Lanterns S1E6 "Bad Optics"23 Sep 202602:25:21

Yet another change of pace this week, with this complicated, somber, surprisingly funny, intriguing, and moving episode, as we see how John has changed in the 10 years since turning down the Green Lantern ring — and how he deals with the mysterious death of his former mentor/antagonist.

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:

  • Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers’ minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It’s beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen’s innies.
  • Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
  • Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen.
  • IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.
  • Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy.

Silo S3E6-1016 Sep 202602:21:10

Wow, this slow-burn show picked up the pace in the second half of season three, and we’re totally digging it (pun!). Thrilling to see so many questions answered, and new ones raised, and to find out that the final season isn’t too far away — July 9, 2007! Join Jason, Veronica, and Amelie as we get into all the details of the second half of Silo season 3, maybe our favorite segment of this series so far.

Lanterns S1E5 "Lights Out"15 Sep 202602:07:29

Explosive, destructive episode this week as all the tension that’s been building up in this series finally comes to a head. It really felt like a season finale, didn’t it? Which makes us even more curious to find out what they’ll do with the final three episodes. Lots to talk about for this one though, so join us as we talk it out!

Lanterns S1E4 "The Weenie"09 Sep 202601:54:12

Compulsory nude figure drawing, a sudden orbital vaporizing laser, and a hi-tech,  futuristic slaughterhouse are just a few of the things that made this episode odd as hell, but never dull! Join Kirk, Jim, and Jason as we talk it out!

What’s next for Wax Episodic?

As I (Jason) mentioned on the podcast, the plan is to go on hiatus for awhile, and come back for the new HBO show, Lanterns, premiering August 16.

Lanterns is an upcoming new superhero/detective series, but I’m most excited about it because of where it’s airing (because HBO has been producing high-quality shows for years), and also the kick-ass bunch of creators and actors who are involved: Lanterns is headed up by Damon Lindelof (LOST, The Leftovers, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), and Tom King (Mister Miracle, The Vision), stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and co-stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle).

Premise: Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers. The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.

P.S. There’s a chance we’ll be back with a surprise or two before Lanterns. Either way keep us in your feed and we’ll talk to you soon!

Lanterns S1E3 "OutKast"01 Sep 202601:54:58

So great to get some of John’s backstory this week, making it much more clear why his parents set him on this years-long course to become a Green Lantern. A thoughtfully told, thought-provoking tale, and Jim and Kirk are here to talk it out.

Lanterns S1E2 "Trust Fall"25 Aug 202602:05:35

Things are getting complicated this week, with details about who these aliens are and why they came to Rushville, Nebraska, and questions about what William Macon is up to, why Hal doesn’t want to report to the Guardians, how John can create a little green birdie sidekick, and a ton more. We do our best this ep to lay it all out for you!

Lanterns S1E1 "Pilot"18 Aug 202602:06:20

Lanterns opens strong with an episode that manages to slip in a ton of expositional Green Lantern lore, an intriguing small town mystery, a bunch colorful characters all pushing against each other’s edges (with some fantastic actors playing them), all while asking some deeper questions about human nature, and even throwing in a few jokes that actually made us laugh. Yeah, we’re in!

Intro to Lanterns07 Aug 202601:11:10

We’re back for another new show! Yes, this show is about members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force whose members wear rings that give them powers (and we love that). But there’s a lot more about this series that has us intrigued. Like, why is it also apparently a gritty murder mystery set in rural Nebraska? And what does it mean that HBO, the king of prestige TV, picked it up, with three legendary writers at the helm: Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (LOST), and Tom King (The Vision)?

That’s more than enough to have us—Jason, Kirk, and Jim—super excited for Lanterns. Join us for a spoiler-lite introduction to the series, followed by a more detailed dive into the trailer that recently debuted at Comic-Con.

Silo S3E1-504 Aug 202602:08:09

Surprise! Here’s Jason, Veronica, and Amelie with coverage of the first five episodes of Apple TV’s dystopian sci-fi mystery, Silo! Synopsis: In a dystopian future where a community exists in a giant silo hundreds of stories deep underground, ten thousand people live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. But some wonder if they’ve been lied to about why this silo was created and why they’re there.

