In this second podcast, I run through 7 more mistakes it's easy to make:
1. Shooting in Auto Mode
Shooting in Auto severely limits your creative options.
2. Not checking settings
It’s easy to forget to check settings in the heat of the moment. Stay on top of your settings, especially when conditions are changing quickly.
3. Housekeeping
Keep your camera equipment cleaned and properly stored. Mould in lenses will not help your photography.
4. Rushing the shot
Take the time to get your focus and exposure correct and be ready. Often things can happen very quickly, so it’s important to have everything properly set up.
5. Lack of Storytelling
A good photograph has a clear subject, and the background should provide some kind of context. Be a Visual Storyteller.
6. Shooting in Low Resolution
Always shoot in RAW and the maximum file size your camera can support. Social media doesn’t need it, but you’ll be grateful when you get that once-in-a-lifetime shot.
7. Ignoring post-processing
Ethical post-processing is a fundamental part of digital photography.

We all make mistakes, and this week I run through 6 common mistakes photographers make and talk through how to handle them:
1. Poor Composition
Centred subject: Placing the subject in the centre of the image. Try the rule of thirds as a way of creating a more interesting image.
Cluttered backgrounds: Distracting elements in the background take attention away from the subject. Be a ‘Visual Storyteller’ and look at the whole scene before pressing the shutter button.
2. Over- or Underexposure
Failing to adjust for lighting conditions can result in overly bright (blown-out) or too dark (underexposed) images. Look at how and where your camera is measuring light levels.
3. Ignoring Focus
Out-of-focus subject: Understand what your camera is using to set the focus and what is most suitable for the photography you are doing (e.g. central spot focusing, or a zone).
4. Overediting
Editing is a key part of digital photography, but it is very easy to over-edit and ruin a great photograph. As a general rule, keep edits simple and use easy references (such as grass) to provide a benchmark for how saturated an image should be.
5. Using the Wrong Lens
Lenses have their own characteristics and introduce distortions. This might be enlarging elements close to the lens in the case of a wide-angle lens, or compressing perspective if you are using a longer telephoto lens.
6. Poor Lighting
Photography is about using light. Bright light can upset exposure and create a lot of contrast. Golden hours and blue hours can produce very atmospheric effects, but light levels can change rapidly.
Look at the kinds of photography you do and understand what the ideal lighting conditions are, and what you can do to compensate for lighting problems.

Are you tired of feeling stuck following endless photography rules, resulting in images that just… exist? What if I told you there's a way to unlock a deeper, more intuitive connection with your camera, allowing you to capture photographs that truly speak to the soul? In this podcast we’ll look at how you can move beyond rigid guidelines and embracing the organic flow of visual storytelling.
We will look at:
The Illusion of Rules; rules (like the rule of thirds) are often misinterpreted as unbreakable laws rather than helpful guides.
Strict adherence to rules can stifle creativity and lead to formulaic, uninspired images.
Build consistency and expand your style.
Move beyond technical exposure to understand how light sculpts subjects and evokes specific moods.
Experiment with unconventional lighting scenarios – backlighting, rim lighting, atmospheric light – to create impactful visuals.
Explore techniques like negative space, leading lines, and framing that guide the viewer's eye organically through the image.

I usually talk about wildlife photography and thought I'd step back for this podcast.
If you're photographing nature, you're likely to be in an uncontrolled environment. This includes the weather, light, and whether or not your subject will show up!
All of this means that you need to do the correct preparation before heading out with your camera.
In this podcast I talk about:
What gear to take.
When to shoot.
What to think about when photographing:
Animals
Plants
Landscapes

