Nadja [00:23]
"Sievert Pt. 1"
Sv
Broken Spine Productions BSP015 2023 (original release 2016)
Doomy ambient goodness from Aidan and Leah once again.
Eurythmics [22:32]
"Love Is a Stranger"
Sweet Dreams Are Made of This
RCA AFL1-4681 1983
Side one, track one from their sophomore album, with a classic video (https://youtu.be/o6f593X6rv8?si=JdUQVqkJ6oVbYuni) to go along for the ride. Plus, high harmonies by Kiki Dee (https://youtu.be/z0qW9P-uYfM?si=y9ywrtnrvrpZvDqI)!
Mose Allison [26:15]
"Stop This World"
Swingin' Machine
Atlantic SD 1398 1963
Amen, Mose. Throwing in some horns is not quite the same as the classic trio from the preceding album I Don't Worry About a Thing, but it's still pretty great.
Wendy Carlos [29.38]
"Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major - Third Movement"
Switched-On Bach
Columbia Masterworks MS 7194 1968
Carlos collaborated with Bob Moog on his nascent synthesizer technology to create this album. Because the Moogs were monophonic, it took 1,000 hours over five months to record. In case you are wondering what a traditional version of this movement sounds like, here is the Netherlands Bach Society performing it (https://youtu.be/qr0f6t2UbOo?si=yiW4DA0AxFSb3sB5&t=370).
The Police [34:44]
"Miss Gradenko"
Synchronicity
A&M Records SP-3735 1983
The requisite Stewart Copeland track from final album by The Police.
Ultravox [38:18]
"Slow Motion"
Systems of Romance
Antilles AN-7069 1978
Lead track and single from Ultravox's third studio album, which became a large influence on Gary Numan (https://youtu.be/_nt5EH0UYxE?si=pm0h_4YWwXlCKJks).
T. Rex [41:44]
"20th Century Boy"
T. Rextasy: The Best of T. Rex, 1970-1973
Warner Bros. Records 25333-1 1985
As usual, Marc Bolan lays down an undeniable groove (https://youtu.be/9SG65dlho_o?si=4Q8NPlKJc_87trVQ), produced by Tony Visconti. I almost forgot about the sax parts.
Can [45:23]
"Mushroom"
Tago Mago
United Artists Records 1971 (2007 "unofficial" repress)
Tago Mago was Damo first outing with the band, following Malcolm Mooney's departure. According to guitarist Michael Karoli, the explosion at the end of the song is a slowed-down recording of an exploding firecracker.
Zola Jesus [49:41]
"Long Way Down"
Taiga
Mute 9611-1 2014
Zola Jesus' fourth studio album and only outing on Mute (before returning to Sacred Bones). Produced by musician, sound designer, and composer Dean Hurley.
The Folk Implosion [54:49]
"Had to Find Out"
Take a Look Inside......
Communion Label COMM 32 1994
The debut album from Lou Barlow and John Davis... released 30 years ago!
Stevie Wonder [56:55]
"You Are the Sunshine of My Life"
Talking Book
Tamla T319L 1972
What?! It's a great song. And it was the single that followed up "Supersition". That's a heckuva gear shift. Number one on the Hot 100, of course.
Silver Jews [59:53]
"Sometimes a Pony Gets Depressed"
Tanglewood Numbers
Drag City DC297 2005
A rehabilitated Dave Berman comes back with this album, the fifth studio album. He is joined once again by Bob Nastanovich and Stephen Malkmus, as well as his then-wife Cassie Berman. Cover photo by William Eggleston.

Rare Book Room Records RBR005 2009
Blistering Roxy Music cover (https://youtu.be/boo5PDjf1Es?si=j-vWw2hnjJrb98DJ) from this Brooklyn duo (https://youtu.be/BgdDDJEzhJA?si=rXvYkftPvYkA8bJ4).
Suicidal Tendencies [10:17]
"Won't Fall in Love Today"
Suicidal Tendencies
Frontier Records FLP 1011 1983

Wayne Newton [16:58]
"Summer Wind"
Summer Wind
Capitol Records T 2389 1965
A young Mr. Entertainment taking a pass at this Johnny Mercer number adapted from a German/Danish single by Gerthe Ingmann (https://youtu.be/d_wWy79DV0E?si=tyb8AIlZ0iv0PdJ7). I will forever associate this song with Martin singing this song (https://youtu.be/d_wWy79DV0E?si=tyb8AIlZ0iv0PdJ7) at the end of The Simpsons episode Bart of Darkness (S06E01).
Thou [19:33]
"Grissecon"
Summit
Gilead Media relic 31 2018
An excellent reissue of Thou's 2010 album Summit originally released on Southern Lord, along with material from The Archer and The Owle EP released on Robotic Empire. I still think it is amazing that Thou were the first metal band to appear on NPR's Tiny Desk (https://youtu.be/IUVYgCwpv7Y?si=tOq09uk2XAP45o5x) (minus lead vocalist Bryan Funck).
Be-Bop Deluxe [27:55]
"Heavenly Homes"
Sunburst Finish
Harvest ST-11478 1976
Some excellent melodic guitar dynamics on this track from Bill Nelson and co's third studio album.

Earl-Jean McCrea [36:09]
"I'm Into Something Good"
Super Girls
Lake Shore Music OP 3507 1979
_As seen on TV (https://youtu.be/K2t9Iwl07sA?si=JmonzgyBe6Sr8MuV)! Forty original hits by forty original artists. In mono! Earl-Jean of the Cookies sends this original recording of the Goffin and King hit shortly thereafter by Herman's Hermits. _
1000 Homo DJs [38:56]
"Supernaut"
Supernaut
Wax Trax! Records WAX 9133 1990
Peak Industrial cover from Al Journgensen and friends. Certainly not as good as the Sabbath orignal (https://youtu.be/nUb0QaDjP78?si=QtuvXBJhZNFU4yFM) but still makes an impact, though it does go on a bit.
Matt Sweeney and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy [45:33]
"Bed Is for Sleeping"
Superwolf
Drag City DC179 2005
Excellent collaboration between the two, with some excellent illustrations by Matt and Spencer Sweeney. Produced by Superwolfmen.
Jefferson Airplane [49:42]
"White Rabbit"
Surrealistic Pillow
RCA Victor LSP-3766 1967
Normally I would go with "Plastic Fantastic Lover (https://youtu.be/NUc8vkO3oxY?si=OBKbSnjAAEQsJMbK)", but as I've said before, sometimes you gotta go with the hits. Grace was evidently inspired by Miles Davis' Sketches in Spain when coming up with the music from this piece.
Survive [52:11]
"Sorceror"
Survive RR7349
Relapse Records RR7349 2016
Some tasty synthwave from the band behind the Stranger Things sound.
Shizuko and Shinichi Suzuki [56:31]
"Long, Long Ago (Bayly)"
Suzuki Violin School, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Summy-Birchard Music CSM 1387 1970
I was a child violin prodigy... until I had to read music.
Quintron and Miss Pussycat [57:10]
"Witch in the Club"
Swamp Tech
Tigerbeat 6 MEOW119LP 2005
Organ magic from the one and only Quintron and the amazing Miss Pussycat. I'll have to remember this track for next Halloween.

