Opposition View: Man City, with David from The Blue Moon Podcast31 Aug 202400:30:30
Manchester City superfan and radio host David Mooney joins the show this week to preview West Ham’s clash against the champions. Julen Lopetegui is on a roll, guiding the Hammers to two wins in the last two along with back-to-back clean sheets. However, it doesn’t get much tougher than facing City while Erling Haaland is on fire.  Remember, if you love what we do then PLEASE leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 271. A new era has begun but patience is needed27 Aug 202400:59:55
Julen Lopetegui has his first win as West Ham manager. New signings caught the eye, Jarrod Bowen got his first goal with the captain's armband on and West Ham got their first clean sheet since January - against a London rival who James has a particular dislike for. Despite the win being the first in a new era for the club, it was one of the old guard in Tomas Soucek that put in a huge performance in midfield and was again on the scoresheet (even rescuing a ball boy for bonus brownie points). Is about time our criminally underrated Czech Mate gets the credit he deserves? And how long does Konstantinos Mavropanos and Michail Antonio remain in the starting XI amid new boys Jean-Clair Todibo and Niclas Fullkrug pushing for starts? Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 266. Everyone's just given up as the Lopetegui era edges closer06 May 202401:22:56
You didn't need us to tell you how bad it was at the weekend. The 5-0 scoreline says all you need to know. The players appear to have given up and seemingly so has David Moyes as he edges closer to the exit door. And reports this week suggest his replacement will be Julen Lopetegui, who has reportedly agreed terms with the club having rejected both AC Milan and Bayern Munich. Sections of the fanbase say it's an underwhelming appointment but that's propably because the club had everyone believing there was an actual chance of appointing Ruben Amorim, which was obviously never an actual go-er. So this week's episode is mostly about the speculation surrounding our new manager and discussion about what needs to be done this summer in order for us to continue moving forwards as a football club. As always, thanks for listening! Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 201. A very (very) good performance as West Ham successfully put the rubbish out25 Oct 202201:10:59
West Ham's performance in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield was encouraging, or at least that's what James thinks. Will, on the other hand, disagrees and was "angry" with the fact we didn't capitalise on Liverpool's poor form by converting at least one of the eight shots on goal we had. And then there's the win over Bournemouth, which ended up being more straight forward than we were expecting, albeit via a very dubious VAR decision going our way (for once!). Will thought Said Benrahma was once again frustrating in that victory, while James believes it was one of his better performances in claret and blue! What do you think? It's an episode that sees James and Will disagree on most things, which is reminiscent of the old Love Sport Radio days! Also this week, Will catches up with talkSPORT's Toni Afoke to discuss all things Manchester United ahead of our trip to Old Trafford on Sunday. The Silkeborg Opposition View is unfortunately exclusive to YouTube this week, so make sure you head over there on Wednesday for that one! 200. VARy good defending from Southampton's Peter Bankes17 Oct 202202:05:48
Another game and another farcical VAR decision that has cost West Ham points. It wasn't the alleged foul throw that caused anger after the 1-1 draw against Southampton over the weekend, it was referee Peter Bankes clearly obstructing Jarrod Bowen's attempts to defend in the build-up to Southampton's first-half opener. It was clear obstruction, yet the goal stood. That said, should we be looking at the draw as a good point or two points dropped after having 25 attempts at goal, 14 corners and over 60% possession? James and Will discuss all of that and more on this week's show, as well as look back at the win over Anderlecht, before looking ahead to the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday night and Monday night's visit of Bournemouth. Joining us this week on the Opposition View is Liverpool fan Henry Jackson from This Is Anfield and sports journalist Graham Nickless, who covers Bournemouth. 199. The Good Karma Gods are back in Claret & Blue11 Oct 202201:29:02
Finally, the good karma gods were shining down on us as VAR ruled in our favour in the 3-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday. Gianluca Scamacca may or may not have handled the ball before deftly looping the ball over Bernd Leno to put us 2-1 ahead in the second-half, but VAR arguably made the right call by awarding the goal due to it not being a clear and obvious error. Finally, that rule has been used properly! The victory makes it three in three in all competitions and provided further evidence that we're back on the right track, with Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta developing a wonderful relationship that will hopefully help us get back into contention for a top-seven finish. This week, James and Will discuss the win, the performance and all the controversy, including Michail Antonio's handball in the build-up to his goal. And Will is also joined by friend of the show, sports journalist for The Sun and big Southampton fan, Jack Rosser to chat all things Saints ahead of our trip to St. Mary's. 198. Losing to West Ham is too embarrassing for Wolves03 Oct 202201:47:13
It turns out losing to West Ham was just too embarrassing for the Wolves that they decided to sack Bruno Lage just 24 hours later. It was a big, confidence-boosting win on Saturday. Not just for the entire squad but for Guianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen in particular as they both opened their Premier League accounts for the season. Now we embark on a busy October, starting with Anderlecht away in the Europa Conference League this Thursday before welcoming Fulham to London Stadium on Sunday. This week, James and Will give their views on the win at the weekend before looking ahead to our next couple of fixtures. Will chats to Scott Coyne from the Belgian Football Podcast ahead of Thursday night before he's then joined by talkSPORT's Harry Durham to chat all things Fulham. 197. Hopeless England [West Ham] relegated by Italy [Wigan]27 Sep 202201:21:33
International breaks rarely fill fans with excitement and joy and this one was true to form as England were RELEGATED from their Nations League group after a 1-0 defeat in Italy. Flashbacks of relegations at the hands of Birmingham and Wigan were rife amongst the Hammers fanbase as the painful experience of relegation returned for many of us. But all is not lost. Mark Noble has returned to the club as Sporting Director, presumably to save the day. His first job will be to get back in that dressing room and remind everyone what playing for West Ham means because it appears many have forgotten since Mr. West Ham's retirement. The lads also look ahead to this Saturday's visit of Wolves and James catches up with sports broadcaster and big Wolves fan, Will Lewis, who gives his thoughts on their season so far. Spoiler alert: it's pretty much identical to ours! It's a bit of a shorter episode this week due to not having any games to look back on and with just one to look ahead to, but at least you do get to hear about Will's recent grocery shopping experience. 196. Are two seasons of fun all we're gonna get at West Ham?19 Sep 202201:26:21
