833 · The Boy Who Became Tom Sawyer – Disney Legend Tom Nabbe - From the Archives He was just 12 years old when he pitched himself to Walt Disney to become Tom Sawyer… and Walt said, “I’ll think about it.” In this From the Archives episode of WDW Radio, I sit down with Disney Legend Tom Nabbe, the boy who went from selling newspapers outside Disneyland on opening day to becoming the real-life Tom Sawyer… and eventually helping open Walt Disney World, EPCOT, and even Disneyland Paris. With Tom Sawyer Island set to close forever on July 7, 2025, this conversation is more meaningful than ever. You’ll hear:
This is a story about curiosity, courage, legacy… and the people who helped build the magic. 👉 What’s YOUR favorite memory from Tom Sawyer Island – and how do you feel about this piece of Disney history being replaced? | 832 · Adventures by Disney Japan Recap: Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Tokyo & Kintsugi - Part 2 | 17 Jun 2025 | 01:27:53
832 · Adventures by Disney Japan Recap: Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Tokyo & Kintsugi - Part 2 Every step through Japan tells a story - and this week, I want to share ours. From centuries-old villages to hidden antique shops, we went looking for adventure... and found something even more meaningful. Japan continues to unfold its magic in Part 2 of our Adventures by Disney to Japan recap, as we travel to the serene mountain town of Takayama, the timeless village of Shirakawa-go, and the vibrant heart of Tokyo. But beyond the destinations, it was the small, unexpected moments that truly defined the journey - the quiet ones, the funny ones, and the ones that took our breath away. From stumbling into a tucked-away backstreet antique shop, to mending broken pottery with gold, to the awkward bravery of stepping into your first onsen... this wasn’t just a trip. It was an experience that changed us. It’s about the connections we made, the lessons we learned, the memories we’ll never forget - and the Adventures by Disney difference. 🙋🏻♀️ If you could visit one place in Japan, where would it be… and why? 📣 Comment in the WDW Radio Clubhouse or 📞 Call the Voicemail: 407-900-9391 ✈️ Looking to visit Japan (and maybe Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea)? | WDW Radio # 732 - Roger Rabbit in Walt Disney World: What Is, Was, and Might Have Been - From the WDW Radio Archives | 16 Jun 2023 | 01:01:12
WDW Radio # 732 - Roger Rabbit in Walt Disney World: What Is, Was, and Might Have Been - From the WDW Radio Archives Some questions and discussion in the WDW Radio Clubhouse on Facebook this week prompted me to pull this show from the WDW Radio Archives, as Jim Korkis and I virtually visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Show # 327 back in 2013, where we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." We recorded live at Disney's Hollywood Studios take a stroll through the Studios and look back at the movie’s history, Roger’s presence in the Studios and elsewhere around the parks (both current and extinct), what might have been, and what the future may hold for Roger Rabbit in the Disney Parks. For a much more important and meaningful reason, I also wanted to feature an episode with my longtime friend and guest on the show, Jim Korkis. Jim is not only one of the most knowledgable Disney historians and wonderful storyteller and author of dozens of books, but Jim is just a good man. I shared recently that after suffering his fall and long recovery in the hospital, as well as multiple heart bypasses, Jim has been diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 colon cancer that has also spread to his liver. I visited with Jim for a few hours this week, and he will be starting chemotherapy in the next few weeks. He is also very concerned about mounting bills, and I also wanted to share that a GoFundMe has been formed to help with home and medical expenses. I created an easy link directly to it at WDWRadio.com/HelpJim. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You may have never met Jim, but he has been a friend since the very beginning, and is a member of our extended family. Anything you can do to help, whether it be through prayer, his GoFundMe, or even just spreading the word to others would be greatly appreciated Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 730 - The True Story of Walt Disney's True-Life Adventures This week, we look at the origins of Walt Disney’s True Life Adventure series, the Academy Award winning films that were not only entertaining, but important. I am joined by Didier Ghez, author of “The Origins of Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures.” We’ll explore how and why Walt Disney started making documentary films, including his personal attention to and concerns about the vanishing frontier, and how these films helped influence the way that nature and conservation were and are portrayed in media. | WDW Radio # 729 - Lost Resorts of the Magic Kingdom: The Asian, Persian, and Venetian - From the WDW Radio Archives | 24 May 2023 | 00:27:08
