In this episode we finally had a chance to bring Bruce Thom back on the show to talk about the new Ignitor and BumbleBee actions from Bat Machine.  In the world of machining and tool and die making, he is one of the masters and his passion for quality and the pursuit of perfection always shows.  A great interview with some neat insight to the behind the scenes and the making of the very best actions available today.

I thought this was a great interview with Derick. It was not planned and not recorded to be one, but in the end Derick ask if he could post it.   Of course, I said yes.   Derick attended our shooting school in March of 2024 and purchased a custom rifle featuring the ACE from us last year.  He is not only a great guy, but a Veteran and former Drill Sergeant. Both of which I have a lot of respect for.

Derick was leaving on an invite to the Black Jack Challenge held by YouTuber Erik Cortina.  He wanted to ask some last minute questions before leaving not just some advice but more in depth questions on our patented and accurizing ACE System.   I reposted his interview here because you get to hear the story of the ACE.  I also want to support Derick and his efforts to grow as a shooter and his channel.

Lastly, he got the cold bore shot and won Eric Cortina's Black Jack Challenge with skill and of course a rifle featuring the ACE System. Thanks goes out to Derick and congrats on some great shooting!

In this episode we talk about the big rocks or priorities in life.  With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 coming up it makes you reflect on what is important in life. I wanted to finally share a tribute song written for a fallen friend to start a scholarship in his name at his high school.    

We discuss why it is so important to learn to use all your equipment for all you can get out of it. There a so many ways to use just a few pieces of everyday kit to make and stabilize your shots without having to buy and bring every gadget under the sun.  That weight savings in your pack will allow you build and carry a little heavier rifle without increasing the overall weight of your kit.  Prioritizing your weight management to maximize or favor the benefits to you as a shooter.

Go and do it now!  I have learned something about the shooting school event itself that I want to share.  With all things in life, taking three days to spend time together is about relationships.  Building, healing, bonding and growing.  In life we rarely get to spend three days uninterrupted doing anything with the people we love.  I am always amazed to watch the joy and smiles those three little days bring.  No matter the hobby or the event, do not hesitate, just go and do it now.  The people in our lives are too important and those moments too precious to wait.

Whether you're putting your new rifle together or re-assembling it after cleaning or maintenance.  Details matter, even the smallest ones if you want any level of repeatability.  That includes using quality tools like fix it stixs.

I was asked about all the troubles and to go into detail on the struggles of making great reloads.  Truth be told, I could not answer or even relate to the question or those who enjoy that kind of torture.  My advice, just make simple great reloads and enjoy the shooting.  Pain and suffering is not required.

A solution to helping correct the current ammo, powder and primer crisis!  As shooters and hunters, we are vulnerable to those outside our world when they decide to jump in and take advantage of a vulnerable situation.  This profiteering goes on more than you know and is more organized than ever.  We hold the key that not only would put a stop to profiteering, but in doing so, would bring back the order of getting the product back in the cycle of producer to consumer.

So let's talk numbers.   Although I am going to share with you my opinions on all the different calibers going forward, the numbers never lie.  In this episode I want to share with you a recoil calculator that I find to be an invaluable tool while trying to build a rifle, select your caliber or even when selecting a bullet.   This tool gives you a chance to change just a couple little things and see the results you will get in both recoil energy and recoil velocity.  And recoil velocity is never spoken off and can make one of the biggest differences in taking your rifles "felt" recoil down a notch or two so you can enjoy shooting it more.  Next episode is going to be on the big .224 calibers, but for now let's give you some tools to run the numbers on your own.

Making the case for the 22 Creedmoor!  In this episode we discuss what might be one of the best cartridges to come about in decades.  The 22 Creedmoor has been flying under the radar for years and with the advent of a whole new line of bullets is poised take the hunting and shooting world by storm.

The health of the outdoor industry in America!  Corporate greed, the copying of best practices and a market ripe for the picking.  Our outdoor industry is in trouble!  The closing of American facilities in favor of cheaper overseas labor is putting lesser quality products on our shores while still asking us to pay premium prices.  Corporate America and its investors have turned their eyes to every part of the outdoor industry looking to gain access to our wallets through slick marketing and cheap overseas manufacturing.  They are not looking to make great and innovative products for our industry.  They are looking to make profits from our industry.  Flush with cash,  they are using any and every available product or brand they can find or abuse to flood our markets with cheap and easily made overseas products, including scopes, binoculars, tents, coolers, clothing, boots and electronics.  And, these are just the tip of the iceberg.  You name it, they are making it and soon could control most if not all of it.  What happens if they decide we no longer need such items and in our best interest decide we can't get them?  When our American outdoor industry is gone and its workers are out on the street, who will be left to protect and preserve our heritage for future generations.  With a decimated industry, who could afford the fight?

Setting the rules of the road.  So, we are going to advocate going with the smallest caliber you think you can get by with.  But how do you compare them?   What are the parameters or measurements you would use to quantify or qualify the results to get an accurate comparison?  This is how I am going to approach this and come up with a score.  This is all with a baseline of comparison shooting a small .224 caliber like the .223 Rem, 222 Rem or 22 Hornet.

Recoil Tolerance Score of 0-100:  How many people out of 100 can shoot 100 rounds through said rifle and enjoy each shot and would come back and come back to do another 100 rounds immediately afterwards like they could with a small .224 caliber?

Group Size Deterioration Score 0-100: How many people out of 100 could shoot said caliber without increasing their average group size by more than 50% when compared to what they could shoot with a .224 caliber? 

Fundamental Deterioration Threshold 0-100:  How many consecutive shots do I think the average person could shoot before fundamentals start to deteriorate?  I feel 99% of the shooting population could shoot up to 100 rounds with a small .224 caliber.

Accuracy Deterioration Score 0-100:  How many people out of 100 could maintain the same level of accuracy with this bigger caliber that they could achieve with a small .224 caliber?

Let's start small.  At least as small as you can legally shoot for hunting in most states.  We are going to kick this series off with the small .224 calibers you can choose from.  The 22 Hornet, 222 Rem and the .223 Rem.   This is not a list of ideas. This is a list of killing-capable calibers for deer- sized game and below.   I know this from experience as my Grandfather and my family has hunted with the first two calibers for decades.  Taking more deer than you could fit in a dump truck and as best I can recall, I never remember him ever asking for help finding one that got away.  That in itself should speak volumes on the value of these unspoken and often forgotten calibers that have been around for nearly 95 years.  Take a listen with an open mind. It might change your shooting and open your world to the idea of going with the smallest caliber you can get by with.