Is this the beginning of the end for David Moyes at West Ham? We certainly hope not, but after two incredibly fun seasons since his return, we started this season with just one win from seven Premier League games and have only scored three goals. Yes, we're unbeaten in the Europa Conference League but that's not really the issue here. Moyes' stubborn team selections, strange substitutions and reluctance to give most of the summer signings more than 30 minutes a game in the league is beginning to frustrate the fanbase; not least James Jones, who appears to have been broken by this latest defeat. This week, Will is far more positive than James as the conversation covers Tomas Soucek's role in this current team, reasons for dropping Jarrod Bowen, worries about the Gianluca Scamacca signing, questions over the level of summer spending if the new players aren't going to be used and so much more! The lads also discuss the win against Silkeborg in the Europa Conference League and ponder Moyes' future in east London. As always it's a brilliant show, if not a little bit heated this week after what's happened over the last few days! 195. A touching tribute to Queen Elizabeth II13 Sep 202201:43:37
It has been a terribly sad and emotional past few days, not just in the United Kingdom but across the world. The passing of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday was tough to take for so many. To those who adored her the most, she was an incredible woman who represented a beacon of hope and happiness throughout her 70 years on the throne. Her passing was confirmed just a couple of hours before West Ham were due to host FCSB in the Europa Conference League, but it was decided the game would still be played. What followed was a moment that will be remembered by all who were in attendance; in what had initially been planned as a minute's silence to remember the Queen before kick-off, fans in attendance instead decided to honour her memory by belting out the national anthem. It was a hair-tingling moment of emotion and respect, which earned West Ham fans the respect and plaudits of neutrals from all over the world as a result. A touching tribute to Her Majesty. On this week's show, James and Will spend much of it reflecting on the events of the last few days as they try to process the magnitude of what's happened, while also looking back on the 3-1 victory over FCSB. Will then has a chat with Football In Denmark's Henry Nicholls for the third time this season as they preview Thursday's trip to Silkeborg, while James previews the visit to Everton with GiveMeSport's Ethan Maddison. 194. Absolutely VARcicle05 Sep 202201:43:05
We've all seen it. We all know it was a complete and utter disgrace. But where do we go from here? VAR's existence in the Premier League is becoming more and more laughable with each passing weekend, and the last few days have arguably been its most comical. It wasn't just us who were robbed though, as Newcastle, Everton and Arsenal can all feel cheated by the very thing that is supposed to prevent controversial and incorrect decisions being made by referees in the modern era. On this week's show, James and Will discuss the situation in detail before looking ahead to this week's games with FCSB in the Conference League and Sunday's visit of Newcastle. We also have a double-header Oppostion View this week as Horia and Filip from the Romanian Football Platform join us to preview Thursday's Conference League clash at London Stadium before Will catches up with The Athletic's Newcastle Correspondent, Chis Waugh, to chat all things Newcastle before Sunday. As always it's a brilliant show, if not a little bit heated this week after what's happened over the last few days! 193. Our season starts now! (or maybe after Spurs and Chelsea)30 Aug 202201:46:54
Finally we're off the mark! Our first win and first goal of the Premier League season came at Villa Park on Sunday but, had Steven Gerrard's team been a bit better than they are, it could've been a completely different story. David Moyes opted to start with five at the back but following a turgid opening 45 minutes, he decided to revert to the tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation and suddenly things began to happen. Said Benrahma came on at half-time and instantly gave us some energy and intent going forward, and eventually Pablo Forbals expertly directed the winner over Emi Martinez's head, via a Villa defender's knee. Absolute genius finish! Now we're off the mark it feels like our season starts now, but we have Spurs and Chelsea next to threaten us building up any kind of momentum. This week, James and Will react to the win at Villa as well as discuss our Europa Conference League draw, which includes us coming up against Anderlecht, Silkeborg and FCSB in Group B this season. Also on the show, Will chats to Spurs fan and talkSPORT presenter Paul Coyte ahead of Wednesday night's huge game in Stratford, as well as broadcaster Tom Sheen about Chelsea ahead of Saturday afternoon's trip to Stamford Bridge. 192. Moyes' Men go Missing against Boring Bogey Brighton (again!)23 Aug 202201:23:26
Once again we've failed to beat our bogey team, Brighton & Hove Albion. Not only that, we were comfortably beaten by them at home to make it three defeats from three without scoring at the beginning of this new Premier League season. It's getting a bit boring now, isn't it? David Moyes' players practically went missing on Sunday and have now left us rock-bottom of the Premier League - how depressing! But last week we did pick up our first win of the season in the Europa Conference League as we beat Danish outfit Viborg FF 3-1 to take a relatively comfortable lead into this Thursday's second-leg. We're once again joined by Henry Nicholls from Denmark in Football to get his view on the first-leg and how he sees the second playing out in Denmark. Also this week, we're treated to a very special voice note from friend of the show Tim Warwood, who gave us his views ahead of West Ham's trip to Villa on Sunday, while Will from the Talk of the Trinity podcast also dials in for a chat about his beloved Villa. Lots to chat about in this one as James and Will try and dissect how Brighton have tragically become our bogey team. 265. How much time will the rebuild be given?30 Apr 202401:11:38
It's generally accepted that David Moyes is nearing the end of what has been a wonderful four year tenure as manager of West Ham. But whoever his replacement is, how much time will he be given to rebuild? As one era ends, another begins, but this new era will have to begin with a whole rebuild of the squad and a new tactical philosophy coached into them. It will take time, arguably longer than a single season, and will likely need at least 3-4 transfer windows for the new manager to bring in the right players to be effective in implementing his footprint on the club. But will he get that long? Will the fans be patient enough? What signs will need to be there for fans to sit tight and accept it needs time, not more change at the first sign of trouble? The last thing the club needs is a run of constantly changing the manager until one comes in, hits the ground running and provides immediate success. The likelihood is it won't happen like that. We're probably looking at a transitional season where we finish between 10th-13th, before signs of real progress kick in. But will fans accept that after the previous four years of success, delivered to them by the very manager many of them want to see the back of? That's all discussed and more on this week's pod! As always, thanks for listening! Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 191. Rob is banished from the Jones family - feat. Ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey15 Aug 202201:41:28
