The face of retail and the high street is changing and those seeing success are passionate creative businesses that have a truly distinctive personality, like Prior Shop in Bristol. Our final episode of season one features the inspirational Beck Prior, founder of Prior Shop – 'High Street Shop of the Year' winner in the 2021 Holly & Co Independent Awards. In 2019, Beck turned her passion for high quality, sustainable design, into a thriving business. She is a craftsperson, maker and visionary leader doing great things for her local communities. And in her pursuit of driving sales of beautiful hand-made products, Beck is bringing to life the stories behind the 150 makers she now works with. Prior has two shops and a visitor experience that combines retail with the local creative culture that customers and visitors can get involved in. This is some of the magic that will bring positive change to the retailers and high streets of the future. Beck shares how her battle with Leukaemia prompted her to consider and follow her passions. She explains how she got where she is today and some of the tips she has picked up along the way. Beck talks through ideas to drive footfall into Bristol’s large shopping destination Cabot Circus, as well as the smaller out of town high street in Old Market. We also discuss the challenges of digital marketing and increasing online sales alongside a bricks and mortar presence, as well as managing social media accounts as a business evolves. | 14. Riding on the crest of a in-land wave experience, with Nick Hounsfield, Founder of The Wave | 21 Sep 2022 | 00:30:26
What happens when you are passionate about people’s health and wellbeing, you love surfing, and want to create something epic that combines the two? You create a humongous 200 meter in-land surf lake! In today’s episode I talk to Nick Hounsfield, founder and chief visionary officer of The Wave https://www.thewave.com, the first inland surfing destination near Cribbs Causeway, Bristol only five minutes from the M4/M5 interchange. Costing over £25 million to create, Nick talks about how he managed to convince investors to support the project, how it finally opened as the world went into lockdown, and how four years on, along with his partner Craig Stoddard and a great team, they have navigated three very difficult years (that included Nick losing his ability to speak through a stroke) to become a thriving business, receiving up to 175,000 visitors per year. Nick’s first career as an osteopath gave him his passion for caring for people’s health and wellbeing - he continues that passion today, driving the ‘blue health’ agenda for being in and around water. He has a burning desire to bring the benefits of his sport ‘surfing’ to as many people from different walks of life as he can and states that he will have failed if The Wave is something only enjoyed by the white, middle classes. Listen to his exciting plans for the future of The Wave, Bristol including the taking the whole thing off-grid through the investment in solar panels, plus, how he is working on another amazing site in North London. What a humble yet determined guy - Nick proves just what you can achieve if you really believe in something. Enjoy the episode. Their work takes them all over the country, working in shopping centres, town and city centres and different types of venues. We also chat about how art and culture can bring places to life, telling stories through theatre and music. | 16. Building and nurturing 'place' culture, with Philip Walker, Gloucester City Council | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:51:04
In today's episode, I chat with the man in charge of culture for the city of Gloucester, Philip Walker, Head of Cultural Services, Gloucester City Council. Culture is vitally important, it provides the vitality, sense of belonging and opportunity for us to come together and connect with things that light up our hearts. For tourists, culture is the distinction which sets a place apart from another and forms ‘the experience’. Imagine a Britain without our pubs, theatres, football, rugby, music, and beautiful historic buildings. Imagine being responsible for culture within a whole city!? My guest in today’s podcast, Phil Walker, has the responsibility of overseeing the culture of the city of Gloucester. His role is to ensure it thrives and is distinctive enough to drive inbound tourism – a big remit. Phil began his career in the visitor economy in Bristol, during that time he worked in several venues across the city including Arnolfini, Watershed and Bristol Museums. It’s not often I get to speak to someone who was involved in a massive Banksy exhibition. Do you remember the Banksy take over at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery? It was epic! Phil shares how he received that call from Banksy’s ‘people’ one day and how he almost lost his job! He's taken his amazing experience with him to Gloucester, a smaller and diverse city with similar heritage to Bristol, as a trading post based on a river. Phil and I talk about the plans for Gloucester and the importance of big events in driving footfall and bringing a city or destination together. We talk about how Gloucester is investing in its cultural sector to retain its creative talent, and the idea of giving people freedom to curate the city with their own ideas and events. We chat about why it’s important for a Council and those with power, to hand over control to young people and others involved in the creative industries, to not only give the place life and distinction but to create a sense of belonging and pride. There are some interesting insights into what it takes to drive a city’s culture. I hope you enjoy the episode. In today’s podcast I had the pleasure of chatting to two independent tourism organisations based in Gloucestershire who are leading the way in not only making their businesses as sustainable as possible, they are also on a journey to changing our thinking around how we spend our leisure time – including what we choose to eat and drink. This week I was talking to Greg Pilley, Managing Director of Stroud Brewery, Sarah Brewster owner of Stonehouse Court Hotel and Visit Gloucestershire's sustainability lead Hannah McDonnell. Greg and Sarah are both part of the Sustainability Champions network brought together by Visit Gloucestershire – one of the first Destination Management Organisations to make a commitment to Net Zero by 2050 as part of the Glasgow declaration for climate action. As travel returns to pre-COVID levels, and overtourism and greenwashing remain a concern, there’s never been a more critical time for businesses to consider their own environmental impact and what changes they can start to implement now.