The Shirts [mm:ss]
"Teenage Crutch"
The Shirts
Capitol Records SW-11791 1978 (US pressing)
(see below)
The Shirts [mm:ss]
"Reduced to a Whisper"
The Shirts
Harvest 5C 062-06 717 1978 (Netherlands pressing)
That's right, not one but 2 (two!) tracks from The Shirts' debut album. Normally, I am not one to buy 2 copies of the same album, but when I was in Amsterdam a couple of years ago, I came across the Netherlands pressing with a more stylized cover and couldn't resist. They were one of the original CBGB bands that saw more success in Europe. You can also spot lead singer Annie Golden in the film adaptation of Hair (Forman, 1979) (https://youtu.be/VN5zup3b7fw?si=859TcqBo5ArA0iD2).
Philharmonic Symphony of New York, Dimitri Mitropoulos [mm:ss]
"Second Movement: Allegretto"
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 Op. 47
Columbia Masterworks ML 4739 1962
Composed by the Soviet Russian Shostakovich in 1937, this recording dates to 1953.
Robyn Hitchcock [mm:ss]
"Socrates in Thin Air"
Shufflemania!
Tiny Ghost Records TINY GHOST 07 2022
Great outing from Mr. Hitchcock from a couple of years ago. Joined here by Soft Boy cohort Kimberley Rew on guitar.
Los Campesinos! [mm:ss]
"5 Flucloxacillin"
Sick Scenes
Wichita WEBB500LP 2017
The wonderful 6th album from these Cardiff folks. Self-financed, no less! There is a supercute video for this song done in the style of the BBC show Flog It! (https://youtu.be/aoqs0PJ12zM?si=rIefWNr2Mwj3F3-d)
Thompson Twins [mm:ss]
"We Are Detective"
Side Kicks
Arista AL 6607 1983
So much floppy hair. The trio's third single from their third album. A suitably 80s video was also made for this track. (https://youtu.be/l2SMSoblH3Y?si=jw9yBHEFqSlCRxvH)
Raspberries [mm:ss]
"Tonight"
Side 3
Capitol Records SMAS-11220 1973
Speaking of third albums. This song was the first of three singles from the album and reached number 69 on the Hot 100.
Rush [mm:ss]
"New World Man"
Signals
Mercury SRM-1-4063 1982
Rush's only Top 40 single, oddly enough. From the last album produced by Terry Brown. Sure, I could have chosen "Subdivisions" but if you were like me and were a suburban early-teenage male when this album came out, it was pretty inescapable and hence not really necessary to revisit.
Boz Scaggs [mm:ss]
"Lido Shuffle"
Silk Degrees
Columbia PC 33920 1976
Speaking of ubiquitous songs from my youth. With Mr. Scaggs himself on the Moog riffs.
Sqürl [mm:ss]
"John Ashbery Takes a Walk"
Silver Haze
Sacred Bones Records SBR-316 2023
Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan, assisted here by Charlotte Gainsbourg in an homage to the poet John Ashbery. There's a nice moody video to accompany this song as well (https://youtu.be/EdlCG4aw7Q4?si=nQisL8r1JTM_vHrk).
Klaus Nomi [mm:ss]
"Falling in Love Again"
Simple Man
RCA Victor PL 37702 1982
A contemporary update of the Marlene Dietrich classic (https://youtu.be/8gAo2aR_tUw?si=jpfY2F2guahlnPea) from the iconic Klaus Nomi's second album.
Kris Kristofferson [mm:ss]
"The Pilgrim - Chapter 33"
The Silver Tongued Devil and I
Monument Z 30679 1971
If I were Donnie Fritts (which I can only aspire to), I would have definitely had my name legally changed to Funky Donnie Fritts.
Nine Inch Nails [mm:ss]
"Sin (Short)"
Sin
TVT Records TVT2617-1 1990
Why it seems like 33 1/3 years ago that this album was released.
Frank Sinatra [mm:ss]
"When Somebody Loves You"
Sinatra '65
Reprise RS-6167 1965
That is some bizarre stereo separation.
Frank Sinatra [mm:ss]
"Witchcraft"
Sinatra's Sinatra
Reprise Records R9-1010 1963
Some of Frank's big hits, recompiled here for his own label.
Dwight Twilley Band [mm:ss]
"I'm on Fire"
Sincerely
Shelter Records SRL-52001 1976
Some primo power pop kicking off Dwight Twilley Band's debut outing on the already-doomed at the time Shelter Records.
Music behind the DJ: "Diamonds Are Forever (Instrumental)" by John Barry

| 45s and Other Revolutions: More A-Sides beginning with the letter Y as in Yankee. | 04 Dec 2019 | 01:04:00 | |
Al Stewart [00:31]
a side: "Year of the Cat"
b side: "Broadway Hotel"
Janus Records J-266 1976
Scotsman Al Stewart penned this Alan Parsons-produced classic, which made it all the way up to number 8 on the Hot 100. Definitely sounds like the mid-70s to me ear. Fun fact: Janus Records was originally extension of England's Pye Records.
Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames [09:00]
a side: "Yeh, Yeh"
b side: "Preach and Teach"
Imperial Records 66086 1965
This toe tapping classic originally started as an instrumental originally recorded by Mongo Santamaria in 1963, and then shortly thereafter had lyrics added by Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Then in 1965 Englishman Georgie Fame.
Birds of America [14:18]
a side: "Yes! I Know I Am Free"
b side: "Untitled"
Isota Records sody001 2001
The very first Isota Records release, featuring a fantastic letterpress sleeve by Nathaniel Russell printed at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley CA.
Loretta Lynn [23:31]
a side: "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)"
b side: "You're Lookin' at Country"
MCA Records MCA-53576 1966/1971
An MCA Double Play! The a-side features Loretta's 1966 smash hit "You Ain't Woman Enough", her eighth single to make it into the top 10, up to number 2. The flipside features her 1971 single that made it up to number 5 on the country charts.
Jun Mayuzumi [29:06]
a side: "You and the Sun"
b side: "My Love, My Love"
Capitol Records CP-1040 1969
Another fine single from late 1960s Japan, the a-side in A minor for those of you playing along at home. I have it on good authority that a-side "Fushigina Taiyou" directly translates to "Strange Sun" but "You and the Sun" works fine to.
Bongwater [35:39]
a side: "You Don't Love Me Yet"
b side: "The Porpoise Song"
Shimmy Disc Records shimmy 7-98 1988
All killer no filler on this Shimmy Disc single featuring Ann Magnuson, Dave Rick & Kramer bringing us a Roky Erickson tune on the a-side and Goffin-King-by-way-of-The-Monkees b-side The Porpoise Song.
Harry Dean Stanton [46:42]
a side: "You Don't Miss Your Water"
b side: "Across the Borderline"
Rx Remedy Records RXR 015 1993
The late great Harry Dean Stanton joined by pals Jamie James, Skunk Baxter, Slim Jim Phantom, and Tony Sales.
Etta James [57:29]
a side: "You Got It"
b side: "Fire"
Cadet 5620 1968
The follow-up single to her super hot rendition of "I Got You", somehow "You Got It" only made to number 113. What gives?
Music behind the DJ: "Audrey's Dance" by Angelo Badalamenti.

| 45s and Other Revolutions: Some A-Sides beginning with the letter W as in Whiskey, and some that begin with the letter Y as in Yankee. | 28 Nov 2019 | 00:59:01 | |
Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds [00:41]
a side: "Winners and Losers"
b side: "Barroom Blues"
Playboy Records P 6054 1975
Both kinds of music... "Country-ish" and Disco? The follow up to "Fallin in Love". This time out they only made it up to number 21 on the Hot 100.
Red Fang [08:49]
a side: "Wires"
b side: "LSP"
Relapse Records RR1091-1 2011
Hot and heavy stuff from these Portland gents. As per usual with Red Fang, there's a pretty epic video to accompany this a-side (https://youtu.be/WQPfQvLIseA). Fun fact for fans of The Decemberists: Jenny Conlee and Chris Funk also perform on this record. Oh my glob! Maybe the b-side is about Lumpy Space Princess?
Architecture in Helsinki [19:12]
a side: "Wishbone"
b side: "Wishbone - Rah Teeti Remix"
Moshi Moshi Records moshi 36 2006
Antipodeans AIH bring us some charming sounds of 2006 with this single from their album In Case We Die.
Nilsson [25:55]
a side: "Without You"
b side: "Me and My Arrow"
RCA Victor 447-0924 1971
The a-side of this reissue single often seems way longer than it's 3 minutes and 16 seconds it claims on the label. Time surely is relative. Thankfully the flipside is a super catchy antidote.
King Curtis and the Noble Knights [31:57]
a side: "Wobble Twist"
b side: "Twistin' with the King"
Enjoy Records EJ-4 1962
If there's twising involved, it must be the early 60s.
The Mekons [37:06]
a side: "Work All Week"
b side: "Unknown Wrecks"
Virgin Records VS 300 1979
Definitely a certain kind of something.
Village People [44:34]
a side: "Y.M.C.A."
b side: "The Women"
Casablanca Records NB 945 1978
Yes, that late 70s smash hit, kept out of the number 1 spot by Chic's "Le Freak" and Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy". Yeah, it was that kind of year.
George Jones [52:01]
a side: "Ya Ba Da Do! (So Are You)"
b side: "Ya Ba Da Do! (So Are You)"
Epic Records 34 68743 1988
Ol' No Show finds solace in a ghost and a cartoon. Heck, you can't blame him. Sadly he just missed making the Top 25 for this first time in 30 years thanks to this novelty number.
Music behind the DJ: "Aquarius" by Joe Reisman and his Orchestra.