WDW Radio # 729 - Lost Resorts of the Magic Kingdom: The Asian, Persian, and Venetian - From the WDW Radio Archives Since on our last episode of the show, we imagined Walt Disney World resort concepts that could be and we’d like to see, this week, we go back in time not just on the show to 2008 and Show # 91, but way back to a time before Walt Disney World had even opened. We’ll metaphorically trek through the Florida swamps, as we take a close look at a Walt Disney World we never knew by exploring the Lost Resorts of the Magic Kingdom. The exotic Asian, Persian, and Venetian resorts would have been built along the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon (hence its name) as part of Phase One. We’ll take a fun look back at what was supposed to be and might have been, with a little wondering and wishing as well. | WDW Radio # 727 - Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Closing... and the Good that May Come From It | 19 May 2023 | 00:44:07
WDW Radio # 727 - Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Closing... and the Good that May Come From It I'm actually not diving into the Archives this week, because as I said when first added this new show to the feed, also opened up other opportunities to discuss and address important events as they happen... like this week. On Thursday, May 18, Disney announced that they would be closing the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser, with the final voyage taking place in September. Based on numerous discussions that were going on in the WDW Radio Clubhouse on Facebook, as well as private conversations I was having via text, DM, etc. I felt it was important to go live, and discuss, with you, the announcement, our reactions, as well as speculation as to what's next. I share my honest thoughts and reaction, including why I think the Starcruiser was forced to close, Bob Iger, the Cast Members, as well as the good that I think can and will come from this unexpected announcement and closure. So I decided to take the audio from the live show and share it here on the podcast, as I understand that maybe you didn't catch this live conversation, or missed the video replay which is posted in the Clubhouse. And in addition to what we discussed here, I think there is much more to talk about in terms of the Starcruiser, your concepts and ideas of what should happen next, your experiences on the Starcruiser if you had them, and anything else you're like to talk about. To be part of future live conversations, please be sure to join me every Wednesday night at 7:30pm at WDWRadioLIVE.com, and turn on notifications on the WDW Radio Facebook page and in the Clubhouse so you don't miss a thing... including unscheduled shows like this one! Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. | WDW Radio # 725 - Wayback Machine to Disney’s Polynesian Resort - From the WDW Radio Archives | 12 May 2023 | 00:42:09
WDW Radio # 725 - Wayback Machine to Disney’s Polynesian Resort - From the WDW Radio Archives On last night's WDW Radio LIVE show (WDWRadioLIVE.com), I brought you with me to and through Disney's Polynesian Resort for a walking tour at sunset of the grounds and Great Ceremonial House. We also looked at and discussed the construction of the new Disney Vacation Club Tower, and I remarked how the idea of a tower at this location was not something new, but was planned for from the very beginning, as early concepts for Disney’s Polynesian Resort featured a 12-story tower before evolving into a more architecturally authentic “village” layout. So in the spirit of aloha and the origins of Disney's Polynesian Resort, I went back into the Archives this week to Show 111, where we boarded my Walt Disney World Wayback Machine and looked at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort through the years... at least up until 2009 when the episode first released. We turned back the clock to a time before Walt Disney World was even a vision in Walt’s mind, and look at how his personal interests influenced what would become the model for themed resorts that would follow. We explored the Polynesian Village through the years and looked at some of its additions, changes and lost experiences. It's also interesting to hear how we discussed what the resort was like today (today being 2009), and then speculated as to what the future may hold... or should I say may have held. Were we right? Let's see... Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 723 - The Muppets in Walt Disney World That Never Were - From the WDW Radio Archives With The Muppets Mayhem coming to Disney+, and having just watched Muppet Treasure Island on FunnelVision on the Disney Fantasy... and just my love of the Muppets and fond memories of growing up with The Muppet Show, this week we're going to go back in time and take a look back at the relationship between Disney and the Muppets, including the story of how the Muppets came to Walt Disney World in a variety of ways. Go back nearly 12 years to Show 251 - Join me from Disney's Hollywood Studios as we tour the park and explore some of the secrets, stories and history of MuppetVision 3D, Muppet-based shows that are no longer here, the Disney-Henson marriage, as well as "The Muppets That Never Were." Jim Korkis joins me as we wander the Studios and discuss some of the proposed concepts that never made it both in and out of the parks. | WDW Radio # 721 - How to Become a Disney Imagineer - From the WDW Radio Archives | 13 Apr 2023 | 00:27:52
WDW Radio # 721 - How to Become a Disney Imagineer - From the WDW Radio Archives We're going back fifteen years this week, to a segment I called, "How to Be an Imagineer," which was in response to a question I received (and still do) quite often since I first started the show more than 18 years ago. In 2008, Disney Imagineer Ed Romeo joined me to talk about his story and journey to become an Imagineer, as well as what working at and for Imagineering was like. This interview was the first of many conversations that I have shared on the show over the years that helped demonstrate that the road to becoming an Imagineer might not necessarily be one the path you think, and there are many different ways you (or your child) can become an Imagineer. | WDW Radio # 719 - Top Ten Things in Walt Disney World That Are Better at Night - From the WDW Radio Archives | 06 Apr 2023 | 00:32:32