Sometimes it's just not your day, and that was definitely the case on Sunday as we lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. An unfairly disallowed goal, missed penalty, wrong decision not to send off a Forest defender and hitting the woodwork three times? Yeah, it just wasn't our day. James and Will give their views on all the big talking points from Sunday's defeat while we're also joined by ex-Premier League referee Mark Halsey, who gave his verdict on all the big refereeing decisions in the game. Also on the show, James officially removes referee Rob Jones from the Jones family, the boys are joined by Henry Nicholls from Football In Denmark to help preview our Europa Conference League qualifier against Viborg on Thursday and Brighton fan Jeremiah dials in to give us his view on Sunday's Premier League clash at London Stadium. 190. From one curse to another as Diop downs tools08 Aug 202201:16:15
The lads return this week to look back at the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening weekend of the 22/23 Premier League season, after Erling Halland made very easy work of our makeshift defence. We appear to have gone from being a club with a striker curse to one with a defender curse as David Moyes was forced to pair Ben Johnson with Kurt Zouma at the back after Craig Dawson was ruled out with a thigh strain and Issa Diop supposedly refused to play ahead of his reported move to Fulham. Still, a 2-0 scoreline is a respectable one when you consider the circumstances and the huge gap in class between ourselves and Pep Guardiola's squad of superstars. Also this week, the lads are joined by Graeme Bryce, Midlands Football Correspondent at The Sun, to get the lowdown on Nottingham Forest ahead of next weekend, while the lads also ponder what Moyes might decide to do in the final weeks of the transfer window, especially given the continued lack of depth in some key areas of the squad. 189. Getting inked like Scamacca ahead of battle with fellow marquee attacker01 Aug 202201:09:04
West Ham's pre-season is done and now we can finally look ahead to Sunday's first game of the season against Premier League champions Manchester City. The squad is no where near ready, with at least four new faces required before we can truly say we've fully strengthened this summer, but at least we can finally look forward to welcoming meaningful football back into our lives. On this week's show, our first proper one of the 22/23 campaign, James and Will mostly look ahead to the City clash and are joined by friend of the show and 93:20 Podcast's very own Ste Tudor, who was equally as pessimistic as we are ahead of the weekend. Ste admits City are not yet up to full speed from a fitness point of view and will need to iron out potential issues with Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, who are clearly yet to land on the same page judging by Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Liverpool. Also on this week's show, James reveals he's getting his first tattoos at the age of 34 and Will accuses him of going through an early mid-life crisis, while following last week's admission that he absolutely hates Tennis, Will reveals he's been playing Tennis with a mate. Confusing! As always, it's a great show with lots to discuss and we've also managed to keep our promise of a more streamlined show - hopefully we can stick to it as the season goes on! 188. We're BACK! Third degree burns, pre-season panic & transfer hysteria25 Jul 202201:18:02
After over a month off to recharge their batteries, James and Will are back to get the We Are West Ham Podcast underway for the new season. Having missed out on a huge chunk of the summer, the lads catch up with some obligatory mundane chat, including James' story how he managed to get third-degree burns on a stag do in Spain and Will's hatred of proper tennis but love for the exhibition type. Then the real discussion begins, as the lads discuss pre-season so far and, of course, all the latest transfer rumours - it appears we're about to end a three-year wait for a striker signing! Despite the season being less than two weeks away, there's loads to discuss this week, including the decision to streamline the podcast format a little bit. All of the above and so much more in this week's episode. We're delighted to back in your ears and hopefully the feeling is mutual! Come on you Irons! 187: 21/22 End of Season REVIEW - West Ham memories to last a lifetime! 20 Jun 202202:17:51
First of all, sorry we're late! We recorded this episode way back on the 31st May but since then, life's got in the way a little bit. We've both been on holidays and work has been a bit mental for the both of us - it is the beginning of the transfer window after all. But we're finally bringing you our annual season review, where we break down everything that happened throughout what eventually turned into one of the most memorable seasons of our lifetimes. That run to the Europa League semi-final will never be forgotten, beating the likes of Sevilla and Lyon along the way - that night in Lyon will be hart to beat, won't it!? But then the fact we still finished 7th in the Premier League, despite not signing anyone in January and going so deep in Europe, must not be sniffed at. So in this episode, we take a walk down memory lane, beginning all the way back in August when we kicked off the season by thrashing Newcastle at St. James' Park. There were some low points along the way (we wouldn't be West Ham without them), but mostly it's just a jolly good chat about all the great things we got to experience. We also take some time to thank every single one of you, especially those who have engaged with us both on social media throughout the season and who have kindly bought us beers via donations on Buy Me A Beer. We are so grateful for every single one of you - thank you! And then we finish off a review of our Betway Charity Bets, with final totals from all of us as we took our two-season fundraising to over £20k! Remember, we recorded this at the end of May so much of the intro is a little out of date, but it's still worth listening anyway. Obviously! From the bottom of our hearts, thanks so much for listening this season and for all the kind and supportive messages. We love you all. Will & James xx   Come on you Irons. The Brighton opposition view will be uploaded separately later this week.   You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. 186: A Noble departure before Brighton18 May 202201:28:42