| 45s and Other Revolutions: Yet Still Even More A-Sides beginning with the letter W as in Whiskey. | 19 Nov 2019 | 01:11:19 | |
Velvet Underground [00:33]
a side: "Who Loves the Sun (mono)"
b side: "Who Loves the Sun (stereo)"
Cotillion Records 45-44107 1971
A suitably Lou Reed-esque lyric, sung but Doug Yule.
Deerhoof w/ special Guest Marc Ribot a side: "Who Sleeps, Only Dreams" [06:09]
Ceramic Dog b side: "Hide with Me" [09:20]
Northern Spy Records NS 053 2014
Yup, this is pretty much my dream split. The first Bay Area band that flipped my switch after moving out here, and my favorite guitarist that I tried to see at every opportunity when I live in NYC.
The Archies [14:48]
a side: "Who's Your Baby"
b side: "Senorita Rita"
Kirshner Records 63-5003 1969
Bubblegum pop with a gospel break on the a-side, and a latin themed flipside? The Archies covering all the bases with this 45.
DeBarge [20:17]
a side: "Who's Holding Donna Now?"
b side: "Be My Lady"
Gordy Records 1793GF 1985
Now that is some smooth r&b. No wonder it made it all the way to number 6 on the Hot 100.
Eurythmics [29:25]
a side: "Who's that Girl?"
b side: "Aqua"
RCA Records PB-13800 1983

Uncle Wiggly a side: "With My" [43:48]
Dean Wareham b side: "Indian Summer" [45:47]
Beat Happening b side: "Foggy Eyes" [48:50]

b side: "The Unsinkable Fats Domino"

RCA Records GB-10162 1973
The grooviest of bass grooves performed by journeyman Herbie Flowers on both upright and fretless electric basses. And in this 1975 reissue, a vicious b-side. The original single was released in 1972 as a double a-side with "Perfect Day". Hunt down the Classic Albums episode of Transformer if you haven't already seen it. You won't be disappointed.
Ko Ko Taylor [13:20]
a side: "Wang Dang Doodle"
b side: "Blues Heaven"
Checker Records 1135 1966
A hot hot single from Ms. Taylor, with the song's writer Willie Dixon joining in on vocals and Buddy Guy along side Johnny "Twist" Williams on guitar.
Freddy Fender [18:45]
a side: "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights"
b side: "I Love My Rancho Grande"
ABC Dot Records DOA-17558 1975
A very successful re-recording of his 1959 Duncan Records single. This one made it all the way up to number 8 on the US Hot 100. On the flipside we have some mighty fine Tejano.
Kowloon Walled City a side: "The Way It Will Be" [25:17]
Dangers b side, track 1: "This Mystic Decade" [30:38]
Thou b side, track 2: "Constantly" [34:14]
Lingua Ignota b side, track 3: "Sexless/No Sex" [36:33]
Sisters in Christ SIC004 2019
Released as a benefit for their store in New Orleans, this Sisters in Christ features Kowloon Walled City covering Gillian Welch with friends of KWTF Josh Staples and Sara Sanger on vocals, Dangers covering Hot Snakes, Thou covering Cower, and Lingua Ignota covering Iron Lung.
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy [38:17]
a side: "We All, Us Three, Will Ride"
b side: "Barcelona"
Isota Records sody005 2002
Another fine Isota Records release, this time from Will Oldham. The a-side is a revision of his earlier "We All, Us Three, Will Ride" from Palace Music's 1995 Viva Last Blues and the flipside a rollicking tale about the Catalonian capital.
The Go-Go's [49:28]
a side: "We Got the Beat"
b side: "Can't Stop the World"
I.R.S. Records IR-9903 1981
The breakout his from the L.A. ladies we visited in the last episode that evidently stemmed out of their covering The Miracles "Going to a Go Go". The b-side is pretty great too.
Runt [55:22]
a side: "We Gotta Get You a Woman"
b side: "Baby Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands"
Ampex Records X-31001 1970
Todd Rundgren's post-Nazz pre-solo album, which is basically Tood plus the Sales brothers. This single made it to number 20 on the Hot 100 and would later be covered by The Four Tops.
Music behind the DJ: "A View to a Kill (That Fatal Kiss)" by John Barry.

b side: "My Sisters' and My Brothers' Day Is Coming"
Original Sound OS-91 1970
Uhh... yeah!
Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys [05:38]
a side: "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water"
b side: "Carnival Bear"
Capitol Records 2110 1968
Pretty fine a-side, pretty dreary b-side. Ah well, ya can't win 'em all. No wonder it only made it to number 93 on the Hot 100.
The Gogo's [12:03]
a side: "Vacation"
b side: "Beatnik Beach"
IRS Records IR-9907 1982
It really is all I ever wanted. New Wave pop perfection for these LA Ladies.
Visqueen [17:58]
a side: "Vaccine"
b side: "His Way"
Blue Disguise Records BD001 2002
Some high quality power pop from the PNW featuring Rachel Flotard on guitar, Kim Warnick on bass, and Ben Hooker on drums.
Frank Zappa [24:43]
a side: "Valley Girl"
b side: "You Are What Is"
Barking Pumpkin Records WS9 02972 1982
A bitchin single from Mr. Zappa and daughter Moon Unit. His only single to hit the Hot 100, reaching number 34.
Naked Raygun [32:32]
a side: "Vanilla Blue"
b side: "Slim"
Sandpounder Records SR 001 1987
Remember that Downtown Beirut jukebox I mentioned an episode or two ago? Well, this "Vanilla Blue" was usually selection number 3 for me.
Duran Duran [39:43]
a side: "A View to a Kill"
b side: "A View to a Kill (That Fatal Kiss)"
Capitol Records B-5475 1985
If I recall, this film was not one of Roger Moore's best, but hoo boy... Grace Jones! And Christopher Walken! Also, I guess I know what I'll be using for a bed track next time ^.^
Cheap Trick [45:52]
a side: "Voices"
b side: "Voices"
Epic Records 9-50814 1979
A very Beatle-esque power ballad from Chicago's finest. Peaked at number 32 on the Hot 100.

