| 242. Plug Up That Draft | 06 Sep 2026 | 01:06:41 | |
This week, Chris and Jamal get into the new world of submitting Wayspots now that Pokémon GO nominations have officially moved to the web. Jamal takes a well-earned victory lap after realizing that much of what he predicted back in Episode 217 has actually happened, and the guys share their best tips for using Drafts to make nominations faster, easier, and less disruptive while you're out exploring. From getting the pin right and taking plenty of photos to gathering information on-site and finishing the nomination later, they break down how to make the most of the new workflow.
Then, Chris and Jamal finally tackle one of the community's most requested topics: Wayfarer plugins! Chris walks through installing Tampermonkey, finding scripts through Wayfarer Tools, and highlights some of the plugins that can make reviewing, submitting, mapping, and managing Wayspots much easier. If you've looked at plugins before and thought they seemed too technical, this is the episode for you.
Plus, Tales from Canada gets a little soggy after a massive storm rolls through Chris's area, and Wayspots of the Week take us from a unique piece of Genghis Khan artwork to Victory Lane at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. And Coal of the Week? Well… let's just say Queens, New York and Toronto, Ontario aren't exactly a few meters between friends.

| 241. Welcome to Wayfarer | 30 Aug 2026 | 01:11:35 | |
Jamal and Chris get into a major change coming to Wayfarer, and this one could fundamentally change how Pokémon GO players think about Wayspot nominations.
Beginning September 1st, new PokéStop nominations started in Pokémon GO will send Wayfinders over to the Wayfarer website to complete their submission. Jamal and Chris break down why they both love the change, what it could mean for casual nominators, and some of the potential bumps along the way.
Topic #1 – Pokémon GO Is Sending Us to Wayfarer
Is this finally the move that separates “submitting a PokéStop” from nominating a Wayspot? The guys discuss the new workflow, web drafts, mobile versus desktop submissions, browser and login concerns, and whether this is another step toward Wayfarer becoming the true home of the Wayspot network.
Topic #2 – Are Better Tools Making Better Wayfinders?
With the Wayspot Map, Web Submission, satellite imagery, S2 overlays, Wayfarer Map Mods and years of community knowledge at our fingertips, today’s Wayfinder has access to more information than ever before.
But does better information actually make better Wayfinders, or does it just make people better at optimizing the gameboard? Jamal and Chris get into the difference between optimization and manipulation and what happens when a whole new group of Wayfinders suddenly gets introduced to everything Wayfarer has to offer.
Plus, One’s Gotta Go: Toy Edition puts LEGO, Hot Wheels, Nerf and Super Soakers on the chopping block. We’ve got two fantastic Wayspots of the Week, including an incredible rainbow playground shot, and Kroner delivers a Coal of the Week that is, quite literally, coal. 😂
And a special thanks to Lavender Town Accounting for supporting Episode 241, along with all of our Patrons, Gym Leaders and Elite Four!
Are better tools making us better Wayfinders? Let us know what you think!

| 240. A World Without Wayfarer | 23 Aug 2026 | 01:12:46 | |
This week on Wayspotters, Chris comes in with what might be one of his hottest Wayfarer takes ever: Would Pokémon GO even exist without OPR and Wayfarer? We talk about just how much the player-built map has shaped the games we play and the way we explore the real world.
Then things take an unexpected turn when Chris's computer decides it's done podcasting for the day. Wayfarer Ambassador Elf From Space answers the emergency call and joins Jamal for the rest of the show.
Could Pokémon GO exist without Wayfarer? And what would these games look like if their maps weren't built around real-world places discovered by actual people?
Chris and Jamal dig into it.
A gorgeous historic staircase nominated by Pokémon GO creator JoeBeats gets rejected by Emily.
Jamal and Elf discuss why AI sometimes struggles with unusual nominations, when an appeal makes sense, and the challenge of creating a nomination that works for Emily, the community, and an appeals reviewer.
Mermaid at Coa Del Mar – A beautiful mural and relief artwork submitted by Agent X.
Cars and Jellyfish Driving Underwater – Jamal finds another example of Portland apparently refusing to leave any wall unpainted. This time, it's a mural hiding behind a car wash.
An interesting historic mantelpiece meets a questionable photo, some rough capitalization, and "mantelpiece" spelled wrong twice... two different ways.
Reading is fundamental, people.
A HUGE thank you to our Elite Four: Ozark Renee and our newest member, Monika.exe! Your incredible support of Wayspotters and the Pokémon Professor Network means more than you know.
Thanks for listening, thanks for exploring, and remember:
What's a few meters between friends?

