Keeping up with the pace of innovation in oncology: a conversation with Amy Pierre and Jahda Hill03 Jun 202600:57:25

The pace of treatment innovation in oncology is nothing short of breakneck. But the downsides of innovation are real: HCP burnout, decision fatigue, workforce attrition, and more. How can healthcare providers realistically keep up? Evan sits down with Amy Pierre from Flatiron Health, and Jahda Hill from Avalere Health, to work through the issues of innovation and information—told against the backdrop of Janet Kerrigan’s story of how a series of treatment advances in multiple myeloma helped her move past a terminal diagnosis.

Fighting for care and representation in clinical trials: a conversation with Ricki Fairley and Nirzari Parikh20 May 202600:52:00

Why do people of color experience worse outcomes in cancer? How can they be better represented in clinical trials? Evan sits down with Ricki Fairley of TOUCH, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance, and Nirzari Parikh from Avalere Health, to work through the issues of health literacy, trial design, patient ā€œfear of the sugar pill,ā€ increasing patient self-advocacy, and more—told against the backdrop of LaToya Bolds Johnson’s story of fight and survival with stage 3C triple-negative ductal carcinoma.

Welcome to Within Reach08 May 202600:01:50

If you distil the fundamental idea of health care down to its purest, most unadulterated form, the essence of it just seems so simple. When someone is sick, they should get the care that they need. But there's a heartbreaking reality to healthcare, and cancer in particular.

The messy and upsetting truth is that the number of people who can get the best care — if we can even agree on what that means, which we can't — is fractional. Untold numbers of people can't even get decent care, and millions of people get absolutely no care at all. This is why Within Reach exists: to begin to unwind, understand, and attempt to address the glaring, enormous problems plaguing cancer medicine and medical systems around the world. It's a lofty goal, but it's the one that I, Evan Young, as the host of this show, am going to attempt to tackle.

But even with decades of my own experience as a healthcare communications professional under my belt, I certainly can't tackle these problems on my own. In every episode throughout this season, we'll be bringing in expert guests that cut across a wide array of backgrounds to dig deep into the issues at hand. And for people into oncology, these are some seriously interesting topics: from underrepresentation of people of colour in clinical trials, to breaking through the taboos in taboo cancers, to the challenges facing rural healthcare. We'll be covering topics like this, and more, that are balanced on the cutting-edge of cancer today.

So, if you have a vested interest in oncology, and you share in the goal of getting every patient possible the care that they need, then I invite you to tune into this show: Within Reach, from Avalere Health.

Fighting for the survival of community care in oncology: a conversation with Ted Okon and Maddi Davidson 15 Jul 202600:55:12

Most cancer patients don’t realize that where they receive treatment can be just as consequential as what treatment they receive.Ā

In this week’s ā€˜Within Reach’ episode, Evan Young is joined by Ted Okon from the Community Oncology Alliance to pull back the curtain on the quiet power of community oncology, where care is often closer to home, more affordable, and just as high quality as the big brands.Ā

Alongside Avalere Health’s Maddi Davidson, we unpack how hospital consolidation and the Inflation Reduction Act are reshaping the economics of cancer care.Ā

Closing the rural cancer care gap: a conversation with Wade Swenson and Ryan Taggart01 Jul 202600:51:13

Cancer mortality is falling across the U.S., but for too many patients in rural communities, the gap is widening - not just metaphorically, but physically, too.

Barriers include hours-long drives for chemotherapy, resource limitations in hospitals, and the challenges of navigating cancer while also facing food insecurity and broadband deserts.

In this episode of Within Reach, rural oncologist Dr. Wade Swenson joins Ryan Taggart and host Evan Young to explore how telehealth, decentralised clinical trials, AI, and community‑based care models can bring big‑city innovation to frontier counties.Ā

Realizing the promise of precision oncology: a conversation with Andrea Stevens and Clare Jones17 Jun 202600:53:03

When we talk about precision oncology, we usually talk about breakthroughs. But behind every advancement in targeted therapies and genomic profiling lies a quieter reality: Most patients in the world still can’t reliably access the tests that unlock these headline treatments.Ā

This week on Within Reach, Clare Jones and Andrea Stevens expose the real bottlenecks - cost and reimbursement, fragmented infrastructure, uneven education, and policy blind spots - and explain why single-gene testing is no longer good enough. Together, they map out what it will take to move from isolated success stories, to a future where tailored cancer care is the standard, not the exception.
