87: [Jessie Buttafuoco] Protect the Legacy of Victims // Part 213 Sep 202400:39:14
Content warning: substance abuse, substance use disorder, infidelity, serial infidelity, narcissistic abuse, assault, attempted murder, and gun violence.

As shared in part one of her story, Jessie Buttafuoco is a mental health professional, advocate, speaker, and co-victim of gun violence from Long Island, New York. Her journey in the media began at an incredibly young age, as the result of a vicious attack and attempt against her mother's life in 1992.  Shortly thereafter, pieces of Jessie's family story would be covered by what felt like every media outlet. However, Jessie's own experiences navigating the media, growing up in the public eye, and healing from prolonged trauma have gone largely unshared. Her goals in imparting more of what came next in her personal journey are to bring awareness to the impact and potential detriment of non-consensual media coverage, to offer support to other survivors, and to change the legislative landscape for future generations. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful that Jessie was willing to share so much of her over 30-year journey within the true crime landscape with our audience today.

Content warning: abuse, child abuse, gun violence, grief, loss, death, and murder.

Chaplain Peggy has been a victim and patient advocate for over twenty years. She found her calling after America faced mass tragedy on September 11th 2001. After that day, she felt forced to answer a deeper call to serve her community, especially for those members in greater need. She also is co-host on the impactful podcast, Near Death, with Nikki Boyer, on which she shares more about her grief work. This conversation with Chaplain Peggy is deeply appreciated. This is also the very first interview we have conducted with an advocate that does not identify as a victim herself, but who has brought much healing and support to the victim community. We are so very grateful for her work with victims and other patients alike, as well as this candid conversation about the intricacies of her experiences as a chaplain in the most populous county in the United States.

She was brutally attacked and raped by a man in her neighborhood in her early twenties. For years, she attempted to report her assault via many different avenues, especially when she realized her attacker was a serial killer haunting Milwaukee and surrounding areas over the span of two decades. Despite never receiving personal justice, she has continued to speak out on behalf of the North Side Strangler’s other victims, and to end the silence she was met with for years. She does so via her book, The Untold Story, The One Who Got Away, as well as her YouTube channel, Sip and Speak the Tea with D and D (which also features Danette Ousley, Denise's cousin, who is another What Came Next guest). The Broken Cycle Media team is so grateful for the advocacy and inspiration Denise has mustered, despite all that came next in her journey.

42: [Commissioner Jennifer Morrison - The Hero Maker Podcast] Tremendous Ripple Effects10 Nov 202300:34:36
*Content warning: rape, murder, serial murder.

Commissioner Jennifer Morrison has had a long career in public safety and law enforcement. However, her trajectory as an advocate became clearer with the life-altering loss of two dear friends during her formative, college years. It is with this same passion for justice and advocacy that she began a prolific career in public safety, becoming the first female police chief of Colchester County, Vermont and the first female public safety commissioner of the state of Vermont. Her more recent, related efforts in the media are what brought us together though; the Broken Cycle Media team is so grateful she was willing to share all that came next in her journey of advocacy, which includes the creation of her riveting, impactful program, The Hero Maker Podcast.

This episode is dedicated to Rachael Raver, Warren Fulton, the seven other lives lost at the hands of their murderer, and the survivors and co-victims effected by these horrific tragedies.

38: [WCN Presents] SWW S14 Updates // Part 113 Oct 202300:36:57
*Content warning: domestic abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, and non-consensual pornography.

Season Fourteen of Something Was Wrong began airing on October 20th, 2022 and the last episode aired on January 3rd, 2023. The season highlighted the narratives of Kaylan, Melissa, and Sara and their very toxic, abusive relationships with a man named Jake, as well as the abuse their children faced. As the season progressed, it included several accounts from other victims and acquaintances of Jake as well. Jake continued to leverage his professional connections in the media to add validity to his dating presence and in turn, victimized over forty women. On December 13th, 2022, the guests of Season 14 also participated in a SWW Live event on which they discussed the impact of the season & answered some listeners’ questions. One week later, a petition was created to call for Jake to face legal accountability. And despite the fact that less than a year passing since its release, quite a lot has happened. The Broken Cycle Media team is so grateful for Kaylan, Melissa, and Sara’s involvement, as well as the rest of the guests' of season 14, and the impact their sharing has made. We are also grateful to host this conversation with Kaylan and Melissa about all that’s come next since Season 14 aired.
