Ep 101 | Overcoming Social Anxiety To Put Herself Out There | with Stephanie Bruce03 Sep 202400:54:45

Hello and welcome to episode 101 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Stephanie Bruce.

She’s a digital Designer and Framer/Webflow Developer that worked on OFF GRID & 10X Conference websites.

She has got a great eye for design - you know when you look at premium work and just go GODDAMN.

That’s how I feel whenever I see posts from Stephanie on social of beautiful mock ups and renders.

Speaking of renders, she’s also doing a lot more 3D work too recently being involved in the FlowParty course so excited to chat to her about that and more

She’s freelancing like a boss.

BUT HAS IT BEEN EASY?

The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

1. Poor time underestimating

2. Not appreciating the importance of networking and sharing work

3. Feeling the pressure to keep up with design trends

Ep 100 | 3 Critical Lessons Building Webflow | with Vlad Magdalin30 Jul 202400:57:56

So, for the 100th episode, I decided to get the big guns in, fly to SF and do this bad boy in person with the CEO (at the time) and co-founder of Webflow, Vlad Magdalin.

Vlad came to US as a refugee with his parents from Russia.

He learnt graphic design almost by accident when he worked with his entrepreneurial dad asked him to convert catalogues from english to Russian.

This lead to a job with a company called Russian American media → deepened his interest in graphics and then 3D animation.

At college, he studied computer science but dropped out to go to the academy of art in San Francisco.

The technical aspect of sophisticated 3D and animation tools and feeling like he was getting superpowers really interested Vlad.

He dropped out of art school and got a job at a design agency.

Why can’t web designers design stuff and hit publish to be live on the web just like 3D - render something and it’s live on the screen

As you may have guessed, this spark was the catalyst for Webflow.
Webflow now has over 200,000 users and is over $100 million annual revenue.

And it was an easy ride with no failures whatsoever.

No no no dear Webflailer… it wasn’t quite this easy.

The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

1) Not valuing himself when he went back to freelancing – until a client rejected my invoice for $750 and said that to him the site is worth at least $5k

2) Stopping to work on Webflow in 2008 (for the 3rd time) when there was a trademark issue and I couldn’t use that name – combined with Weebly raising money

3) (Not sure if I can talk about this one publicly yet… noodling on it) Getting too caught up in the no-code hype and trying to do too much (e.g. Logic) before fully nailing the fundamentals (e.g. CMS)

Ep 91 | Don't publish your client's sites without this! | with Isabelle Cuisset28 May 202400:54:47

Hey Webflailers!

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Isabelle Cuisset.

Fascinatingly, her background is in merchandising.

She has an extensive background in the fashion industry, working with major luxury brands such as Burberry, Loewe, and Prada for over two decades.

Moving towards the digital world, she graduated from a ten-month Web Development Bootcamp at TripleTen (ex Practicum by Yandex) in 2021. Driven by her passion, she decided to launch her own web design and development studio.

3 days a week, she’s still in the fashion world and 2 days a week as a Webflower.

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. Failing to realise what you see is not always what you get!
  2. Failing to get content from clients before starting a project
  3. Failing to learn something new every day

Ep 22 | What It Takes To Run An Award Winning Studio | With Mason Poe20 Dec 202200:39:14

Welcome to episode 22 of Webflail. Today’s guest is legendary in the Webflow space, Mason Poe, founder of Edgar Allen Studio.

Edgar Allen won 3 awards this year at Webflow Conf including winning agency of the year - an incredible achievement and it’s easy to see why after listening to their dilligent founder in this interivew. As someone that’s been running his agency for almost 10 years, it’s clear that Mason’s experience gives him a unique insight in to Webflow as a platform and community. Mason talks about all sorts of different topics - how a rising tide lifts all the boats within the Webflow community, how anger is a gift, how Edgar Allen is working to be the tip of the spear for the enterprise market and ambitions for 2023.

The 3 failures we talk about are:

  1. I failed the third grade. it was a painful time in my life, and I spent most of my time under a desk. (literally sitting under my desk) I struggled through school but in some ways I learned a lot about perseverance. (It kind of made me better at sales)

  2. At my last job there was a time I embraced the idea of 'fail harder'... it was a nice motto but it also feed into this idea of hussle culture. Long story short I in the end did fail harder... and was fired from my last job.

