From the Vault: Kevin Roy and Carey Buss (2014) 18 Nov 202400:58:56

Technical difficulties this weekend mean you don't get a new episode (sorry), but you get one that might be new to a lot of you: it's the original episode #069 from spring 2014, featuring folk-inspired singer-songwriters Kevin Roy and Carey Buss!

For those unfamiliar with the archival episodes -- when I moved all of my episodes from one hosting provider to another, years ago, I accidentally missed the inclusion of a couple dozen episodes from 2013-14. They're not currently on the feed if you're scrolling through the episodes on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/whatever.

I've been slowwwwwly re-releasing these over the past few years, and here's another. This one is particularly notable because it has absolutely deadly live performances by each of the guests.

Here's what we said about the episode a decade ago: It’s a rootsy, folky, acoustic episode with live performances by guests Kevin Roy and Carey Buss! Both of these fellers are about to head out west on tour, so we give them a sendoff by talking about the oh-so-fitting (but still randomly-generated) “wood” theme.

Need more from these guests? Kevin (later known as Mister K) was also on episode #210 (Dec. 2016) and #543 (Dec. 2020), while Carey also appeared on #130 (June 2015).

Back to your regularly-scheduled programming in a few days. Thanks.

Need more Holy Void? Check out episode #401 (July 2019).

Along with the chat, there are songs by artists who are performing at the event sprinkled throughout the episode, including Econoline Crush, Book of Ghosts, Northern Royals, and Ash & the Arsonists.

WR843: Elliot Feeling 08 Nov 202300:35:37

Good chat on this episode with singer-songwriter/piano player Elliot Feeling, whose release of the new ‘Submariner’ EP is just around the corner!

We talked about their long history in the local music scene (the great Lonely Vulcans, among others), finally putting out a solo record, not getting hung up on classical theory, writing on piano vs guitar, recording at House of Wonders, and much more.

(There are a couple of glitchy moments in the interview -- a hazard of recording calls remotely -- but it in no way takes away from the quality of the episode. Pretend they're not there. Thanks)

If you need more, check out Elliot with past Witchpolice guests Bicycle Face and Mulligrub at X-Cues for the 'Submariner' release show!

WR841: Econoline Crush 01 Nov 202300:38:57

Long running, industrial-tinged alt-rockers Econoline Crush are back with a new record, 'When the Devil Drives' — although they never really left.

I sat down with frontman Trevor Hurst about his roots in the Virden, Man., area, new music, live performance as emotional catharsis and as a way to work through grief, working a day job between tours, and more!

From the Vault: Chivas and Kream (2014) 11 Oct 202301:10:49

Here's a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed.

This one was originally released as #65, featuring local rap duo Chivas and Kream, known for their work on the Deafwish label.

I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2023 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are.

Here's what we said about it nine years ago:

This week's theme is "breakfast" and it features a brand new song by guests Chivas and Kream (Deafwish) written and recorded specifically for the podcast. The fellas chat about breakfast foods, grunge-lite and more.

Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode!

This throwback episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company and by 'Drips and Drops', a new art exhibit by Matthew Powers of Midnight Review Presents, showing now at the Millennium Library's Blankstein Gallery!

WR834: Foxwell 07 Oct 202300:37:08

Mike Fox (vocals/guitar) of psych/new wave/art rock/etc. outfit Foxwell, who just released their debut EP, is on the show!

We talked about the murderer’s row of players in the band — with backgrounds in jazz, classical, rock and beyond — putting on a SHOW rather than just a performance, the “why” of continuing to make music, and much more.

This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company!

WR833: Sean Burns 04 Oct 202300:38:58

Lots of people like country music, but most of ‘em don’t like country music with quite the intensity and specificity of Sean Burns.

Sean was back on the show to talk about his neverending pursuit of buried honky-tonk treasure, his upcoming ‘Lost Country’ record, his gig on bass with Corb Lund, and so much more!

We chat about acoustic guitars, writing catchy songs, working with a producer with a very different musical background, DIY marketing as an independent artist, and much more!

WR831: Bad Gardening Advice 26 Sep 202300:26:18

I get asked if I know the true identity of mysterious music reviewer Bad Gardening Advice (“Steve Schmolaris”) on a regular basis, but I legitimately have no idea — even after recording an interview with him (complete with animated avatar and voice changer).

Stay tuned for a conversation about the new BGA book, his abstract style of writing reviews, staying anonymous, getting to the heart of a record in a non-linear way, and much more!

You probably know Desiree Dorion as a country artist, but her excellent new record, ‘Remember Your Name’, leans hard into roots/Americana territory.

Here's our conversation about the shift in sound, the reaction to the record and its striking cover image, the feeling of starting from scratch seven albums into her career… and much more!

I sat down with singer-songwriter Doug McArthur to talk about his new solo work, years after initially hitting the scene as frontman of local alt-rock act Broken Halo (and later with Soapbox).

Here's a conversation about Doug’s collaboration with Rusty Robot, navigating the strange new world of digital singles and TikTok hits, needing to express himself creatively post-pandemic, and much more!

