| What About Vietnam – S5-E7 - The Rise of Unique Dining Experiences in Vietnam | 04 Dec 2023 | 00:57:08 | |
In our show today we get to explore the evolving food culture in Vietnam, with a focus on the growth of new culinary experiences and the expansion of dining options beyond just street food. Don’t get me wrong, Street Food is still something you must try, but don’t stop there! My wonderful guest, Jovel Chan a food writer and consultant, shares her insights on the influx of chefs from Vietnam and abroad, the rise of upscale establishments, and the overall refinement and enhancement of the dining scene in cities like Saigon and Hanoi. Many talented chefs have come to Vietnam, particularly in cities like Saigon and Hanoi, to set up their own restaurants and cater to both tourists and locals looking for something different. These chefs bring with them their expertise and creativity, introducing new flavors, techniques, and cuisines to the Vietnamese food scene. Additionally, the rise of five-star hotels and the opening of more malls in Vietnam have further diversified the dining scene. This has led to a wider variety of cuisines being available, catering to different tastes and preferences. It was pure joy to have this time with Jovel as we laughed and agreed on so many topics and shared experiences. I hope you can forgive the slight ‘cross talk’ in places, but I think if I didn’t leave that in, you would miss out on the connection we had, and wanted to share with you. You can find all about Jovel’s Saigon Social, dining guides and so much more on her website here Follow Jovel here:

Bac Giang, is a picturesque place that often remains under the radar until the Lychee Festival, typically featured in social pages and news around June. This show delves into the motivations behind his journey; the significance of the lychees to the region and the community, and how best to navigate a visit there. Jesse has a wonderful gift for self-expression and description which will immediately transport you to the experiences he had during his time in the heart of Bac Giang province, Luc Ngan, the township designated as the biggest growing township for lychees. He provides valuable tips on organizing your trip and strongly recommends it as a destination to visit, just a short 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi, especially for photographers and tropical fruit enthusiasts. | What About Vietnam - S5-5 - The famous Hai Van Pass experience: Insights from a seasoned traveller | 12 Oct 2023 | 00:33:11
If you're planning a holiday in Vietnam and have a penchant for motorbike rides and scenic routes, your quest will inevitably lead you to the iconic Hải Vân Pass (Đèo Hải Vân). The Hải Vân Pass is more than just a road; it's a legendary motorbike route nestled in the heart of central Vietnam. In 2008, it garnered global recognition as the BBC and the Top Gear crew ventured through its winding trails, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for motorbike enthusiasts and adventure seekers. But what sets the Hải Vân Pass apart is not just its breathtaking landscapes. It holds a pivotal place in history as a crucial route during the Vietnam War, bridging the north and south of the country. Today, it stands as a symbol of Vietnam's resilience and progress. To uncover the hidden gems of the Hải Vân Pass, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Moonie, a seasoned media professional, and traveller, with over eight years of living in Vietnam and multiple explorations of the Hải Vân Pass, Chris's first-hand experiences and deep understanding of the region make him an invaluable source of information for anyone contemplating a journey along this iconic route. Chris's own odyssey in Vietnam began in 2013, when he ventured to Hoi An with his son. He was instantly captivated by the country, its people, and the irresistible charm of Hoi An. A chance encounter with a special lady during his visit further cemented his decision to relocate to Hoi An. Since then, he has been a resident of An Bang, a once-sleepy village that has transformed into a bustling tourist destination only 10 mins out of Hoi An. The Hải Vân Pass, no doubt, is a paradise for Instagram enthusiasts, but what sets it apart is the array of unique stops along the way. From oyster farms to the Dream Springs, this motorbike excursion offers more than just scenic beauty. But we will let you decide after listening. Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, leave us a review, and share it with your fellow adventurers. | What About Vietnam – S5_E3 – Heritage and discovery in Saigon, The Mekong Delta and Dalat | 16 Aug 2023 | 01:17:38
In this podcast episode, I have the opportunity to introduce you to Vicki Thai, a Health Care Sales professional living in Utah, USA, with Vietnamese heritage. Vicki's family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was four years old, and during her growing up, she had never given much thought to her Vietnamese background. However, a moment of vulnerability in her mother's health led her to realize the importance of experiencing her heritage. She decided to plan a trip to Vietnam with her mother and reached out to the "What About Vietnam" podcast for assistance. As I knew the background to the tour, I took great pleasure in planning this trip for Vicki and her mum, which included visits to Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat. These locations held special significance for Vicki and her mother, allowing them to explore their roots and connect with their heritage. Unexpectedly, the trip evoked strong emotions and a newfound appreciation for their Vietnamese identity. During their stay in Vietnam, Vicki and her mother engaged with the local people, immersed themselves in the country's culture, and marveled at the landscapes. This experience transformed Vicki's perception of her birthplace, instilling a deep sense of pride in her heritage. She also praises the warmth and thoughtfulness of the Vietnamese people, particularly their tour guides, and one in particular in Saigon, Ms Thuy. The episode highlights Vicki's journey through Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat, showcasing her awe and discovery of these places. I think for those who don’t live in their country of birth, you will relate to Vicki's story. Despite the trip going mostly smoothly, there was a minor glitch, illustrating that while many aspects can be controlled, some factors remain unpredictable. From the bustling vibrant city of Saigon, Vicki takes us by the hand as she describes her love of the bustling city of Saigon, to her awe and disbelief cruising through the Mekong Delta and then to discovering through the forests, the city of Dalat. A city she totally didn’t expect, while being her mothers’ birth city. At a deeper level this episode offers insight into the transformative power of heritage exploration and the deep connections it can foster. | What About Vietnam – S5- E2 – Choosing Hoi An as a Digital Nomad Destination | 25 Jul 2023 | 01:03:22