a side: "The Tra-La-La Song/That's the Pretty Part of You"
b side: "It's a Good Day for a Parade/The Very First Kid on My Block"
Hannah-Barbera Records 34578 1969
Track 1, Side 1 is indeed that theme song to the soundtrack of my brain. That second track on the a-side is... seemingly nice but also kinda backhanded? Or is it just me? Oddly, this single only just cracked the Hot 100.
The Cuff Links [09:04]
a side: "Tracy"
b side: "Where Did You Go?"
Decca Records 32533 1969
Whaddya know, more bubblegum this time from Staten Island! Featuring Ron Dante, who some may also recognize as the lead singer of The Archies. Peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100.
The Jimmy Castor Bunch [14:13]
a side: "Troglodyte (Cave Man)"
b side: "I Promise to Remember"
RCA Records 48-1029 1972
Ah yes, comedy funk. It funked itself all the way up to #6 on the Hot 100, and number 4 on the R&B charts. And the b-side, a funky rendition of a song Jimmy Castor co-wrote for Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
Ronnie Spector [20:26]
a side: "Try Some, Buy Some"
b side: "Tandoori Chicken"
Apple Records 1832 1971
Ok, I'll admit it. I got this for the b-side. You know I love a good food-related song. The a-side was a difficult attempt at a come back, written by George Harrison and co-produced by the Mono Man himself, Phil Spector.
The Sundowners [28:19]
a side: "Turkey Vulture/Tonight Will Be Fine/Punk Rock"
b side: "Goats/Pozor/Tallulah"
Sea Note Records SN-4 1994
You guessed correctly! It's a collaboration between Will Oldham & Bill Callahan, coincidentally released on my birthday in 1994.
Golden Earring [42:33]
a side: "Twilight Zone"
b side: "King Dark"
21 Records T1 103 1982
From the Dutch band that brought us "Radar Love", we have this 1982 chartbuster that I would say is largely forgotten today. Evidently inspired by Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity.
Alvin Cash & the Crawlers [51:45]
a side: "Twine Time"
b side: "The Bump"
Mar-V-Lus 3095 1964
Bumpity bumpity bumpity bump. That was Alvin Cash & the Crawlers bringing us their high quality Northern Soul go-to backed with an excellent Night Train-esque b-side.
The Isley Brothers [56:37]
a side: "Twistin' with Linda"
b side: "You Better Come Home"
Wand 127 1962
Round and around and around and around we go with The Isley Brothers, furthering their Twist and Shout repertoire. Made it to number 54 on the Hot 100.
Music behind the DJ: "Slow Poke" by Lawrence Welk.

45s and Other Revolutions: Yes, still more A-Sides beginning with the letter T as in Tango.
From “Time After Time” (Cyndi Lauper) to “Touch Me I'm Sick” (Sonic Youth)
Cyndi Lauper [00:36]
a side: "Time After Time"
b side: "Time After Time"
Portrait Records 37-04432 1983
A fine collaboration with Rob Hyman of The Hooters.
Todd Rundgren [04:29]
a side: "Time Heals"
b side: "Tiny Demons"
Bearsville Records BHS 3522-EP 1981
A fine 7" to be played at 33 1/3 for a 3 minute and 33 second a-side, included as a bonus disc in Todd Rundgren's 1981 album Healing. This is a song that looms large in my Songs That form the Soundtrack of My Mind. Why? Perhaps because it was the 8th video ever played on MTV and it left a lasting impression on my impressionable adolescent self. And the chord progression has bedeviled my remedial musical skills for years. Fun fact, but not terribly surprising: Todd Rundgren plays all the instruments.
Change of Heart a side: "Tired of Waking Up Tired/Mythology" [11:53]
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet b side: "Tired of Waking Up Tired/The Alouette, She Was Canada's First Satellite, Way Before the Americans Even" [18:10]
Cargo Records CAR-702 1991
A little trip North of the Border from the early 90s, and more fun with revolutions. Change of Heart's side is 33 1/3 while Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet is 45rpm.
Lulu [22:11]
a side: "To Sir with Love"
b side: "The Boat that I Row"
Epic Records 5-10187 1967
A classic a-side from the movie of the same name, and a killer rendition of Neil Diamond's "The Boat that I Row" which had been released in the US earlier in the year. This single ranked number 1 on Billboard's year-end chart for 1967. Interestingly, another Neil Diamond spent the most time at number one in 1967: The Monkees version of "I"m a Believer".
The Archies [29:12]
a side: "Together We Two"
b side: "Everything's Alright"
Kirshner Records 63-5009 1969
Did you know that Billboard had a Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart? It's true, and this song made it to number 22 on that chart in 1970, which I suppose means that it made it to number 122?
Eddie Lovette [34:11]
a side: "Too Experienced"
b side: "You're My Girl"
Steady Records S 124 1969
Some American rocksteady from Eddie Lovette covering Bob Andy's "Too Experienced". Some listeners may be familiar with 2 Tone second wave ska recording artists The Bodysnatchers cover of this song.
Mudhoney [40:34]
a side: "Touch Me I'm Sick"
b side: "Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More"
Sub Pop Records SP18 (second pressing) 1988
This was always my second choice on my go to selections on the jukebox at Downtown Beirut in the East Village many moons ago. My first choice was always "You're Phone's Off the Hook (But Your Not)" by X.
Sonic Youth a side: "Touch Me I'm Sick" [46:53]
Mudhoney b side: "Halloween" [49:31]
Sub Pop Records SP26 1988
Phew... apologies for the backmasking, but I'm sure you can find the uncensored versions if you try. A split proposed to Sub Pop by Sonic Youth after hearing a 5 song demo of Mudhoney. The Sonic Youth version features Alex Damen of Das Damen on lead guitar. And there's more rpm shenanigans on this one: the SY side is 45 and the Mudhoney side is 33.

Don Gardner [00:35]
a side: "There's Nothing I Want to Do (Unless It's with You)"
b side: "Let's Party"
TNT Records TNT 500A-140 1967
Well, I reckon it should be clear to most DJs that "Let's Party" is the a-side. So it goes. However I think this is going to be a fine episode, so let's party.
Tracey Ullman [05:50]
a side: "They Don't Know"
b side: "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places"
MCA Records MCA-52347 1983
Two awesome retro tracks from Ms. Ullman. "They Don't Know" is an excellent song penned by Kirsty MacColl, who astute listeners will also be familiar with her cover of Billy Bragg's"A New England" and her vocal assistance for The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York".
Talking Heads [12:56]
a side: "This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody) [stereo]"
b side: "This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody) [mono]"
Sire Records 7-29451 1983
Of course we're playing both side of this promo. It doesn't get much better than this song. Fun fact: Tina Weymouth who normally played bass in the band, played guitar on this track and guitarist Jerry Harrison held down the syhth lines with a Prophet-5. Oddly this single only made it as far as number 62 on the Hot 100.
INXS [20:41]
a side: "This Time"
b side: "I'm Over You"
Atlantic Records 7-86497 1985
The second single from their album Listen Like Thieves. Just cracked the Hot 100, making it to number 81.
Sparks [29:15]
a side: "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us"
b side: "Barbecutie"
Island Records IS 001-A 1974
Unsurprisingly no chart action in the US for this top notch Sparks single, the first from their 1974 album Kimono My House. Produced by Muff Winwood, bassist for the Spencer Davis Group and of course brother to Steve.
Elvis Costello [35:31]
a side: "This Year's Girl"
b side: "Big Tears"
Columbia Records 3-10762 1978
From his 1978 album This Year's Model, accompanied by The Attractions. And Mr. Mick Jones plays guitar on the flipside "Big Tears".
Archie Bell & the Drells [42:47]
a side: "Tighten Up"
b side: "Tighten Up Part II"
Atlantic Records 45-2478 1968
The number one song from the week I was born. What's better than Tighten Up? More Tighten Up, obviously.
The Guayaveras w/ Josh Thorpe a side: "Timber Piles" [47:57]
Aidan Baker b side: "Once Upon a Time There Was (a Beginning and an End)" [54:53]
Art Metronome 002 2010
Everything you've ever wanted to know about timber piles on the a-side, and acoustic gloriousness on the b-side. Longtime listeners of Vinyl-O-Matic will recognize Aidan Baker of Nadja as the flipside artist.
Bonus Material: excerpt from Season 5, Episode 12 of The Simpsons, "Bart Gets Famous" (1994)
Music behind the DJ: "Heat Wave" by Irving Berlin

