Can You Ever Express YOUR Feelings to Narcissists and Feel Seen?09 Jan 202400:56:12

Tony introduces his 'Five Foolproof Formulas for Navigating Narcissistic Nonsense,' which helps maintain emotional stability and a sense of self in challenging relationships. Still Wondering if YOU Are the Narcissist/Did They Finally “Get it?” - Introducing “Shelf Life”21 Dec 202300:58:29
“If I’m asking if I’m the narcissist, then Tony says I’m not!” Tony shares that he receives more feedback on this concept than any other from WUTN listeners. But what happens when the narcissist or emotionally immature person in your life gets ahold of this “script?” Does simply repeating this sentence elicit change? Tony details this question and introduces the concept of 'shelf life', a temporary behavioral change in emotionally immature people. We debate the question, 'If you're asking yourself if you're a narcissist, then are you one?' and touch on the use of therapy or self-help methods as tools for manipulation. As we progress through the episode, we discuss how 'John' used therapy to manipulate 'Emily' and appear as a problem solver rather than acknowledging his shortcomings. Overall, the episode is an insightful exploration of emotional immaturity, narcissistic traits, and manipulative behaviors in relationships. 00:00 Introduction and Story of John and Emily 01:27 The Breaking Point and Decision to Seek Therapy 02:09 Initial Therapy Session and Promises Made 03:22 The Short-lived Change and Return to Old Patterns 05:47 Understanding the Concept of 'Shelf Life' in Emotional Change 09:08 The Power of Writing and Self-Expression 15:04 The Narcissist's Reaction to the Podcast 16:27 Doubts, Confusion, and the Struggle to Stay Strong 32:53 Recognizing the Difference: Working on Things vs. Escaping Discomfort 33:15 The Narcissist in Therapy: A Case Study 33:37 The Power of Self-Questioning: Are You the Narcissist? 34:07 The Concept of Shelf Life and Positive Tension 34:37 The Nurtured Heart Approach: A Parenting Model 35:40 The Struggle of Change: A Personal Story 36:10 Trusting Your Gut: Recognizing Manipulation in Therapy 36:39 The Aha Moment: Acceptance and Curiosity 37:37 The Ultimatum: Divorce or Seek Help 39:40 The Journey of Awakening: Acknowledging the Past and Embracing the Future 40:05 The Reality of Narcissism: Recognizing Traits and Codependency 41:59 The Power of Community: Reading Comments from the Group 51:02 The Story of John and Emily: A Case Study on Shelf Life 52:39 Understanding Shelf Life: Temporary Behavioral Change 56:54 The Power of Self-Reflection: Embracing Solitude Find all the latest links to podcasts, courses, Tony's newsletter, and more at https://linktr.ee/virtualcouch And follow Tony on the Virtual Couch YouTube channel for a sneak preview of his upcoming podcast "Murder on the Couch," where True Crime meets therapy, co-hosted with his daughter Sydney. Abuse, God, and Self-Discovery with Ryan Anderson, PhD., LMFT, and Author of 'The Choice to Leave Abuse'29 Nov 202300:59:56
How does abuse impact an individual's spirituality and relationship with God? And how critical is it for a spiritual leader to be non-judgmental, empathetic, and compassionate when someone comes into their office talking about abuse? These critical questions are at the heart of today’s episode. Tony Overbay, LMFT, engages in an insightful conversation with Ryan Anderson, PhD, LMFT, and author of "The Choice to Leave Abuse." This episode explores the complex issue of abuse, especially within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and addresses many common misconceptions about the role of the authority figure in a church congregation. They touch on the prevalence and damaging effects of emotional immaturity and narcissistic traits on relationships and in church leadership. A significant part of the discussion focuses on epigenetics, shedding light on how abuse impacts individuals at a genetic level and offers hope for healing and growth. The episode also addresses the sensitive topic of spiritual abuse within the LDS community. Overbay and Anderson examine the hesitancy of community leaders to confront and address abuse, highlighting the urgent need for supportive environments. They dissect the stigmas and misconceptions in the community, emphasizing the importance of making decisions prioritizing personal well-being and safety. While centered on the LDS community, the themes discussed in this episode have universal relevance. Topics like emotional intelligence, the far-reaching impact of abuse, and the crucial role of support for survivors transcend religious and cultural boundaries. The conversation between Overbay and Anderson serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empowerment and support for survivors, asserting that spirituality and one's relationship with God should aid, not hinder, the journey to overcome abuse. The Power of Temporary Connections: Understanding Bridge Partners14 Aug 202300:52:42