I’m thrilled to have such an engaging conversation with our guest today about the digital nomad lifestyle. Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just curious about this exciting way of life, this episode is a must-listen! We get down to “tin tacks” as we talk through the evolving landscape of digital nomading and the transformation since Covid. No longer is it just for the youthful adventure seekers, employers are now funding some people to work this way, as they now recognise working remotely doesn’t have to impact output given the right set up. Hoi An and the The Hub provide workers a unique experience in Vietnam and now that the E-Visa stays are being extended to 90 days this looks like being a very viable option for more people. Flo is uniquely qualified to speak to this topic having lived abroad since he was 16. Originally a Berliner, he has a Cambridge education, and has lived in 7 other countries throughout his life. With a background in Development Aid and a IT Agency owner he fell in love with Hoi An after being a customer of the The Hub back in 2017. He bought the space in early 2021 and rebuilt it nearby, in the middle of the rice fields in ‘22/’23. [00:04:07] Whats great about the community in Hoi An. | What About Vietnam - S5-15 - Yen Bai - Discover luxury in the heart of nature | 18 Jul 2024 | 00:31:53
In this episode of the What About Vietnam podcast, I had the pleasure of uncovering Yen Bai and Tu Le—a region and destination resort I’d describe as a true “diamond in the rough” in Vietnam. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and minimal development, Yen Bai is perfect for those seeking tranquillity and a break from city life. Imagine being able to hear your own breath, surrounded by minimal noise and almost no traffic—just the occasional local cows and chickens. My guest, Hylton Lipkin, the General Manager of Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa Yen Bai, provided an in-depth look at what makes this area so special. I stayed at his resort, the only one of its kind in the region, offering a luxury experience in what I am calling - the heart of nature. That is not to say there aren’t other types of Homestay options in the region, however for that kind of experience you might like to check out the show S3-E2 My journey from Hanoi to Yen Bai (being the province) was a comfortable 4.5 to 5-hour drive, making it a convenient escape for Hanoians. From my personal experience, I’d suggest a stay of at least 2 nights, so you can enjoy the surrounding walks, hotel facilities and relaxation. Hylton highlighted nearby attractions like Mù Cang Chải,( 1.5hrs drive) famous for its terraced rice fields, and the unique cultural heritage of the Hmong, Thai, and Kinh people who inhabit the region. Well worth driving to for the amazing scenery around every corner. We also discussed the local food delicacies and accommodation options at Le Champ Resort, from glamping-style rooms to luxurious bungalows. The resort offers a blend of comfort and natural beauty, with natural hot springs, an exhilarating 1 km zip line, and an infinity pool with stunning mountain views. Hylton also mentioned a new property he manages in Mù Cang Chải called Garrya, set to open in August. This new destination will allow guests to explore both regions in one trip. My thanks to Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa for sponsoring this episode and the Garrya property which is luxury and wellness on whole new level!

| What About Vietnam – S4- E20 – Hoi An – A life changing experience for a singer songwriter | 22 Mar 2023 | 00:49:12 | |
In today’s show we explore Vietnam and the high hopes of a young traveller, singer and songwriter, who through his love of adventure and music found himself falling in love with Vietnam and its people. Our guest Luke Webster talks about his travels and how he found himself enjoying a more relaxed pace, with happy smiling people and welcoming feelings of family and home. He describes the sensory overload that hit him when he first arrived, and the beauty and serendipitous happenings that steered him to create the kind of music he had been wanting to make all his life. Luke has written and recorded an album of his original music in Hoi An, Vietnam. He studied English Literature at Uni, then went on to do 3 Camp America seasons and two Ski seasons in France. At the age of 23 he took a leap of faith and flew to Vietnam on a one-way ticket; met a musician from Israel and formed a band in Hoi An called The Langurs. Details of his Album soon to be released on Spotify will be provided below. He gigged continuously throughout the COVID years, also teaching English, guitar, piano, singing, Ukelele, and drums to expats in Hoi An. After exploring the north, Hanoi and Cat Ba, he describes falling in love all over again in Hoi An. The vibe of this old town (or country town as he calls it) including the beach area of An Bang began to open doors to allow him to perform regularly and craft his own style and repertoire of music to an ever increasing local following. Luke speaks to all of us who recognise the value of travel and especially to places where the culture is foreign to your own. He talks about how traveling and working things out as you go develops you as a person, and how it can broaden the mind to think outside the box.