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Apple Records SMAS-2563 1967 (1971 Los Angeles gatefold pressing)
Enjoy the stereo separation!
Billy Preston [03:58]
"Get Back"
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
RSO RS-2-4100 1978
So yeah. A soundtrack to a movie that is very much of it's time. Not only tdo we have The Bee Gees and Peter Framption as the titular band, we have Earth Wind & Fire doing "Got to Get You into My Life", George Burns doing "Fixing a Hole", Alice Cooper doing "Because", Aerosmith handling "Come Together", and my second favorite track: Steve Martin doing a wild and crazy version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" (https://youtu.be/F__uGshlbOo?si=qn4U4_ZIGttfns5E). This version of Get Back by the one and only Billy Preston still seals the deal for me. If you are inclined to check out this film, I can only say that it is very much of its time (https://youtu.be/oioCI1p6Y30?si=34PQo_XspuXmnRPc). Lord only knows how much white powder was used in the production.
Love and Rockets [07:01]
"Haunted when the Minutes Drag"
Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven
Beggars Banquet BEGA66 1985
The debut outing from 3/4 of Bauhaus. Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins do an excellent job of building an atmospheric experience to transition away from the darkness of their previous efforts.
The Moody Blues [16:29]
"You and Me"
Seventh Soujourn
Threshold THS 7 1972
Maybe it's me, but it seems like the intro could have been 8 bars or so shorter. True story: the first pair of concert tickets that I ever won from listening to the radio was for The Moody Blues on their Long Distance Voyager tour. For some reason my parents didn't think it would be appropriate for a 13 year old to go, so I got to keep the record (long since lost) and gave my tickets to the high school kids across the street.
The Cars [20:46]
"Since You're Gone"
Shake It Up
Elektra 5E-567 1981
Classic side one, track one. Dig the Frippian guitar solo.
Ornette Coleman [24:18]
"Focus on Sanity"
The Shape of Jazz to Come
Atlantic SD 1317 1959 (2010 Rhino reissue)
You and me both, Ornette. The classic quartet rounded out by legends Charlie Haden on bass, Don Cherry on cornet, and Billy Higgins on drums.
Hypnodrone Ensemble [32:36]
"Eucldian/Dodecahedral"
The Shape of Space
Calostro Records CR01 2015
Hypnotic? Check. Drone? Check? Motorik? Check? Spaceous? Check? Nailed it.
Shaun Cassidy [45:33]
"That's Rock 'n' Roll"
Shaun Cassidy
Warner Bros Records/Curb Records BS 3067 1977
Originally a minor hit for Eric Carmen in Europe, teen idol and Hardy Boy Shaun Cassidy took this dopey number to the top of the US charts.
Beastie Boys [48:19]
"Slow and Low"
She's on It
Def Jam/Columbia 44-05292 1985
Flip side to the not-quite ready for primetime "She's on It". Fun fact: I lived in the New York Metropolitan area for twenty years and never understood the appeal of White Castle.
Chelsea Wolfe [52:02]
"Unseen World"
She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She
Loma Vista LVR03941 2024
It's not often that I get to play a new release on Vinyl-O-Matic, but Chelsea Wolfe's excellent new album arrived at a synchronous moment.

Yes, the Redd Stewart/Pee Wee King classic made even more classic-er... if that's a thing.
The Parliaments [06:24]
a side: "(I Wanna) Testify"
b side: "I Can Feel the Ice Melting"
Revilot Records RV 207 1967
All killer no filler on this Parliaments outing. Keen listeners will recognize the flipside being covered by Yo La Tengo on their recent album Stuff Like That There.

b side: "In the Jungle"

a side: "That's Really Some Good"
b side: "Night Time Is the Right Time"
Stax Records S-151 1964
Hot stuff on both sides.
Lulu [34:40]
a side: "That's Really Some Good"
b side: "Here Comes the Night"
Decca Records F-12017 1964
That blistering guitar? Jimmy Page. Really. Ok, and I may have gotten my sides flipped around but we play what we play, am I right? Anyway, Rufus Thomas on one side and Bert Berns on the other... again, all killer and no filler.
Moby [40:22]
a side: "That's When I Reach for My Revolver"
b side: "Whip It"
Sub Pop Records SP377 1996
It's true kids, Moby isn't just an electronic music nerd. He's got post-punk cred and he's wearing it on his sleeve for this Sub Pop single.
The Crystals [48:42]
a side: "Then He Kissed Me"
b side: "Puddin' n' Tain"
Phillies Records COL 3201 (1963)
The flipside is actually The Alley Cats, not The Crystals as the label says. I can just see the one shot from Goodfellas in my mind whenever I hear this song.
Bonus Material: The aforementioned one shot. [56:42]

Phew, I was worried for a few bars that my stereo channels were borked, but no... it's called stereo separation. Back to back hits featuring the garage rock nugget on the A side and oddly a early 80s slow jam cover of a Philly Soul classic on the B-side.

a side: "Super Freak (Part I)"
b side: "Super Freak (Part II)"

What's better than "Super Freak", more "Super Freak" evidently. Made it all the way to number 16 on the Hot 100. And partially recorded at the Record Plant in good ol' Sausalito.
The Trashmen [07:29]
a side: "Surfin' Bird"
b side: "King of the Surf"

b side: "Bitter Lemon"
Buddha Records BDA 92 1969
See Joe Tex. Who needs to record a b-side when you can just flip the tape around? Sadly only made it to number 96 on the charts. But then again, it's no "Yummy Yummy Yummy".
The Normal [29:20]
a side: "T.V.O.D."
b side: "Warm Leatherette"
Mute Records MUTE 001 1978
AKA Daniel Miller. A little Kraftwerk-esque, a little Silver Apples-esge, a lot JG Ballard-esque.
Soft Cell [36:38]
a side: "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?"
b side: "Where Did Our Love Go?"
Sire Records PRO-S-1028 1981
Well this is convenient. Back to back synthpop. You can hear the evolution from inception to peak synthpop. Plus, more effects from the reign of Northern Soul. Also, if you haven't listened to Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret recently, or ever, you should really take it for a spin.
ABBA [45:03]
a side: "Take a Chance on Me"
b side: "I'm a Marionette"
Atlantic Records 3457 1977
Yes indeed, one year prior to bleak commentary on contemporary life that is The Normal, this top notch chartbuster from ABBA that reached number 3 on the Hot 100. And that is a very epic flipside.
Music behind the DJ: "My Bonnie Lies" by The Ventures.

a side: "Sugar Daddy"
b side: "I'm So Happy"
Motown Records M 1194F 1971

The Clique [12:41]
a side: "Sugar on Sunday"
b side: "I Am Superman"
White Whale WW 323 1969
A fine example of sunshine pop cover of a Tommy James tune on the a-side and a super b-side from these Texans. Hit number 22 on the Hot 100 in 1969.
Pavement [18:29]
a side: "Summer Babe"
b side: "Mercy Snack/Baptiss Blacktick"

Kama Sutra Records KA211 1966
Super classic single from John Sebastian and the boys, including a mighty fine b-side whose instrumental version can also be heard in Antonioni's 1966 opus "Blow Up".
Robyn Hitchcock [31:40]
a side: "Sunday Never Comes"
b side: "Take Off Your Bandages"
Tiny Ghost Records TG-02 2019
Another fantastic outing from this year by Mr. Robyn Hitchcock. The a-side is a proper recording of a demo that can be heard in the 2018 adaptation of Nick Hornby's Juliet, Naked.
The Archies [40:57]
a side: "Sunshine"
b side: "Over and Over"
Kirshner Records 63-1009 1969

b side: "Pam"
Bell Records B-804 1969
Can't say I've ever heard a song about someone named "Pam" before.

