| 393. Patricia Gordon Stevens - Leaving: The Fear, Shame & Coercive Control Follow After You Escape | 06 Oct 2026 | 00:56:55 | |
This story comes with warnings. If this episode becomes too intense, stop and do what is best for you.
Patricia Gordon Stevens knows what it is like o leave an abusive marital relationship. What she wants people to understand is that leaving is not necessarily the end of the abuse, or the end of the fear.
After leaving her own abusive marriage, Patricia experienced the psychological aftermath that can follow a woman long after she has physically left. The fear, the hyper vigilance, the shame, the erosion of trust in her own judgment, and the difficult process of rebuilding a life that feels safe again.
One of Patricia's strongest messages is "We need to stop simply telling women in abusive relationships to "just leave." it is not helpful. It is complex. And there are risks and psychological consequences. She will tell us about these and more.
Instead, we need to ask, "what can I do to help?"
We compliment Patricia. Because her own experiences informed her novel entitled, "Madness in Memphis."
It is a book that explores coerce of control and what happens psychologically after a woman escapes and abusive relationship.

| 377. Re-Release - Katie - Pt 2 of 2 - Escalation to Emotional, Physical, and Near‑Fatal Violence | 01 Sep 2026 | 00:42:45 | |
This is part two of a two-part story with Katie. Be sure you are ready to hear this story. As it proceeds, you will be hearing about horribly abusive physical violence and actual torture... Trigger warnings need to be expressed due to both the content and graphic descriptions.
If this story is too intense for you, please stop listening and take care of yourself.
Katie's Story
When Katie met Mark, he appeared as this attractive guy playing amazing bass fiddle in a rockabilly band. She loved his music and soon felt he was the one.
As soon as they were introduced, they were an item from the start. Things happened fast as Mark and Katie seemed to click in all manner of speaking. But, as time wore on, she found herself to be his total support person, seeing to it that his career came first. She was doing everything imaginable to pay the bills and make ends meet. His sole purpose was to find stardom making his music.
Mixed into the relationship came the warning signs that were missed when any person is not educated about them. The isolation. The jealousies. The various kinds of emotional abuse that creep in. And then came physical abuse, which was just horrible.
Katie is fortunate to be alive today. Had Mark finished what he intended, he would have murdered her.
This story is not for everyone. Be careful with those you share this story.

| 383. Gaslighting and Psychological Manipulation | 29 Aug 2026 | 00:16:11 | |
This is a blend of survivor-centered education, psychology, and clear red-flag guidance. And it's all grounded in research.
We call this: Gaslighting and Psychological Manipulation.
This is not an interview with a survivor. It is not red flags wrapped into a story. This is about the red flags you need to know so you will never be fooled by someone trying to use digital technology to control and stalk you in a relationship.
It is a fairly short episode, so it is easily heard in one sitting. And so you can hear it again and again.
You might want to take notes. This information can save someone's life.

| 375. Re-Release - Jen Lee - A Survivor’s Story of Dating Abuse, Emotional Trauma, and Recovery | 25 Aug 2026 | 00:59:39 | |
I met Jen Lee six years ago when she and I launched separate podcasts at around the same time. Both podcasts are heavily aimed at identifying and supporting survivors. Jen and I share podcast tips and have remained professional friends ever since.
Residing in Virginia, her first marriage ended amicably (really). She wanted a relationship that matched her energy and zest for life. While having an after-work bite with coworkers, she met a guy and instantly fell for him. A fast-moving, long-distance relationship ensued with Rob, a businessman from New York.
A trusting person, Jen became caught up in a relationship that can only be described as “crazy”. Today, with the wisdom of years, Jen can look back and describe all of the warning signs that could have saved her from three years of heartache and misery had she only known better.
You need to hear this one as it plays out.
Jen’s survivor podcast is entitled, “I Need Blue”. Her book is called, “Why I Survived”. This is her website: "The Healing in Sharing"

| 374. Listen to the Mind of an Abuser - Our Eighth Installment | 18 Aug 2026 | 00:18:09 | |
We want you to hear from the mind of an abuser once more...
This episode, our eighth in this "Mind of the Abuser" series, comes with content and trigger warnings: Domestic abuse, domestic violence, language, and graphic violence.
We have heard enough about the minds and justifications of abusers to have insights into what we would probably hear.
It would sound like the excuses for actions taken only to gain control over another person. It would be a relentless pushback. There would be no apologies. That is what you will hear in this episode.
This episode will talk about the Warning Signs of a potentially unhealthy (dangerous) relationship. But, this is from an abuser's point of view.
The voice you will hear on this WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast episode was created by a computer program. It is not a real person's voice.
The words spoken are a composite of beliefs and concepts expressed by dating and domestic abusers found within articles and interviews. They have been collected over nearly two decades. They have been reassembled as complete ideas and thoughts.
This episode illustrates how abusers portray themselves as victims.
There is not one "portrait" that fits all abusers, of course, but many never take ownership of their words or actions, and they justify their abusive and destructive behavior.

