified Autism & ADHD. As a late-identified autistic and ADHDer herself, she loves to connect with her clients through writing, art, and conversation. She also writes and illustrates visual books, including “What is Autism,” “Grief is a Mess” and many more.

Jackie and I talk about the road to identifying as an autistic and ADHD adult, and some of the limitations to the diagnosis process. We also discuss the difficulties that many neurodivergent adults, especially women, have had with therapy in the past and some of the unique needs that neurodivergent clients bring to a therapeutic relationship.

We also talk about how and why art therapy — including writing, drawing, music, and more — can be such a valuable tool for expression and self-exploration, especially for neurodivergent clients.

Jes Hagan: ADHD, PMDD & hormonal mood symptoms01 Jul 202401:00:16

Episode 188 with Jes Hagan.

“The first study on women and ADHD was done in 1979, but there wasn’t a study on the menstrual cycle and ADHD until 2017.”

Jes is a nutritional therapist and board-certified integrative menstrual health educator and coach. She is the founder of Her Mood Mentor, a virtual premenstrual clinic. Her own experience of living with misdiagnosed and undiagnosed Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and ADHD has fueled her determination to help others reclaim their lives from hormonal mood symptoms.

PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that can come with significant emotional and physical symptoms that typically occur during the luteal phase. Anywhere from 3-8% of menstruating adults have PMDD, while roughly 46% of women with ADHD also experience PMDD.

Jes and I talk about her personal diagnosis journey, starting with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at the age of 17. She shares about her later diagnoses of PMDD and ADHD, and how medical research has been slowly connecting the dots when it comes to how our hormones and menstrual cycles affect our ADHD.

We also get all fired up over the lack of education on a lot of these topics that relate to women with ADHD, as well as the challenges we face navigating the medical system with ADHD.

Finally, Jes discusses some of the amazing holistic treatment options available for anyone who struggles with hormonal mood symptoms.

TRIGGER WARNING: Throughout the episode, Jes mentions her experiences with suicidal thoughts during PMDD, so if that subject is a difficult one for you, you might want to sit this episode out.

Dr. Kathleen Nadeau: Adulting and aging with ADHD18 Mar 202401:04:01

Episode 179 with Dr. Kathleen Nadeau.

“One of the best ways to help women with ADHD is in groups. We heal each other by understanding each other, laughing together, and not expecting the same perfection we feel the outside world expects of us.”

Dr. Nadeau is a clinical psychologist and founder of The Chesapeake Center, as well as an internationally recognized authority on ADHD.

She is the author or co-author of over a dozen books related to ADHD across the lifespan, from her best-selling book for children, “Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention”, to her latest book “Still Distracted After All These Years,” which addresses the many factors of growing older with ADHD (because as we all know, you do not outgrow ADHD).

We discuss some of the strategies laid out in Dr. Nadeau’s latest book, such as the importance of maintaining structure, connection, and support as we age. We also address some of the myths and misconceptions about stimulant medications for the over-60 population, and the need for better understanding and treatment of ADHD in older adults, as many healthcare professionals dismiss or minimize the struggles faced by this population.

And we talk about “failure to launch” in younger adults and how difficulties with early adulting skills might lead to a lot of anxiety around aging with ADHD.

Finally, we discuss her upcoming book, “A Clinician's Guide to Women with ADHD: Diagnosis and Treatment” which she is co-writing with Dr. Patricia Quinn, MD, and Dr. Michael Morse, MD. Although there are many books for and about women with ADHD, there is a great need for a clinician's guide to diagnosis and treatment. Women continue to have great difficulty finding knowledgeable physicians and therapists to treat them. This long-overdue book due to be published in 2025 will provide a very straightforward treatment guide for medical and mental health providers.

Layla Touchet: Teaching schools to spot signs of ADHD in girls13 Jun 202200:56:06

Episode 89 with Layla Touchet.

“I was actually a hyperactive child, but the school told my mom that I’m just gifted and bored. I mean, y’all were right. But y’all were wrong, too. It was more than that.”

