I have found that to be true in my life and my home. Some of these benefits (that get a lot of attention) include: a home that’s easier to clean an aesthetically beautiful home the ease of living in a home with less being able to have people over and not worry about a mess But, there are also other benefits. Perhaps even more important benefits like the impact buying less has on the environment. And these benefits are encapsulated in the topic of sustainable minimalism that I discuss on my show this week with a fellow minimalism podcaster. Stephanie Seferian is a former teacher-turned full-time podcast host of The Sustainable Minimalists podcast. She’s also the author of the non-fiction book Sustainable Minimalism and is an avid distance runner and a lover of fiction. Stephanie lives just outside of Boston with her two daughters, a yellow Labrador Retriever, 10,000-ish bees, and a husband who loves to compost almost as much as she. I loved getting to geek out with another minimalist and we shared some really great moments of honesty and human-ness. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What led Stephanie to her path of minimalism How sustainable minimalism is different than main stream minimalism Tips for diving deeper into sustainable minimalism Moments when Stephanie felt like she messed up and what she did about it Simple house rules that make living with less easier ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** Who says Halloween has to be filled with plastic trinkets, decorations, and disposable costumes to be fun? Not me! The sad fact is that on average, Americans buy $3.4 billion worth of costumes every year and most of those will be thrown out after just one use. In the UK, an estimated 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated from throwaway Halloween costumes. The decor that we collectively put up in our homes isn’t much better. Between Halloween and New Year’s, Americans throw away 25% more trash during the holiday season, which amounts to an extra 25 million tons of garbage. A significant portion of that comes from decorations. We can do better. Plus, when we are intentional about the items we use in our homes and to dress up, we can cut back on clutter, bring more attention to how we are celebrating, and enjoy it all a lot more. This episode of Wannabe Minimalist will also help you discover: 6 ideas for getting costumes and decor (without buying new) Non-plastic decoration ideas for both the inside and outside of your home Simple costume ideas you can find in your closet How to make costumes the easy and sustainable way Several ideas for plastic free goodies for Trick or Treaters ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** For a long time women have been fed messages that they can (and need to) “bounce back” after pregnancy. It’s as if growing a human is a temporary inconvenience and your body should snap back into place like a rubber band that has been stretched out and is now allowed to recoil freely. At most, we’re told that things should be “back to normal” at 6 weeks after birth, but for many women that is not the case. In fact, the frightening statistic is that “in 2018, there were 17 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births in the U.S. — a ratio more than double that of most other high-income countries.” And what’s more, 52% of those deaths occurred postpartum. Sadly, we do not talk about postpartum healing enough - thankfully postpartum depression is getting some time in the spotlight - but all mothers need time to heal and the right resources to do so. That’s why I was thrilled to chat with my expert guest on Wannabe Minimalist this week. Maranda Bower is the CEO and Founder of Postpartum University®, supporting both professionals and mothers in health and whole-body healing. She is a renowned expert and top educator in the fields of functional nutrition and coaching in relation to postpartum and nicknamed the “Womb Whisperer”. Maranda has also been named as a best-selling author, is an international speaker, and has appeared in over 50+ publications. We dive into so many fascinating topics and I am ashamed to say that I was not as educated on this topic as I feel I should have been - since I am a mother and have been through the postpartum phase. buries my face in my hands. But that all changes today! I learned a lot (as well as gained an appreciation for my own experience) and I know you will too. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How to define the postpartum phase The warning signs to look out for postpartum Why decluttering is essential for postpartum life What we can learn from other cultures about postpartum healing How to be an advocate for other moms in the postpartum phase ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? And it’s not surprising. There are a lot of similarities when it comes to the stuff in our home. Savers might have less items or choose to DIY more. Spenders often have more decor or seasonal items, trendier pieces or just more in general. Often feeling overwhelmed by our stuff goes hand in hand with feeling stressed about the number in our bank accounts. That’s why I love having personal finance experts on my podcast. This week, I was thrilled to speak with Patrina Dixon about taking control of our finances so we can live our lives to the fullest. As we discuss on the show, personal finance is personal so I love getting to learn from other people about what has worked on their personal journey. Patrina is a Certified Financial Educational Instructor, International Best Selling Author and Speaker. She is the Founder and CEO of It’$ My Money®️. Patrina has been featured in Black Enterprise, Yahoo Finance, Real Simple, Fox61 and has been featured as a financial influencer by Experian. She attended University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business and holds a financial management certification from Cornell University. Her most notable roles are that of a wife and mom. We had an awesome conversation and toward the end, I ask her for an example of how she rewards herself. You might be surprised by her answer, but even more surprised by how I respond. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How to approach a budget in a more fun way Why it’s so important to look at our values when it comes to money Tips for including kids in financial matters Practical ways to dig out of a financial dilemma What you can do to build a life you love on a budget you can afford ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Guess what…that’s actually a good thing. Hear me out...even though strong-willed kids are spirited and courageous, they strive to learn things for themselves instead of just accepting what others say. While we know deep down that these are great qualities as they grow up and become more self-sufficient young adults, it can be extremely challenging for parents to be continually challenged. It’s hard to be patient and parents of strong-willed children often talk about struggling to keep their cool or their sanity. That’s why I am thrilled to have our guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show this week. Danielle Bettmann is a Positive-Discipline certified coach for parents of strong-willed kids age 1-7 and host of the Failing Motherhood podcast. She guides parents to cultivate cooperation, extend their patience and get on the same page. A teacher by trade and mentor by strengths, her passion is to be a translator between adult + child, helping parents crack the code of their child's personality, find more sanity and strategies, and be kind AND firm at the same time. We connected on several levels including some of the crazy toys we’ve gotten suckered into purchasing. I love her approach to raising children and her journey toward minimalism is incredibly interesting. I don't always get to chat with people about minimalism AND another area of expertise so we geek out for a little bit on it. All good stuff and we get into some really good tactics that will not only help you with your children (if you have them), but with the other relationships in your life too like your partner, boos, friends, PTA parents…you name it! This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How Danielle overcame hardships with minimalism Tips for living a good life with less (and what that means) What to do if your strong-willed child pushes your buttons Tips for buying toys for long-term vs. short-term goals Ideas for getting your co-parent on the same page ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Ep 115: The Key to Building an Ethical Capsule Wardrobe with Kristi Soomer25 Aug 202200:33:52
Capsule wardrobes are super popular and it makes sense! Dressing with fewer clothes actually makes it easier to get ready in the morning, tap into your personal style, and love everything you own. If you’re ready to take it to the next level - or you want to help the environment while dressing better - these tips will help you build an ethical and sustainable capsule wardrobe of your dreams. Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links): Get more show notes and additional free resources at wannabeclutterfree.com/115 Discover my favorite resources here Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** The fashion industry is accountable for 8%–10% of overall greenhouse gas emissions. Wow! That’s a big impact our closets and shopping habits are making. The good news is that we can do something about it. That’s one of the reasons I am so passionate about capsule wardrobes. They help you find your personal style and stress less when getting ready. On top of that they are better for the environment because you are buying less and using what you own for longer. But, there's another way we can cut back on that giant number when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions - we can buy ethical and sustainable clothing. My guest this week is an expert in this field. In fact, she started her own brand and has now become a BCorp which we dive into on this episode. Kristi Soomer is the founder and CEO of Encircled, a Canadian-made line of versatile sustainably made clothing that helps women streamline their wardrobes. Inspired by her love of travel and dislike for checking a bag, Kristi started Encircled in 2012 while she was working as a management consultant. At the time she was traveling over 100,000 miles a year and found there was a lack of travel clothes that blended style with function made on the kitchen floor of her condo using a sewing machine she found on Craigslist. Kristi has grown Encircled into a seven-figure business that was named a Certified BCorp in 2018. But, that doesn't always mean it’s easy. Especially because most of us go into it without any idea of what we are in for. There is no manual or game plan that you’re handed when you become a parent. Sure, there are books to read and parent groups you can join, and while those things make it easier, we can still be left wondering if we are doing the right things for our kids. That’s why I am excited to be talking with Rachel Bailey about being the best parents we can be - without the guilt and expectation to be perfect parents. It’s not about doing more, or setting unrealistic expectations. It’s all about being real - with yourself and your children. Rachel Bailey is a Parenting Specialist who has been serving families for over a decade. Besides being a mother of two, she also has a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, a certification in Positive Discipline, and has provided services as an ADHD Coach, in-home mentor, and therapist. Through her podcast, programs, and services Rachel teaches parents hands-on tools for raising responsible, resilient children...while reducing the stress and guilt in parents' lives. This one was an eye-opener for me and I loved chatting with her. I know you’re going to love it too! This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The truth behind what long-game parenting is How the long game is different than band-aid parenting Tips for getting your children on board when they resist your direction How she looks at big emotions (it’s different than what I thought) Ways we can help our children with attachment issues ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Wannabe Minimalist Community - come join my private group filled with amazing people just like you who are on their journey toward minimalism and simplifying ********************** With conversations about mental health on the rise, it’s incredibly important that we start helping our children learn how to recognize their emotions early in life. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1 in 3 of all adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder. That number is just staggering, and the trend has been on the rise for a while, so it’s up to us parents to give our children - and ourselves the tools to help us cope. That’s why I am thrilled to have my two guests on the podcast this week - that’s right…not just one expert, but TWO! Lynn McLaughlin is a proud mother of three adult children. Professionally, she served on three different school boards as a Superintendent of Education, Principal, Vice-Principal, Teacher, and Educational Consultant. In addition to hosting her weekly podcast, Taking the Helm, she is a best-selling author. When she felt called to write a children’s book about overcoming anxiety and other big emotions she reached out to her niece, Amber for her subject matter expertise. Amber Raymond is a Master's level Social Worker specializing in self-awareness and self-development. She is an advocate for non-conventional, evidence-based coping strategies and identifies as a loving and committed mother and friend. Amber is passionate about child mental health, lifelong self-care practices, self-exploration, self-love, and wellbeing and she is always on the lookout for new ways to learn and grow. Although it’s a heavy topic, Lynn and Amber have created a fun way to teach your littlest ones (and even our not so little ones) about our biggest emotions. It feels especially relevant right now with back to school around the corner and I know in our home that can be a time of mixed emotions so this has definitely helped. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What emotional literacy means when it comes to children How we can help our children recognize their emotions Advice for when we lose our tempers The ways we can manage emotions A playful way to talk to your children about how they feel ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Sorry if I made you panic a little bit. Most families still have a few weeks of summer left before school starts, but one thing holds true…back to school shopping has been slowly creeping up and families are spending more and more each year. Did you know that U.S. families will spend upwards of 110.8 billion - yep billion with a B - on expenses related to back-to-school and college expenses? That’s a lot of money! The good news is that you can jump right off that hamster wheel of back to school craziness whenever you’re ready. As wannabe minimalists, we’ve gotten back-to-school down to a reasonable event. We participate in some of the traditional rituals - like some new clothes - but opt-out of others like getting new everything. It’s helped so much in not only keeping the clutter in our home down, but also helping us to be intentional and cut back on the spectacle of it all. And so that's why I want to bring you the 7 tips that have helped us the most in getting ready for back to school time in this week’s episode of the Wannabe Minimalist show. This episode will also help you discover: Why a capsule wardrobe makes or breaks our school mornings The #1 zone I recommend you create in your home to help with school stuff What I do instead of buying everything on the school supply list How we practice getting ready for school during the last week of summer The new things we actually buy and the many things we don’t ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? It feels like this elusive thing that if we just had enough of it we could reach all of our goals and live the life of our dreams. But, is that true? Is willpower really the thing you lack or is there something else that can help you achieve more, lose weight, declutter your home, and finally get organized? Jenn Trepeck is here to help us explore this question and more. Jenn has been described as a "force of nature" in the wellness space and has been recognized as one of Podcast Magazine’s 40 under 40. She is an Optimal Health Coach, Podcaster, and Business Consultant. She grew up the skinny one in a family of dieters which was awesome(!) until it went away. And so began her weight management saga. Ultimately though, Jenn learned the nutrition education we’re all supposed to know but no one ever taught us. Now Jenn’s on a mission to pay it forward and help people help themselves. Based on science, yet keeping it lighthearted, we discuss the reality of living life while still making ourselves and our health a priority. Routines and habits are one of the things I resisted in my life for way too long and I am almost embarrassed by how long it took me to figure out that routines are the things that make life easier - not harder or boring. Ashley knows when women feel good, the world is better for it. She’s on a mission to see as many women as possible organize their life one routine at a time! No worries. I’ve got your back. Decluttering doesn’t have to mean dumping everything out and sorting through it one thing at a time. Instead of feeling like you have to do it all at once, you can be methodical and create a rhythm for going through the things you own. Honestly, no one really wants to look through their old items and feel guilty about tossing stuff. Even as a minimalist, decluttering is a means to an end for me. I love the feeling of a neat tidy space, but sorting, purging, and tossing is