| 239. Don’t Get Banned | 16 Aug 2026 | 01:12:29 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into two topics that have been generating plenty of conversation throughout the Wayfarer community: voting rings and how not to get yourself banned.
The guys start by defining what a voting ring actually is and, just as importantly, what it isn't. Talking Wayfarer with friends, helping someone improve a nomination, teaching criteria, or simply reviewing in the same community isn't automatically abuse. The line gets crossed when reviewers begin coordinating outcomes: asking others to approve or reject specific nominations, trading votes, using multiple accounts, or organizing reviews specifically to manipulate the map. They also discuss how perfectly innocent behavior can sometimes look suspicious and why context matters when enforcement gets it wrong.
That leads directly into Topic #2: How Not to Get Yourself Banned. Jamal and Chris break down multi-accounting, fake Wayspots, AI-generated and manipulated images, title and description edits, photo edits, and the especially complicated world of location edits. The big distinction throughout the conversation is intent: correcting an inaccurate Wayspot location is very different from moving an already accurate Wayspot simply to manipulate a game board.
And because this is Wayspotters, things inevitably get nerdy when Jamal and Chris start talking about strategic pin placement. Can a few meters make the difference between getting a PokéStop and getting nothing? Absolutely. But where's the line between smart initial placement and manipulating an existing Wayspot? They even look at a real playground where roughly half a meter could determine whether the nomination appears in Pokémon GO. What's a half-meter between friends? 😂
Plus, the guys give some love to PokeAK for highlighting Chris's take on the recent ban conversation, cover the new Japanese Wayfarer Ambassador program, and finish with two very different Wayspots of the Week: Agent X's snow-covered Broken Horn Brewing Company and Elf From Space's absolutely wild Verve Lobby Slides.
And then there's Coal of the Week. It's a two-story American flag mural that should have been an absolute slam dunk... except someone somehow used a screenshot of the Pokémon GO nomination screen as the main photo. Jamal and Chris spend several minutes simply trying to figure out how we got here. 😂
Voting rings vs. healthy Wayfarer communities • Coordinated reviewing and multi-accounting • How innocent reviewers can accidentally look suspicious • Ban appeals and false positives • Fake and AI-generated Wayspots • Good edits vs. abusive edits • Location accuracy vs. game-board manipulation • Strategic pin placement • Japanese Wayfarer Ambassadors • PokeAK gives Wayspotters some love • Two Wayspots of the Week • One spectacularly bad Coal of the Week
Stick around for: A playground, an S2 cell boundary, and the return of the most important philosophical question in Wayfarer...
What's a half-meter between friends? 😂

| 238. Don’t Hurt Yourself | 09 Aug 2026 | 01:17:37 | |
Chris and Jamal are back for Episode 238, and after some dad talk about birthdays, kids growing up, college, lacrosse, and just how different parenting is in the digital age, they jump into a week where the Wayfarer community had a lot to say.
The guys revisit last week’s discussion about moving Wayspots and gameboard optimization after listeners raise an important question: what happens when moving an existing Wayspot into a new cell affects someone else’s legitimate nomination, or even another game entirely? They also discover that apparently they managed to upset both the breakfast-mushroom community AND Pikmin Bloom players in the same episode. Impressive.
Then it’s time for the main event.
A Pokémon GO player took to X claiming they received a 30-day ban after simply trying to help their community by submitting PokéStops. Sounds scary... until you start looking at the details. Multiple accounts, a nomination for something already on the map, and a screenshot from a YouTube video being used as the nomination photo suddenly make the story look very different.
Jamal and Chris break down the viral conversation surrounding the ban and tackle some of the arguments that followed. Can reviewers actually target a specific submitter? Why can a Wayfarer violation affect your Pokémon GO account? Should volunteers really be punished for breaking the rules? What about spoofers and major content creators who appear to violate Terms of Service without consequences? And when does legitimate criticism of Wayfarer cross over into fear mongering?
The conversation leads to a simple message: participating in Wayfarer is not inherently dangerous. Enforcement emails can sometimes be poorly worded, community review will never be perfectly consistent, and legitimate nominations absolutely get rejected. But those things are very different from receiving enforcement action after violating established rules.
They also examine another ban situation involving accounts being used by children and how something that initially looks like another frightening enforcement story can become much easier to understand once all the details come out.
And for anyone hearing these stories and wondering whether they should even try Wayfarer, the guys finish the discussion with the opposite message: yes, you should. Read the guidelines, start reviewing, connect with experienced Wayfinders, ask questions, and get involved. The goal shouldn't be to make people afraid of Wayfarer. It should be to help people understand how to participate responsibly.
Plus, we’ve got Wayspots of the Week, Coal of the Week, Tales from Canada, Dad Jokes, and plenty of the usual Wayspotters chaos along the way.
Stick around for: Chris and Jamal discover that sometimes the biggest threat to your Wayfarer account isn't Scopely Explore, the reviewers, or some mysterious person targeting your nominations...
Sometimes you just need to stop hurting yourself.

This week, Chris and Jamal get into one of the biggest philosophical questions Wayfarer has faced since the transition to Scopely Explore: should gameplay finally have a seat at the table? They debate whether legitimate location edits that improve the gameboard should still be considered abuse, discuss if Scopely should be more transparent about S2 cells and inclusion rules, and imagine what Wayfarer would look like if it were built from scratch by a gaming company instead of a mapping company. Before diving into the topics, Chris responds to a lively Reddit discussion surrounding last week's episode and clarifies his thoughts on Wayfarer, player data, and Niantic's original mission.
Chris responds to last week's Reddit debate and clears up the context behind his comments.
A major Wayfarer update now lets you finish draft submissions from anywhere without returning to the nomination location.
Should gameplay optimization still be considered abuse if the final pin location remains accurate?
If Scopely built Wayfarer from scratch today, what rules would stay, what would change, and what would disappear?
One's Gotta Go: Pizza Toppings Edition (Pepperoni, Sausage, Bacon, or Mushrooms?)
Wayspots of the Week feature a stunning dog park mural and a beautifully designed boardwalk entrance.
Coal of the Week highlights why Little Free Libraries on K–12 school property should never be nominated.
A thought-provoking discussion about the future of Wayfarer under Scopely, Chris' Reddit rebuttal, another community debate sparked by One's Gotta Go, and a pair of fantastic community-submitted Wayspots that showcase exactly what makes exploring so much fun.

| 236. Ok, but why are you asking? | 26 Jul 2026 | 01:07:16 | |
This week, Chris and Jamal get into Scopely Explore's recent Pokémon GO survey and what it could mean for the future of gyms, PokéCoins, and Wayfarer.
They discuss whether more gyms could be coming, if free coins might move beyond the current gym system, and how those changes could impact the Wayfarer community. The conversation then shifts to a spirited debate about the value of Wayfarer contributions, as they respond to the claim that Wayfinders are simply providing "free labor" and explain why helping build better communities is its own reward.
Plus, Chris shares another hilarious Tales from Canada, Agent X celebrates an incredible milestone of 3,000 accepted Wayspots, and the guys expose a fake playground that somehow appeared in two different locations on the map.

