Diving into the Uncomfortable - Minerva Navasca | EP 9810 Oct 202400:49:44

Send us a text

Minerva Navasca’s Bio:

Minerva Navasca is a Filipina-Canadian filmmaker exploring narratives of cultural dysphoria and girlhood with intimate specificity. Stating, “I want to make films about subjects that make me uncomfortable,” Minerva delves into perspectives steeped in anxiety and internalized shame, using the medium to interrogate the socio-political roots of these beliefs.  She is a 2022 & 2024 TIFF Next Wave Alumni, and the winner of the 2024 BFI Future Film Festival Best Documentary Award. She collaborated with NBC Universal and Canada Walk of Fame as part of the Future Storytellers Program.

A conversation with Minerva @minervanavasca, a conversation about being Filipino-Canadian, being a female POC filmmaker and the filmmaking industry, and creating film and art that explores and digs into one’s experiences that are often uncomfortable and hard to process.

Asian Diaspora and Belonging | JF Lee | #9026 Jun 202301:01:11

Send us a text

Conversation with Wuxia author, JF Lee

A conversation on growing up as an Asian Diaspora (Singaporean Chinese Canadian) in Vancouver, Canada, studying in the States, being an accountant, living in the Cayman Islands, becoming a Wuxia author, and an introduction to the Wuxia genre along with recommendations.

What is Wuxia?
Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction that features itinerant warriors of extreme (almost supernatural) martial arts skill in ancient China. These aren’t your average heroes. We’re talking people that can fly through the trees, cross vast distances in a single leap, reverse the flow of blood in the body with internal qi, and other amazing, superhuman feats. They travel around righting wrongs, helping people, and being good guys.

3.2-ASIAN MEN TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND THEIR FEELINGS FT. ROBIN (@CONROC)29 Oct 202000:48:09

Send us a text

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 2

Another episode with my good friend Robin (@conroc) where we continued to have deep talks. We talked a lot about mental health, seeking out therapy/professional health to help with figuring out what to do when feeling lost and not having direction in life during our adulthood. This podcast episode was all about feelings and talking about feelings which men in general are pretty bad at doing, so it was nice Robin and I were able to talk about our feelings to each so freely. We also talked about growing up in and Asian family in the west and about being old and how we still got to get out of our comfort zone in order to grow and improve. It was a great conversation, so don't miss out and listen to it!

We went pretty deep again so make sure to listen to the whole episode. And if you want to follow Robin, check him out on Instagram at @conroc. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, you can at @kyle.lkhhk.

Again thank you so much for listening and supporting the podcast. I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy this episode and make sure to share with your people if you find this entertaining and valuable. Now here is WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3.1 FEATURING ROBIN.

3.1-STAND YOUR GROUND AND TALK YOUR SHIT! FT. ROBIN (@CONROC)25 Oct 202000:43:33

Send us a text

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 1.

I am back with another episode and this is going to be a very very special one. I have my good friend Robin on the podcast this episode to just shoot the shit with me. It was such a good time that we recorded over 3 hours of podcast material. That’s crazy when I usually just record 1 hour at most with my guests. So this is why our recording will be split into 2 parts. And this is part 1 of my conversation with Robin. To give you a brief intro of Robin, he’s a good friend of mine that I came to know from Jack from DIU Podcast. Robin is an all around creative guy that does so much creative stuff. He likes to Bboy, rap, make music, podcast, design, and pretty much anything that allows him to be creative. He is someone all about the feel good vibes and doing dope shit. In part 1 of our conversation we talk a lot about, social media and the good and the bad of it, how we need to not look at everything just on the surface level and be sure to ask questions, being confrontational and standing your ground when white people mess with you, Robin’s childhood where Asians were not cool and what got him into Hip Pop with MC Jin being his inspiration, freestyle battling people at school and how Filipinos are just so trendy all the time.

We went pretty deep and we still have so much to cover in part 2 of our conversation so make sure to stay tuned for that when it drops.