Cheetahs are one of my favourite animals and I know many other people feel the same way.
But, aside from the obvious (i.e. their speed), did you know that there are only 6,500 mature adults thought to be remaining in the wild (from 40,000 in 1960)?
Or, did you know that they almost went extinct 10,000 years ago?
I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Cory Mortensen. Here's some background:
Born in the small town of New Prague, Minnesota, and raised amidst the sun-soaked landscapes of Scottsdale, Arizona, Cory Mortensen embarked on a unique journey that shaped both his life and literary career.
Choosing an unconventional path, his journey began with dropping out of college to immerse himself with a job on Wake Island, gaining valuable experiences that would later infuse his writing with a distinctive perspective. Returning to the United States, he started a dynamic career as a project manager for several prestigious architecture firms, coupled with a venture into real estate by flipping houses. The allure of exploration took center stage when Cory made the bold decision to sell everything and traverse the globe for two transformative years. This period of travel not only broadened his horizons but also laid the foundation for a successful entrepreneurial endeavor. Cory established and grew a business into a multimillion-dollar venture, eventually selling it to pursue a shared dream with his wife, Kate.
Cory has written three books about his travels. You can find out more by visiting his website: www.thebuddhaandthebee.com

Many of us grew up in a culture where it's not OK to fail. However, the most valuable lessons we can learn often come from failure.
When it comes to creative activities, an apparent failure can lead to a complete change of style and direction.
The purpose of this podcast is to encourage you to 'fail' regularly in your photography and to see where these failures take you. Embrace 'failure', don't fear it!

I realised a couple of months ago that I was on track to record 100 podcasts!
The first thing for me to do is to acknowledge and thank you for the support you have given me. I hope you've found them helpful, or, at least, thought-provoking.
I wanted to do something different this time and I've been mulling it over for the last two weeks. In the end, I decided to share my reasons for starting the podcast and some of the stories from my travels.
I also wanted to share a few of the most important aspects (to me) of wildlife and adventure photography. I hope you enjoy it.

The use of space in a photograph has a big impact on the message you are trying to convey to the viewer.
Using the Visual Storyteller approach, you can use your composition to convey a feeling or story that you wish to share with them. This might be the context (the environment) where your subject lives, a feeling of size or significance, or to imply that something has happened, or is about to happen.
How you use space has a big impact on how your viewer with connect with your photograph. I like to think that the longer someone spends looking at a photograph, the stronger the connection they will feel to it, and the subject.

India is an amazing place and I have a love/hate relationship with it: I love the country, the people and the culture, but I hate the bureaucracy.
I thought I would share a little a little of my experience there and why I love it. I've also included some tips that should help you if you are planning a visit.
If you can, I recommend that you spend 10 days or so in a wildlife park (I assume wildlife, and probably tigers, will be one of your reasons for going as you're listening to this podcast) and then allow more time to visit other parts of the country.
Always make sure that you have the necessary vaccinations and that you have the appropriate travel insurance (if you're going off the beaten track, your standard insurance might not cover you).
Final recommendation; use the same airline for internal flights connecting to international flights on the same day.

If you're new to photography (and I'm talking about DSLR and Mirrorless photography primarily), the equipment and settings can be quite daunting. So where to start?
In this podcast I'll take you through what I believe to be the most important considerations for your kit; camera body and lenses, and how to quickly get on top of the 'techy' part.
What is the "exposure triangle" and what do you need to know, and why?
I'll talk you through what you need to know about 'Aperture', 'Shutter Speed', and 'ISO' and how each one impacts your final photograph.
As always, I recommend that you take a training course if you can. A face to face course is likely to get you the best results, if one is available. If you don't have that option, check out on line courses to see if there's one for you. Make sure that:
You like the teaching style
There is a practical aspect where you can apply the theory
There is a money back guarantee if that particular course isn't for you

It's a new year (2024) and with each new year comes new opportunities. If one of those is going on a wildlife photography trip, here are a few things to consider:
Planning
Which animals do you hope to see?
When is the best time to see them?
When are they most active?
Photography
How do you plan to use your photographs?
What difference does that make to your camera settings?
How well do you know your camera?
Do you need to schedule some practice photography?
Can you look at another photographers work (for inspiration) and understand how they achieved a particular result?
Do you need to take a photography course?
Admin
Do you need to get your photography equipment serviced?
Do you have the correct documentation?
Do you have the correct insurance?
You want to make sure that you get as much enjoyment as possible from your trip and spending a little time preparing for it can make all the difference.

