#332 - Chat GPT Has Questions. We Have Thoughts.06 Dec 202501:33:52

Ryan and Becca flipped the format on this episode and answered a set of thought-provoking questions generated by ChatGPT—sparking a really honest conversation about how our businesses have evolved, what we’re learning, and where we’re feeling challenged. We talk about shifts we’ve made this past year, goals that no longer serve us, experiments that surprised us, and the habits we wish more potters would adopt early on. We also reflect on how hosting the podcast has shaped our creative and business growth. It’s a candid, wide-ranging chat that pulls back the curtain on what’s really happening behind the scenes.

Ryan and Becca recap Ryan’s two-week “pottery vacation,” where he stepped away from his day job to experience what full-time pottery could feel like. They talk through the technical challenges he tackled, the shows he prepared for, and the sales strategies he experimented with. Ryan also reflects on managing his health, energy, and work-life balance during the break. They wrap up with how the experience shaped his outlook on future goals and how pottery fits alongside his career as a UX engineer.

What product or what system do you use to package and ship your pottery? I believe I heard Amy Brummond’s episode where both Amy and Ryan mentioned they used the ram pack system. I’ve been looking for a good packaging system and I was wondering where you purchased it. @kevinsceramics

#231 - Analyzing your best & worst Instagram Reels30 Dec 202302:24:34

Ryan & Becca try a different approach on today's episode to discuss some of their top performing (and worst) Instagram Reels over the past 6 months. We chat about what we think made them so successful, some takeaways to think about as we produce content for future reels, and why some just completely flopped. We hope this is a useful discussion as you think ahead to content creation and finding interesting snippets of the work we all do in clay.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I have a kiln question. I have 3 kilns (one currently working) but it has a manual sitter that I have to flick switches on. Can I, or rather how difficult (or expensive) would it be to switch it over to a digital. Is it even possible or worth it? For reference I have a Gare kiln (3.5cu ft I think) with a LT-3K sitter. @grit.an.grace
- My question is related to studio visits by potential clients. If/when and how to manage them, especially when it comes to time spent and energy spent on visits when you're in the middle of projects and aren't really in the mood to have visitors. I know that some ceramists do a 'open studio' once a year, and others don't do visits at all. Maybe you could talk a little about your thoughts about the importance or non-importance of having visitors in a home studio, which type of boundaries you think are important to set, and different possibilities of managing studio visits to the curious client.  @peakstonepottery

#228 - How do you handle negative feedback?09 Dec 202301:56:57

Ryan & Becca have some thoughts today about how to handle negative feedback, whether it's a customer, fellow business owner, business you partner with, or otherwise. Handling these situations can be pretty tricky and we hope you get some good insight from today's discussion. Thanks for listening!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
What's the best way to ship out 60 or more packages? Do you need to contact the post office? Do you just show up with a mischievous smile? Would scheduling a post office home pick-up thing (which I haven't ever actually done) possibly be better? @bluenosetrading
- I just finished a 3 day holiday show at a brewery (best sales to date🙌) and received an email from a customer that bought 2 of my carved winter mugs. She said when she unwrapped them the following day she saw one of them had chipped. She mentioned she was careful with her bag and knew I wrapped them up but asked if there was anyway I would replace the mug for her, and said she could maybe pay for shipping. - Have you come across this before and how did you handle it? - Does the type of item play a factor into your response? (These mugs sold out so I’d be making another for her specifically. -She spent $105 with me, before tax) - I’m reading this like she wants the replacement for free. Would you make a free replacement for the sake of keeping a positive customer experience/return orders? Vs customer having negative experience (even if based on false expectations) that could leave a bad review etc? @moonlight_mud

#226 - Kiln size matters25 Nov 202301:58:32

Ryan & Becca get deep into kilns on today's episode to give some insight into how you may choose your next kiln based on your studio production. They cover a range of kiln body sizes from the L&L & Skutt lines, as well as a few others along the way. Good luck if you're in the market for a kiln and let us know if you have any questions to help you make the decision a little easier. Enjoy!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
Do you use Etys ads? If so, how do you decide what listings are best to advertise, and how much money to put into ads? Thanks friends @bluenosetrading
- I would love to get a larger kiln when I expand my studio space next year and I’m totally sold on an L&L! But I don’t know which kiln to get. Can y’all do a segment (sponsored or not) on kiln sizes? I currently have a Skutt 822. Not sure I could get a much taller kiln because I’m short (5’2”) but really am outgrowing the kiln size. What’s a great next size up for potters who do “semi-production” work? @thepotterymason