| What About Vietnam – S4- E19 – Why Vietnam wins the hearts of the daring | 27 Feb 2023 | 00:45:36 | |
Is Vietnam for the daring? The brave hearted. Or is it a country that you can feel confident about challenging yourself in, no matter what is daring for you! If Vietnam feels like a leap of faith to you, then this is the right show to tune into. In todays show we explore some of the things that contribute to making Vietnam a country you can feel safe in, and yet you can push your own personal boundaries. For some people visiting any country in the SEAsia region can feel like a deep dive into uncharted and circumspect waters. If you'd like to experience Vietnam with a sense of curiosity and confidence then my guest today is just the person to allay any of your fears, real or otherwise. Once a tourist to Vietnam from Barcelona Spain, now General Manager of the Fusion Original Saigon, my guest Alvaro Moreno does a wonderful job of identifying those often-unspoken gems that make travel so easy in Vietnam. As a lover of travel Alvaro shares some of the ways in which Vietnam can offer the traveller the chance to challenge themselves in relative safety, and on a range of budgets. He speaks about the high level of connectivity within the country digitally and how easy it is to travel about using various modes of transport, made easy to book on any mobile device through an App. You may be surprised to hear his favourite foodie experience. We talk about the fact chefs in Vietnam are being adventurous with their menus and restaurant experiences, particularly in Saigon and Hanoi. We touch on the growth of the country and its forward thinking that’s changing its appearance to the tourist and offering them more choices. A competitiveness that adds up to different levels of experiences in the country. Born and raised in Valencia, Spain, Alvaro spent the first two decades of his life growing up, working and traveling around Europe. Back in 2021, Alvaro took a six-month sabbatical from his job at the Barcelo Hotel Group in Spain to take a trip of a lifetime through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Nepal and India. During the journey he decided to move to South East Asia, in part so he could continue exploring the region. However, he chose Vietnam to be his second home. The WHY will become apparent during the interview. He has worked on the pre-opening phase of three hotels and one re-brand in Vietnam over the past 8 years, and he sits with great pride in his staff and hotel as GM of the Fusion Original Saigon Centre. | What About Vietnam - S4-16 - Ninh Binh - The mystical rival to Halong Bay | 08 Dec 2022 | 00:28:25
Ninh Binh stands out in more ways than one if you set your compass to the north of Vietnam. Located 60 miles south of Hanoi lies this magical, almost mystical province featuring mountainous peaks and a labrynth of waterways inviting you to explore its many viewpoints. Sharp limestone peaks, shoot up from the ground reminiscent of what you might see doing the same thing out of water, in Halong bay. Which explains why they often refer to it as the Ha Long Bay on land. It is by all accounts Halong Bay’s mystical rival. My guest, Jack Taylor joins me on the show. His talents lie in the skilful way he has captured the essence of the region in his videos. Jack, an English teacher by profession has been travelling and living abroad for most of his adult life. Spain for 3 years, China for 4, and now Thailand for 4 years has meant Jack has had a front row seat to some of SE Asia’s treasures. Don’t forget to check out his You Tube channel “I go cool places”. As you will see in Jack’s video of Ninh Binh the outstanding beauty and serenity are breathtaking. Add to that a National park featuring a staggering amount of wildlife, and many pagodas including one of the biggest being the Bai Dinh Pagoda. You can easily get a sense of why some people think it has more to offer than Halong Bay. It is important to note that the Bai Dinh pagoda is considered a masterpiece of both nature and heritage, and it is the pride of Vietnamese people in terms of its quintessential architecture, culture and historical value. And, it’s NOT the major drawcard for the area. Jack does a great job in giving us some handy tips for staying in the region, what are the best times to visit and some of “The Must Do” things. I hope you enjoy the show and will surely investigate this region as a place of surreal beauty, almost lost in time, close to Hanoi. Check out his Video on his stay in Ninh Binh HERE. I wanted to wrap up the year of 2022 and go out with a bang, and I couldn’t think of a better way to do it. This is the last show for the year. I close the year on a truly happy note with the achievement of over 72 shows, and the release of my ebook called – Book, Pack & Stay - A travel Guide to Vietnam. | What About Vietnam - S4-15 - What makes solo female travellers love Vietnam? | 22 Nov 2022 | 00:48:06
There are many reasons why Vietnam is a stand out favourite destination amongst female solo travellers. One of the dominant reasons is safety. The others reasons we explore more deeply in the show as they stem from the Vietnamese people themselves, and how they recognise women empowerment in their own culture. However, the aim of this show is to allay any fears a female may have about taking a solo trip to Vietnam. You are going to hear from both a westerner as in myself and a Vietnamese hospitality professional living in Saigon. My lovely guest is Camellia Dinh. With over 10 years of experience working in the hospitality industry for some of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands including Park Hyatt, Sofitel, and the M-Gallery Collection, Camellia has a wealth of experiences and local knowledge to share. Currently she holds the position as Director of Sales at Fusion Original Saigon Centre Camellia tells us it is not always convenient to travel with friends or family as matching up schedules with study and jobs makes it almost impossible. She says that she started travelling alone as teenager, and over time has come to really enjoy her trips alone, and it has afforded her some fun experiences. That’s not to say she doesn’t love travelling with friends and family when she can. Together we’d like to share our own personal experiences to ensure women considering doing this, can do so with confidence. Especially if the female traveller loves food, culture, scenery, shopping, pampering, wellness, adventure and making new friends along the way. The doors for a “female solo traveller” are about to open, and Vietnam is waiting to greet you with open arms. | What About Vietnam - S4 -E14 – Con Dao Islands – An archipelago of pristine beauty and complexity | 31 Oct 2022 | 00:33:29