  3. When I was first starting my business I was working from 4:00 AM until 11:00 at night. At one point my daughter asked my wife... "is daddy coming over today"

Ep 21 | How To Choose Your Niche As A Webflower | With Emily Giordano13 Dec 202200:44:56

For episode 21, my guest is Emily Giordano.

If you haven’t heard of Emily, why not? She is a Webflow legend. Emily is a huge inspiration to me personally - she is The Great Design Lead podcast host (with over 83 episodes) and aggressively researches guests (so I have gone in researching this episode by the way), she is the founder of Podwork.io for podcasters to find guests and for potential guests to find podcasts to be on, and she is an UX designer and Webflower.

The 3 failures we talk about are:

1) Wanting to be a graphic designer and realizing that wasn't what I was most passionate about

2) Having my first big project go poorly at the copywriting and project transfer stage

3) Leaving a job that wasn't right for me without having another job lined up and being scared shitless for about 3 monthsb

Ep 20 | How To Create A Unique Webflow Portfolio | With Hamish Duncan06 Dec 202200:32:03

For episode 20, my guest is Hamish Duncan. At 16, he became a professional snowboarder but at 22 he broke his back forcing him to rethink his life. After finding a love of storytelling and brand identity design, Hamish eventually set up Penny Black that transforms digital products that move businesses, people and planet forward.

What I love about this episode is the power of being a generalist. Hamish’ attributes some of his success is to do with knowing a little bit about a lot of things but a real depth of knowledge about business needs. Hamish has let all these different interests - photography, wildlife, snowboarding - inspire his design aesthetic and the clients he attracts.

Don’t be a clone is Hamish’ advice - make sure you don’t squash your general interests because it is what makes you truly distinct!

Ep 90 | Why you should ask more questions as Webflower | with Kendra Rainey21 May 202400:55:33

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Kendra Rainey.

She’s the coolest woman I know.

She’s the VP of Strategy of Content at Edgar Allan in Atlanta in the States.

She’s writing a book about branding and a dead simple strategy for people if wondering if branding is bullshit.

She’s a strategist and writer who's been shaping brands and creating creating content for companies big and small for the past decade and a half.

She’s been a freelancer, a big brand-agency strategist and most recently, manage the brand and content strategy practice at a boutique digital product shop

Naturally, failure has been part of her story just like any successful webflower we have on the pod!

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. Failed to launch a career in public education and then failed to be a big-shot NYC agency creative
  2. Being a crappy off-the-cuff performer for a long time
  3. I spent a lot of time failing at appearing confident and assertive in your younger years

However, Maggy wasn’t always a Webflower. Coming from a film background, she used to craft props in the film industry. Maggy says, ‘I transferred my love for building things to designing and developing websites.’

Welcome to Episode 18 of Webflail with Yannick Lorenz (also known as Yaya).

3 years ago, he co-founded the a creative studio called Shadow. Believing it was the way to success and life he wanted, he hired stuff quickly, made up systems and processes as he went along for staff, and said yes to client requests to satisfy their demands. The combination of internal and external pressures almost forced Yaya to close Shadow but he managed to turn it around.

Now, he works on Crème which launched this year which curates opportunities for the world's top Webflow talent.

The three failures Yaya talks about in this episode are:

1. Failing to spot that he was hiring and growing his agency too fast

Welcome to episode 16 of Webflail with Marcelo Russo.

Marcelo is the CEO and Creative Technologist of Fri3nds Agency. Marcelo is an Argentinian computer grad that cut his teeth working for different tech companies before starting his own agency. We'll dig in to this during this episode!

Fun fact - Marcelo is a salsa dancer and met his wife dancing salsa.

The three failures Marcelo talks about in this episode are:

1) Failing to create a unique company

2) Failing to trust his gut with clients and hires.

3) Failing to to prevent his past from defining his present worth

Ep 15 | The Power Of Connecting With The Webflow Community | With Matt Evans25 Oct 202200:42:36

Hello and welcome to episode 15 of Webflail, the podcast dedicated to uncovering the greatest failures behind the greatest Webflowers. Because success often comes after learning from many failures.