Severance S2E10 "Cold Harbor"28 Jun 202601:44:03

The season really went out in grand fashion, with Innie and Outie Mark in a fierce argument with one another, a boisterous in-office marching band celebrating Mark’s completion of the Cold Harbor file, and a climactic battle between Drummond, Lorne of Mammalian’s Nurturable, and Mark, among other things. I mean, the unpredictable whimsy of this show is sublime :) And of course Karen and I had a blast talking it out, as always. Enjoy!

We sincerely thank all of you who followed along with us for Severance! Many of you guys have asked for coverage for years now, and I’m really glad we finally got around to it. It was a blast, and we appreciate you listening along, and special thanks to those of you who wrote in and sent voice messages. Super fun. Can’t wait to watch along with you guys for season 3!

Severance S2E9 "The After Hours"20 Jun 202601:33:20

So much heartbreak in this episode, between Gretchen breaking things off with Innie Dylan, Burt and Irving separating, Mark suffering and frustrated, and we even felt bad for Helena being oppressed by her father and Milchick being humiliated by Drummond (devour feculence, Drummond!). Lots to talk about, and I (Jason) am happy to be joined by my good friend Eric this week, with whom it was a pleasure to podcast. Karen’s on vacay (not in Widow’s Bay) and she’ll be back for the finale!

Other shows we cover on this podcast:

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted shows:

  • Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), and with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
  • Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It’s sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen!
  • IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, Pennywise stalks the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elme Street-esque horror.

Severance S2E8 "Sweet Vitriol"13 Jun 202601:08:21

Of course as we suspected, viewing this episode through our analytical podcaster’s lens we found a lot to dig into and appreciate about this episode and it’s implications for Harmony Cobel’s character, the series in general, and what it says about the real world. Still wasn’t our favorite though.

Severance S2E7 "Chikhai Bardo"05 Jun 202601:34:51

What a surprising, beautiful, romantic, tragic, f#$ked up episode this week. We found it especially impactful seeing (and feeling) Mark and Gemma’s relationship and life together come alive onscreen, and then so sad to see it destroyed by Lumon.

Severance S2E4 "Woe's Hollow"16 May 202601:41:45

Interesting how with just a simple change of scenery, all the weirdness of this show just kind of disappears. Just kidding, MDR’s excursion to the wintery and bleakly beautiful Woe’s Hollow was weird as fuck, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. We’re delighted to be joined this episode by Rachel, who’s been granted provisional access to this audio experience. Please enjoy her insights equally.

Severance S2E3 "Who Is Alive?"09 May 202601:15:31

An odd, lovable episode this week, with a lot of small movement on various fronts. I mean, I suppose you could describe like 75% of all Severance episodes that way…. This one had goats in it, which does narrow it down. Some.

Severance S2E2 "Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig"01 May 202601:26:41

Is it weird that when we get an episode exclusively set in the outside world that we miss the office? Well, we did find a ton to love about this one too, because this show is always mysterious, funny, beautiful, and thought provoking, among other things.

Severance S2E1 "Hello, Ms. Cobel"24 Apr 202601:24:58

Severance S1E5 "The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design"13 Mar 202601:27:35

The Severed workers are finally starting to question Lumon and show a little bit of that defiant, rebellious spirit, in part because of (of all things) Dr. Ricken Lazlo Hale's The You You Are. Maybe that guy’s actually onto something….

Fallout S2E8 "The Strip"07 Feb 202602:12:04

Okie dokey, that’s it for Fallout season 2! We thought it was a great season finale, packed to the rads with answers (the Enclave is behind it all, and the President is one of them), more questions (have Hank and Steph been a thing for 200 years or what?), and as f$%ked up and funny as ever.

Thanks from all three of us to everyone for joining us for this series! What a freaking blast it is, right? It was so much fun to cover, and we especially appreciate those of you who wrote and called in (but we love all of ya).