| 235. Louder Together… But Heard? | 19 Jul 2026 | 01:04:30 | |
This week Jamal and Chris are back together as Chris returns to the show, and there is plenty to catch up on! The guys discuss the end of the standalone Wayfarer social media presence and what combining Wayfarer and general player support under Scopely Explore could mean for communication with the community. Will Wayfarer benefit from a larger audience, or will important updates get lost among game support issues? And does this move make the Wayfarer Community Forum more important than ever?
Then, inspired by a listener question, Jamal and Chris break down how to write a successful Wayfarer appeal. From addressing the actual rejection reason and bringing new evidence to avoiding emotional arguments and making reviewers do the work for you, they share practical advice for giving your appeal its best chance of success.
Plus, One’s Gotta Go forces them to choose between Google Street View, official website links, supporting photos, and satellite view. Which essential Wayfarer tool could they live without forever?
Stick around for two very different Wayspots of the Week, including a lesson in how to get a Wayspot approved inside one of the biggest chain restaurants in the world, plus a beautiful mural celebrating a Pennsylvania town’s coal-mining roots. Then Grandpa TP sends us straight to detention with a Coal of the Week that proves sometimes a great joke still makes for a terrible Wayspot.
In this episode:
Chris returns to the show
Wayfarer and player support merge under Scopely Explore
Does Wayfarer still need its own social media identity?
Why the Wayfarer Forum may now be the real home for official communication
How to build a stronger Wayfarer appeal
Why you should address the rejection reason first
Bringing evidence instead of emotion
One’s Gotta Go: Wayfarer Tools Edition
How to nominate something eligible inside a chain restaurant
A mural celebrating local coal-mining history
A detention center nomination that belongs in the Coal pile
Stick around for: Dad jokes, two Wayspots of the Week, Coal of the Week, and the return of the Jamal-and-Chris banter we’ve been missing!

| 234. Misplaced and Misunderstood | 12 Jul 2026 | 01:09:46 | |
Chris is still away this week, so Agent X returns to the co-host chair alongside Jamal for another packed episode of Wayspotters. This week’s conversation covers some of the biggest recent developments in Wayfarer, including the shift from Niantic Games to Scopely Explore, reports that Niantic Spatial has moved from resolving photo additions to processing nomination approvals, and signs that Pikmin Bloom may have received a map update.
Then Agent X takes the lead on Topic #1: Location, Location, Location, breaking down how even a great nomination can fail if the pin placement is wrong. Using real examples like pathway markers, neighborhood signs, and Little Free Libraries, he and Jamal talk through how sidewalks, fences, verges, and other boundaries can be the difference between an acceptance and a rejection—especially when private residential property is involved. In Topic #2, they tackle the question of whether suspicious nominations are actually abuse or just misunderstandings from newer Wayfarers who don’t fully understand how location placement works. It’s a thoughtful discussion about where to draw the line between education and enforcement, and how reviewers can approach questionable nominations without assuming the worst every time.
Wayfarer News: Scopely Explore officially arrives, Niantic Spatial appears to be approving nominations, and Pikmin Bloom may have had a map sync
Topic #1 – Location, Location, Location: why bad pin placement can ruin an otherwise great nomination
Topic #2 – Abuse or Misunderstanding?: when a misplaced pin is just a mistake, and when it might be something more
Tales from Idaho: Agent X debuts a new segment with the story of Soda Springs’ famous man-made captive geyser
Wayspot of the Week #1: a creative bug hotel that blends art, conservation, and local identity

| 233. A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Votes | 06 Jul 2026 | 01:28:36 | |
This week Jamal is joined by not one but two Wayfarer Ambassadors, as Chris is out this week, with Agent X and ElfFromSpace stepping in for a packed episode of Wayspotters. After opening with some heartfelt words for Chris and his family, the crew jumps into one of the biggest recent Wayfarer updates: photo voting on the Wayfarer map. They break down what the feature does, why it’s a meaningful quality-of-life change, and whether it could lead to better Wayspot photos, more player engagement on the Wayfarer website, or a few good old-fashioned photo thumb wars.
From there, ElfFromSpace takes the lead on a deep-dive into how to take better Wayspot photos, with practical tips on framing, lighting, cropping, night photography, murals, bridges, basketball courts, restaurant interiors, and how far you can go with editing before a photo starts to cross the line.
One’s Gotta Go: Movie Theater Snacks

| 231. Did my POI Hurt Your Feelings? | 21 Jun 2026 | 01:18:18 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into one of the biggest philosophical debates in Wayfarer: Who gets to decide what's interesting? Using memorial benches as the foundation of the conversation, they explore how reviewers balance personal opinions against local significance and whether a nomination's value should be determined by the broader community or the people who know its story best.
The debate over memorial benches and whether they deserve a place on the map.
Why "selling the nomination" with strong supporting information can make all the difference.
The importance of local context and why something meaningful to a community may not look impressive to outsiders.
The difference between an eligible Wayspot and what some reviewers consider a "high-quality" Wayspot.
Real-world examples of community leaders, coaches, athletes, and advocates whose stories transformed ordinary-looking benches into meaningful places of exploration.
The discussion then expands into the concept of rogue reviewing communities and how local reviewing cultures can shape the map in dramatically different ways. Jamal and Chris examine the challenges created when some cities become extremely strict while others become much more accepting, and whether either approach is ultimately healthy for Wayfarer.
How local Discords, Facebook groups, and community norms influence reviewing behavior.
The pros and cons of "Need More Stops" communities.
Why some cities become known for approving neighborhood signs, murals, trails, and local businesses.
Whether it's worse for a community to approve too much or reject too much.
The question: Do most Pokémon GO players care what a Wayspot is, or simply where it appears on the map?
A spirited round of One's Gotta Go featuring kickball, dodgeball, four square, and tag.
Wayspot of the Week featuring a memorial bench honoring Pokémon voice actress Rachel Lillis.
Another Wayspot of the Week showcasing an artist-designed public bench that turns functional seating into public art.
Coal of the Week highlighting why K-12 school nominations remain one of the easiest ways to earn a rejection.
Whether you're a seasoned Wayfarer reviewer, a new submitter, or just someone who enjoys the philosophy behind what makes a great Wayspot, this episode asks a simple question with surprisingly complicated answers:
Is a Wayspot interesting because you think it is, or because it matters to someone else?