| 373. Emily’s Story - Pt 2 of 2 Pts: Groomed, Controlled and Stalked by an Abusive Predator | 11 Aug 2026 | 00:44:10 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. There is a description of a rape. There is drug usage and both knife and gun violence. There is both emotional and verbal abuse. There is physical violence and the use of adult language. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
This is part two of a two-part story with Emily. It illustrates how an innocent young woman can become, swallowed up when she's manipulated, groomed, and controlled by an abusive predator.
The ways she was taking advantage of during her young life were despicable. There is no way we can explain why some people become so cruel to other human beings. But it happens. It happens to people who are no different from you, your family members, your friends, anyone.
This is a challenging story. So, prepare yourself for what you will hear. Dating abuse and domestic violence are despicable. We feel it is important to illustrate what happened so you take steps to be ready to detect the possibility of abuse--and avoid it in your life.
Bill Mitchell
Keywords & Themes: Trauma bonding, divorce, overcoming domestic abuse, single parent family struggles, women’s empowerment, and resilience.

| 362. Megan Margherio - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - "Everwoven": Overcoming Stepbrother Abuse & Abusive Marriage | 21 Jul 2026 | 00:41:43 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
This is part two of two parts with Megan Margherio, author of "Everwoven."
Megan's upbringing included abuse at home from her stepbrother. Her mother and stepfather were no help when she came to them while dealing with her stepbrother's physical and sexual attacks. They never believed her pleas. Her description of those years is distressing, and our hearts go out to her for suffering as she did.
She later thought she had met the right guy. He tricked her into thinking he was a good person; he was anything but that. His abuse was the underlying current of their marriage.
This is a survivor story. It is worth your time to follow the heroic life of Megan and see how she managed to be so positive when nothing appeared to be working in her favor.
Stories like this should be considered practical exercises in what can and does happen all over the world. Abusers know how to put on the mask of nice people so they can gain control. When everything seems just about right, they become angry controllers that we hear about way too often on this podcast.
Today, Megan is a much happier person, and she encourages those who are being victimized by abusers to figure out how to break free and do it. See information below and find your freedom! And read Megan's book, "Everwoven."

Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
I was invited to appear on the podcast, This Is Actually Happening, about four years ago. It was a breakthrough for me because it exposed my podcast to many thousands more listeners than I had back then.
The interview did well in bringing my family's tragedy out so people could hear and understand what happened. I wanted families to know what happened to us could happen to anyone's child. And I wanted them to know the kinds of warning signs we knew nothing about in 2005 when Kristin was murdered.
Thanks to Whit Missildine and his staff at This Is Actually Happening for bringing me to their show. The boost I received from this appearance would have taken me years to achieve.

| 359. Kayleigh - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - Abused for 15 Years. Love Bombing, Red Flags & Breaking Free from Controlling Husband | 07 Jul 2026 | 01:06:51 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
This is part two of two parts with Kayleigh.
Kayleigh was in a relationship for 15 years. In fact, it ended only weeks ago.
She wanted to bring us her story as soon as she could. And it is worth your time and attention.
Her upbringing included abuse from her mother and father. She also had abusive relationships in her dating years. She thought she had found the right guy when she met Jesse. To her, he was the equivalent of a big cuddly teddy bear. So she fell for him completely.
In the beginning, they spent every waking hour together. Everything seemed just perfect. But once he knew he had her, things changed rapidly.
Once again, you might want to take notes while listening to this one. Because you will find red flags throughout.
Stories like this should be considered practical exercises in what can and does happen all over the world. Abusers know how to put on the mask of nice people so they can gain control. When everything seems just about right, they become angry controllers that we hear about way too often on this podcast.
Today, Kayleigh is a survivor, who is still getting used to having her freedom back. She is a much happier person, and she encourages those who are being victimized by abusers to figure out how to break free and do it. See information below and find your freedom!