A mighty fine cover of Dwight Yoakam from these Louisville Gal on the great Thrill Jockey label. The b-side is their bandmate David Wayne Gay Fun fact: Did you know there is a K-Tel compilation called "Alt.Country Exposed Roots". It's true. Do you remember Usenet? I remember Usenet.
Shonen Knife [17:36]
a side: "Space Christmas"
b side: "Christmas Message '91"
Rockville Records ROCK6075-7 1991

Thou [25:20]
a side: "Spin the Black Circle"
b side: "No Excuses"
Sisters in Christ SIC001 2015
A very grungy 2015 Record Store Day release from Louisiana's own Thou.
The Police [34:32]
a side: "Spirits in the Material World"
b side: "Flexible Strategies"
A&M Records 2390-S 1981
If you want a glimpse into the world of conflict that is The Police, Mssr le Sting wrote this song on a Casio and wanted to keep it entirely synth based but eventually let Andy Summers play guitar along with the synth. Compromise! And the b-side is, well, very jamtastic.
Classics IV [41:21]
a side: "Spooky"
b side: "Poor People"
Imperial Records 66259 1967
That is one cool spooky groove. Fine cover versions can also be heard by Dusty Springfield (https://youtu.be/Fola80rQop4), Jazz Butcher (https://youtu.be/wFielGAVxUk), and Daniel Ash (https://youtu.be/5NYQ34Zf7Lo). The b-side "Poor People" is a bit more sunshine-y, though in my mind pales in comparison of Alan Price's completely unrelated song "Poor People". And that's... my two-cents.
The Alarm [48:26]
a side: "The Stand"
b side: "Reason 41"
IRS Records IR-9922 1983
From the land of the red dragon, The Alarm dropped this IRS single in 1983 and while if failed to chart in the US, it did receive plenty of rotation on good ol' MTV.

The Royal Guardsmen [30:54]
a side: "Snoopy vs the Red Baron"
b side: "I Needed You"
Laurie Records LR 3366 1966
And now a glimpse into Your Old Pal Will's mind. A dream I had once upon a time regarding The 50/50s- There we were. Playing a show in the basement of a library. We had launched into our new cover song, a mashup of The Dream Syndicate’s “The Days of Wine and Roses” and Tears for Fears “Mad World” (here in the waking world, this not our current cover). Just then I spotted someone leaving the show with my copy of The Royal Guardsmen “Snoopy vs The Red Baron” 45. Naturally I had to nab the culprit, so I passed my guitar to that “Max” kid from Roswell to takeover. And now you know why no one cares about your dreams.

a side: "Soul Deep"
b side: "(The) Happy Song"

a side: "Show and Tell" 1974
b side: "The Snake" 1968
Collectables COL 3168
Two Al Wilson hits on one 45. "Show & Tell" reached #1 on the Hot 100 in 1974. "The Snake" cracked the Top 30 in 1968, then later again in the UK in 1975 to the Northern Soul scene. Check out Aesop's fable of "The Farmer and the Viper".
Blue Swede [31:14]
a side: "Silly Milly"
b side: "Lonely Sunday Afternoon"
EMI Records 3983 1973
I don't know if they're actually blue but they are actually Swedes. Perhaps you are more familiar with their rendition of BJ Thomas' "Hooked on a Feeling". This one cracked the Hot 100 reaching as high as number 71.

b side: "Till We Kissed"
Scepter Records S 1295 1965
Originally written and recorded by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates in 1960, brought to this side of the Atlantic by these Canucks. Fun fact: The Guess Who were a nom de consumerisme trying to cash in on The Beatles craze. They were in fact called Chad Allan & The Expressions, but Guess Who stuck.

Barbra Streisand [00:20]
"The Christmas Song"
Seasons Greetings from Barbra Streisand... and Friends
Columbia Special Products CSS 1075 1969
Babs takes things in a particularly saccharine direction, but I suppose not every version can be the Nat King Cole Trio.
Rockpile [04:25]
"Heart"
Seconds of Pleasure
Columbia JC 36886 1980
The iconic album from the band that until this point has backed solo efforts from Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds knock it out of the park on their only release as Rockpile. Guitarist Billy Bremnar steps up to take the lead vocals on this snappy number.
Pavement [07:00]
"Frontwards"
The Secret History, Volume 1 (1990-1992)
Matador OLE-1064-1 2015
A compilation from a few years ago of early Pavement material. This one is a live version of one of my favorite Pavement songs, performed at Brixton Academy in London on December 14, 1992. Years later Los Campesinos! would win my musical heart with their version of this song (https://youtu.be/DnEa4ES7ep4?si=WeB_oCdOz73gNL0E).

Luna [38:57]
"(Walkin' Thru' the) Sleepy City"
A Sentimental Education
Double Feature Records LP-DBL-0013 2017
A fine collection of covers from one of my favorite bands. Frank Sinatra [42:42]
"September Song"
September of My Years
Reprise Records FS 1014 1965
Frank handles this Weill number pretty well. For my money, the Lou Reed version (https://youtu.be/dHVqWRxpqXk?si=Jop71rSbI5jTlzXF) that appears on the Hal Willner project "September Song: The Music of Kurt Weill".

Seven Year Ache

Pigbag [08:35]
a side: "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag"

Honey Cone [00:23]
a side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part I)"
b side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part II)"
Hot Wax HS 7110 1971
Of course the show is going on when I've got more monkey tunes to spin. Fun fact: lead singer Edna Wright is the sister of Darlene Love. Reached #5 on the R&B charts and #15 on the Hot 100. Another fun fact: Hot Wax was started by the great Holland, Dozier and Holland when they left Motown in 1968.
Murray Head [07:20]
a side: "One Night in Bangkok"
b side: "Merano"
MCA Records PB-13988 1984
The sound of 80s musicals is alive and well in this production from ABBA's Bjorn and Benny teaming up with Tim Rice, featuring Murray Head doing to the spoken word bits. Oh right, it's a musical about Chess... called Chess. The great Frank Rich described the Broadway production thusly: "a suite of temper tantrums, [where] the characters ... yell at one another to rock music".
INXS [19:35]
a side: "The One Thing"
b side: "Phantim of the Opera"
ATCO Records 7-99905 1982
The lead single from their 1982 album Shabooh Shoobah, released in the US in 1983. The b-side is a tongue in cheek reference to yes, the Phantom of the Opera and INXS lead guitarist Tim Farriss.
The Damned [26:15]
a side: "One Way Love"
b side: "Don't Cry Wolf"
Stiff Records BUY 24 1977
A 1981 Re-release of their second single originally release in 1977, this time with the sides flipped around. Interestingly enough, this was produced by Nick Mason after the band originally tried to get the ever reclusive Syd Barrett to produce.

a side: "One with the Birds"
b side: "Southside of the World"
Palace Records PR20 1998

Brenton Wood [42:53]
a side: "The Oogum Boogum Song"
b side: "I Like the Way You Love Me"
Double Shot Records 111 1967
Hot stuff and cool stuff from Brenton Wood. This single reached #19 on the R&B charts and #34 on the Hot 100 in 1967. Seems like it should have gone much higher than that if you ask me.
The Marmalade [48:25]
a side: "Otherwise It's Been a Perfect Day"
b side: "I See the Rain"
Epic Records 5-10236 1967
Sorta Kinksian, sort Bacharachian a-side from these Glaswegians. But that flipside! Some excellent psyche pop.
Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart [55:07]
a side: "Out & About"
b side: "My Little Chickadee"
A&M Records 858
Or as they say in Canada, Oot and Aboot. Super singer/songwriters release a bit of their own magic that reached #39 on the Hot 100 in 1967. And the nostalgic b-side sort of sets us up for when we reach Sonny & Cher's 1967 single "Podunk" in a few episodes from now. Fun fact: Jeanie was their drummer, and Phil Spector approves. (https://youtu.be/R5GoGClBvOg)

a side: "No Matter What"
b side: "Carry On Till Tomorrow"
Apple Records 1822 1970

Elektra Records EK-45603 1966
A fine stripped down version of Burt Bacharach's tune. And supposedly influenced the Syd Barrett's riff in "Interstellar Overdrive". And that b-side is clearly Byrdsian.

