The Art of Nature (Unst, Shetland) - A Social Club Preview06 Aug 202400:18:52

How far north can you go in Scotland?

In today's episode, I'm sharing with you a bonus story that I produced for my Patreon community, the Wild for Scotland Social Club, back in season 1!

'The Art of Nature' is a short story about my first trip to Unst, the northernmost island in Shetland (and thereby in Scotland as well as the entire UK). We're visiting a glass artist who draws inspiration from her surroundings and go for a walk to one of Scotland's most picturesque cliffs - all in the search for a connection between nature and art.

Revisiting Hiking the Hebridean Way (+ Barra Travel Tips)11 Jun 202400:28:52

Last month I visited the Isles of Barra and Vatersay - two islands in the Outer Hebrides that I hadn't returned to since solo hiking the Hebridean Way in 2018.

My trip inspired me to revisit one of the first stories I shared with you on Wild for Scotland. It's called 'Out of Nowhere'. But there is another reason why I decided to give this story an encore... you'll have to listen to find out!

After the story, we're sharing an updated tips section with my top tips for a trip to Barra and Vatersay.

What happens when a storm derails your island adventure plans? You follow the advice of locals and go on an unexpected adventure off the beaten path.

'Over the Ratagan Pass' is a story about an unexpected detour to the tiny village of Glenelg. Like most people, had only planned to take the Glenelg ferry to the Isle of Skye. But when a storm put the boat out of action, I had no other choice than to stay put and explore what was right in front of me.

Introducing: The Coast That Shaped the World07 Mar 202300:24:37

If you love stories about the Scottish coast, The Coast That Shaped The World is an app full of audio stories that I think you might enjoy!

The Coast that Shaped the World, or simply Coast, is a gathering of stories reflecting and celebrating the people, communities, heritage, culture and environment of the west coast and islands of Scotland.

More than 30 local story gatherers spent a good part of the pandemic to collect over 1,300 stories about a great variety of coastal subjects. The aim of the project was to get local communities involved in telling their own stories, and to allow those of us who are interested in listening to learn about lesser-known areas, the characters who inhabit them and parts of history that are that don’t always get the attention they deserve.

The app features many of the stories that were collected, some background about the storytellers who donated them and a map to help you connect the stories to their place of origin. But the part that I’m most excited about is the audio section of the app where you can listen to recordings of stories from all over the west coast.

This episode features five of my favourite stories from the app.

The Coast That Shapes the World app is available on the App Store and on Google Play and is completely free of charge.

Listen to my stories that I mentioned in the episode:

This episode was created in partnership with The Coast That Shaped the World, a project of the University of Highlands and Islands.

Revisiting Whisky Trip to Islay (+ Tips for Fèis Ìle)14 May 202400:27:21

With the Islay Festival (Fèis Ìle) just around the corner, let's revisit another classic Wild for Scotland episode. 'An Acquired Taste' traces my journey to become a whisky drinker in Scotland and tells the story of my first visit to the Isle of Islay.

Famous for its heavily peated whiskies, Islay is home to nine working distilleries - with more underway! Every year at the end of May and early June the island hosts the Islay Festival, or Fèis Ìle in Gaelic. And as you can imagine, whisky plays a huge role in that!

After the story, we're sharing an updated tips section with my top tips for attending Fèis Ìle, whether you're going this year or planning a future trip to the festival.

You can find even more festival tips in my Fèis Ìle guide and travel inspiration for Islay and Jura here.

Kathi Kamleitner on Snorkelling and Creative Storytelling on Wild For Scotland13 Dec 202200:37:57

Listeners of Wild for Scotland know Kathi Kamleitner as the writer and host of the show. Long-time listeners might even know her as the creator of the Scotland travel blog Watch Me See. But in this conversation with Wild for Scotland co-producer and sound designer Fran Turauskis, Kathi shares more about what brought her to Scotland, her creative process and her time at the Snorkelling Artist Residency hosted by the Argyll Hope Spot.

We recommend listening to last week's episode 'Creature of the Sea' as we'll refer to it multiple times throughout this episode.