West Ham’s home fans bid an emotional farewell to club legend Mark Noble on Sunday on the same day the Irons earned an excellent point against champions in waiting Man City. Jarrod Bowen scored a fantastic brace to cap of an excellent campaign before Jack Grealish and a Vladimir Coufal own-goal saw City level. Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a brilliant save to deny Riyad Mahrez from the penalty spot late on to deliver a result and a performance to match the emotion of the occasion as Noble said goodbye to the West Ham faithful for a final time as a player. Will Pugh and James Jones are back for the final normal format podcast of the season to chat all things Noble, City and much more. The lads celebrate another Betway charity bet win before making their final picks of the season for the Seagulls game. Before the boys say goodbye for the penultimate time this season. From the bottom of our hearts, thanks so much for listening this season and for all the kind and supportive messages. We love you all. Will & James xx   Come on you Irons. 184: Opposition View: Manchester City, with Stephen Tudor from the 93:20 Podcast13 May 202200:28:09
Just like last week, things have been a bit up the air for myself and Will but we couldn't go a week without bringing you the Opposition View. This week, we host Manchester City in a game with so much riding on it for both clubs. Victory for us will all but guarantee European football again next season and will put us in a great position to leapfrog Man United into the top six. For City, three points will all but guarantee them yet another Premier League title. And then there's the not-so-small matter of Mark Noble's last home game before he retires next week. It's going to be an emotional one and we will of course give him a wonderful send-off. Joining James on the Opposition View this week is friend of the show Stephen Tudor, from the 93:20 Podcast, to chat all things Man City. Ste gives his views on the title race, City's new-found rivalry with Liverpool, the bargain capture of Erling Haaland, how thinks Sunday's clash will go and much, much more! 182: It's the Eintracht countdown!03 May 202201:58:05
West Ham lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal on Sunday. It came after a Europa League semi-final first leg defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt at London Stadium last Thursday. But Will Pugh and James Jones refuse to be downbeat ahead of Thursday’s massive second leg in Germany. The excitement is palpable as Will prepares to head to Frankfurt and the lads also let themselves imagine what it might be like to see Mark Noble and Declan Rice lift the trophy. The boys look back to the last two games as well as looking ahead to Thursday v Frankfurt and the Premier League visit to Norwich on Sunday. The lads also make their Betway charity bet selections ahead of the Carrow Road clash. Before TalkSPORT’s Jake Watson joins to give the lowdown from the relegated Norwich camp and chat about joining Will on a recent 'live like a Premier League player day' at Chadwell Heath thanks to Betway. Will and James wrap up by looking back at West Ham Women’s 3-0 WSL defeat at Man Utd before they say goodbye at the beginning of another enthralling week for West Ham United. History has already been made and the mindblowing journey continues Thursday night. Drink it in. 264. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened23 Apr 202401:15:14
Supporting West Ham is never dull, you can always be sure of that. In the space of just a few days our wonderful club came to within minutes of becoming the first team to beat Bayer Leverkusen this season, after putting in one of the best performances in the modern era, and then put in one of the worst performances in the modern era by losing 5-2 to Crystal Palace, having been 4-0 down after just 31 minutes. As a result of being knocked out of the Europa League and losing so heavily at Selhurst Park, it's looking more and more likely that Moyes will leave the club once the season is over. Although no official confirmation has been made yet, we're already hearing reports of meetings with potential replacements being had, including Liverpool target Ruben Amorim and former Real Madrid, Sevilla and Wolves boss, Julen Lopetegui. So this week, the lads talk through why Moyes' time is likely up, who they think should replace them and give their thoughts on the very chalk and cheese performances against Leverkusen and Crystal Palace. As always, thanks for listening! Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 181: Who else has got a (European) semi? - ft Eintracht Frankfurt oppo view26 Apr 202201:47:47
West Ham lost 1-0 at Chelsea on Sunday in oh so frustrating fashion. Craig Dawson was sent off as he gave away a late penalty which Jorginho missed before Christian Pulisic bagged the winner at Stamford Bridge. But do Hammers fans really care with a Europa League semi-final first-leg against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night? Will Pugh certainly doesn’t on this week’s pod but James Jones is far more conservative.  Bastian Roth from the Eintracht podcast dials in to give an opposition view ahead of the mammoth clash. The lads make their Betway charity bet selections ahead of Sunday’s home Premier League game against Arsenal. Before Dan Cutts, SunSport editor and huge Gooner, joins to give another lowdown from the opposition camp. Will and James wrap up by congratulating West Ham’s Women on a great WSL win at Reading before they say goodbye at the beginning of another enthralling week for West Ham United. 180: WE'RE GOING TO GERMANY, QUE SERA SERA! - Lyon reaction & Chelsea view19 Apr 202201:38:39
West Ham United Football Club are in the semi-finals of the flipping Europa League! It was 1976 the last time this flipping glorious amazing wonderful club hit such heights and thanks to David Moyes and his mighty fine men, we have made it there again. West Ham's 3-0 win in Lyon was one of the most magical, wonderful, amazing, emotional nights in many fans' lives and that much is certainly true of We Are West Ham hosts Will Pugh and James Jones. The lads made their way to Lyon and sung and cheered their hearts out with the rest of the claret and blue army in the upper tier of the Groupama Stadium and will never forget it for the rest of their lives. Will and James chat all of that and more having returned tired but happy last week. The 1-1 Burnley draw gets a brief covering before friend of the show Stamford Chidge joins to chat all things Chelsea ahead of Sunday's trip to Stamford Bridge. The boys make their Betway charity bets after avoiding any winners in the Burnley game. West Ham Women's 4-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Man City gets discussed before the lads say goodbye after one of the most amazing weeks in the club's history. Eintracht Frankfurt await and then who knows beyond that. Drink all of this in. It's magical.   Come on you Irons. You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 178: Unlucky Lamps & Bonjour Lyon ft. Tony Carr05 Apr 202202:04:26
West Ham returned from the international break with a bang as they saw of Everton 2-1 at the London Stadium. Poor old Frank Lampard. Aaron Cresswell's delightful free-kick opened proceedings, Mason Holgate equalised before Jarrod Bowen bounced back from his injury with the winner. Michael Keane was sent off and the Hammers wrapped it up. Will Pugh and James Jones discuss that and Thursday's huge Europa League quarter-final home leg against Lyon. The lads make their Betway charity bet selections. And SunSport journalist Giacomo Pisa also dials in to look ahead to Sunday's Premier League clash at Brentford. West Ham's legendary former academy director Tony Carr talks about his new book: A Lifetime in Football at West Ham United. And then the lads say goodbye before heading to Lyon in person next week. 177: Historic Sevilla win, Spurs defeat, Lyon here we come!24 Mar 202201:11:50
