(Article By Jess Weatherbed) In the 1st of two Life segments: (52:39) The old adage "The pen is mightier than the sword" is always something that people don't really take in properly, so how can a pen be the best weapon? | Ep.338 - Orgreave Inquiry, Sudan & "Gen-Z Stare" | 23 Jul 2025 | 01:03:47
In a week where:
In Politics: (7:16) In a crazy irony, the Red Tories have launched an inquiry into gov't/police abuse during a time of protest 40 years ago... As they're literally doing something similar today! (Article By Albert Toth) In Society: (21:28) The mass displacement is Sudan has slowed for the first time in years. But what the people will find is a country unrecognisable where the old ways of life won't cut it. (Article By Tahany Maalla) In Sport: (37:17) Women's Football is getting more popular year on year, the growth is undeniable. One key aspect for it on all levels is creating an cultivating an inclusive & inviting culture, on and off the pitch. (Article By Gem Fletcher) Lastly, In Culture: (52:07) So apparently everyone is bitching about Gen-Z (1997-2012) and their so called "Gen-Z Stare"? I wanted to find out what was going on. I kind of regretted it. (Article By Alex Abad-Santos) Thank you for listening! | Ep.332 - Italian Citizenship, New Media & Fairer Fashion | 11 Jun 2025 | 01:07:14
In a week where:
In Journalism: (7:40) The BBC higher ups continue to shit the bed after minutes of a meeting shows that they're discussing plans to alter their news output to appease Reform voters... As if GBNews doesn't exist. (Article By Adam Bienkov) In Life: (21:25) Italy had Citizenship Referendums recently, potentially changing the boundaries on what makes one Italian. But for some, that day hasn't come even if they were born and raised there. (Article By Sarah Rainsford) In Culture: (36:06) Plugging your new Film or TV show used to be so easy: couple of interviews, press junkets, maybe a Late Night show appearance! But the landscape has changed and even doing all that and more can all be for little reward. (Article By Nicholas Quah) Lastly, In Society: (52:55) Fashion constantly goes under the radar when it comes to how we're killing our planet. But like with everything when it comes to the environment, there are ways to make it better. (Article By Daphne Chouliaraki Milner) Thank you for listening! | Ep.255 - Farage, Palantir & The Marvels | 30 Nov 2023 | 01:09:54
In a week where:
In Politics: (11:50) Farage has received £1.5m to appear on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! with Ant and Dec. After everything he has done, he gets the opportunity to humanise himself. In Health: (23:49) A big existential crisis the UK is having is the state of the NHS and with the recent £500M deal with former military/spyware company Palantir, I feel like the NHS as we know it is dead. In Life: (34:28) Even though Suella Braverman is out as Home Secretary, I felt the need to find a piece that explains the spiral of being homeless. What better than a first-hand account. Lastly, in Film: (48:50) The film nerds are back out of their holes to claim Marvel is dead after the poor showing of The Marvels. Whilst I don't care about the monetary wellbeing of a multi-million $ studio, I do care about filmmakers getting thrown under the bus. Burn the table. Thank you for listening! | Ep.254 - Cruise Ships & Killers Of The Flower Moon | 23 Nov 2023 | 01:04:26
In a week where:
In Environment: (5:35) I was never into the idea of cruise ships when I was younger for a myriad of reasons, but with increasing evidence that cruise ships are THE worst when it comes to the environment - including this story about them not using long-established power sources - it's clear they got to go. In Tech: (20:57) With Twitter getting worse by the day, it's beginning to show that there's a widening gap in the Social Media/News landscape. So what are the ramifications of a deteriorating news landscape? In Politics: (37:53) Of all the reasons to hate Politics these days, one huge reason is the lack of empathy and how it only comes into play when it suits politicians. Lastly, in Film: (49:12) I briefly talked about "Killers of the Flower Moon" a few episodes ago and the likes of Scorsese have since talked about the main issue with the film: A non-Osage, telling an Osage story. So am I being extra? Thank you for listening! | Ep.253 - "We Have The Language" W/ Tayah | 16 Nov 2023 | 01:10:29