Scott (Aloner)
Smash Records SRS 67099 1967
Alright, so I'm cheating a little on this one too. The US release of Walker's first album, Scott, was titled Aloner. But I didn't have this album when we were running through Albums that begin with the letter A as in Alpha. It's really difficult to pick just one song to play here. My instinct wanted to go with "The Lady Came from Baltimore (https://youtu.be/7gFECZErdBY?si=Pi-CIpL5RRu22aA7)" but the atmosphere of his cover of Brel's "Amsterdam" (https://youtu.be/-Z0UGGvb4sQ?si=2SIFvLXn7CvA80UT) is so good.
Siouxsie & the Banshees [43:21]
"Mirage"
The Scream
Polydor POLD 5009 1978
The amazing debut album from Siouxsie and the Banshees. A pretty remarkable effort front to back. The version of "Mirage" that appears on this album gains a little polish but still retains the energy of the Peel Session version the year before (https://youtu.be/0S_vlZg7xBQ?si=1NqDL9OM6OhrSn50).

EMI America B-8177 1983
Almost like a promo single, but this style is studio on the a-side and live on the b-side. Listening to the studio version, I never realized how kind a lame those synth stabs in the verse are. Anywho the live side was recorded on the Serious Moonlight tour on it's stop in Montreal.

b side: "I Go Ape"
Ramo Records RAMO 105 2014
WFMU's master of monkey mayhem Dave the Spazz (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/MS) brings us this smash hit with Neil Sedaka b-side. I do indeed go ape for this single.

Partisan Records PTSN1016-7 2015
Catchy grooves on the a-side from San Francisco's Burning Curtains and the b-side from Rhode Island's own Happiness.

a side: "Matchbook Seeks Maniac (Dedication Mix)"
b side: "Makko Shobu"
Kill Rock Stars KRS 491 2007
Fantastic picture disc single from their 2007 album Friend Opportunity, featuring artwork by David Shrigley. This was from the post-Chris Cohen pre-Ed Rodriguez era when they played as a trio.
Chuck Berry [19:43]
a side: "Maybellene"
b side: "Wee Wee Hours
Chess Records 1604 1955
The rock and roll classic. Evidently the flipside "Wee Wee Hours" was on the audition tape that Chuck Berry sent to Leonard Chess that got him his contract.
Mick Jagger [26:20]
a side: "Memo from Turner"
b side: "Natural Magic"
Decca Records F 13067 1970
Single from Mr. Jagger recorded for "Performance" featuring some hot hot slide guitar from Ry Cooder. It also features Gene Parsons (of all people) on drums and oh hey... Randy Newman on piano.
The Dynamics [32:11]
a side: "Misery"
b side: "I'm the Man"
Big Top Records 45-3161 1963
Super fine r&b number for Detroit's The Dynamics. This would re-interpreted by The Who (or High Numbers if you prefer) as "Zoot Suit".

a side: "Miss Modular"
b side: "Allures"
Duophonic Records D-UHF-D016s
A moog-y masterpiece from Stereolab's 1997 album Dots and Loops.

Kill Rock Stars KRS 333 1999
Pretty awesome release the Kill Rock Stars 7" singles club Mailorder Freaks.
Reverb Motherf***ers [05:30]
a side: "L.S.D. 25"
b side: "L.S.D. 25"
Vital Music 1991
NYC noise rockers I used to see perform quite a bit at various East Village venues. Oddly enough I found this single a few weeks ago at The Last Record Store, all the way out here in Santa Rosa, California.
Waylon Jennings [14:44]
a side: "Lukenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)"
b side: "Belle of the Ball"
RCA Records GB-11757 1977
Big hit for Waylon, and guest vox by Willie of course. Evidently Waylon was not really a fan of the song but saw the hit potential.
Madonna [21:25]
a side: "Lucky Star"
b side: "I Know It"
Sire Records 7-29177 1983
My second favorite Madonna single, and actually a pretty solid b-side. This was the 4th of the 5 singles that were released from her debut album, and her best performing on the US Hot 100 (although both Holiday and Lucky Star made it to the number 1 position on the US Dance chart).
Killdozer [30:20]
a side: "Lupus"
b side: "Nasty"
Touch and Go Records T&G#44 1989
An a-side disguised as a book report, and a b-side disguised as a Janet Jackson song.
Steppenwolf [37:46]
a side: "Magic Carpet Ride"
b side: "Sookie Sookie"
Dunhill ABC Records D-4161 1968
I'm just going to come out and say it... the single version of this song is better than the album version of this song.
Neko Case with The Sadies a side: "Make Your Bed" [44:37]
The Sadies b side: "Gunspeak/Little Sadie" [48:19]
Bloodshot Records BS 030 1998

b side: "Sophisticated Boom Boom"
Red Bird Records RB 10-048 1966
Hot hot b-side, which is also the name of an excellent show on WFMU (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/CF).
Mercy [05:36]
a side: "Love (Can Make You Happy)"
b side: "Fire Ball"
Sundi Records SR-6811 1969
Bang, another killer b-side. And a perfectly fine a-side, but not quite as thrilling.
Sheila E [12:18]
a side: "A Love Bizarre"
b side: "A Love Bizarre, Part II"
Paisley Park DXX 1137V1S 1985
So nice, you have to continue it on to the next side. And that's quite some guitar playing from His Purpleness.
John Holt a side: "A Love I Can Feel" [19:54]
Hugh Black b side: "Long Liver Man" [22:24]
Coxsone Records 1970
Two fine tracks that sound great together.

Ah, pure AOR gold.
Barbara Acklin [32:47]

Otis Redding [39:03]

b side: "Can't Turn You Loose"
ATCO Records 45-6677 1969
A fine posthumous single by Otis Redding, with a live rendition of his signature song on the b-side.
Little Sonny [44:54]

b side: "Monday"
ATCO Records 45-6440 1966
Big hit for them in Europe, not so much in the US.
Clarence Henry [06:42]
b side: "Little Suzy"
a side: "You Only Hurt the Ones You Love"
Argo U-10760 1961
Whoops. Your Old Pal Will got the sides flipped again. Probably because the b-side, "Little Suzy", is a pretty awesome track. The actual a-side is a pretty solid take on the standard made classic by The Mills Brothers.
The Sweet [12:16]
a side: "Little Willy"
b side: "Man from Mecca"
Bell Records 45,251 1972
One of the gold standard by which glam rock singles are judged. Still shimmers.
Future Twin [18:16]
a side: "Lockits"
b side: "Badseed"
2012
Heck yeah. Badass motorbike ladies. What more could you want from an a-side?
Talk Normal [25:07]
a side: "Lone General"
b side: "Hurricane"
M'Ladys Records M'LR 029 2011
Super rad release from Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro aka Talk Normal. The sleeve artwork is taken from a painting by Kim Gordon. Super powerful duo to see live.
The Shades of Blue [34:34]
a side: "Lonely Summer"
b side: "With This Ring"
Impact Records IMPACT 1014 1966
Some blue eyed soul from Detroit performing a pretty catchy Edwin Starr number. And heck, the b-side is not too bad either considering the saccharine topic.
Ricky Nelson [40:20]
a side: "Lonesome Town"
b side: "I Got a Feeling"
Imperial Records X5545 1958
The classic young Ricky Nelson single, accompanied by The Jordanaires.

Hoo yeah. The excellent duo Nadja bringing us their cover of a song from The Kids in the Hall film Brain Candy (https://youtu.be/sPFQE8VjAog). A fine aural confection.