West Ham United beat Sevilla 2-0 at home to win 2-1 on aggregate to reach the Europa League quarter-finals in one of the most historic iconic nights the London Stadium has seen. Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko scored to inflict Europa League giants Sevilla's first defeat by an English team ever in the competition. It was magical and the atmosphere cemented London Stadium's place as our home. What a night. Will Pugh and James Jones wax lyrical about one of the greatest nights in the club's history. They also briefly touch on the defeat at Spurs, which doesn't really matter, and review the Betway charity bets. And then get excited about the QF draw against Lyon - with the boys set to attend both legs. West Ham Women are also through to the FA Cup semi-finals after a 1-0 win at Ipswich and will face Man City at home. All the above and much more on this week's episode. Get it in your ears! 176: Sunny Seville, Surprises and Spurs16 Mar 202201:26:45
The least we were hoping for ahead of last week's Europa League clash in Seville was to still be in it when we welcome the La Liga giants to London Stadium this week. A 1-0 defeat to Sevilla means we have a huge opportunity to make history at London Stadium and secure our place in the Europa League quarter-finals this week! As you all probably know by now, Will spent much of last week in Seville, soaking up the sun, sinking plenty of beers and simply enjoying the atmosphere as West Ham put on an encouraging performance against the Europa League's most successful clubs. David Moyes' men did themselves and the fans proud and now, this Thursday night, we might be on the verge of witnessing something we've never, ever seen before! And then on Sunday, in what was a somewhat surprising performance and result, West Ham beat Aston Villa 2-1 at London Stadium to boost our chances of a second consecutive top-six finish. On this week's show, the lads chat to Sevilla employee James Dowden ahead of that huge game on Thursday night, preview the victory over Steven Gerrard's cry babies, look ahead to Sunday's trip to Spurs, pick their Betway charity bets, look back at West Ham Women's 1-0 win over rock-bottom Birmingham City and, of course, praise Andriy Yarmolenko's ability to get into the right mindset to come off the bench and score in the Premier League during what must be an incredibly difficult, emotional and painful time for him and his family. All the above and much more on this week's episode. Get it in your ears! Come on you Irons. You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. 175: LIVE FROM SEVILLE!08 Mar 202202:11:04
West Ham United play away at Sevilla on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie. For many fans around the world that may seem a trivial, even boring achievement. Not for West Ham. For true supporters of West Ham United, those who have endured so much, for so long, Thursday's game represents something they have for decades deserved. For the years under Allardyce and Grant, the heartbroken days where we were torn away from Upton Park against our will, the shite transfer windows, the empty promises and the seemingly endless tripe about how next season will be better. It is finally better. We were promised this. We deserve this. Never forget that. The outcome is unknown. And if we progress to the last eight, we at the We Are West Ham podcast will express similar sentiments again. And if we are knocked out, we should lap these days up before demanding our club gets here again. It is our love, our passion, our belief, our long-term, long suffering support and our money which has made this club what it is. Enjoy these moments, because it's the very least we are due. Huge credit to David Moyes for getting us this far and giving us a club we can be proud of. Long live David Moyes. And Long live West Ham. Come on you Irons. 174: We're going to Seville!01 Mar 202201:44:39
After a month or so of mediocre performances and signs that West Ham's top-six challenge might be on the verge of collapse, things are suddenly looking promising again. Last week's Europa League draw saw us matched with LaLiga giants Sevilla in the last-16 and then we secured a huge win over top-six rivals Wolves at London Stadium on Sunday.  The draw is literally the stuff of dreams.  No one could've imaged we'd be preparing to face six-time Europa League champions Sevilla in the last 16 of the competition just two years ago when David Moyes returned to the club.  Now, West Ham are not only making that a reality but we're also battling for consecutive top-six finishes in the Premier League. It's incredible.  Despite being off the boil over the last month or so, there are signs that this season still might have a really happy ending but the next seven days are going to be crucial to that.  On Wednesday we travel to St. Mary's Stadium to face Southampton in the FA Cup 5th round, and then on Saturday, we visit Anfield, where we've won just once in the last 59 years.  On this week's show, James Jones and Will Pugh discuss the Sevilla draw, the win over Wolves and also look ahead to this week's fixtures against Southampton and Liverpool. Also this week, we're joined by Saints fan and sports journalist James Beavis to preview the FA Cup clash and then Red Men TV's Ste Hoare to get the lowdown on all things Liverpool. Finally, we talk through our Betway Charity bets, react to West Ham Women's FA Cup victory over Reading and much, much more! 173: Wheels falling off (but the shed stands strong)22 Feb 202201:06:40
West Ham United could only draw 1-1 with Newcastle on Saturday as the wheels continue to fall off after a promising start to the season. Craig Dawson continued to be the Hammers’ biggest goal threat but Joe ‘loves a goal against West Ham’ Willock levelled for the struggling visitors.  Will Pugh is joined by James Jones to look back at another disappointing home performance as West Ham’s top-four hopes were all but distinguished.  However, it’s not all doom and gloom as the lads pulled in ANOTHER Betway charity bet winner! Dan Baylis from the Wolves 77 club podcast dials in to look ahead to Bruno Lage’s side visit to London Stadium on Sunday.  And then, with no West Ham Women game, the lads say goodbye for another week with some final thoughts. 172: Leicest we forget Issa Diop17 Feb 202201:17:46
This week saw West Ham finally started to escape from the shadow of the Kurt Zouma cat-kicking shame. No thanks to Will Pugh and James Jones of course who spent much of the previous week on national TV and radio stations discussing the topic.  And on the pitch it didn’t get much better, in fact it got worse. Another sloppy performance at Leicester saw the Hammers needing a late Craig Dawson elbowed equaliser to rescue a point. The boys react to the game but Will in particular remained in a good mood after he WON A BETWAY CHARITY BET to pull in a HUGE sum for the Bobby Moore Fund! The lads also make their next selections. Newcastle United editor from the Newcastle Chronicle Aaron Stokes dials in to look ahead to Saturday’s match against the Magpies at the London Stadium.  Will tackles the West Ham Women’s surprising defeat at Leicester City on his own. And then the lads say goodbye for another week with some final thoughts. Opposition View: "West Ham's lack of effort surprised me!" - Bayer Leverkusen (2nd leg), with Kevin Scheuren17 Apr 202400:47:35