WDW Radio # 719 - Top Ten Things in Walt Disney World That Are Better at Night - From the WDW Radio Archives On last night's WDW Radio LIVE show, I spent the evening wandering my way through Tomorrowland, to not only celebrate the opening of Tron Lightcycle /Run, but speculate on the future of this land. As we explored the entire land as the golden hour dissolved into twilight, Tomorrowland was energized with new life... and light, and takes on an entirely new atmosphere at night. Riding the Peoplemover and looking over at the spectacular, color-changing canopy of Tron, I thought not only about how beautiful this (and other lands) are at night, but how some things in Walt Disney World are just better after dark. So for this week's show From the Archives, we're going back to 2009 and show # 104, where we discussed our list of Top Ten Things in Walt Disney World That are Better at Night. In more than 18 years of podcasting, I very VERY rarely revisit a topic, but enough time has passed and new additions to the parks and resorts have been made that it may be time to reexamine this list on an upcoming episode. But for now, please enjoy this look (and listen) at our list, and I invite you to share suggestions of what else needs to be added when we make up our new list (spoiler alert... Tron WILL be on that list). Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. | WDW Radio # 717 - Cindy Morgan from TRON Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives | 31 Mar 2023 | 00:48:32
WDW Radio # 717 - Cindy Morgan from TRON Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives Spoiler alert... I'm a bit of a nerd. Growing up, I loved (love) video games and technology, storytelling, adventure, and the unknown... and that hasn't changed much. More than 40 years ago, a Disney film was released that would forever change the science fiction genre, as well as animation, video gaming and the lives of many young geeks like myself. Smart, stylish and fun, the game grid of Tron was groundbreaking, and in 2010, Tron was reborn with the Tron: Legacy film (and do you remember the Tronorail at Walt Disney World, ElecTRONica at Disneyland, or what about Tron: Uprising on Disney XD... with all of them now on Disney+). So in 2012, on WDW Radio show # 277, a little, nerdy dream of mine came true, as I had the opportunity to speak in an exclusive interview with one of the original film’s stars, Cindy Morgan, who played the dual role of Lora and Yori. She may or may not have also been the subject of a bit of a boyhood crush of mine for her role in Caddyshack. Cindy joined me to talk about her career and role in Tron, as she shared stories of the making of the films, the Tron phenomenon, her fans and much more. With the opening of TRON: Lightcycle Run this week in Magic Kingdom, the timing for listening back to my conversation with Cindy (who I still love seeing at comic and conventions) seemed appropriate. I may just have to reach out to her again for the follow up conversation we discussed. Are you a fan of the original TRON? What about TRON: Legacy? Have you experienced TRON Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom (or Shanghai Disneyland) yet? Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. | WDW Radio # 716 - Italy Pavilion in EPCOT: How Close is The Pavilion to the Real Thing? - From the WDW Radio Archives | 23 Mar 2023 | 01:42:42
WDW Radio # 716 - Italy Pavilion in EPCOT: How Close is The Pavilion to the Real Thing? - From the WDW Radio Archives I just returned from our incredible WDW Radio Adventures by Disney group trip to Italy a few days ago, and I am still reeling in the feeling of the Italian "la dolce vita." So I went back into the archives this week to bring you along with me TO Italy... in World Showcase in EPCOT Center. For decades, Epcot's Word Showcase has allowed visitors to Walt Disney World to visit, explore, and learn about regions, cultures, and people from all over the world, and in many cases, countries they may never get to visit otherwise. And with all things Disney, it's rooted in story, and in the case of the pavilions of World Showcase, the history as well. We wander through replicas of villages, buildings, shops, streets, and temples, but just how close are the pavilions to the real thing? In the past, we have asked and answered this question with detailed looks at the UK on show 202, and Norway on show 236... and in 2018, on show # 528 we did it again, as we traveled to Italy. For this episode, I was joined by a friend from Italy who helps to compare and contrast the pavilion with the country. Recorded live as we wandered through the pavilion, we discuss the architecture, culture, symbolism, history and stories, as we virtually tour the piazza, shops, dining options, history, architecture, and much more. It's a fascinating look into how and where Italian culture, traditions and history are found in the pavilion itself, and the attention to detail that Disney's Imagineers included to provide guests a truly authentic experience. Oh, and we may stop to sample an item on the menu… or two. I am actually personally very curious and interested to go back and listen to this one myself, having just returned from so many of the locations that inspired and are featured in the EPCOT version. Have you ever visited Italy? How do you think the EPCOT version compares to the real thing? Is Italy on your bucket list of places to visited? Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. | WDW Radio # 714 - The Orange Bird - From the WDW Radio Archives | 07 Mar 2023 | 00:44:38