Layla is a 29 year old neurodivergent female who works as a school counselor in Louisiana, working with tiny humans in grades pre-k through 2nd grade, most of whom are neurodivergent as well.

She’s also a licensed mental health counselor with certifications in Autism and ADHD and she’s working on her PhD in Counseling.

Layla was first diagnosed with ADHD about a year-and-a-half ago. After she started medication for her ADHD, she realized there were still some things not adding up, and that’s when she received her Autism diagnosis.

We talk about her dual diagnosis and what it’s been like to look back over the course of her life, especially childhood, and see the traits of ADHD and Autism throughout.

We also talk about how her discovery of her own neurodivergence has helped shape her as a mental health counselor and how she’s now educating the teachers and staff at her school and in her entire district on how to recognize some of the more overlooked neurodivergent traits in children, especially in girls.

And we talk about her love of karate and kickboxing, as well as our shared love of office supplies.

Amy Marie Hann: Mom guilt, the church & mastering the mundane30 May 202200:51:20

Episode 87 with Amy Marie Hann.

“We try so hard to do all these things, and we end up feeling like failures. In reality, we’re just supposed to be doing life in a different way.”

Amy Marie is an ADHD advocate, entrepreneur and mom of 3 young kids. She was diagnosed with ADD in kindergarten but found motherhood and especially being a stay-at-home mom to be the most challenging season for her brain.

Amy Marie now teaches moms with ADHD to manage their home life with ease in order to have more time and energy. In addition to her Activated ADHD Mamas Facebook group, Amy also runs a Master the Mundane course and training system for moms so they can better understand their brain wiring and develop the best home management systems for themselves and their families.

She also wrote a 16-page e-book called Thrive in Motherhood with ADHD, which comes with practical tips, mindset shifts and resources for personal growth. You can get that for free at her website.

Amy Marie and I talk all about domestic life and the unique pressures on women to be able to “do it all” as a mom and entrepreneur — and to somehow also be satisfied and sane.

And we also talk about the Christian community and the church and some of the expectations on Christian moms that simply don’t work when you have neurodivergent kids.

Tennille is a full-time working mom of 3 who was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago in her early 40s.

After a brief stint as a TV reporter in the late 90s, she fell into the perfect career for her: sales for early-stage companies (which she discovered is an ideal environment for her ADHD brain).

Tennille and I talk all about what it’s like to have ADHD and be married to a Type A, neurotypical spouse.

We also talk about careers that feel well-suited to ADHDers, and she recounts her traumatic experience with a doctor when she was first seeking a diagnosis.

Catherine Avery: Productivity, biorhythms & how to avoid burnout02 May 202200:57:15

Episode 83 with Catherine Avery.

“With neurodivergent folks, we need to recognize that if it’s already working, don’t try to fix it.”

Catherine is an ADHD & productivity coach and the CEO of Productivity by Design. She believes that in order to be truly productive, you need to learn how to be intentionally unproductive.

Catherine coaches her clients through proven strategies that help them master their time, space, and information so they can be more productive, more profitable, and have more time to spend doing the things they love.

Catherine is a former “queen of clutter,” a recovering Type-A Wall Streeter, and a cancer survivor/thriver who was officially diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s.

We talk about her own deep dive into her “chemo brain” and brain fog, and how that ultimately led to her ADHD diagnosis. We also talk about the grief that occurs to many of us diagnosed later in life when looking back over our lives with this new lens.

And we talk about burnout, how to lean into our natural biological rhythms of productivity, and knowing when to hit pause.

And finally, we compare our crazy TMJ stories — and I rehash my own story about teeth grinding and vertigo! If you grind your teeth at night, you definitely want to stick around and hear more about our experiences.

KC Davis: Self-care & keeping house with ADHD25 Apr 202201:10:31

Episode 82 with KC Davis.

“We work so much harder just to do the simple things everybody else can do automatically.”

