Crochet Jobs, Part 1 - Designing18 Feb 202100:49:17

In 2021 we're launching a series about crochet-related jobs (and how to get them). In this episode, we are talking about how crochet employs all types of people in different positions, with a focus on designers.

First up, Heather and Katelyn chat with Producer Sarah about their first jobs. From being a tour guide in a cave or slinging pizzas, to getting paid in candy bars, hear a little about their journeys through employment to their positions now at WeCrochet.

Next, Katelyn walks Heather through the life cycle of developing patterns at WeCrochet, and what kinds of things a contract designer has to do when they work with us. Heather also recommends some must-read articles about how to create a crochet design proposal from Chrisandra Skipper of AndSheLaughsBlog.com.

Finally, Heather continues the discussion with the team from Crochet Foundry again. This time Lorene, Briana, and Pam get into how to communicate when collaborating with a creative team, as well as all the different people (and jobs) involved in making Crochet Foundry magazine a reality.

Finding Crochet Community04 Feb 202100:56:33

In this episode of the WeCrochet Podcast the team focuses on the crochet community. First, Heather, Sara and Katelyn come together for an impromptu healing session when they think about the last year and how it has changed how they look at community. Each has found ways to stay connected in a physically- and socially- distanced world. Thankfully they have crochet to keep them together (and this podcast).

Next, Heather talks to Amber Millard and Lee Sartori from Stitch Together about their online community of monthly Crochet Alongs or CALs. Stitch Together is unique because this team of 8 designers works together to bring dynamic and premium patterns every month. They offer a Crochet Along pattern that they work on together with their global community. Lee and Amber share what they love most about their group.

Lastly Heather checks in with the Crochet Foundry team about their origins and their upcoming spring collection. Briana Kepner, Lorene Eppolite, and Pamela Stark share a passion for crochet, design, and community and design a quarterly collection of size-inclusive crochet garment patterns.

Crochet Joy21 Jan 202100:34:57

Today's episode is all about the joy of crochet! First, Sara and Heather talk about the parts of crochet that bring them the most joy. From choosing colors and yarn to finishing a WIP to sharing the final photo on social media, there's a lot of joy to be found in our hobby.

Next, Producer Sarah chats with Sara about the concept of "sparking joy" from author Marie Kondo's book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Then they talk about ways to increase the joy in your crocheting.

Finally, Heather sits down with Lisa Chayka of HELLOHappy, a crochet designer whose specialty is fun and happy crochet designs such as the Hanging Sloth Planter, Crossbody Fish Bag, and many others. BONUS - WarmTheLine27 Nov 202000:15:31

Welcome to a very special Bonus Episode of the WeCrochet Podcast! If you’re a listener and crocheter here in the United States, you might have noticed we just wrapped up a big election season! But, voting is not over for everyone. The state of Georgia is having a run-off election for two senate seats so everyone who voted in Georgia in November will be voting again on or before January 5th.

Today we are talking to some very special guests working to inspire warmth, connection, creativity and community in voting lines across the country as well as in Georgia. Kathy Mullins and Anne Keith are two crafters that started and work for WarmTheLine, a craftivism project that aims to help share warm items to people waiting in line to vote. While the group started earlier this year and organized over 3000 handmade items to voters during the November elections, they are now focusing their efforts on the upcoming Georgia election and beyond. They are seeking donations of hats, mittens, scarfs, masks and anything that could keep people cozy and safe while in line. Items can be knit, crocheted, weaved or sewed.

If you’re in Georgia The voter registration deadline is December 7. Early voting begins on December 14. For more information about runoff elections, contact your County Registrar's Office.

Warm the Line is hoping to have projects sent by December 5th to get them out to early voters, so get to making!

We have lots of free hat, scarf, or mitten patterns available on crochet.com, and many patterns available for purchase so you can support an independent designer this season. And WarmtheLine is taking donations after December 5th as well, but the earlier you can get them in, the better.

Hooks up, Summer's Here 24 Jun 202100:28:47

School is out; summer is here! On this episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, the team flashes back to some nostalgic memories of high school.