This podcast was recorded in December 2023 and I find this a valuable time (at the end of the year) to look back on what I've achieved and look forward to the new year.
So, how was 2023 for you? Did you make progress, or are you not where you hoped to be?
I find that we often tend to focus on what went wrong, rather than what we've achieved. So what have you achieved in the last 12 months and what should you give yourself a pat on the back for?
And, with a new year ahead of us, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?
One challenge for many people is keeping the momentum going, especially once the holiday season is over. So what can you do to keep your photography alive once you return to your normal day-to-day? Here are some suggestions:
Look for sources of inspiration; Instagram, photography awards, books... there is a lot of great work out there.
And... don't forget to make something of your favourite photographs from 2023. How about wall prints, or a photobook (you can have extra copies made to share with others).
What else can you do to make 2024 a great year for you?

Older listeners may remember Chris Bonington; famous as a British mountaineer. Joe is his son and I first met him while training for my Kilimanjaro climb.
Joe ran a physical gym on Sydney's northern beaches. He would train and coach people who were planning major exhibitions (including attempts on Mount Everest). As well as the physical training, Joe would step back and coach the mental requirements needed to successfully participate in extreme events.
Joe has since made his expertise available to people around the world by putting his training on line. You can find out more by checking out his website: http://www.joesbasecamp.com.
In this podcast Joe shares his thoughts on tackling 'extreme' events and shares some of his stories.

What I mean by mood is how a particular image makes you feel. Good photographers will compose their images to suggest, or to invoke, a certain mood in the viewer with their image. If this is something you would like to do, where to you start? In this podcast I'll make some suggestions about how you can take the viewer towards a certain mood when they view your work. Key things to consider are:
Light
Contrast
Colour
Space
And how these can be brought together to invoke a certain outcome.

I only spent a brief time in Botswana as I travelled between volunteer projects in South Africa and Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls). However, Botswana proved to be a treat.
I visited the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park. The best time to visit is the dry season; from June until the end of October, as animals tend to get water from the rivers.
Unfortunately I visited the country at the end of January and it had been very wet. This meant that the wildlife was scattered throughout the very green countryside. That said, we had a few pleasant surprises when wildlife appeared by the side of the highway we were on!

Camera equipment has a deserved reputation for being quite expensive, but is it necessary to spend a lot of money to get the equipment most appropriate for your style of photography?
Todays smartphones are very capable and can be even more flexible with a few additions.
Or, will a basic DSLR or Mirrorless setup give you everything you need without the price tag?
A little planning before you buy can save you a lot of money if you ask the right questions.

Hyenas are probably the most misunderstood African mammal. It's likely that what you think about them (unless you've taken the time to find out more about them) is almost the opposite of the truth.
Are they related to dogs? No, and some of their behavior is closer to a cat.
Do they just eat dead meat? Sometimes, but one species kills most of its food.
How important are they to the ecosystem? Very.
Are they stupid? No, and some studies have shown them to be more intelligent than chimpanzees in some tests.
Hopefully you'll learn something new about these amazing animals in this podcast.

Uganda probably isn't at the top of your list of places to go to see African wildlife, unless you hope to see mountain gorillas.
Uganda and Rwanda are the best places to see mountain gorillas and I spend a couple of weeks in Uganda in 2022. Uganda boasts a variety of wildlife and offers good value. It's definitely worth considering, but there are a few things you need to be aware of.

The ongoing debate between DSLR and Mirrorless cameras and which is best, continues. Buying your first camera is a big investment, so what do you need to think about and which is best for you?
I've spoken about this subject before in the context of wildlife photography. This may or may not apply to you and I thought it was time to record something more general.
In short, most camera manufacturers have stopped investing in DSLR equipment and have moved over to Mirrorless cameras. This means that some of the advantages of DSLR cameras are reducing and it's fair to say that Mirrorless is probably the best choice for most people.
But there are things to consider when it comes to deciding which camera is best for you.