It's a cold Saturday night and I just got out of watching the late Horace Ové's "Pressure" at the BFI South Bank. A while after, I began an interview inside the BFI South Bank that I've been trying to schedule for months. In an admittedly not-the-best place to do an audio interview, I talk to one of my favourite discoveries of the year in Tayah, an on-the-rise singer/songwriter who wears as many influences (in her music) as her sleeve can fit. We talk her beginnings, inspirations, her love for radio; her music; radicalisation and of course her Top 5. Thank you for listening! If you know me, you know I love substantive conversation. So when I was given the opportunity to read a book and talk to the author of said book, I jumped at the chance. I talk to Dr. Hajar Yazdiha, Professor of Sociology at University of Southern California and author of "The Struggle For The People's King: How Politics Transforms the Memory of the Civil Rights Movement". We talk her beginnings, radicalisation; the many levels of societal memory and how King gets distorted; and a Top 5 that she'll definitely want to change once she reads this. Thank you for listening! | Ep.251 - Polycrisis & Hasan Minhaj | 02 Nov 2023 | 01:16:35
In a week where:
In World: (7:09) Name an aspect of life and you can be given something terrible about that aspect. It evokes a term that'll probably begin to get used more: Polycrisis. In the 1st of two Society segments: (28:04) The term "Generation Gap" is a term that is used probably too often, but in a post-COVID world, it might be apt for how Gen Y & Z responds to the decisions of Gen X and prior generations. In the 2nd Society segment: (46:38) Something that is definitely changing among the youth is speech. The likes of Cockney & Queen's English have pretty much disappeared. In their place, a mixture of it all. Lastly, in Media: (56:31) The New Yorker article on Hasan Minhaj last month was a very revealing one on the face, leading to another existential discussion on storytelling in the Stand-up Comedy medium. But Hasan has responded, both sides have been heard and just shows how important the likes of Minhaj are in this climate. Thank you for listening! | Ep.250 - Modern Slavery & Reclaiming Stories | 26 Oct 2023 | 00:59:25
In a week where:
In the 1st of two Politics segments: The Home Office can never seem to do positive things. On top of everything Braverman spews and bad practices, it turns out they have been hiding evidence of modern slavery! In the 2nd Politics segment: I can understand AI being used to make lives easier, but to decide who gets benefits?! Lastly, a Long Read! For this one we head to ProPublica for "A Racist Harvard Scientist Commissioned Photos of Enslaved People. One Possible Descendant Wants to Reclaim Their Story" By Jennifer Berry Hawes. | Ep.248 - Short Films, Banksy & Gaza | 19 Oct 2023 | 01:08:34
In a week where:
In Film: (4:44) Short films are a very important part of any filmmaker's career. But the average film watcher rarely watches short films. Why is this? In Media: (21:26) I've covered the Streaming Wars and Streaming in general for a while now. But with the many many issues that come with Streaming and its model, is it starting to eat itself? In the 1st of two Life segments: (39:50) For YEARS I have pounded the drum that Banksy isn't just one person, but a network of people. But with a defamation suit on Banksy's head, we now know that I have been right all these years! Lastly, in the 2nd Life segment: (49:15) The oppression of Palestine continues as the Israeli state indiscriminately bomb everything Palestinian. But one side of this that needs to be highlighted is the West's role and their strengthened support of the State of Israel. Thank you for listening! | Ep.247 - 1.5 Degrees, Voice Actors & Children of Men | 12 Oct 2023 | 00:57:32
In a week where:
In Environment: (8:32) For years we have been told about the dreaded 1.5 degree increase that will further destabilise an already significantly destabilised climate. We breached 1.5 for days just recently. In Arts: (20:55) A big part of the now finished Writer's Strikes and ongoing Actor's strikes in the US are the use of AI. Whilst writers and actors are rightly concerned, Voice Actors maybe already losing ground in their profession. In the 1st of two Film segments: (30:55) The likes of the French New Wave and other UK/European film genres are always hailed and considered valuable. But what about Black Urban Cinema? An academic claims Black Urban Cinema is on the same level as the other lauded genres. Lastly, in the 2nd Film segment: (38:28) Alfonso Cuaron's "Children of Men" is 17 years old - and whilst 17 years is not a significant birthday - it's worth looking at the dystopian future UK in the film and compare it to where we are now. | Ep.246 - "War On Motorists" & Black British Voices Report | 05 Oct 2023 | 01:02:24