KC Davis is a licensed professional therapist, author, speaker, and the incredible maven behind the mental health platform Struggle Care. She is also the casual genius behind the TikTok account @domesticblisters, where her accessible advice on self-care, self-compassion, cleaning and organizational systems that actually work, has amassed nearly 1.5 million followers.

KC’s compassionate and practical approach to self and home care for those dealing with mental health, physical illness, and hard seasons of life has also been summarized in her book, “How to Keep House While Drowning.” The revamped, expanded version comes out tomorrow April 26, as does the audiobook read by the author.

KC Davis began her therapy journey at 16 when she entered treatment for drug addiction and mental health issues. After getting sober she became a speaker and advocate for mental health and recovery. Professionally, KC has worked most of her career in the field of addiction in roles such a therapist, consultant, and executive director. She lives in Houston with her husband and two daughters.

KC and I talk all about how her TikTok audience convinced her to get an ADHD diagnosis and how the app is helping to change the face of what it looks like to be neurodivergent.

We also talk about the shame and guilt so many of us feel around domesticity, and the reasons why neurodivergent brains can struggle to stay on top of cleaning and organizing. And we also talk about the cleaning strategies she created for her family that went viral and have changed the lives of so many women, myself included.

Rebecca Perkins: ADHD & demand avoidance18 Apr 202200:58:31

Episode 81 with Rebecca Perkins.

"I can take demands all the time, but if someone asks in just slightly the wrong way, my brain is like, 'Nope, I won’t do it.'"

Rebecca is a neurodiverse speaker, writer, and educator based outside of Melbourne, Australia. She is the CEO and founder of My Spirited Child, an advocacy hub that provides strategies and support to parents, carers and educators of neurodivergent children, and to neurodivergent adults themselves. She also co-founded the National PEKE Centre, a resource center for neurodivergent families with individualized treatment plans, therapies and services located in Cranbourne, Australia. The center is an absolute dream for anyone who finds the diagnosis and treatment process to be overwhelming and confusing (which is basically all of us, right?).

Rebecca and I talk all about our own difficulties in school as undiagnosed children, how the education system fails neurodiverse children, which is ultimately what led her to start advocating for her own neurodiverse kids. We also discuss why so many of us think we’re failures even though we’re often achieving at Energizer-bunny levels.

We also talk about demand avoidance in relation to Autism and ADHD, and why it’s chronically misunderstood and misdiagnosed in so many neurodivergent children.

And Rebecca gives one of my favorite answers yet for renaming ADHD, so stick with us to hear that later in this episode!

Rebecca is doing amazing work in Australia — she was recently a speaker at the Victorian ADHD Conference, which was a massive success. She’ll be appearing next at the Queensland ADHD Conference coming up on May 14th at the Unidus Conference Centre.

Dr. Loucresie Rupert: Why ADHD gets overlooked in children of color11 Apr 202200:48:10

Episode 80 with Dr. Loucresie Rupert.

"Psychiatry doesn’t offer a lot of training in treating ADHD in adults and that’s a real deficit. Neurodevelopment disorders don’t just go away when we turn 18."

Dr. Rupert is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist who specializes in neurodiversity, children with trauma, children in foster care or who have been adopted, and adults with developmental disabilities.

She’s also an activist and co-founder of Physician Women SOAR (Support, Organize, Advocate, Reclaim), an organization of physician women that raises money and awareness while educating on intersectional causes such as racial equality, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious, areligious, disability and neurodiverse equality. She also serves her community through her participation in B.L.A.C.K. (Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge).

Dr. Rupert aims to help empower those with mental health diagnoses and neurodiversity through her company Insightful Consultant, LLC, via speaking engagements, education and training on a plethora of mental health and diversity-related topics. Anette Jacobsen: Assessments, stigma & workplace accessibility11 Mar 202401:00:04

Episode 178 with Anette Jacobsen.