Heather and Katelyn reminisce about who they were in high school and wistfully chat about that feelings of fun and silliness intrinsically tied to more youthful days of their pasts.

Katelyn sits down to talk to Selin Kocalar of Woolly Wishes, a non-profit organization founded by a high schooler, dedicated to using handicrafts to heal Syrian refugee communities affected by war. The activism of Gen Z is an inspiration and, as Selin points out, there is no need to feel limited by youth.

A true student-led organization, Selin details how Woolly Wishes began, accomplishments to date, and ideas for continued outreach in the future. By keeping their donation parameters accessible, Woolly Wishes is able to collect usable goods from a multitude of categories. From hats and scarves to toys and bobbles, they're set to put to use just about everything. While the focus is primarily on providing support to children in refugee communities, Woolly Wishes wont turn away those in need and will gladly provide supplies available to families as well.

Selin and Katelyn discuss the best ways to donate, the most sought-after items, and how those interested can offer support.

Then crochet summer school is in session and Heather, Katelyn and Producer Sarah talk all about the top ways to learn more crochet this summer.

The expertly curated top ten list to Learn More about Crochet this summer includes but is not limited to:

  1. Make a friend, reach out to family and crochet together

Crochet Self Care11 Sep 202000:45:31

What does your self care look like? How long is too long to crochet in one sitting? What's the best ergonomic crochet hook for pencil-grip style of crochet? These are just some of the questions we are answering in this crochet self-care themed WeCrochet Podcast episode.

First, Sara reads a letter from Hannah, who asks all kinds of questions about how to keep crochet pain at bay. Sara and Heather then talk about their self-care practices when it comes to crochet and life. Self care means different things to different people but mostly involves engaging in activities that promote positive well-being and aim reduce stress.

Sara and Heather also field several questions from our crochet community that center around various self-care topics. What's the best ergonomic hook to use and why one designer loves Furls hooks? How can you avoid thread burn on tension fingers? And what's the best posture for crocheting?

Finally, Heather chats with Lisa Valko, an occupational therapist who is also a crocheter, and Lisa gives us tips and tricks for stretching, taking breaks, and keeping your crochet hands limber.

There are so many questions when it comes to crochet. Let us be your crochet friend and guide you through finding the answers. Send us your crochet questions that we can dive into on a later WeCrochet Podcast Episode.

Rage Against Gauge & Able to Cable28 Aug 202000:32:06

In this episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, we're talking about new quarantine hobbies, crochet gauge, and our favorite crochet cable pattern of the Off the Beaten Path collection from WeCrochet Magazine Issue 4.

First, Heather and Sara discuss their new quarantine hobbies. Sara has been getting really into baking and Heather tells about the monster hiding in her shower.

Next, Sara tells Heather everything she wanted to know about crochet gauge but was afraid to ask. Gauge is the number of stitches and the number of rows in a given stitch pattern within a certain number of inches, usually 4 inches. In its simplest form, gauge is just counting and understanding how you crochet. Sara and Heather demystify when it's more important to create a gauge swatch and how to adjust your gauge to for a pattern.

Finally, the two chat about the new all-cables collection in WeCrochet Magazine Issue 4. Cables are a style of crochet (or knitting) in which textures of crossing layers are achieved by rearranging stitches. This collection, Off the Beaten Path, really showcases some exquisite crochet craftship as well as serves to help welcome the cool weather of the fall. Come get inspired to take on one of these projects.

The Art and Business of Crochet31 Jul 202000:44:16

Crochet can be a lot of different things to different people—for some people it's a way to relax and express themselves, while others like to create useful items. Some people turn their crochet into a business (or side-hustle), and of course, crochet can also be celebrated as an Art. Today we talk all about the business and art of crochet with a few people who are experts on these topics.

First up Heather and Sara chat about about their favorite IDP patterns on the WeCrochet website. IDP stands for Independent Designer Partnership and is a small way that WeCrochet aims to help spotlight and support Independent Crochet designers by letting them sell their designs on crochet.com.