#225 - What influences a buyer to purchase?18 Nov 202301:40:15

Ryan & Becca are back together this week to recap some of the points discussed last week on Becca's solo episode about her shows. To relate back to a more broad topic, Ryan get's into what he feels influences buyers to purchase from you at shows. Hopefully you were able to reflect on your booth set-up and interactions at shows to see where you're doing well and maybe some areas of improvement. Thanks for listening!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
As the holiday season is gearing up, I’ve been trying to figure out how to maximize my time/output in the studio so I can take advantage of the additional shopping/spending this time of year, especially because I know January-April will be the slow season.   Do you make any changes to your studio schedule/the way you allocate your time to make sure you’re making the most of the holiday season? For instance, would you take vacation time from your full time job so that you can increase production in the studio during these month? Also, do you change your focus once January hits? For instance, do you focus on reaching out to wholesalers, focus on online updates, etc since there are less in person markets? @marg.ceramics

#321 - Finding Themes in Your Work & Overcoming Creative Doubt20 Sep 202501:32:35

Ryan and Becca tackle a wide range of listener questions, from finding themes in your work to navigating self-doubt in the studio. They discuss building kilns big enough for oversized pots, the differences between the terms “potter” and “ceramicist,” and the pros and cons of front-loading vs. top-loading electric kilns. Along the way, they share insights about perfectionism, creative growth, and how to embrace the making process with more joy. Whether you’re troubleshooting technical challenges or reflecting on your creative identity, this conversation is packed with relatable stories and practical advice.

Maker of the Moment

Listener Questions
On this episode:

  • Do you see an overall theme with your work? @ceramics_bymargaret
  • I'm making some pots that are going to be way too big for my kiln. I was hoping for some ideas or resources that you could point me to. BJ Glick
  • What's the difference between a potter and a ceramicist? @badger_and_jo
  • What are some pros and cons of front loading vs top loading for electric kilns? @mwypottery
  • Lately I've been struggling with a persistent feeling of inadequacy. No matter what I create, it feels imperfect and I find myself constantly comparing my work to others, leading to significant self-doubt and a lack of satisfaction in my projects. I'm hoping you might be able to offer some guidance on overcoming this creative block. I'm particularly interested in hearing your thoughts on managing expectations, defining "good enough" for oneself, and fostering a healthier relationship with the creative process, where the joy of making takes precedence over the pressure of achieving perfection. @hollyshobbiescc

#222 - Building partnerships with companies28 Oct 202302:14:17

Ryan & Becca share some updates about their lively week together before getting to some listener questions and finally the topic for today: building partnerships with companies. There's no copy and paste message you can send out to the companies you'd like to partner with, but you can certainly be yourself and share how you'd make a great person to talk about their products. Best of luck if you're thinking about reaching out to some companies for collaborations.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- Hello, love the podcast and have been listening since the beginning! This is my first question on the show. SO, I was vending a show this past weekend and dealt with a very rude, disrespectful person which was unfortunately one of the other vendors. I've had unpleasant customers before but this was another level especially since it was a vendor. Since then I've been thinking about it and wish I had handled it differently... I was very passive/defensive but wish I went on the offense a bit more. So the question is how do you deal with a toxic person at an event? Thank you! @earthengoat

Ryan & Becca are together in-person today at Ryan's while they chat virtually with Milissa and Eric Beale from Beale Pottery in northwest Indiana. They chat about their recent grand opening celebration, managing the business as a husband & wife team,  balancing multiple styles of work, class/workshop offerings, financial risk of relying only on pottery income for the family, and plenty more. #220 - Are you feeling burned-out?14 Oct 202302:21:19

Ryan and Becca discuss a heavy topic today: burnout. What’s led to burnout for both Becca & Ryan, how are they feeling in the midst of it, & how do they cope with it? It’s a tough time of year for so many small business owners as the holidays approach, but we can get through this to feel good about the end of our year. Thanks for listening and best of luck to finish out 2023!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- I’m collaborating with a friend. She’s creating designs for screen printing on mugs as well as making the screens. I’m doing the clay work (form design, throwing, handles, etc) and glaze plan. How do we sort out the money aspect? 50/50? Is there a formula for this? Any experiences you can share that would help would be much appreciated? @blacktoothpottery
- How do you track your inventory on consignment at different locations. Are there systems you've found or seen others use that you love? Are there ones you'd avoid like the plague? I love how you can track and run reports in square on items sold in person and I'm struggling to find a way to track and run reports similarly for consignment sales. @glazedconfusedcreations

