Welcome to Episode 156 of the Warrior Words podcast!
For much of my life, I think I just went through the motions in my faith: doing things out of duty, checking the boxes, punching my timecard. Can anyone relate? I had this mindset that God needed to hit me over the head with a 2x4 or flash a neon sign to get my attention. I'm sad to say, I got that 2x4 a few times. Preaching on the Gospel of John, Chapter 1, discussing the first apostles, my priest talked about a simple line in verse 39. A line many people may not pay attention to: "It was about 4 in the afternoon." Why is that there? In his interpretation, my priest said that it was a significant enough event that they wanted to remember the moment they met the Messiah. Then he asked us to think about when we first encountered Jesus, really met Him. I'd have to say, for me, it was when I began to homeschool my kids and teach them the faith. It's not that I didn't have faith or believe before that. It's that I didn't internalize it. It wasn't personal. So, no wonder I needed that 2x4. In this week's episode, I talk about listening to the Holy Spirit. We can't truly hear the Spirit's whispering if we're not paying attention. I share part of my story of hearing the Holy Spirit, paying attention, and eventually listening.

To kick off our stories this year, I am starting with one of my own. Are you familiar with the term: "The Body of Christ?" Jesus said that He was the vine and we are the branches. That speaks to me of a divine connection to form a body. A body, human or a grapevine, is connected and has many members or parts. And I love this connection between Christ and us. But I got to experience the design of the Body of Christ in action during the month of December. And, in this case, this body spanned multiple states. Join me as I share the beauty I experienced at the hands of several members of the Body of Christ.

Sometimes we are able to fix it - make amends - and sometimes, we can't. At least not the way we might want to fix it. This week, I speak with a woman who said some harsh words and made a decision for which she had some regret. And before they had a chance to come face-to-face, something awful happened. Like so many times on this podcast, Kylie took that situation and changed her life. Instead of wallowing in the "why," she started asking, "What now?" That perspective shift, and her developing faith in God, put her on a path to learn from this situation - to find beauty in her suffering - and to use it to help other women through coaching and spiritual direction. Cancer is a disease of older people, right? Sadly, this is not true. Children, teens, and young adults are being diagnosed more and more. What do you do if you're the only one you know who is undergoing cancer treatment as a young adult with a baby at home? There are no support groups. There's no one to contact who is currently in treatment or has survived for you to connect with. Now, there are online groups for just about anything you can imagine, but 10, 15, or 20 years ago? Not-so-much. April navigated this difficult time in her life in a world without much social media and no local groups for women her age. But she didn't let it stop her! She instead, allowed it to light a fire - a fire that would burn and grow into a wildfire supporting women 50ish or younger who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Tune in to learn what she did, and continues to do, with that fire!

Being a single mom is hard. Being the single mom of five boys is harder. I'm pretty sure we've all heard about the concept of free will, but just in case, it's the gift from God that allows us to make our own decisions. I used the word 'gift' intentionally because sometimes - usually when someone doesn't behave the way we want them to behave - we don't see it as the gift it is. Kerri experienced that several years ago when her husband made a decision, using his free will, that impacted the lives of many people. In this episode, she admits to wanting God to change her husband's mind - thus taking away his free will. I believe we have all experienced something like this. Are you a planner? Do you like to have every detail accounted for, and basically like to have it your way? Do you ever pray like you're at the Burger King drive-through? Well, as much as we may not like it, God does not answer prayers like Burger King offers to let you have it your way. Through a series of medical challenges, I've discovered (to no one's surprise) that God's orchestrations are better than my plans. And while this particular orchestration is not how I wanted it, or would have planned it myself, I am seeing that, as usual, He is right. So, while this episode was meant to be an update with some practical information, it turned into another reminder - mostly for myself - that His thoughts are above my thoughts, and His ways are higher than my ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). I hope there are some nuggets in here for you as well. Plus, I did still include the practical information.