1.2-ASIAN REPRSENTATION - WHO SHOULD TELL THE ASIAN STORIES? FT. DIU PODCAST12 Oct 202000:32:34

Send us a text

ep 1.2

{We want our kids to watch tv and be like, that Asian actor in there is very normal. It's normalize, it's not like "omg dad, there's an Asian guy!"} - Jack

In part 2 of my conversation with Jack and Gavin of DIU Podcast, we talked about a topic that we talk often about amongst ourselves which is Asian representation in the media.

We talked about how Asian representation in the media was like, how Asian representation in media is right now, and what we hope Asian representation in media would be like in the future.

We also talked about who is able to tell Asian specific stories and if it even matters who tells it as long as they are good. To end the episode, we recommended some good Asian representation media to check out and also talked about a famous Diaspora Asian.

Listen and find out who we talked about.

Capturing Family Stories w/ Root & Seed | Anika Chabra & Jennifer Siripong Mandel | #8829 May 202300:59:53

Send us a text

To finish Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Month/Asian Heritage Month strong, we talked with Anika Chabra & Jennifer Siripong Mandel of Root & Seed.

Root & Seed is a podcast that explores culture and family heritage. Hosted by Anika Chabra, host Kyle appeared on an episode talking about his story being Asian diaspora and using the podcast to document Asian diaspora stories. That was how we became aware of Root & Seed and all they do. Check out the episode!

In addition to the podcast, Root & Seed also produces a conversation tool (digital and physical) to make capturing family stories easier. The overall mission of Root & Seed is to bring together fellow tradition-seekers to claim, honor, document and celebrate their culture and let it live on in their words, thoughts, actions and experiences for generations to come. They have a great mission and this is why we needed to have a conversation with the founders, Anika and Jennifer about it.

Our conversation was about who they are, their Asian diaspora upbringing, how they met and started Root & Seed, their podcast, their conversation tool, and the reasons why they are doing what they are doing now.

If you enjoyed our conversation, please go follow them on social media, support them and their conversation tool (get yourself one), listen to their podcast and introduce them to friends and family.

Funny Cantonese Memes and Tiktoks - Paji & Iasmin (The Outcasts Podcast) | #8416 Apr 202300:59:27

Send us a text

Conversation with Paji & Iasmin, super popular Tik Tokers and podcasters.

Paji & Iasmin are Third Culture Kids from Macau now based in the US. They are Cantonese-English bilinguals with Paji being Sri Lankan+Filipino and Isamin being Brazillian+Filipino (not what you expected right?). They got a super entertaining podcast, "Outcasts the Podcast" that documents their hilarious journey as 2 half-Filipinos in America all while speaking some Cantonese. In addition to that, they are also on Tik Tok with funny videos and memes showcasing Cantonese culture and the language while teaching you important Cantonese phrases without you realizing it.

In our conversation, we went into their background, growing up in Macau as outcasts as they aren't Han Chinese (the majority population of Macau), their third culture identity, being outcasts in America, their relationship with Cantonese (language and culture) and their content-creating journey creating content about their experience being third culture kids and sharing Cantonese culture and language through funny tik toks and memes.

The Importance of Lived Experience for Creativity - HON HOANG / #8310 Apr 202300:58:21

Send us a text

Guest Bio:
Hon Hoang is a Vietnamese-American photographer and filmmaker currently based in Los Angeles, California. He was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, but grew up in Los Angeles. He began studying Photography shortly after graduating from UCLA where he studied Psychology. He sees Photography as a medium that answers questions, satisfies curiosity, and showcases the things that are often left unseen.

Hon believes that most of us feel a level of existential uncertainty, wondering who we’ll be because of who we were. His works explore this sensation and eventually come to hopeful conclusions, acting as a sliver of light that guides us out of the darkness.

Episode:
In our conversation, we talked about growing up in Roland Heights, living/abroad in South Korea, transitioning and figuring out what one truly wants to do, filmmaking and creativity.

Hon got a lot of thoughts and opinions on creativity, passion, filmmaking and art that are definitely worth considering and thinking about.