I’m your host, Jack Redley, a failure connoisseur and today, my guest is Matt Evans, Webflow Developer & UI Designer for 8020, a global no-code agency. Before this, Matt ran a subscribtion based coffee company and then blagged his way in to a project manager role in advertising. Fascinating story in to Webflow.

The three failures Matt talks about in this episode are:

1) Failing to appreciate that DONE is almost always better than PERFECT.

2) Failing to appoint "admin experts".

3) Failing to make time to speak with other professionals in the Webflow world.

For Episode 14, my guest is Ben Celinski, a Webflow designer and developer based in Ireland.

Ep 13 | How To Feel Energised From Client Work | With Nkenna Amadi & Asmah Mansur-Williams03 Oct 202200:52:50

For Episode 13, my guests today are Nkenna and Asmah.

In this episode we talk about:

1) Not having a website/portfolio to showcase our work early enough which meant clients couldn’t easily access our services and see how we solved similar problems for other brands

2) Not having detailed project agreements that protected us from project mismanagement, overspilling of project scope and payment structure

3) Not having a lead generation strategy to avoid the feast or famine cycle - while we were getting referrals, we weren’t putting any strategy in place to consistently stay fully booked

Ep 12 | How To Hire Webflowers To Build An Agency | With Julian Kreth27 Sep 202200:52:06

For Episode 12, my guest is my guest is Julian Kreth, founder of Agentur 201720, a data driven advertising agency based in Germany.

My favourite part of this episode is about the hiring process. The hiring process is something that we haven’t talked about a lot in Webflail so far despite the fact that it seems to plague a lot of freelancers trying to transition to agency owners. Julian’s process for hiring is enlightening not just for aspiring agency owners but freelancer’s too - by ensuring that hiring process is quite long with over 7 steps, it ensures it is a good fit for the candidate and the agency.

I hope you get as much out of this episode as I did!

The 3 failures we talk about in this episode are:

1) MONEY MANAGEMENT - Founding an event management company that failed after 1 event and what this taught Julian about money and expectations with his agency

2) HANDLING CLIENTS - Giving unlimited reviews to first website clients causing endless frustration

3) HIRING PROCESS - Hiring 6 of the wrong employees in our first year of the agency before working out a hiring process that worked

Ep 11 | Dealing With Imposter Syndrome | With Kaela Williams20 Sep 202200:46:24

For Episode 11, my guest is Kaela Williams the founder of BTB studio, the studio that creates impactful brands and websites for business growth.

Kaela’s honesty about imposter syndrome was the part of this interview that was most thought provoking for me.

At the start of your journey, it’s a struggle. You’re putting in hours in to trying to get clients, learn skills, carefully think about your processes etc and even though you’re putting in tonnes of effort, you may not feel even half as good as other Webflowers that you see on social media. It can be quite debilitating to see people post their amazing work and wins that you are not having.

The 3 failures we talk about in this episode are:

1) Creating Systems In your Business

2) Letting impostor syndrome get in the way of opportunities

3) Not building balance into your week (being a workaholic/perfectionist)

Ep 89 | How to get Webflow clients from Twitter | with Christina Liubynska14 May 202400:53:05

Hello and welcome to episode 89 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Christina Liubynska.

She is constantly juggling different projects.

With Supercharged, she she helps early stage startups by consulting, designing and developing websites that bring them higher profits and happier clients.‍

She also freelances with agencies like Nexus Creative with Dylan Harrocks and with ViDesigns with Vimalam Vijayasekaran.

With Navbar Gallery, she’s building the home to the best navbars on the internet. She’s one of those people that’s a multi-talented but for someone as young as Christina is and as talented as she is, she’s pushed her comfort zone a lot.

Naturally, failure has been part of her story just like any successful webflower we have on the pod!

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. Not building an audience earlier
  2. Wasting a year designing for free for a startup
  3. Not getting any projects or work in nearly a year

Ep 9 | Why Focus Is Key To Getting Clients | With Felix Meens30 Aug 202200:45:57

For Episode 9, my guest is Felix Meens,an experienced digital designer and Webflow developer based in Finland and founder of Webflix Studio.

In this episode we talk about:

  1. Failing to focus on only a key channel to get clients
  2. Failing to stay calm under pressure with clients
  3. Failing to negotiate projects as favours.