My guest describes this destination as ,“it's probably my favorite spot in Vietnam, and maybe ever, just due to its complexity and beauty”. It’s great to welcome Conor back to the show. We have worked together before on his own Podcast called The Comeback, where I was the guest. He keeps himself very busy living in HCMC as he is also a teacher and journalist. It is testament to his journalistic skills that he is great at being descriptive, so you will get a really good feel for his travel experience. It’s fresh, honest and open without any hidden agenda or push one way or the other. While Conor has high praise for the islands, as we explored the activities during his stay more deeply we discovered some of islands dark history and limitations. We unpacked the “how to get there” travel experience, and how much time you should allow for a stay. If you are the luxury traveller, this place has your name on it. As it features a stunning Six Senses resort. For those seeking a restful quiet chilled-out stay, Con Dao should be your first choice. Ranked No. 1 Best Resort In Southeast Asia. Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards 2021 No matter what your budget, if you are starting to investigate beach side holidays in Vietnam, Con Dao will come up, and it is the perfect “get away” from it all. | What About Vietnam – S4-E12 – Contemporary art in Vietnam - A window to the future | 04 Oct 2022 | 00:56:06
Contemporary art is shining fresh eyes on Vietnam. In some small way I am hoping through the story telling of my guest today you will get some deeper understanding of some of the things you will be seeing and experiencing on your trip. If you are an Art Collector or art enthusiast there are links below to lead you to where you need to go. Today’s story begins in the early 90’s. Not that long ago if you think about it. But years before any reconciliation between the US and Vietnam. I am talking with the visionary of Contemporary Art in Vietnam – world renowned Suzanne Lecht Vietnam in the 90’s is a country rebuilding after being war torn for so long. You will be inspired by Suzanne as she tells about her initial involvement with the art scene in Vietnam after her husband died while they were living in Tokyo, and how she followed her dream two years later to seek out some artists in Vietnam, known as the Gang of 5. Ultimately, she goes on to make her dream come true to work with, and live with them, as she curated and exhibited their work to the outside world. Together with the Gang of 5 she builds her dream house. More on that in the show. While I had done the interview with Suzanne previously, I got to meet her during my recent trip to Vietnam. Meeting her in person and having time with her in her home, and in, what is in essence “The Salon or gallery” she built with the local artists. Suzanne is an inspiring woman who you can tell lives her life with passion and purpose. As two blondes, we laughed at the irony of our affinity with this country and its people. The Salon (Art Vietnam Gallery) is an intimate, creative reflection of the culture of Vietnam, open by appointment only. It can be booked for private parties, art consultations, poetry readings, music events as well as other cultural activities. Suzanne continues to curate exhibitions and shows in Vietnam and other cities worldwide to expose Vietnamese artists in the international art world. Todays program is about sharing another Podcasters show, which will give you a whole new perspective on travel as seen through the eyes of a different host, on a different show. In this scenario I am the guest. Our topic is, as you would guess- Travel In Vietnam post covid. Malcom heralds from the UK, so hello to all my UK listeners, you might really relate to Malcom as while he has travelled to Vietnam previously and really enjoyed his stay, he and I had much to share in experiences and certain cities he enjoyed as in Hanoi, HCMC and Nha Trang. My thanks to Malcolm for asking me to come on the show. She loves to travel and experience new cultures and has become a Travel expert for westerners interested in traveling to Vietnam. | What About Vietnam – S4-7 – Hué the city – past, present and future | 19 Jul 2022 | 00:50:28
Hué is a city not to be missed on your journey throughout Vietnam. Boasting a patchwork of imperialism and French colonialism you will find yourself delving back hundreds of years as you explore the legacy of war and a dynasty spanning 13 generations. It’s a fascinating place. Quite beautiful as you find beaches and a river in the same city. Over a 3-4 day visit you can take your time meandering by bicycle through the countryside discovering historical relics and pagodas dating back to the 18th century. You will be charmed by the river, the paddies fields and local museums, plus you will gain a whole new perspective of some of the hardest fought battles in the American war. On the show you will learn the difference between the north and south; the best accommodations to enjoy the beautiful sunsets the city is renowned for; the best food to try, and some old local stories handed down over the years. My guest is Norwegian born expat Anders Krystad who found his new home in Hué nearly 20 years ago. He took it upon himself to write a very detailed guide book just prior to Covid, which is the reason why I knew he was the right person to talk about this famous city. Anders lives with his family in Hue and through in his involvement with local football he is a strong advocate for the city as a tourist destination. If it’s history you are into, then this show will give you some context to some of the major attractions and sites in Hué that you won’t want to miss. Find out more about Hue from one local that really knows this place inside out:-