| 230. Don’t Do The Crime | 14 Jun 2026 | 01:01:22 | |
This week Chris and Jamal discuss a recent wave of Wayfarer-related bans and the lessons every Wayfinder can learn from them. The duo breaks down several forum posts from players claiming they were unfairly punished, only for the truth to unravel through forum investigations, misplaced pins, AI-edited nomination photos, multi-accounting admissions, and a few cases of people digging themselves deeper with every reply. Along the way, they discuss why the Wayfarer forums often provide a more balanced perspective than social media and offer practical advice on avoiding the dreaded banhammer.
The conversation also takes a detour into a classic Tales from Canada segment featuring a former airline captain who allegedly flew commercial jets for 17 years without the required pilot license. Chris and Jamal discuss how such a thing could happen, what it says about trust in verification systems, and why both Air Canada and Transport Canada are likely eager to move on from the story. The episode wraps up with a look at a stunning butterfly mural for Wastepot of the Week, an appeal-worthy hobby shop nomination featuring one of the best supporting statements they've ever seen, and a Call of the Week highlighting why accurate pin placement remains one of the most important parts of a successful nomination.
Episode Highlights:
Recent Wayfarer ban cases and what actually happened
Multi-accounting, AI-edited photos, and misplaced pins
Why forum investigations often reveal the full story
Tales from Canada: The pilot who allegedly flew without a license for 17 years

Appeal success story from Des Plaines Hobbies
Call of the Week: Airport map nomination gone wrong

| 229. Spaghetti Noms | 07 Jun 2026 | 01:33:15 | |
This week Jamal and Chris dive into the rise of what Jamal calls "spaghetti nominations" Wayspot submissions that live in the gray area between obvious slam dunks and outright rejections. The duo takes a nostalgic trip back to the early days of Wayfarer, when submitters had only seven nominations and every submission had to count. Comparing those days to today's abundance of nomination slots, they discuss how player behavior has changed, whether nomination quality has dipped, and if Niantic and Scopely have unintentionally encouraged Wayfinders to test the boundaries of eligibility.
Along the way, Chris and Jamal review a variety of real-world nomination examples, including neighborhood entrance signs, apartment pergolas, decorative benches, utility box art, fountains, trail markers, business murals, community mailboxes, and even dumpster art. The conversation explores the difference between reviewing to approve versus reviewing to deny, the growing divide between map purists and gameplay-focused submitters, and whether Wayfarer communities are at risk of "going rogue" as nomination opportunities continue to expand. The episode also features Dad Jokes, Mom Jokes, a discussion about Go Fest, and a pair of fascinating Wayspots of the Week, including a Purdue University cyclotron model tied to J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Stick Around For...
✅ The rise of "Spaghetti Nominations" and how hundreds of available submissions may be changing Wayfarer behavior.
✅ Chris and Jamal debate neighborhood signs, pergolas, benches, utility box art, trail markers, murals, and other gray-area nominations.
✅ A discussion on Scopely's impact on the Pokémon GO map and whether Wayfarer should stay out of game-specific decisions.
✅ Dad Jokes, Mom Jokes, Wayspots of the Week, and a preview of an upcoming discussion on what happens when a Wayfarer community goes rogue.

| 227. We’re Just Wayfarers | 24 May 2026 | 01:36:39 | |
This week Jamal is joined by special guest host Agent X as Chris is out this week, and the timing could not have been crazier. Just hours before recording, Niantic dropped a massive new Wayfinder rating system announcement that could completely reshape the future of reviewing, submissions, contributor rewards, and Wayfarer progression.
Joining the roundtable are community members JQN, Keller, and Winston representing longtime Ingress veterans, newer Wayfarers, rural players, PvP grinders, and everyday contributors whose voices aren’t always heard in the larger Wayfarer conversation. The crew dives deep into:
the current state of Wayfarer,
how the platform has evolved since OPR and Recon,
misconceptions about bans and reviewing,
S2 cells and map strategy,
rural gameplay challenges,
the loss of Recon in Ingress,
and what motivates people to keep building the map years later.
The conversation also gets surprisingly philosophical with debates about natural features, waterfalls, eligibility logic, reviewer behavior, and whether Wayfarer finally feels like it’s moving in the right direction again after years of uncertainty.

| 225. The Ambassador Blueprint | 10 May 2026 | 01:07:25 | |
This week Jamal and Chris kick things off with a brand-new intro before diving into some real-world Wayfarer conversations, from Raid Hour stories to a hilarious (and slightly questionable) discussion about fake nominations and why anything bought off Amazon is an immediate no-go.
They break down the announcement of Wayfarer Ambassador Cohort 5, highlighting six new ambassadors from around the world and what makes this group stand out from grinders with massive review counts to community-focused guides helping others level up.
The conversation evolves into a deeper discussion on what truly makes a great ambassador, including the importance of balancing experience with approachability, the value of “translators” who can simplify criteria, and the ultimate test: would you send a brand-new Wayfarer to this person for help?
They also explore Niantic’s potential shift toward a staggered ambassador system, comparing it to a hockey line change to preserve institutional knowledge while bringing in fresh voices.
To close things out, the guys jump into a fun “One’s Gotta Go: MLB Expansion Cities” debate featuring Charlotte, Nashville, Portland, and Montreal, plus the usual mix of Wayspot of the Week, Coal of the Week, and community shoutouts.