I’ve shared quite a few tips in some of my other podcasts and I began thinking about the what were the things that made the biggest impact on my own photography.
On reflection, there are 5:
Understanding shutter speed and how to create movement in an image.
Understanding Aperture, especially how to control depth of field.
Experimenting with different compositions and how they changed the impact of the photograph.
Understanding how to create a specific mood using contrast and lighting.
How to make a connection between the subject and the person viewing the image.
I hope that at least one of them inspires you!

Sooner or later, most of us will experience something going wrong when we travel. It might be a missed flight that leaves us stranded, or a vital piece of equipment might get damaged - I'm particularly thinking about photographers here.
Thinking ahead at the planning stage is vital for any successful trip and there are a few things you can do to minimise the chances of experiencing a serious problem while travelling.
Here are a few things I suggest you think about...

My guest on this podcast is Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove. Jeroen describes himself as a hybrid photographer, shooting both wildlife and landscapes. In this podcast, we talk about how he started in photography and he shares some of his experiences photographing wildlife in Iceland, where he lives, Greenland and Antarctica.
Jeroen shoots with both Canon mirrorless cameras and drones. He describes the difference that using drones has made to his photography and the equipment he currently uses.
He also runs workshops and shares his insights into the most common mistakes people make when it comes to wildlife photography.

Rhinos are one of those iconic species that are under a dire threat of extinction. Did you know that there are five species still alive? And that two of them are in Africa and the remaining three are located in Asia?
In this podcast I share a little information about these animals and talk about their biggest threat; poaching.
Please note that I do talk about the process that some poachers use.
I also talk about how you might be unwittingly helping poachers.

A few questions come up fairly regularly, so I thought I would provide some answers to them. These are the questions:
What does Manual Mode mean and do I need to know it?
How do you achieve sharp focus?
Do I have to edit my photos?
What gear do I need to get great photos?
What's the best lens?
What is White Balance and do I need to know it?
What's the difference between JPG and RAW?
As I mention in the podcast, if you don't understand any of the answers, or just want to get a more complete understanding of photography, I recommend you invest in a course that assumes no knowledge on your part. After all, you don't know what you don't know!
If you can't find a course, I offer a complete course for DSLR and Mirrorless users. You can learn more by clicking here.

So, you've made your decision and booked your next adventure, what are the next steps to take to make sure it's something you'll remember for the rest of your life?
Having a big adventure is often about more than ourselves. To get the most from it, it's great to be able to share it with others. So what are the steps to take to make sure you come back with memories and stories you can share?
In this podcast, I'll give you some ideas...
Start with the end in mind. What I mean by that is to think about how you will share your adventure. Do you want to make a photobook on your return, put together a gallery for social media, or use full-sized prints?
Research your destination; what images have other photographers taken that capture your destination?
Who is going with you and how can you make this about their memories too?
What should you do on your arrival to get the most from your adventure?
Do you need to buy additional equipment?
What needs to make it to your suitcase/backpack?
Listen to the podcast for more ideas!

Karolina grew up in Sweden and took a volunteering assignment in South Africa to work with horses. She quickly fell in love with the South African wildlife and started taking photographs.
I've been following her on Instagram for a while, and love her photography. I had a great conversation with her and learnt more about her story and the work she now does in South Africa. This includes wildlife photography workshops with her fiance.
You can see some of her photographs and find a link to her website on her Instagram account.
Learn more about her work and get some tips that might help you with your photography. She has also just announced some workshop dates for 2024, so, you might want to join her in South Africa.

Having lived in Sydney, I'm bound to be a little biased. But it definitely is one of my favourite places.
From a nature and wildlife perspective, Sydney has access to great national parks and bushwalks, and, of course, humpback whales for six months of the year.
If you like history, it offers museums that are on a par with many European and US exhibitions, many of which have regular speaking guests and temporary exhibitions. (And I recommend "The Fatal Shore" by Robert Hughes if you're interested in the history of the early European settlement.)
It is also home to two of the structures that define Australia; the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
If you're thinking about going, give it a go!