#219 - Pricing your work effectively with Heidi Fahrenbacher from Bella Joy Pottery07 Oct 202302:59:29

Ryan & Becca welcome back Heidi Fahrenbacher from Bella Joy Pottery while Becca is visiting her up in Michigan for the week. Listener Questions
On this episode:
- Hi Ryan and Becca, love the show, especially the banter at the beginning. You recently had a person on the show talking about the business side of stuff, which was great and got me thinking of other things I don’t normally think of, particularly insurance. I know you have discussed a little about ACT insurance for shows. Have you guys discussed studio insurance? I just recently reached out to car and apartment insurance agent. I’m trying to figure out coverage and is the amount worth spending per year. Any of your thoughts would be great. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!! @portzpottery

#216 - Maintaining a love for clay with Juliann Roush16 Sep 202301:45:12

Ryan & Becca are joined today by Juliann Roush while Becca is visiting her in the upper peninsula of Michigan. We discuss how she makes her very time-intensive functional work using various hand-building techniques. Her business and work has shifted a lot over the 30+ years she’s been playing with clay, but she still finds love in what she’s making. We also answer a couple listener questions with Juliann’s input. Join the three of us at Clay Con West in St. George, Utah January 12-14. See her process & finished work on various platforms and let her know we sent you!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I’m working on finding the right market for my work and it’s been pretty difficult. I primarily enjoy carving porcelain in a similar style to Elaine Coleman. I feel like my work is decent quality, but am struggling to find buyers. Do you have any advice for me? @thorpeceramics
- I’m wondering how you balance the need for new products versus having too many different things.  I attend a local farmers market monthly, so I try to have some staple items (mugs, spoon rests, gnomes, etc.),  while also having new things to draw people to my booth.  To be honest, new items are for my creative and skill practice benefit, too.  Just a late night throwing thought. Thanks for everything you guys produce and share with us.  @basking.turtle.designs

#212 - Live Q&A with Ashley from Bowled Over Ceramics19 Aug 202301:34:33

Ryan & Becca are joined by Ashley Ball to discuss an interesting proposal related to trying out a new show to her with potential versus sticking with a tried and true show she's done multiple times. We cover the situation from many different angles to give the best recommendation: financial potential, distance, length of show, interest level to be at the show, customer potential, expenses, etc. We also want to sincerely thank Ashley for her help managing our Wheel Talk Instagram account along with Lindy Garner over the past couple of years.

#210 - Live Q&A with Caroline from Revisionist Studio05 Aug 202300:59:41

Listener Questions
On this episode:
Do you have any recommendations for finding your people (ie customers) when your work isn't very traditional? I live in South Carolina, and my work is a little too weird for the galleries here, which are pretty traditional and conservative. #207 - Comparing clay conferences15 Jul 202301:50:20

Ryan & Becca answer a listener question they've gotten a couple times recently related to clay conferences. They share their experiences at NCECA and other regional clay conferences, especially Clay Con West. Consider researching other clay conferences in your area to get to know more of your local clay people, learn a few things, get outside of your comfort zone a bit, & explore a new city. We hope to see you at Clay Con West or NCECA in 2024!

Resources
NCECA - Richmond, VA (2024), Salt Lake City, UT (2025)
Clay Con West - Saint George, UT
Alabama Clay Conference - Orange Beach, AL (2024)
Indiana Clay Conference - Bloomington, IN (2023)
NC Potters Conference - Seagrove, NC
Canadian Clay Symposium - Burnaby, BC

What would you do if...
a customer asks you to make an urn and you have never made one before? What circumstances would you do it?