One of the biggest mistakes that Felix talked about, and that I made myself as a Webflow freelancer, is to focus on being relentlessly active on every platform and channel to get clients - Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, writing a newsletter, and more.

As Felix says, when you focus your marketing efforts on one of these channels in particular, and become more clued up on how that platform works, you are more likely to get consistent clients. The problem with trying to get clients everywhere is that you will spend hours learning the ins and outs of each platform and becoming a generalist marketer rather than just focussing on one or two platforms to get clients to be a Webflow freelancer.

Ep 8 | How To Communicate With Clients | With Corey Moen22 Aug 202200:55:40

For Episode 8, my guest is Corey Moen, Senior Brand designer at Webflow and Digital Lead at Shapemaker studio. In today’s episode we talk about failing to communicate with clients effectively, failing to get buy in from your team, failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

As we see from this episode, even at Corey’s level, he is not perfect. I find it humbling that despite having worked with clients for over a decade, he is still trying to work out how to communicate as effectively as possible with clients, manage his time well and get buy in from his team.

I think the lesson from this is that even when you are so good at Webflow that Webflow wants to hire you, failures and mistakes still happen. You are constantly learning from these failures and from this, you grow and develop. So, instead of beating yourself up when failures happen, ask yourself what can you learn from them just like Corey has.

Ep 7 | How To Get Your First Clients | With Shais Ahmad15 Aug 202200:37:02

For Episode 7, my guest is Shais Ahmad,  the founder of Pristine Digital. In 400 days, he has grown an agency and now has 5 employees, 20 monthly clients and 8K monthly income.

As with anyone that grows fast though, Shais has made mistakes along the way. These failures were almost catastrophic for Shais but he managed to learn from them quickly and get back on track.

The important lesson from this is episode is that in Shais' experience, cold emailing less effective than freelancer platforms. A lot of people start by cold emailing people to try and get their first client. Do you ever respond to cold outreach? Probably not. Neither does the potential client your emailing. Instead, put time in to practicing the craft. Ensure you have 3 great sites that you can show potential clients. You can even make these cloneables and share them on Webflow which may get you some attention.

Then, go to freelancer platforms and find clients that are already looking for you. Bark, Upwork, Yuno Juno

Ep 6 | How To Grow A Community | With Emily Lonetto08 Aug 202200:43:58

For Episode 6, my guest is Emily Lonetto, the Director Of Community at Webflow, the company which inspired this podcast.

In today’s episode we talk about pushing automations too early, using personal devices for company marketing efforts and the marketing tactics going hideously wrong.

We also discuss how to build a community, building relationships and the imminent plans for Webflow community.

The 3 “fails” she covers:

1) Pushing an automation too early
2) Making a bot that sent free money linked to her personal phone!
3) The lego marketing ploy that went hideously wrong

Ep 5 | How NOT to grow an agency | With Harry Roper01 Aug 202200:40:14

For Episode 5, my guest is Harry Roper, CEO of Imaginary Space. The agency helps companies who are going through a seasonal slump, lack sales being generated from their website, and are looking to move their business forward.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Scaling too fast.
2. Agreeing to work that you can't do. Whether thats budget or just pure skills.
3. Overpromising!

The most interesting part of this episode for me was choosing to transition from freelancing to agency. It's important to freelancing and understand all the different parts of the webdesign process first. A lot of people ask whether they should start an agency or just be a solo freelancer but before asking that question, Harry advocates working out what parts of the client process do you like and dislike.

After working with a few clients, you might realise you dislike the design part of the project but like the development part. If that's the case, potentially finding someone to do the design part of projects would be necessary.

If you hire a freelancer to do this work and you get on well.

For Episode 4, my guest is Jenna Manthe is the founder of Holy Moly Creative Studio based in South Africa. She designing and develops Webflow websites that make you say ‘holy moly’.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Failing to communicate with clients effectively
2) Failing to get buy in from your team
3) Failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

The biggest lesson from this to make a homebase document! Write down your 6 month goals. In today’s episode we talk about failing to communicate with clients effectively, failing to get buy in from your team, failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

Ep 2 | Why Is It Important To Be Authentic | With Dexter Washington30 Jun 202201:14:23

For Episode 2, my guest is Dexter Washigton, founder of Crafted Studio. In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Trying every new strategy I came across versus being myself authentically, posting and talking about the results and letting the work speak for itself.