The story in the middle of this episode is an excerpt of 'Step by Step' (Season 2, Episode 8).

Creature of the Sea - Snorkelling at the Argyll Hope Spot06 Dec 202200:25:52

'Creature of the Sea' is a collection of stories and poems inspired by my time at the Snorkelling Artist Residency hosted by the Argyll Hope Spot. Me and a group of 10 other artists were able to explore the abundant underwater world of this stretch of coastline and learn to draw underwater. Our snorkel explorations were guided by local experts, experienced swimmers and wildlife artists and weaved together lessons of creativity, biology and water safety.

The result of my time at the Argyll Hope Spot is a little different than my usual storytelling. We're staying firmly underwater for the duration of my story which is broken up into short pieces of poems and prose, separate, but all connected by the sounds weaving through the narrative.

The music you'll hear alongside my words was composed by Jennifer Austin, an artist and musician from Orkney, who also participated in the artist residency. In fact, some of my texts started developing as I listened to Jen working on melodies inspired by our swims.

Visit our website to find the full show notes incl. the transcript and tips for your own trip to the Argyll Hope Spot.

Revisiting Stargazing on the Isle of Coll (+ Stargazing Tips)02 Apr 202400:28:35

It's International Dark Sky Week! ✨ 🔭 🪐

To celebrate we're revisiting an episode about one of my favourite islands on the Scottish west coast. 'Day and Night' is a story about my first trip to the Isle of Coll. It lasted only 24 hours, giving me a taste of everything Coll has to offer by day and by night. Rugged coastlines, wild waters, beautiful beaches, fascinating history, welcoming locals and of course, dark skies. Coll is a Dark Sky Community, which means the night skies are unspoilt by light pollution. On a clear night, you can bathe in the dazzling light of millions of stars.

After the story, we've prepared an updated tips section with my top tips for stargazing in Scotland.

Check out my up-to-date Isle of Coll travel guide.

Note that IsleGO is sadly no longer operating. A great alternative for boat trips in the area is Tiree Sea Tours - they are based in Tiree but also offer trips with pick up in Arinagour on Coll.

More to it - Black History Walks Edinburgh12 Apr 202200:25:11

'More to it' is a story about links between Scotland and the trans-Atlantic slave trade, but it's also a story about outstanding Black Scottish people and the ways in which Edinburgh locals supported the abolition movement.

We're joining a Black history walking tour with Lisa Williams and make our way from the grand streets of Edinburgh's New Town to the cobbled lanes of the medieval Old Town. We'll hear stories about controversial monuments, ethical arguments, family connections and more.

Visit our website to find the full show notes incl. our top tips for a trip to Edinburgh.

Book a Black history walk in Edinburgh here or drop Lisa an email to enquire about private tours.

Coming soon: Season 305 Apr 202200:01:59

Wild for Scotland is coming back for its third season and the first new episode will be out next week.

I’m back on the road and will combine my passion for storytelling with the best thing about travelling - meeting new people.

Inspired by Scotland’s Year of Stories, this season is called “People of Scotland”.

I will be meeting with folks all over the country, and write immersive stories about the time we spend together, but also interview them to hear their stories in their own words.

This season will include some exciting conversations with people in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the west coast - to name just a few. We’ll talk about life in Scotland, favourite places to visit, and of course about what makes them wild for Scotland.

Season 3 is kicking off next week, so go tell your friends about it and help me spread the word by sharing this trailer on social media.

Tune in next week for new stories from Scotland!

Showtime - The best Sunrise on the Isle of Skye21 Dec 202100:11:59

'Showtime' is a story about a trip to the Isle of Skye in winter. We're getting up well before the crack of dawn and set out to visit one of the most beautiful places on the Isle of Skye. Icy roads, steep inclines and tired eyes won't keep us from this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

This is actually a story I initially shared with my Patreon subscribers last summer. If you like it and would like to hear more stories like it between seasons, join my Patreon here.

Use my guide for the Isle of Skye to plan your trip to the island.