After a really great chat with Bayer Leverkusen fan and podcaster, Kevin Scheuren, in Germany last week, Will caught up with him once again ahead of Thursday's second-leg at London Stadium. Despite defending admirably for 85 minutes in the first-leg, Leverkusen's two late goals means we have a huge mountain to climb on Thursday if we're going to secure a place in the Europa League semi-final. Kevin said last week that Leverkusen were going to beat the crap out of West Ham in the first-leg and he was pretty much correct in his prediction. While it wasn't a thrashing by any means, their 33 shots to our one says all you need to know about how the game played out. A repeat cannot happen this week and Kevin has urged David Moyes and West Ham to be braver in their attempts to become the first team to beat Xabi Alonso's side in any competition this season, after he was surprised at our lack of effort in trying to score a goal in the first-leg. Once again, this is a great chat with Kevin, who has been a superb guest on the podcast over the last week. And finally, congratulations to Kevin and Bayer Leverkusen for being crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history. What an unbelievable achievement! Come on you Irons! 171: Zouma debacle with Kiddy, Watford & Leicester11 Feb 202201:25:05
It was just another week at 'same ol' West Ham', wasn't it?  It started with Declan Rice having to come off the bench to save us from the biggest upset in FA Cup history against sixth-tier Kidderminster Harriers. And it ended with an underwhelming 1-0 victory over Watford at home. In between, we had the not-so-small matter of Kurt Zouma drop-kicking and slapping his cat. The decision to play Zouma against Watford 24 hours after said cat video emerged on social media led to widespread outrage from the general public, which was understandable.  David Moyes fluffed his lines when pressed on the matter after the game by describing it as a footballing decision, while some club sponsors moved to disassociate themselves with the club.  All in all, it was a complete and utter car crash and unfortunately, we probably haven't heard the last of it just yet. Back on the football pitch, West Ham are back in the top-four after Tuesday's win and have a chance to keep that Champions League qualification flame flicking for a little bit longer with a win against Leicester City on Sunday.  Trouble is, so many teams have games in hand on us that finishing in the top four is currently out of our hands.  All we can do is keep winning, and what better place to continue that than Leicester, who have been shipping goals for fun and seem like a club in disarray after Brendan Rodgers publicly questioned his players' commitment last weekend.  Friend of the show and big Leicester fan, TalkSPORT's Jake Watson, joined us this week to preview this game at the King Power. Also on this week's show, Will Pugh and Jame James Jones give their thoughts on the Zouma story, discuss the Hammers' near miss in the FA Cup, make their Betway charity bet selections, hail West Ham Women for yet another WSL victory and much more! 170: RIP Isla, transfer fury & Harriers view03 Feb 202201:22:08
West Ham fans around the world were heartbroken to learn of Isla Caton's passing last week as supporters from many clubs came together to pay tribute to the little princess. Her brave battle, along with her mum Nikki and the rest of Isla's family, against neuroblastoma over the past few years has captured the hearts and minds of the fanbase and produced some heartwarming and inspiring stories. Isla may no longer be with us in body, but she will stay with us in our minds and in our hearts for decades to come as her astounding legacy will outlive most of the people reading / listening to this. Will Pugh and James Jones start the show with a tribute to Super Isla and her family and send all the love and support they can. Such an incident puts life into perspective and that's what the boys cling onto in the second part of the show as they discuss West Ham's complete lack of transfer activity, who is to blame and where that leaves the club. The Hammers return to match action this weekend in the FA Cup Fourth Round away at Kidderminster Harriers, and lifelong Harriers fan Nick Haycox dials in to look ahead to the clash. The boys also reflect on a win and a defeat for the West Ham Women within the last week before saying goodbye for another week at the end of this slightly shorter episode. Thanks for listening.      You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. 169: VARcical scenes at Man Utd - ft. West Ham correspondent Tom Clark24 Jan 202201:58:24
Once again, West Ham did a West Ham by losing a game that had 0-0 written all over it.  Except, against Man Utd, it was because of a controversial VAR call in the 93rd minute and a severe lapse in concentration.  The 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford hurt more than it has done in the past.  The Hammers are no strangers to losing there, but to do so in such fashion and at the expense of our position in the Premier League's top four was a tough one to take.  But despite that, David Moyes' men look forward to a potentially fruitful FA Cup run, the latter stages of the Europa League and another potential top-six finish. So it's not all bad. Yet. As we enter the final week of the January transfer window, David Moyes, Rob Newman and the club are yet to add to West Ham's unacceptably thin squad. And if they don't then all of the above might be a stretch too far for what is fast becoming a very tired group of players. This time next week fans will know more about what we should expect.  On this week's show, James Jones and Will Pugh give their thoughts on the controversy at Old Trafford, the performance and what they hope for after the international break.  Football.London's West Ham Correspondent Tom Clark dials in to chat about the defeat last weekend, West Ham's thriving bunch of academy prospects, Moyes' January transfer intentions and much more. The lads also talk through their Betway Charity Bets, which were all way off the mark this time around. And finally, we discuss West Ham Women's 4-2 Conti Cup defeat to Chelsea and the superb 3-0 win over Everton in the WSL as Oli Harder continues to turn the team's fortunes around after last season's battle to survive relegation.  There’s then time for some final thoughts before the boys say goodbye for another week. 168: Lack of 'clinicalism' vs Leeds & Man Utd next up17 Jan 202202:00:47