2) Not vetting people well enough and finding not only someone with good work and strong skills -- but a finding a good personality fit that meshes with our culture.

3) Focusing too much on getting larger clients versus ones with a reasonable deadline, personality fit, and if it's a project we'd actually like to work on.

The biggest lesson from this episode is that the big jobs don't always equal the most satisfaction. There is the most red tape, the most people that have to see the final designs before the project gets signed off, marketing teams to deal with which might derail your designs. It's not all sunshine and roses when you get larger clients basically. Often, people want clients with recognisable logos on their website in order to get more large companies to hire them but is that the rabbit hole you really want to go down? As Dexter mentions, the larger clients can come with a ton of baggage for lack of a better term. Larger clients often get payments late, the timelines are unreasonable, and the list goes on and on.

Ep 1 | Why Hustle Culture Is Bullshit | With Melissa Mendez23 Jun 202200:57:20

For Episode 1, my guest is Melissa Mendez, a web designer and growth marketer based in Orlando Florida.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Financial responsibility
2) Hustle culture
3) Naivity

The biggest lesson for me in this episode is that it's important to understand you can't do everything as a freelancer. There are skillsets that you don't have and frankly there are other people that are specialists in areas of your business you need help in. Investing in your business will prevent you from burning out by trying to do everything. Look in to softwares and tools that will make your business more efficient so you don't waste time on things you don't need to. In addition, invest in people who can help eg. Personal Assistant and possibly an accountant!

Ep 88 | How to get consistent Webflow work | with Stephen Wise07 May 202401:00:08

Hello and welcome to episode 88 of Webflail.

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is Stephen Wise.

He’s a creator and entrepreneur. He started as a freelance web designer but now he does a range of things like writing, making videos, running his agency, DEMAND FLOW.

He’s obsessed with figuring out how we can live better and build profitable internet businesses.

Demandflow is design and development on demand for different subscription packages.

There are now 7 people in the agency despite only launching in 2022.

So, the agency is moving in the right direction and he seems to be managing to maintain a balanced lifestyle too but has it always been rosy?

The failures that we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  • The 3 week project that turned into 3+ years…
  • Ignoring the scary S word… Not running things like a business
  • Focus, Focus, Focus

Ep 87 | How to create a successful side project | with Rob Hope30 Apr 202400:58:42

Episode 87 of the Webflail podcast is with Rob Hope! Yo! Podcast creator, One Page Love Founder and prolific creator with over 15 other projects that were either sold or slowed...

Rob was a freelancer for a decade designing and building websites for clients BUT HE NOTICED A PROBLEM

Clients used adjectives to describe what they wanted for websites but there wasn’t Godly or Landing Love like there is now.

So Rob started collecting website references to show to clients

As you may have guessed, this led to the creation of ONE Page Love. Since 2008, he’s curated over 8,000 single page websites.

Now Rob is a prolific creator.

He’s started dozens of other projects from hosting companies to audio recording apps, to domain names to a Music social network and blog creator called Rock Lifestyle.

Of course, some worked, some didn’t.

One Page love has been far from smooth sailing too. If you are one of the OGs that’s listened to 86 episodes of the pod, you know some of the most successful people have had some of the most epic fails…

The failiures we’ll talk about in this episode are:

1) Starting a hosting company

2) Going all in on one stream of monetization on One Page Love

3) Hiring someone full time when it wasn’t right

Ep 86 | 3 key lessons learnt leading teams at Webflow, Twitter and Cloudflare | with Jess Rosenberg23 Apr 202400:57:53

Today my guest is Jess Rosenberg. Jess is an obscenely talented individual.

Jess is a design & creative leader, designer, manager, ideas person with 18+ years of experience helping brands tell their stories in differentiated and breakthrough ways.

You may know her because she was the director of Brand Design & Creative at Webflow - she scaled Brand Studio team from 8 to 18 in under two years.

She’s worked at Twitter, Cloudflare, Mural, Webflow and her ideas and leadership have influenced many tools and products you use today which is wild.

And she’s just launched a podcast called Ladies Who Create with Liz Meyer which is excellent with guests such as Grace Walker, Jessica Strelioff & Danielle LaRoy and Steph Jeong

Basically, she’s a big deal.