| 224. It’s Shocking | 03 May 2026 | 00:54:43 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into one of the most debated updates yet... AED PokéStops in Japan.
They break down what AEDs are, why Niantic may be adding them to the map, and the real-world impact this could have on player awareness and emergency preparedness. From clear pros like life-saving visibility and more stops… to concerns around safety, crowding, and unintended behavior, this one sparks a serious debate.
The conversation also expands into a bigger topic—should the Wayfarer map be global, or shaped by local communities? And is this even a Wayfarer issue at all… or just another example of the Pokémon GO team doing their own thing?
Plus:
A quick but important nomination tip: don’t mention “Wayspots” in your submissions

| 223. Confessions of a Cell Optimizer | 26 Apr 2026 | 01:08:11 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into a packed episode discussing whether Wayfinders are running out of quality POIs, and how location plays a major role—dense cities may be tapped out while growing suburbs still offer opportunity. Jamal shares a massive run of 19 approvals (17 live in-game) in under a week, sparking a debate on “stretching criteria” and the future of nominations.
The conversation shifts to S2 cell strategy, where both agree it’s not cheating—unless you’re manipulating pin placement outside the rules. They break down the difference between smart optimization and abuse, and Jamal introduces his “Confessions of a Cell Optimizer” segment, explaining how he maximized a local area into a fully optimized cluster.
They also explore the idea of “remove and replace” as areas redevelop, debating whether outdated Wayspots should be removed immediately or left until replacements are ready.
In lighter moments, the episode features a “One’s Gotta Go” gaming debate (PS5 vs PC vs Switch vs Mobile, with Xbox catching strays), standout Wayspots of the Week featuring incredible murals, and a clear Coal of the Week example highlighting what not to nominate (a PRP tree).
As always, the episode wraps with community shoutouts, patron love, and the reminder:

This week, Chris and Jamal kick things off with some fun tangents—from time being a construct to bold sports predictions and a dose of nostalgia with upcoming movie announcements—before diving into Wayfarer news, including reports of missing Wayspot images and how the community can help fix them.
In Topic #1, the guys take a deep dive into sports fields, breaking down how to properly maximize nominations through smart pin placement, understanding S2 cells, and why “a few meters” can make a big difference. They also debate dugouts, scoreboards, and how far is too far when it comes to maximizing a single complex.
In Topic #2, it’s time for Wayspot Madness 2026, where the community bracket delivers surprises, upsets, and a Cinderella run—culminating in restaurants taking home the title over libraries.
The episode wraps up with Wayspots of the Week, including a long-fought restaurant nomination success story and a perfectly framed mural submission, plus a Coal of the Week that highlights the importance of quality photos.

| 221. Blame eMiLy | 12 Apr 2026 | 01:14:07 | |
This week Jamal and Chris kick things off with a lively discussion around “Don’t Blame Emily,” diving into whether AI rejections are really the problem—or if nominators have gotten complacent. They explore how faster approvals and shifting reviewer dynamics have changed submission quality, and why adapting your nominations still matters.
The conversation expands into the impact of the Ingress community stepping back, and how that shift may have affected overall map standards in today’s “need more stops” era. From there, the guys reflect on how building Wayspots can transform local communities, turning quiet areas into active social hubs.
In Topic #2, Jamal and Chris tackle the debate of cleaning vs policing the map, discussing local control, global enforcement, and when removing Wayspots goes too far. It’s a thoughtful look at balancing map quality with player experience.
Plus, a fun One’s Gotta Go: BBQ Edition, some classic dad jokes, and standout submissions including two awesome murals and a not-so-great high school nomination for Coal of the Week.

| 219. Wayfarer Identity Crisis | 29 Mar 2026 | 01:22:18 | |
This week Jamal and Chris dig into the current state of Wayfarer and ask the big question: has the system become too easy—or is it finally working the way it should? They break down the shift from strict “gatekeeping” to a more open, fast-moving system, and debate whether community-driven approvals are helping or hurting overall quality.
The conversation then moves into one of the hottest topics right now: local vs global reviewing. Does local knowledge still matter most, or is global reviewing the key to speed and fairness? The guys also tackle the rise of “voyeur removals” and whether players should be removing Wayspots in areas they don’t even play in.
They wrap up the discussion by exploring what the “Wayfarer standard” really is today—and whether different players are playing by completely different definitions of that standard.