| What About Vietnam - S4-6 - Craft beers in Vietnam - A heads up! | 04 Jul 2022 | 00:29:09 | |
The Craft Beer scene is probably one of the “biggest ” and best leaked travel secrets about Vietnam to hit the tourist map. It is unmistakably an industry that is being fast tracked as we head out of Covid. It is a “scene”. It's a taste sensation. It's a "thing" you have to try. As you will find out in today’s episode, it’s a product produced from passion, skill and local flavours, which means it also has a story. You don’t have to strictly be a beer drinker to join in the fun. But you do have to come to Vietnam to experience it. After finding himself responsible for Foster’s breweries in Asia, India, China and Vietnam – he always loved coming to Vietnam, which is where he eventually decided to set up business after leaving Foster’s. Vietnam is a great beer market. One fact you might find interesting to note ,and we talk about it in the show, is that 95% of all alcohol consumed in Vietnam, is beer. We discuss some of the nuances of this fascinating industry and the brewing process such as :
Craft beers and tastings are not just for your hearty beer drinkers. The most fun comes from trying, testing, guessing, trying …and doing it all over again. Having a laugh with friends and meeting new people. You get the drift! Will you have a great fun experience?…. Definitely! Where do you find Five Elements Craft beers?? | What About Vietnam - S4-5 - The 10 best things about Nha Trang you may not know about | 21 Jun 2022 | 00:59:37
When looking for beachside locations in Vietnam, you are absolutely spoiled for choice. While the country has a long coastline, what is still very much unknown, is information about one such beach paradise and the easy access it has to a sprinkling of islands that make for exquisitely restful getaways from the world. If you are looking for a beach side city with access to several beautiful islands + is known to have 300 days of sunshine a year, then you need to head to Nha Trang. In the show Colm, who has been running his own digital media company, Halo Media since 2015, speaks to the changes that have taken place over the past 12 years, and how Nha Trang faired during the pandemic. I won't kid you here, it has received over time - good and not so good reviews. Colm fell in love literally with Nha Trang as he married a local Vietnamese and is raising his young family there. He says he has seen a lot of tourists come and go, and now the country is open, it’s a great time to visit as the burden of 'over tourism' is long past. The best thing about Colm and the role he plays in the city’s tourism, is that he does a lot of digital media work with local hotels, tourism bodies, brands and eating establishments. In fact, he has the foreigners perspective to offer up for us travellers and the local viewpoint being a resident for so long. So settle back for a super interesting show about this beachside paradise as we explore: 1. 05.04 – The weather 2. 07.02 – The best beaches 3. 15.02 – Island hopping – walking on water 4. 16.01 – The Salt fields 5. 22.37 – Good time to visit after Covid 6. 24.26 – The culture – Explore Cham civilisation and pagodas 7. 26.24 – Biking about on a Vespa 8. 31.03 – Mud baths, good for the skin 9. 32.59 – Food – The seafood mecca 10. 42.35 – Golf – 3 challenging courses 20 mins apart 11. 45.09 – Cam Ranh – styles of accommodation + resorts and A SPECIAL 2 NIGHT STAY OFFER – More detail on the website - www.whataboutvietnam.com The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. | What About Vietnam S4-4 – Planning a Wedding in Vietnam – Everything you need to know | 30 May 2022 | 00:42:01
When planning a wedding there are so many factors to consider. For those exploring options in this space I say “What about Vietnam?” As you will hear from my lovely guest Jenny, a Wedding and Event Planner for 10 years in Vietnam, “the crazier the wedding the better”. Beach weddings; on top of a mountain; in a cave; on a boat; paragliding onto the beach as an entrance; rich and colourfully traditional; to everything in between. You will soon discover in this program, Jenny, found here at “Weddings and Special events by Hoang Anh”, has a lot to say about the kinds of things the bride and groom can experience in Vietnam. Climate, food, flowers, staff, culture and many beautiful locations can bring to life a dream wedding, that is both uniquely special and culturally rich for everyone who attends. Hoang Anh, Jenny, was born, raised and educated in Hanoi. She considers herself extremely fortunate to be living and working in the capital city of Vietnam. As a wedding planner now for a decade starting in Thailand and then Bali, she says she doesn’t want to be defined by just her job, as she also loves to travel, read, write, learn, teach, and experiment all the time, when she is not working. To her credit, her first book will be published this year. Hoang Anh, who for easy conversation allows me to call her Jenny, is a very hands on planner as she engages with all aspects of the event, including the travel plans and arrangements for pre and post events; family get togethers’, and parties of celebration. You will have a good laugh at the “Hangover” story. For anyone exploring options for a “special “ kind of wedding where you can really open up your “idea hat”, or if you are trying to meet family and friends somewhere in the middle of the globe, I strongly suggest you have a listen, and find out what there is to know. You might find out that for value, Vietnam is really 'up there' and starting to give Thailand and Bali a run for their money. You can find more about Jenny’s business and discuss your ideas using the following links: LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/hoang-anh-duong-vu Other projects that Jenny works on The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. | S5 - E13 - Out & About in Nha Trang – The city of 300 days of sunshine a year | 20 Apr 2024 | 00:18:54