“A lot of women don’t pass the autism tests the first time because the questions are designed with young boys in mind. ‘Do you collect trains, planes, or information about birds?’ No, I don't. But right now my special interest is autism and ADHD, and you should see how many Trello boards I have.”

Anette lives in Copenhagen, Denmark. Anette never suspected she had ADHD until she lost her flexible job as the administrative manager of the largest language school for adult immigrants in Denmark due to extenuating circumstances. She went from having her own office to having to work in open-plan offices, and she found that she really struggled with focusing. After reading an article about ADHD, she started to connect the dots in her own life and was officially diagnosed at age 51.

Anette is currently looking for the right career path for her, and we discuss some of the challenges she has faced while trying to advocate for herself both in the workplace and during the interview process.

Anette is also one of my former group coaching clients, so we catch up on how she’s been doing. We also talk about the chronic self-doubt that comes along with ADHD, especially after a lifetime spent undiagnosed, and how important it is for us to feel trusted and accepted, especially in the workplace. And we talk about some of the difficulties she encountered when seeking an autism diagnosis, as well as the drawbacks of autism assessments for adult women.

Alisha Mays: ADHD, poverty & food insecurity28 Mar 202201:02:52

Episode 78 with Alisha Mays.

"When I talk, my mind can be in 80 different places. Sometimes my brain just stops paying attention to what my mouth is saying."

Alisha Mays is a PhD student in cultural anthropology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Alisha dropped out of high school, and went from getting her GED to getting her PhD. She is a first-generation college student, and she has devoted herself to studying systems of poverty and inequality in Kentucky, particularly as it relates to food.

Alisha was diagnosed at 31 and credits her ADHD with giving her an innate ability to connect with people. She’s passionate about sharing stories for social change and empowering people to claim their narratives.

TRIGGER WARNING: This was a really great conversation. This is also one of the more raw interviews I’ve had on this podcast, as we talk about Alisha’s experiences growing up in extreme poverty. We discuss such topics as eating disorders and attempted suicide, so if those topics are difficult for you, you might want to sit this one out.

Chelsea Uithoven: Cycles of productivity & the on/off switch21 Mar 202201:02:04

Episode 77 with Chelsea Uithoven.

"We have this on/off switch. We can be so insanely competent when that switch is on. But when the switch is off, it’s like, ‘Uh uh, no.’"

Chelsea is the founder of Part Time Wellness, the digital wellness resource for women with ADHD. Her goal is to share a more lighthearted approach to wellness and help women with ADHD see wellness as a tool to help them live a more joyful, fulfilling life — not just another “have to” guilting them from their never-ending To Do list.

As a multi-passionate entrepreneur and play enthusiast, you can find Chelsea recording podcasts, creating digital courses, filming YouTubes, and playing her way through life, because it’s just too short to do all of our “have to’s” and none of the “want to’s.”

Chelsea and I talk all about becoming our own authority and avoiding neurotypical advice when it comes to cycles of productivity. We also talk about the ADHD tendency toward all-or-nothing thinking, especially when it comes to exercise, nutrition, and pretty much every other wellness habit.

Dr. Sharon Saline: How do we know if it’s ADHD?14 Mar 202200:46:05

Episode 76 with Dr. Sharon Saline.

"We all have different brains and we should honor neurodiversity in the same way we honor gender diversity or racial diversity or religious diversity."

Dr. Saline is a clinical psychologist and author of the award-winning book, What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life.

She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as understanding ADHD, executive functioning, anxiety, motivation, different kinds of learners, and the teen brain. She is a regular contributor to ADDitude Magazine and Psychology, and currently hosts a live ADHD Support Group + Q&A every Friday over on Facebook with ADDitude Magazine.

Dr. Saline and I talk about how her interest in ADHD as a psychologist was sparked by her own neurodivergent family. We also talk about inattentive type ADHD in childhood and why so many kids — both boys and girls — with inattentive ADHD end up overlooked and ultimately diagnosed with depression and anxiety instead of ADHD.

We also talk about the adult diagnosis experience and the best ways for you and your doctor to determine whether you have ADHD as opposed to possibly another situational struggle.