The failures we discuss are:

1) Desiring to be liked by everyone as a manager early on
2) Imposter syndrome
3) Being hands on in the work

Ep 85 | Accenture employees to Webflow Enterprise Agency Founders | with Tim Janes & Dan Foster15 Apr 202400:58:28

Today my guests are Tim Janes and Dan Foster, co-founders of MakeBuild Studio - a design and innovation studio from London in the UK.

Tim’s background as a visual designer and Dan’s background digital designer and UX consultant meant these 2 were a power duo when starting Makebuild 4 years ago.

Though they have designed and built a lotttt of Webflow websites, they have also been experimenting emerging technologies like AR. In fact, recently, they made an AR project with Fruitella - the sweet brand. To help launch a new jelly sweets, they created a world and then select a creature which you could see in your living room on your phone screen.

Makebuild have recently hired Liam Mews and Greg Faulkner so they’re flying high and growing a team but we want to know about how they got here don’t we?!

The failures that we’ll talk about in this episode are:

1) Not scaling up the team early enough

2) Not niching down early enough

3) Not focusing on producing great work

Ep 84 | Getting clients on Upwork to re-building Upwork's website | with Uros Mikic08 Apr 202401:00:43

Today my guest is Uros Mikic. He’s Founder and CEO of Flow Ninja Studio, an award-winning Webflow agency working with clients like Upwork.

Since 2015, they have successfully led more than 100+ Webflow projects worldwide.

He has a team of 40 people and his team is in Serbia. They have products like Data Goat, Six Star App & more

At the 2023 Webflow London meetup, Uros introduced me to Rakia which, I later found out, gives terrible hangovers.

He has a killer YT channel where he shares stories behind building in-house team of 40 people and how you can leverage website strategy and Webflow to grow your digital presence.

But how is he so driven? And what ups and downs has he had on route to success?

The failures we'll talk about in today's episode are:

  1. Scaling the team too fast - track numbers and profitability
  2. Management style - how bad a manager he is
  3. The office - one of ROI

Episode 83 | How to learn by doing Webflow | with Kayleigh Flaherty04 Apr 202400:50:39

Today my guest is Kayleigh Flaherty. She's a Webflow developer located on Long Island, New York. And if you need a reminder who she is, she was part of the killer duo with KC Katalbas for the Slater Game Challenge, obviously.

And she made an incredible game called "Debug," which she was in the top three for that challenge for, but what I'm trying to say is that Kayleigh is extremely talented. And although she's not posting every day on, on Twitter and LinkedIn and stuff, she is doing amazing work every single day.

She's so super, super busy. And in fact, organizing this interview was really hard because she's so busy. She's doing so much work.

She's worked for Blackpeak and Ammo Studio, but she's also got her own individual clients too. She's flying high, but has it always been this way?

The failures that we're going to talk about are:

  1. Learning for too long and not actually jumping into the client work itself
  2. Relying on one agency for work
  3. accounting for her time properly

So, embrace and learn from failure in episode 83 of the podcast with Kayleigh Flaherty

Ep 82 | How have Digidop become the no 1 Webflow agency in France? | with Florian Bodelot26 Mar 202401:07:46

Today my guest is Florian Bodelot.

He is the co-founder of Digidop. He met his co-founder, Thomas Labonne, in school and they thought wow there's an opportunity with the no code space in France. It wasn't so well known so they doubled down on a tool called Webflow which you may have heard of.

And since then, they're like a runaway train. These guys are now a Webflow professional partner, Client First certified. And in 2023, they won professional partner of the year. The rise has been pretty dramatic for Digidop. After translating Client First documentation for FinSuite a couple of years ago, they have seriously leveled up their game, growing a team and doubling down on content creation too. They have their own YouTube channel, TikTok, Instagram. These guys are going in on content, which we'll also talk about today.‍

So has it all no pain au chocolat on their journey to Digidop domination for these frenchmen? Of course not.

The failures that we'll talk about today are:

  1. Believing saying no to clients meant losing opportunities
  2. two, selling features over benefits
  3. forgetting how sport was making Florian a better man.

So, embrace and learn from failure in episode 82 of webflail with Florian

Ep 99 | Running a creative agency successfully | with Tory Howell24 Jul 202401:03:23

Today my guest is Tory Howell.