Welcome back to What About Vietnam! Get your ears ready for another insightful episode in our mini-series, Out & About in Vietnam where I check out what Nha Trang has to offer, in a 3 day stay. Nha Trang is not just another beautiful beach destination; it's a cultural melting pot. From the moment you step foot in Nha Trang, you're greeted by its buzzy, somewhat noisy atmosphere along the promenade. For the best stunning beach shoreline view, in the evening, I suggest heading to the Skylight roof top bar. An even better idea is to get up early and enjoy a mesmerising sunrise in the quietness of the day. A quick mention about the lovely Potique Hotel who sponsored this episode. A relatively new elegant city hotel, offering spacious well-designed rooms in that rich Indochine style with amazing beach views. Private access arranged at the beach and cafés, and restaurants right at your front door. We loved our stay. Go direct to the hotel LINK HERE for the best offers and mention this podcast. But there's more to Nha Trang than meets the eye. Beyond the beaches, I briefly touch on the variety of cuisines available to tantalise your taste buds. I forget to mention the amazing feast I had of lobster. So cheap and so delicious, you can find the restaurant HERE. For those adventure seekers, Nha Trang is a treasure trove of adrenaline-pumping activities. From exhilarating water sports, including top-notch diving, to the excitement of island hopping, which we tried as it included the mud baths experience!!! Let’s just say, – it's an experience unlike any other! | What About Vietnam - S4-1- Art in Vietnam - Storytelling at its best | 26 Apr 2022 | 00:49:16
Art in Vietnam is everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to actually know what you are looking at. As a tourist busy trying to cram so much in to a stay in Vietnam, the artist’s true technique or storytelling, is often lost on us. Art takes many forms in Vietnam, as in lacquerware, paintings, silk, lanterns, pottery, fashion, homewares, and as you will learn in this show, there is a difference between an “Artist” and a Craftsman, who may produce the same style or product many times, yet it takes true skill to do this. We discuss the differences. And then of course how do you know what’s real or fake? Believe it, or not! Not everything is a copy, or fake! With the advantage of my talented artist Bridget March, we are going to take it back 100 years and really talk about how Vietnam has developed in the art world. Find out what some of the older forms of art told in their depictions of mountains that were meant to represent heaven; it’s rivers -the paths of life, and people painted so tiny they are meant to symbolize the very small space they take up in the whole universe. Nothing short of profound. Bridget is a brilliant story teller. An artist herself of considerable note, Bridget is originally from the UK. As a successful product designer of 20 years, she went on to became a senior lecturer at Leeds University of Art. Following her dreams, she moved to Saigon in 2012 to fulfil her lifelong ambition of being a full-time artist. That love affair has only grown over time as she pursues her own work in Hoi An and encourages and supports local artists in central Vietnam. She has published 3 books about Hoi An, Sapa and Saigon and has had 7 solo exhibitions of her paintings and drawings in Vietnam galleries and at International hotels. She is also well recognised as the curator for the wonderful art gallery space at the Anantara Hoi An Resort. She has her own delightful gallery located in Hoi An – See here for details Stick around for this show, as it’s got lots of hidden gems. We speak about a list of her favourite galleries, the blog listing those is here;- https://www.marchgallery-hoian.com/post/vietnam-s-contemporary-art-in-2022 The gallery details and all her social pages are here. | What About Vietnam - S3-25 - One teenagers views on a holiday in Vietnam | 12 Apr 2022 | 00:32:18
When planning a trip with a family, we are always looking for places that will be of interest to the “whole” family. However, sometimes the late teen in the family is not always as enthusiastic as the rest of the clan. If you are thinking about bringing your family to Vietnam and not sure if Vietnam will hit the button for children, in particular your teen son or daughter, you might be pleasantly surprised by the views of one such teenager who visited Vietnam with me in 2019. Ethan Sanders is my guest and just also happens to be my grandson. Yes. Believe it or not as I was a young mum it shouldn’t have come as any surprise to be a young grandmother. I consider myself truly blessed. Ethan was 16 when he came to visit me in Vietnam on one of my trips. 2 years on from that visit, Ethan and I chat about some of the activities he counts as most memorable and he thoughtfully gives up some advice for future travellers who just happen to be teenagers as well. Find out what Ethan found initially most challenging? Discover the “thing” you thought your child may never do at home, but will try in Vietnam? Learn if he would go back to Vietnam as an adult. What activity did Ethan find so hilarious doing with me on the trip? Vietnam is extremely kid friendly. It is a very safe environment and you won’t need to go far to find lots of activities kids of all ages will love. From adventure, safari parks, trekking, lantern making, fantasia and theme parks. The culture alone is intoxicating and if the hotel pools and beaches don’t allure them with waters sports. Nothing will. I hope you enjoy this one, as this one is for the teens we love making memories with. If you are liking what I am doing with the show, I’d love it if you would please consider giving me a short review on Apple Podcasts/ITunes. | What About Vietnam - S3-24 - Phu Quoc - An unbelievably scenic island paradise | 28 Mar 2022 | 00:44:30
