This mind-blowing scientific reality perfectly captures the spirit of our conversation with Daan Roosegaarde, the visionary lighting designer who, despite being kicked out of fine art school twice, found his calling in pushing the boundaries of what light can achieve.

The divide between theory and practice in healthcare design couldn't be more evident than in lighting strategies for medical spaces. Through an illuminating exploration of two contrasting Hong Kong medical facilities, we discover how the same foundational goal—promoting health and wellbeing—manifests in dramatically different design approaches based on context, clientele, and purpose.

Most fascinating is how these case studies challenge our assumptions about "clinical" environments. The first project, Laguna City Medical Center, completely reimagines what a neighbourhood GP clinic can feel like. Located in a windowless basement serving diverse demographics, its designers rejected sterile lighting conventions in favour of bright, joyful spaces with curved elements and simulated daylight. The lighting strategy thoughtfully distinguishes between waiting areas (using indirect, warmer lighting to reduce anxiety) and examination rooms (featuring direct illumination with higher colour temperatures for clinical accuracy). This approach transforms what could have been a drab medical office into a space that actively contributes to healing.

The contrast with Cosmax Cosmetic Centre couldn't be more striking. This high-end aesthetic medical facility in Hong Kong's Central Business District serves an elite clientele seeking discretion and luxury. Rather than brightness, its lighting design employs dramatic shadows, minimal direct illumination, and carefully crafted privacy through light and darkness. Patients move through a choreographed journey from reception to treatment to recovery, with lighting that simultaneously guides and shields them from view—particularly important for celebrity clients who don't want to be recognised post-procedure.

What makes this examination so valuable is its reminder that good design isn't about rigid adherence to standards or benchmarks, but about understanding human needs within specific contexts. Whether creating an affordable neighbourhood clinic that radiates positivity or an exclusive medical sanctuary that prioritises privacy, thoughtful lighting transforms how we experience healthcare spaces. Ready to rethink what your medical environments could feel like? These case studies prove that with empathy and creativity, every healthcare space can be designed to truly support wellbeing.

Is lighting design an art or a science?  In this episode we feature Koert Vermeulen from ACT Lighting Design, based in Brussels, Belgium.  Koert was one of our earliest thought leaders to share on the Virtual Lighting Design Community platform and it was certainly a memorable presentation.  

Initially, Koert's presentation was shared only with premium members of the community.  However, since opening up the community to a wider audience late last year and introducing free memberships, everyone will be able to have access to the great information shared by our earlier presenters.  We have seen a tremendous amount of new members join the community and this is why we are excited to re-release this episode again. Founder & Design Director at In'Sight Lighting Design, Philip Rafael explores a critical element often overlooked in workplace design: lighting. With over 18 years of global experience, Philip sheds light on how traditional lighting has prioritised productivity over well-being, sometimes to the detriment of employee health and job satisfaction. He explains how a shift in focus can lead to healthier, happier work environments by minimising negative lighting effects like glare and flicker. Lighting can be reimagined to support not just physical health but also mental, emotional, and social well-being, especially as hybrid offices become the norm.

In this episode we go back a couple of years when Philip presented this topic at the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2023.  It was certainly a memorable event and the topic is still very relevant and pertinent today.

Philip discussed the importance of flexible and inclusive lighting environments that cater to both extroverts and introverts, advocating for the adoption of biophilic and multi-sensory designs, to name some of the highlights. 

The take home message included how these strategies can thrive even within conservative company cultures, ultimately creating dynamic spaces that encourage self-regulation and community connection. By integrating scientific criteria with innovative design, he aims to craft workspaces that genuinely nurture the health and well-being of today’s workforce.

Welcome back to the Virtual Lighting Design Community Podcast! In this special episode, we are thrilled to revisit a familiar face in the world of lighting design.  Dr. Shelley James, with over two decades of experience and expertise in the industry, she graced our previous episode as part of the Lighting Heroes Series.

This time, we had the honour of capturing Shelley delivering a keynote presentation at this year’s Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition (GILE) back in June 2023 in China.  Her talk was titled: "Drivers for Change: Shifting the Conversation from Cost to Value".  A great listen.

As a passionate designer, researcher, and educator, Shelley has left an indelible mark on the field of lighting design, with her innovative work showcased on global platforms such as the London 2012 Olympic Games and the iconic Shard in London.  

Her innovative approach to lighting has earned her many accolades and recognition, including the Lighting Designer of the Year award from the Lighting Design Awards in 2015. Dr James is also a passionate advocate for sustainability and the environment.