In a week where:
In the 1st of an All-Society episode: (8:07) Motorists, the poor motorists. They're under threat; a war is being waged upon them! Or maybe it's a myth that has existed for as long as cars have. In the next segment, (28:15) the result of over 10,000 Black British voices has culminated in the Black British Voices report, covering a myriad of topics and feelings about being Black in Britain. Adding onto the report and it's findings, (41:10) a specific element I personally wanted to focus on: A significant portion of young Black Britons seeking to migrate out of the UK. Lastly, (52:10) Kemi Badenoch went back in her gaslighting bag, saying that the UK is the best place to be Black! Well there we go guys! Racism completed! Thank you for listening! | Ep.331 - Death Of Google, Otaku & NBA Europe | 04 Jun 2025 | 01:13:29
In a week where: 1. Microplastics are found in bugs for the first time. In Politics: A question frequently asked among progressive-minded peoples is "why is The Left not getting up in the world?". And whilst we can throw many a reason, there are seven that require us to look in the mirror instead of point to the power of the ruling class. (Article By Neal Lawson) In Tech: Google has been scrambling to get even in the AI race. And like a snake eating its own tail, Google is bringing the Internet as a whole - as we have known it - to its knees scrambling to chase the likes of OpenAI & Perplexity. (Article By Adam Clark Estes) In Culture: A great angle to see how we've lost our way as a collective peoples is the increasingly heavy grinding down of the Grand Narrative to the point where everything we do individually is done at a granular level, turning us all into Otakus. (Article By Louis Elton) Lastly, In Sport: It has been an open secret for over a decade now that the NBA wanted to expand into Europe. Now - in cahoots with FIBA - a Euro-based NBA imprint is probably years away which will seismically change Basketball as a global game, for better or worse... | Ep.245 - Photojournalism & Cultural Appropriation | 28 Sep 2023 | 01:02:19
In a week where:
In Music - (6:14) With the recent comments of Rolling Store Founder Jann Wenner making waves - leading to him being dropped off the RRHOF - it must be asked what is even the point of the RRHOF now? In TV: (12:13) GB News somehow still exists even though every time I hear about them they're breaking Ofcom rules in one way or another. At this point, it's an unabashed misinformation machine. In Photography: (31:28) One aspect of Photography I love is Photojournalism, some of my heroes did photojournalism at some point in their careers. But the form is a rare one these days, which makes the small number of them highly important in this digital age. Lasty, in Culture: (44:55) The term "cultural appropriation" is one that has been sewn into cultural debate for years now. But is it a 'bogeyman' phrase? Don't we borrow from other cultures all the time? Thank you for listening! | Ep.244 - Online Safety Bill, Inconvenience & dream hampton | 21 Sep 2023 | 01:13:56
In a week where:
In Tech - (10:26) After a couple years of delay, the UK Government is getting the much talked about Online Safety Bill cracking after passing the bill this past Tuesday. In Environment - (17:40) We want to save the planet, right? Right. As long as it doesn't inconvenience us, of course. Which - depending on the person - varies wildly. So what are the levels? Lastly, A Long Read! (35:58) For this we head to The Atlantic for "Hip-Hop's Fiercest Critic" By Spencer Kornhaber. | Ep.243 - Comment Journalism, Suits & Ezra Collective | 14 Sep 2023 | 01:07:25
In a week where:
In Journalism: (11:14) It's been uncovered recently that the Daily Mail has approached writers of colour to be the face of negative ghost-written pieces about things like Notting Hill Carnival. So what is the point of Comment Journalism when publications even think to operate like this? In the 1st of two TV segments: (24:30) The final season of Top Boy dropped last week. If you want my thoughts on it and the show as a whole, tune into next week's DITD; for now, here's a great piece on how the locals of "Summerhouse" lived as Top Boy was filming. In the 2nd TV segment: (34:26) Suits has been popping off recently with viewership skyrocketing. As a long-time Suits fan, it makes me happy that the show is blowing up, but why exactly is Suits popping off now of all times? Lastly, in Music: (56:32) In it's 31 year history, the Mercury Prize was finally awarded to a Jazz act. And in the days since, it's been wonderful watching Ezra Collective and UK Jazz as a whole finally get their respect. Thank you for listening! | Ep.242 - Doomerism, Optimism & Subway Surfing | 07 Sep 2023 | 01:01:34
In a week where:
In Environment: (4:34) I've tried to at least now and again talk about something environment/climate related; it's not lost on me that I can be a tad pessimistic about it all. And whilst it's not great to be all gloom/doom, is it worse to be optimistic? In Society: (16:13) Speaking of pessimism... Britain! Everyday there's a news item that will make me sad, turns out it's not just me. Are we collectively getting more depressed? In Film: (34:51) The "Golden Age" of Hollywood is such a fascinating time, even the designation interests me. Because whilst the moniker is for the films that came out, it's ironic considering the amount of turmoil that happened during the era, such as something known as the "Paramount Decrees". Lastly, in Life: (51:50) Something I've always liked the concept of but would never in my life actually do is Subway Surfing. It can come off as a relic of 80s Graffiti culture, but there's people that still do it! Even though people continue to die doing it. Thank you for listening! | Ep.241 - "Everything Is Black Culture" W/ Tee Max | 31 Aug 2023 | 01:28:53
Last week, I hit up a couple of exhibitions in London. One of which was "The Ascension Years" in the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton which highlighted the work of Photographer Tee Max. The exhibition covers his Hip-Hop work right on the precipice of Hip-Hop's 2nd boom in the mid 90s and features the likes of Nas, OutKast, Busta Rhymes, Da Brat, Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé and more. After a riveting conversation with him during my visit to the exhibition, I said "I need you on my Pod!" and here we are. I talk to Tee Max about his beginnings, how women's magazines ignited his interest in photography; the challenges of Film Photography; his experiences as a Black & British photographer in the 90s; why he took a decade-plus long break from Photography and, of course, his Top 5. | Ep.240 - Temu, Tortured Artists & Dwyane Wade | 17 Aug 2023 | 01:00:16
In a week where:
In The Internet: (7:04) It seems that every year there's a new shopping site that gives you the most random shit at cheap prices. This year it's Temu and as it turns out, you can cop knives on there. Seems legit! In Music: (23:20) There was nothing more jarring this year - especially as a Hip-Hop fan - to watch Ice Cube taking Tucker Carlson around LA. Whilst that's a wild example, Hip-Hop people aligning with the right is definitely a trend. In The Arts: (35:14) We all have that creative person that portrays themselves as 'tortured'. Some instinctively believe that you need to go through shit to be a good artist! So are we romanticising the "tortured artist"? Lastly, in Sports: (49:21) My favourite basketball player and the player that made me fall in love with ball - Dwyane Wade - was inducted into the Basketball HOF over the weekend. | Ep.239 - Hip-Hop Is 50 Years Old | 10 Aug 2023 | 00:59:44
In a week where:
In Media: (6:02) The recent death of artist & activist Sinead O'Connor prompted every publication that spent decades on demonising her to instead gass her up upon her death, which sets a platform to talk about how the press abuses women. In the first of three Hip-Hop segments: (18:24) Tory Lanez is going to jail for 10 years for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Which means there's a whole lot of "leaders" that need to vocally apologise to Meg. In the 2nd Hip-Hop segment: (34:02) The term "Knowledge of Self" is one that Hip-Hop as a whole has embraced, which begs detailing how it went from an Islamic pillar to Hip-Hop slogan. In November 2016, I conducted my first interview for The 5th Element. The people I talked to are the people I talk to for this personally special episode. Brothers JFlames & ASON had me in person - at their home - to chop it up after nearly seven years. We don't get too much into what has happened for them since then, but instead we get into a wide-ranging conversation about artistry, where Hip-Hop is and their differences as creative beings. What's more crazy is the conversations we had off-wax were also super worthy of being on here but we ended up with a solid hour. We of course get into their Top 5's which book ends things very succinctly. Thank you for listening! | Ep.236 - Actor's Strikes & Bruce Lee | 20 Jul 2023 | 00:50:49