I was shocked to find that these iconic animals are another species facing extinction. They are found in southern and eastern Africa and many of the remaining animals live in protected areas.
There are three species of zebra; the plains zebra, Grevy's zebra and the mountain zebra, plus subspecies.
In this podcast, I'll talk about how to differentiate between them, and their lifestyle and habits. I'll talk about predators and, of course, their stripes!

Understanding low-light photography opens up another world of possibilities for wildlife photography. The fact is that a good deal of activity happens once the sun has gone down, and it is very rewarding to be able to share the world that comes to life with people who might not be aware of it.
However, as always, there are a few things to remember and some mistakes to avoid. Here are the ten most common low-light photography mistakes:
Using Too Low an ISO
Shutter Speed Too Slow
Not Using a Fast Lens
Relying Too Much on Autofocus
Poor Exposure Compensation
Ignoring White Balance
Not Shooting RAW
Forgetting About Subject Movement
Overusing Noise Reduction
Ignoring Light Sources
Join me as I take you through the solutions to these problem areas.

I was looking at some images on display to celebrate Nature photography Day and wanted to share some thoughts.
What makes a compelling wildlife photograph for you? What is it about a photograph that makes it stand out?
Here are a few things to consider:
Viewer location: Where are you taking the viewer? It may be somewhere they wouldn't go themselves, possibly underwater, or up in the air.
Using unusual angles: Photograph the animal in an unusual way, or from an unusual angle. An example is an elephant crossing a river, but shot from underwater.
Get in close: Sometimes it's possible to build a level of trust with an animal such that you can get quite close to it. This opens the possibility of shooting very intimate, close-up, shots.
Composition: Good composition is essential for a great photograph, so what options do you have available? What's the best way to frame your subject so that the picture tells something of their story?
Unusual locations for the subject: This might be wildlife in areas we would usually think of as our own.
How to use the light: How can you use light during the golden hours? Can you make use of backlighting to make a more compelling image?
How can you create an 'atmosphere', or mood? Creative use of lighting and colour can create an upbeat mode, or you might choose something with a hint of danger. Will switching to black and white alter the mood?
Capture a moment: Catching and freezing an activity that is usually over in less than a second invites the viewer to see the subject in a way that is impossible in the wild.
I hope you get some ideas and inspiration from this podcast.

Whether you want to practice before a big trip, or you want to explore the wildlife where you live, you'll find there is a lot of wildlife wherever you live.
You might be fortunate to live in the country and there are obvious subjects you can photograph. But have you thought about the 'micro' world that is around you?
What dramas take place everyday that go unseen by most people. What stories can you tell, visually, that open up the natural world that surrounds us all?
In this podcast I take a look at how almost everyone can find 'wild' subjects and develop their photography, and storytelling, skills.

I find the countryside of Namibia to be stunning and it was a place I'd wanted to visit for a long time. I got my wish at the end of 2019 when I volunteered with EHRA.
Namibia has the least rainfall of any sub-Saharan country and has some amazing attractions. These include the huge sand dunes along the Skeleton Coast, Etosha National Park, and (of course) the wildlife.
I spend a week or so in Swakopmond, on the coast, and enjoyed my time there. I was volunteering with EHRA who spend one week per fortnight tracking the local population of African Desert Elephants in the wild. This allows them to check their health and to see where they are going (and help the local people to live in harmony with them).
I mention that Namibia has a population of approximately 2.25 million and an area of roughly 825,000 sq kilometers. By comparison, France has an area of 551,000 squ km and Alaska an area of 1.72 million squ km (making Namibia roughly half the size).
If you would like to know more about the elephants, and maybe get involved in supporting EHRA, I recommend their website: ehranamibia.org

I've been photographing humpback whales since 1993. My first experience was while volunteering with Curt and Mich Jenner on Enderby Island where they were trying to find the mating and calving grounds of the western population of humpback whales.
Since then I've been lucky enough to live in both Perth and Sydney, both of which witness and annual humpback whale migration.
In this podcast I walk about some of my experiences with whales, and give you some facts and figures to help understand them.
Humpback whales make up the majority of the photographs in my "Wild Earth" collection. The revised collection will be launched at the end of June 2023.