WDW Radio # 714 - The Orange Bird - From the WDW Radio Archives I visited the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival this week, and love seeing old friends... not just wandering and grazing the promenade with me, but old friends from Walt Disney World's past... and present. In recent years, we have seen a resurgence in nostalgia, sentiment, and love for our little purple friend with childlike innocence, Figment, as well as our favorite combination of fruit and fowl, the Little Orange Bird. And in the past 50 years, we've seen some pretty interesting things at Walt Disney World: A waterskiing Goofy, gunfighters shooting it out in Frontierland, singing fruit, a rapping Mickey and much more. But until 2011, many people didn't know who the Orange Bird was, let alone remember seeing a character walking around in Adventureland with a giant orange head, leaves for arms and a green stem sticking out of his head. It started with a slow release of retro merchandise in Magic Kingdom, and in 2012, the Orange Bird returned to Sunshine Tree Terrace signage and quirky drink cups, and a new line of Orange Bird merchandise started to appear on the shelves! Also, an Orange Bird statue that was on display at Sunshine Tree Terrace in the 1970s was retrieved from the Walt Disney Imagineering Sculpture Studio in California, and is now on display in full, orange glory. This rekindled a sense of fond remembrance for our little orange friend, and now, he is not only present in our memories, hearts, and Adventureland, but is a huge fixture at this year's Festival in Epcot. He has inspired not just a huge line of merchandise, but even some food items as well. So I went back into the WDW Radio Archives this week to 2011 and Show #250, where Jim Korkis and I took a look back in time at the Sunshine Tree Terrace and it's one-time host (and hostess). We explore the origins of the Orange Bird, the Sherman Brothers song, why he and Anita Bryant may have flown the coop, and the (then) recent resurgence of our little orange friend. I'll then pose a question for you to share your thoughts on as well. Do you remember seeing the little Orange Bird in Adventureland in the 70's? Did you ever get a photo with the walk around character? Share your memories, and thoughts about this old and new unofficial mascot for the parks in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. | WDW Radio # 712 - Interview with Former Imagineer Steve Kirk - From the WDW Radio Archives | 02 Mar 2023 | 00:39:16
WDW Radio # 712 - Interview with Former Imagineer Steve Kirk - From the WDW Radio Archives After visiting EPCOT this past week, and in thinking about the future of that park, specifically the Imagination pavilion, I went way back into the WDW Radio Archives to being you one of my earliest interviews. Let's go back to 2007 and Show # 30, when, as part of my Legends of Disney Imagineering feature, I shared my conversation with former Imagineer Steve Kirk. Steve helped come up with the initial concepts for Figment and the Dreamfinder, as well as the Journey Into Imagination attraction, and also helped develop some of Disney's most memorable characters, attractions, pavilions, and even complete theme parks, including being the creative leader of Tokyo DisneySea. We also talk about Epcot, the Studios and so much more. I would later come to interview his brother, Tim Kirk about his work at Imagineering, specifically at the Disney-MGM Studios, but that is another trip to the archives for another day. For now, sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation (and forgive my voice), with the fascinating and talented Steve Kirk.

| WDW Radio # 708 - Interview with Disney Legend Alice Davis - From the WDW Radio Archives | 17 Feb 2023 | 01:36:42 | |
WDW Radio # 708 - Interview with Disney Legend Alice Davis - From the WDW Radio Archives From the WDW Radio Archives... one of my all-time favorite interviews, and one that listeners reference all the time, Disney Legend, Alice Davis. I had the honor of spending the day with Alice Davis in her home, where we discussed her fairy tale story of how she came to work for and with Walt Disney through her marriage to Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men. In addition to discussing her relationships with both, we also closely examine her work on classic films such as Sleeping Beauty, and attractions such as it’s a small world and Pirates of the Caribbean. Alice shares her very personal stories and humorous anecdotes about her work and life, from her early beginnings to the World’s Fair, to her ongoing connection to Disney enthusiasts today. It is the only episode and guest I ever had to bleep.... listen and find out why. Sadly, Alice Davis passed on November 3, 2022, so I consider it a privilege and a gift to have been able to capture her stories in her own words... more importantly, in her own voice, and be able to share it with you. You can listen to the original episode in it's entirety at WDW Radio # 193 ----------------------------------