| 218 . Saying Goodbye | 22 Mar 2026 | 01:16:40 | |
This week Chris and Jamal kick off Episode 218 of the Wayspotters Podcast with some personal updates, including Chris preparing to start a new job and celebrating his son making a lacrosse rep team. After the catch-up, they dive into the latest Wayfarer and Niantic news.
The big topic this week is the pause of Operation Portal Recon (OPR). Chris and Jamal discuss Niantic Spatial’s announcement that OPR has been temporarily shut down and share their speculation about why it happened. Reports surfaced showing large-scale cheating, bots, and automated portal submissions creating thousands of fake reviews and portals. They explore how the abuse may have overwhelmed Niantic’s ability to manage the system, why OPR may stay offline for a long time, and what the future could look like for Ingress mapping and community review.
They also talk about what this pause could mean for Ingress players and the long-term health of the portal network, including concerns that without new portals the game could feel stale and lose player engagement.
On the Wayfarer side, the hosts highlight a major quality-of-life improvement: web submission drafts. The new system allows Wayfinders to create and store multiple nomination drafts, review photos and descriptions at home, and submit them later once everything is polished. Chris and Jamal explain why this could improve nomination quality, reduce “coal” submissions, and help reviewers overall—while noting the limitation that submissions still require available nomination slots.
The episode wraps up with Wayspot of the Week, featuring a striking globe installation in Dublin and an abstract art installation in Rockford, Illinois, followed by Coal of the Week, showcasing a great nomination ruined by using a watermarked photo pulled from a website.
Overall, the episode explores the evolving future of Wayfarer, the challenges of community-driven mapping systems, and how new tools might improve the quality of Wayspot nominations going forward.

| 217. What If Pokémon GO Couldn't Submit PokéStops? | 15 Mar 2026 | 01:27:14 | |
This week Chris and Jamal dig into a packed episode full of Wayfarer news, hot takes, and a lot of common-sense discussion. They cover the fix for the Pokémon GO nomination spacebar bug, the nearby map issue, Niantic Spatial pausing OPR and retiring Overclock, and the arrival of Wayfarer nomination drafts—an update they both see as one of the biggest quality-of-life improvements Wayfarer has had in a long time.
The main topic asks a bold question: what if Pokémon GO removed the ability to nominate POIs in-game and pushed all nominations through the Wayfarer website instead? What starts as a spicy hot take turns into a thoughtful conversation about better onboarding, higher-quality nominations, clearer expectations, and reducing the constant confusion from players who think they are nominating PokéStops instead of submitting Wayspots to Niantic’s larger database. Chris and Jamal weigh the pros and cons, from better education and fewer junk nominations to the risk of losing casual contributors and slowing map growth.
They also talk about whether Wayfarer may be entering a post-backlog era, with eMiLy filtering out more coal, review areas feeling wider, and nominations moving faster than ever. From there, they jump into a fun “One’s Gotta Go” debate featuring Pokémon, Mario, Call of Duty, and EA Sports, before wrapping up with two great Wayspots of the Week and a Coal of the Week that serves as a reminder that even a beautiful mural is still ineligible if it sits on K-12 school property.

| 216. The Math Ain't Mathing | 08 Mar 2026 | 01:03:30 | |
This week Chris and Jamal talk about a packed week of Wayfarer news, including the Pokémon GO nomination screen spacebar bug, a new 24-hour delay before upgrades can be applied, eMiLy returning to photo reviews, and fixes for missing monthly recap emails. They also share plans for Pokémon GO Fest in Chicago, talk about meeting listeners in person, and officially put out their invitation to connect with the Niantic team while they’re there.
The main discussion digs into a fascinating theory about Wayfarer review distances. After a nomination from a friend of the show appeared far outside the expected review radius, Chris and Jamal explore whether Niantic may have quietly expanded review areas while keeping them locked within each reviewer’s home country. They compare examples from across North America, weigh several possible explanations, and make the case that a larger review pool could be helping reduce backlog, speed up decisions, and keep the system moving more efficiently than before.
They also talk about the recent removal of questionable “couch” Power Spots and share advice for anyone trying to restore a legitimately removed Wayspot. From gathering proof and photos to treating the request like a brand-new nomination, they explain how to give the Wayfarer team the best possible case. To close things out, Chris teases the upcoming March Madness Wayspot bracket, Jamal gives a shoutout to Ingress agents he met in Charlotte, and the hosts reflect on how much better Wayfarer feels when strong nominations move through the system faster.

| 215. One Rule. Not Three | 01 Mar 2026 | 01:02:37 | |
This week Jamal and Chris get into a no-news week in Wayfarer (no eMiLy updates, no Ambassador news) while shouting out a wave of new listeners and Chris powering through sickness and a whole lot of Canadian snow to keep the weekly streak alive.
For Topic 1, the guys react to a forum post about a 30-day ban that spirals into a masterclass on what not to do—photos taken from inside the car, dashboard in frame, and using Google Maps images. From there, Jamal lays out his “If I ran Wayfarer for a day” list of instant 30-day ban offenses, from zero-effort submissions to fake trail markers, emoji-only titles, and more—plus the legendary return of the “Gazebo Bandit.”
For Topic 2, they bring it back to the basics with the three pillars every review should revolve around: Explore, Exercise, or Social. They break down what each category really means (and why nominations only need to hit one), including a passionate defense of restaurants as legitimate social spaces.
Then it’s time for One’s Gotta Go: Pizza Edition—New York vs Chicago deep dish vs Detroit vs Hawaiian—with some spicy takes ahead of Go Fest Chicago.
Finally, they wrap with Wayspots of the Week (a stunning stained glass memorial window and a Three Stooges tombstone) and Coal of the Week featuring a “McPokey Place” nomination that’s as bad as it sounds, plus a tease for an upcoming March Madness-style POI bracket.

| 214 . Wayfaregon Trail | 22 Feb 2026 | 01:06:49 | |
This week on the podcast, Chris and Jamal talk about the current state of Wayfarer, including eMiLy still being down, the lack of updates around the Ambassador program, and growing frustration with Recon especially among the “I want to do both” crowd who feel stuck waiting for meaningful changes.
They also dive into a great community discussion around trail markers, breaking down what actually makes them eligible. The key takeaway: it’s not the marker itself it’s the trail. Chris and Jamal explain how to position trail markers as anchors for a larger point of interest, and why details like trail names, locations, and official maps can make or break your nomination.
Finally, with bad weather keeping everyone inside, they share productive ways to stay engaged with Wayfarer reviewing nominations, exploring the new Wayfarer map, digging into forum discussions, and revisiting past rejections for better resubmissions.

