Carnegie Mellon University student harpist, Arilyn Mitchell, and flutist, Evan Curatolo, talk about their upcoming concert with the Pittsburgh Concert Society on Sunday, November 3rd at 2 pm at the Kresge Theater.
They discuss the three short French pieces for flute and harp they will perform during the concert, and how they started performing together two years ago after Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra harpist, Gretchen Van Hosen, put them together.
They also talk about their transition into their instruments at a young age. Arilyn switched from the flute to the harp, and never looked back. Evan transitioned from piano and saxophone to the flute in high school, starting out on a homemade flute made from pvc pipe. Both are looking forward to being back on the Kresge stage together.

What began as Monique Mead’s pandemic project to motivate her teens to practice has now turned into an annual porch concert series that brings the family and the neighborhood together. This Saturday, 7pm, it's "Young Talent Night." The porch concerts began with student recitals, and it continues to follow these young musicians as they mature as artists. Tino Cardenes curated this multi-genre program with his fellow local young artists. The concert features Tino Cardenes, piano; Hannah Chang, Violin; Uma Simhan, Voice; Alice Tang, violin; Leah Huber, soprano; and Visual Artist, Jocelyn Hayes. David talks about how this concert got put together, after he and James wanted to perform an arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue for Piano and Band together again. David also plays two pieces by Joe Utterback in our studio: An arrangement of the African American Spiritual Deep River, and a tribute to Scott Joplin, Doctor Joe's Long-Fingered Rag Time Special.

President of the Pittsburgh Symphony Association, Diane Unkovic , describes to Jim Cunningham what to expect at the Symphony Splendor Garden Tour Sunday, June 23 from 11 am to 4 pm in Shadyside. 8 Beautiful Shadyside Gardens will be opened for a self guided tour or an air conditioned bus tour. Over 20 members of the Pittsburgh Symphony will perform throughout the welcome center and gardens with all proceeds benefiting the Pittsburgh Symphony. The check in for visitors is located at the Mansions On Fifth Annex. Diane also remembers her work for Senator Heinz and serving as an usher at Heinz Hall while at the University of Pittsburgh. She also tells listeners how to become a master gardener and suggests what to do when a plant suddenly expires. Diane Unkovic suggests how to become a member of the Symphony Association and recommends a few books that have been favorites in the PSA Book Club which has been growing in popularity and she remembers her time spent as a painter. The season includes Handel's Apollo e Dafne with Twelfth Night, Roderick Williams, and Nola Richardson, French vocal and dance music from the time of Louis XII and XIV, and a world premiere of newly released version of Markus Passion to close out the season in April. Members of the Carpe Diem String Quartet, Sam Weiser, Marisa Ishikawa, Korine Fujiwara, and Ariana Nelson, spoke about their upcoming concert at The Frick Pittsburgh on October 19th, at 7 pm at the Frick Auditorium. This special night highlights the fusion of Islamic Art and Music across the ages as The Frick's latest exhibition, Treasured Ornament: 10 Centuries of Islamic Art, ends on October 20th.
The Quartet talks about their collaboration with local Iranian composer, Reza Vali, in a concert of Persian music about 10 years ago, and how that started a long collaboration with the composer that inspired their upcoming concert. They also talk about working with Santur player, Dariush Saghafi, in this concert.
A pre-performance discussion will be led by WQED's own Jim Cunningham, and guests will be able to converse with the musicians after the concert.