West Ham did a West Ham against Leeds and lost 3-2 at home just a week after dispatching them with ease in the FA Cup. They also beat hapless Norwich 2-0 at home since the last We Are West Ham podcast but even that left a slightly flat feel given the countless fluffed chances. Jarrod Bowen continued his excellent form with three goals in two games but he bizarrely felt the need to apologise to fans on social media after missing a sitter which would have made it 3-3 against Leeds at the death. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones to discuss all of that as well as give the low down on Issa Diop and his time at the club after two of his mistakes directly led to two of Jack Harrison’s three goals – the first hat-trick of his career. Sports journalist and Man Utd fan Matt Beadle dials in to chat all things Red Devils ahead of David Moyes’ men trip to Old Trafford on Saturday. The lads then make their Betway charity bet selections after a winner in the Norwich game. And then the Daily Mail’s Kathryn Batte joins again after watching West Ham Women nick a 1-1 draw away at Tottenham thanks to Kate Longhurst’s last minute headed winner. There’s then time for some final thoughts before the boys say goodbye for another week. Thanks for listening.      You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 167: Leeds double whammy & the FA Cup run begins10 Jan 202201:45:27
West Ham continued their perfect start to 2022 with a reasonably comfortable 2-0 win against Leeds at London Stadium in the third round of the FA Cup. Manuel Lanzini continued his superb run of form and opened the scoring in the first-half before Jarrod Bowen sealed the win in the closing stages. And the great day got even better for the Hammers who were draw against National League North side Kidderminster Harriers in the fourth round. Will Pugh is joined by James Jones to react to the Leeds win with the help of SunSport’s Kieran Benn who also looks ahead to the Whites’ second visit to the London Stadium in eight days. Marcelo Bielsa’s men arrive in East London again on Sunday - this time in the Premier League - with David Moyes’ men hoping to keep the pressure on the top-four. But before all that, Norwich turn up on Wednesday in the fixture that has been rearranged from last year after it was postponed because of Covid. Broadcaster and Canaries fan John Cushing dials in to chat all things Carrow Road and look ahead to that clash. The boys make also make their Betway charity bets. And they wrap things up with a look ahead to West Ham Women’s game at Tottenham this weekend with the Daily Mail’s women’s football correspondent Kathryn Batte. There’s then time for some final thoughts before the boys say goodbye for another week. Thanks for listening.     You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 166: New year, same ol' massive West Ham06 Jan 202201:45:49
West Ham started 2022 in perfect fashion with a 3-2 away win at Crystal Palace after capping of 2021 with equal success at Watford. Will Pugh and James Jones return for the first time this year to chew the fat on all things West Ham over the festive period. The boys look back at the Southampton defeat on Boxing Day before the two superb away wins that followed. And that is followed by a review of their Betway charity bets over the Christmas break including a winner in the Palace game! The January transfer window has opened and West Ham are said to be in the market.  Will reveals the Hammers are in for Everton’s Lucas Digne as well as the fact the club have cash to spend in the window and expect to sign a striker. The lads also run through some other options including having their say on whether controversial Flamengo striker would be a good fit in David Moyes’ team. That is before Darren from the LS11 podcast dials in to look ahead to Sunday’s FA Cup third round game against Leeds at London Stadium. And then there’s some final thoughts from the boys before they say goodbye for another week.    You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. Facebook: We Are West Ham podcast. 165: The best 12 months for decades - 2021 in review27 Dec 202102:27:56
West Ham United have just had the best 12 months in living memory. European qualification, their highest Premier League finish since the 90s, and some giant scalps along the way. Some stars have cemented themselves as cult heroes and in Declan Rice, Hammers fans have an icon they’ll remember forever. Will Pugh and James Jones are here for the last time in 2021 to look back on an unforgettable year of football for their beloved Hammers. From the near-perfect start in January and Jesse Lingard’s arrival to sealing that sixth place spot. The historic Euros and England’s run to the final with Rice at the heart of it making Hammers everywhere oh-so-proud. And when you thought it couldn’t get any better, David Moyes’ men kicked off the 2021-22 campaign in scintillating fashion – roaring to third in the Premier League and winning their Europa League group with a game to spare. Granted the year has finished with the worst run of form the team has been through in 2021, but bigger picture, it’s been a whirlwind dream that Irons fans can all be proud of. The lads recorded this show on Christmas Eve after the Tottenham defeat in the League Cup so don’t know what happened in the Southampton match. They run through the year month-by-month, game-by-game before handing out their end of year awards. It’s been a blast this year and they’ll be back at it in January.   Thank you so much for all your support in 2021, it’s been phenomenal and we are both really grateful.   We both hope you have a fantastic new year and look forward to the show getting back on the road in 2022.   You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 164: Spur(s)ed on by pain in the Arsenal20 Dec 202101:57:18
West Ham United lost 2-0 at Arsenal last Wednesday thanks to a combination of a much-changed Hammers team and the ref Anthony Taylor. Vladimir Coufal was sent off for two ridiculously soft yellow cards and after that, David Moyes’ men weren’t able to fight back from 1-0 down. In fact they let Emile Smith Rowe in to wrap up the points for the home side after Gabriel Martinelli had put them 1-0 up. The Irons looked like they had a good chance to bounce back with a home game against Norwich on Saturday but it was postponed after a Covid-related request from the Canaries. Will Pugh was at the Emirates and he is joined by James Jones to look back at that game as well as to look ahead to West Ham’s next two fixtures – Tottenham away in the Carabao Cup and Southampton at home on Boxing Day. Daily Express sports editor and huge Spurs fan Alex Milne dials in to chat all things Lilywhites with Antonio Conte having turned them around since taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo. And the Evening Standard’s West Ham correspondent, and massive Saints fan, Jack Rosser also joins to look ahead to that Southampton clash. The lads make their Betway charity selections after failing to pick a winner for the Gunners game. They look back at a decent League Cup win and a solid transitional year for West Ham Women under Ollie Harder. All of that before saying goodbye for 2021. There will be a pre-recorded review of the year show that goes out between Christmas and new year but this will be the last ‘proper format’ show of the year. Thank you so much for all your support this year, it’s been phenomenal and we are both really grateful. We both hope you have a fantastic Christmas and look forward to the show getting back on the road in 2022. You can follow the podcast here:    Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 163: So much love to Isla, boring Burnley and Gunning for Arsenal14 Dec 202100:53:15
