The (very small) Silver Lining No One Talks About When Your Dog Passes01 May 202400:50:40

Host Carly gives some life updates, podcast announcements.
Then we have a re-release episode from the Friends With A Dog paid podcast where Ashley & Carly reflect on their lives after the passing of their senior dogs. (Not a depressing episode we promise! There is a lot of laughter and funny stories!) Its taboo to say but we need to normalize how much time and energy goes into caring for a senior dog and then when they're gone, how that time and energy is now returned to you.

Prioritizing Physical & Behavioral Health in Dog Breeding ft. Dr. Jessica @functionalbreeding24 Apr 202401:19:14

In this conversation, Carly welcomes Dr. Jessica Hekman, the creator of The Functional Dog Collaborative, to the podcast.   The FDC was founded to support the breeding and raising of purebred, outcrossed, and mixed-breed dogs while prioritizing the physical and behavioral health. The FDC considers these functional goals more important than strict breed standard or closed studbook.

Topics covered:

  • The Functional Dog Collaborative (FDC) and it's aim to support responsible breeding practices and improve genetics and socialization in dogs.
  • Functional breeding means breeding dogs that are physically and behaviorally healthy and resilient.
  • Common genetic problems in dog breeds can be seen in extreme morphologies, (like brachycephalic faces) or traits that were not intentionally bred for (like epilepsy and shortened lifespans).
  • Different approaches to breeding like outcrossing and creating new breeds, can address health issues.
  •  The current dog culture faces challenges in accepting new breeding practices and changing ideologies.
  • Education and resources are needed to guide puppy seekers in finding responsible breeders.
  • How the Functional Dog Collaborative aims to change the incentive structure in dog breeding through initiatives like the Data Canis platform.

DINK Dog Mom State of Mind w/ Blair of @thedinkdogmom08 Sep 202100:41:43

This week our guest Blair of thedinkdogmom.com  and myself are encouraging everyone to have a DINK Dog Mom state of mind. We talk about being child free and bucking social norms and Blair gives great advice about not having to justify yourself and your lifestyle decisions to anyone. And we discuss about not conforming to what you should look like or do with your life just because you’re a dog mom.

More about our guest:

Shi**y Dog Parents w/ Miranda of The Dog Park Bitch Podcast (Part 2)21 Jul 202101:00:11

This is Part 2 of one very long interview with Miranda from The Dog Park Bitch Podcast.  Part 1 can be found over on The Dog Park Bitch Podcast.  Highly recommend listening to part 1 first where Miranda interviews me and we  SPILL THE TEA about how we've both had our content stolen by other creators.

Part 2 starts off with us rounding out our opinion on having our work copied and our takeaways from the experience. Then we move into me interviewing Miranda about her podcast and travelling around in a camper with her 3 dogs.
And finally we finish the episode off with some humor- Miranda’s podcast name is the dog park bitch and the old name was shitty dog moms so we kept those themes and talked about how sometimes you have to be a bitch at the dog park and then WE RANT about shitty dog parents.

FYI: Fireworks With a Dog02 Jul 202100:18:47

A for your information bonus episode about how to handle firework season with a dog.
General safety advice if your dog is not afraid of fireworks:

  • Don’t let your dog near the fireworks at all
  • If you're at a party your dog is your responsibility.
  • Don't make a big deal out of them (ie don't let them think fireworks are toys)
  • Keep your dog securely on leash and make sure all exits are covered while fireworks are going off.
  • Have identification on them and  microchip updated

Short Term Solutions:

  • Walk them during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off
  • Tire them out but not too tired
  • Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks
  • Put on some music or tv to mask the firework sounds (DogTV)
  • Create a quiet space where your dog can feel in control a ‘den’.
  • Dont make a big deal out of them
  • You can try a Thundershirt
  • Antianxiety meds you will probably  need bloodwork in advance- speak with your vet.
  • CBD is an option but  you need to know the dosage
  • Calming supplements are a potential option, use as instructed.

Long Term Solutions

  • Desensitization is a technique of exposing your dog to a stimulus that would normally cause an undesirable reaction at an extremely low level so that there is no response. As the pet becomes less reactive, it is desensitized through exposure to gradually more intense levels of the stimulus.
  • It takes a lot of time because you're doing a  little bit of training  each day

The One About Hound Dogs w/ @charlottewithdogs and @jonathans.journal02 Jun 202101:13:44

This week I speak with Charlotte and Ashley, who are two fellow foxhound dog moms but also two former guests of the podcast! This is a long episode because we wanted to talk about our hounds ALOT, which comes as a surprise to no-one.

This is a great episode if you have a hound dog or  are curious about the hound breeds. We mainly talk about foxhounds and other large hound breeds but unfortunately weren’t able to talk about the history of all different hounds or some of the smaller hounds like beagles or bassets. However, much of the information about behavior is applicable to hound dogs on a whole.
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Our dogs are genetically related!!
  • The history of foxhounds and how its intertwined with American history.
  • Their energy level isn't as high as you’d expect from a working breed.
  • They are very adaptable to new situations and overall very tolerant and independent which makes them great family dogs.
  • Why traditional training doesn't work very well for hounds.
  • How to train them passively, especially with vocal commands and through modeling behavior from other dogs.
  • Reasons why we love life with a dog!

Our Allergy Allegories w/ Kelsey of @littlepnwpups19 May 202100:41:29

Last week’s episode was all about allergies with a veterinary dermatologist and this week is a follow up to that where I sit down with my friend Kelsey of @littlepnepups to talk about her pretty overwhelming experience with her dog’s (Ava's) allergies.
In my chat with Kelsey we talk about when she first noticed Ava’s allergy symptoms, how she sought out veterinary help, and we end the episode talking about her learnings through it all.
As many of you know Lupin (my oldest dog) has some pretty intense allergies to both food products and environment  so during this episode I add in some of my commiserations and learnings from my experience with Lupin as well.

What You Learn-

  • Skin problems can get very bad, very rapidly
  • Find a Vet that sees and hears you and your dog's needs.
  • Do your own research but also realize you aren't a DVM.
  • Check the ingredients on EVERYTHING
  • Give yourself grace and be patient while you're working hard to help your dog.
  • Allergies do not have a quick fix.

How to Adopt a Dog Pt 2: Figure out your priorities17 Mar 202100:33:31

Part 2 coming atchya! This episode takes you through the steps to figuring out ,your priorities in the type of dog you're looking for. So when you do go to the rescue/shelter to get a dog (explained more in part 3) you will know what you're looking for.

Step 1: Ask yourself why do you even want a dog.
Companionship?
Therapy dog?
Someone to exercise with?

Step 2: Assess your lifestyle and routine.
What is your work schedule?
Am I near kids or other dogs very regularly?
Does my apartment have breed or weight restrictions?

Step 3: Figure out your NEEDS vs WANTS
This one is a bit hard to tease out but a good example is:  I have kids so my future dogs NEEDS to be fine with kids running around but I WANT the dog to actually play with my kids. Either way you're getting a happy healthy dog that will love your family but its an added bonus "WANT" for them to actually be active with the kids.