An island blessed with white sand beaches, turquoise waters, swaying palm trees and an abundance of sunshine is attractive in its own right. If you add a jungle forest, waterfalls, pepper trees, a theme park for kids and an underwater world for divers, it makes for an unbelievably rich island getaway. Phu Quoc, which is the focus of our episode today with Patricia Marques is only a short 45 min flight from HCMC, and is VISA free to visit. In fact its always been Visa FREE. The borders to Vietnam are open. Please see my detailed guide on my website for everything you need to know about travel and Visa’s to Vietnam as at 16.3.22. In this Episode we expand on things like: Best time to go; Closeness to Cambodia; Water sports; What food is most common; Is it expensive?: Pepper farms; Fish Sauce; the famous Phu Quoc dogs; Is it worth going to downtown to eat out?; Accommodation choices and how the Island is configured so you can find what you want. Patricia Marques is my guest and I was lucky enough to catch her just after a recent trip to Phu Quoc. A trip that coincided with the news that Vietnam is now open to general tourists. So our chat is current as of March 2022. A little bit about Patricia. Patricia is the General Manager of Starbucks in Vietnam, and as you would imagine with a highly demanding job like that, she looks forward to the occasional weekend getaway. Leaving on a Friday afternoon and home on a Sunday Night, she heads for Phu Quoc. Amid the myriad of things we talk about, you will soon discover that Phu Quoc makes an ideal destination for families, couples and solo travellers alike. It literally caters for many types of travellers with amazing waterfalls to visit and trekking in the jungle like National Park. To, diving, snorkelling and a Theme Park for kids, that would rival Disneyland, located in the north of the island. As a place to kick back and relax or take off into the wilderness, the island has it all, and given its location, it’s a seafood lover’s paradise. Patricia mentions a hotel she always stays at, I thought I should give you link here as it is one of my favourites as well – (This is NOT a paid for advertisement) The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. | What About Vietnam – S3-21 – Learn the best Vietnamese words to use when shopping for bargains | 15 Feb 2022 | 00:16:21
Shopping in Vietnam is “awesome” on so many levels. And while it may sound obvious - knowing some phrases or a few words in Vietnamese can really make the experience even more fun. In this episode ( part 3) Ms Ha and I expand on the ‘game” of shopping or bartering, as Ha gives us some keys words to use to help you get the item you want, at the best price. Because lets face it. That's what we want, right? Shopping is such a fun and rewarding thing to do in Vietnam as while it has all your major brands in the big cities, you will be pleasantly surprised to see many artisans and designer boutiques offering up all kinds of goods, including homewares, jewellery, and leather made products you won’t find anywhere else for the price. Even if you don’t like shopping, the markets is a must to visit as this is where the heart and soul of the people lives. See locals bargain, share gossip, laugh and enjoy the whole experience. It makes shopping in a supermarket look very boring. My thanks to Ms Ha again for her patience and wonderful skills in making the learning of Vietnamese so easy. It might prove handy to print off before you go. I apologise in advance if I don’t cover off the all the words you would like to learn, but hopefully these will be enough to get you by during your trip. I hope you have some fun learning as I did Follow on your favourite pod channel, email directly to whataboutvietnam@gmail.com
| What About Vietnam – S3-20 – Learn “special dietary requirements” in Vietnamese language | 06 Feb 2022 | 00:11:57 | |
What do you really need to know how to say in Vietnamese? In Episode 1 of this 3 part series, we start with greetings, because that’s where all polite conversations start. But, what’s the right word to politely summons a waiter? What About if you don’t eat or like spicy food? Do you have gluten free? Vegetarian? These are just some of the words we take for granted back home, but try saying them in Vietnamese when you really need to? While Ha lives in France at the moment with her partner, and works as an English to Vietnamese interpreter for a UK firm, she is no stranger to teaching us the best words and phrases to help interact with locals. Check out this video she did with Hoiannow.com a few years ago - https://youtu.be/zJaounZwfhw In todays’ episode we cover the restaurant setting where you or your travelling companion is wanting to summons a waiter or needs to make some special food requests to safeguard themselves for health reasons. This is particularly important for children and those that experience allergic reactions. The episode has purposely been kept short to enable you to focus and not get overwhelmed by too much going on. Learning Vietnamese is difficult, so we cover mainly those words hardest to explain pointing to a picture, waving hands or shaking of your head… phrases like “gluten free”, of which there are many options in Vietnam. You might like to explore article which lists some restaurants in Saigon which offer vegan and vegetarian - https://thesmartlocal-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/thesmartlocal.com/vietnam/vegan-vegetarian-restaurants-ho-chi-minh/amp/ For some additional basic phrases not covered in this podcast, check here – https://hoiannow.com/hoi-an-guide/tips-essentials/basic-vietnamese/ The transcript provided here on the website – www.whataboutvietnam.com will provide you the words covered in each episode; the actual Vietnamese spelling, meaning and phonetic pronunciation as I have interpreted it to be. | What About Vietnam – S3-19 – Learn “greetings” in Vietnamese language | 01 Feb 2022 | 00:17:18