Dr. Raafia Muhammad: Online diagnosis & treatment07 Mar 202200:59:31

Episode 75 with Dr. Raafia Muhammad.

"Now that more women are getting diagnosed, they’re able to talk about their experiences with each other and put their voices out there."

Dr. Muhammad is the Clinical Division Chief at ADHD Online. She joined the company when they were first starting up back in August of 2020, and she focuses on individualized care of her online patients and believes that ADHD can become a patient’s asset rather than a deficit when properly understood and treated.

Dr. Muhammad is board certified in general preventive medicine and public health. She is licensed in multiple states, and lives in Cypress, TX, with her husband and two kids.

We talk all about the process of getting an online diagnosis and what’s involved, and how clients are often surprised to be working with real medical providers and not just bots.

We also talk about unique barriers for women when it comes to seeking a diagnosis on their own, not to mention the subsequent treatment, and how telemedicine is filling the gaps for patients who might not have immediate access to knowledgeable providers in their area.

And Dr. Muhammad addresses some of the skepticism around telehealth companies versus the old-fashioned in-person visits we’ve been used to.

If you’re curious about — or at all skeptical of — the online diagnosis process, you won’t want to miss this episode!

Erica Saum: Hyperfixations & the Enneagram28 Feb 202201:05:21

Episode 74 with Erica Saum.

"My latest hyperfixation is candle-making. But before that, it was playing the ukulele. I learned it in a week and was like, I’m done."

Erica is a teacher based in Nashville, Tenn. She considers herself a witch woman filled with love, warmth, and a love for personal growth. She is a writer for her own ADHD blog, called Unseen ADHD, she’s a photographer with her business Lavender and Lynne Portraiture, and a candlemaker for her witchy business.

Erica was diagnosed with ADHD in 2021, and like many of us, it has been an overwhelming journey of self-discovery. We talk all about the grief and resentment that can come after a diagnosis and the need to forgive the adults in our life like our parents and teachers for not seeing the signs.

We also talk about hobby hopping, hyperfixations, the Enneagram test, leaving the church and the search for community and belonging. I loved this interview and I hope you do, too!

Dr. Emily Anhalt: Emotional fitness & success beyond medication31 Jan 202200:52:39

Episode 70 with Dr. Emily Anhalt.

"The message we’re given is that we shouldn’t get support until we’re falling apart. That’s like waiting until you have heart disease to start doing cardio."

Dr. Anhalt is a psychoanalytic psychologist, emotional fitness consultant, and the co-founder of Coa, an online gym for mental health.

Emily was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7, and her doctoral dissertation (inspired by her own life) was on ADHD and success beyond medication.

Ali Barton: Cognitive (in)flexibility & trusting your gut04 Mar 202401:06:50

Episode 177 with Ali Barton.

“When I have gut feelings about things, you can't change my mind. It drives other people bonkers, but I trust my gut deeply.”

Ali is a licensed mental health counselor in private practice just outside of Boston. She works primarily with women in their 20s through 50s, with ADHD, anxiety, disordered eating/eating disorders, parenting stressors, and relational conflicts. She is also a mom of two children with ADHD, and is passionate about advocating for more awareness around neurodiversity.

We talk about the different presentations of ADHD in women, and how Ali’s sister, Emily, helped her discover her own ADHD. We also talk about Ali’s life-threatening health challenges during her pregnancy, her heart transplant 5 months after her first child was born, and the book about the experience. In retrospect, she realizes that her issues with executive function (especially cognitive flexibility) are what helped her decide to remain pregnant and give birth to her son.

We discuss how Ali’s work with clients has changed since her own diagnosis, and we talk about trusting your gut feelings and intuition, even when others may not understand.

Alex Gilbert: Living with the label of ADHD17 Jan 202200:55:24

Episode 68 with Alex Gilbert.

"The most important thing, whether you’re officially diagnosed or not, is advocating for yourself."