WR829: Super Duty Tough Work 20 Sep 202300:48:58

Great conversation on this episode with Brendan Grey, frontman of acclaimed Winnipeg live-band hip-hop outfit Super Duty Tough Work!

We talk about the heavy, politically and socially conscious new LP, ‘Paradigm Shift’, maintaining focus on music that matters, being both inside and outside of the Canadian music industry, hyper-local references, and much more.

WR827: Trío Telfær 13 Sep 202301:00:04

As regular listeners know, I like weird shit, and long-running Winnipeg experimentalists Trío Telfær certainly fit that description!

I had a conversation with Corey and Brian about their process of improvisation, being ideologically — but not necessarily sonically — a “jazz” group, their other gigs backing up high-profile locals (i.e. Amos the Kid, Boy Golden, and others), their deep catalogue and upcoming release, and much more!

This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company!

We're back in Morden (virtually) for a conversation with pop-punk solo act Garry "EzRa" Doell!

Check out a conversation about growing up listening to punk/hardcore/metal of the Christian variety, the neverending quest to find bandmates in a small community, performing at the Corn & Apple Festival (and getting a high-profile shoutout), new music, and much more!

The good news: JayWood just released a new EP. The bad news (for Winnipeg): he’s skipping town!

Jeremy Haywood-Smith was back on the podcast to talk about decamping to Montreal, the ‘Grow On’ EP as an extension of 2022’s acclaimed ‘Slingshot’ long-player, and much more.

WR823 Nova / Koziithegoat / SincerelyT / Knathan 30 Aug 202300:43:14

This one's a little different. It's part of a series of episodes I'm doing in collaboration with local rapper Ezoman's Creative Side Entertainment for this year's 'Future of M"you"sic' competition, which is a five-month long showcase of up-and-coming local artists at the Limelight.

Here's the fourth episode, which is similar to my old Quick Hits format (remember that?), and it features a clip of Ezoman giving some background on the event, plus interviews with four of the artists who are participating in the August event: Koziithegoat, Nova, SincerelyT, and Knathan

I wasn't able to hook up interviews with the other two -- Mezziisgone and Forevr Brwn -- but I've included a song featuring both of them at the end.

WR822: The Benefits 26 Aug 202300:39:12

Winnipeg’s The Benefits might be borderline un-Googlable, but big things are going down in their universe.

I sat down with the duo of Snarky Remarkable and Jomaha Nebraska to talk about their new (but also very old) single, expanding to a full band, comedy music (and musical comedy), parody songs, and more!

Note: Due to technical difficulties, the audio for about half of the interview is from my backup recording, which is lower quality (especially on my end of the conversation), but it's still listenable, and fixes itself partway through the episode. Thanks for yer patience.

WR821: The GentleFolk 23 Aug 202300:37:33

Summer in Manitoba is festival madness, and one of the events coming soon is GentleFest, Aug. 25-27 at Ignite Retreats in the Interlake!

I talked to Zach Van Der Hooft of organizing team The GentleFolk about the festival’s roots in campground animations, its connection to a local shitposting forum, building a DIY community, and much more!

This year’s GentleFest features artists like Ami Cheon, Vikings, a Sebastian Owl reunion, and a number of past Witchpolice interviewees, including Stiff Wiggle, Freddy and the Fire Nation, Lounge FM, Shay Wolf (each of whom appear on this episode in song form), Paper Machetes, and Gladly!

WR937: SpinalFluid 02 Oct 202400:48:54

When the world was on pause, Seamus Hamilton-Pattison hunkered down and worked on a heavy, industrial-influenced solo project.

That project, SpinalFluid, released an excellent debut album earlier this year and is actively playing shows.

Here's our conversation about the record, being inspired by Godflesh’s drum machine, translating a solo project into a live band setting, and much more!

Need more from Seamus? Hear him as a member of Greek Riots on episode #099 (Nov. 2014) and Hearing Trees on #224 (March 2017).

Check out our conversation about the record, playing country covers, notebooks of songs going back 20+ years, getting into music in a remote northern community, and much more.

Remember psych/noise/prog/post-rock/etc. outfit Ham?

They’re back — from various corners of the continent — for a pair of reunion shows later this month (Aug. 18 at The Goodwill with Mahogany Frog and Aug. 19 at Rainbow Trout)!

I sat down with Paul Lafreniere (guitar/vocals) to talk about getting back into Ham-mode, defining the band’s weirdo sound, opening for the Pixies almost 20 years ago… and more.

From the teeming metropolis of Morden, Man., it’s Derek Helps, who you may recognize from projects like Lakes and Pines!

Here's a conversation about his excellent new solo album, 'That Night, A Forest Grew', which blends singer-songwriter vibes with atmospheric soundscapes and crunchy alt-rock.

We also touched on the music scene in the Morden area, getting experimental down at the local legion, and much more…

Here's the third episode, which is similar to my old Quick Hits format (remember that?), and it features a clip of Ezoman giving some background on the event, plus interviews with three of the artists who participated in the July event (because, yes, I screwed up and released this a day after it happened) -- AJ Lino, ThatGuy Treva, and Joey Medik.