Learning Vietnamese is not easy, but I have always thought it to be handy to know a few words in certain circumstances. English is widely spoken in the main cities, but in the North and in the more remote regions, not so much. You will soon find that the Vietnamese staff in retail and hotels have learned a few key words in English, so I’ve always thought it only fair I learn a few words of theirs. 1. What About Vietnam – S3-19 – Learn “greetings” in Vietnamese Each week will be a new episode focusing on a particular setting or scenario you may find yourself in when travelling, as the title will indicate. In each situation I have tried to pick only a few words that I hear are the most difficult to explain to a Vietnamese person. For some additional basic phrases not covered in this podcast, check here – https://hoiannow.com/hoi-an-guide/tips-essentials/basic-vietnamese/ Through the help of Hoiannow.com I managed to track down my Expert Guest, Ha Dam, a girl who did a fabulous video explaining how to use pronunciation to say Vietnamese words commonly used. See here here : https://youtu.be/LI50t5iNz2w The transcript provided here and, on the website – www.whataboutvietnam.com will provide you the words covered in each episode; the actual Vietnamese spelling, meaning and phonetic pronunciation as I have interpreted it to be. | S5- E12 - Out & About in Mui Ne – Laying bare to the winds of change | 09 Apr 2024 | 00:26:51
Here I am, "Out & About in Mui Ne," determined to share with you my findings as experienced through my eyes. It's a down-to-earth exploration of Mui Ne's hidden treasures and unique vibe. This is as authentic as it gets! Drawing inspiration from a previous episode S3- E17 I did with Nikki Cornish, I set out to explore this famous beachside location, known for its luxurious resorts like the Sailing Club Resort and its unique sand dune landscape. An Instagram favourite known to be very popular with travelling Russians, it is just a short three-hour drive away from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to improved highways, reaching Mui Ne was a breeze. I cover other other transportation options like trains and buses on the show however I opted for a private driver due to the bulk of luggage I had in tow. Lets just say, we let the winds be our guide to an interesting stay.
I hope the detail I provide helps you with your trip planning. My stay gets very personal to me, as we visit a close friend's family farm near Phan Thiet, providing a firsthand glimpse into Vietnam's agricultural heart. Having a local friend show us around made all the difference during our stay. This intimate connection not only enhanced our exploration of local seafood cuisine but also deepened our understanding of Vietnamese culture and the city's main population. Without my friend Linh’s guidance, I can candidly say we would have missed a lot. Her insights added layers of meaning to our experiences, turning an ordinary trip into a rich journey of discovery. Travel Tip:- Mui Ne is not as Westerner-friendly as other cities, with a strong Russian presence and limited English-speaking locals. I advise doing research or consulting with a Travel agent or Guide to make the most of your visit. Or get in touch with yours truly to plan your Vietnam holiday complete. Despite everything it gets thrown from Covid to typhoons…it always finds ways to astound you! So, let's kick off the year with a podcast that talks about entertainment, and more to the point - fun and laughter in the bustling city of Saigon. Let me introduce you to my guest - Niall Mackay. Niall is no stranger to the comedy scene in Saigon having lived in Saigon since 2016. A well known Stand Up Comedian, and Podcaster of his own Vietnam podcast “Seven Million bikes”, and “Did that really happen?”, he is ideally placed to talk about the evolution of comedy in Saigon. He tells us how he and his wife fell in love with Vietnam however, in the early days, they struggled to find good live comedy entertainment. So he set about to fix that. Niall takes us through some great stories of how the comedy scene has matured with some surprising talent and venues. As an organiser, promoter, and comedian himself he shares with us the bevy of talent coming through. From local Vietnamese doing English speaking comedy, to the many Expats who also relish the chance to jump on stage and bring the house down. Niall, as he will attest to, is still weathering the Covid storm of openings and lockdowns, but hopes to be back on stage next week. If nothing else this podcast will help you truly appreciate the background and effort that goes into the shows. It will certainly give you a personal insight, and a good reason to cheer him on and say hello when you possibly meet him! | What About Vietnam - S3-16 - Traveling in Vietnam Part 3 - Things NOT always in the tour program | 07 Dec 2021 | 00:14:31
The final episode in this series. A short episode to close out the series, I am again joined by Miquel Angel as we discuss the broader challenges of trip planning. “While time is in your hands” says my knowledgeable guest Miquel, it does take astute planning to get the best out of the regions within a restrictive 14 day trip, which was the basis of this series. This is a 3 -part series, so may I suggest you start with Part 1 to get the full benefit of my guest’s insights. Miquel further shares his take on places like Dalat, Phong Nha, Hanoi, Northern Highlands, Phu Quoc and Dalat. You will discover things you may not have thought possible to see in Vietnam, as they are not featured in your average program, like Tulips in Dalat and Bee farms in Phu Quoc. Because as he says “You cannot fit everything into one visit to Vietnam”. Miquel is a Catalan citizen, originally from 100 km north of Barcelona and resides in Ho Chi Minh City. His knowledge of Vietnam during his 22 years of living and working here is wide, and as much as possible, is always linked to sustainability, tourism training and development of the hospitality industry. He is highly regarded in the circle of government and it is his expressed interest in growing tourism in Vietnam in a healthy and sustainable way.