Alex was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at the age of 8. She also knew by the age of 16 that she wanted to go into business for herself and help others who might have been struggling with learning disabilities and/or ADHD.

After spending years working in leadership development, she has finally pursued her dream and now runs a consulting and coaching business that helps other adults with learning disabilities who have been struggling in their careers.

Alex helps others navigate their day-to-day workloads so that they feel supported and are able to reach their highest potential, and she offers free 30-min Declutter Your Mind sessions.

Her biggest goal in creating Cape-Able Consulting is to change the stigma surrounding learning disabilities and ADHD by reminding people how “cape-able” they are.

We talk about her early diagnosis and some of the stigmas and stereotypes she encountered while having the label of a learning disability, and how that impacted her education journey as well as her perception of herself.

We also discuss advocating for yourself in the workplace, whether and when to disclose a learning disability, and why there has been such a recent increase in adult diagnoses of ADHD.

Carrington Bruton: SPECT brain imaging & late diagnosis autism10 Jan 202200:52:51

Episode 67 with Carrington Bruton

"I’m always pursuing something. I’m never chill. For someone who is inattentive, my brain is hyperactive."

Carrington is an actress, best known for her breakout role as ‘Jill’, on the show ‘Empire’. She is also an influencer, a published author, and the CEO of Temple Face & Body, a clean luxury skincare brand.

Carrington was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder back in October 2020 after a SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) brain imaging at one of the Doc Amen clinics. She describes that whole experience, as well as what it’s been like to look back on her life through this new lens and double-whammy diagnosis.

We discuss her experiences as an actress with ADHD and ASD, and we also talk about entrepreneurialism and relationships and why TikTok has become such a great resource for mental health awareness and advocacy.

Karis Knight: Hyperfocus, masking & finding our voice03 Jan 202200:54:11

Episode 66 with Karis Knight

"I now realize why we’re all such great problem solvers — it's because we can’t stop thinking about the problem until it’s solved."

Karis Yves Knight is a visual artist based in Scotland. Her ongoing project called “The V.O.W (The Voice of Women)” came about in an effort to showcase how diverse and multifaceted we are as women. She interviews and gets to know her subjects and encourages them to offer their unique perspectives and life experiences, and then she also paints them to accompany their stories. It’s a beautiful project and endeavor and it’s incredible to think she’s only 24.

Karis and I talk all about how isolated and radicalized we’ve become as a society and how important it is for projects like these that highlight our similarities and how good it is for our souls to empathize and feel connected others.

We also talk about the concept of masking and ADHD, and how often we are told that we’re too much, so we pull back on our natural impulses. We also discuss hyperfocus and burnout, especially around gigantic projects like her art shows.

Dr. Sam Hiew: Empowering girls & women with ADHD20 Dec 202100:58:48

Episode 65 with Dr. Sam Hiew

"Growing up in an Asian country, we didn’t talk about mental health. If you’re struggling, you need to suck it up and get over it."

Dr. Hiew is the Director of ADHD Girls in the UK, and has an extensive background in communications and cancer research.

Raised in Malaysia, she won the Malaysian Prime Minister’s scholarship to study her postgraduate degree in the UK, where she now resides.

Having worked in 16 different business sectors over the years, she spent the last decade as a communications consultant helping doctors, scientists and data experts convey the value of their research to a wider audience through written and video media.

She was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year at the age of 40, and she’s currently pursuing an ASD diagnosis. Her diagnosis (and her daughter’s diagnosis) led her to develop ADHD Girls, where she operates as a vocal advocate and mentor for girls and women with ADHD, helping them understand their brains and learn to thrive in education and workplace systems.

We talk all about her experiences navigating academia both in Malaysia and in the UK, and we talk about motherhood in general and how she’s now able to advocate for her daughter within the school system.

Dr. Hiew is a fantastic resource and a real champion for women and girls and I was so pleased to get this chance to find out more about her own journey. Enjoy!