tiring. Here’s what I do instead of decluttering to keep my home clean and clutter free. It seems like a simple question, but it’s a question I hear often which means that it’s not as straight forward as it seems. Sometimes people really don't know what stuff to classify as clutter. They think that anything that’s above the basic necessities is considered clutter (and that might be true if you are a hard-core minimalist, which I am not). Other times, someone might be looking for an excuse to keep something or a reason to get rid of something. When you are in this state of being unsure about clutter, a definition or a rule can help you make that decision and feel good about it. So it's no wonder that this question and the desire for a definition on clutter keeps coming up. If you’ve ever wondered what clutter really is or if you can have stuff as a minimalist, this episode will help you figure it out. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The factual definition of clutter and why it’s not enough Why physical clutter is not the only issue What you can do to look at your clutter differently How I categorize clutter so it’s easier to tackle The first step I take to minimize my clutter that works wonders ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Asking the right questions may help you finally let go of the clutter in your home that you’ve struggled with. Or it might be how you decide what’s really important to hold on to - even though other people might think it’s crazy. The problem is that a lot of us have been conditioned to avoid being curious. Perhaps you grew up hearing the old wive’s tale that curiosity killed the cat and it stunted your desire to dig in and ask questions. Or maybe someone told you that questioning things makes you appear unsure or weak. This week’s guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you overcome those negative, limiting beliefs. By the end of this episode you will see how curiosity can be the gentle nudge to get your life moving in the right direction. Emma Krebs is an innately curious person. Her passion for connecting with others on a deeper level was the catalyst for the creation of her own podcast, The Curious One. Since starting her podcast she's been able to make pivots within her career to help other creators in the social media and podcasting space share their stories. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What it actually means to be curious How you can use curiosity to change your life A reversal that can make decluttering easier Tips for dealing with sentimental clutter and what didn't work for Emma Why Emma doesn’t call herself a minimalist anymore ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Honestly, most people don’t give much consideration to the plastics they use to store leftovers or the lotion they lather on a couple times a day, but they can make a big impact on your life, especially when it comes to getting pregnant. This was the ah-ha moment my guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show had as she suffered her 4th late-stage miscarriage. When her doctors couldn't tell her the cause, she took it upon herself to dig into the products we all use everyday. What she discovered is pretty shocking, upsetting, and unbelievable. A registered dietitian and environmental health scientist by training, Dr. Jenna Hua's past research has focused on how our surrounding environment impacts our behaviors and health. Jenna holds a BS in Nutrition and an MPH and PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from UC Berkeley and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford Medicine. Yep...she’s legit. She founded Million Marker, a health-tech startup dedicated to empowering everyone with the data and tools to determine how the products they use, the food they eat, and the water they drink negatively or positively influence their health. Be ready for a few surprising moments. Give it a listen and then check out the links below. Do you wish your kid’s room could be organized and tidy? You’re not alone! I get asked all the time about how to declutter and organize kid’s stuff. It seems like the smallest among us have the most stuff or at least it’s the most in your face (and everywhere in your home). No matter if you have one child or five, the fact is kids typically come with a lot of stuff. It is so easy to accumulate toys, little clothes, books, games. Kids grow fast and each stage comes with new belongings. If your children have never been given boundaries around their stuff, it’s going to be really difficult to go from a whole house stuffed to the rafters with toys, gadgets, gizmos, and squishies to those sparse instagram images you covet. The good news is, you can get there, it’s just not happening overnight and that's okay. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show lays out the 7 things you can do to corral the toys and mountains of kids things and set up systems so your kiddos can help you keep it up. Some days I feel like I nailed it and other days feel like a failure. However, my journey toward minimalism has had some wonderful overlap when it comes to the rest of my life - outside of the stuff in my home. It has helped me become more intentional and that includes how I spend my time and the relationships I have. Of course the most important relationships in my life are those with my partner and that with my daughter. Since, there is always much to learn in this life, I brought in an expert when it comes to the parent/child relationships we have. Dr. Sarah Bren is a licensed clinical psychologist and mom of two, whose passion is helping parents find their inner confidence and raise healthy, resilient kids. She is the host of the podcast Securely Attached, and the creator of the website drsarahbren.com where she offers resources such as guides, workshops, and digital courses. She is the co-founder and clinical director of Upshur Bren Psychology Group in Pelham, NY where she treats parents, children