Cock of the Walk COTW01 2012
Some local tunes, including a b-side that references a band that I know well.
Sebadoh [mm:ss]
a side: "Limelight"
b side: "Dialogue"
Joyful Noise Records JNR171 2015
Didn't we all hate high school? A little something for adolescents of all ages out there in listener land.
The Monkees [mm:ss]
a side: "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"
b side: "The Girl I Knew Somewhere"
Colgems 66-1004 1967
Yup. Super catchy Neil Diamond tune on the a-side, and an even catchier b-side written by Michael Nesmith. If you poke around enough you can find a version of "Girl I Knew Somewhere" with Michael singing instead of Mickey which I really really like. For those of you who are interested in that sort of thing, check out Michael Nesmith's recent autobiography "Infinite Tuesday" (https://amzn.to/2GFo0p8).
The Music Explosion [mm:ss]
a side: "Little Bit O'Soul"
b side: "I See the Light"
Laurie Records LR 3380 1967
Reached the #2 slot on the Hot 100 but was unable to dislodge The Association's "Windy" from #1. Mansfield Ohio's own.
Palace Music [mm:ss]
a side: "Little Blue Eyes"
b side: "The Spider's Dude Is Often There"
Drag City Records DC91 1996
A fine little single, perhaps my favorite of the Palace incarnations.
Syndicate of Sound [mm:ss]
a side: "Little Girl"
b side: "You"
Bell Records 640 1966
San Jose's own Syndicate of Sound bringing us a well played Nuggets classic (https://youtu.be/mtVq3wCCjxk), and a very groovy b-side. I'll be honest and say that I think the first time I heard this tune was via the Divinyls 1988 rendition with the noun change.
Pete Townshend [mm:ss]
a side: "A Little Is Enough (stereo)"
b side: "A Little Is Enough (mono)"
ATCO Records 7312 1980
Indeed, the New Wave-esque pop single from his 1980 album Empty Glass. Not only does this promo single have a stereo and a mono side, but the stereo side label is blue and the mono side is white.
Fleetwood Mac [mm:ss]
a side: "Little Lies"
b side: "Little Lies"
Warner Bros. Records 7-28291 1987
A fine little Christine McVie number from their 1987 Tango in the Night album. Indicative of the time, there is actually a Jelly Bean Benitez remix of this on the 12" release of this same single.
Music behind the DJ: "Baby Elephant Walk" by Les Brown and His Orchestra.

PJ Harvey [00:22]
a side: "The Letter"
b side: "Bows and Arrows"
Island Records IS 861 2004
The first single from her 2004 album "Uh Huh Her", and a fine selection at that. Simlar to her 4-track Demos release, she plays all albums except the final mix drums. And she was the engineer, mixer and producer. What's not to love?
The Castaways [07:29]
a side: "Liar, Liar"
b side: "Sam"
Soma Record Co. 1433 1965
Another classic Nugget. Falsetto raving from Minneapolis' own The Castaways. If you're curious, check out their appearance in "It's a Bikini World". I dig the b-side too!
Gene Pitney [12:48]
a side: "Liberty Vallance"
b side: "Take It Like a Man"
Musicor MU 1020 1962
Classic theme from a classic Western, though it doesn't appear in the film. If you're a fan of Westerns, I can highly recommend The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (with all of its modern flaws). Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The b-side is an interestingly titled number written by Lieber and Stoller.
Dick & Dee Dee [18:08]
a side: "Life's Just a Play"
b side: "All I Want"
Liberty Records 55478 1962
The a-side is a bit meh, but the b-side! A mighty fine tune from Dee Dee Sperling and the improbably named Dick St. John.
Joe Walsh [22:01]
a side: "Life's Been Good"
b side: "Theme from Boat Weirdos"
Asylum Records E-45493 1978
Ah yes, the rock and roll lifestyle. Reached all the way up to #12 on Billboard's Hot 100. Fun fact for you audio enthusiasts: Joe Walsh's publishing company is called Wow and Flutter.
Los Campesinos! [33:02]
a side: "Light Leaves, Dark Sees"
aa: side: "Four Seasons"

The Capsules [39:36]
a side: "Light the Path"
b side: "It Hangs Over Me"
Isota Records sody008 2003
A lovely transluscent orange vinyl release for Isota Records' singles club. Some fine swirling post-punk.
Nadja [48:51]
a side: "Like a Hand on Your Brain/I Don't Mind If Your Hands Are Cold/Corrupting Host to Appease the Parasite"
b side: "Freedom from Death Machines/Caught/The Smell of Bastards"
Broken Spine Records BSP007 2014
Entitled "Tangled", that is a collection of the shortest songs you are likely to ever hear from Nadja. And yes, still super amazing and sublime.
Music behind the DJ: "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'as performed by Les Brown and His Orchestra.

The Beat [mm:ss]
a side: "Let Me Into Your Life"

David Bowie [mm:ss]
a side: "Let's Dance"
b side: "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)"

Yes indeed, that is the illustrious Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar. And the b-side is a little number co-written with Giorgio Moroder for the 1982 Paul Schrader version of Cat People.
Les Cooper & the Soul Rockers [mm:ss]
a side: "Let's Do the Boston Monkey"
b side: "Owee Baby"

Raspberries [mm:ss]
a side: "Let's Pretend (Stereo)"
b side: "Let's Pretend (Mono)"
Capitol Records P-3546 1972
Some nascent power pop from Eric Carmen and company. This promo single features a contest for the Raspberries' Rollswagen. All you have to do is return the entry blank explaining which one of the Raspberries is the "foxiest" and why: Eric Carmen, Wally Bryson, Dave Smalley, or Jim Bonfanti. The lucky winner will be the happy owner of the Raspberries' Rollswagen (a VW bug with a Rolls Royce front end) with these "far-out" features:
-Special Raspberry-Pearl paint and green vinyl top, personally designed by George Barris for the Raspberries.
-Foxy fur upholstery! Created by California's leading auto interior designer Harold Mitchell.
-Formula Super Stock Tires on Ansen Sprint Wheels.
-Quadrasonic 8-Track Stereo System! Outasight sound with 4 speakers by Car Tapes, Inc of California.
-A complete Library of 100 Capitol 8-track cartridges! Includes Beatles! Helen Reddy! Rick Springfield, Leon Russel! Many more favorites.
Hoo boy.
Wilbert Harrison One Man Band [mm:ss]
a side: "Let's Work Together (Part 1)"
b side: "Let's Work Together (Part 2)"
Sue Records SUE 11 1969
As true today as it was then. You may be familiar with versions by Canned Heat, Bryan Ferry and as we heard a few episodes, Dwight Yoakam. Fine stuff. An improved variation on his original 1962 "Let's Stick Together".
Music behind the DJ: "Irena's Theme" by Giorgio Moroder.

"I Don't Want to Know"
Rumours
Warner Bros. Records BSK 3010 1977
Funny how the classic rock radio format ruined so much music for me through it's incessant repetition of what it deemed classic, and yet I still thoroughly enjoy Rumours. A fun little number originally from the Buckingham Nicks days.
Deerhoof [04:22]
"Twin Killers"
The Runners Four
Children of the Hoof #1 2006
Maybe it's my Gemini nature (certainly not my killer nature) that draws me to this song.
Arlo Guthrie [06:41]
"Coming in to Los Angeles"
Running Down the Road
Reprise Records RS 6346 1969
Some solid country rock on this sophomore album from Woody's son. Support musicians include Clarence White, Ry Cooder, Gene Parsons, James Burton, Chris Ethridge and Jim Gordon. Ah the joys of travelling while holding.

While my favorite Rutles song is "I Must Be in Love (https://youtu.be/54KBPA20b9Q)", "Cheese and Onions runs a close second, thank in no small part to the Galaxie 500 cover (https://youtu.be/pAzdSeAwKpg) of that song.