In a week where:
In the 1st of two Film segments: (4:38) SAG-AFTRA have joined the WGA in the US, making this the 1st time actors & writers have both suspended work at the same time since 1960. But unlike that one which only lasted six weeks, this one is going for the long haul. In Social Media: (16:16) With the frequent talks of new Twitter clones, I've increasingly stopped caring about Social Media in general. One part of the dialogue is asking whether Social Media is even social? In the 2nd Film segment: (27:47) It has been 50 years since the death of Bruce Lee, who is still a cultural touchstone in many aspects. Some of these aspects are clear, but other aspects are a little more hidden. Lastly, in Society: (40:08) We love a community W and the one that the people of Brixton just got is an outstanding W, beating a large development firm to stop a new build. Thank you for listening! | Ep.235 - Personal Brand Paradox & Tori Bowie | 13 Jul 2023 | 01:00:16
In a week where:
In Society: (9:28) Is everything a brand? Is this Podcast a "brand"? The argument could be made that we're all stuck in a personal brand paradox. In Music: (24:50) If you want to know about a society in a particular country, you look at what their Hip-Hop community is saying. Take - for example - Egypt and their Hip-Hop a decade after the military coup went down. In Film: (36:36) I saw a film called "Return To Seoul" a couple of months ago and it's been in my head since. So I found a piece talking about it. Lastly, in Life: (46:20) After the death of US sprinter Tori Bowie and the subsequent revelation that her death was due to childbirth complications, Friend of 5E and former Relay teammate of Bowie's, Tianna Madison pens a piece about the Black maternal health crisis. In a week where:
In Film: (6:46) "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has been out for over a month now, but it's still on the mind of many and rightly so because there's so much to love about it. In Music: (16:56) As of this week, a Hip-Hop album hasn't hit No.1 in the US Billboard 200 by the month of June, the first time that has happened since 1998. But does it even matter? In the 1st of two Society segments: (29:12) Last week had a plethora of Windrush Day celebrations and I wanted to do my bit in taking note of that, albeit a week later. The 1st of two highlights the Windrush Generation's efforts in Civil Rights. Lastly, in the 2nd Society segment: (45:19) The 2nd Windrush related piece - and more specific - how they were essential in laying the foundation for the transport system we have today. | Ep.232 - UBI/UBS & UK Freestyle Videos | 15 Jun 2023 | 00:56:27
In a week where:
In Environment: (5:26) A couple of episodes ago I talked about how recycling plastics aren't cutting it, so I thought I would update with a piece that answers pretty simply what to do with plastics. In Politics: (19:40) Boris Johnson has stepped down as MP, which is another opportunity to smoke that Boris pacc and look at just how much damage he has caused in the past few years. In Society: (31:04) Last week, news broke of a trial for 30 people in England to get a UBI. (Universal Basic Income) With the two-year trial underway, the early question is "should we have a full-on UBI?". Lastly, in Music: (41:51) For decades now, a sure-fire way to get your name out there as a rapper is to get a camera, record some heat and let the internet decide and with multiple creators big and small putting artists on, it's a perfect place for discovery. | Ep.231 - Podcasting @ 20 & Windrush 75 | 08 Jun 2023 | 01:08:26
In a week where:
In Tech: (5:24) I've recently gotten into alternative applications that do one random thing. But one can quickly snowball into many. So do we really need all these apps? In Media: (25:11) This year marks 20 years of Podcasting being a thing. I've personally been into it for over a decade and adding to the deluge for nearly half that. So how did Podcasting get here? In Life: (40:22) I constantly think about the past in some fashion, whether it be general history or personal history. And as I get older, I wonder how many memories get lost in the sands of time and if it's possible to gain memories back. Lastly, in Society: (51:41) This year marks 75 years since HMT Empire Windrush came to Britain and began the journey of the Windrush Generation. So it's time for another recognition of the event and the people (including me) that continue the story. Thank you for listening! | Ep.230 - Recycling, Bad Poetry & Chronotypes | 01 Jun 2023 | 01:01:45
In a week where:
In Environment: (8:11) Every day I throw something into the pink recycling bag or some form of recycling bin, thinking that the more that goes into that pink bag, the better. But as it turns out, recycling plastic is doing more harm than we realise. In the 1st of two Art segments: (19:18) The disparities between men and women in many forms of art are very easy to see, and the disparities get worse when women are asked to dim down their work. In the 2nd Art segment: (32:39) Poetry, maybe the most accessible art form. Anyone can create poetry. But with low bars, come low-quality and BOY are there some crap poetry out there these days. Lastly, in Life: (45:17) "Why are you up so late?" is a question I'm asked a lot. I sleep through mornings and work into the night. | Ep.229 - National Conservatism & Fake Features | 25 May 2023 | 01:06:32
In a week where:
In the 1st of two Politics segments: (8:11) The National Conservatism Conference has been and gone, providing a bevvy of right-wing nutjob speeches. But whilst it may have been funny and/or inconsequential in previous years, it feels much more sinister now. In the 2nd Politics segment: (20:34) I would LOVE to take Nigel Farage's admission that "The Exit" failed and smoke a pack in honour of it. But whilst even the likes of Farage can finally admit it... We're still in it. In Music: (34:32) I've talked about AI in music recently with the recent event of Timbaland showing his ass. But AI in music is and has been a thing. So what do we do about the concept of "Fake Features". Lastly, in Society: (48:43) TikToker who goes by the name of Mizzy has been clout chasing on an absurd scale, in the name of "pranks". He's not the first, won't be the last. But with him speaking out about it all, the whole story sends me down a thought-abyss. Thank you for listening! In a week where:
In Society: (8:53) In 2019 I talked about Live Facial Recognition being trialled in select towns/cities. Now we're at a place where the police are using it freely and will soon become commonplace. (Article By Daniel Boffey & Mark Wilding) In Politics: (23:29) Let's learn about Centrism and how it could be posited that it's the worst political ideology. (Article By Johnny Silvercloud) In Film: (38:26) My knowledge of African film is very surface level, so I thought I would learn about a significant period in African film: The 80s. (Article By Tambay A. Obenson) Lastly, In Photography: (54:12) Legendary Photographer Sebastião Salgado died 81 in the past week, which brought me to read a piece on him from when he turned 80, contextualising his decades-long legacy as one of the world's premier Photojournalists. In a week where:
In Society: (8:04) During the Coronation weekend, there was a unprecedented amount of arrests made that wouldn't have been lawful even a fortnight before the Coronation. But now, with new laws, the police are clamping down on essential protests. In Music: (20:40) The Brixton Academy is one of the most iconic music venues in the UK. Name an artist and they have most likely played there. But the Met Police (quelle surprise) are pushing for the venue to be shut down forever. Lastly, a Long Read! (31:48) For this one we spin Alex Murrell's "The Age of Average" where Murrell, using several sectors and anecdotes, critiques how everything is, kinda the same now? Thank you for listening! | Ep.227 - Timbaland, Writers Strike & Tiredness Of Life | 11 May 2023 | 01:00:46
In a week where:
In Politics: (7:10) Depending on who you are, the Coronation that went down this past weekend was either a nice event full of pageantry, parties & entertainment... Or it was a flashpoint in the many ills of Britain today, including a concentrated assault on free speech. In Music: (23:53) Just when the conversation about AI in Hip-Hop was just beginning, there goes Timbaland immediately showing his ass, gassing up a track he made with AI vocals of The Notorious B.I.G. Nightmare fuel already being spilt and we're just getting started. In Film/TV: (31:42) The Writers Strike in the US is in full swing. Nobody knows how long it'll go but numbers are already showing that it'll cost Hollywood $2 Billion with it set to rise the longer it goes. Lastly, in Life: (49:00) There's never been an segment that deserves to be filed under "life" like this one, because we're talking about general tiredness about life which is apparently a phenomenon the entire western world is facing. | Ep.226 - Female Music Producers & "Dear Mama" | 04 May 2023 | 01:00:47
In a week where:
In Politics: (9:32) As if we needed any more confirmation that we're being led by a demonic Tory Party, Rishi Sunak decided it was a good time to dap up the freshest face in fascism, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni. In Tech: (23:14) As if we needed any more confirmation that AI is growing a little too fast, the man labelled "Godfather of AI" decided to quit Google and fire off warning shots about the future of AI. In Music: (34:00) Something that is constantly on my mind is the lack of female music producers. The share is reportedly a dismal 5%. So why is there such an extreme lack of female representation in the music production space? Lastly, in TV: (45:55) The life of Tupac Shakur has been told ad nauseaum, even people that don't listen to him know who he is. But one wrinkle of his life that hasn't been covered (as much) is his relationship with his mother Afeni. A new doc hopes to add another wrinkle to the book of Pac. Thank you for listening! In a week where:
In Politics: (7:40) Ever since Thatcher came into government, every subsequent government - even the Labour ones - have taken from her foundations. It's frankly depressing that we constantly accept it. In Film: (24:00) Raven Row has a new exhibition going down until June and if you're like me and know close to nothing about Pan-African cinema, then June Givanni's 10,000 piece archive will be a great start. And lastly, a Long Read! (36:17) For this one, we head to the Financial Times for "After hours with 10 Foot, London's most notorious graffiti writer" by Miles Ellingham. In a week where:
In the 1st of an all Music episode: (6:24) "Hip-Hop Media" is a term that brings up more negatives than positives for me, particularly because of who the notable people are within it. So how did it get so bad? In the 2nd Music segment: (20:24) Something that people always forget is that art reflects society, so when something like Drill comes into prominence, it should beg the question "why are young people talking about these things?" Lastly, a (monster) Long Read! (33:07) For this one we head to KQED for "How Bay Area Hip-Hop Found Its Sound in the 1980s" by Mosi Reeves. In Music: (26:14) One of my favourite albums of the year so far is "Harpista" Brandee Younger's "Brand New Life". And just when I thought the album was great, Brandee Younger herself dropped a little history lesson to make it even more great. Lastly, A Long Read! In a week where:
In TV: A friend asked me to watch Donald Glover's new show "Swarm". Whilst it's certainly something to evoke an opinion, I can't quite shake off and it's Glover's creative relationship with Black women. In the 1st of two Society segments: Dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson has commented on Britain's ills for decades and with the recent reckoning of the Met Police and British policing as a whole, LKJ is keeping the pressure on. In the 2nd Society segment: It's time for yet another moral panic! This time, it's the government's crackdown on Nos. But don't get it twisted, this isn't merely about curbing Anti-Social Behaviour, it's something bigger. In a week where:
In Politics: (13:09) Boris Johnson is in the news again because we can't just have him go away. So since he wants attention, let's talk about how he got £5M 6 months after leaving office. In Tech: (25:16) With "The West" going on an all out offensive to ban TikTok, it's splitting the Internet as a whole, as if it wasn't already. In the first of two Life segments: (35:07) Creative people swear by a lot of things that help them when it comes to their creativity - like drugs - but apparently none of it makes you more creative. Lastly, in the 2nd Life segment: (48:55) Finding purpose in life is maybe the biggest task for anyone. To have that thing that you're built for. In a week where:
In Politics: (10:00) With #GaryGate taking over the news, it's important to focus on the matter at hand which is this demonic immigration bill. And whilst Gary was wrong about comparing it to 30s Germany, it does compare to an old British Act. In Education: (24:05) Speaking of Tories, another moral panic they're acting on is sex education, which isn't a surprise but a concern nonetheless. In Film: (37:02) Awards SZN has ended with a bang for everyone involved in "Everything Everywhere All At Once", including Best Actress Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh whose role in the film delivers so much depth, including motherhood. In the first of two Politics segments: (8:52) My first of two articles where I spend half the show shitting on Kier Starmer and his grim capitulation to far-right ideals, starting with a more overall look at the near 12 months of his premiership (Article By Peter Oborne) In the 2nd Politics segment: (23:35) A more focused look at the recent Immigration policy the Red Tories are looking to implement. (Article By Alexandra Hall Hall) In Music: (40:09) Ever since I started hitting music shows nearly a decade ago, I have always valued smaller, more intimate shows over the large-scale arena show. Now, even Americans are seeing the deadness that arena/stadium shows bring. (Article By Kyndall Cunningham) Lastly, In Film: (55:37) A new instalment of Final Destination has dropped, evoking fun memories of my favourite Horror franchise and how it feels more like an accidental comedy with its sheer creativity of killing characters. | Ep.218 - The Romcom Effect & Trugoy The Dove | 09 Mar 2023 | 01:02:29
In a week where:
In Politics: (9:20) The new immigration bill being argued within Parliament has - to say the least - ruffled feathers... Potentially breaking international law, kind of feathers. In TV: (24:25) With the recent success of Chris Rock's live stand up special, it's entirely understandable if Netflix looked more into live broadcasting, which would pose yet another threat to competitors. In Film: (34:26) New Romcom "Rye Lane" is described as a "love letter to South London". And whilst I personally respect romanticising places that deserve it, we must be aware of "The Romcom Effect" and how gentrification can be literally birthed by films like this. Lastly, in Music: (52:29) The Hip-Hop world had the most bittersweet of blessings as De La Soul get their masters back, enter DSPs for the first time, all under the recent news of Trugoy's death. In a week where:
In Media: (12:20) Awards culture is rife in nearly all walks of life. But when you think about it, it's a lot of effort and money to give an award to adults. Are they really worth it? In Music: (27:59) In Hip-Hop culture, the sample diggers are the obsessive minority that spend their days trying to discern samples. But now that they have AI on their side; it's never been so good for a sample digger. In the first of two Life segments: (38:00) Within Black British culture, the dominant sect were the Caribbean contingent, but now that the raw numbers show that Afro-Brits make up more of the wider population, is it time to shift the culture to more of an African slant? Is it already happening? Lastly: (49:17) The Cockney accent - birthed in East London - is one of the biggest cultural exports we have ever produced. In a week where:
In Books: (7:28) This past week saw a fresh moral panic over fresh edits to the works of Roald Dahl. And whilst I'm usually against editing works that don't involve the author, apparently the practice is normal for children's literature. In the 1st of two Media segments: (21:48) I've kept the years-long saga of Shamima Begum at arms length due to the majority of coverage for it to be trash. A good example is the new BBC doc about her and how the media still ignore certain nuances. In the 2nd Media segment: (38:13) One word/term/'occupation' I can't stand is "Influencers". I personally find it a net negative, but regardless of my hate for the term. Influencers might be here to stay as methods of new-age advertising. Lastly, in Life: (52:34) The world average for life expectancy is 72.6 years and going higher. There's more instances of centenaries by the decade. Can you imagine the life lessons packed in 100 years? Look no further. Thank you for listening!