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I would be interested in hearing what all pottery conferences you have attended (or know of) and how they compare. I enjoy attending NCECA when I can but it can be a bit overwhelming and content is often more targeted to fine artists and instructors as opposed to studio/home potters. -Jeff Poteat @claypotzpottery
- I had a question for your podcast. I went to NCECA this year and it was awesome. I am thinking of going to clay con west next year. I will probably have to pick either NCECA or CCW. Which was your favorite and why? @threelickpottery

#206 - Subscription & mug clubs08 Jul 202302:21:22

Ryan & Becca dig into a listener question related to subscription clubs where you offer a new pot each quarter at one price, plus a tangent into mug clubs for breweries. We go into some incentives you may want to consider to get customers to purchase, how to make each quarter’s offering unique, and how to structure payment. Enjoy this new discussion topic for us!

What would you do if...
all the pots you shipped out for a restock broke?

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
Chocolate bar or candy bar? What do you say? @greencabinpottery
- Best bats for making plates. Not plastic. But just don’t want something that warps. @sarahcrowleyceramics
- Have y’all ever done a mug club or pot club? I’ve been thinking of trying one next year — a subscription model where members would receive a new pot once a quarter, and they’d be exclusive new work only for members. Problem is, idk how to sell it to people or logistically how to set it up. Pay all at once, or once a quarter when the pot ships? ($200 once or $50 four times) What would make customers even want to sign up? Thanks as always! Also I just left a long ass review for the pod because the snooze fest review really pissed me off! Y’all are the best! @thepotterymason

#205 - Live Q&A with Cindy from Green Cabin Pottery01 Jul 202301:51:17

Ryan & Becca are joined by Cindy Chiupka-Jozin from Green Cabin Pottery in Northern Ontario, Canada for another live Q&A segment. Today, we answer a question related to how much work you should take to a show, whether it's a local one day show or you're traveling for a multi-day show. We hope you enjoy and thanks to Cindy for joining us!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I was just wondering what you, Ryan and Becca, would say about what to take to a show. I have inventoried what I take and what I return with. Most times I sell close to 50%, but that’s local and easy to gave 2 vehicles to unload and reload.  The last local market, I sold about 30%. @greencabinpottery

#204 - Live Q&A with Lynne from Grit & Grace Pottery24 Jun 202301:33:30

Ryan & Becca try out their new live Q&A segment with Lynne Brander from Grit & Grace Pottery to talk about a new teaching opportunity in collaboration with a local small business. We think this discussion will give you some brainstorm ideas for teaching workshops on your own. Thanks to Lynne for joining us!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I have a question about teaching. I have an opportunity to do some classes at a local business offering some lessons. They are interested in offering paint your own mug/bowl/any item really, diy pinch pot, etc. How/ where do I start? I have enough knowledge to be able to show someone how to do the things, it's mostly the organization of it all. What kinds of things should I have prepared? How much should I charge? Etc. Thanks! @grit.an.grace

#203 - Chat GPT17 Jun 202302:18:31

Ryan & Becca dive into a very new topic for the time: Chat GPT. Let us know your thoughts about this new technology as it becomes more relevant these days.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
I would like to remain anonymous as I’m embarrassed having worked in ceramic for so long and know as little as I do. I’m a part-time ceramic artist that makes a lot of random shit, including mugs & tumblers for drinking. I heard an episode where someone said you HAVE TO HAVE INSURANCE incase your mug breaks and someone spilled hot coffee on themselves. (…or something like that.) Do you guys have insurance for this? I had looked into it as part of my home policy and it is $659 a year. As I only to make about $10,000 before expenses, I wonder if you would know of a lower cost option? -anonymous

#202 - "Am I robbing students of a teachable moment?"10 Jun 202301:22:22

Ryan & Becca answer a listener questions related to all you studio techs out there. Aletha, one of our long time listeners and interview guests (episode #147), has a question related to deciding when to make teachable moments when confronting glazing issues from students when you're in charge of loading & unloading the kilns as the studio tech. We cover it from a range of scenarios on today's discussion: student age, format of the class, type of studio, teacher communication, etc. Enjoy!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
So I am a hobbyist.  After 2-3 years of part-time slingin' clay, I am actually finding out that, hey, I can actually make money at this!  I have 2 stores that sell my things on consignment, and its starting to ramp up, especially with one shop begging for more. Ryan, you have talked before in the show about having a DBA, so my question is, is that something I should do also? Ryan Rehm, Little King Pottery
- I've been doing some kiln tech work (loading kilns and firing things for other people, mostly students. NOT teaching) and I'm really enjoying it. Sometimes there are some glaze issues like an obvious spot where it will touch the shelf that I just sponge off before loading. I can't catch everything with hundreds of pieces to fire and my heart sinks over the ones I miss, or the ones that act unpredictably, but here's the question - am I robbing someone of a teachable moment with the minor fixes? At what point do you just fix it and keep things moving, versus put it aside? @aleathabean