| 213. Where Did All the Gatekeepers Go? | 15 Feb 2026 | 01:23:37 | |
This week Jamal and Chris talk about recent Wayfarer news, including eMiLy’s photo-edit outage, ongoing email issues, and a reminder about properly handling location edits through help chat instead of inching Wayspots around the map. They also react to some listener comments before diving into the main topics.
In Topic #1, they discuss a “Measure Twice, Cut Once” approach to nominations, introducing a practical pre-submission checklist. They cover the importance of strong photos, clear unique features, accessibility details, cultural or historical context, and smart use of supporting images to answer reviewer questions before they’re even asked.
In Topic #2, they explore whether reviewers are actually getting better—or if the so-called gatekeepers have simply disappeared. They break down possible reasons for faster approvals, including improved submitter quality, shifts in the reviewer pool, and potential backend or automation changes. They also challenge the “gatekeeper” label, talk about community bias, and ask whether quality could drift if approvals stay this fast.

| 212. Maps Don’t Lie | 12 Feb 2026 | 01:19:13 | |
This week Chris and Jamal talk about the latest Wayfarer news, including issues with map sync delays that are causing approved Wayspots, edits, and removals to take hours (or even more than a day) to appear in games. Niantic is currently running manual syncs while investigating the problem, and the hosts also highlight a community comment suggesting that player-submitted Wayspots should replace some of the newly generated street PokéStops.
The bulk of the episode focuses on a deep dive into the newly released Wayfarer Map. Chris and Jamal review what the first version can currently do, then walk through a long list of known issues pulled from forum discussions — such as delayed live data, broken location searches, visual problems with Google Maps layers, missing Street View, translation gaps, and the inability to filter certain Wayspot types. They also discuss features they hope appear in future updates, including improved zoom controls, filters for personal contributions, the ability to edit locations directly from the map, plugin support, and results from Jamal’s recent experiment using the tool.
Finally, the hosts evaluate Niantic’s 2025–2026 Wayfarer roadmap and measure progress so far. They run through each promised improvement — from appeals and distance changes to quality surfacing, leaderboards, and rating systems — noting that only the Wayfarer Map and web submissions have fully launched so far. Chris argues that despite many items still pending, these two features are major wins and, when broken down mathematically, put the team roughly on pace if development continues steadily through 2026.

| 211. Niantic is getting busy! | 01 Feb 2026 | 01:34:46 | |
In this week’s episode, Jamal and Chris dive into Niantic’s controversial experiment of adding PokéStops directly to street corners and bus stops in select U.S. areas, weighing the potential benefits for underserved communities against concerns around criteria, fairness, safety, and visual clutter. They break down what this could mean for Wayfarer’s philosophy, reviewer morale, and future map growth—plus what success (or failure) of the test might signal long-term.
Jamal and Chris also spotlight Niantic’s newly launched Wayfarer Map, now the default landing page for Wayfinders, which lets players search the globe, filter by game-specific objects, and distinguish between community-submitted and Niantic-added locations. They discuss how the detailed info panels, satellite views, and reporting tools could transform scouting, improve nomination accuracy, and influence how players explore new areas—while also touching on early questions around privacy, data accuracy, and long-term gameplay impact.

| 210. Reporting From The Front Lines | 25 Jan 2026 | 01:17:06 | |
This week Chris and Jamal dive headfirst into fresh Wayfarer movement, community chatter, and one of the trickiest topics explorers face: when — and how — to report problematic Wayspots.
The duo opens with some classic banter before jumping into the latest Wayfarer News, including long-stuck nominations finally reaching resolution, speculation on when 2026 Wayfarer Ambassador applications might open, and why some Niantic reviews seem to clear faster than others.
From there it’s on to From the Comments! as the hosts react to listener feedback about restaurant nominations, broken Wayfarer tools, and Jamal’s infamous tinfoil-hat theory about shifting approval speeds.
The main discussion centers on a hot forum topic: “To report, or not report?” Chris and Jamal break down why cleaning up the map matters, what actually qualifies for removal, and where things get murky with private residential property, emergency services locations, nonexistent Wayspots, and borderline cases that are bad — but not necessarily abuse. They also tackle what real abuse looks like, how to recognize it, and whether AI and suspicious photos should raise red flags.
Plus… the Professor steps in for a heartfelt moment of tough love about reporting correctly — hand-holding included.
Let’s explore.

| 209. We’re back for Season 5! | 18 Jan 2026 | 01:27:53 | |
In this week’s episode, Jamal and Chris break down everything kicking off Season 5 of Wayfarer, starting with the surprising speed-up that has nominations flying through in hours instead of weeks.
They explore what this means for queues, backlogs, and overall Explorer behavior, and whether Niantic might be testing something under the hood.
The conversation then shifts to the big Quality Question — are these faster decisions still accurate, or are reviewers becoming more lenient as systems evolve?