She's a design leader with seven years experience in product design and marketing design for organizations that make the world a better place.

Now, she has got extensive design experience.

In fact, in 2014, she was a design editor as a student. And since then, she's had various different jobs as graphic design and then product design. 2 years ago, her and her co-founder, Triniti Burton, struck out on their own to create Doorway Creative with.

These guys do strategies, brands, and websites for purpose driven organizations. They are on a mission to empower companies that are creating change for the world.

So they're riding high, but has it been easy? Of course not.

The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. Spending time and money creating a service that no one wanted
  2. Giving a freelancer the wrong job for them
  3. Business partner communication breakdown and conflict

Episode 81 | Results from 100 days of designs | with Erin Fleming19 Mar 202400:54:51

Today my guest is Erin Fleming. Now Erin came to my attention because she was doing the most outrageous challenge. 100 days of posting her work and she was cranking out designs on the daily. From it, she’s gained amost 1000 followers, got a freelance client and gained some friends along the way. She’s now building Storefront.design. The best best Digital Storefronts on the Internet. Period.

Her story is fascinating as you’re about to hear - she left corporate finance to become a digital designer

Were there bumps in the road?! Of course! The failures we'll talk about today are:

  1. Relying only on my partner for feedback on my designs, instead of putting my work out there.
  2. Starting a design & development studio with my partner, and expecting things to fall into place and clients to walk in the door.
  3. After we pivoted the studio to be development only, I gave upon on designing and thought I should focus on my previous skills as an account manager/sales. (Then remembered how much I disliked that.)

Ep 80 | Hardware store worker to web app agency owner | With James Abad15 Mar 202401:05:29

Today, my guest is James Abad. You may know James from making killer work for Black Peak, the team behind Wized that recently got acquired by Finsweet.

He worked there for two years, and in that time, Black Peak went from being a team of three to 20 people. A few months ago, he said goodbye to Blackpeak to follow a new path where he created his own agency with Alier, otherwise known as Ald, Gallardo.

The agency is called Produlis to produce scalable web apps with Webflow.

But although he's had an almighty rise, he's also had some setbacks along the way. The failures that we'll talk about are:

  1. My first project, my nightmare and the best thing that ever happened to me. Four months of work, but no money.
  2. Creating an agency without prior experience of working at one first.
  3. Making work my entire life, all day thinking about it and losing myself in the process.

Ep 79 | Learning to price Webflow projects correctly after over 250+ clients | With John D Saunders05 Mar 202401:06:55

I'm your host, Jack, your failure connoisseur, and today my guest is John D Suanders. Now you’ve probably heard this intro before: What is good y’all, John D Saunders here, you know the vibes. He’s a Web Designer and Founder at 5Four Digital and an Automation Expert with a decade of experience building brands online. Over more than 10 years, agency has worked with 250+ startups so pretty prolific. But what’s possibly most impressive about John is his content creation. He’s done over 150 videos on YouTube amassing more than half a million views and that’s actually where I first came across him. He’s got a course called Agency Growth Accelerator. And this is all while being a dad too.

As you probably know if you listen to this podcast regularly, success comes with some face plants along the way. The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Not charging enough
  2. Not focussing on core services fast enough (Switching just branding, UI/UX)
  3. Not developing systems in the agency soon enough

Ep 78 | How to become a thriving freelance after almost 100 Webflow projects | With Grace Walker27 Feb 202400:52:48

Hello and welcome to episode 78 of Webflail.

Today my guest is Grace Walker. If you’re interested in the Webflow space, you no doubt know her already - she has over six years of design experience and almost years of successful freelancing, she’s launched nearly 100 marketing sites for my clients. She’s a web designer and webflow developer that, besides being known for her clean designs and thoughtfully constructed websites, has an exceptionally pleasing twitter aesthetic. Grace shares glimpses of her minimalist home, nature on her road biking adventures and obviously stunning work. She’s just released her own course called “Fast Forward Freelance course,” for freelancers aspiring to have a thriving freelance practice which includes resources, hours of video content and office hours too.