Next Heather finds out how to make your finished crocheted goods into a business with Ashley Stallsworth of A Crafty Concept. Ashley talks about her crochet journey and transition into a crochet business owner. She also gives a lot of free business advice. Hot tip—find your niche. Then Sara introduces Tian Connaughton's program to help knit and crochet designers build a profitable business.

Finally, Heather talks to crochet artist Jo Hamilton about how she "paints" with crochet, and how she found her niche as an artist using our favorite medium: yarn! Check out more of Jo Hamilton's art on her website and read more about her work in WeCrochet Magazine Issue 3.

Who's Afraid of Crochet Charts?19 Jun 202000:30:33

On this week's episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, we're diving into the world of crochet tools (what do YOU keep in your project bag?), how to read crochet charts, and a new pattern collection that's inspired by jungle greenery.

First up Sara and Heather talk about what they keep in their Crochet tote bag. While some people, like Heather, have many tote bags, there are essential notions that seem to always find their way into our bags and into our hands when we need them most. We also hear from some of our crochet designers, what they keep in their tote bags.

Next up - You may avoid crochet charts because they seem scary, but Sara and Heather are here to help break it down for you. Reading a crochet chart is like reading a map or reading music because once you know the symbols, you know how to read it. Or, maybe reading a chart is like following a recipe, doing a maze, learning a new dance, or playing a video game. Heather is here with all the analogies that help demystify charts, while Sara teaches us how to actually do it. YOU CAN READ CHARTS!

Lastly Regan and Heather chat about the new WeCrochet pattern collection, Viridescent, which is inspired by jungle greenery. They highlight their favorite patterns, and Regan lets the listeners in on a behind-the-scenes look into what the photoshoot was like for the Viridescent collection.

WeCrochet stands with the Black community working and fighting for systemic change.

WeCrochet is all about crochet, yes. But the “We” is the important part. WeCrochet centers on community and its power to lift one another up, to mentor and encourage one another (in life and in craft), and to hold each other accountable for our actions (or inactions). We’ve been silent and listening over the last couple weeks, and reflecting on the ways we need to change.

We’re a small team and a brand that’s just beginning. We commit to using this platform to amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Color, to increase partnerships with Black designers, technical editors, testers, and Black-owned businesses, to re-examine our hiring processes and the ways we fill roles on the team as we grow, and to work with our community in a constant conversation to hold ourselves accountable to these commitments.

As we continue to crochet, we must continue learning, listening, reflecting, and dismantling systemic racism.  Black craft matters. Black voices matter. BLACK LIVES MATTER!

The WeCrochet Podcast will be back with a new episode next week. This week, we aim to amplify the voices of black creators and crafters. Go check out these other crafty podcasts we know you'll love!

Show Your True Crochet Colors22 May 202000:37:44

Color plays a big part of any craft project. Whether you love picking out the color of your yarns but aren't sure how to use them or you struggle with finding the right color combination for your project, know that you are not alone.

First up Producer Sarah and Heather reminisce about the old days when Producer Sarah and her mom would walk around craft stores getting inspired. Heather loves thinking about what's possible.

Sara and Heather dive deep into colorwork. Sara explains Intarsia vs. Tapestry crochet - What they are and how to do them. Tapestry crochet is the more traditional word people use when they talk about colorwork in crochet. Specifically, it's when someone is using more than one color stitches per row. Some people refer to tapestry crochet as jacquard crochet or fair isle crochet; and Sara helps clarify more about these terms as well as what people mean when they say "float".

Intarsia used when you're working in big blocks of color. So rather than carrying the yarn with you, for intarsia you'll work one ball of yarn for one blocked part of the pattern. Intarsia is used when say, you're working a big heart on a project. Sara also shares the secret to how to change colors smoothly and what tools could be used to help make your colorwork more successful.

WeCrochet Magazine Issue 3 is out! Get your copy today.

Heather and Kerry chat about their strategies to pick out colors for their projects. Choosing colors for a project can be intimating for some people but Kerry suggests staying away from whatever you have around, right in front of you, and instead make color choices that you'll be happy with later. From getting inspiration and Pinning them on Pinterest, to using a Color app, to utilizing contrast, to Kerry's favorite tone-on-tone method, there's something for everyone in their shared experience and advice.