Raegan Cotton: Facing young adulthood with ADHD13 Dec 202100:53:22

Episode 64 with Raegan Cotton

"Even after I was diagnosed, I still had so much doubt. I wondered if I was just using ADHD as an excuse to make myself feel better."

Raegan is 25 years old and lives in Denver. She works for the political advocacy non-profit New Era Colorado.

Raegan reached out to me because she is a listener of the podcast, but noted that a lot of my guests are in their 30s or older and she felt she could offer an interesting perspective on what it’s like to be facing ADHD in early adulthood at this particular moment in history.

Raegan was born in 1996, so she is literally right on dividing line between Millennial & Gen Z, and we talk about the various impressions and stigmas that were held around ADHD and mental health as she was growing up and how they might differ from older generations.

We also talk about what it’s been like to get this diagnosis during the pandemic as a young adult, as well as the various ways ADHD is still being overlooked and dismissed in girls and young women.

I really appreciated and enjoyed Raegan’s perspective and I’m sure you will, too.

Sari Solden: Why ADHD is different for women06 Dec 202100:55:11

Episode 63 with Sari Solden.

"A neurodiverse brain isn’t something to be fixed. Only dogs and furniture get fixed."

If you had asked me when I first started this podcast who my dream guest would be, I would have said today's guest: psychotherapist, author and researcher Sari Solden.

When she wrote Women and Attention Deficit Disorder back in the mid-90s, she was one of the first to look at how neurodiversity appears differently in women than in men and why that is. Now 30 years later, Sari continues to counsel adults with ADHD and specialize in unique ways in which ADHD presents in women.

In addition to her groundbreaking research and her books on ADHD, she serves on the professional advisory board of ADDA (the Attention Deficit Disorder Association) and was the recipient of their award for outstanding service by a helping professional.

Her books include Women with ADD, Journeys Through ADDulthood, and the workbook A Radical Guide for Women with ADHD (co-written with Michelle Frank), which in my opinion should be required reading for all late-diagnosis women.

I was such an absolute pleasure and honor to chat with Sari, and we talk about the connections she made 30 years ago when it comes to what ADHD looks like in women, why ADHD is overlooked in girls and why women tend to get diagnosed much later in life. We discuss traits that are unique to women, as well as the current “trendiness” of an ADHD diagnosis … and Sari reveals how she rename ADHD if she could.

Janet Murray: ADHD & our insatiable appetite for planners15 Nov 202100:59:35

Episode 60 with Janet Murray

"I've always struggled to switch off. I find weekends and holidays really hard."

Janet is one of the UK’s leading content marketing experts. She’s also a public speaker and host of the Courageous Content podcast and creator of the Courageous Content desk planner and she runs an annual content planning event as well as an ongoing accountability group for business owners who struggle with planning their online content.

Janet & I talk about entrepreneurship and other careers that seem to fit the ADHD brain — Janet is not only a former teacher, she’s also a former journalist. Also, she is (in her own words) ‘one of the most disorganized people on the planet’. which makes her one of the unlikeliest people in the world to launch a desk planner, but she did and it’s amazing.

Dr. Amy Marschall: Accessible, neurodiversity-affirming mental health care26 Feb 202401:02:59

Episode 176 with Dr. Amy Marschall.

“We tend to frame neurodivergence not as ‘How are you doing?” but ‘What problems are you causing for the adults around you?’ If you’re not causing problems, then you must be fine.”

Dr. Marschall has been a licensed psychologist since 2016. She’s a clinical advisor for ADHD Online, and currently owns a private practice, RMH-Therapy. Her clinical specializations include trauma-informed care, neurodiversity-affirming care, rural mental health, and telemental health.

Dr. Marschall is the author of several books, including her most recent children’s book about Slipper, a neurodivergent penguin, and the soon-to-be-released A Clinicians Guide to Supporting Autistic Clients.

We discuss what the term “neurodiversity affirming” means when it comes to the treatment of Autism and ADHD, and we discuss the ways in which Dr. Marschall is working to make elemental health more accessible for neurodivergent clients.