Tony answers a listener's question about the uncertainty of coming out of a controlling relationship and suddenly recognizing you can be anything you want to be and not knowing where to begin. He then takes on the concept of a “Bridge Partner.” Finding your way through life's relational complexities often introduces us to pivotal figures who can be considered "bridge partners." These unique individuals act as connectors, helping us transition from one emotional or relational state to another. Their role is invaluable; they guide us from places of uncertainty, emotional vulnerability, or even pain to a clearer understanding of ourselves, our desires, and our worth. But for those in emotionally immature/narcissistic relationships, “bridge partners” can be a lifeline but also cause tremendous guilt and shame. What is the difference between a “bridge partner” and an “affair partner?” How can a “bridge partner” help someone recognize what they are missing in a relationship? And what happens when two “bridge partners” have an opportunity to be in a committed relationship? Will their shared experiences be enough to move them further down a path of emotional maturity, or will the fact that both partners are coming out of unhealthy relationships only complicate a new relationship? Or c) all of the above? Bridge partners, though temporary, offer tremendous growth potential. They help you confront and challenge your understanding of relationships and personal values. But it's essential to tread with caution. Sometimes, our search for emotional connection can lead us to situations or people that might not be in our long-term best interest. Understanding complex phenomena like the Coolidge Effect or the reasons behind seeking connections outside committed relationships can provide clarity. Still, throughout this journey, it's paramount to remember that it's alright to wait to have all the answers. Embracing change, accepting oneself, and being authentic in our relationships are the cornerstones of actual growth and fulfillment. Unseen Chains: Navigating the Subtleties of Coercive Control18 Jul 202300:45:12
Today we delve into the challenging topic of coercive control and how it shows up in emotionally immature and narcissistic relationships. We explore the fundamental contradiction of control and love, showing how genuine affection and dominance cannot coexist harmoniously. Coercive control is a powerful, often invisible manipulation tool employed by abusers to entrap their victims. This episode also features a mix of light-hearted elements, including a thought-provoking haiku, riddle, knock-knock joke, and Limerick about the complex interplay of love and control. As we transition, we also shed light on the portrayal of control and manipulation in true story movies and the role of artificial intelligence in modern life. We then dive deep into six patterns of coercive control that manifest in many relationships. Stripping of autonomy involves the erasure of a partner's freedom, forcing them into dependency. The manipulation of intimacy and sex becomes a tool for domination. At the same time, the technological leash and the regulated health and body shift enable the abuser to monitor and control their victim's every move. As we discuss the shifting of financial power and the often-overlooked emotional roulette, listeners will gain a comprehensive understanding of how covertly coercive control can infiltrate everyday life. The episode concludes with an emphasis on the importance of seeking professional help and personal growth to overcome these damaging relationship patterns. Remember, if you are a victim of such behavior, you are not alone; resources are available to help reclaim your independence. Understanding Emotionally Immature and Narcissistic Individuals in Therapy: Insights for Individuals and Therapists30 Jun 202301:24:53
In today’s episode, Tony delves into the complexities of working with emotionally immature or narcissistic individuals in couples therapy. He explains the challenges therapists face in discerning genuine commitment to change from manipulative behavior, as these individuals can initially come across as charming and convincing. Tony emphasizes the importance of recognizing patterns such as lying, minimizing behavior, love bombing, and maintaining control. He acknowledges that therapists may encounter difficulties in navigating these dynamics and encourages self-confrontation and personal growth. Additionally, Tony urges therapists to be aware of their own countertransference and to advocate for their client's well-being. Tony explores the topic from both the therapist's and the individual's perspective, emphasizing