The We Are West Ham podcast has a slightly different feel this week thanks to work commitments and the Hammers’ game vs Arsenal slap bang in the middle of the week. So this is part one of a two-part episode this week. Will Pugh and James Jones start with the heartbreaking news from Isla Caton’s mum Nikki that they’ve stopped treatment and beautiful Isla does not have too long left with us. She has been an inspiration to us here on the podcast and thousands, if not millions, of people – particularly West Ham fans - around the world. We send Isla and her family all the love, thoughts and best wishes we possibly can and hope that every single one of our listeners does too. Isla’s just giving page is still running as the family try to raise some more cash in order to make her last days, weeks and hopefully months as magical and memorable as they can. Please donate HERE if you can. After a sad but meaningful start to the podcast, the lads go on to discuss Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Burnley which Will had the misfortune of going to. And then sports news editor at SunSport and huge Arsenal fan Dan Cutts dials in to have a chat with Will ahead of Wednesday’s huge battle for the top-four at the Emirates. The lads round of with the Betway charity bets for the Gunners game before saying goodbye until later in the week. You can follow the podcast here:   Twitter: @We Are_West Ham. 162: All hail King Arthur the Chelsea slayer. Long live the King.07 Dec 202102:31:33
West Ham United's dream season just keeps going as the Hammers beat Chelsea 3-2 at the London Stadium They also made it nine games without a victory against Brighton since the last podcast but we won't talk about that. Actually Will Pugh and James Jones do talk about both of those games and much more in this bumper episode of the pod. The lads hail King Arthur Masuaku and his goal against the Blues, rue that ridiculous record against the Seagulls make their Betway charity bet selections and then look forward to the next two games this week. They start with Thursday's dead rubber Europa League game against Dinamo Zagreb at London Stadium before Joe from the Turfcast dials in to chat about Sunday's visit to Turf Moor in the Premier League. The boys finish up with a look ahead to West Ham Women's trip to Everton on Sunday before some final thoughts and saying goodbye for another week. 263. We've put our own hurdles in our own way16 Apr 202401:22:43
After losing 2-0 to both Bayer Leverkusen and Fulham over the last few days, West Ham's chances of competing in Europe for a fourth consecutive season are hanging by a thread. We have a mountain to climb in the second-leg vs. the newly crowned Bundesliga champions and failure to beat Fulham at home means we're now reliant on the likes of Newcastle, Man United and Chelsea all slipping up in the race for a top-seven finish. If they don't it'll likely be a 9th placed finish and the end of our love affair with European competition. But what has led to this after such a strong start to the season? It's a very similar situation to two years ago when a failure to invest in January led to the team running out of steam. It appears David Moyes and the club haven't learned their lesson, with a lack of options on the bench in recent weeks appearing to cost us. And what does this all mean for David Moyes' future? It's hard to see how he remains in the job beyond the summer. We discuss all of the above and more this week, with Leverkusen and Crystal Palace opposition views coming later this week. As always, thanks for listening! Remember, if you love what we do, please leave us a nice review on whatever platform you're listening on. 161: Europa done, City no fun & Brighton and Chelsea to come30 Nov 202102:07:07
West Ham United won their Europa League group with a game to spare having beat Rapid Vienna last Thursday. Imagine saying that three years ago. It was a fairly flat affair with no fans in the stadium but Mark Noble scored in Europe for the Hammers which is fairytale stuff. But the positive feeling didn't last long as David Moyes' men went to a snowy Etihad and lost 2-1 on Sunday. Will Pugh and James Jones are back again to discuss the last two games as well as to look forward to two huge Premier League encounters against Brighton and Chelsea - both at London Stadium. Tom the Seagulls fan dials in before long-time friend of the show Stamford Chidge joins in for a double-header opposition view. 160: Hunted by Wolves before Rapid & City24 Nov 202101:57:18
It's not often West Ham United can look back on a defeat and feel quite content.  To be fair, it's not often the Hammers have to look back on a defeat at all these days, such is the superb job David Moyes is doing. The 1-0 defeat at Wolves last weekend was deserved, so there are no complaints from James Jones and Will Pugh on this week's podcast. The likes of Michail Antonio in particular felt the effects of travelling thousands of miles on international duty. But one thing we can be sure of is the team's ability to bounce back quickly from defeat and they've got a good opportunity to do that on Thursday night against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League. It's so disappointing fans won't be there to see it but the blow of having supporters banned by UEFA was softened slightly by Austria going into another national lockdown this week, meaning the game will be played behind closed doors. All of that and much more is discussed on this week's show, as well as West Ham Women's huge 1-0 victory over Spurs with Kathryn Batte from the Daily Mail. Ahead of Sunday's trip to the Etihad, the lads are joined by David Mooney from the Blue Moon Podcast to get the lowdown on Man City for this week's Opposition View chat. And the lads talk through their Betway Charity Bet selections ahead of the weekend, with a couple of very, very attractive bets with decent odds! Lastly, we'd like to apologise for yet another delayed delivery of the podcast.  Life has got in the way a little bit recently but we're still doing our very best to bring you all the show you seem to enjoy so much! 159: UEFA away fan ban spoils Vienna Europa party17 Nov 202101:40:48
Well for the first time in what seems months, the We Are West Ham boys have something negative to talk about. After 150 ticket-less West Ham supporters stormed the turnstiles at the Hammers' last Europa League away game at GENK, Uefa have fined the club and banned away fans from their next European fixture - Rapid Vienna away. That has left the 1,700 ticket holders plus hundreds more Hammers fans planning to head to Austria for the celebration out of pocket to the tune of hundreds of pounds on money spent on flights and hotel. West Ham have criticised Uefa for the timing of the announcement and decided not to appeal having seen evidence. Will Pugh and James Jones are directly affected having booked flights and accommodation and the lads do not hold back when giving their opinion on the parties concerned. Having not had a chance to discuss last week, the chaps give their thoughts on Daniel Kretinsky's £180million investment into the club. The lads also make their Betway charity bets ahead of West Ham's visit to Molineux on Saturday. And Dan from the Wolves 77 club pod joins the lads to chat about the game as eighth-placed Wolves go into the game in middling form. Will and James look back at West Ham Women's 2-2 draw against Reading when the girls threw away a lead AGAIN! All that before some final thoughts and the usual dollop of banter and peeks behind the curtain. Thanks so much for listening - last week's pod made our top three most listened which is superb.