-His favourite foods and his relationship with food
-His journey on reconnecting with his Cantonese heritage through cooking and learning Cantonese and Chinese.

Karon Liu Biography: Karon is a Hong Kong Chinese Canadian that immigrated with his family to the Greater Toronto Area when he was 1 in the last 1980s. What Does Being "Chinese" Mean in the Diaspora? + Asian Joy | Aydin Quach | #96 #aapiheritagemonth23 May 202400:49:45

Send us a text

Today's episode features Aydin Quach(he/they).
MA student in History @UBC and Ph.D. in American Studies and Ethnicity @USC

We talked about:

1. What does being "CHINESE" mean in the Diaspora?
2. Aydin's upbringing as a Chinese Canadian growing up/living in Vancouver, Canada
3. Harmonizing Chinese/Asian identity with Queerness
4. Asian Joy and our right as immigrants/descendants of immigrants to have that without guilt

His Bio

I was raised in what is now known as Vancouver on the traditional, ancestral, and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, səlilwətaɬ, and Skwxwú7mesh First Nations. I am an uninvited settler on their land. I come from a family of immigrants to Canada who themselves were immigrants to Southeast Asia, having lived in Southeast Asia for generations. My mother’s family is part of the Stateless Chinese population in Brunei Darussalam and my father is Chinese-Vietnamese from Vietnam.   Drawing from my own identity as part of the Sinophone diaspora, I became interested in understanding how those who have complex migration histories understand their own identity. This is how I first got into the discipline of History and considered it as a prism through which I could develop and magnify my research questions. Questions around what is “Chinese” across the Sinophone diaspora are of particular interest to me.  This extends of course as well to other intersections of my identity as well such as my position as a Queer Asian individual in academia.

Research Areas

- Sex, Gender, the Body, and Sexuality
- Modern East and Southeast Asian History
- Migration Studies
-Queer Theory
- Sensory Studies
- Musicology
- Music History
- Cultural Studies
My research primarily pertains to the research of culture, sex, gender, and sexuality both in a historical lens as well as a contemporary sense. I am interested in how culture develops and how culture shapes our perceptions of self. I bounce back and forth in my research between the historical past and the present as part of an ongoing effort to research how identity and culture are intertwined. Below you will find a briefing about my current projects.

CURRENT PROJECTS

  • Hardening Men: Masculinity, Nationalism, and Leadership in Post Colonial Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia)
    • I am interested in how manhood and masculinity are constructed through military service. Moreover, how is masculinity co-opted into being an issue of national security for newly created countries in Southeast Asia?

HUGMATCH (INTERACTIVE TOYS FOR KIDS) - GABRIEL LEE (BONUS EP)27 Dec 202201:06:01

Send us a text

~ENDING 2022 WITH A BONUS EPISODE FEATURING GABRIEL LEE OF HUGMATCH~

This episode features Gabriel Lee (Korean American), head of Public Relations of HugMatch, a company that focuses on developing interactive toys for the visually impaired. Gabriel was recommended by a past guest of the show, XinYi as she had Gabriel on her podcast recently and thought that Gabriel would be a perfect fit for the show. After our recording, we couldn't agree more!

In our conversation, we explored Gabriel's family journey to the west, how the family didn't intend to actually move to the West permanently at first, to him taking a journey through different occupations and studies (working at the UN,  being in the military, studying his master, teaching English in Korea) that led him to where he is now, a man with a strong distant voice, mission and purpose that he commit to in the company that he is a part of with HugMatch. We definitely talked about HugMatch, the inspiration behind it, what it is, the mission and the uniqueness of it right now as it is a company that is AAPI driven. It is a great and thoughtful conversation that you do not want to miss out on at all!

The Creative Chimera - XinYi Tan / Don't Be Strangers Podcast / Ep 7708 Sep 202200:48:16

Send us a text

Today's episodes with the super creative and interesting XinYi Tan from the "Don't Be Strangers" Podcast.  Kyle, our host was on an episode of "Don't Be Strangers" check that out as well! Episode

We talked about finding your passions, creativity, being creative and loving art but not making it a career intentionally and the journey she took to become a creative chimera nomad.