the need for dialogue and understanding when working with emotionally immature or narcissistic individuals in therapy. He highlights the potential for therapists to help individuals break harmful cycles and become transformational figures in their own family systems. While acknowledging that therapists may not receive extensive training in working with these individuals, Tony encourages therapists to confront their own biases and limitations in order to provide effective support. He offers insights and tools for therapists and individuals alike to navigate these challenging situations. Overall, therapy involves introducing positive tension, addressing discomfort, and promoting growth and change. Therapists need to trust their instincts, recognize signs of emotional abuse, and continuously seek professional development. Incorporating new knowledge and being vulnerable in sessions can enhance the therapeutic experience for both therapist and client. In couples therapy, it is important for therapists to separate their observations from their judgments and continue to grow professionally to effectively help couples. Surviving the RIDE: Breaking the Cycle of Intermittent Reinforcement in Narcissistic Relationships20 Jun 202300:33:58
In today’s episode, Tony delves deep into the hidden mechanisms that fuel toxic relationships. He uncovers the secret life of intermittent reinforcement, how it creates the “trauma bond,” and its powerful influence in addictive and toxic relationships, especially those involving narcissists or emotionally immature individuals. Pulling from the roots of B.F. Skinner's theories on operant conditioning and behaviorism, we'll journey through the ways in which behavior can be conditioned, manipulated, and maintained by external consequences. Get ready for a RIDE - a closer look at how "Reinforcement Intermittently Delivers Emotion," shaping relationships into addictive cycles that mimic the obsession of a rat repeatedly pressing a lever in the hope of an unpredictable reward. The scenario paints a vivid picture of the emotional roller coaster many endure at the hands of narcissists or emotionally immature individuals. Just as the rat persists despite the neglect of its needs, the partner in an abusive relationship finds themselves consumed with drawing out the abuser's fleeting affection. The relationship turns into an addiction, hard to break free from, mirroring patterns seen in other addictive behaviors like gambling or obsessive email checking. Unraveling the layers of intermittent reinforcement is key to breaking the cycle, and recognizing the behavior is the first step. This episode is a deep dive into understanding and recognizing the signs of this manipulation tactic, the addiction-like bond it forms, and the consequent self-blame. We also discuss how to navigate the withdrawal-like experience of breaking free, realign with personal values, and seek support. Remember, the strength of your enemy is the strength of your knowledge. Healing the Scars: Recovering from Narcissistic Abuse and Reclaiming Self-Worth12 Jun 202300:48:09
Tony delves into the profound impact of trauma and emotional neglect on relationship patterns. He shares the story of John, who endured a chaotic and emotionally neglectful upbringing with narcissistic parents, only to later marry Sarah, who exhibited similar traits. John's yearning for validation and acceptance kept him trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship, leading to anxiety, depression, and a sense of hopelessness. Breaking free from a narcissistic trauma bond is a challenging journey that demands immense courage and support. The podcast also explores how psychological trauma inflicted by narcissistic partners can take a toll on physical health. Tony shares a personal account from a woman who experienced narcissistic abuse, highlighting its impact on her mental and physical well-being. The importance of listening to one's body and acknowledging physical symptoms as signals for self-reflection and trigger identification is emphasized. Seeking timely support and prioritizing healing is crucial, given the complexities of recovering from mental trauma. Referencing the article "Remnants of Abuse and Manifestations of Trauma" by Kristy Lee Hochenberger, Ph.D.,https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/love-in-the-age-narcissism/202104/remnants-abuse-and-manifestations-trauma Tony delves into the diverse causes and effects of trauma. The author underscores the significance of recognizing emotional damage stemming from events like infidelity, accidents, and domestic violence, as therapists may become desensitized to traumatic stories. The signs of trauma can manifest physically, such as through headaches and fatigue, as well as emotionally, with outbursts, disordered