69. Do you really need that extreme deficit?20 Oct 202600:22:48

A lot of people are advised by medical professionals to lose weight. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (and you should follow the advice of your medical professional not a podcast!), but do you really need to diet on 1200 calories to support your hormonal health? Or is it adding more stress?

Let's discuss.

68. Marketing and niching for motherhood... is it necessary? (with Gillian Bennett)13 Oct 202600:25:20

Today I am joined by a very good friend of mine, Gillian Bennett, aka Bite Sized Nutrition. Gillian is a nutrition coach and mentor, who has recently pivoted her niche into coaching and mentoring mothers. I had lots of questions for her, ranging from how to market to mothers without losing your sense of identity, whether we should niche at all and we also chatted about some common fears coaches have when moving niches (or even finding one in the first place!).

Head over to Gillian's podcast for Part 2 where we talk about body image and the ethics of documenting your fat loss journey to get clients...

66. You won't like your body when you lose weight 29 Sep 202600:21:28

As the fitness industry continues its rampant decline into thinly-veiled promotion of fitness as being an ā€œaestheticā€ and not something that can be measured and tested, it’s time to consider what happens if you DO get the dream body you’ve always wanted... and why it won't be enough unless you work on your body image!

64. Protecting adolescents from eating disorders (with Penny Greening from Reframe Voices)14 Sep 202600:53:19

How do we prevent adolescents from getting eating disorders? And how do we approach these conversations without fear of "getting it wrong"? I sat down with Penny Greening from Reframe Voices, a Canadian-based charity aimed at reducing eating disorders in adolescents and beyond, and we had a chat that could have gone on for hours... But we capped it at 50ish minutes of discussions surrounding her journey, sport and ED prevention.

ABOUT PENNY

Canadian-born Penny Greening is a former communications agency director, community mental health advocate and nonprofit founder whose work sits at the intersection of education and social impact.

During the height of the pandemic, Penny became Director of Marketing for premium personal training franchise Innovative Fitness, where she helped promote a whole-person approach to health, fitness and nutrition while raising her teenage daughter.

A breast cancer survivor at 42, Penny also took a hot-minute to compete in three World Natural Bodybuilding Federation shows between 2019 and 2024, moving through Figure, Fitbody and Bodybuilding categories. That experience ultimately revealed some of her own ā€œbest-keptā€ and darkest secrets—what she calls ā€œthe monster.ā€

Penny is now serving her fifth term on the board of Variety – The Children’s Charity of BC. And in 2025, she founded Reframe Voices Society after recognizing a critical gap in public awareness of how and when eating disorders truly begin.

Today, Penny leads a multidisciplinary team of volunteers equipping parents and guardians of school-aged children and teens with the language and practical tools to protect their children’s mental health when it comes to food, feelings and body talk.

62. Is the fitness industry going back to diet culture?31 Aug 202600:31:24

The fitness industry appears to be swinging back towards fat loss, dieting, tracking and transformation marketing - and coaches need to think critically about whether they are following the market or leading it. In today's epsiode I'm going to talk about why everyone seems to be pushing fat loss again - and what to do if you're feeling the pull.

Body image is complex, and there's often no "root cause" for why you struggle to like your body. This is something researchers are aware of, and it's lead to the development of the Tripartite Model of Body Image - a model designed to capture three major influences on body image and how they influence how we feel about our bodies. We delve right into it today!

It’s the era of AI-slop, with people outsourcing their critical thinking and setting the environment on fire just to post about the same fat loss tips we’ve heard since the Bodybuilding.com days. Which is obviously hell enough, but with coaches and mentors now advertising products that rely on generative AI, is there any cause for concern and pause when it comes to using a model trained on weight-normative, diet culture data? (YES)

- Whether aesthetics are always harmful

- Coaching the aesthetically-motivated coaching

- Marketing without aesthetics

You may have heard the latest uproar on social media owing to the return of "heroin chic" and "GLP-1 bodies".

This was immediately used for content by a rake of influencers.

Some virtue-signalling, some actually trying to make a fair point. Swings and roundabouts.

What you say about your body matters - more than you might think. In this episode, we dive into the world of ā€œbody talk,ā€ from self-deprecating fat talk to empowering conversations about what your body can do. We explore why casually tearing ourselves down is normalised, whether it’s really harmless, and how shifting the conversation can reduce body dissatisfaction and fatphobia.

Listen in for insight, laughs (I hope!) and a few ā€œahaā€ moments that might just change the way you talk about yourself with your friends - forever.

Disordered eating (DE) is becoming increasingly common, and anyone with eyes and a working Instagram account can see that we have plenty of reason to suspect that fitness professionals struggle with their relationships with food (see: the inability to post what you eat in a day without also pretty much showing it in transit as you document your physique to the minute).