We also discuss some interesting ideas around how a rural destination can support and promote its sustainability credentials and how businesses can do their bit to help visitors make more sustainable choices. In this episode, I talk to Larry Bush, Director of Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in North Somerset, one of the attractions that have been recognised for doing it particularly well, winning gold in the Visit England Award for Excellence for Accessibility and Inclusion. Noah's Ark Zoo Farm welcomes over 200,000 visitors per year, including 20,000 school children. This former family-owned dairy farm has now been turned into a charity, as the Bush family appreciates that this is more than just a family business. It is now a place for the future of wildlife education, conservation, and people. In this episode, we talk about

| Ep 32 Insight into one of the South West's best campsite and outdoor activity centres Mendip Activity Centre, with George Combe | 23 Nov 2023 | 00:42:23 | |
Today's podcast episode features the delightful George Combe, talking about the growth and popularity of the Mendip Activity Centre in North Somerset. Spread across 250 acres, Mendip Activity Centre is the largest independent activity centre in the West. With a dry ski slope, toboggan run, watersports on the river, rock climbing, and much more. During the pandemic, the team made the decision to open their campsite to the public, where previously it had only been accessible to schools and children's groups. The result has been over 100,000 visitors and a rapidly growing reputation for being one of the South West's best campsites. In 2022, they won silver in the South West Tourism Awards for the best campsite, and they are eagerly awaiting the results of the 2023 awards, which will no doubt be fruitful. There's a lot happening at the centre, from instructor training to a dedicated accessibility programme. Sustainability is high on their agenda as they explore more of the site with a resident ecologist. If you're interested in what it takes to run a successful outdoor active experience and campsite, then you'll love this episode. | Ep 35 The role of culture in Weston-super-Mare's Regeneration: conversation with Creative Director, Fiona Matthews of Super Culture 🌟 | 01 Feb 2024 | 00:40:58
Welcome to episode 35 of the Visitor Elves podcast. Today, I’m joined by Fiona Matthews, Creative Director of Super Culture, an organisation that creates cultural experiences in Weston-super-Mare. Super Culture creates large-scale events such as the annual light festival GLOW and Whirligig and works on initiatives involving the entire community. This episode will be useful for anyone interested in the arts, placemaking and destination marketing. It will also be useful to those at the top of the organisation responsible for setting the culture. Our conversation got me thinking about culture's key role in marketing a place. Fiona relayed a quote from the international artist Morag Myrescough, working on a project in Weston; she said, ‘Make happy those who are near, and those who are far will come’. Join me as I talk to Fiona about their work to put creativity and culture at the heart of Weston’s community and why culture is so important in uniting people and creating distinctiveness. Digital marketing is constantly evolving, and it can be a challenge to keep up. I recently had a conversation with Jarrod Lopiccolo (CEO) and Kate Sikora (Managing Partner) from Noble Performs, a digital agency that specialises in travel and tourism marketing. With over 20 years of experience in the US, they established a UK agency in Bristol in 2019. Their clients include destinations like Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Cotswold Tourism, and St George's music venue in Bristol. In the visitor economy marketing industry, the US is often ahead of the UK. Therefore, talking to Noble was helpful in understanding what is coming down the line and what we need to plan for. During our conversation, we discussed the following topics:

| EP 40 - The state of the domestic group market in 2024, with Steve Reed Tourism | 28 Mar 2024 | 00:28:21 | |
Today's Marketing Insights is all about the 'groups' market. For many years, the domestic group travel or coach tour industry has been an important part of the UK’s tourism industry. Groups have historically been guaranteed business for many tourism organisations, with up to 50 people on a coach coming often during week day and shoulder periods. However, because of the pandemic, hundreds of coach companies, many of them well established, went out of business. It's been devastating for them. So, the question I have as a marketer in the visitor economy is, should it be a market that we are still looking at trying to attract? If so, how have things changed and how do we market to these customers in 2024? I am joined on the show by group travel specialist Steve Reed from Steve Reed Tourism to talk to me about it. | EP 41 How working with the overseas travel trade could really help your business, with Jon Chamberlain and Mike Newman | 29 Apr 2024 | 01:17:23
In this podcast episode, we focus on increasing bookings from inbound travellers or overseas tourists through the travel trade. Jon has been working for 11 years to promote Bristol, Bath, and the surrounding areas as a European leisure destination. Mike helps destinations and businesses prepare their offers for the travel trade and represents them at shows worldwide. Many of us in the UK use travel agents like TUI or Jet2 for our holidays, and the rest of the world does the same. We discuss some of the questions that operators focused mainly on the domestic market may have. We cover topics including:
Moreover, we discuss the importance of viewing commission as profit, not cost, attending large European trade shows like ITB Berlin, and the success of the VisitWest's campaign, 'The England you know but better.' | EP 42 Ticketing system frustrations? Make yours work more effectively for you with Sarah Bagg | 08 May 2024 | 00:19:38
In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Sarah Bagg, founder of ReWork Consulting, about getting the best ticketing or booking system to support your business needs. As a marketer, I've worked with several solutions, and I've noticed that most of them lack the automated link from email to CRM system. As a result, it's challenging to execute smart marketing strategies without manual intervention. This can be frustrating and time-consuming. It restricts personalisation and generally feeds a lack of enthusiasm for email marketing. Since ticketing or booking systems are at the core of many businesses in the visitor economy, I wanted to speak with an expert in this area. Sarah is well-versed in operational systems supporting all departments and has many years of experience working in this area of the visitor economy, both on the client and supplier sides. Any investment in a new system is a huge undertaking. Sarah has some really useful advice for those thinking about it. She also has some suggestions for those who have already made the investment and have found their system lacking. Enjoy the episode! | EP 44 From Boomtown to Wake the Tiger - How this festival organiser created a successful visitor attraction in the heart of Bristol | 08 Jul 2024 | 00:52:26
In today's episode, my conversation with Graham MacVoy, Managing Director of the visitor attraction Wake the Tiger in Bristol, truly blew my mind. Wake the Tiger is the permanent 'baby' created by the team running the unique Boomtown festival. The pandemic has much to answer for, but it gave Graham and his directors the headspace to provide a more permanent base for their creative ideas, so the 'amazement park' Wake the Tiger was created and opened in 2022. I listened in awe in this episode as Graham revealed how his love of snowboarding led to his career running snowboarding events in Europe, which led to his owning a company that led operations at festivals such as Creamfields, BST Hyde Park, and Boomtown. Graham talked about how the Wake the Tiger was a huge punt of an idea which thankfully saw 190,000 in its first year of operations. Wake the Tiger has brought Boomtown's talent and creativity into a permanent space that blows people’s minds and challenges us to think differently and creatively to make a difference to our lives and our planet. He discusses everything from learning to run a visitor attraction to the importance of the arts and creativity in changing society. Graham is an inspiration, and his out-of-the-box thinking about how we should behave as human beings and what is important certainly left me questioning everything about life! He also talks about his love for his hometown of Dursley, Gloucestershire, on the Cotswold Way. I hope you enjoy the episode. Just a year after opening its doors in 2021, The Parkgate Hotel scooped the prestigious AA Hotel of the Year for Wales title. Damien gives us an inside look at the hotel’s success and shares what it takes to run a standout hospitality business. One of the hotel's big highlights is its restaurant, The Sorting Room, which has earned two AA Rosettes for its exceptional cuisine. Damien talks about how keeping things simple and consistent in everything has helped them create a dining experience that guests love. Cardiff is a city on the rise, and Damien explains how it compares to nearby places like Bristol. With major events, like international rugby matches and concerts at the nearby Principality Stadium, The Parkgate Hotel is ideally located to take advantage of the buzz and excitement. | 5. What it takes to manage operations at Cheltenham BID with Belinda Hunt | 30 Mar 2022 | 00:42:28
In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Belinda Hunt, Operations Manager at Cheltenham BID (Business Improvement District). The regency spa town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire was made popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as a place the wealthy travelled to – for entertainment and to drink the spa water, said to provide ‘healing properties’. Today, Cheltenham is a cosmopolitan town with a population of 117,000, known for its horse racing, educational establishments and an enviable position next to the Cotswolds. The town’s stunning regency architecture provides a beautiful backdrop for a packed programme of some of the UK’s best festivals and events, such as the Cheltenham Literature Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. It has an assortment of fabulous restaurants, cafes and bars, plus a shopping offer to die-for (ok, maybe that’s just for someone like me!). Cheltenham BID supports businesses in the heart of the town centre. And Belinda, who is originally from Zimbabwe, tells us about her job at Cheltenham BID and about the BID’s role in supporting local businesses. She talks about the need for collaboration and the type of events that drive footfall and sales for the retail and hospitality businesses of the town. We chat about the different businesses that grew and changed during the pandemic and how the likes of high street retailer John Lewis is doing a great job of supporting local businesses with its initiatives. It was lovely to find out more about Belinda, how she got to where she is today and what she likes to do outside of work. It was also wonderful to hear one of her amusing memories of Kevan Blackadder, friend and former director of Cheltenham BID, who sadly died in 2021. Apologies for the slightly dodgy sound quality and I hope you enjoy the episode.