There are certain phrases and aspects of photography that tend to be taken for granted. However, particularly if you're new to photography, or an aspect of photography, you might not understand what they mean.
In this podcast, I look at 12 questions that cover some of these aspects. They are:
What is the difference between optical and digital zoom?
What is depth of field and how is it controlled?
What is the difference between a large and a small aperture?
How can I get a blurry background?
What is the difference between single and continuous auto-focus?
Why doesn't my sunset look colourful?
How can I avoid red-eye in photos?
What is the histogram (on the camera rear display) used for?
Why is my subject a little out of focus?
How can I get a sharp background?
Why are some of my pictures grainy?
What is a lens hood for?
As always, you can contact me with you questions (and any other topics you'd like to see addressed) by emailing me at graham@ge.photography.
You can also ask about my online photography courses (Smartphone and DSLR/Mirrorless photography).

I thought I would share with you the top places I've been to, places that I would like to visit again.
The first of these is Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls is a place I've wanted to visit for a long time and it didn't disappoint. It's located in northwest Zimbabwe on the border with Zambia.
Zimbabwe has had a tough time in recent years, yet was once home to one of the early civilisations of the world; Great Zimbabwe. This was founded by the Bantu people in the iron age and their descendants, the Shona people, form around 80% of the current population (15 million people).
This part of Africa is full of wildlife and the town of Victoria Falls is on one of their migration routes. I saw baboons and warthogs regularly and it's not unusual to see an elephant walking down the main road of the town.

One of the things that interests me the most about wildlife is learning about their habits and behaviours.
In this new series, I'll be talking about animals in my fine art photography collections and trying to fill in their stories.
I've deliberately started with elephants as I've spent more time with them than with any other animal (other than humpback whales). In addition to a number of elephant photographs in my collections, I've also put together a couple of photobooks about them.
I hope you find the podcast interesting (and apologies for anything I managed to miss out!).

People make a lot of mistakes when photographing wildlife. In this podcast, I’ll take you through ten of them and talk about what you can do to avoid them. The mistakes are:
Shooting down onto the animal.
Shooting at midday.
Using an ISO that’s too low.
Using the wrong shutter speed.
Zooming in too close.
Not cleaning the lens.
Not respecting the animal.
Not using a guide.
Not stabilising the camera.
Dressing inappropriately.

A major part of a successful wildlife photography experience is preparation. Doing the right preparation can make the difference between having a great experience and a frustrating one. The problem is that most of us do not have access to wildlife every day, or do we?
Getting to know your own area and the wildlife in it can give you access to all the wildlife you need to become confident when you do travel for your big trip. Most of us have our eyes wide open when we visit a new place, but it's almost the opposite in our home environment.
Getting to know our own environment involves much the same steps we need to take for a successful wildlife trip. This includes local research and getting hands-on practice with our camera gear, and understanding what it is and isn’t capable of.

I talk a lot about shooting in RAW, but what do you need to know if you've only shot JPG files?
I'll take you through a few things in this podcast:
How to handle the 'native' RAW file from the camera (the camera manufacturers file type).
What a TIFF file is and why you should use it as your image master file.
When to use JPG files.
I'll also briefly talk through my editing process using Photoshop.
Switching to RAW can feel like a big step if you've never used it before. However, there is a huge difference in the quality of RAW and TIFF files when compared to JPG files.
So, if you've ever taken a great photograph but have been disappointed with the quality (and resolution), switching to RAW will transform your photography.