eating, and substance abuse. Emotional and psychological signs of trauma from narcissistic abuse include emotional instability, high levels of mistrust, hopelessness, diminished self-esteem, and overpowering memories that contribute to depression and a lack of motivation. While recovery from emotional trauma is possible, it may leave scars or lingering effects. Victims are encouraged to seek help through online groups, therapy, and other resources. The podcast and article underscore the importance of healing, self-discovery, and support to break free from past cycles and foster healthier emotional expression and self-worth. They Really Do Suck the Life Out of You - The "Antagonistic" Attachment of the Narcissist28 Apr 202300:32:19
Tony goes on a quick tangent between parts 1 and 2 of exploring the five types of narcissists to look into the antagonistic attachment style of the narcissistic person. An “antagonist,” from purely a biological, scientific point of view, is a relationship in which one organism benefits at the expense of another. People in narcissistic or emotionally immature relationships can often identify with the concept of playing the role of the organism that provides the benefit to another while losing themselves in the process. Thou Shalt Use Whichevereth Type of Toothpaste Thou Wantest - Breaking the Commandments of Narcissism (Finally!)27 Mar 202300:46:25
People in relationships with narcissists, or extremely emotionally immature people, are often convinced, coerced, or controlled into believing that certain universal rules or commandments must be followed to continue in the relationship. In healthy relationships, both people are free to express how they do things and their likes and dislikes. Then if a change is necessary, it comes from mutually respectful conversations. Tony turned to the private women’s Facebook group to receive dozens of rules and commandments that many people kept to keep the peace in the home or because, over time, they believed that these were “universal truths.” It can take time to unlearn many of these rules, and they can even affect future relationships. Tony shares many rules and how to avoid them playing a negative role in relationships. Dana Killion, Author of “Where The Shadows Dance” on Finding Strength When You Feel You Have None20 Mar 202300:44:17
Author Dana Killion joins Tony to discuss her memoir “Where the Shadows Dance,” available for pre-order at https://amzn.to/3yR0gIp Dana’s story is born of a life in turmoil and her husband’s addiction, a situation where the only way through was to write it. And as she wrote, the themes of her personal trauma became clear and loud. They screamed for attention because they are the themes of many women, not just women with an addict in their life, but women who have been silent and have set aside their truth for the benefit of another. Women who are ready to find the strength and solace Dana has found through her reinvention. Tony and Dana discuss similarities in Dana’s story with those of the women and men who find themselves in relationships with emotionally immature or narcissistic people in their lives and how vital the need for self-care and listening to one's instincts can literally be life-saving. Dana Killion is the author of several fiction books in the mystery/thriller/suspense category, including the Andrea Kellner series “Lies in High Places” https://amzn.to/3FzQQF7 “The Last Lie” https://amzn.to/3yPhqGn and her latest offering, her memoir “Where the Shadows Dance” which can be pre-ordered on Amazon at https://amzn.to/3yR0gIp And follow Tony on the Virtual Couch YouTube channel for a sneak preview of his upcoming podcast "Murder on the Couch," where True Crime meets therapy, co-hosted with his daughter Sydney. Let ME Explain Narcissism and Emotional Immaturity to Your Friends, So You Don’t Have To!13 Mar 202300:52:16
When asked if Tony had a podcast to refer to people who were moderately interested in learning about narcissism, he said, "of course I do!" And then he couldn't find one. This episode is for those of you who want to try and explain your situation to people you care about who want to know but who a) don't know what they don't know, b) you worry that without a bit of background, they will throw judgment your way and c) don't want to spend a lot of time researching something that they don't believe that they've experienced in their own relationships. Tony references “17 Signs That You’re in a Narcissistic Marriage or Relationship” by Arlin Cunic, medically reviewed by Ivy Kwong LMFT https://www.verywellmind.com/signs-you-re-married-to-a-narcissist-5208165 And follow Tony on the Virtual Couch YouTube channel for a sneak preview of his upcoming podcast "Murder on the Couch," where True Crime meets therapy, co-hosted with his daughter Sydney.
