The Power and Paradox of Gratitude24 Nov 202500:19:07

Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces we can tap into—for our mindset, relationships, and work. Yet it's also full of paradox. It can be hard to access authentic gratitude when things are messy, stressful, or hard and it can even become hollow when we use it to cover up discomfort. On this episode, I talk about the power and the paradox of gratitude, especially at this time of year. I share how genuine appreciation can help us stay grounded, connected, and strong, even in the midst of uncertainty or challenge.

How to Create a Culture of Winning with John Beam18 Nov 202501:10:51

This is an episode to honor the late, great John Beam who passed away last week.  John was the Athletic Director and former Head Football Coach at Laney College in Oakland, CA.  He and I met in 1989 when I arrived at Skyline High School in Oakland where he coached football for 22 years.  John and his Laney College Eagles were featured in the series Last Chance U on Netflix in 2020.  As an incredibly successful high school and college football coach over more than 40 years, John knew a lot about how to build a winning culture – in football, business, and life.  This interview was conducted in August of 2020 and we are re-airing this conversation in honor of John's great life, wisdom, and legacy.

We live in a world obsessed with blame; constantly focused on who's at fault for the various challenges we face, individually and collectively.  While this makes sense and is understandable for so many reasons, it doesn't serve us and often leads us down an unproductive path.  On this episode, I talk about the disempowering aspects of blame and offer some ideas for how we can shift to responsibility in an authentic and effective way.

Let it Go12 Jul 202300:27:34

There are really only two ways to resolve any conflict or issue we face - deal with it directly, all the way through until it gets worked out…or simply let it go.  Letting things go is such an important and liberating thing to do, yet it can be challenging for us to do so authentically.  On this episode, I talk about some of the reasons it can be difficult to let things go.  I also share some specific ways we can do this consciously and effectively.

Operating with Joy and Perspective02 May 202300:25:24

Inspired by NBA star Steph Curry's brilliant performance against Sacramento, I've been thinking about the importance of operating with joy and perspective.  While it often seems like the circumstances of our work and our life dictate our level of joy and the perspective we take, we actually have much more of a choice than we often realize.  On this episode, I talk about ways for us to operate with true joy and a healthy perspective, regardless of what's going on around us.

The Paradox of Winning12 Apr 202300:31:07

We live in a culture that is obsessed with winning - in business, sports, school, and life.  And while I definitely prefer to win than to lose, there is often a real paradox in our pursuit of success.  When we get so obsessed with the outcome, we can lose perspective and forget what we're truly wanting to accomplish and experience in the process.  On this episode I talk about some of the things that make our desire to win challenging.  I also share some ways we can alter our relationship to winning that can actually lead to more authentic success and ultimately to a real sense of contentment.

The Only Way Out is Through28 Feb 202300:30:42

I went to see a powerful one-man show this week in New York called Without You, by Anthony Rapp, the actor who originated the role of Mark in the musical Rent on Broadway.  Anthony shared a moving story in the show about dealing with the loss of his mother and being told that "the only way out is through," regarding his grief journey.  This phrase and concept, while challenging at times, is so important for us to remember as we navigate various aspects of work, family, and life, especially these days.  On this episode, I talk about why it's essential for us to lean into discomfort, even when it's painful or scary.  I also share some specific things we can do individually and collectively to make our way effectively through hard things.

There are lots of numbers that we focus on at work and in life - revenue, health markers, net worth, social media followers, survey results, expenses, and many more.  And as important as these numbers can be, what's almost always more important are the people and vision behind the statistics themselves.  On this episode, I talk about some of what makes it challenging for us to keep our relationship with numbers in perspective.  I then share some specific things we can do to relate to our most important numbers in a healthy and empowering way.

The Power of Silence11 Jan 202300:28:25

I spent this past weekend at a wonderful meditation retreat.  Although I have had my own meditation practice for almost three decades and have been attending workshops of all kinds for years, this was the first time I'd been at a multi-day event like this.  I found being in silence as much as we were to be both challenging and enlightening.  There is so much power in silence, if we're able to slow down and embrace it.  On this episode I talk about the importance of going within and how we can live, work, and relate to others in a mindful and conscious way when we embrace silence.

Let's Be Kind to Ourselves05 Jan 202300:29:59

As the New Year gets underway there is a lot of focus on resolutions, goals, and intentions, which makes sense and can be both important and impactful.  However, what we're usually wanting to experience with whatever healthy practices or desired achievements we focus on is feeling good about ourselves.  And what can often get in the way of our success and fulfillment is being harsh and critical of ourselves.  What if we started with self-kindness and made a commitment to be kind to ourselves, regardless of the circumstance, situation, or outcome?  On this episode, I talk about how important this is and I share some specific techniques for how to accept, appreciate, and have compassion for ourselves.

I agree and am so inspired by him, his work, and his books.  Tyler is an actor, activist, founder of the Tyler Merritt Project, and the author of the remarkable memoir, I Take My Coffee Black, as well as the brand new children's book, A Door Made for Me.  In our wide-ranging conversation, Tyler and I discuss race, religion, inclusion, authenticity, and the importance of proximity.

Embracing Change with Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino13 Sep 202200:49:43

Change may be inevitable, but it definitely can be tricky, especially these days.  Most of us seek and fear change at the same time, which is part of what makes it so complicated to navigate.  On this episode, I talk to my friend and colleague, Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino, about her new book, The Change Guidebook.  Elizabeth shares some specific things we can do to more effectively embrace change and create what we truly want in our work and our life.

Self-Reflection vs. Self-Criticism07 Sep 202200:29:20

Self-reflection is an important and necessary part of growth.  Self-criticism, while common and understandable, is almost always detrimental to us and those around us.  On this episode, I talk about the important difference between self-reflection and self-criticism, why we can sometimes collapse them together, and ways we can truly create positive change.

Trust and Surrender24 Aug 202200:28:17

Trust and surrender are two things that I've found challenging for much of my life.  I've recently been reminded of both the difficulty and importance of both of these…and have been working on embracing them more deliberately.  On this episode, I talk about why trust and surrender can be so hard, especially these days.  I also discuss how essential they are for our own wellbeing, as well as the health and success of our relationships, families, and teams.

The Difference Between Discipline and Vigilance16 Aug 202200:25:05

I've often thought of vigilance as just a more intense version of discipline.  And while there is some truth to this in a practical sense, as I've been unpacking it more for myself recently, I'm now realizing that there's a big difference between these two which is important for us to understand.  On this episode, I talk about this essential distinction and how we can shift from fear-based vigilance to choice-based discipline.

We Are Not Alone02 Aug 202200:29:07

For a number of reasons, especially these days, it's easy to feel like we're alone.  When things get hard, scary, and even painful, many of us, myself included, have a tendency to judge and isolate ourselves.  However, one of the best things we can do when things are challenging (and even when they aren't), is to remember that we're not alone and to reach out to those around us.  On this episode I talk about how easy it is for us to feel alone right now, even though that's not usually the case.  I also offer some specific things we can do to stay connected to one another and to make sure the groups we're a part of are as healthy as possible in this regard.

Helping Parents Cope with Anxiety - TV interview

The Power of Choice28 Jun 202200:28:28

With the United States Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe vs. Wade, I've been feeling angry, sad, and deeply concerned about the impact this decision will have.  I've also been thinking about the importance and power of choice - both in terms of this specific decision and also in terms of how we react to challenging circumstances.  Viktor Frankl famously said, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.  In our response lies our growth and freedom."  On this episode I talk about the difficulty and necessity of this concept right now and how we can choose to respond to what's happening.