#201 - Garbage Talk with Tim Kowalczyk03 Jun 202302:56:46

Ryan and Becca are excited to have Tim Kowalczyk from Tims Ceramics on to cover a range of topics and answer a couple listener questions. We chat about selling through galleries, testing new processes, being "academic" with how you talk about your work, taking yourself a little less seriously, artist statements, & applying to shows. We hope you enjoy the discussion and big thanks to Tim for spending so much time with us.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- What do you think are the advantages of doing a curated show? Disadvantages? I’ve been invited to participate in a group show with some other Ceramic artists that I really admire. The show is a little over a month long at a gallery in Portland. After saying yes, I find out that they want 10 pieces, but really they only want 2 pieces to be shown at the gallery, the rest would be only virtual. Of course the gallery wants 50% of all of the 10 pieces. It would be still my responsibility to drop ship the pieces to the customer. I think the shipping fee will be added to the order so I don’t have to cough that up too. I already sell pretty much 100% of my work virtual on my own website. Although, I don’t always sell out on a shop update. Is doing this show or this type of show really going to give me that much more exposure to give up 50%? I’m in such a quandary! Oh and they want to see pictures of all 10 pieces 3 months before the show. @juliannroush
 - Have you talked about writing artist statements for submitting work to galleries? I had to do one recently and wasn’t sure how to approach it. (Also I am thinking Becca probably hates artist statements. 😂) @overbrookclay

#200 - Tradesies & artist collabs27 May 202301:56:26

Ryan shares a scary situation that happened to him recently before Ryan & Becca answer a few listener questions. On today's episode, the questions relate to trading with other artists, a sticky situation for a pottery teacher, and working with other artists on collaborations. Thanks for listening and enjoy!

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
How do you approach other artists about trades? Trading is talked about often and I’m curious. Not that I feel like I want to trade, I just think I’d be too embarrassed to ask if I ever did want to @thistlemoorpottery
- I’m a freelancer and I teach pottery for a few hours every week in a local studio in the city next to mine. I’m a contractor who works on commission basis per student with them . I also have an online business. The studio is asking me to sign a non compete that does not allow me to take up any opportunity that they think it’s competition to them (this is the exact wording) it also does not allow me to work with anyone else within 20 miles of the location for one year , basically they are restraining my employability. Is this even possible for studios to ask for non. Competes with their contractors ? Obviously I refused and waiting to hear their response. It will mostly be termination of contract . I live 10 miles away from the studio in another city and I’m a part of the city’s art group. I don’t want to miss out on opportunities that my city may bring into existence in future. @isanceramics
- First of all I want to tell you that I love your podcast and look forward to the weekly drops. I am going to collab with an artist who will paint on mugs or I’ll have a custom overglaze made with her designs. I have no idea how to compensate her and wondering if you have any advice. @pottery_by_brendalee

#198 - Should you offer free shipping?13 May 202302:03:34

Ryan & Becca compare the pros & cons of offering "free" shipping for your online shop. Becca prefers offering free shipping and Ryan prefers adding shipping charges at the end, making for an interesting debate. Let us know your thoughts and how you approach this question.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
-
When setting up your booth, is an outside L or inside L better for bringing people in? Does it matter? @thistlemoorpottery
- How do y'all feel about being put directly next to another potter at a mixed art show? I personally would prefer that there is some space between each medium, so people's minds are directly comparing artists work. -anonymous
- I’m struggling between free shipping (built into price), or additional shipping and handling fees. Which is preferable to buyers?? @kerripainterart