I (Jason) hope you guys all stick around as Karen and I start with Apple TV’s Severance next week. We’re going back to the beginning and the plan is to cover the whole series, episode-by-episode, spoiler free. What is Severance, you ask? It’s a trippy workplace sci-fi thriller where employees surgically split their work and personal memories, creating two separate versions of themselves. It starts as a clever corporate experiment and develops into an unsettling mystery about identity, control, and rebellion. Smart, stylish, funny, and quietly disturbing, with an incredible cast — Adam Scott, Zach Cherry (!), Britt Lower, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. Hosted by Jason and Karen.

And if you’re looking for something else to dig into, highly recommend checking out any of the other shows this podcast covers. They are…

Fallout S2E7 "The Handoff"31 Jan 202601:37:09

This show hitting close to home for anyone else? It’s another fantastic episode, with Steph’s escape from U.S.-occupied Canada, and a Cooper-Maximus-Thaddeus team-up. We just wish the real world would stop moving closer to Fallout and start seeing it as the warning it is.  PS We love you, Canada.

Fallout S2E6 "The Other Player"24 Jan 202601:51:13

Post-apocalyptic protagonists must pursue perilous paths, proving problematic. Power plays like a profligate poker chip. Past promises provoke painful perceptions of once proud parentage. Pivotal protagonists probe personal principles, prioritize protection, but postpone peace. (With thanks to listener Collin Stilwell.)

Pluribus S1E9 "La Chica o El Mundo"28 Dec 202501:59:21

If only Manousos had made it to New Mexico a few weeks earlier as he intended, then he and Carol might have been on the same page — but it was fun to see them argue about it and then ultimately get there, and we’re very much looking forward to season two to find out what happens next. Karen and I are thrilled to be joined by David — a huge Vince Gilligan fan, a Podcastica host, and Karen’s hubs — to talk it out!

Thanks everyone for joining us for this show! Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Karen and I will be back for Severance at some point, possibly in February, and we may check out a Vince Gilligan-written episode or two of The X-Files in the meantime. And if you’re looking for something else to dig into, highly recommend checking out any of the other shows this podcast covers.

Fallout S2E2 "The Golden Rule"25 Dec 202501:26:25

Another killer episode, with Norm posing as a genetically engineered supermanager, Hank’s montage of exploding mice brains, Lucy apparently recounting all of A Christmas Carol to Cooper against his will, or the tragic story of Maximus’ losing his parents, among other things. Join Kasi and Jason as we talk it out on this twisted Christmas Eve. Happy holidays!

Pluribus S1E8 "Charm Offensive"20 Dec 202501:39:42

IT: Welcome to Derry S1E8 "Winter Fire"17 Dec 202502:14:52

NOTE: Pennywise struck again and totally d*#ked Shawns audio in this one, but we fixed it back up! 🤡🎈

An exciting finale that mostly delivered on what we asked for: A satisfying conclusion with some intriguing possibilities for the future of this series. Nice!

Thanks to all of you from both Shawn and Jason for taking this ride with us! It turned out better than we both hoped, and we loved the back-and-forth with many of you guys along the way. Should Welcome to Derry be renewed for a second season, we plan to be back talking about it again!

Until then, please check out one or more of the other shows we cover. I (Jason) am so pleased with how each and every one is turning out, and I’m sure at least some of you would enjoy one or more of them. They are….

Pluribus S1E7 "The Gap"14 Dec 202501:30:13

Such a beautiful episode, a contrast in wish-fullfilment and despair, distraction and purpose, alien and natural, and so much more, all told with almost no dialog. Karen and I really dug it. Join us as we talk it through.

Pluribus S1E6 "HDP"06 Dec 202502:10:17

It’s a Vegas fantasy, baby! Super fun episode this week, with some juicy new details revealed by the individual formerly known as John Cena. And Karen and I are stoked to be joined by Chris and Jason from the Talking Dead podcast to talk it out. Because this show brings up so very many questions, and what two better guys to ponder them with than those guys?

Pluribus S1E3 "Grenade"15 Nov 202501:43:05

We thought this ep was a deeper exploration of Carol’s character, and how she’s not only immune to the pod people virus, but also to allowing herself to feel happy even when everything is going well. Hmm, maybe that is why she’s immune to the virus (except Air Force One-guy doesn’t seem to have that problem). Anyway, this ep was a joy to watch, and to podcast on, and we hope you enjoy!
