Episode 67: Female Sterilization07 Jun 202500:48:08

Public health is meant to protect us—but history shows it can also be used to control us. In the 20th century, tens of thousands of people, mostly women, were forcibly sterilized. In this podcast, we dig into the unsettling history of forced sterilization in the United States. From historical eugenics laws to the current realities of reproductive justice, we’ll explore how public health policies crossed the line, and why understanding this history still matters today.

Episode 41 - Blood Donation, Transfusion, and LGBTQIA+ Populations30 Jun 201900:57:17

Greetings and happy summer!

Today we have an episode about the history of blood donation and transfusions as it pertains to public health, helping people recover from injuries and illness, and why some laws regarding who can donate are still out of date for certain populations, especially the LGBTQIA+ community.

Here is the link Linsey referenced regarding the FDA’s request for public comment. The period to submit comments ended in 2016 (we were incorrect in the podcast episode) but we’ll look to see if there’s anything new!

Episode 14 - Public Health and Climate Change07 Jul 201700:54:44

Can't we all just come to a consensus?  Well, most scientists have on the subject of climate change.  In this episode, we talk briefly about climate change and discuss how it impacts public health.  We interview Linda Rudolph, MD, MPH, the Director of the Center for Climate Change and Health at the Public Health Institute.  Dr. Rudolph discusses how we can harness the power of public health efforts to impact climate change and explains "health in all policies."  We also talk with Dayna Lazarus, a community organizer with Organize Florida.  Dayna is a passionate climate change and social justice advocate here in the Tampa Bay area.  We discuss what community organizing is and why it is important to moving policy forward in addressing issues like climate change.