and families. Sarah has such a calming presence and you call tell she practices what she preaches. It was a fun conversation and I learned more about attachment parenting, gained confidence in some of the techniques I have been using in my own life, and found encouragement for the developmental stages that are awaiting me as my daughter grows up and matures. That was me this week. Life was busy because we had just gotten back from our spring break vacation and my calendar was full of things to clean up from before we left and to make up for being off for the week. You know how that goes. But then, my daughter woke up sick. And with the last 2 years dedicated to the pandemic (and thankfully avoiding illness) we were totally out of practice with what to do. To say that it completely took over my day would be a good way to put it. There was a problem though - I did have a couple non-negotiable things that had to happen. Instead of letting the complete change of my day ruin everything I worked through it and it ended up being not only a productive day, but a good one too. I recently spoke about the best ways to organize your days and I think the universe was giving me this opportunity to put that advice into practice. It worked and I also uncovered a few more lessons for how to actually keep my cool in the midst of a crazy day. That’s what I want to share with you. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: My 5 step plan for getting my day back on track What I say to myself to keep a clear head The biggest aha moment I had with the concept of time How I plan for the unexpected The #1 thing I recommend you do before tackling a bad day ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Or worse, does it seem like no matter what you try it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the problem so you’re not sure it even matters? Those are the questions and issues my guest on this episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show found himself pondering as he looked at the different ways he could try to help the environment while downsizing to a tiny home. What started off as a project to build his own custom tiny home, turned into a new-found mission of trying to figure out how to have a bigger impact on the world around him. Michael Bartz is the producer and host of the In Over My Head Podcast that follows his journey to lower his environmental footprint by building a 175 square foot off-grid Tiny Home. He felt overwhelmed by trying to "save the planet" and wasn't sure if all his downsizing and minimizing was really making a difference so he decided to bring in the experts. Michael and his partner Sara live in their Tiny Home on a farm in southern Alberta, and when he’s not podcasting, he can be found pursuing his creative endeavors of acting and writing, or being active and hiking in the Rockies. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Michael and he opened my eyes to some really interesting ideas when it comes to how we can actually make a difference when it comes to the environment. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What it took for Michael to downsize from a traditional house to a tiny home The catalyst that pushed him to build his own tiny home The 2 surprising things Michael thinks we should all do if we want to help the environment What he does with his bulky sporting equipment in a tiny home How minimalism has shaped Michael’s life ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? The weather is warming up, the birds are chirping, the sun is out more, there’s a feeling of renewal, and we’re ready to throw off the winter doldrums for a breath of fresh air. And with the changing of the seasons also comes spring cleaning. Dun, dun, dunnn! I know. I don't really like cleaning either. Yes, you heard that right...a minimalist who teaches others how to keep a tidy home so they can live a better life doesn't like cleaning. But, just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I don't do it. Spring cleaning my home helps me (and my family) to enjoy our house to the fullest. So, if it must be done, why not make it as quick and easy as possible? That’s what this episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show is all about! I walk you through how to clean your home from top to bottom - and not just straighten up, but deep clean the things that matter and leave your home feeling refreshed - all in just one day. It will be a long day, but it will be D - O - N - E. And that my friend is my favorite part about having a clean home - how I feel when it’s all done. I feel as though I could tackle the world. Anything is possible and it's the best feeling to take into spring. Don’t you think? I am the decluttering go-to in my group so it’s pretty common for people to come to me when they have questions about what to do with their stuff, how to organize something, or issues letting go of the things in their home. And what I heard was pretty typical. She told me that she’s tried to declutter in the past, but has basically given up at this point because no matter what she tries her home becomes messy again in a week, month tops. She also told me her husband’s not really on board and her mom buys her kids anything they want, even though she has asked her mother to stop. Sound familiar? However, instead of jumping in and saying that decluttering was no use, I asked her if her stuff was in order. And here’s where it hit home. My friend said she didn't see the point of getting her home in order when she felt all alone. There's just so much to do that she felt like she failed even before she started. My heart broke a bit for her. The good news is, there are ways to fix this decluttering situation, so I gave her tips to help her solve these issues and I’m sharing that same advice with you because as we were talking, I realized that she was making the same mistakes I see over and over. And if she was making these mistakes, it’s likely you are too. ** Let’s fix that so you