Life seems pretty rosy. But is that true? And has it been smooth sailing on the journey? he failures we’ll discuss today are:

  • Saying yes to projects because I felt like she “should”
  • Being afraid to break up with clients
  • Not asking for help when I was in over my head

Ep 77 | Up a creek without a paddle when work dried up | With Jeremy Leroux20 Feb 202400:51:12

Today my guest is Jeremy Leroux. You have no doubt seem Jeremy on a livestream. As one third of No code north, a keen visual designer and developer and data base and API integrationer, he’s no slouch in the webflow space. Fascinatingly though, Jeremy has had an unusual path to Webflow development. He came to web design and development form working in the Entertainment industry as a writer / director. He’s also the founder of countryeverywhere which celebratingLGBTQ+, BIPOC, & Disabled Country music communities.

A fascinating podcast ahead. The failures we’ll discuss today are:

  1. undervaluing the work and my skill. Doing free / low paying work for much longer than needed. Eg even up to a year ago I did a free site and after i had put so much work and effort in, the person i built it for a few months later without even letting me know took it down and replaced it with a few links on a page. Glorified linktree.
  2. Building Country Everywhere with a "Field of Dreams" mentality. Where in actuality if you build it they won't necessarily come.
  3. Putting all eggs in one basket. A steady year of work is not a guarantee of another.

Ep 76 | From being fired by clients to creating an enterprise agency | With Jacob Sussman13 Feb 202400:52:42

Today my guest is Jacob Sussman, CEO and co-founder of BX Studio. Now BX studio is interesting - it’s a webflow exclusive agency. They offer custom development, site migration, and ongoing maintenance and support services. Now what’s wild is that the studio launched in January 2022. Since then, BX studio has not only become a webflow enterprise partner, but has also created award winning work with brands in a variety of industries such as Headspace, Zipline and Square Roots. That’s mental health, drones and vertical farming. You may have seen Jacob talk about the most recent Webflow conf, or seen him on Twitter where very active.

As anyone who has seen Taylor Swift’s documentary though, a meterioric rise to fame and fortune doesn’t come without it’s sacrifices and head in hand moments.

  1. Getting fired from one of my first client accounts
  2. Not holding internal team members to reasonable standards
  3. Not hiring project managers at BX Studio for 5 months despite scaling the agency significantly - overwhelming

Ep 75 | Losing 200K to co-founding Relume | With Dan Anisse06 Feb 202400:54:22

Welcome to Episode 75 of Webflail with Daniel Anisse.

As anyone that listens to this podcast knows, Relume originally formed as an agency but since then, Relume has evolved into a product company that provides tools and resources used by thousands of Figma designers & Webflow developers including icons, the component library, the ai site builder and more. However, few people will know that Dan is a man after my own heart - a lover of failure that has tried and failed to kick start over 20 business ideas. I say a lover of failure not from a snarky place at all - it is from a place of deep respect. In fact, Dan wrote an article called “Beautiful Failure,” in which he wrote:

”No one ever achieved anything if they didn’t dare to start. I know… you have failed in the past… BUT remember how you felt when you gave in and got a full-time job — it was one of the worst feelings in the world”

I am extremely excited to dig in to the failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode which are:

1: Losing $200k in a clothing business
2: Failing to kick start over 20 business ideas
3: ‘Almost’ closing Relume Agency (Dec 2020)

Ep 74 | Why choosing the right business partner changes everything for new agencies | With Goodside Studio30 Jan 202400:58:04

Welcome to Episode 74 of Webflail with Goodside Studio.

Today my guests are Danielle Laroy and Jessica Strelioff. These two are long time creative collaborators but came together more formally last year to launch Goodside Studio. The ethos was: "One part visual. One part verbal. Weaving colour, concept, and copy into cohesive brand systems that scale.” Wait what? What does that mean? Well, Jessica is a brand identity designer with over 10 years experience working with the likes of Asana, Yahoo, Google and agencies such as Upperquad, Farm Design and Paladar. Danielle is a wordsmith that has smithed words for the likes of Patagonia, Robinhood and Google. To give you a taste of her wordsmithing, her website homepage says: Strategy with soul, Copy with character, Brands you want to hang out with. Alliteration for the nation.

Has it all been as smooth as the words “copy with character" would suggest though? You guessed it. No it hasn’t.

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. Navigating the pre-commitment phase before we started Goodside
  2. Ignoring orange / red flags in new business calls
  3. Saying yes to projects for the wrong reason (to please others, for money, because it's a big name)