| 208. Is Wayfarer Easier Now? | 11 Jan 2026 | 01:12:51 | |
This week, Jamal & Chris dig into the first recorded episode of 2026 and the Season 4 finale! We look back at the incredible growth of the show over the past four years and share what’s ahead for Season 5. Then we break down the surprising Wayfarer update that caused years-old failed uploads to suddenly appear in Niantic review — some only half-uploaded — and what this means for reviewers.
We also share our personal 2026 Wayfarer commitments, including Chris’ push for WDD Top 35, nomination and edit goals, and Jamal’s plan to boost reviews, re-engage positively on the forums, and bring in new guests. Finally, we dive into the growing trend of previously “impossible” nominations getting approved — restaurants, neighborhood signs, barbershops, business artwork — and discuss whether this shift is good for Wayfarer or just blurring the grey areas even more.
Here’s What We’re Talking About:
Kicking off 2026 with the Season 4 finale
Niantic’s “attic clean-out” that released years-old failed uploads
What half-uploaded nominations mean for reviewers
Chris’ 2026 commitments: WDD Top 35, nominations, edits & more
Jamal’s 2026 commitments: daily reviews, forum presence & new guests
The rise of “previously impossible” approvals
Restaurants, signs, barbershops & business artwork in today’s grey zones

| 206. Wayfarer Year in Review Part #1 | 28 Dec 2025 | 01:17:40 | |
On this week’s episode of the Wayspotters Podcast, Jamal and Chris hit rewind on 2025 and take a month-by-month look at how Wayfarer really changed — not just through updates and announcements, but through reviewer behavior, community strategy, and shifting trust in the system.
This isn’t a “Niantic did this” or “Scopely did that” episode. It’s about us — the reviewers, nominators, veterans, and newcomers who adapted as the rules stayed mostly the same, but the reality around them didn’t.
In Part 1, we cover January through June 2025, including:
Reviewer fatigue and growing inconsistency early in the year
How supporting info, upgrades, and edits quietly lost trust
The moment skepticism replaced benefit-of-the-doubt
Community adaptation through Discords, strategy sharing, and mentorship
The impact of Niantic’s games business being acquired by Scopely
Think of this episode as the Wayfarer yearbook — fewer signatures, more opinions.
Here’s what we’re talking about:
Why 2025 felt different in Wayfarer — even before anything officially changed
Reviewer fatigue, inconsistency, and the rise of “will this pass?” thinking
How supporting information became the real battleground
The growing distrust in edits, upgrades, and appeals
When skepticism replaced benefit-of-the-doubt
How the community adapted through strategy, Discords, and peer leadership
The ripple effects of Niantic’s games business being acquired by Scopely

| 201. World Wide Wayfarer | 23 Nov 2025 | 01:21:56 | |
This week on the Wayspotters Podcast, Chris and Jamal dive into one of the biggest updates in recent Wayfarer history: Web Submissions v1 is officially live! The guys break down what’s new, how it changes the nomination flow, and why the community is buzzing — from multi-photo support to new radius warnings to the debate around whether in-voting nominations should appear on the map.
They then tackle the big-picture question: Are we ready for a global flood of new submitters? With the door now cracked open for future cross-game participation, they explore the good (more diverse Wayspots, rural growth), the bad (queue spikes, casual chaos), and the spicy (abuse risks, PRP issues, gym manipulation attempts).
Packed with insights, laughs, and classic Jamal-and-Chris energy, Episode 201 is a must-listen for Wayfinders everywhere.
Here’s What We’re Talking About:
Wayfarer Web Submission v1 overview and first impressions
What’s new: multi-photo support, radius warnings, optional categories, improved duplicate map
Community reactions and ambassador insights
Should in-voting nominations appear on the map?
The potential global flood of new submitters
Pros: diversity, rural growth, more eligible discoveries
Cons: queue spikes, casual chaos, remote abuse concerns
“The Spicy”: PRP issues, fake Wayspots, location manipulation, gym-creation attempts
What Niantic must get right before expansion: onboarding, automated rejection, better pin tools, education

| 198. Did We Actually Learn Anything? | 02 Nov 2025 | 02:16:08 | |
In this episode, Chris and Jamal break down Niantic’s latest Wayfarer AMA — and ask the big question: did we actually learn anything new?
The hosts review key updates like the upcoming Wayfarer Map and Web Submissions, giving Wayfinders more control to view, filter, and submit nominations directly online. They also discuss the return of “Generic Business” rejections, the promise of better reviewer education in 2026, and the ongoing mystery behind that claimed 99% accuracy rate.
It’s not all bad news — the Wayfarer Map looks genuinely exciting — but much of the AMA reads like “we’re still exploring.” The crew dives into what Niantic got right, what still feels like PR filler, and how the community has reacted so far.
Tune in as we separate what’s progress, what’s promise, and what’s just… more waiting.

| 197. The Future Is on the Corner | 26 Oct 2025 | 01:17:19 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into one of the most unexpected Wayfarer updates we’ve seen in a while — Niantic’s new “Street Corner and Bus Stop Experiment” happening in France, Italy, and Spain.
The guys break down:
What these new “Niantic-generated” Wayspots mean for the Wayfarer system.
Whether this is a bug, a test, or a hint of a larger criteria change.
How this experiment could affect reviewers and nominators, especially when it comes to “generic” locations or player expectations for quality and significance.
The potential upside for rural and low-density areas, which could benefit from more accessible PokéStops and gameplay opportunities.
And, of course, what safeguards Niantic might need to prevent spam or confusion in the review queue.
They also cover this week’s Wayfarer news, including reports that Emily may be down again.

| 196 . Inquiring Minds Want to Know | 19 Oct 2025 | 01:24:06 | |
This week, Jamal and Chris dive into the latest Wayfarer updates and tackle some spicy community topics head-on. They discuss Tintino’s long-awaited post about test Wayspots in France, Italy, and Spain, and the recent Pokémon GO level rebalance that (thankfully) didn’t change Wayfarer access.
The boys also revisit last week’s conversation about the Wayfarer forums — clarifying their stance on why sometimes it’s best for new Explorers to “lurk before you leap.” They call for more tact and positivity from community voices (including Ambassadors), and suggest a new space where players can safely ask the Wayfarer team questions without being dogpiled by forum regulars.
Then it’s on to the big topic of the week: AMA Questions!
Chris and Jamal go through some of the most interesting submissions before voting closes — and offer their own thoughts on what they’d like to see answered.