We talk about some of the challenges she faced when seeking her own diagnosis of Autism a few years ago, and we talk about the current and future landscape of telemental health, and how to find accessible, ethical online therapy.

Amy Brown: Sports, jokes & slow processing speed18 Oct 202100:58:31

Episode 56 with Amy Brown

"I have trouble remembering what I’ve read. I have to read the same paragraph over and over. It drives me nuts."

Amy is a Director of Outbound Transportation for Dollar Tree, where she’s responsible for shipping the company’s merchandise from their distribution centers to the company’s stores.

Amy & I talk about her experience with sports growing up — she was a Division 1 basketball player in college — and looking back she feels like athletics and an active lifestyle were so helpful in managing ADHD earlier in her life.

We also talk about slow processing speed, something quite common for those of us with ADHD, and the various ways in which we both experience it — including the agony of rarely getting other people’s jokes!

Sydni Rubio: Insatiable curiosity & dismissive doctors11 Oct 202100:59:31

Episode 55 with Sydni Rubio.

"My hyperactivity manifests as really aggressive driving, as well as impatience and impulsivity."

Sydni is the creator and founder of What in the ADHD? She started the brand in January 2021 with the simple hope of sharing accessible ADHD information with others and the science behind *why* we have certain traits and behaviors. With a strong background in teaching and science, she breaks down a lot of obtuse concepts in relatable, humorous and easy to digest YouTube videos.

What in the ADHD? is now an established LLC that’s dedicated to normalizing ADHD and sharing information about it in a fun, inclusive, and accessible way via blogs, videos, tweets, and community surveys.

We talk about our scientific brains and our insatiable curiosity and desire to solve puzzles. We also talk about some red flags when seeking an ADHD diagnosis and how so many of us have encountered dismissive doctors and felt minimized when seeking a diagnosis. And we also talk about community and advocacy and how feeling seen and knowing you’re not alone is such a HUGE part of the diagnosis journey in adulthood.

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of miscarriages.

Connie Tu: Internalized ableism, PDA & learning to unmask19 Feb 202401:07:25

Episode 175 with Connie Tu.

“In many ways I miss my old mask because it worked for so many years. This new mask is taking a lot of work to build.”

Connie lives in Bradford in Northern England and has spent the last 10 years as a skilled body artist in the medium of natural henna and ethically-sourced jagua. She received a dual diagnosis of Autism and ADHD about a year ago.

Connie was one of my Instagram followers who answered my call for “regular” guests because she definitely didn’t see herself as an ADHD success story. She is currently trying to run her creative business, while parenting two neurodivergent teens and maintaining her marriage.

We talk about her journey to diagnosis and her experiences with untangling her internalized ableism. Connie also talks about her experiences with PDA (pathological demand avoidance), childhood masking, feeling different, and the pressure to be white passing. And we discuss the pressure to model healthy emotional regulation as parents of neurodivergent teens.

And, inspired by Sonny Jane Wise’s new book “We’re All Neurodiverse,” Connie makes the case for renaming ADHD to “capitalistically challenged” — and I’m definitely here for it!

Ellie Hopley: Task paralysis and internalized negative beliefs16 Aug 202100:49:32

Episode 47 with Ellie Hopley

"We have to go above and beyond just to do the simplest task, and I feel like people just don’t understand that."

Ellie is the artist and mastermind behind the successful print and merchandise company Shuturp.

Ellie & I talk all about her previous diagnoses of generalized anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder before she was eventually diagnosed with ADHD — and how it felt like everything in her life finally made sense!

We also talk about task paralysis and how so many of us carry around the weight of internalized negative beliefs about our behaviors — like being convinced we’re lazy, or stupid, or terrible friends, etc — and the effects it can have on our self esteem and our relationships with others.

And we also talk about the fun sides of ADHD — the creativity, the childlike wonder, the energy — and how a diagnosis has helped her recognize and embrace the positive sides.