Keywords & Themes: Trauma bonding, divorce, overcoming domestic abuse, single parent family struggles, women’s empowerment, and resilience.

| 354. Anna Astwood Speaks about Her New Book, "But He Said He Loved Me" | 25 Jun 2026 | 00:16:03 | |
This episode talks about a new book entitled, "But He Said He Loved Me."
Anna Astwood has been a survivor guest on WHEN DATING HURTS twice.
During her first interview, she said she started a book two decades ago, but put it away, and she did not finish it
When she returned for her second interview in December 2025, she mentioned her book again. She was urged to pick up the book and bring it to a close. Then publish it.
Well, she did.
Here is what Amazon has to say about Anna's book:
"But He Said He Loved Me"is a powerful and unflinching memoir about first love, manipulation, survival, and the long road back to oneself.
At 15, Anna believe she had found the kind of love every teenage girl hopes for. But what began as an intense romance, slowly transformed itself into a relationship marked by control, threats, and escalating violence.
Like many victims of abuse, she didn't leave – not because she was weak, but because she had been slowly conditioned to stay.
"But He Said He Loved Me" is more than a memoir. It is a lifeline for survivors, a call to awareness for parents and educators, and a powerful reminder that love is not supposed to hurt.

This is a blend of survivor-centered education, psychology, and clear red-flag guidance. And it's all grounded in research.
We call this: Blame Shifting -- What It Is. How to Deal With It.
This is not an interview with a survivor. It is not red flags wrapped into a story. This is the red flags you need to know so you will never be fooled by someone trying to use digital technology to control and stalk you in a relationship.
It is a fairly short episode, so it is easily heard in one sitting. And so you can hear it again and again.

| 356. Rereleasing Erin's Story - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - The Nightmare of Escaping Charlie's Demands & Total Control | 23 Jun 2026 | 00:47:06 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
This is the second part of a two-part story with Erin.
We interviewed Erin about three years ago, and her story has remained on our minds ever since. So, we're bringing it back to you.
Erin was taken advantage of while she was suffering through a highly sensitive passage in her life. Her mother had just passed away.
Charlie presented himself as the right answer at the right time.
Like many victims, she was an innocent, generous person. The kind of target predators are looking to lure straight into problematic relationships. She became easy prey.
The warning signs of potential danger were there, but Erin didn’t interpret them. You will learn plenty from this powerful episode. You will see how difficult it is to break from an accomplished abuser. You need to hear Erin's story.
Charlie's control over Erin goes off the charts. His demands are ridiculous, but her generous nature forces her to comply with his every request.
Be sure you share this WHEN DATING HURTS episode with someone who's dating. Only through education can we help others to see what is plain sight.

| 349. Karan’s Story: A Therapist’s Experience with Domestic Abuse, Trauma & Resilience | 16 Jun 2026 | 01:00:48 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Karan told me she spent the past several months healing from a deeply harmful relational experience.
She understands how stories like hers bring both awareness and healing, and so she wanted to share with us.
What makes her story quite so unique?
She is a therapist, which gives her a unique dual perspective. As she states: "both understanding relational dynamics (clinically), and living through the reality of them (personally)."
The complications she had to solve will find many of us listening to her story more than a few times.
Karan's desire is to take such a painful experience and use it to help others feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered to trust themselves.
This was precisely what I was hoping she would do and she did this perfectly.
Keywords & Themes: Trauma bonding, divorce, overcoming domestic abuse, single parent family struggles, women’s empowerment, and resilience.

| 345. Julia - Pt 2 of 2 Pts. - Love Bombing to Gaslighting: A Canadian Survivor’s Toxic Ex-Husband Story | 09 Jun 2026 | 01:08:52 | |
Content Warning & Disclaimer
Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
This is part two, the final episode of a two-part story with Julia.
The power in this narrative comes from the fact that our survivor, Julia, is a smart person from a good family living in Canada. If she could be coercively controlled, anyone could.
She was raised to respect and be helpful to people, and she wanted to trust that everyone was basically good. It was a wonderful outlook on life until a guy named Damon came along.
Damon knew how to put on the mask of a thoughtful, generous guy. A guy who had been wronged several times before by women. His presence completely mesmerized Julia right from their first phone call.
As you are listening to this story, keep track of the warning signs that Julia either missed or ignored. There are many.
Besides a full display of deception, mirroring, pocketing, manipulation, cohesive, control, future faking, gaslighting, financial abuse, and more, we also hear about the ways he isolated her. There are plenty of lessons to be learned.
In listening to this story, we ask ourselves what is going on in Julia's mind. When will she feel she has experienced enough to say she was done with this abusive man?
Keep in mind, this is a survivor story. So, no matter how bad it gets, it is good to know she will eventually get out.
Keywords & Themes: Trauma bonding, overcoming domestic abuse, single parent family struggles, Louisiana true story, healing from childhood trauma, women’s empowerment memoir, resilience stories 2026.