Heather and Toni from TL Yarn Craft extend the color conversation with some extra useful advice.

Call Your Mom08 May 202000:51:40

With Mother's Day around the corner we thought we'd do a special episode of the WeCrochet Podcast and devote our whole episode to the celebration of moms, step-moms, grandmas, mother-figures, mentors, teachers, and all the strong people that have had an impact in our lives in some way! We're sharing stories from our moms, stories about your moms, projects for moms, and more.

First up, Sara talks to her mom, Kay, the lady that got her started on her crochet journey. Grandma Anne taught Mama Kay to crochet when she was kid. Her first project was an endless granny square. Kay has continued to be crafty throughout the years and has even ventured into combining crocheting and needle felting.

Next up, Heather chats with her mom, Kathy, about all things crochet, specifically patterns and projects that have inspired. Having come from a long line of pioneer families, crafts have always been a big part of Kathy's life. Some of Kathy's Crocheted Greatest Hits according to Heather are crocheted Christmas ornament snowflakes, crocheted angel tree topper, and a crocheted vest.

We love our crochet community. We're so happy to hear about all of your moms, step-moms, aunts, grandmas and mother-figures. Our listeners called in to leave a voicemail with stories. Enjoy these great "Mom" stories from our listeners. I'm not crying, you're crying!

Lastly Producer Sarah talks to her mom about her love for crochet! As a left-handed crocheter, Cathy likes to work on projects that are kind of mindless and fun and is a big fan of plant fibers. "Crochet has always been a friend." She recalls.

We close with a word from Sara. One bright part of the weird period we're in has been having the chance to video conference with all of you and meet some of your kids. Many of you have been working hard at WeCrochet, while taking on childcare AND teaching, too. Watching all of you support your kids during these stressful times and handle everything with such grace and determination and kindness has been so inspiring. We're very lucky to work on a team of dedicated, thoughtful, and hard-working women. Happy Mother's Day to our team and to all of you! You are all doing a great job and you are so loved.

Keep crocheting, and we will too! Because WeCrochet!

Time spent at home can be full of mixed emotions. On one hand, it's nice to find time to do your craft and on the other hand you might be finally faced with piles and stacks of all the projects and materials you've put off organizing. Well there's no time like the present, come spring clean with your friends at WeCrochet.

Heather's confession to losing her swift leads Sara and Heather discuss their favorite methods to organize their crochet supplies. Do you organize your yarn by color, by weight or by fiber? Project bags are a great way to stay organized and is only one of many on Sara's list of tips to stay organized.

Heather introduces Regan to Stitch Away Stress, an initiative that the Craft Yarn Counsel is launching for the month of April for Stress Awareness Month. Crochet has been linked to mood improvement, improvement in confidence and concentration, and general stress relief. Regan lets it slip that he has finished his second crocheted sweater (yay) and shares what he has learned and how that has impacted his sense of accomplishment.

What could be more fun than talking to kids, talking about unicorns and crochet? On this week's episode Heather and Sara check in and talk about all the different ways to engage your young person with crochet. Many people are having to stay at home with their children more than they had in the past so hopefully this discussion will help. Heather connects crocheting and doodling in a way that will help ease you into to joys of crocheting at home with others.

Since our team is working from home, we each interview a special guests to talk to us about crochet. First Heather talks to her 10 year old, Gideon, about her job and they brainstorm projects to do at home as a family. Next Producer Sarah chats to her 2 year old, Flower, about her job and crochet. Blooming Spring27 Mar 202000:44:07

It's springtime and on this week's episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, the team talks about spring projects. Even though this spring is like no other that anyone has ever experienced, we are continuing to crochet, connect with others, and find joy.

First Sara has a special message about what is happening in our company. Next Producer Sarah and Heather check in with each other while working from home.

Sara and Heather discuss all the ways to use crocheted flowers. Crocheting lends its self to creating beautiful boutiques but sometimes you need some inspiration on how to use all those flowers.