#197 - Adding new styles to your product line06 May 202302:12:10

Ryan & Becca discuss a question that came in related to finding a consistent style, but having interest in experimenting with new designs. We cover the potential drawbacks & positives to introducing new designs, how to avoid surprising your customers, and the timeline you could consider as you experiment. We've both changed up our styles over time, some more drastic than others, but it's ultimately good for the longevity of your enjoyment of the craft to keep yourself interested as you progress.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- Are you guys “sock, sock, shoe, shoe” or “sock, shoe, sock, shoe”? @kerripainterart
- Do you ever see someone’s social media pages be just so terrible even though their work is amazing? Do you ever reach out to offer advice even though they’re already trying so hard? -anonymous
- I wanted to know what both of your opinions are on sticking to a specific style while making your work. I have been working on refining my own style but still find myself branching out and playing with new designs. Some other makers I have chatted with told me that you may lose a customer base if you don’t stick to your specific designs, especially as you generate a larger following. I know that y’all previously discussed developing a style, but once you hone in a style do either of you feel “stuck” or that you may not get as many sales if you try something new? How do you balance making new work but also satisfying your current audience and their expectations of you? @nws_ceramics

#196 - All about fidget stones!!29 Apr 202301:56:27

Ryan & Becca answer a couple listener questions before getting into an in-depth discussion about pricing small items like Becca's fidget stones. Her fidget stones are a bit different because they require many hours of rock tumbling to smooth them, but doesn't require more effort for her necessarily. They also get into other factors that help you determine your price on an item and how to market them effectively.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- I am wondering what you guys what recommend for a portable wheel. I heard Becca talking about her on the clay con podcast, and I’m pretty sure I saw that Ryan has one as well? Would love y’all’s insight! Thanks for all you guys do to make this info accessible @upbeat.studios
- Curious to know how Becca’s fire box is working out for her now that it’s been a bit. Could a firebox be a good workaround solution for a potter who doesn’t have convenient access to a full-size kiln? Getting desperate and tired of driving 84 miles round trip to fire at a local store. #193 - Pricing with confidence08 Apr 202301:37:47

Ryan & Becca answer a couple listener questions specific to pricing your work depending on the medium you’re selling in & confidence in yourself. Topics include pricing to sell to a local restaurant or pricing at local shows. Your prices don’t have to be set in stone, so be open to changing them when you think it’s needed.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- Do you think the majority of Instagram popular potters fire oxidation rather than reduction? @seuzens
- How do you guys handle pricing for larger orders in comparison to wholesale? For example, an order for 30-50 mugs for a restaurant to use. It’s not wholesale, but that large of an order seems like it would warrant a discount from standard retail price. What do you guys do? @thepotterymason
- Ryan, I am a small ceramics maker. Have you covered "pricing" and working side by side with makers/ceramicists/etc (not necessarily all together)? I've just started and shown at holiday fairs, ceramic arts shows, makers fairs, and I've found the vendors can be very different and pricing can be so different. For instance, selling a mug at a holiday show at $25-40 might be the norm, and then a maker fair it might be $40-70, and then a ceramic art fair might be different. I ask because I showed recently and have had lower prices in the past $25-35 mugs and vendors didn't like that at all - a few even came up to complain to me. Obviously, there's a touch of imposter syndrome and I need to value my work at a higher rate. @bruce.leong

#191 - Pricing for your worth or your market25 Mar 202301:28:14

Ryan & Becca answer a couple listener questions today about specific business situations you may find yourself in at some point. One involves pricing your work based on your local market vs pricing higher based on what your time is worth now. The other involves a sticky situation where you may have doubts about a potential partnership with a local business who wants to carry your products.

Listener Questions
On this episode:
- My sister and I started a ceramic business about a year and a half ago. Love the podcast and know you talk a ton about pricing. More specifically, we want to put more work into pieces that we know our market (mostly local), can’t bear yet. Should we price them lower and hope they can, over time and popularity, they can increase in price? Or price them for what our time is worth now? We understand as a new business that we don’t have a strong following or reputation, and that we may have to “grind” for a while. Mia @the_justuscollective
- I was recently contacted by a local business that makes and sells loose teas, and they asked me to make about 10 mugs for them to sell on their website and at vendor markets. I love working with local small businesses, I love tea, and I’d love to do more small commissions for local businesses, so it seemed like a sure thing. But… my husband (who is in the food biz and knows about these things) is concerned that this tea biz is not properly licensed to sell a consumable product, and also makes some claims on their website about healing properties of their products. He thinks that I should not be affiliated with them, in case this becomes a legal issue for them. And it could also reflect poorly on him in his business. So here’s my question (sorry so long): What do you think? Have you ever said no to a commission because it was someone you thought could damage your business reputation? What would you do?  -Anonymous