can move forward in confidence and no longer feel like you are alone on this journey. Did you know that more than three quarters (76%) of employed Americans report they are currently experiencing burnout? It’s a huge problem in the work place, but let’s be honest...moms experience burnout too. Whether you're a working mom, a stay at home mom, or a work from home mom, it’s all hard. It’s just not studied as much. It’s also true that women are more likely to experience burnout than men - 80% vs 72% - but I’m not sure that’s a big surprise as women often feel more household responsibilities fall to them in addition to paid or unpaid responsibilities. Burnout is more common than we realize and it’s important to talk about it so people know they are not alone. We frequently hear people talking about stress and overwhelm and while overwhelm can go with both burnout and stress the way we react to both is different. No matter who you are and what your work situation is like, we are all bound to face negative feelings, stress, overwhelm, and potentially burnout at some point in our lives. The good news is we can do something about it. When you feel burnout coming on it can be hard to motivate yourself to do anything so these 10 ways to stop burnout are simple and can be implemented right now. The will get the ball rolling and can help you go from overwhelmed to in control so you can get back to enjoying life. And let me just say that I am not a health professional. The advice I give today is what has worked for me personally. If you are feeling depressed, down, strong burnout, or anxiety I recommend you speak with a health professional who can help. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What burnout is & how it differs from stress 10 simple tips to help with burnout right now Why vacations are great, but not the only way to overcome burnout The easiest ways to keep burnout at bay How being a mom helps me stop burnout ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? It’s a bit like the philosophical question of the chicken and the egg. We’re not sure which came first? In this instance the question becomes does life better because you declutter or do you declutter as you get closer to your dream life? And maybe you think it's a hard question because everyone’s idea of a dream or ideal life is different. Yes, that is true. What seems ideal for one person might be the opposite of what you would consider a dream. The good news is that our definition and visions of dream lives actually have very little to do with the steps we need to take to get there. So no matter if you want to be a homeschooling parent or prefer to send your children to school - you can use these steps. If you want to travel the world or explore your city they will work for you too. They will even work no matter how much or little money you have in the bank. The 3 steps outlined in this episode will help you create a clear vision for your life, let go of the comparison trap, and create space so you can enjoy the life of your dreams. Let’s explore how we can create a life you don’t feel like you need a vacation from. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why the first step to getting the life you want is knowing what it is How to create goals that improve your whole life The 10 life categories you need to consider when creating your vision The simplest way to get out of the comparison trap How decluttering makes it easier to live your dream life ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? This is one of my favorite places to start. Yes, some people say to start in your bathroom because there are fewer emotional decisions to be made there and there is less stuff to deal with, but for me the sense of accomplishment and joy I feel when looking at an organized closet is worth the effort. When my closet is organized, I am able to start my day off on the right foot. I can see all of the clothing I own and it makes it easier to choose an outfit for the day. When my day begins with less stress it carries over throughout my day and makes the other areas of my life easier too. Adopting a capsule wardrobe has seriously helped my closet organization issues and taken this to a whole new level, but you don't have to go that far to see amazing results. These 4 easy steps can help you get your closet under control no matter if you are a fashionista and love to have the latest and greatest trends or if you are more like me and enjoy a simple wardrobe that mixes and matches. The principles are the same and before you know it your closet will be clutter free, organized, and feeling amazing. Opening those doors just might become one of your favorite parts of your day and any day that starts with a smile is a winner in my book. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why the first step to organizing your closet isn’t even touching your clothes How to create space for everything you love with the container method An update to one of the most trusted organization methods The easiest way to declutter - not you do not have to take it all out at once Why making your space is important and what it does for long-term organization ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? You might not think that how we spend our money or the thoughts we have about money have anything to do with our stuff. Or maybe you just think that only those who over spend and buy stuff they do not need are the only ones who experience the link between spending and clutter. But, for many people - myself included - the way we think about money, even when we do not over spend, has a giant impact on the items in our homes. In addition to over spending, the other big issue when it comes to money and stuff is under buying. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to spending money and both cause problems in our homes and lives. But, how can spending less money and under buying be a problem when it comes to clutter and having an organized home? Turns out, there is a balance between buying enough so that you have what you need when you need it and buying too much, causing too many piles to build up in your home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why under spending actually causes you to stress more about the things in your home How over spending leads to mounds of clutter and unwanted bills Examples of under buying and over spending to see if either affects you The difference between under spending and under buying / over spending and compulsive shopping 5 simple things you can do to overcome either under buying or over spending ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? That’s how we learn and grow. And my journey toward a clutter free life has seen it's share of minimalist mistakes and frugal failures. In fact, I am a pretty frugal person. It’s just in my nature and the idea of buying less (and thus spending less) is probably what drew me to minimalism in the first place. However, what has kept me on this journey is a simpler, more intentional life that is just easier to manage. When you have less stuff, there is less to worry about, less to clean, and less to get in your way. Unless, you take it too far. When that happens, the practice of having less can actually make life more difficult. This is what a minimalist fail is. And when you waste money - when your intention was to save money...that is a frugal fail. My hope is that by sharing some of my most memorable minimalist mistakes and frugal failures, I can help spare you from these same troubles. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why spending the least is not always best How coupons actually work and why I never use them What I do now to save money on cable and streaming services The problem with DIY projects My horrible travel hack failure and what I will never do again ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? It sounds super dramatic and while it is a big change, I don’t want you to worry. The changes are big in branding - so the name of the website and look of it will be changing, but the content and the reason behind what I teach and discuss will be staying mostly the same. A few weeks ago I had this nagging feeling in my gut that I was not getting my message out to the people I could really be helping. While I relate to minimalism and love the tenets of living with only the things I feel are necessary to enjoy my life, I know I have a LONG way to go until I would feel ready to call myself a true minimalist. However, there is something about the label of minimalism that makes me cringe just a bit. I’ve never felt extreme enough to help people who want to be hard-core minimalists. But, for the people who want to live with less stuff, the word minimalism puts them off as it feels too unattainable. So in order to help the most people (especially those who need it the most) find this website and podcast, I am changing the name. It’s all laid out in this episode and I hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget to explore the newly designed website too. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why I decided now was the right time to change my brand How the change will affect this podcast (or not) The steps I took to evaluate the name of my business What people in my real life think when I talk about minimalism The big goals behind what lead to this change ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? I’ve moved over 20 times in my life and while I am pretty skilled at it, moving with a school-aged child made me understand that my most recent move was going to be different. So I called in an expert to help me along the way. Ali Wenzke is the author of The Art of Happy Moving: How to Declutter, Pack, and Start Over While Maintaining Your Sanity and Finding Happiness and a real estate broker with Baird & Warner in Winnetka, IL. Ali and her husband moved ten times in eleven years, living in six U.S. states. Known as the “Marie Kondo of moving", Ali’s advice has been featured on TV, radio, and podcasts as well as in Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Today, Real Simple, Fast Company, Parents magazine and many more. Ali is happily settled in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three kids and for now doesn't plan on moving any time soon. Our discussions starts with the move that lead Ali to buckle down and declutter and I push her to give us her best tips on moving with children, what to do when other family members don't share your same vision, and what to do when you get into your new home. Yes, moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be a time of rejuvenation and reinvention of one’s self. And even if you have no plans to move, you can learn to declutter like you are moving and enjoy the benefits of a lighter home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: The secret to making a big move easier A fun game to help your kids declutter How to get your family on board with decluttering for a move Why you don’t have to move to reap the rewards of thinking like a mover The best tips for organizing your new home quickly ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Often with those goals comes new hobbies. And with new hobbies comes more stuff. There is a term that encapsulates this increase in stuff. It’s called clutter creep and it means the accumulation of new things as we go through life. It’s the adding of more to your space without getting rid of something else at the same time. Without discipline, it’s easy to end up with a home overrun by all of the stuff you need to do these hobbies or accomplish your new goals. Figuring out what to do with this happens - because trust me it will happen - is not only possible, but there are steps you can take to keep it from happening in the first place. The good news is you can still be a minimalist and have hobbies. You can even have more than one hobby. It depends on what other stuff you have, the space you have in your home, and what ultimately brings you joy. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why hobbies are important and should not be cut out of your life How to evaluate your hobbies What I do to limit hobby clutter creep in my home Why starting small is smart What minimum viable amount means and why it’s the key to keeping clutter at bay ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? And after the craziness of the past two years, I am so ready to get back in the driver’s seat and I know you probably are too. The best way to make a difference in your life is to start at home. Your home is your sanctuary for you and your family. It’s where you come to recharge after being out in the crazy world (and you’re not alone if you think it feels crazier than ever these days). That’s why I am so grateful my home is a place where I feel comfortable and energized and why I want to help you get to the same place. Because, after hearing from a lot of you, it’s clear that you’re like me - when your home is messy or things are not organized it affects how you feel and how productive you are. That’s why I wanted to dedicate today’s podcast episode to creating the home environment you want. We all want to be happy at home and these are the 5 steps I take regularly to keep my home running like creamy peanut butter and that makes me very happy. Do you think of minimalism as a design aesthetic with bare white walls and barely any furniture? Or maybe it makes you think of people who live with only 100 items or less. Or perhaps you equate minimalism with living an intentional or simple life. All three of these definitions is right and that's what makes trying to define minimalism such a tricky task. When I started on this journey of podcasting, it was a way for me to explore decluttering, organizing, and living with less while sharing my experience with you. I’ve been lucky enough to interview some amazing women along the way and as I looked back on past episodes I realized how much I have grown in how I see things and how much my family has grown too. I will not lie...I am very much a work in progress. I too wish I could just snap my fingers and have the messy work done. Self-reflection feels scary and honestly, exhausting. But, it’s all part of the process and as we come to the close of another year, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on 10 beliefs I have about minimalism. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why minimalism is about more than just the stuff in your home How people react when they hear I host a show about minimalism What perfectionism has to do with minimalism The biggest revelation I had in the last year that has to do with our homes and self-care Tips for overcoming the guilt of letting go expensive items ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? If so, do you ever wonder if choosing different colors would look better on you? Or maybe you struggle with getting all of your colors to coordinate and look good together instead of feeling like you're drowning in a sea of mismatched rainbows. My guest this week on the Wannabe Minimalist Podcast is a color expert that helps women find their best colors based on their skin, hair, and eye color so I invited her on to help us decipher this world of color. To be honest, I'm a sucker for a capsule wardrobe, but have never been comfortable with much color. Jeannie Stith is on a mission to help those of us who are lost when it comes to color. She is the founder and CEO of Color Guru, where she matches people to their ideal color palette for clothing so that they can look better, simplify clothes shopping, and create a coordinated wardrobe through her signature color cards. Jeannie's a mother of two girls and lives in Arden, Delaware. When she’s not analyzing her client's photos, you can find her hopping on rocks in the creek with her daughters, salsa dancing, or watering her current collection of 55 house plants. Our discussions starts with looking at how Jeannie became interested in colors in the first place and we tackle what's involved with finding the colors that will work best for you. I also press her when it comes to what you should do when you don't like the colors that have been suggested for you in the past. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why your closet may be letting you down A simple way to hone in on your ideal color palette The color that will make your eyes pop - it might just surprise you! There are so many goodies and treats on display at every turn beckoning us to indulge. So, how can we be more intentional about what we eat without missing out on the good stuff, watching the scale climb, or feeling guilty? My guest this week on the Wannabe Minimalist Podcast has been helping women eat healthier and feel better for years so naturally I reached out to have her on the show to help us during this difficult time. Laura Marzen, RD, LD, started her career as a nutrition specialist in the Better Homes and Gardens® test kitchen, where she developed and tested recipes for a variety of magazines and cookbooks and appeared in cooking videos for both TV and online media. Now she’s focusing her attention on her website, Fresh Food Bites, www.freshfoodbites.com, where she features healthy, approachable, family-friendly recipes that are gluten and dairy free. In addition, she currently coaches women to help them improve their gut health and overcome IBS in a way that is practical and sustainable. Our discussions starts with looking at how Laura became interested in digestive health and what it has to do with living an intentional life. There are so many similarities between cutting the crap out of your home and cutting out the junk that you eat so I was thrilled to have a chance to connect with her on the show. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why your calendar is one of your biggest assets when meal planning Simple healthy snack ideas your kids will actually eat Tips for eating healthy at the holidays (it’s not what you expect!)