More about XinYi Tan:

I was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and moved with my family to Dallas, Texas at age 7. My first couple of years in school were a huge struggle. English was not my first language and entering 2nd grade after skipping almost a year of school due to the move made making friends quite difficult. But even after learning English,

I never felt quite at home... anywhere.

  1. Culturally, I wasn’t fully American, but when my family and I visited Malaysia, I was painfully aware that I didn’t quite belong there either.
  2. When it came to my passions, I could never make up my mind on a specific creative outlet or medium to hone — not because of indecisiveness (ok, maybe a little bit), but because I find joy in learning, remixing, and over-complicating mixed-media projects. But before I found pride in calling myself a creative chimera, I was hopelessly lost in how to identify my art and therefore myself.
  3. Being aromantic meant that I couldn’t relate to 99% of the stories represented in pop culture.

In short, I thought I was an alien. With every friend that I’ve found (who listened to me wholeheartedly and confided in me sincerely), I began to feel less and less alien and more and more at home on Earth.  I began to feel like I belonged.

Podcast Spotlight is an episode that we will do where we will be talking to another podcaster that is Asian and is doing a podcast that is AAPI specific /Asian themes or Asia diaspora specific.  We hope by doing this we are able to build relationships with other Asian podcasters and help each other build/grow in the podcast space that needs more Asian voices.

Today, we are talking to Raymond Luu of Reel Asian Podcast. We talked about his background, the reason that he got into podcasting and the Reel Asian Podcast of course. If you enjoyed our conversation, please make sure you check out Reel Asian Podcast as they just started their season 4.

Being Trans In Asia (Emery's Transition Story) w/ Emery Fung / #6528 Jan 202201:06:42

Send us a text

This is the season finale for season 3. Thank you for joining us on this great journey and we hope that you have gained something from it. We will be taking a small break from uploading and will be back in the spring. So please don't forget about us and please come back to us when we are back in a few months.

Also, please give us a 5 ⭐ rating on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and wherever you can give us a rating! An Apple Podcast Review is greatly appreciated as well. Don't forget to share this with friends and family and now to our episode today with our past guest (Episode 28), a podcaster from Awkward Turtle at Work, Emery Fung!

Emery is a Hong Kong-born, native English and Cantonese speaker who has lived in the UK for over 10 years. His joy so far has been in working with people. His skills are in building a community, foresting relationships, business development, research and pitching. Outside of his professional life (recruiter), he is a LGBT advocate, Social Media Junkie and Sports fanatic. He can be found playing football, hockey or wake-surfing across Hong Kong!

In the previous episode, Emery and I talked about his experience studying at a boarding school in the UK which is a big part of who he is. However, we did not cover another important part of who he is and his experience. So in this episode, we will be talking about Emery's transition story (from female to male), being trans in Asia, his thoughts on the trans/LGBTQ+issues in Asia and much more. We also did a life update with Emery as so much has happened for him in all areas since we recorded our first episode.

Thank you for listening and we hope you enjoyed this episode and learned something from it. If you want to learn more, feel free to go over to Emery's page/content for more.

FEEL EVERYTHING and Asian Talk w/ Ben Aqua / #6428 Jan 202201:02:44

Send us a text

Please give us a 5 ⭐ rating on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and wherever you can give us a rating! An Apple Podcast Review is greatly appreciated as well. Don't forget to share this with friends and family and now to our episode today with the awesome artist, photographer, musician, content creator, and cute Asian, Ben Aqua (they/them).

We talked previously on Never Jaded Podcast about his creative journey/process. However, after that conversation, Ben brought up the fact that we didn't talk about their Asian identity and asked them about it despite the fact that Never Jaded is all about giving flowers to Asian creators.

So that's why in today's episode the conversation is about being Asian, being queer and how all that interconnects which influence their art/content. We also touched on our feelings/thoughts about the Anti-Asian Hate that has been going on and much more that you should be tuning into.