Some listeners call in, leave a voicemail and say hi.

Regan and Heather answer a question about submitting design proposals. Plus Heather's crochet fail from last week has become a success.

Lastly, Heather interviews Camden on her favorite spring designs for the Blooming Spring Collection. We also get to learn more about what Camden does at WeCrochet and her crochet journey.

Next the WeCrochet team continues to celebrate International Crochet Month by offering an opportunity to receive free issue of WeCrochet Magazine Issue 2. Regan and Heather chat about Regan's second crochet sweater. They also get philosophical about how crochet stitches develop and bread. We listen and share YOUR voicemails!

Slow Living With Crochet28 Feb 202000:46:46

This week the WeCrochet Podcast is inspired by the concept of slow living: a lifestyle emphasizing slower approaches to everyday living, and being intentional about how you spend your time, money, and your life. Crafting has a long history within slow living and crochet has a big role in that. From crocheting baskets, bags and garments, things that are made from hand have a lot of benefits.

Yes, you can crochet a sweater! Sara and Heather share top tips for crocheting sweaters. After asking the crochet community, "what are your crochet resolutions for 2020" many people said that they wanted to crochet a sweater. Sara offers her tips of things to keep in mind as you approach making a crochet sweater.

Next, learn about how our new Upcycle Reserve yarn is made, why it's like the delicious casserole of the yarn world, and get some suggestions on what to crochet with it.

What's new with WCP? Well the WeCrochet Podcast is also gearing up to celebrate National Crochet Month. Find out how you can celebrate with us. We're also wrapping up the Brava Beanie CAL and launching a new Crochet A-Long.

Then Heather talks to Jewel, of Our Maker Life, who tells us about the OML community and gives us her advice for how to embrace the slow living lifestyle.

Last, Heather snags Regan to talk about his experience crocheting his first sweater. They have also renamed the podcast to the Ree Ree and Hey Hey show.

Crochet Jobs, Part 2 - KnotBadBritt's Guide to Crochet Testing27 May 202100:49:56

This episode of the WeCrochet Podcast is all about crochet testing. When designers write a pattern, crochet testers are the first to try their patterns and help shape the final product through their experience making the item, and providing feedback to the designer.

First, Heather and Katelyn talk about what it means to be a test crocheter/sample maker for WeCrochet compared to being a tester for indie designer. Being a tester for indie crochet patterns is more like a serious hobby than a job, but it can definitely open up connections in the community and advance your crochet skills. Katelyn also shares that she use to test for crochet designers.

Next, Heather sits down with Brittany Garber of KnotBadBritt and the Makers of Color Collective to get a comprehensive insider view on being a crochet tester. Brittany shares all about what crochet testing is and isn't, what a good tester does, what a bad testing experience might be like, and what kinds of skills you should have to get involved in crochet testing.

Get Published With Tian10 May 202100:45:04

On Today's episode of the WeCrochet Podcast Heather and Sara check in on their recent projects and Sara interview Tian Connaughton about her latest online course, Get Published.

Sara is continuing her journey to try all the WeCrochet yarns and is currently working with Snuggle Puff and Heather shares everything that she has done wrong in the current WeCrochet Crochet ALong, The Clean Sweep CAL. Sara also shares how WeCrochet and Knit Picks has a long history working with Tian Connaughton.

Next Sara interviews Tian Connaughton, an expert knit and crochet designer, technical editor, author, and course creator. Since leaving the corporate world behind, she's built a business around creativity, craft, and helping women build their own businesses that are profitable and sustainable.

By asserting a goal-oriented attitude, Tian discusses the best ways to keep motivated after rejection and how to avoid taking disappointments personally. She details tricks to get work noticed and steps necessary to take a project from the initial idea to fully published and ready to share.

Tian has developed a brand new video course, Get Published, to help aspiring knit and crochet pattern designers navigate the world of submitting, designing, editing, publishing, and so much more. While the series was developed for all who are interested in publishing pattern designs, the initiative was created specifically to empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) designers to pursue publishing. With a focus of "community over competition," Tian aims to open the door and empower those at any stage of their business.
